Thirty candidates under 30 years old from all sectors – garden designers, landscapers, grounds maintenance contractors and even arborists – will be featured in a standalone supplement in the November issue of Pro Landscaper. Applicants and nominees will go through to an expert panel, which will choose winners in various sectors, to be announced at the fourth annual FutureScape event on Tuesday 17 November at Sandown Park Racecourse. Royal Parks to recruit first wildlife apprentice The Royal Parks (TRP) is to recruit its first wildlife apprentice, following a donation from the Berkeley Foundation. The successful applicant will be paid a salary while working in The Regent’s Park and studying for a Level 2 Diploma in work-based environmental conservation. They will be employed by one of TRP’s landscape maintenance contractors, The Landscape Group. The Regent’s Park is an important haven for wildlife in the capital. The
park has a wide range of waterfowl, a large urban heronry, and is one of the few places in central London where you can still find hedgehogs. The post-holder’s prime focus will be on habitat management practices that benefit wildlife, including the creation and maintenance of native hedgerows, meadows, copses and reed beds. They will also assist TRP’s wildlife officers in monitoring and identifying wildlife and helping care for waterfowl. Dennis Clarke, TRP’s head of park services said: “We are very pleased to partner with the Berkeley Foundation to provide one lucky apprentice the opportunity to work alongside experts in conservation, wildlife and horticulture in some of the most visited and well known parks in the country. www.royalparks.org.uk
Greenfingers launches ‘A Million Moments’ appeal as new chairman takes up role Greenfingers has announced a major new appeal called ‘A million moments’. The appeal aims to raise £1m to enable 5,000 children in the hospice system to benefit from the inspiring gardens and outdoor spaces created by the charity. The appeal was launched to coincide with John Ashley taking up his role as chair of Greenfingers. Speaking about the launch of the appeal, he said: “At Greenfingers we are acutely aware of the need for us to continue providing hospices with amazing spaces for children with life-limiting conditions. We are inundated with hospices that need our help and are calling
on people today to get behind our new appeal and help us raise the funds to create even more gardens and help even more children. “We will be coming up with ways businesses and individuals can fundraise for the A Million Moments appeal and urge everyone to get involved. By supporting this appeal you will be giving thousands of children the gift of precious moments spent outside in an inspiring natural environment.” To donate to Greenfingers, call 01494 674 749, email info@greenfingerscharity.org.uk or visit the charity’s website at www.greenfingerscharity.org.uk www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Thomas Hoblyn joins Alys Fowler and Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio to bring new peninsula garden to Greenwich Award-winning designer Thomas Hoblyn has entered into a creative collaboration with urban gardener Alys Fowler and led by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio to create a new green oasis on London’s Greenwich Peninsula. The Peninsula Garden features a succession of sculpted green mounds, wildflower banks and London’s newest orchard, alongside an amphitheatre inspired by the geometry of the Giant’s Causeway. The design concept has drawn on the nautical and
industrial heritage of the site, exposing the forms of the original mud flats and of Greenwich’s distant history as London’s market garden. Visitors to the park will experience a ‘carefully cultivated wild garden’ adapting to the changing seasons.

Makita UK and Marshalls are continuing their support of the competition having sponsored it last year and Travis Perkins Group and JA Jones have joined us for 2015. Travis Perkins is a long-standing supporter of developing apprentices in the industry and JA Jones is a leading wholesale nursery based in Southport.

We’ve been working closely with the APL a lot more recently, not just as an organisation but with the members as well and we are pleased to be supporting the competition again.” Produced by RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal winner Jody Lidgard, the garden design serves not only to test the competitors’ build skills but also to inspire those with small gardens. Jacksons RHS Hampton Court Show Garden update Any of you who are regular readers can’t help but have noticed that I’ve mentioned previously that we had a show garden at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show this year. It would be remiss of me not to let you know how it all went, now it’s all over. I must admit to saying that with more than a little relief - it’s been an amazing experience, very busy and pretty exhausting, but all in all very positive. The build up started on 10th through to 28th June and what was just a green piece of parkland was transformed into a stunning (even if I say it myself!) Show Garden. It was fascinating seeing our garden take shape over the weeks, and of course all the other stands, exhibits and show gardens as well. I got a bit nervy the closer we got to the show opening, the media appeared, we had a few interviews and even Monty Don was filmed in the garden and said some very complimentary things about our Jacksons Secret Garden Party. And then in the afternoon of Monday 29th the medals were announced. VIEW FROM THE TOP What does the future hold for our parks and open spaces? In the absence of enough people willing and able to lobby effectively, privatisation could be the least of our worries argues Phil Jones
In the latest in the public parks saga, we are told that parks and open spaces in London will be unsustainable by the end of this decade under their current funding model and this will lead to their privatisation. This may or may not be true and maybe, if it is true, it would be the
the bounds as mentioned already. Few, if they thought about it, would deny the importance of free at the point of use environments such as parks and gardens, greenways and leisure grounds. The obstacle here is
least of our worries. My initial reaction when I read this was to be protective and think: “how can this be?” when there are so many interested parties passionate about maintaining the status of and protecting our public parks? However, I quickly found myself thinking how ineffective all those who fight the cause have been in the past, with little or no prospect of success in the future. Is this too harsh a statement? Well, nothing has really changed; no real progress has been made, has it? Certainly not enough to make any difference. Parks have become just another cause, a niche campaign by passionate enthusiasts most of whom have a vested interest in keeping parks and open spaces. Consider all the campaigns you can think of in the recent past and then consider how many have been or are likely to be successful. Whether they have been trying to prevent a new road, avoid the selling off of a school playing field or preventing the privatisation of the Post Office, or anything for that matter, it is rare for niche groups to win. I think this is mainly because there is not enough passionate interest outside
that these facilities are part of the national psyche, our right, our heritage, as far as we are concerned. However, most people don’t think about them because of that very fact. We are used to having them and there are so many other causes affecting our daily lives that a walk through a park, a picnic with the family in an inner-city garden or few minutes’ peace away from the traffic do not take precedence in our thoughts. The majority take them for granted.

sufficient clout to make any difference. Our precious parks and open spaces are only going one way, irrespective of public or private ownership. Except for a few well funded parks the sad fact is that most are going to go into decline. This cannot be prevented while there are other seemingly higher priorities and while the only people fighting for the cause are those who would naturally do so anyway due of their past involvement, be it social or professional. To survive in any form they need a wider recognition and a huge campaign to champion their value to each and every one of us. They need an extraordinary effort, one which sadly I feel will not materialise. Privatisation? That may be the least of our worries!
PARKS HAVE BECOME JUST ANOTHER CAUSE, A NICHE CAMPAIGN BY PASSIONATE ENTHUSIASTS Action groups and forums have limited effect because they are just not big enough and have little or no clout. The Parks Alliance is a great example, having the right cause and the right argument, but really only communicating with a very limited audience that is already interested. Beyond that who gets the message and therefore who cares? Whether parks are privatised or not remains to be seen (and that is not necessarily a bad thing anyway, is it?). My feelings are that there is not enough that can be done and not enough people with

Andrew Wilson explores the work of the quantity surveyor and questions why life often becomes more difficult when they are involved with landscape contracts We love to work with architects. The opportunity to deliver an entire environment of built form, interior and exterior space is exciting and fulfilling. But with larger schemes comes the involvement of the QS, or quantity surveyor for the uninitiated. At this stage, discussions often take a nosedive. The QS seems to have enjoyed a singular education that divorces them from the natural environment, with many seemingly intent on removing anything not identifiable as construction from their contracts. I worked with many early in my career as I was a landscape architect within a large architectural practice. Only one member of the QS team stood out, David Braithwaite, who is sadly no longer with us. He was genuinely interested in plants, soft landscaping and the wider environment and worked creatively alongside me as schemes developed. What is more, he always defended the landscape elements of any scheme, seeing them as part of the bigger picture. It wasn’t always possible to work with him but the difference he made was astounding.
THE QS SEEMS TO HAVE ENJOYED A SINGULAR EDUCATION THAT DIVORCES THEM FROM THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT WITH MANY SEEMINGLY INTENT ON REMOVING ANYTHING NOT IDENTIFIABLE AS CONSTRUCTION FROM THEIR CONTRACTS In our experience, we find quantity surveyors poorly informed about landscape pricing either through lack of interest or lack of education. Instead of simply pricing and quantifying they often question the need for planting or for higher quality materials. This generally comes after extensive negotiations with the client and starts to undermine their decision making. We have 18

A QUESTION OF
QUANTITY & QUALITY a suspicion that they are secretly on the side of architects, who then ring fence any savings for their gain. As part of this process, the QS often insists on separating the hard and soft landscape elements. The hard elements or build are relocated into the main or architectural contract leaving the smaller, less costly soft landscape works to go to the landscaper, working as a subcontractor. Whilst there are probably several gains for the main contractor and client in this event, the landscape designer, landscaper and ultimately, the client also stand to lose out. The allocation of a smaller overall contract can mean that it is more difficult to attract the contractor of choice, with quality suffering as a result. Perhaps more disappointing is the appointment of the main building contractor as hard landscaper. This situation is rarely effective, with most building contractors clueless as to how external landscape in all its forms actually works. We are also faced with monitoring two contractors on site, often leading to an increased number of visits and more complex lines of communication. If we find ourselves in this position we always ask to see examples of landscape work executed by the building contractor as we are in search of quality on behalf of our clients. Some building contractors show themselves
1 In this recently completed commercial project delivered with Kings Landscapes, the soft and hard elements contribute in equal measure to the success of the scheme.
capable at this point – others fall by the wayside and we return to a full landscape contract. I’d like to appeal for more David Braithwaites in the QS world please – people who can appreciate the value and quality of a well executed landscape or garden in all aspects but also people who understand the difficulties of splitting contracts, often unnecessarily. Making a living as a landscape designer is hard enough without someone who should know better making it worse. I call upon quantity surveyors everywhere to explain and defend themselves in response to the above and for those regularly or solely involved in landscape works to share their knowledge and approach across the discipline. I look forward to the responses!

