LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
“If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life”. As a fine gardener for high end residential clients and communities around the coast of the Great Lakes, I quickly fell in love with gardens and different outdoor spaces. When I came across the profession of landscape architecture, it seemed as if I had finally found my niche- a place to express myself artistically with plants and landscapes. I approach each design as if I’m being commissioned to make a custom piece of art by each client. With each project, I try to do all the good I can, whenever I can, wherever I can- even on the scale of a quarter acre design project. As landscape architects we have the unique position of making choices that make outdoor living spaces ecologically sound without sacrificing aesthetics. The true heart of the profession is using a multidisciplinary approach to realize the full potential of a design. This approach furthers me to my goal of having a large and lasting positive impact on the environment while practicing the art.

The Herschend residence is a home that will serve as an entertaining space for a couple and their newly adult children. To accomodate this, a pool, spa, outdoor kitchen and an outdoor living room are proposed. To minimize the impact on the existing trees on the site, the design only requires three trees to be removed. Eleven trees are proposed to be planted, exceeding the standards of the City of Atlanta’s tree recompense policy. Further, the site will include a Triton Chamber System to accommodate forty cubic feet of stormwater, again exceeding the requirements set forth by the City of Atlanta. The underwater storage system will be located on the East side of the property in the proposed lawn.

The Leber Residence is designed to provide an exceptional garden experience without sacrificing function and maintaining a low maintenance commitment. As part of the design program, a twostory structure that served as both a Mother-In-Law suite and a three-car garage was sited. In accordance with the Atlanta Tree Recompense Program, all trees impacted by the proposed driveway and grading were offset with tree plantings in the backyard as well as around the new driveway. Two stormwater catchment structures are located to the Northeast and the Southwest of the residence to maintain compliance with the City of Atlanta.

Planting design and plant choices were inspired by Piet Ouldof’s “Planting the Natural Garden”- specifically taking note of Oudolf’s plant suggestions for a low maintenance garden. To maintain the classic elements of a southern garden, Plants in Design: A Guide to Designing with Southern Landscape Plants by Brad E. Davis and David Nichols. Materials and overall design were inspired by Oehme Van Sweden residential gardens in Connecticut.

The Lyndon House is a formal art centered used as a public space in Athens, Georgia. The focus of the of the addition of the sculpture garden is to accentuate the inherent formality of the arts center as well as bolster outdoor public interest and circulation by implementing curvilinear landscape design and formal elements. The intention is to make the North area of the arts center inward focused with increased numbers of access points for visitors. The six sculptures that have been chosen to be featured in the garden are all imitate nature with zinc and chrome plating. There is ample event space outside, maintaining the current area as a place where people can organize. Plantings have been carefully chosen to be native and allow for year-round interest and change within the gardens.

contemporary international design inspired by vladmir djurovic spring 2021 • university of georgia

ELIZABETH MARIE
Vladmir Djurovic was the chosen designer to be the inspiration for an entry plaza to an environmental law firm in Beruit, Lebanon. The main design elements that were chosen to emulate Djurovic’s work is the use of reflecting pools and rectilinear forms. The seating is a color that is often seen in Mediterranean landscapes- a rich terra cotta. The plaza also contains a space dedicated to employees that is not separate from public use should an occasion arise that it serves a multi-purpose function. Lastly, a classic Mediterranean plant palette is chosen to allow the design to remain contextual to the region.

piedmont preserve fall 2021 • university of georgia
Situated just North of Prince Avenue and and West of Chase Street in Athens, Georgia, the 50 acres of the Piedmont Preserve is a treasure waiting to be realized. Registered with the Athens Land Trust, this site offers an opportunity for active ecological restoration, community recreation and as a site for outdoor education for the Wild Earth Camp. In the proposed design, the main focus is to maximize educational opportunities and restoration of different ecological communities while also thinking of community recreation opportunities. The creek on the northern part of the parcel is proposed to be restored to its naturally existing condition. The wetland surrounding this area is also proposed to be restored by damming the existing culvert used to drain it. A boardwalk and bridge are proposed for the circulation in and around the wetland to prevent impact from heavy foot traffic. In the middle part of the parcel, the meadow separating two masses of woodlands is proposed to be connected by native tree plantings to restore the ecological corridor. Trails have been added to create more options for circulation and recreation. The mountain bike trails are also expanded on. The proposed Greenway connection on the southernmost part of the parcel is also shown with trail connections to create circulation between the Greenway.

Four outdoor classrooms have been sited to each be in a different ecological area- one near a restored wetland forest, one adjacent to the meadow, one in a restored woodland, and one near a creek. Two of the proposed classrooms are covered paviiions with chalkboards which offers a space for Wild Earth Campers during poor weather. A turn-around drop off area is located off of Winston Drive to provide parents and guardians a place to safely drop off their children. A pavilion and bathroom are sited to be adjacent to the turn-around to provide shelter and a chance for parents to help their kids to the bathrooms if needed.

COMPOSITE SITE INVENTORY Using ArcGIS Pro, an in-depth analysis of existing site conditions, setbacks, site infrastructure and plant communities were placed on a composite map to show the existing opportunities and constraints that would later be used to inform the design process and location of program elements. Opportunities and constraints were considered for three different conceptual designs, each focusing on maximizing different categories of programmatic elements. The three categories that were “maximized” were recreation, education, and ecological restoration.

Once this was completed, the three conceptual designs were analyzed for their strongest elements in terms of achieving programmatic elements and being conscious of the existing site elements. The final design focused heavily on education and preservation and then elements of recreation were added that were low-impact elements, such as trails and camping pads.

One of the main needs of the Piedmont Preserve is ample parking for the park visitors and the Wild Earth Camp staff. Using site analysis, it was clear that the most appropriate space for the 56-stall parking lot is in the Northeastern portion of the parcel. Two rain gardens on either end of the parking lot allow for green infrastructure as well as an opportunity to teach the Wild Earth Camp-goers about stormwater and infiltration. An entirely native planting plan as well as a grading and drainage plan were also included.

The Stephens residence is a modest home in the heart of Athens, Georgia. The client had recently purchased the home after his 13-year-old dachshund had passed away. The main goal was to imagine a backyard for a puppy that would be fenced in and had more interest than a sprawling cottage lawn. Considering an area that pooled in the backyard, two mature oak trees and bright morning sun, native plants and a mulched bed were proposed and installed connecting the two trees- creating an area of interest in the once empty lawn. A custom fence was designed and installed to match the drop in slope by stepping down between fence panels instead of a gradually sloping fence. The client, a Professor of Philosophy, shared this quote with me once the construction of the design was finished:

ELDER RESIDENCE fall 2021 • royal landscape and gardens position: sales and lead designer
below: arbor entrance from the street
Located on the Middle Oconee River in Athens, Georgia, the Elders were challenged by their incredibly steep quarter acre lot where they had been living for ten years. The Elders were looking to find a way for their elderly parents to be able to walk from the road to their house- a 17% slope downward to the front door. On the existing site, the driveway was the only path down to the house from the road which was difficult to walk on even as an able-bodied person. An arbor at the top of the hill adjacent to the road was installed to signify to the guests of the home that this would be the beginning of the walk to the home. Seven steps, followed by a landing pad for a break, and then seven more steps brings guests to the parking pad level with the front door of the house. Each step is a locally sourced granite slab that provides a one foot wide step for the elderly parents to maintain stability while walking down. The slope of the site also posed drainage problems, so a dry creek bed was proposed from the road down to the river to guide the water away from the driveway and foundation of the house.
