Historica Historica Racer/Classic Driver Whilst we have been involved in Historic Motorsport since 2000, we branched out into providing racing and driver accessories in 2010 under the Historica brand.

Our purpose is to provide our customers with equipment and accessories that correspond with the age and period of their vehicles. We heavily invest in the reproduction of certain items that are no longer available and we strive to provide anything that the historic racer or classic driver might need. The 60s is often referred to as the golden era of Grand Prix racing and indeed F1 was the most rich, famous and glamorous event on the planet.

These were the years of the post-war economic boom, the sexual revolution, the lack of racing security measures and all in all the years of the will to have fun.

It was the most dangerous time in F1 but a time that saw a generation of epic drivers, romantic heroes who truly raced on the edge, risking their life on every track. F1 was the old-school play-boys’ sport, an adrenaline f illed life, built on speed, innovation, technology, beauty and luxury.

At this time the race mechanics used to travel with the drivers in old converted coaches and unlike today, where teams employ upwards of 1500 people. Big teams like Ferrari employed a single team manager and two or three mechanics per car who were also responsible for building and repairing cars back at the factory.

F1 cars were small, quick, loud, and utterly dangerous.

The drivers of the 60s sat between two large fuel tanks with a fuel tank over their knees and hot oil pipes running alongside their legs.

Unlike today where formula one drivers are fully protected by a Nomex f ire resistant race suit , underwear and carbon f ibre helmet. The 60s drivers wore a simple two piece cotton race suit, an open face helmet and quite often casual driving shoes that could have be bought f rom a high street shop.

Much of the glamour, which is still associated with F1 in the 60s, comes f rom appreciating the beauty and the brevity of a life lived on the limit; where drivers shared a one in f ive chance of dying during the race.

This was however the time where arguably the most beautiful formula one cars were ever produced.

Created by true artisans, these masterpieces were the symbol of futuristic technology of the time, designed just for performance and beauty and completely in disregard of any safety parameters.

As the 60s progressed the happy go lucky feel to formula one started to be lost. The appearance of the f irst commercial sponsors arrived on the scenes in the late 60s, there so began the drive to Formula one as we know it today.
