Question: How do you feel the casting process can be a use as a design tool for Interior Architects? In my opinion, making casting can improve understanding of space, because casting models can give a vivid impression about surface, volume, shape and size. And also casting models have simple, geometrical shape and smooth texture which can make strong visual information to other people.
How successful you feel the outcome of your individual cast is?
I think it is a little bit successful that the model keep the overall shape without too much crush. However, some parts of the model have been damaged when the formwork was removed and the bottom not flat because of some process’s mistakes. Also the detail like window frames and door frames didn’t show in this model.
What would you do differently if you repeated the exercise ?
I would add some detail into my casting model, and pay more attention on the surface and pay the gaps between different platforms. Also, I would make a more detailed plan before I start to make formwork.
How successful you feel your group’s building has been represented through the combined casts?
The overall appearance is not good as we imaged, which I think is because our model’s measure could not match to each other. And every models have more or less damage about the detail, and some of them are not flat.
How do they inform your understanding of the existing building?
The casting models highlight the difference between height of celling, outlook, connection between different space. That gives me a more visual impress about all the quality and quantity about the space within the existing building.
How could you use casting in your studio practice during the IAD course?
Making casting provide a better way to understand the space, including the change of space caused by different texture, size, shape etc. Also, what make casting model special is theirs elegant texture and colour, which create a beautiful effect on your design.
