All elements of the design must be of your own creation, producing your own photos and/or produce your own illustrations, maps, charts and graphs. SOLUTION This 96-page book on Colony Collapse Disorder features topics that explain the “Survival” topic of Disappearing Bees. Chapters include, The Bascis and The Plan, explaining what CCD is and what we can do to help the survival of the bee population. All photography, graphs, charts and illustrations were designed by me.

now have a comprehensive recycling program in place, including technology products and organic waste. In fall 2008, we implemented a company-wide program for commingled recycling. All Juicy Couture stores and headquarter offices now have comprehensive recycling programs in place, including recycling bins for customers in our stores. The enhanced recycling program captures all aluminum, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and compostable materials, greatly reducing the amount of waste Juicy Couture generates. Additionally, we now track all materials we divert from landfills so we know how much progress we’re making. To date we have been able to divert approximately 70% of recyclable and organic (where applicable) materials from going to the landfills

01 WHAT IS UPCYCLING? Upcycling is similar to recycling in that you are taking something and reworking it into a new form for continued use. However the main difference is that in the case of upcycling you are generally not altering its form back into its components for reuse. For example, you have an old soup can, in recycling you would bring it back to a recycling center or put it out with the rest of your recyclables. The recycling center sorts the cans out and sends them out to be recycled, where the can would most likely be melted down to make a new can along will all the other old cans that are no longer in use. In upcycling you would clean the can, stick some contact paper on it, and call it a pencil cup. In both cases the can is no longer being used for its intended purpose (it’s been repurposed) and has not entered a landfill. The material of the can is being used for a new purpose- however the upcycled version of reuse has the can still being a can. The can may be recycled back into a can, but it still has to be remelted and reshaped.

The sad truth is that we live in a culture of consumption, where buying products to facilitate our lifestyle is a fact of life. However, true greens are asking us to change that mind set. The moral of the story is to think before you buy, and to buy in moderation. Conservation is as important, if not more so, than recycling, reusing or upcycling. With all of the options available to the savvy consumer, the simple act of choosing a brand of toilet paper to buy can really become something to think about. Maureen O’Connor, publisher of greensavvy lifestyle site AlternativeConsumer. com, has the following tips for eco-conscious consumers: “I think it’s important for people not to get overwhelmed by the need to become more eco-conscious. Most of us lead hectic, fast-paced lives. We should do our best to make changes as quickly as possible, but realize that we can’t change our entire life, overnight. Sometimes we just need to step back, slow down and take a deep breath. Appreciate what’s around us, and clear our minds.”

02 HISTORY OF UPCYCLING

Upcycling is different from simply reusing a product however, since you are actually altering the product. In the case of the soup can, the can has been repurposed for a new use. It’s not being used to hold soup anymore- it’s a still a vessel but it’s been giving a new lease on life as it were. Reuse would be more similar to reusing the container that your deli salad comes in to store leftovers in the fridge. In both cases the end result is the same- the containers don’t end up in a landfill- but they aren’t the same thing. If you were to make your own CD stamper out of the deli container and some tubing, then it would be upcycled. The term upcycling generally refers to the repurposing of waste materials or those items that were initially intended on being disposable, however the term is increasingly being extended beyond the definition that is given by McDonaugh and Braugart (the authors that orginally coined the term) and is being extended to the repurposing of anything that was intended to end up in the landfill.

In order to further understand this theory, we must look at its history. The term “upcycling” was coined by William McDonough and Michael Braugart in their ground breaking book on ecologically-intelligent design, Cradle to Cradle, published in 2002. In the simplest terms, upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value. It’s a question of designing new products that are intended to be reused again and again and yet again with a minimal amount of harmful by-products, effectively working as a “cradle-to-cradle” model of production. Here’s an example from Cradle to Cradle of the upcycling designer’s new intentions: imagine a world where people casually discard used bottles designed to eventually biodegrade into food for the plant seeds embedded in their bases.

