Project Description

The Memory Bench This project involves capturing the public’s memories of Dreamland from when it was open and successful, and sharing them with people who are not familiar with Dreamland. We are designing and building a graft for an existing bench, opposite the Deamland Amusement Park building. This graft is a self standing back rest, in which we will be fitting mp3 players too in order to play our audio memories of Dreamland. The reason for this new addition to the existing bench, is so that the public can sit back and look at the Dreamland building, while listening to the audio memories we have collected. As an extra we plan to hand out free CD’s of the memories, so that the public can share them with their families and friends.

Project development Precedents

Precedents for our Audio instillation in Margate. An idea of how to organise and display our archive of precious audio’s when we collect them. Susan Hiller, London The one called “Witness” is a blue-lit room with a bunch of microphones suspended by clear wires. Each microphone has the voice of a different person, spoken in all different languages, talking about their experiences with UFOs or other extra terrestrial things. So a few people were in the room, including me and Brooke, and we were all going from microphone to microphone, listening to people’s stories. And every couple of minutes, the microphones would go silent, and one story would be played loudly from above. At which point, everyone stopped where they were and listened. It was incredible. I left feeling very moved, but also extremely uncomfortable. I didn’t want to believe what I’d heard, but it was almost as if I was forced to believe, even just for those few minutes. Reflection

This project was about observing our environment and determining how to influence it in a positive manner. For us we learned that taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, enabled us to move on and accomplish the result we did. Halfway through the project, we all got extremely frustrated and lost sight of what we were trying to do and achieve as a practice. We revisited some of the group’s work/ research material, and recognized that we were taking the wrong approach. Our initial goal was to create a time machine, so we tried to incorporate this idea and design something that represented this. The big questions we all had to ask ourselves was, what is a time machine? and what does a time machine look like? The group struggled drastically on this, we did not find a direct path and solution. We disagreed on many issues, mainly on structure and aesthetics of the design. With help and guidance from The Decorators, we were able to finalize our approach on how to create this time machine. Throughout the development of this project, we identified areas where we could engage with others in active sharing and mutual learning. Occasionally the group dynamic was disconnected, which caused our project to suffer in some areas.

“Having played the role of both Managing Director and Finical Manager, I had a lot of responsibility within the practice and the project itself. Managing the group had its ups and downs, in the way that some members found it hard to follow instructions and complete tasks by the deadlines set. Although it was very stressful at times, in the end everything came together smoothly and we were able to achieve our goals. I was very happy with the outcome of this project and it has showed me what could be done in the future.” - Sophia Clunies-Ross

“Although the bench did not go to plan, we still were able to finish our work very nicely and achieve our goals” - Xinzhou Jiang “As Creative director my tasks did not go the way I initially planned, in terms of layout, colour and visuals. In some ways, I felt like I had failed in my goal. My initial desire was to create a strong playful yet simple image for InTime. However, after some research and reflection, I realized that it had less to do with what I wanted and more to do with how it was going to connect and communicate to an audience. Also due to lack of time and other commitments it was all a bit rushed.” - Sara Ogbonna-Godfrey This project (Creative Practice) has taught us a lot about business skills, teamwork and social learning; All these skills are extremely important within the design industry.
