EVENT INFORMATION SCOUT-O-RAMA WHAT IS SCOUT-O-RAMA? Scout-O-Rama is the annual “Show –N– Do” of Scouting in the Black Hills Area Council. Scouts and their families can enjoy a fun-filled day of exhibits, displays, and competition. Any local Pack, Troop, Team, or Crew may participate. QUALITY LEADERS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

S

ince the inception of the Black Hills Area Council in 1930, Scouts have learned to live the principles of the Scout Oath and Law. Over the past 84 years the Black Hills Area Council has developed some of our community’s BEST citizens and public servants. In honor of that this year’s scout-o-rama theme will be Quality Leaders Under Construction CUB SCOUT DISPLAYS Cub Scout Packs are encouraged to pick an activity or display that offers Scout-O-Rama visitors and other Scouts a chance to have fun and learn a skill; strive to make your display interactive. Displays should incorporate a Quality Leaders Under Construction theme related to a Cub Scout rank requirement, activity, or elective. BOY SCOUT / TEAM / VENTURING DISPLAYS Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Teams and Venture Crews are being challenged to present a display that demonstrate how your unit trains and develops Quality leaders

Use your imagination and have fun! Scout must be able to talk about the presentation and/or materials. Presentations will be judged on three categories: participation/education, construction quality, and Scout knowledge; see below for entire Judging Criteria.

PLANNING TIPS Manning a table exhibit or display can be a strain on any unit. Encourage each of your boys to participate and schedule out their day. Smaller units might consider joining up with another unit and manning it together. Each unit should strive to follow these three basic objectives: 1. Keep it SIMPLE – Make it FUN! 2. Plan something that involves the public with your youth. 3. Look for ways to demonstrate Scouting’s values. DISPLAY LOCATIONS Each unit will be assigned one table. The assigned location of your table will not be finalized until the Tuesday before Scout-O-Rama. A map indicating the exact location will be available at the Registration Booth on the day of the event. DISPLAY REQUIREMENTS Each unit will be assigned one approximately 8 foot long table and two chairs. Each unit should have a Unit Flag, a First-aid Kit, and a Promotional Sign identifying your unit number, your chartering organization, your home city, and your unit leader. Additional signage may include meeting times and locations. Limited electricity will be available at the table locations. Please specify the need for electricity at time of registration. DISPLAY SET-UP & TEAR DOWN Tables will be set-up at the mall on the morning of March 15th. Units may begin setting up their individual areas at 8:00am, but should be ready for the Opening Ceremony no later than 9:45am. Tear down should not begin before the finish of the closing ceremony; after 4:00pm. For units that will have different displays in the morning and afternoon periods, both displays must be in the display area before the opening ceremony.

DISPLAY JUDGING CRITERIA Judging of displays will begin at 10:00am and continue through-out the day. Participation ribbons will be presented to all units based on the following criteria: 1. Theme: Does your display demonstrate the “theme”? • Cub Scouts: age appropriate; rank requirement, activity, or elective incorporated • Boy Scouts/Team Members/Ventures: participation/education, construction quality, and Scout knowledge 2. Presentation: Does the non-Scouting public understand your message? 3. Knowledge: Do your youth understand the subject they are presenting? 4. Audience Participation: Does your display involve the audience? 5. Appearance: Is the display attractive? Are the youth courteous? Is the buddy system in use? 6. Requirements: Does your display have the required elements: Unit Flag, First-aid Kit, and Promotional Sign? 7. Uniform: Are the Scouts and Leaders in full uniform? 8. Age-appropriateness: Is the activity appropriate for the age of the youth participating? 9. Originality: Is the subject of your display unique and/or original? 10. Unit Participation: Are each of the youth helping in the unit’s display/presentation?


PINEWOOD DERBY PURPOSE The purpose of this document is to make sure that the participants in the Black Hills Area Council’s annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby have as much fun as possible by understanding the guidelines of the event, as well as, learning a few tips along the way. The Black Hills Area Councils’ Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is a parent/guardian and son event and is recommended as such by the National Boy Scouts of America. The Pinewood Derby Committee STRONGLY SUGGESTS that each parent emphasize this idea with your son.

time and not good another time. You can always be a good person, whether or not you have good car-building skills. Remember, you and your friends are individuals first and racers second. This idea is often called having respect for others. The second thing to remember is to follow the rules. Without rules, there would be no Pinewood Derby. You will never know if you are really good at doing something unless you follow the rules. This is often called being honest.

Two things the Pinewood Derby requires each participant to learn are: 1. The craft skills necessary to build a car, and 2. The rules that must be followed. Even more important, though, is how we act and behave while participating in the Pinewood Derby or any other group activity.

The third thing to remember about good sportsmanship is that there are winners and losers in every competition. You accept this when you choose to compete. There may be times when you win and feel happy, and times when you lose and feel unhappy. Being a winner is easy, and losing is sometimes hard. If you win, you must not brag or gloat. If you lose, you must not feel jealous or bitter.

SPORTSMANSHIP The first thing to remember about sportsmanship is that everyone’s skills are a little different. You may be good at something like singing or drawing, but not as good at something else like basketball or computers. Parents have different skill levels, too. This doesn’t mean that you are a good person one

To be a good sportsman, you must be able to say “I did my best” and be satisfied with the results. You must also be able to appreciate and feel happy for someone else when they run a good race or build a neat car. Remember, the main “Purpose” of this event is to have FUN! If you have fun and help others to have fun, then we are all winners!

