TEAT DEL TURó: BARCELONA THEATRE PROJECT Teat del Turó: Tasked with designing the “perfect theater” on a sloped site with an existing 19th century modernism building in the Vallcarca neighborhood of Barcelona, Teat del Turó leads users through a sequence of playful spaces delineated through the intricate interplay of both new and pre-existing planer elements.
THE WORMHOLE: URBAN LIBRARY The Wormhole: Asked to think critically about the concept of what a library is in the 21st century urban setting of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, we were instructed to ask ourselves one question we didn’t know the answer to. My question: “If the future of technology scares you, where do you find comfort from it?” I found comfort in learning about the past.
BURIED PLATE: UIUC Campus Honors House UIUC Campus Honors House: A building of 10,000 sq. ft., buried plate was designed with the intention of fostering a stimulating learning environment while fulfilling its civic duties as a public building near the heart of the University of Illinois’ campus.
SOPHOMORE STUDIO: Steel Structures Project Sophomore Studio, Steel Structures Project: Grouped with three other thirdyear students, we were asked to design a free standing structural building with the intention of relocating the University’s sophomore architecture studio next to the school of architecture’s main building.
HAROLD E. EISENBERG FOUNDATION CHALLENGE WINNING PROJECT: STATION AT 63RD Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation Project: Competing against 9 other Midwestern schools, teams were tasked with redeveloping a 7.4 acre of city of Chicago owned land on the 63rd block of Englewood. UIUC’s winning presentation incorporated diverse retail options, an abundance of community space and various mixed-income residential units.
INITIAL ARCHITECUTRAL CONCEPTUALIZATION
ARBORETUM HACIENDA: Event space at the UIUC Arboretum Meant to subtly yet retroactively compliment the pre-existing harmonistic elements of the University of Illinois’ Arboretum, the Hacienda on the Hill stands as a bold yet impartial event space on the Arboretum’s east end. Visitors of the Hacienda can become fully engaged with the open floor plan style and courtyard that is customary of this type of architecture and in turn allows them to become active members of the arboretum’s ecology.
BUTTERFLY BRIDGE: Intervention along Boneyard Creek Intervention along the Boneyard Creek: An intervention along Champaign-Urbana’s prominent Boneyard Creek, Butterfly Bridge replaces a pre-existing concrete bridge in the cornerstone area of Skelton Park and is designed with the intention of sparking community-wide intervention within the area that serves as a node between Champaign’s downtown, midtown and campustown.
