Mass, Void, Frame, and Excavation

Spring 2011

The objective of this studio was to conceptualize space and form through iteration and the understanding of direct and indirect light. The end result was to be a series of connected spaces to display specific artworks. Project Statement: Mass shifts and rotates around a central mass to form vertical ridges while exposing a continuous beam of light that passes through interlocking apertures. The shifting defines the boundaries of space forming columns of void while interlocking apertures form framed space. A dialogue is created by the reciprocity and proportion.

East St. Louis City Design (Macro/City Study)

Fall 2011

The goal of this studio was to reconsider the urban fabric of a city.

We established the city

of Chicago as a precedent, and applied what we learned from it to the fabric of East St. Louis.

02

We worked to redesign the city fabric to facilitate better spaces and revitalize the area.

East St. Louis City Design (Micro/Unit-Dwelling Study)

Spring 2012

This was an extension of the East St. Louis macro city design project. The objective was to choose a building within the redesigned fabric, and design a mixed use building. The location I chose was on the edge of the low rise and high rise structures. It was also at a very significant intersection between four different sections of the city. The geometry of the building was based on a strict system that correlated directly to human proportions and function.

The Artist’s Retreat in the Desert Fall 2012

This studio was designed around a motel in Marfa, Texas. Marfa is the home of Donald Judd’s Chinati foundation and other artist’s studios and retreats. The essential idea was to create a destination in the desert where an old motel once stood. Long since closed, the motel and surrounding area have been deserted ever since. My specific project references local artists like Donald Judd and takes its geometry from the remains of crop circles found on the site.

CRAFT: Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technology

Spring 2013

The objective of this studio was to design a shed that could house a craft that would better the community and place in which it is placed. People are injured and killed doing construction, natural disasters affect our structures, and wastelands multiply by the day: these are just three of the many problems that plague our culture and affect our architecture. The solution can be found in a new technology emerging in the design market, 3d printing and contour crafting. It solves environmental problems, safety problems, and improves the strength, safety, and stability of building. By engaging the public through both instruction and hands on experience in one space, the community could learn the possibilities this craft has to offer.

The Caserma

Fall 2013

This studio dealt with a site in Rome, Italy that is owned by the government. It currently consists of condemned military barracks and other military buildings. The idea is that this could become a functional and cultural center for the surrounding area rather than the walled off barricaded site that it is right now.

06

Project Statement: The Caserma functions as a threshold and center for the surrounding context. It connects numerous neighborhoods by creating an entrance and axis for use by the community. Vertical circulation is used to connect the Caserma to its surroundings. Buildings are separated, touching, and overlapping the main axis circulation based on function and need for public or private space. There are a series of courtyards and light wells that allow light in and vegetation to grow.
