What is Kodiak? The Kodiak Challenge Venturing Camp is oriented around a week long high adventure trek with leadership training and involvement woven into the adventure. The week long experience prepares Venturing Scout to be a “servant leader” as they lead their peers. The experience consists of five trek days where one leadership skill is learned per day, and a final component to teach reflection and evaluation of the Venturing Scout’s performance. It pushes the boundaries of every Venturer and will encourage the trying new things that may be out of a venture’s comfort zone. This amazing week of Venturing camp is designed to be relevant to the participant’s life, to become internalized, is based on the servant leader concept, and is based out of Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch, but most of all, it’s FUN!!
-The Kodiak Challenge Venturing Camp is not about the trek; it’s about leadership skills.

Climbing & C.O.P.E.
Caving
Our climbing & COPE program will offer climbers of varying ability ranges the opportunity to expand their skills. Our Staff will work thru basics of climbing and rappelling on-site on our climbing tower. Then after your scouts have shown their competency on the tower, the group will head out to natural rock faces here in the Black Hills. Climbs will be based on the abilities of the group and will be tailored to fit the needs and talents of each group individually. C.O.P.E. is an exciting team and confidence building experience that combines initiative games, physical elements, and problem solving. Every participant must set a personal goal in an area they want to improve (overcoming a fear of heights is popular). The eight goals of COPE are: communication, planning, teamwork, trust, leadership, decision making, problem solving, and self-esteem. *Sessions are limited.
Medicine Mountain’s caving program is a rare and exciting opportunity to spend time underground within a scouting program. All participants must successfully complete the MMSR Caving Orientation; and meet the physical size requirements (fit thru an 8”X 20” opening) prior to entering any cave. Orientation and instruction covers topics such as: safety, ethics, environmental concerns, “White Nose Syndrome”, cave conservation, geology and hydrology. Scouts will also have an opportunity thru the National Parks Service to complete a service project. Access to caves is provided under a special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service. *Sessions are limited.
Mountain Biking Our Mountain Biking program is designed to show some of the prime biking trails in the Black Hills. Our Program includes instruction on bike repair, planning, and safety… and a lot of trail riding! *Sessions are limited. Participants are welcome to bring their own bike; helmets are always required and can be supplied if needed.
