Dear DWF members, Welcome to New Orleans

Are you ready to find your cheese?

*Andrena Photography

We hope that you find it right here in New Orleans this week. As we begin a sparkling new year, it’s time to energize your business and burnish your shooting skills. It’s time to get ready for a year that promises to be interesting, challenging, and hopefully rewarding. I was privileged to be the client this past year. For all I know about the business side of the camera, I’d never been the subject at a wedding shoot. Heather and I were blessed to have Andrena photograph our wedding with amazing artistry. It was an eye-opening experience as we felt all of the emotions your clients feel, from “when do we get the proofs, dammit?” to “OMG, these are breathtaking.” I gained new appreciation for the work photographers do, week-in and week-out. If you haven’t tried marriage... if you haven’t been the client... I’d recommend it. :) You’d appreciate the hard work you do from a completely different perspective. With my newfound appreciation for what you do, I welcome you to DWF Convention 2012! Warmly,

Jeff Caplan

Sun Jan 15, 2012 Keynote Address

Keynote Speaker

Cliff Mautner Call him a rockstar and he’ll snort. Cliff Mautner continues to shoot 50 high-end weddings per year. And, without dropping his prices in a tough economy. In his keynote address, one of the most acclaimed shooters in wedding photography will dive in and shoot straight about success. Cliff blogs. He facebooks. He tweets. And, he’ll tell you his success is not about the blog, facebooking, or the tweets. Cliff will ruffle your feathers. He’ll open your eyes. He’ll make you laugh. He’ll make you think. Cliff will readily admit that he’s screwed up at times. But, he’ll tell you what he’s learned from those mistakes, and how you can avoid them. He’ll share what’s worked for him, and what’s not worked for him. He’ll even tell you that it’s actually possible to be too passionate, care too much, and be too honest. He’ll speak openly about success in a keynote address that will be different from any seminar Cliff has ever offered, anywhere, in his straight- no chaser style. It’ll be less about lessons of light, and more about lessons of a lifetime in an industry that has evolved, and that he’s evolved with. Cliff Mautner is a DWF member since 2004. Website: www.cmphotography.com Bio: Cliff Mautner’s career in photography spans 29 years. After 15 years and 6000 assignments as a photojournalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, and working for an eclectic array of commercial clientele ranging from Comcast to Subaru, Cliff launched his wedding photography career. After 750 weddings, he hasn’t looked back. Cliff was named one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world by American PHOTO magazine, won the 2009 WPPI Grand Award for photojournalism, and was named a global wedding photography spokesperson for Nikon and Nikkor. Cliff is the founder of a highly successful Lighting and Skillset Bootcamp, and is best known for his ability to create quality images in some of the most difficult lighting conditions imaginable.

My Mistakes with Posing and Composition

Focus on Fabulous Boudoir

David Beckstead

Bambi Cantrell

It’s a full seminar born from a thread on the DWF, where David shared the mistakes he’s made. David’s been making mistakes as a photographer for 15 years, and still makes them all the time. And they’ve helped him grow as an artist. It’s not every day that a photographer named to the inaugural list of Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the world will tear his own work to shreds! David will share beautiful artistry and composition, that will leave you impressed. And then he’ll search for what’s wrong with these images, as he studies, and studies more, to improve his work. This selfless and open display from an expert will help you critically assess your own work, as David explores posing rules and compositional concepts. 3 Takeaways: 1. You’ll learn posing rules and when to break ‘em. 2. When the technical mistakes don’t matter! 3. How to critically (and lovingly) deconstruct and critique your own work Website: www.facebook.com/David.A.Beckstead Bio: Named as one of the Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the World by American Photo Magazine in 2t007, David Beckstead is a destination wedding photographer who books exotic weddings from his middle of nowhere home in the state of Washington. He’s blown-away DWF members with his weddings shot in Brazil, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, Vietnam, Slovenia, Norway, and more. David’s both an artistic soul, and a mountain man. He paints watercolors, and has hiked backcountry all over the world. He is an expert at image composition, and he spent 12 years as a hotshot firefighter for the US Forest Service, dousing flames with a Nikon SLR around his neck. See David’s latest powerful compositions on Facebook.

