Biomimicry is the technique of using technology and innovation to replicate the natural design processes. The future of this trend will lead us to create artificial objects that better resemble nature and since we are also part of nature, is better fit for us humans as well. Nature continues to inspire and influence, this trend combines animals, plants, and microbes with human’s technologies.

The Influencers

This trend draws inspiration from innovative sculpture artists who are producing work based on nature but through the technique of biomicry. After a year of experimenting with sculpted glass, plexiglass and wood, Duffy London has produced this Kraken Abyss Table. The table is designed with underwater seascapes, and geological cross sections, like looking into the darkest depths of the ocean.

In this VM trend we see plastic take a contemporary structure. Designers set to play on panelling and form to achieve colourful and iridescent reflections. The colour palette is vibrant and the tones are energetic but the colour changes when sunlight passes through, the colours become more pearlescent and pastel like.

The Influencers

Patricia Urquiola

The influencers of this trend came from Milan’s 2016 design week that showcased innovators from all around the world. BC Barcelona was a highlight of the week. Initially inspired by aquariums and fish tanks, the Campana brothers have created a piece that reflects and creates light through brightly coloured bubble like shapes. The use of these fluorescent shapes created a sense of movement and transformation.

Patricia Urquiola has designed a series of iridescent furniture out of glass that was released at this year’s Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan. The products are coated in a finish that reflects different colours depending on the vantage point.

This trend is about getting back to the root of raw materials. Shoes, clothes, food, accessories and art are influenced by roughly textured natural fibres, primitive rough-hewn stonework, shaggy fibre piles, or even inter-woven tree branches. There is a slight tribal approach when talking about this trend and the primitive forms of living. It symbolizes the relationship between mankind and nature, and recalls ancestor habits and routines.

Food plays an important roll in this trend and photographers like Carla Plukkel and Carnet Parsien represent that. They photograph food as raw as it can get and this led us to be inspired by the strong colours and earthy brittle textures.

The Influencers Carla Plukkel

“ Inspired by the intricate forms and soft muted tones of natural sea treasures washed ashore and housed in a series of still life interior installations, Sea Art captured the beauty created when forms, textures and materials converge.”

Fig 31 Charles Fréger photographed rituals from all around the world that celebrate the seasonal cycle, fertility, life, and death. People literally put themselves into the skin of the “savage,” in masquerades that stretch back centuries. By becoming a bear, a goat, a stag, a wild boar, a man of straw, a devil, or a monster with jaws of steel, these people celebrate the cycle of life and seasons.

Fig 23

Carnet

Carla Plukkel photographs food in the raw and unprocessed nature that it is. The photographs look like century old paintings and food of the kings. The Black background makes room for the vibrant colours within the coarse foods and also adds an ancestry organic edge.

This trend is about a more toned down colour palette featuring gunmetal, coppers and silver shades. Today not so many consumers ponder the idea of owning a metallic coat, a pair of metallic trousers or a shiny bomber jacket but designers such as Versace have turned this trend into something vey wearable and urban that consumers want to wear.

Fig 37

Calvin Klein takes metallic back to the basics and introduces it with relaxed tailoring. Classics such as the camel coat were front and centre, layered with a striking bronze under coat which added a fun and new take on the tend.

Italo Zucchelli takes this trend to the extreme in head to toe metallic with a holographic sheen, taking inspiration from winter sports and smart snow wear.

Zigerli

Calvin Klein enforced this trend and put an urban twist on the metallic look whereas Versace took metallic down a sport route. Both designers influenced the trend and consumers can either play it cool or current.

This trend was initially spotted at the Premium trade shows in Berlin. We noticed a lot of strong textures, exaggerated shapes, black framing and industrial aesthetics throughout the show; the trend focuses on black being a texture. If paired with a colour we noticed that is was more than often red, which added a dangerous feel to it.

Nivanh Chanthara is a concept artist for online gaming. The conceptual renderings of these cyber warriors feature some of the most compelling aesthetics, design details and material warping characteristics, which is what this trend is about.

All aspects of art forms and expressions influence this trend from cyber punk subcultures, Game design and parametric. It is the combination of all these things that makes up this tend. Orcim is the intersection of wearable technology, culture identification and most importantly urban innovation.

Geometric shapes have become increasingly popular in the past year or so and so has the lust for the 70’s within fashion design. In 2017 we see these two trends join together to create a fusion of geometric power under the influence of the 70’s. Expect to see the geometrics in mustard colour tones along with mint green and oranges.

Poly

Mika Barr has developed 3D fabrics that fold, fracture and turn three-dimensional from a flat pattern. The textiles are multifunctional and have been used for furniture, lighting, fashion and accessories. The patterns follow a very strong grid like form of geometric shapes that is warped in a way to look three dimensional.

The influences for this trend came from artists who use different mediums. They mix with other materials like marble and textiles to give different geometric outcomes.

Fig 64 Low poly was original used for online game design but we then realised its aesthetic value and it became somewhat of an art form. Low poly can give a certain retro style conceptually similar to pixel art orienting on ‘classic’ video games.
