Life Lessons Matthew 16: 4 — “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Our faith in Jesus should be based on the fact that He is God, not on signs and miracles. When the people saw the miracles of Christ, they believed in Him, but with a weak faith that was easily shaken. So Jesus gave them the sign of Jonah. As Jonah had spent three days in the belly of the great fish, so Jesus would spend three days “in the heart of the earth” before His resurrection (Matt. 12: 40). This provided the people proof that He is the Messiah. Still, many did not believe. It is only when we look past the miracle to the reason for His resurrection— His great plan of redemption— that we have a faith that endures.