PINEWOOD DERBY RULES 1. All cars must pass an inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete. The official inspectors have the right to disqualify Pinewood Derby cars which do not meet the rules and specifications, even though the car passed the inspection at the Pack level. If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment. CARS CAN BE RE-INSPECTED AT ANY TIME FOR COMPLIANCE. All decisions of the race officials are final. 2. The car must have been made during the current scouting year. 3. Only one car per Cub Scout may be registered in the Cub Scout Race. 4. All cars must be inspected before the official Cub Scout Race. The inspection points are: 5. Maximum Overall Width of the car shall not exceed 2.75 inches. 6. Maximum Length of the car shall not exceed 7.00 inches. 7. Maximum Wheelbase of the car shall not exceed 4 3/8 inches (plus or minus 1/8 inch). The distance from center of the front axle slot (front axle hole) to the center of the rear axle slot (rear axle hole) cannot be altered from that of the official BSA kit. 8. Maximum Weight of the car shall not exceed 5.00 ounces (141.75 grams). The official Pinewood Derby Race scale shall be considered final. 9. Maximum Height of the car shall not exceed 3.00 inches. 10. Minimum Track Clearance of 3/8 inches (0.375).

This is the measurement between the bottom of the car and top of the track. Only official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby wheels are permitted. Wheels may be lightly sanded for roundness and to remove the seam from the wheels. Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass or in reducing the wheel width from the original BSA kit. Some of the original “tread marks” knurled edge wheels must not be beveled, cut, drilled, perforated, rounded, tapered, turned or thinned or any other significant altering of the shape of the wheels or wheel hubs is prohibited. Only Official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby axles are permitted. Axles shall be as provided in the official BSA kit. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs. Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting and interior details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, weight and height specifications. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in or on the car. Adjustments to the weight of the car must be accomplished prior to registration. Any lead, coins or washers added for weight must be securely fastened to the car. The front of the car must not protrude over the starting post. Any other “design detail” that, in the sole determination of the Pinewood Derby Committee and Chairperson, provides an unfair starting advantage will not be allowed.

THE RACES UNIT QUALIFIER RACES Each Pack may send FOUR registered BHAC Cub Scouts to represent their unit at the Pinewood Derby Race; one Tiger, one Wolf, one Bear and one Webelos Scout. Note: A Scout that has crossed over to Boy Scouts, but was the winning Webelos Scout for the unit, may race as a Webelos Scout on race day.

CELEBRITY RACE A Celebrity Pinewood Derby Race will be held at 10:30 am to officially start the Black Hills Area Council Pinewood Derby. This race is by invitation only. A trophy will be presented to the winning Celebrity, which is displayed at the sponsoring organization until the next Scout-O-Rama.

Each Cubmaster must submit the names of their qualifying Cub Scouts to Bobbi Jean Jarvinen (bobbijean@rap.midco.net) no later than March 10th. Include the Cub Scout’s name, his unit number, and his rank (Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos).

A single leader from each Pack must collect the cars prior to the race, and then register the four cars together for the Pack; individual submissions will not be accepted. Plan ahead. All cars must be registered, inspected and checked in prior to the start of the Celebrity Race. All cars will be on display and stay in the race area until individual class (Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos) races are over. The first Tiger Cub Scout heat will take place following the Celebrity Race (approximately 10:30 am); the Championship Races will begin after all races are completed (approximately 2:30 pm). Note: These times are approximate; please see updated schedules on race day. Trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each class (Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos) and for the top four finalists in the Championship Race. The Championship Race will be held for the top finalists from each class.

OPEN CLASS RACES Any one may design, build, enter a car and participate in the open class race of the Pinewood Derby. All registered Cub Scouts that did not represent their unit may participate in this race, as may your brothers, dads, sisters, grandpas, etc. So build a car and put your skills to the test. Open Class Races will run following the Championship Race until the start of the Awards Ceremony, we will do our best to ensure everyone races, but this may not be guaranteed based on the number of participants.

During the 2014 Scout-O-Rama join us on ‘MAIN STAGE” for games and contest, we will be featuring the scouts and scouters of the Black Hills Area Council demonstrating their talents throughout the day. AMAZING prizes will be awarded to the winners of each competition.

12:00 PM DANCE OFF Both youth and adult scouters are eligible to sign up for the BHAC 2014 dance off championship, each contestant will have 30 seconds to “breakit-down” to the music in front of our live studio audience. Winners will be decided based on rhythm and audience applause.

1:00 PM PUZZLE SPECTACULAR Two contestants will face off in this timed event, each contestant will receive 7 puzzle pieces that they must but together in correct order to win the GRAND prize and bragging rights.

It’s Showtime! 2:00 PM SCOUTMASTER INTERPRETIVE DANCE COMPETITION Ever feel like the scouts in your troop or pack just don’t think you’re cool anymore? Prove them wrong in this winner takes all competition, using pre-selected scouting props show off your “cool” dance moves and win back the hearts and minds of your youth! Winner will walk away with a pizza party for their whole unit. 3:00 PM SCOUTS GOT TALENT ALL youth scouts are welcome to our final event of the day, Scouts are encouraged to show off their own unique talent, weather it’s playing the guitar, singing, or reciting a short story, whatever the talent may be, this talent show is sure to be a crowd favorite.