ARE THERE BENEFITS TO
PAYING A BONUS? Yes there are, says David Dodd. And if you can pay your staff bonuses with a smile on your face, you might even see a return on your investment. Here he explains why... The Outdoor Room’s financial year ends in November. This suits me as I don’t have all the usual accountants’ questions fired at me just as the April tax year starts and we’re getting ‘silly busy’. It also means that with our new financial year starting in December I can look back over the past year to see how well we’ve done and whether or not the staff deserve a bonus! There you go, I’ve said it. BONUS! A lovely word to the staff, but a less palatable one to employers. So how much do the staff deserve, if anything? For every reason there is to give a bonus, there is always a counter reason why not to. For example: There’s money in the bank… but now it’s winter and everything slows down, so we might need that money to see us through. We won a BALI award and an RHS medal… but we didn’t make
that much money on those particular gardens. We’ve finished every job this year on time… but three of the vans need replacing and our rent’s going up next year. I could go on, but you get my point.
IT’S A WAY OF SHOWING HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE STAFF, AND IF THEY FEEL APPRECIATED THEY’LL HOPEFULLY HAVE THE INCENTIVE TO WORK HARDER Should everyone get the same amount? My answer is no. Managers and foremen take the responsibility and stress for projects being finished on time and to a high standard, so in my opinion they deserve more. Skilled workers get bonuses based on quality and productivity of work and trainees based on learning and skill sets achieved and whether or not they’ve grafted hard over the year. The first bonus I ever paid was when The Outdoor Room was a one man band (me) plus a labourer. I took him out for a few pints and a curry and handed him a Christmas card with £40 in it. He was over the moon! This year, that figure will be nearer £30,000, but obviously split between a few more people. So, what’s in this for me? Two things: firstly, I have a firm belief that if we’ve had a good year a chunk of the profit should be shared with all who helped achieve it. Secondly, it’s a way of showing how much I appreciate the staff, and if they feel appreciated they’ll hopefully
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
David Dodd.indd 19
have the incentive to work harder. When I’m calculating how much to pay, firstly I look at how much I can afford as a lump sum. This may be a few hundred pounds or tens of thousands. Once I have this figure, I then need to decide how it is going to be divided up. I look at productivity of sites and who worked where and did what. I also consider length of service to the company, as I wouldn’t pay someone who’s been with me a few months the same as someone who’s served ten years. Make sure the staff know that a bonus is a privilege and not a right, and that it could vary dramatically from one year to the next, and that’s if they get one at all. Tell them they shouldn’t be looking in the Ferrari showroom too closely as they may be disappointed… after all, we’re not city bankers (thankfully)!
YOU MAY SEE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY INCREASE WITH HAPPIER STAFF With the above points in mind, my advice to employers is consider paying a bonus with a glad heart. Include a note with it saying ‘thank you’ and you never know, you may just start to see your productivity increase with happier staff. ABOUT DAVID DODD David Dodd has been in the landscape industry since the age of 17. After having studied and then taught at Merrist Wood College, he set up The Outdoor Room in 1995. In 2013, he went into business with Landscape Architect, Joe Perkins to form Longview Design Ltd. David has also lectured in design and construction for over 20 years.

THOUGHTS FROM THE
CONTINENT Angus Lindsay takes a look at what kit is available across the channel. Are the specialised machines used here the best solution or would base prime movers be the way forward? Last month I (along with several thousand others) was lucky enough to spend a day wandering around a wet and windswept former Luftwaffe airfield in central Germany at the Demopark exhibition, a showcase for the latest in amenity, landscaping and golf management machinery. To say things are different on the continent is an understatement; they certainly lead the way in bespoke tool carriers and flail based collection technology and are not afraid to do things a bit differently.
You’ve got to clean them somehow and it beats a bucket and mop!
What struck me most was the large number of people attending despite the blustery conditions; their enthusiasm for what they do; the products they use and the inventiveness of the manufacturers. Where else could you see a tractor-mounted solar panel cleaning brush flanked by a pedestrian side-arm flail and a six-wheel drive robotic banks mower? Moving around the site it becomes apparent that we in Britain are very much a niche market with our requirements for cylinder machines and bespoke single task machines. On mainland Europe it’s the norm to start with a base prime mover – be it a tractor or a tool carrier, using either three point linkages or front mounted DIN www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Angus Lindsay TW.indd 21
plates – and attach all manner of implements to it. Front linkages are commonplace in agriculture but DIN mountings are only really used on HGVs for mounting snowploughs, though Unimog have exploited this fixing for a spectacular variety of applications. This is where our continental cousins have a bit of an advantage over us in that they can make better use of their prime movers year round with amenity and landscaping tasks from March to October then winter maintenance operations over the remainder of the year. So should we be thinking more like this and embracing some of these technologies? Personally, I think there are advantages but let’s not get carried away. There are several hurdles not least of which are space, budget and legislation. Much of the equipment I saw works well because verges are wider, roads are not as busy and landscapes are designed with maintenance regimes built in. You also have to remember that with greater restrictions on when work can be done, much of what I have seen has been developed out of necessity – and people are prepared to pay for that. On the plus side, the equipment is already available, tried and tested. Changing people’s ideas and attitudes will be more of a challenge, not just for those who operate the equipment but those who specify/purchase and even clients who may not embrace such radical change. I say ‘radical’ but is it? Surely making the best possible use of your prime movers and
Pedestrian side arm flail – not for the faint hearted
those who operate them makes economic sense even if the initial outlay makes your eyes water. Take for example the ride-on wide area mower or ‘batwing’ as it is affectionately known. In the hands of a good operator this is a highly productive mowing machine equally at home on verges as it is in parks, housing and on sports fields. But what else can it do? When you’re paying over £40k for this type of machine you want it to be earning its money all the year round.
Is this over the top for UK operations?
I’m not advocating that we immediately change practices, just that we open our minds and look outside the box to explore what else is available. It may not be suitable but it doesn’t hurt to look elsewhere and ask yourself: “How else could I do the job and is there anything out there worth pursuing.” ABOUT ANGUS LINDSAY As an agriculturist, Angus spent several years working on arable farms in Scotland before joining VSO in Egypt, implementing a mechanisation programme, managing field operations for a commercial cotton plantation in Nigeria and as a contract instructor for Massey Ferguson in Yemen. During this time he also spent a year at Silsoe, gaining an MSc in agricultural engineering and mechanisation management. Returning to the UK he joined Glendale as machinery manager in 1994 – going on to become company engineer – before joining The Landscape Group in 2009 as group head of assets and fleet. Contact

