One Christmas, many years ago, Fay wanted a specif ic thing. It was the only thing on her mind. The item of her obsession, was a Smokey Topaz Ring. I looked and looked, in every Jewelry Store I could think of... I tried to find that ring. No one had a ring like that anywhere. I bought Fay some really expensive gifts that year, because Christ mas was so close and I still could not find that ring. One day, by chance I went into BELK’S department store, and in the jewelry case was a display of rings. There it was... the Smokey Topaz Ring, A Big Stone, mount ed so beautifully. The only problem was, that the dis play, was costume jewelry.

The rings were 2 for $5.00. I bought two of them. One was the Smokey Topaz and the other was mounted just the same, but the stone was in a Lavender color.
I gave Fay all of her other gifts and then finally, The Smokey Topaz Ring. I had intended to tell her right then, that it was costume jewelry, but her Happiness and reaction was so intense and overwhelming that I just could not ruin that mo ment of Joy. She showed that Ring to everybody and was
I finally told Fay, that I had tried my best to find a Real Smokey Topaz Ring, but just couldn’t and that the one she was wearing was a Fake, on sale, 2 for $5.00. She didn’t say a word, but took the ring off and placed it very angri ly and firmly in my hand. I believe, to the best of my recollection that when arriv ing home, the entire evening was spent in silence. Fay, was always good at the Silent Treatment, and could carry it on, for far longer than I could stand. I apologized and told her I would find her a Real Gold and Smokey Topaz Ring if it took the rest of my life...and that I was on a Mission and Quest, to do just that. I told her that I would not accept defeat and
I seriously meant it. Just by Pure Luck and chance, I did find one, a Real One, in J C Penny’s Jewelry Depart ment, after Christmas... I bought it, didn’t care or even ask the Price... I just knew I had to have it. I gave it to Fay, She was very Happy, but she did ask “Are you sure this is the Real Thing?” I said yes, Fay, it is the real thing. Right then, all was Forgiven. She gave me a Big old Hug and Sincere Smackin’ Kiss. The Crisis was over, howev er... This was a real “Learn ing Moment for Me”. Never, Never, Never, try to pass off Costume Jewelry for the Real Thing... I bought Expensive Costume Jewelry for Fay af ter that, but Up Front, I said, this is costume jewelry but I thought you would like it. This story may be funny, but I swear, Every Word is True.
