Belly dancing over-50s prove age is nothing but a number By Elise Christian A group of older ladies are singing the praises of a weekly belly dance class that encourages them to keep fit and get social. Belly dancer Vanessa Culliford, 50, of Foads Lane, Cliffsend teaches the over 50’s group on the ground floor of The Delphi Greek Restaurant, Ramsgate. She said: “Anyone can do it, regardless of age, ability, body type or gender. It keeps you fit and flexible, it isn’t high impact, you meet some amazing friends through it, and get to do some fabulous things.” The class has proved popular and Ms Culliford typically teaches around 22 women each week. Belly dancer Sandra McCreddie, 75, of Beach Avenue, Birchington, said: “The atmosphere is always friendly and stimulating. Vanessa is the best.” Ms Culliford has seen regular attendees becoming fitter and more confident since the class began last year. Linda Hughes, 68 of Avenue Road, Ramsgate, wears a FitBit and revealed she takes approximately 3000 steps in an average class. Ms Hughes said: “I love the classes and look forward to meeting the girls each week. We have a laugh, get some exercise and socialize, which is very important as you get older. It’s so easy to give up and sit alone at home watching telly. The ladies want to encourage more over-50s to take up belly dancing and reap the benefits. Sandra Dixon, 66 of Melville Avenue, Cliffsend said: “It helps to keep us fit and we laugh a lot.” Jo Eaton, 67, of Bradstow Way, Broadstairs, added: “We have ladies over 70 in our class so I don’t think you can be too old to belly dance – I may have to give it up when I reach 80 though! Might want to try sky diving!” The classes take place on Wednesday’s from 6-7pm on a drop-in basis.