UP AND AWAY Landscape Architect Adam White looks at the benefits of rooftop gardens in urban areas and reviews his Lyric Theatre Roof Garden in London, now listed in Elle Decor’s World’s Top Ten Most Enchanting Gardens There are many benefits of a rooftop garden beyond the fact that they can be quiet retreats. They add another dimension of green space to an urbanscape without taking an extensive area of land in densely populated area. In some European countries such as Switzerland, bylaws have been passed stipulating that new buildings must relocate the greenspace covered by the development to their roofs. Existing buildings must also comply with the bylaw by greening at least 20% of their rooftops. Here at Davies White Landscape Architects we designed and managed the creation of the rooftop garden at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London. The project went on to win a Landscape Institute Design Award and a BALI Construction Award and has become the blueprint for sustainable roof gardens in the UK. Adding a rooftop garden need not be extravagant and complicated. It is relatively simple and can greatly benefit our urban areas.
Here are some examples of the advantages of rooftop gardens: ● Green roofs can help in the absorption of carbon dioxide and help reduce air pollution. ● Storm water run-off, flooding and water pollution can be reduced. ● The building and surrounding area’s aesthetics will be enhanced and property values could be increased. ● Economically, there are no additional
land costs. ● Temperatures around the building can be
lowered in the summer. ● Buildings are further insulated from the cold
in the winter. ● The roof’s life can be extended by protecting it
from the elements. ● Heating and cooling bills will be reduced. ● The rooftop garden space can be used for
food production. There are two types of rooftop gardens and depending on the structural design of your roof, one may be preferable to the other. One is the extensive rooftop garden, which is often inaccessible and the other is the intensive rooftop garden, which is accessible to people. The intensive roof garden at the Lyric, Hammersmith is a green oasis in a heavily built-up part of London. The design includes
lighting, sustainable timber decking, low planters, seating, shrubs and trees. The garden also boasts a bespoke 6m high pergola canopy visible from Hammersmith tube station. Planting was completed with support from local school, Marks and Spencer and the Green Team from Groundwork, the environmental charity that helps the long-term unemployed learn horticultural skills. Residents from the nearby Ashcroft Square Estate were appointed ‘Garden Guardians’, providing hands-on help to keep it in tip-top condition. The roof garden was funded by the theatre, local businesses and Marks and Spencer. Jessica Hepburn, executive director of the Lyric, said: “It has been fantastic to work with such inspirational designers to transform our outdoor terrace into an iconic, oxygen-giving sea of green in the concrete jungle of central Hammersmith.” Ecologically, roof gardens are a valuable asset in urban areas. The Lyric roof garden absorbs up to 75 per cent of rainwater. Water that falls under the decking is collected and then runs into the raised planting containers. Through transpiration the plants help to cool the air, thus lowering temperatures over the surface of the terrace. The garden is a popular place and is enjoyed by many – actors preparing for a performance, children on school outings, local shoppers, residents and office workers. It is a step in the right direction towards greening our urban areas and addressing the effects of high-density development in many of our cities.

EYES DOWN, TAPE MEASURES IN HAND, IT’S THE
WORLDSKILLS SEMI-FINALS! Jody Lidgard reports back from this year’s WorldSkills UK semi-finals at RHS Tatton Park, and looks at the lessons we can take away from the competition As you read this article we will have completed the WorldSkills UK semi-finals competition at RHS Tatton Park. Marks will dictate who has made the grade for the final, which will take place at the NEC in November at The Skills Show. This year we broke with tradition and I had our own apprentice construct the competition’s garden test piece. This gave us an opportunity to recognise any snags that might occur between the planning stage and the actual build on site. One or two features needed minor tweaks to make them achievable within the time frame of the competition. The other invaluable lesson we learned from this exercise was whether the test piece was realistic and measured for competitors. Jacob, who is our new apprentice, certainly didn’t have it all his own way, and was challenged in both hard and soft landscaping. He completed the piece and admitted afterwards that he had enjoyed the task, despite the constant stream of banter directed at him from the rest of the team. Year on year, the standard of competitor is rising. Colleges’ awareness of the competition still
needs improvement, however. Colleges, if you’re reading this article, it’s not rocket science, but it does require a modicum of adaptation to make it fit into the curriculum. I’ve been impressed with the response from the industry this year, largely thanks to the hard work of Phil Treymane from the APL, who has been pivotal in getting the upskilling message out there into the workplace. Again, a word to employers, investment in your staff member is key to the process, yes you will need to release them to compete, but with a little lateral thinking this is not insurmountable. I have seen a real difference between the academic and industry competitors’ approaches this year. Competitors still in education are more
I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET THE BALANCE RIGHT WHEN WE’RE APPROACHING CPD AND TRAINING WITHIN OUR BUSINESSES used to working in a closed environment under the scrutiny of instructors or judges. Some of the industry candidates not used to this type of pressure struggled working under such conditions. On the flip side the pace and approach of the industry guys was a notch or two above that of the college learners, who hadn’t had to work in a pressured environment with time constraints and therefore didn’t keep up the pace throughout the competition. I think it’s important to get the balance right when we’re approaching CPD and training within our businesses. We have been discussing this whilst planning our first master classes. The blend between fast-paced, practical application, tempered and underpinned by a ‘drop in’ style of theory sessions, is the way we see things coming together. The Landscape Skills Academy, in partnership with the APL and sponsored by Marshalls and Makita, will be demonstrating just that, using the WorldSkills ethos of training and
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Jody Lidgard.indd 25
excellence to deliver timed and measured week-long boot camps to bolster and improve employer and employee performance for the industry. Speaking to the APL team, we see this style of training being open not only to members of professional bodies and affiliated approved registered companies and individuals, but also to the wider industry in general. Our first course will be on paving and horizontal surfaces held in October. The course will be residential and hosted at a facility near Hinckley. We plan to host 16 delegates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Subsequent courses will be run throughout winter and spring. Further details will be available over the coming weeks, in the meantime it would be great to hear any thoughts around the issue. The international team will by now have returned from Brazil having competed against 20 other nations to be ranked best in the world. Our next article will look at their journey and how they fared in South America.

GIVE ME A BREAK! Want to be master of your time rather than being a slave to it? Increasing productivity is all about the rhythm, says Steve Clarke Here’s a question for you. What is one denominator you can think of that is common to all mankind? What do all human beings have in common? You can probably think of a few things if you put your mind to it.

WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE THEN IS NOT AN ACT, BUT A HABIT ARISTOTLE
Here’s one to consider... Irrespective of your age, sex, colour or creed; irrespective of your social standing, the job you do or anything else – we all have only 24 hours in a day. We are all given the same time, just 1,440 minutes in every day. So how is it some people get so much more done in their day than others? I’ve always been fascinated by this. It turns out there’s a science behind it. What do others, perhaps you, do that leaves them feeling drained, stressed and believing there’s never enough time in the day to get stuff done. What is it that all too often creates this sense of overwhelming frustration? Does this strike a chord with you? If not you, it will with some people who work for you so please read on. Do you work as well with your clients or colleagues consistently throughout the day? Do you think as clearly and creatively all day and produce a consistent quality of work, or have you noticed peaks and troughs? This inconsistency exists because human beings are not wired to operate like computers. We all have ups and downs during our day. It’s normal. The question is, how could understanding and harnessing this 26

So here’s what I’ve discovered through doing some research In 1963, a leading pioneer in sleep research by the name of Nathaniel Kleitman discovered something he called the basic rest-activity cycle – the 90 minute periods at night during which we move progressively through five stages of sleep, from light to deep, and then out again. You may have heard of REM sleep. This is the third stage – periods of deep rejuvenating sleep. Although it is less well known, Kleitman also noticed that our bodies operate by the same 90 minute rhythm during the day. When we’re awake, the movement is from higher to lower alertness. This is called this our ultradian performance rhythm. When we need a rest, our bodies sends us clear signals such as fatigue, hunger, drowsiness, loss of focus and the fidgets. But mostly, we override them – drink coffee, eat chocolate or energy bars and plough on regardless. There’s a better way – a far more effective way to get more done and not feel stressed. Get ‘chunky’. By this I mean work in
90 minute chunks. Then rest for 20 and repeat. You might remember it like this: “Work at the peak, rest in the valley.” If you want to see some massive results in the growth and profitability of your business, how about this? Make a commitment. Commit to what I call a ‘power hour plus’. Not all day, just select your 90 consecutive minutes and commit to working on business growth ideas and nothing else in that solid 90 minutes – your power hour plus. Find the time of day that suits you best, create the right environment, switch off phones and don’t even think about looking at email or Facebook! You are uninterruptible by anyone for any reason for 90 minutes. For me it’s usually 6-7.30am. During that time I commit my time and energy solely to focused business growth work. Working on my business, not in it – activity that will get new clients or keep existing ones happy. No distractions, no excuses. This is one secret successful people in business apply consistently to get more productive time in their day and to achieve incredible results. You can too. Try this for a month, 90 minutes a day. Create a new habit – the results are excellent. ABOUT STEVE CLARKE An exceptional sales mentor and sought after motivational business speaker who draws upon his own first hand experiences. POWER PLAY Why low voltage is the right voltage when it comes to outdoor lighting
Do you know your RCD from your IP rating? Robert Webber explains the rules of the game when installing external lighting – why you need to get the voltage right first time It’s been another busy week. My team and I have spent most of it carrying out maintenance work on garden lighting installations carried out by other installers. It still amazes me that many installers have no concept of a durable system for all seasons. Designers and landscapers need to insist on low voltage lighting. If your installer can’t offer a solution, call us! All electrical installation work carried out in the garden is subject to both BS7671 (known to installers as ‘the regs’) and also Part P of the building regulations. This helps set a basic standard for installation works. All works need to be certificated by the installer to state complicity
WP Junction Box With Armoured Gland Pack
with the current regulations. However, the regs are just rules for us; they don’t offer much advice on the best type of lights to use – when to use mains voltage and when to use low voltage lighting. This is predominantly left to the installer, except where swimming pools and water features are concerned. The most basic rule of any garden lighting system is that it should be RCD protected. An RCD (Residual Current Device) is one that can switch off the power supply to a circuit within four tenths of a second if it detects a fault. The RCD only monitors the mains voltage side of the installation however, normally from the switches to the transformer. After the transformer the circuit is low voltage (normally 12V). The RCD is looking for any fault on the mains voltage side. In a 240V garden lighting system, the RCD monitors all the way up to and including the lamp, which sounds good at first. Most garden lights are subject to a small amount of moisture Note: 20mm Holes to be cut in PVC Enclosure to take LV Cable Glands

