Fay’s First Colon Scan Consultation

Fay and I both booked our Doctor’s visits together every month with Doctor Phillip McGhee.

He was our first family Doctor when we moved to Carrollton. Dr. McGhee’s first concern and devotion was to the care of his pa tients and their welfare. The money and ability to pay, although important, came last on his list. On this visit, he told Fay, at her age (60 at the time) she needed to have a Colon Scan. She asked, what all is involved in this Scan? He said, I’m going to send in my head nurse, Miss Pat and she will ex plain the process, then schedule you an appoint ment at Tanner to have the procedure done. The year was 1998, when Pola-

roid Instant Cameras first came out and were the most popular cameras of the time. Miss Pat came in and began to explain that a small camera would be inserted into her colon and the Camera would instantly show any blockages, abnormal growths or polyps in her colon. Fay, think ing of the new Pola roid Cameras asked Miss Pat… Just how big is this camera they will be using? Miss Pat an swered, Fay I have had this procedure done. It does not hurt and the Camera they use is about as big as Dr. McGhee’s little finger. Fay thought for a minute, and then asked, Just how BIG is Dr. McGhee’s lit tle finger? Miss Pat and I were rolling with laughter by this time. Miss Pat says, Fay, you just won’t do, as she exited the room and made the appointment. I went with Fay to Tanner Hospital (because she re

ally was scared). I waited while the procedure was done and then took her home.

Luckily, Fay and I had a good friend (Loret ta Griffin, Chiropractor on Bankhead Hwy.) that sat with me and kept me company until the pro cedure was completed. It’s good, to have good friends available to share the good and bad times with. The Scan was clean and showed nothing ab normal. All in All, it was a Good Day, with a Good Result and Everything turned out Just Fine.

The Year was 1988. Fay and I were in Panama City Beach, Flori da for a much needed vaca tion. We were on the beach, when approached by 2 men offering Para-Sail Rides. I wanted the experience, so I asked Fay if she would do it with me. Fay was reluctant, but promised if I went first, then she would. When I landed without incident, Fay said O. K . I’ll go. They hooked her to the parachute and up she went. There was also a professional photographer on the beach, ready to take pictures. I wanted to pre serve Fay’s moment in the sky so I paid to have pictures taken. When she landed safely, I asked her, how did it feel to be that high up in the sky? She said, “Steve, I loved it, but while I was up there, I saw 2 birds flying around and wondered, What will happen if one them flies over and starts pecking on my parachute, then I thought, Fay just enjoy it,

On that same trip, Fay wore a beau tiful new strap less bathing suit that she had just purchased. While on the Highway, going to Pana ma City Beach, I saw a sign for a water-slide, something nei ther one of us had ever tried. I asked Fay if she would try it with me? She agreed. We climbed a mountain of stairs to get to the top of the slide, then I went down, feet first. I was at the bottom, waiting for Fay. She came down head first. When she hit the water, that bathing suit flopped down, and exposed 2 Big White Puppy Dogs, floating on top of the water. The pool was full of kids and they were all pointing and look

ing , saying Look Mommie, Look. Everyone in the pool including me, was rolling with laugh ter. I said, come on Fay, I want to do it again. She said, “You go ahead and knock yourself out, I’m not climbing all those stairs again.” So I did, while Fay rested and sunned herself, in a big lounge chair in front of the pool. She put on her Sunglasses, A Big Smile, laid back in that lounge chair and pre tended that no one at the pool would recog nize her as: “The Woman, Who came Down the Slide and Lost Her Bathing Suit.”