This idea comes in stark opposition to the “cradle-to-grave” view of manufacturing originally conceived during the Industrial Revolution, which is still primarily in practice to this day. As McDonough and Braugart put it, the cradle-to-grave model is one where “resources are extracted, shaped into products, sold and eventually disposed of in a ‘grave’ of some kind, usually a landfill or incinerator...What most people see in their garbage cans is just the tip of the material iceberg; the product itself contains on average only 5 percent of the raw materials involved in the process of making and delivering it.”

Recycling, upcycling, conserving and biodegradability are all key issues today.” So where does this leave us? Ultimately, it’s all a question of choices. Some 35 million Americans regularly buy products that claim to be earth-friendly, according to one report, everything from organic beeswax lipstick from the west Zambian rain forest to Toyota Priuses.”

Matthew Sparkes, a writer TreeHugger.com, commented that the green movement’s rising popularity is due to the fact that “people are far more aware of environmental issues now. There [are] also a lot of very cool green products, which is tremendously important. Buying green doesn’t mean sacrificing style or quality. While buying “earth friendly” products is a commendable choice, the question remains: are these products really helping any existing environmental problems, or are they merely a trendy option that will soon die out? And what of “green washing,” wherein companies simply present an environmentally positive image to appeal to green consumers, while making no effort to back up their environmental claims? The Times article points out that green consumerism, while a considerate alternative to conventional buying habits, is still just that — consumerism. Buying more stuff, even if it’s eco-friendly, still produces waste, be it in the production process or the after-effects. “Consumers have embraced living green, and for the most part the mainstream green movement has embraced green consumerism. But even at this moment of high visibility and impact for environmental activists, a splinter wing of the movement has begun to critique what it sometimes calls ‘light greens.’”Williams continues to say that “critics question the notion that we can avert global warming by buying so-called earth-friendly products, from clothing and cars to homes and vacations, when the cumulative effect of our consumption remains enormous and hazardous.”

And the numbers tell only half the story. Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation, whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease or neglect, is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if given the chance. Tremendous as the problem of pet overpopulation is, it can be solved if each of us takes just one small step, starting with not allowing our animals to breed.

Such disregard for animal life pervades and erodes our culture. Abandoned and stray companion animals who survive in the streets and alleys of cities and suburbs pose a health threat to humans and other animals. Homeless companion animals get into trash containers, defecate in public areas or on private lawns, and anger citizens who have no understanding of their misery or their needs. Some of these animals scare away or prey upon wildlife, such as birds or frighten small children.

Clearly, pet overpopulation is not just a problem for the animals or for the shelters involved. Each year communities are forced to spend millions of taxpayer dollars trying to cope with the consequences of this surplus of pets. These public costs include services such as investigating animal cruelty, humanely capturing stray animals, and sheltering lost and homeless animals.

STATISTICS & MYTHS

Too many companion animals competing for too few good homes is the most obvious consequence of uncontrolled breeding. However, there are other equally tragic problems that result from pet overpopulation: the transformation of some animal shelters into warehouses, the acceptance of cruelty to animals as a way of life in our society, and the stress that caring shelter workers suffer when they are forced to euthanize one animal after another. Living creatures have become throwaway items to be cuddled when cute and abandoned when inconvenient.

The public health epidemic of dog bites—which number more than 4.5 million each year—is due in part to uncontrolled breeding of pets. Bites by so-called dangerous dogs have drawn an enormous amount of media attention, and fatalities caused by dangerous dogs are a serious concern. Often, the vicious tendencies found in some dog breeds can be attributed to irresponsible breeding without regard for temperament. Neutering can help reduce this aggressive behavior.

THE FACTS

Every day in the United States, thousands upon thousands of puppies and kittens are born because of the uncontrolled breeding of pets. Add to that number the offspring of stray and abandoned companion animals, and the total becomes even more staggering. Every year, between six and eight million dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters; some three to four million of these animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? In one way or another, all of us, including those who do not even have pets are affected by animal overpopulation. Millions of tax dollars are spent annually to care for lost, abandoned, and unwanted pets and millions more to put to sleep those that were not fortunate enough to find a home. The health and safety of our communities is another concern. The greater the population of unwanted animals, the greater the incidence of such animal related issues as rabies, dog bites, cat scratches, traffic accidents, and animal abuse.