inside. When you have a hot lamp in an enclosed space outside, moisture in the warm air condenses when it hits the cold fitting. Rightly, if this happens the RCD will trip and turn the whole installation off. This complies with all regulations, but is a nuisance to the user. Then they need either to get their hands dirty and find the issue or call us. This week we have had four days of maintaining mains voltage systems. Slightly boring for me and my guys and costly for clients who have paid others for a solution to lighting their garden. They should have fitted low voltage first time.
My way or the highway This week I’ve had to say “no thanks” to two garden designers who insisted on using 240V spike lights in a garden they had designed. This was because they had purchased the lights themselves without much knowledge of their suitability for the site. I explained the drawbacks of mains voltage lighting and why installing a light with a rating of IP44 in a shady woodland area with little direct sunlight would be a very bad idea. IP refers to Ingress Protection; it’s a scale that tells a purchaser how durable a light is in regard to external influences (such as moisture). We very rarely fit a light with a rating below IP65. It’s a shame when designers don’t trust 20 years of installation experience. I’m sure they will have a great relationship with their chosen installer; as they will be spending rather a lot of time together in the future maintaining those lights. ABOUT ROBERT WEBBER

MAKING YOUR VECTORWORKS MODEL
LOOK GREAT
Hints and tips for Vectorworks users
Vectorworks is a powerful tool combining both 2D and 3D with a powerful rendering engine – Renderworks. In this article, Tamsin Slatter reveals some of the tricks you can employ to take your 3D model from looking good to looking great
Explore the range of textures available Often, our customers start to apply Renderworks textures using only the ‘Default Content’ that comes with the rendering engine. This is the list that’s displayed when you click the texture pop-up menu on the Object Info palette. But there are many more textures available and, if you’re a Vectorworks Service Select member, even more in the portal. Use the Resource Browser to add these files as favourites and they will be accessible to browse while working on any project. Below: A selection of the additional resources available to Vectorworks Service Select members, and the Resource Browser palette for making favourite resources easily accessible
Shader Name
Purpose
Colour
Determines the base colour for the texture. This could be a plain colour, an image, one of the built-in patterns such as bricks, or a range of ‘noise’ patterns for more irregular surfaces.
Reflectivity
Determine how light is reflected from the surface of the te ture. Click options to try out some of the alternatives. For example, you may want a mirror-like reflection or perhaps something more like a brushed metal surface. ou can also add blurriness to your reflections.
Transparency
Determines how light passes through an object. There is a variety of options available, including different patterns.
Bump
Creates the appearance of an uneven surface on a flat image. If the texture’s colour is image-based, the bump shader can use the same image and analyse its light and shade to bring colours forward and have others recede. Bump can also include ‘displacement mapping’, which is great for representing grass.
Above: Table describing the purpose of each of the shaders within the Renderworks texture editor

Learn to edit textures and make them sing! Now that you’ve found the textures, it’s time to conquer your fear of the texture editor. The difference between a Renderworks texture and a simple image is that the texture contains settings to enable it to reflect light, allow light to pass through and to appear as an uneven surface. Be brave – edit the textures that come with Renderworks and experiment with some of the settings. It’s good to have something reflective in a scene and the appearance of a bumpy surface adds a touch of reality. Once the texture has been applied to an object, locate the texture on the Resource Browser, right-click and choose Edit. Use the Edit Texture dialogue to make changes. The preview object can be changed (I prefer a sphere as it gives a good indication of the lit surface) and you should set the size of the preview so that you can view the texture at a reasonable size. Each shader, has a purpose – just click Edit to explore them in more detail. If you have other images of materials, you can use them to create your own textures from scratch, using the same Edit Texture dialogue.

Image rendered without light and shade
Add light sources and use Renderworks styles Adding realistic textures is not enough. To make a model look fantastic it needs light and shade. For exterior scenes, the best way to add light is to use the Heliodon tool, found in the Visualization toolset. Its settings include the location of the site together with the date and time so it will produce accurate shadows. You can view the shadows in Open render mode, but they ll always look better if you render with a Renderworks mode. Renderworks includes a range of built-in styles, which include options for bouncing light around the model from a sky background to mimic how light behaves in the real world. This adds both brightness and softness to the scene. It s even possible to remove the colour from a render while leaving the other settings intact. This model was originally created by one of our landscape trainers, Kate Pearson. Here, I ve created some different effects using simple changes to the Renderworks settings.
Image rendered with a light source and Renderworks style
Present on a sheet layer to combine rendering modes If you render on a design layer, you not only tie up ectorworks while it s rendering, but you also can t produce multiple views simultaneously. se Renderworks Cameras in the scene to set up the views you want and then create viewports of each of these views. They can all sit on the same sheet layer, but each viewport can have independent render settings and lighting options. You can set up all the render styles, apply them to the viewports and then go to lunch!
Render in the cloud If you have other projects to work on and don t want to tie up Vectorworks while you wait for renders to complete, cloud rendering is an option. Vectorworks Service Select members can install Vectorworks Cloud Services on their desktop computer and Vectorworks Nomad on a tablet computer (available as an Apple or Android Vectorworks Cloud Services and Vectorworks Nomad Viewer app). Files placed in the with the 3D model available to navigate Vectorworks Cloud Services folder will upload to the cloud and render there, with the finished sheet layers available to view on an iPad, or the 3D model available to explore.

INTERVIEW
Let’s Hear it From
DAVID BURDICK OF COUNTY GROUNDS MAINTENANCE Pro Landscaper spoke to David Burdick of County Grounds Maintenance in Exeter, Devon, about the company’s workforce, contracts and procedures David, what was your route into the landscaping industry? I previously worked at a local estate agency driving around and putting the for sale boards up and this developed into a 22-year career, which gave me a wealth of business experience and people skills. After I was made redundant I helped a friend move slabs and mix cement on a landscaping job. With his landscaping skills and my contacts I thought we could create a business, so eight or nine years ago we set up County Grounds Maintenance. We bought a van and were very focused on image – we didn’t want the white van man look. www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Let's Hear it From.indd 33
WE ARE MAINTAINING THE SHOP WINDOW FOR BUSINESSES WHERE THE CONDITION OF THEIR GARDENS OR GROUNDS GIVES A VITAL FIRST IMPRESSION TO CLIENTS Instead we aimed to maintain blue chip sites with shiny kit and uniforms to look the part. I got in touch with my property contacts and we were fortunate to pick up some maintenance
contracts fairly quickly. We’ve been very successful winning some excellent contracts because we have a good working relationship with clients. We now employ 15 people and have several teams out on the road. What is the breakdown of your business and what is the most significant aspect? I would say 95% commercial and 5% domestic with core grounds maintenance by far the most significant. We are maintaining the shop window for businesses where the condition of their gardens or grounds gives a vital first impression to clients. Pro Landscaper / August 2015 33

