y wife, Fay, was really not a drinker. If she was with someone that was having a beer, she would too. Sometimes, Wanda Carroll (her cousin) would bring over a bottle of Peach Schnapps and they would have a drink or two. On New Year’s Eve, we would always toast with a bottle of Asti-Spumonti Italian Champagne (a sweet, bubbly sparkling wine). Sounds more exotic and exclusive than it really was! Usually, in November I would buy two bottles and put them in the refrigerator in anticipation of New Year’s Eve. They were $5.99 at Food Depot, and had a twist off cap. Cheap but thoughtful. If we went out to eat, Fay might have two Miller Lites before dinner. If Crystal (her granddaughter) was here, Fay would drink Heiniken beer with her because that’s the only beer Crystal liked. Really, Fay did not drink much at all, except on rare occasions like the ones
Diane Stamey I have just mentioned. Nonetheless, we did always have loads of fun. A new memory just popped into my head…. Short story…We went out to a new steakhouse that had just opened in Chapel Hill Mall. The waitress came over and asked if we would like a cocktail before dinner. I said “yes, bring me a big, cold Budweiser draft”….I turned and asked Fay what she would like. They had a line of beer bottles set up on display at the bar. Fay said “Bring me a bottle of that Gilligan’s beer”. The waitress said “What?” Fay repeated herself, “A Gilligan’s beer… you know, that German beer in the green b o t t l e … y o u’v e got one over there set up on the bar.” The waitress asked “Do you mean a Heiniken beer?” Fay responds “Yes, isn’t that what I said?”

By this time, I am laughing so hard I can’t stop. Fay said “Steve, shut up. I mean it. Shut up!” I tried to stop. I finally pinched myself on the leg so hard it hurt to make myself stop laughing. I knew that if I didn’t, Fay would think I was really making fun of her. My silent thoughts in my head were ‘Steve, shut up. You have got to shut up NOW.’ We finally made it through the meal and got back home. I never mentioned the beer incident again. However, when I was not in Fay’s company and I was totally alone, I would recall that memory and die laughing all over again. I can still hear her, so seriously, asking for a ‘Gilligan’s beer’. The Captain, MaryAnn, Ginger, The Skipper and the Howell’s may have understood what Fay was ordering, but our little waitress didn’t have a clue!
