Abstract An inclusive and unbiased society is the way of a happy future. Differently abled are also a part of our world yet society in our country have excluded them. Little to zero access to their rights, facilities, jobs and happiness their future looks grim. Living an independent and normal life for them seems a taboo. Conversation is limited to sympathy rather than their abilities and how to harness them. Awareness and sensitivity being the lowest among people providing help itself. In depth research on their need and improvement in their lifestyles is important. Increasing sensitivity, initiating conversation to increase awareness and research becomes the need of the hour. BROKEN REFLECTIONS

2017 ACADEMIC PROJECT

Revitalization of Chandigarh sub city center, sector 34

NO RT H

As a part of urban design studio, the brief was to make a detailed study of the sub city centre, sector 34, Chandigarh. The detailed study included identification of problems, pedestrian study, facilities. The initial survey was done in teams with each team assigned a different quadrant of the sector. Once all the observations were compiled, it was upon the individual to provide various solutions in the quadrant they were assigned. The final solution was expected to revitalize the sub city centre and find solutions to the problems concluded from the observation phase. The scale of the intervention was left to the individual.

Broken reflections, was the idea to reflect the strong facade into shadows below to form informal pockets that could form attractive corners for poeple to engage in the contrast to the brutal concrete facades. It came out from the need to introduce informal areas and multiple uses and increase function from just office use to recreational uses, absord informal sector like hawkers and hole in the wall buisness. *Left, a study of understanding informal pathways, roads and circulation formed at site using google earth and concepts of nolli’s plan. THE EXISITING AND THE MISSING

The intervention is introduced in three parts, first was regulation and limiting parking in a formal way. For this a dedicated underground parking and a limited surface parking was introduced with proper access and organization. The vehicular entry is restricted to the underground parking and some surfaces parking near the banks. Even the parking has open cut-outs to the sky to accommodate greens and not to become an isolated zone. Once through the pedestrian entry one takes gradual ramps to enter the informal areas with seating, and green breakouts to the second intervention utilizing dead the spaces between the buildings by introducing areas to accommodate hawkers, and small hole in the wall shops. While overhead brides form covered areas for below and also connect the buildings at the ground level, they are located right across the various cores in the buildings. Thus, separating the office traffic to the informal footfall, thus not disrupting the day-to-day functionality of the area. the

INTERVENTIONS AND VIEWS During the afternoon the people from the office areas can also join the informal zone. This increases the functionality of the area and hence the footfall. The informal zone can also remain active throughout the evening past. The directional flow of the zones takes you the end open area which could function as a plaza and facilitate the areas further. Making it very accessible and also bicycle friendly among other uses. Zones were defined for small activities and art displays while a special booth system was also designed to take over the open area and provide a ‘mela” or a souk type festive feeling.

MULTI-PURPOSE HALL, SCINDIA BOYS SCHOOL, GWALIOR

Key Plan

2020

PROFESSIONAL PROJECT

WITH : Enso Design

Scindia boys boarding school is located on top of the hill within the premise of Gwalior fort, a historical campus with buildings which were used as barracks by the royal family and British, the client wanted a modern facility with swimming pool and gym which would define the school’s path to be the best facility in the Asian region. The client brief was a requirement of modern high standard sports multipurpose hall with a competition level swimming pool and dedicated squash courts. Additionally it is supposed a symbol of the quality and modernity the school aims for the future with overpowering the heritage

and history of the school. The site located on a lower level than the central assess road was choosen as not to disrupt the existing historical facades. The building exteriors uses the sandstone in similar shades as earlier buildings, which was quarried on site earlier. The building is an image reflection of what the school wishes to achieve in the future while not disrupting the long history of the school, the building and the organization. To be constructed with locally quarried sandstone and made light with fiber glass panels which illuminate in the night time and would be visible from the city below.

The volume of the building was a challenge as it could overshadow the old heritage buildings. So utilizing the natural dip in the cliff to seem like a single level in the front by accommodate more levels below it at the other opposite end. 2021 PROFESSIONAL PROJECT

WITH : Enso Design

The large site is along the Himalayas faces a valley and views of the Almora ranges. The proposal for the retreat was to have limited accommodation and mimic the vernacular architecture of the area. The buildings would be built with locally mined stone and pine timber felled on the site for flooring and furniture pieces. The various water bodies would act as natural collection areas for the seasonal streams that flow through the edges of the sites. The remaining area is dedicated to organic farming which would be used in the kitchen and complete the cycle by forming organic waste again to facilitate farming. Waste water would be recycled and sewage would be treated on site for other uses.