INTERVIEW
Can you describe your routine and that of your company? I usually meet with our team leaders and foremen first thing. I have a chat, check we’re on schedule and make sure everything is okay. I may get the odd call during the day but the team are very capable. I then come to the office, deal with any issues, then when the weather is nice I find an opportunity to get out on the tools because that’s what I set the business up for in the first place. As far as the company’s concerned, we look after a variety of sites including schools, sports pitches, office blocks, show houses, sales offices, private client landscaping and paddock maintenance.
WE ARE FORTUNATE THAT OUR CORE TEAM HAS BEEN WITH US A WHILE NOW AND HAS VERY HIGH STANDARDS A typical day would be 6am through to 2pm. The litter pickers go out at 6am to clear the retail sites ready for the day ahead. We are litter picking seven days a week which can be time consuming but is a constant issue. We cut the grass every two weeks through the growing season and maintain beds, borders, hedges and shrubs. 34
Pro Landscaper / August 2015
Let's Hear it From.indd 34
In winter we provide gritting on a number of contracts for sites across Exeter and Plymouth, but it is obviously weather dependent so we can be busy one year and quiet the next. Last winter was average, the year before we only gritted one night and three years ago we gritted for 38 nights. We have invested in these contracts over the past five winters and use our own kit. After a quiet season the plus side is that the van and staff are in place and we can carry the grit over to the following year, so we treat it as a bonus if there is gritting business at that time of year. How do you monitor ongoing jobs? We are fortunate that our core team has been with us a while now and has very high standards. We have a foreman and a business manager in the field and we meet regularly to discuss expectations. A lot of our clients check the sites themselves. We are lucky to receive a lot of positive feedback and if it is an owner-occupied site we are in constant contact. If one of our team finds a problem they follow a simple procedure, photographing it and sending it to me. Then I have a look and send a report to the client within the hour. It’s easy to become complacent when things are going well with a client and it’s really important that we are in contact every month or two. It’s also crucial to have confidence in my staff’s communication skills because at some stage they are going to have to meet clients. Which are your longest serving and most rewarding contracts? Exeter Cathedral Green is a very high-profile contract we’ve maintained now for two years. It’s popular among our teams and the guys enjoy positive feedback from the public. A contract with a local solicitors which has fantastic grounds is one of our most enjoyable because we get considerable recognition for looking after that particular site eight years on. How do you tender for new business? We keep an eye out for opportunities, mainly through BALI online and in publications. However we don’t pay to join tender websites. I think many of the problems with tender www.prolandscapermagazine.com
21/07/2015 16:18
INTERVIEW
WE CAN BE FLEXIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO TWEAKING CONTRACTS TO ADAPT TO THE CLIENT’S NEEDS AND THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT processes are down to them being too onerous. To be able to tender in the first place you have to be an approved safe contractor, be registered with BALI or have some other affiliation and so you do end up joining multiple schemes. When completing a tender, we find we are often supplying all or much of the same information we have already furnished one of the approved health and safety assessment schemes with (such as safe contractor, which has approved us to be able to tender in the first instance), therefore doubling up on paperwork. Tenders have become massively admin heavy, so when tender packages arrive on our doorstep we sometimes question whether the process is worth it. Do you normally win on price? Often we are one of the more expensive firms and ask the client to give us three months to prove why. By far, more often than not, we retain the clients. A lot of contracts are price driven but there are several where we have been approached on reputation alone. How flexible can you be when it comes to contracts? Completely. Ongoing maintenance contracts have been agreed but there are always things that will change in the course of the year. We can be flexible when it comes to tweaking contracts to adapt to the client’s needs and that’s very important. We agree a rate for a 12-month period, paid in 12 installments, and that gives us regular cash flow. Tell us about your workforce. We recently hired our sixteenth staff member and are looking at taking on another soon. We had a couple of years where we regrouped but have now taken the decision www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Let's Hear it From.indd 35
to move forward. We have our culture in place and will operate under the same philosophy whether we are five guys or 50. We’ve got two 18-year-old apprentices, one just about to finish his first year, the other his second. We are now looking to start another. Our apprentices combine their work here with training at the local Bicton Agricultural and Horticultural College, which has worked really well. Both have become a real asset to the business and will be offered full-time jobs at the end of their apprenticeships. Although the recommended rate of pay for apprentices is poor, we offer ours more money because they are worth it. How did you come to be based at Darts Farm shopping village? A family I used to play rugby with owned a big business close to the motorway, with easy parking and plenty of facilities. It was ideal geographically so I asked if they had any spare office space. The complex provides a great networking environment with a large number of local businessmen and surveyors arriving for coffees, meetings and chats. Everyone in the area knows Darts Farm. Finally, what hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time? I enjoy cycling, kite surfing and going away skiing – I like to keep as active as possible! We have horses at home and have fun spending time out on the water in my boat.

he brief was to improve the gardens around the house, incorporating a swimming pool and garden room. The garden room was to be used for changing and showering, socialising, displaying their son’s art and listening to music. Although the house is traditional they had a contemporary extension built with bi-fold doors and the gardens were designed to be sympathetic to this. Design and build ● Starting at the entrance, new stylish
automated gates were designed which were sympathetic to the detail in the front door and a pedestrian gate in the same style replaced an old metal gate opposite the front door. ● The driveway was increased in size to accommodate the clients’ cars and provide better manoeuvrability. The drive was constructed using Cotswold gravel with the existing granite setts re-used to edge the drive. ● New steps and planting together with a pair of pots on either side of the front door draws visitors to the entrance and improved the approach. ● Separating the front from the back garden and linking the garage to the house, the existing Beech hedge was extended which also screened the cars from the back garden.

● The key element in the back garden was the
swimming pool. This was installed in a sunny part of the garden using a black liner to provide reflection and a more natural look. An automatic pool cover was installed. As the swimming pool was located in a higher part of the garden, less screening was needed. Areas of grey natural stone with Cedar decking to match the pool building were designed for lounging and access. ● Matching gravel paths give access around the house with stone terrace areas providing areas for dining and sitting. The terraces were softened with low planting so as not to block the views and to add colour and scent, with a selection of herbs provided for cooking and to complement drinks. ● A semi-circular Beech hedge gives structure and mystery to the garden with long grass and wildflowers surrounding a beautiful Mulberry tree. ● Locations for the clients’ sculptures and a bench were carefully considered with lighting to emphasise them at night. ● A vegetable garden, compost bins and a shed were created out of site behind the hedges. ● Wherever possible, materials were reused on site such as the turf, topsoil from excavations, granite setts, old bases, paving and compostable material in the planting borders. Overall a very attractive garden was created within a year of implementation which harmonised with its surroundings. 38

Sunderland City Council’s in-house Planning Implementation and Landscape Architects teams were tasked with breathing new life into the resorts, and the project identified Seaburn Promenade and Roker Marine Walk as priorities for investment. Both sites represented the focal points of each resort, from where views of the two stunning sandy beaches of Whitburn Bay and Roker Sands can be enjoyed. However, these areas were also particularly symbolic of the areas’ decline, displaying evidence of wear and tear, crumbling public areas and poor access. Works were carried out over two phases at both Marine Walk and Seaburn Promenade, with completion of the second phases in early 2014. Design and outcome Designing a seafront is a challenge in its own right, so the task of redesigning two distinctly unique stretches of Sunderland’s coastline simultaneously and delivering a coherent style seemed a daunting task. Drawing upon local knowledge, childhood experiences and consultation responses, the council’s in-house architectural landscape team had a clear vision to create an organic coastal experience that would work with the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

existing spaces, drawing inspiration from the unique topography, geology, panoramic views and nature. Sustainability was at the heart of the project, and the early involvement of artists, street artists and craftsmen working with the architects at the sketch stage helped subtly integrate new and existing features, delivering a unique take on the natural and cultural heritage of the promenades.
Materials and planting The formerly bleak and harsh environment at both Seaburn and Roker was addressed with robust natural materials and forms, with a strong emphasis on new areas of soft landscaping using plant species suited to the harsh coastal landscape. The planting was designed to reflect random outcrops of coastal planting battered by the elements. Native and ornamental grasses were mixed with herbaceous perennials adding vibrant colours throughout the year. No two planting beds are the same, creating something different
at every point of the journey. This also allows flexibility when maintaining the beds – when plants need to be divided and moved, the beds will evolve into different mixes over time. The projects incorporated new and recycled stone materials mixed with clay blocks and resin gravel to add texture and contrast, and to aid visually impaired users. Local materials reclaimed from site, such as driftwood washed down the River Wear, were used within planting beds to introduce obscure natural forms that contrasted with the naturalistic planting. Local cannonball limestone was reclaimed from the site and reused in the main features, such as the walling, bespoke railings and handrails at Seaburn. Fixtures Multipurpose viewing platforms and steps at Seaburn Promenade and street furniture at Roker work as pleasing sea defences integrated into the landscape, as opposed to over engineered and unsightly sea wall solutions. 1 Eryngium agavifolium seed heads give Autumn interest 2 Neptea ‘Six Hills Giant’ provide early season colour 3 Carved Boulder seating by The Stone Chef 4 Wave railing at Seaburn with distant view of Roker Pier 5 Concrete wave seating and hardwood picnic table 6 Seaside planting and form 7 Vibrant colours of Kniphofia and Perovskia 8 C2C end point sculpture and new hard landscaping 9 Cafe pod Pro Landscaper / August 2015 41

the site, improving security and safety for the public and enabling use of the space into the evening and during early morning for activities such as the Sunderland Illuminations. This won the Local Government News Award for public lighting in 2012. Accessibility improvements at Seaburn and Marine Walk were introduced to ensure the seafront could be enjoyed by all. Areas of high kerbs were replaced with flush interfaces, connecting existing pathways directly to the promenade or beach viewing platforms. The project demonstrates a commitment to good quality design and this has delivered responses to the environment, addressing key site issues in imaginative ways and establishing a sense of place previously lacking at both Seaburn and Roker. Challenges The project team did encounter challenges during the project. This included ensuring that local businesses could stay open while works
were on site as well as managing the timing of works around the north east’s harsh coastal weather and the peak summer season, when the seafront hosts major events and increased visitor numbers. Landscape architect Philip Dorian said: “The fact that we achieved this with a planning and design team based entirely in-house is something we are extremely proud of.’’ The projects have encouraged private sector activity in the area, with a new cafe and residential development recently completed at Roker Marine Walk and a restaurant development on site at Seaburn Promenade.

hen the clients bought Stour house, the land directly surrounding the property was rather bleak and uninviting, with very little to soften the rigid exterior. The client wanted to create flow around the front of the house, leading the eye to the existing Palm House, which was also refurbished as part of the overall brief. Due to the contours of the site, the existing terrace lent itself beautifully to incorporating sweeping steps, which would wrap themselves around the house and terrace. During the design process, it was decided that the shapes created would look stunning in combination with the movement and flow of water. The clients loved the idea and thus a water feature was included in the original plan. The client knew from the start that he wanted a completely bespoke standout feature knitted into the fabric of the building itself. In-house designer Angela Hart created the water feature with this in mind and proposed that it should be built as an extension to the existing red brick wall of the sun terrace.

