About the Artists Yasemin Kackar Demirel Yasemin’s work is a fragmented and reconstructed journey through the places she has lived or imagined. Born in Istanbul, she received her MFA at DeKalb (IL), and now currently resides in New York. According to Yasemin this series, "Explores the rise and fall of places through physical and emotional conducts. I like to work with random juxtapositions of places in nature and the urban environment and re-present them inpuzzling and surprising contexts. Shifting between abstraction and representation, I explore and experiment with the push-pull effects between the concepts of longing vs. apathy, insecurity vs. comfort, order vs. chaos, unfamiliarity vs. belonging and stability vs. ephemerality. I am intrigued by the idea of fragmenting and connecting which reinvestigates a place by reconstructing or renovating while destroying it. Here, I am employing the possibilities of a new location, a new order devoid of any preconceived identity whereby I find myself in total conformity." Yasemin has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in the US and Turkey. Her work is also in the Ipek-Ahmet Merey Foundation in Istanbul, Turkey.
Alexis Duque Alexis Duque was born in Colombia 1971, he currently lives and works in New York. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Antioquia, Colombia. His works rely on just a few colors. Notwithstanding the use of acrylic paint, he makes the influence of illustration apparent, equally attending to all of the aspects of the painted surface without leaving anything to chance. The Colombian artist introduces architectural features that are characteristic of the Western Civilization, from ancient Greece and Rome: columns, capitals, and niches. They are symbols of the bygone ruling culture and the aesthetic model of the European colonizers, now an integral part of daily life of the populations of Latin America. His work has been exhibited in numerous venues including: at El Museo del Barrio, The Drawing Center and Praxis International Gallery in New York; The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) CA ; Champion Contemporary, Austin, TX; RudolfV Gallery, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Galleri Oxholm in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ferdinanda Florence Ferdinanda Florence was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Arlington, VA. She received a degree in art history and studio art at The American University, and has continued to pursue a successful professional life as a scholar, teacher, and practicing artist. She earned her Master’s degree in art history at the University of Maryland, College Park. A second-generation Armenian-America, Florence has explored in her research the role of place in artistic expression. Her Master’s thesis detailed the link between Armenian religious rituals and church architecture. In her artwork, she uses industrial sites in her home city of Vallejo to explore issues of place on a more personal level.
Florence’s exhibitions reflect her varied interests and concerns. Her work has appeared at the Di Rosa Preserve, Napa, the University of San Francisco Law School ; and as set decoration for a Bay Area Playwrights Festival performance at the Magic Theater, San Francisco (“As American As,” 2006). About the Artists Amy Genser Amy Genser creates dimensional paper collages. These colorful, textural, one-of-a-kind wall pieces embody movement and processes. The collages are built from layered, rolled, and cut paper that are adhered to painted surfaces. Amy explains her work by saying, “The sources of my work are textures, patterns, and grids. I look for forms that can be repeated to create a pattern when they are joined. My work tries to capture the essence of an experience or an image I have seen. I often look to the natural world for inspiration. I am fascinated by the flow of water, the organization of beehives, and the organic irregularity of plants, flowers, rock formations, barnacles, moss, and seaweed. Aerial views of our landscape can also be compelling; it is interesting how the organization of our landscape becomes quilt-like when viewed from above.” Her work has been exhibited at many venues throughout the northeast United States and has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest. She earned her MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Martha Hughes Martha Hughes lives and works in Marfa, Texas. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Texas, Austin. She has been exhibiting her artwork since 1987 throughout the US including a recent exhibit group show in Sante Fe featuring her work alongside, Chuck Close, Agnes Martin, and Sol LeWitt.
Jeffrey Palladini Jeffrey Palladini’s unconventional portraits evoke feelings of sensuality & euphoria. While the San Francisco-based artist studied at California State University, it was in Florence that his true creative spirit was pulled forth from the beauty around him. Now his modern figure paintings breathe life with vibrant colors and flowing brush strokes. Unlike many portrait paintings, Jeffrey minimizes the amount of detail and information allowing the viewer to gain intense suggestions of emotions in an in-stant. The simplicity is reminiscent of Alex Katz. Palladini has exhibited his work around the world for over twenty years. His work is in numerous private & corporate collections. Most recently, Palladini was honored with an SFMOMA SECA Award nomination, and in 2013 was named one of San Francisco's Top 20 Artists by Asterisk Magazine.

About the Artists Peter and Madeline Powell For this husband and wife team, each painting starts with setting up and taking multiple reference photos of the subject matter. They mostly choose to concentrate on close-up, “larger than life” images of everyday things with a bit of a nostalgic feel. Once they have taken over 72+ photos, they select the one image. The canvas is stretched and Peter and Madeline are both involved in the painstaking layout of each painting, which is completely laid out in graphite on the canvas in detail, showing the shadows and highlights, as well as the folds, crinkles, lettering and reflections. The layout process can take several days, if not weeks to complete. Then, the actual painting process begins with the smooth layering of the base colors, which in some cases is done with an airbrush. This allows for a very “flat” surface foundation without brush strokes. Each color is masked off separately and then the lettering is usually painted in with fine sable brushes. In some cases, an old style architectural ruling pen is used which allows them to fill the pen well with paint. With the base colors and lettering complete, the shadows and reflections are painted in, followed lastly with the highlights. The Powells have exhibited their paintings throughout the US since 1980. They are in public and private collections including A&M Records, BMW North America, OPI (Beverly Hills), Cosbar (Aspen) and the Slinky Corporation.
Matt Story Matt Story studied art from an early age and demonstrated a unique skill for rendering verisimilitude, or hyper-realism. "I was lauded for 'photo-realistic' technique, but I was never after that, really, after what a camera impartially sees, because there's so much more there, captured only by the human filter of memory. We all possess these invisible imprints, through experience and living, but often its only artists who can play it back for us, to remind us. The paint surface needs to be a mirror for the viewer, reflecting back not his or her superficial self, but a deep shared humanness. This is the essence of looking at a piece that's totally unfamiliar to you and yet, being awed with a sense of recognition. " Story has worked for over twenty years from his studio in Los Angeles but in mid-2013 began traveling with his wife, first with a long hiatus on the Isle of Palms near Charleston, South Carolina, and recently a long stint near Santa Fe, New Mexico and New Orleans. His method of oil painting on canvas and panel closely resembles the classical method, used for centuries by masters such as Titian and Caravaggio, two of Story's heroes, fastidiously building up thin glazes, painting "fat over lean" with traditional materials. His work is included in private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.