Join internationally recognized photographer Bambi Cantrell for an action packed program on the glamorous boudoir style of photography. Ms Cantrell will demonstrate through slides, and live demonstrations, many techniques on lighting, posing and composition to create captivating images of your subjects. Expect to see the unexpected, the elegance and images that empower women. 4 Takeaways: 1. Lighting to flatter the subject 2. Posing concepts to hide figure flaws, and enhance the positives 3. Composition for impact 4. Creative ideas to set the photographer apart. Social Media: 6 Secrets to Building Trust

Business and Pleasure

Tofurious (Lawrence Chan)

John Michael & Dalisa Cooper

Facebook. Twitter. Marketing. People like to work with those whom they like and trust. You could be the best photographer in the world, but no one will hire you if you can’t engage him or her the right way. Therefore, learn the psychology behind various social media tactics from a true expert who spends his days helping photographers build their brand via Social Media. Lawrence will help you become the preferred photographer customers love 3 Takeaways: 1. Learn how to humanize your brand, so that it is likable and personable. 2. Apply strategies for becoming a wanted and desired service. 3. Be enchanted by Lawrence Chan’s “Six Rules For Trust” and not because of rainbows and unicorns. Website: www.tofurious.com Bio: Lawrence Chan has been cursed with an insatiable hunger for tofu. When the void is filled, he helps photography businesses outline and execute powerful strategies to enforce their position in an ever-blurring market. Lawrence Chan is the marketing strategist behind the wildly popular photography marketing site www.tofurious.com.

When you’re the guy who invented “Trash the Dress,” how do you follow that? One of the most intriguing studios in the world, AltF continues to seek out inspiration, even after 25 years in the business. John Michael and Dalisa Cooper will share how they constantly find and develop new ideas, simultaneously pushing the envelope and keeping their clients happy. As they put it, “If we live for our images and art then we should also to be able to live off of our images and art.” John and Dalisa will show you how to be profitable and have a sustainable business without compromising your passion for the art that you are creating or the value that you place on it. 3 Takeaways: 1. How to find inspiration. 2. How to mesh art and business together. 3. How to make money from what you love doing. Website: www.altf.com Bio: John Michael Cooper – Talk about being around the block a few times, this guy is basically a photography whore. In the last 25 years, there’s not much he hasn’t seen or done or re-done in the photography world. Still proud of the fact that he has yet to win photography awards or fallen into the world of kissing corporate ass, he continues to do things his own damn way… the Altf way. Nobody took the time to teach him the rules, so he doesn’t play by them. Dalisa Cooper – Dalisa lives at the crossroad of where business meets art meets pleasure. Dalisa grew up with one goal in mind: She wanted to own a successful business. Along came this brilliant, amazing artist – John Michael Cooper who just needed one thing; to be freed to be the artist that he was. Dalisa took over those daunting tasks that he so dreaded. Although they often consult on major business and art endeavors, they allow each other to do what we do best in order to maintain their insanity. That formula makes Altf what it is today.

Having spent 15 years refining her pricelist, Sandy Puc’ realized she had very little room for change with a maximum 10% to 20% increase each year. The only way to make a positive change in income was to make a drastic change in pricing. Enter the Credit System. This unique program increased sales dramatically with clients spending far more and excited to do so. Learn how this innovative pricing structure drastically changed Sandy’s income and how you can put it to work for you too. Bio: Sandy’s passion for connecting with people and her remarkable ability to capture her subjects’ personality make her one of the world’s premier portrait photographers. Powerful Wedding Day Story Telling

Looking Back and Going Forward

Storey Wilkins

David A. Williams

The last time Storey Wilkins appeared at a DWF Convention, she received a standing ovation for her powerful message:

One of the most popular educators -and speakers- in the history of the DWF, we’re privileged to have David speak at DWF Convention 2012.

Telling a great wedding story with photographs that are joyful, professional and powerful is visual communication at its best. Documenting your clients’ thoughts and feelings as their wedding day races by is a skill. Translating it into a wonderful family history book is an art. Storey will take you through her natural, thoughtful and emotional approach to photographing weddings.

David will speak about how to absorb and celebrate a few of the greats from the history of photography – dissecting the key elements, and feeding off the energy of greats like Richard Avedon, Norman Parkinson and George Hurrell. See the process and research involved in making a homage image work using 1930’s Hollywood, and some current industry ‘stars’. Enjoy a ‘David-hearted’ look at images that are more about light and techniques we’ve maybe forgotten about in our haste to rush to the next shiny thing.