The materials used were selected with the utmost care and attention to blend with the age of the house itself, while also giving the water feature a sharp, contemporary presence against the building. Different types of sandstone paving were used on the terraces, paired with Suffolk white bricks. The water feature pool was built using Leca blocks and fibreglass, lined to make it watertight. The outside of the pool wall, which sits directly next to the sweeping walkway, was finished in red brick and capped with coping stones from Haddonstone. This kept the look as clean and crisp as possible next to the Yorkstone paving. To give the feature a traditional, pastoral twist, a copper bowl was designed and commissioned by a local company, RH Barrel and Son. They created a stunning, quarter circle bowl in copper, incorporating a deep lip so the water would cascade over into the pool below.

Challenges Installation of the water feature took two months, including rebuilding the existing wall behind the feature and laying the electrics. When finished the water feature measured 10m in diameter. Due to the size and volume of water required, the feature was linked to a newly drilled borehole which now feeds Stour house its own water supply. While this created some challenges, the outcome was that the water feature has a continuous supply of fresh water, keeping it clean and reducing the risk of water evaporation and algae build up during the summer months. 46

or over 100 years South Marine Park has been a place for walking, relaxing and socialising and is a popular destination for tourists and the community alike. It boasts two children’s play areas – one of which is home to a giant sandpit full of diggers and running water wheels. A firm favourite with all ages is the boating lake, which is designated as a local wildlife site. As well as enjoying a leisurely row or pedal around the lake, visitors can get up close to a huge number of swans, tufted ducks, pochard and geese who have made the park their home. A miniature steam railway operates throughout the main season, and visitors can follow a new art trail featuring ten sculptures reflecting the heritage and natural environment of the park. In 2008 the park underwent major restoration work, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and South Tyneside Council to return it to its original Victorian splendour. Works included repair of the terrace and restoration of the stonework; the return of the bandstand to an exact replica of the original model; new layout and pathways, planting and a restored waterfall. Awards South Marine Park, a popular heritage park, has won the prestigious Green Flag Award each year since 2009/10. Keeping it looking its best is a joint effort between South Tyneside Council and ISS and local volunteers from the Friends of North and South Marine Park. 1 The wildlife enjoying the boating lake 2 Thousands visit the park each summer

Staff The services to South Marine Park are delivered by ISS’s grass cutting and shrub maintenance teams. Thomas Cunniff, who heads the shrub maintenance was recently presented with a GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Award for his efforts in keeping South Marine Park looking its best, for his work ethic and standards set. ISS strongly believes its staff are at the heart of its success and South Tyneside retains a high number of original key staff, ensuring stability, continuity and a wealth of contract and local knowledge. The majority of South Tyneside staff reside within the borough, and all receive on-going technical, practical and managerial training to progress their development and ensure they deliver a high quality service. They also receive customer facing training, a critical skill for such a high usage park.
wildlife and flora to the park. Due to the high horticultural element of the shrub beds within the park, most pruning is carried out by hand, enabling ISS gardeners to selectively remove dead and diseased branching, which promotes better plant health and more substantial bloom periods. The summer bedding displays are strictly planted to embody the original planting introduced by the then head gardener, John Peebles, in 1886, although some changes have occurred to encompass newer more sustainable material. The winter months see a much scaled-down maintenance regime.
Maintenance Grass cutting is carried out to a frequency specification, and is generally cut fortnightly during the season with cuttings left on site. Cuttings falling onto the hard surfaces are blown back. Lawn edges are strimmed and not treated with any herbicide. Naturalised areas are cut much less frequently to preserve and encourage
Challenges The logistics of maintaining the grassed areas in the height of the season, when thousands of people visit the park, offers the biggest challenge. Flexible working is very much the key here and ISS’s grass cutting teams reprogramme rotas to ensure the grassed areas are cut outside of peak usage times.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP Since 2006, ISS and South Tyneside Council have been working in partnership to offer quality green spaces to local residents and tourists alike. South Marine Park is one such green space, a popular heritage park, which sits directly behind the foreshore, a very heavily used area. The park provides a wide range of passive and active recreation, leisure and entertainment attractions and opportunities for the local community and visitors. It is the Borough’s vision, supported by elected members and officers, to achieve a better future for the people of South Tyneside and to ensure that South Tyneside is an outstanding place to live and bring up families. It is a joint goal to provide safe, clean and secure public spaces for the community to use and enjoy. It is an equally important element of achieving this vision to ensure the provision of quality parks and public spaces. ISS prides itself on delivering a high standard of horticultural and landscape maintenance to South Marine Park. These services are managed to ensure that the park is safe, visually pleasing and contributing towards a quality environment for residents and visitors, so improving the quality of life for the user. Over the course of the partnership, more efficient and innovative ways of working have been found to meet the significantly reducing budgets, whilst still providing valuable green spaces to the residents of South Tyneside and visitors.

Palmstead to host the Soft Landscape Workshop Now in its eighth year, annual industry event Soft Landscape Workshop #Strictly Sustainable, sponsored by Palmstead, is on September 16, 2015. This year the focus is sustainability, with
300 landscape and garden professionals attending. Palmstead’s recent survey of professionals showed a varied level of understanding which can affect how practitioners sell the benefits of sustainability on to their clients and customers. There would appear to be some missed opportunities and not fully realised potential, especially in the domestic and smaller commercial markets. The day aims to improve this understanding and offer advice on how to sell the benefits of working sustainably. Palmstead recently interviewed three of its speakers, a designer (Mary Reynolds), an ecologist (Dusty Gedge) and a client (Ken Trew) to gain their views. Delegates are steadily registering on the website to reserve their seat at what is usually a sold-out day. The cost is £33 and includes lunch. www.palmstead.co.uk
NURSERY NOTES
Boningale’s environmental measures go ‘above and beyond’ industry standard Boningale Nurseries is proud of its environmental credentials and continues to push the boundaries with new and innovative ways to improve efficiencies across all areas of the business. This ethical approach to sustainability was verified again recently with Boningale successfully passing its annual environmental audit, an external audit that covers every process in the business from waste management to energy efficiency to ensure conformity to the ISO 14001 standard. During the inspection this year, the auditor commented that
Boningale continues to operate a well managed system with staff taking the environment and its protection very seriously. Particular note was given to Boningale’s extensive trialling of biological pest controls, its bio-beds to capture chemical run-off, and peat-free propagation and potting trials. The auditor said that these trials along with increased supply chain scrutiny and efficient haulage initiatives are a handful of the measures Boningale has taken to go above and beyond the required performance for ISO 14001. www.boningale.co.uk Pro Landscaper / August 2015 51

Best for: parks and streets Acer platanoides Princeton Gold, also known as Prigo, is a sparkling new cultivar with golden spring foliage that hardens to yellow/green in summer and is recommended for both park and street planting. The UK’s temperate climate suits it down to the ground and the leaf colour makes it one of the best ‘yellows’ on the market. It does well on most soil types, tolerates air pollution and resists drought. This is a yellow foliaged tree not to be overlooked, it thrives in the UK and provides a stunning contrast to an evergreen backdrop. www.barchampro.co.uk
Best for: naturalistic planting Trifolium rubens is from the clover family. This ornamental fully hardy perennial performs well in a sunny spot. Here on the nursery, irrigation water glistens on the slightly hairy leaves and flower buds, giving it a silvery appearance. Trifolium rubens flowers from May to August, blooming from the base and retaining its silvery tips. It is also a good flower for cutting. An upright grower between 30 and 60cm tall with a 30 to 40cm spread, it works well with other plantings and its nitrogen fixing properties mean it can even be used in a green manure mix. www.palmstead.co.uk
Best for: sunny walls Campsis x tagliabuana ‘Madame Galen’ is a fast growing deciduous climber that uses aerial roots to self cling to sunny walls and structures. In late summer, clusters of huge spectacular orange trumpet shaped flowers are borne in abundance. This is a climber that needs space and a really good prune back in the summer, but once it romps away it creates a fantastic display of late summer flowers. Once established and happily sheltered from cold winds, this mighty climber is drought tolerant and can reach up to 12m in height. Other varieties include ‘Summer Jazz’, ‘Tarantella’, ‘Stomboli’ and ‘Dancing Flame’. www.provendernurseries.co.uk
Best for: instant hedging Salix alba ‘Tristis’ White Willow is a native tree that adds interest to any landscape with its shimmering silver leaves rustling gently in the breeze. Often found close to water, this tree can grow up to 25m in height with a wide irregular crown. The name white willow comes from the slender leaves, paler than other species, which have tiny white hairs on
the underside. It is a fast growing tree that can be pollarded or coppiced with the stems often used for weaving. Will grow well in a sunny spot in most well drained to wet soils. www.deepdale-trees.co.uk

