LIZZY GREGORY FORM + COMMUNICATION FALL 2012

RISD Pictograms For this assignment, we were asked to create a set of pictograms to describe five different RISD facilities: the auditorium, health services, library, museum, and refectory. These pictograms had to be easily understood by those unfamiliar with RISD, thus, I avoided using any images that were exclusive to our campus. I chose rounded corners and reverse contrast in order to make the symbols unique and eye-catching.

The initial rendering of a typical ancient Greek vase (above) was the very first time I had ever used Illustrator. I decided to ditch the perspective and add the reverse contrast element to make the icons more distinctive.

Since I was dissatisfied with my vase pictogram, I decided to revisit my initial sketches. I had drawn a miniature abstract expressionist painting inspired by one of my favorite artists, Wassily Kandinsky. I then turned this into a pictogram, which is much more dynamic than the first version. I simplified the smaller version to adapt it to its smaller scale.

For the library pictogram, I avoided depicting aspects that are distinctive of RISD’s Fleet Library, such as the trademark hanging clock - I decided that a simple shelf of books would be most transparent.

Dining

I chose to render a simple microphone for the auditorium pictogram, since an image of a simplified stage and seats was difficult to recognize on a very small scale. Auditorium

I chose to draw an extremely minimal medicine box; original versions included a few pill bottles, but these were nearly impossible to see in the smaller version.

Health Services

Information designers We were assigned to design a short slide presentation about an information designer of our choosing. I selected illustrator/designer Jude Buffum. I was initially drawn to his piece

Time I have always believed that our notion of time is a completely human construct; we only know time as something that is calculable. For this assignment, I was inspired by Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time and created a small book titled A Brief History of Time (keeping). I documented different ways in which humans have recorded time throughout history. I created the drawings on Adobe Illustrator, and the layout of the book on Adobe Indesign. The book is folded in the concertina style, hand sewn, with stacked pages.

Using mind maps allows me to completely flesh out all of my thoughts concerning a very broad topic, such as time. I can then connect different ideas into one cohesive concept.

DSLR camera remote For this assignment, we were asked to completely redesign an app generated by Onone software. The app, compatible with iPhone and iPad, allows the user to remotely fire the trigger of a Canon or Nikon digital SLR camera.