The major challenge for this proposal was the steep site, the solution as to make the main block as an extension of the slope making it seem a part of the mountain from the valley below. For accessibility reasons a golf cart road was added which circles the site and provide gradual walking slope for people who wish not to take the stairs that cuts the bult right at the centre till the lower end of the site connecting all structures at various levels. The villas mimic the local kotti banal architecture with lower levels facing open courts on one side a retaining wall on the other. The overall theme of the place is to mimic a local settlement but with a luxury touch for the visitors.

Following the topography of the site, landscape is dividedintothreezones. The top dense vegetation of trees is kept intact, and further treesare added. The middle site is covered with flowering tress, shrubs and plants. The walk to the various destinations is thus facilitated with manicured gardensof various colors for A transformative journey. The lower level is dedicated mainly to farming which would include small trails, might any guest want to take he meandering route and deviate from the centralpath. Time was taken to identify local trees and reintroduce them inot the ecosystem on site as listed below.

SARASWAT HOUSE, AGRA, UTAR PRADESH

Located on the ancestral property of the client, the house reflects on simplicity and true character of the materials. The walls are made of exposed brick with cavity in the middle for insulation. Extreme attention was placed in the details for the brick façade so as to seam without breaks and a continuous form. Other details include the stone cladding for the façade with special metal clamps designed for horizontal and vertical cladding, inbuilt planters for the balconies, and cantilevered volume in the front. The interior also reflects the same with a continuous terrazzo floor and a skylight accompanied

The Student Centre juxtaposed adjacent to the Library is the hub of student recreation activities and houses the Student Welfare Offices and the Student Common Room. It has an exposed concrete exterior and a rooftop Cafeteria accessed through a ramp that strings together all the levels of the four storeyed structure. The ramp is a unique feature seen in Pierre Jeanneret’s designs wrapping itself to the building. it serves as a viewing platform for the surroundings.

The library uses a staggered vertical section that intermixes varied heights of stacks and reading areas. The reading areas are located towards the North facade with large square glazing, thereby providing a well-lit, glare-free interior and an expansive view of the greens outside. The key-features of the interior are the sky-lit, suspended bridge across the multi-level stacks area and the visually interlinked subsidiary spaces. Since its inception over 60 years, the footfall in the library has increased exponentially. The library has a seating capacity of 500 readers. The demands of users include more reading space, besides facilities for a comfortable working environment. Recently, many new services have been introduced whereby a pressure on existing infrastructure and space is perceived.

The A C Joshi Library, located centrally between the University Arts and Science College, is one of the four focal structures of the campus. The two side north and south facades are identical with deep recesses provide indirect lighting to research cubicles. The exterior is finished in red sandstone with raw concrete balustrades stretched across each floor of the rear façade. The concrete brise-soleil cantilevered beyond the front facade is used, at places, as a balcony attached to the reading rooms. The sprawling lawns serve as extensions to scholars for discussion and debate. A C JOSHI LIBRARY - PANJAB UNIVERSITY Conservation of Cement Concrete and Modern Period Buildings in India

EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLICATION I had the opportunity to publish my bachelor thesis in a publication by universal design centre at the Dr. Bhanuben nanavati College of architecture (BNCA), Pune. The book, Design as an Equalizer, contains various studio projects by students on the same theme and is edited by Prof. Kavita Murugkar, who is an expert on this field and also an auditor under the accessible India Campaign. The book illustrates how a Universal Design approach can enhance the functionality and usability of a space without compromising the aesthetic. Conservation of cement concrete and modern heritage was organized by Ghetty foundation along with Punjab University for conservation of Gandhi bhavan. As the team we understood the conservation process and proposed future buildings for the university to protect and conserve, the library and student center buildings. The panels consisted of compressive visual study of the present condition of the buildings and observing and listing of need and causes for preservation. A total of six panels were contributed, display at the Gandhi bhavan. The Pierre Jeanerette Symposium was organized by Chandigarh college of Architecture to emphasize and honor his contribution to the building of Chandigarh. The part of the symposium included an exhibition on him. As a participant, collected material and study on the architect along with composition of panel, which is in display at the college foyer.