Best for: dry soils Eriobotrya japonica ‘Coppertone’ is a small, evergreen tree commonly known as a loquat. It has lovely young foliage, serrated edged and copper in tone. In late spring there are scented pink-white flowers. If the plants are in pots they are easily moved inside for the winter as it is only hardy to -5°C. In open ground a sheltered spot with well drained soil is essential. Wet soils will not be tolerated. Easily trimmed to keep its shape, this plant brings a touch of the exotic to any garden. www.agrumi.co.uk www.prolandscapermagazine.com

TOP OF THE TROPICS Ian Drummond picks his favourites from two very different events, The Office Plant of the Year and RHS Hampton Court Flower Show This month saw the winner of eFig’s Office Plant of the Year announced, with Medinilla Magnifica just pipping Monstera and Ficus Lyrata to the (moss covered..!) post. The criteria wasn’t just good looks though, they had to be great all-rounders and were judged on their ease of care, plus they had to be considered best for relieving stress and cleaning the air. The Office Plant of the Year is a great opportunity to celebrate outstanding plants within the workplace, while underlining the health and productivity benefits that are slowly becoming more widely recognised. The winning Philippine orchid is a stunning plant and an exotic style statement – it’s the perfect choice for offices, particularly in a reception area where its hot pink flower bracts can inject a glamorous pop of colour. Of the two runner ups, the Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera) is really having a moment right now as part of the seventies revival and quite rightly so, it’s easy to care for and doesn’t mind low light, it cleans the air and can grow to gargantuan proportions given the right conditions. Horsehead Philodendron has the same capacity for vastness, and is perhaps even more impressive, with long stalked, deeply dissected leaves that can grow to one metre in length with purple and cream spathes that appear occasionally. For a smaller option within this genus, I would recommend Philodendron Xanadu – a medium-sized exotic shrub that still has the jungle wow factor. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Moving from the indoors to the outdoors and a very hot and sunny sky, at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Show there were some real gems on display. It was hard to choose the three gardens that impressed me the most. The World Vision Garden’s brave use of translucent rods and mirrored boxes was exciting and inspiring, as was the Gallery of Mirrors’ blend of Mediterranean planting and mirrors. The Macmillan Legacy Garden was exciting in a different way – a stunning contemporary garden with woodland planting, creating an exquisite sense of calm.

PRODUCTS
COMPOSITE
DECKING TIPS The list of composite decking products is growing all the time, says Karl Harrison, and they might look the same, even sound the same, but they aren’t. Here he explains why composite is the right choice if you’re after longevity, with a particular focus on the structure underneath, which he believes is far too often overlooked
Why composite instead of timber?
Plastic, HDPE and composite are readily available but why should you use them? In short, they are expensive but last for what seems like forever. No matter how long you may think timber will last, it’s a fact that plastic and some composite products will last longer. If price is a concern, I would suggest plastic joists occupy the middle ground. If the client wants bombproof but can t afford a steel structure, plastic is the way forward. What’s out there?
A standard composite, similar to decking but hollow in form is the most cost effective. Some of these even have a special decking clip that slides into a channel, meaning you only need a handful of screws. Then there is the solid composite, slightly more expensive and
degree, I wouldn’t consider them. Cost and complexity are two reasons too many. I do like the solid plastic joists. They are made from HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene), so they can be made from UK recycled waste and come in many different sizes. My best tip will come later. The long and short of it
Even if it is available, due to the structural qualities you can’t use the standard TRADA or EC5 span charts. Composite or plastic structural products do suffer from not having the structural qualities, for example you can span over 3m with a 150 x 47 C24 timber joist but in the same dimension of plastic you can’t get anywhere like this, you would be at approx 1.25 to 1.5m max… food for thought here, me thinks. Don’t screw it up
taking a little more work. You do need specialist screws for the decking and solid composite joists. There are aluminium structures available but short of having a structural engineering www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Karl HarrisonTW.indd 61
If you try and use these products in the same way as timber you’ll certainly come up short. You can’t use structural screws to mechanically fi the composite oists together you have to blind drill and fi with a stainless M10 (or so) nut and bolt. The main reason for not using screws is that once the screw tip has heated the plastic to penetrate the outer surface when it then drives in, it doesn t provide a sound fi ing, slightly loose at best. Even if you pre-drill prior to fi ing there isn t su cient
mechanical grip to pull the two work pieces together. It does work well with small decking style screws though. Composite posts
These guys are brilliant, no rotting with these bad boys ever. So if your client wants a deck and they insist on longevity I would suggest that at the very least you use plastic posts, rebate the posts as usual and fi with stainless bolts. I suspect that as you are using a very long lasting product you would want to fi together with fi ings that will last the same? Best tips
If your designer is on a mad one and wants you to create a really curvy and di cult looking deck, you should consider using plastic joists to create the curve, thinner sections laminated can create the most insane projects. I would use the composite for square and rectilinear shaped decking and for the curved decks use plastic. The company offers expert decking advice and is the sole UK distributor for high-end timber decking manufactured by Exterpark.

RESIN BOUND
Product: SureSet resin bound paving Where: West London garden
Having moved in three years ago, the owners of this 1950s house in West London embarked on this amazing project and contacted SureSet with a very specific brief: to create a beach scene in their back garden! The motivation for choosing SureSet resin bound paving was no loose stone, low maintenance, permeability and colour choice. Inspiration for the design was New York beaches and English beach huts. SureSet’s technical team created a scaled down sample of the beach scene for approval, before installing in November 2014. SureSet’s artistic installation team laid a bespoke mix of Cream Beige to create the beach and dunes and skilfully created the appearance of sea and waves with colours from their recycled glass range, Spectrum: Winter Frost, Pacific, Light Blue and Sky Blue and 15 additional bespoke shades. Turnabout Landscapes was commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society to build an eye-catching pathway to the main Allium restaurant at the 25th anniversary Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Director Nick Turner recalls that the RHS was looking for something special to stand out in the Inspire zone with its pink theme. The Resin Mill’s resin bound gravel was chosen for its permeability and to show off a new concept in surfacing. The 50m-long pathway had to be constructed in three days, be strong enough to be walked on by over 140,000 people and be completely removed two days later. The path was excavated to a depth of 150mm and a geotextile membrane was laid with 100mm of compacted MOT type 1. A geogrid from Matsgrid was laid and filled with 6mm angular granite. When the base was complete a silver and black resin bound gravel was laid with an edging strip and the pink stone was laid in the middle, all from The Resin Mill. The end result was a real showstopper. WWW.THERESINMILL.CO.UK

Product: Clearstone resin bound surfacing Where: Lanesborough, Wentworth Estate
Clearstone recently installed resin bound paving at this neo-Georgian property on the prestigious Wentworth Estate, home to the Wentworth Golf Club. Newly built Lanesborough is the dream home of John Baines, who project managed much of the building of his Virginia Water residence. When it came to paving, John wanted a sleek, classical look to complement his home but with 1,200m2 of paths, drive and terrace to surface, he didn’t want an expanse of a single colour. Clearstone’s design team created the finished look by laying Clearstone Birch natural stone blend with a Seal flint resin bound inlay border – all edged with aluminium beading. A ‘hands on’ client, John laid the sub-base himself and is delighted with both the quality of Clearstone’s resin bound product and service. WWW.CLEARSTONEPAVING.CO.UK
Product: Bituchem Natratex Cotswold Porous Where: Royal William Yard, Plymouth
Hard landscaping specialist Bituchem has completed the first application of its Natratex Cotswold Porous material at the recently redeveloped Royal William Yard in Plymouth. Designed by Dartington-based Gillespie Yunnie Architects, the new car park is situated within a number of Grade II listed walls, formerly a Grade I listed nursery walled garden. The 140-space car park used Natratex Cotswold Porous as well as real grass with plastic trays for reinforcement, to give the entire 2,000sq m a natural drainage system. Natratex Cotswold Porous is particularly suitable for applications on sites with preservation restrictions, due to the lack of deep earth work needed. It makes application and maintenance easier than other infiltration systems, and because it doesn’t require additional drainage the time and cost of any project is reduced. WWW.BITUCHEM.COM

Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery is one of London's great Victorian cemeteries. In the 1970s the cemetery went into decline but was rescued by a charity, The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust. As part of the ongoing restoration process, the Trust approached Addagrip regarding its new resin bound Terrabase Rustic system for an area of pathway that needed a low maintenance, rustic look sympathetic to the surroundings. Ian Dungavell from the Trust said: “We went for Addagrip because we were after a path as natural looking as gravel but as maintenance free as tarmac, and we didn't want to install a drainage network.” True Grip Ltd was invited to install 90sqm of pathway using Addagrip’s Terrabase Rustic in an oak blend. The 6-10mm stone size gives a hard-wearing finish and is fully porous. The surface was installed without the need for an invasive base build up and noisy machinery. WWW.ADDAGRIP.CO.UK
Product: DekorGrip resin bound surfacing Where: Caernarfon, Wales
As part of a project to rejuvenate the Caernarfon Promenade, the Caernarfon Harbour Trust decided to redesign the surfaces overlooking the Menai Straits. As a major tourist attraction, the surface needed to be extremely durable, facing a large footfall within a 3,000m2 area. DekorGrip’s resin bound system was selected due to its hardwearing nature and that it could be laid at a suitable depth for traffic. Several blends were chosen to complement the historic backdrop, including Brittany Bronze, Sandringham and a bespoke blend designed by the DekorGrip mix team named Black Basalt, used for creating nautical shapes and route markings across the site. The project was recently awarded the ICE Sustainability award. WWW.MEONUK.COM

BAGMA installation course
High Five Training’s founder Ian Mitchell invited me to go back to the classroom and join a group of T H White’s trainee technicians for a BAGMA (British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association) accredited handover and installation course. The course, which took place at T H White’s Reading depot, covers relevant legislation, areas of responsibility, methods, recording and reports for the handover and installation of machinery. The morning theory session began with Ian’s run through
of the BAGMA installation manual’s 20 point breakdown and presentation of practical examples to the students. The checklist covers all installations from professional grounds care through to agricultural practice and it is designed to be used in line with manufacturers’ operator instruction handbooks. Section five of the installation process covered vibration and noise level awareness with Ian offering advice on how to hold the customer’s interest throughout the handover. A smartphone decibel meter app was used as a practical example of how technicians might highlight the volume of average conversation (60 decibels) and the

maximum 84 decibels operators should be exposed to before wearing ear defenders. Ian concluded the theory session by covering trading regulations and the Sale of Goods Act. This included how to deal with customers’ reported mechanical problems. In the afternoon the trainees were tasked with putting their knowledge into practice by delivering a presentation to the group. Ian asked them to pair up and choose two or three checks on the Ransomes Parkway 3, Ransomes Spider 2 and Iseki SXG 323 machines that were at their disposal.
Following the rehearsal, the pairs split up and individuals were asked to provide an installation guide on a different piece of machinery as part of their assessment. The exercise was wellorganised and Ian’s constructive feedback was evidently highly effective as the participants grew in confidence and appeared more assured. The trainees relaxed and showed a marked improvement when relaying their learning to the group, taking the others through the relevant pre-start checks and potential hazards on their particular machines.
excellent feedback from staff users. The new line’s arrival marks the start of a four-year supply agreement during which the council will take on an additional 12 machines, making 30 in total. www.toro.co.uk Pro Landscaper / August 2015 71

LIFE/STYLE
I am a bit of a re-tread! I spent nearly 20 years as a PR/communications hack working at a senior level in PR agencies in London and Australia and latterly as director of communications for the Greater London Authority, when Ken Livingstone became the first directly elected mayor of London. Then I made the career change that transformed my life. I had toyed with studying architecture when I first went to

university in my teens and nearly studied garden design ten years later. Finally in my late 40s I made the decision to change career and study garden design at the Oxford College of Garden Design. This strongly design-based course gave me a thorough grounding in design which, combined with my long client management background, have stood me in good stead in the competitive world of garden design. I suppose two phrases sum up my approach to creating gardens. When it comes to design ‘less is more’ – no fuss or frills and not too many materials in one garden. The second is ‘the devil is in the detail’ – whatever we create is finished and detailed with enormous care and precision. We then micro-manage our projects during the build. At times this can be taxing for my studio team and for our poor contractors who know that something will not pass muster unless it is perfect. 78

PEOPLE
PERSONAL I am quite a driven person professionally and this also extends to my personal life. I am known as a great organiser of dinners, weekends, theatre and opera trips and holidays. You could call me energetic, but some might view it as restlessness. I am a born and bred Londoner. People pull my leg as I am still living in the next road to where I was brought up, but in between I did try some other places. I lived in Australia for many years and also in Italy and France where I had a large farmhouse and vineyard for a while. I still live in London with my ‘young man’ Simon, a retired army officer. We have also rented a lovely house in Wiltshire where we spend as much time as we can. We have the stable block of a wonderful 17th century manor house whose famous gardens, open to the public, wrap around us. So I have the best of both worlds. I absolutely love food and eating it. I suppose I would be described as a reasonably good cook – but this is only so that I can have a constant source of delicious food! Simon moans that I always plan our life around food and meals. And yes, why not? Lucky him I would say!
TRAVEL
I have travelled quite a lot. I was lucky enough to spend eight years living in Australia so not only do I know Australia and New Zealand well, I’ve also had the chance to travel extensively in Southeast Asia. I usually stopped off on the way back to the UK and visited Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. In particular I love Burma, which I visited some years ago – it is still caught in a time warp and is visually one of the most stunning places I have ever been. I know North Africa a little and have visited Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. A few years ago we sailed down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan on a Dahabiya. An extraordinary experience – five days under sail with no engine noise, magnificent sunrises and sunsets over the river and even the occasional swim in the river. We recently returned to the Nile for my birthday in April with 14 friends. I love skiing and go most years. I did a season as a chalet girl in the French Alps in my 20s which was fun, fun, fun. I always thought it would be good to do another season but perhaps not as a kitchen skivvy this time! Gaps in my travel history include much of South America, Scandinavia and most importantly, India where much of my family have lived over the past couple of centuries, including my mother who was born there. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

LOOK OUT FOR...
JAMIE BUTTERWORTH Introducing Jamie Butterworth, YoungHort director, BBC Radio London broadcaster and graduate of Askham College and RHS Garden Wisley
Tell us a bit about yourself I’ve had a passion for gardening since the age of nine and cannot think of anything better than working outdoors with plants. I am currently just coming to the end of my time working at RHS Garden Wisley where I have spent the last two years. I am an associate director for the exciting new movement, YoungHort, which is aimed at promoting horticulture to young people across the country, something I feel very strongly about. I am also a gardening broadcaster for BBC Radio London.
What inspired you to pursue a career in horticulture? Up until my teenage years, I didn’t actually believe you could have a career in horticulture. It was never spoken about at school and never considered an option. I was strongly advised against taking a career in horticulture by my careers advisors and I believe that ignoring that advice was the best decision I’ve ever made. For me, horticulture is one of the greatest careers out there, though I may be a little biased. I feel gardening is such a rewarding career and it is very difficult not to be happy when you spend your life working with plants. What were your first steps into the industry in terms of training? At the age of 16 I began studying at Askham Bryan College in York, a truly fantastic college, 80
Pro Landscaper / August 2015
Look Out ForTW.indd 80
and I studied there for two years, completing my Level 3 extended diploma in horticulture. This opened my eyes to just how diverse our industry is and inspired me to continue studying plants. I then moved down to study for the two year diploma at RHS Garden Wisley. This was the opportunity of a lifetime and I completed it in August 2015. With your training underway, what direction did you envisage your career in horticulture taking? Now I have finished at RHS Wisley, I am moving to work with Hortus Loci and will be joining the team as the assistant show plant manager. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity and one I can’t wait to get stuck into. I am exceptionally excited to be working with Mark Straver and Robin Wallis – two of the leading plantsmen in the country. What they don’t know about plants, isn’t worth knowing. This job combines my love of growing plants and design so it’s truly my perfect job!
Are you planning on entering RHS Chelsea or Hampton Court in the future? Ever since I first visited RHS Chelsea Flower show in 2012, it has been a dream of mine to exhibit there myself. However, for the time being, I am excited to be working with Hortus Loci, where I will be growing the plants for a lot of the top designers at RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court.
What is your day-to-day job at the moment? My day-to-day job at Hortus Loci primarily involves growing the plants for major shows such as RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Hampton Court, working with some of the country’s leading designers to ensure the plants are grown to perfection for their projects – while trying not to get too distracted by the thousands of beautiful plants I’ll be working with – that’s the really challenging bit. How do you see your career developing in the future? Because horticulture is such a diverse career, I couldn’t possibly imagine what I’ll be doing in 10 years time. However, I would love to continue encouraging more young people to come into this incredible industry. I am proud to be a horticulturist, and I want to try to show more young people across the UK just what an exciting and incredibly rewarding industry horticulture really is.
