Welcome Well here we are, the inaugural Pro Landscaper Business Awards – the awards with a difference. Our industry is awash with a range of excellent project-based awards, which showcase the quality of completed projects within the sector. The Pro Landscaper Business Awards, however, sets out to highlight and reward the excellence and determination of those running successful businesses within the UK landscaping sector. Like all awards, they depend upon the industry to get involved – so a huge thank you to all of you who entered, and secondly our thanks go to the judges for taking the time and effort to ensure our judging process was fair and balanced. In our judges, we have been able to pull together people with exceptional experience within the landscaping sector and business as a whole. We would like to put on the record our thanks for their time, commitment and impartiality. Finally, we are grateful to the sponsors who understood our vision to highlight and promote the business side of the landscaping sector. In particular, a huge thanks to our headline sponsor, CED Stone Group. Not only are they a great company and excellent people to deal with, but they are loyal promoters and supporters of the landscaping sector. I hope you have all enjoyed the day and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Thank you all for supporting the Pro Landscaper Business Awards. A massive well done to all the winners and shortlists…

Adtrak is a digital marketing agency based in the heart of Nottingham. Adtrak works in partnership with its clients, creating strategies which build brands and grow businesses. In October 2016, Adtrak became BALI's official digital partner. The project, headed up by Adtrak's account director Ben Shaw, saw the company detail the ways in which BALI and its members could use digital marketing strategies to maximise their online potential. Since the launch of the partnership with BALI, Adtrak has created websites and implemented digital marketing strategies for landscaping companies throughout the country. It now has over 30 clients within the industry, including BALI members and other businesses within the landscaping and garden supplies sector, and has helped them to reach and engage with their target audience online, generating more sales leads as a result.
Lateral Design Studio, in partnership with BDP Architects Lateral Design Studio is a family-run company with more than 30 years of construction experience. It transforms functional construction products into works of art, combining unique designs with cutting-edge 3D design technology. In 2016 Lateral Design Studio was approached by BDP Architects to design a bespoke gulley drain unit for Motcomb Street, Belgravia in London. The client, the Grosvenor Estate, had a vision to restore the pavement and street castings to a focal point as the Victorian foundries had done for over hundred years. John Harte of Lateral Design Studio submitted several design options to the team for their consideration. Lateral Design Studio used modern methods such as 3D design and 3D printing to produce elements of the castings, whilst still allowing the lost Victorian craftsmanship to be used. The client was pleased with the final product, leading to three more follow-on projects, which included several new covers and frames.

Gristwood and Toms, in partnership with Bristol City Council Gristwood and Toms is the UK’s largest and most capable provider of professional arboricultural services. Established for over 45 years, the company remains privately owned and today employs 170 staff from apprentices to registered consultants. The partnership between Gristwood and Toms (G&T) and Bristol City Council (BCC) commenced in 2014 when G&T was awarded a five-year contract to provide arboricultural services. From the outset, both organisations saw an opportunity to challenge the traditional ‘client-contractor’ model and form a mutually beneficial partnering relationship, operating as one collaborative team. Particularly successful initiatives, developed by the partnership that went above and beyond the core purpose of the contract, included developing a commercially viable and award-winning regional wood fuel station, planting one tree for every child in Bristol (over 39,000 trees planted), and enabling community days to engage local people and raise environmental awareness. These included a community watering day during prolonged drought in summer 2017, for which G&T provided labour and equipment at no cost. At the time G&T became involved, Bristol’s Blaise Plant Nursery was consuming over 80,000L of LPG and oil each year to heat their greenhouses, costing £19,000 in energy bills, and producing over 100t of CO2 annually. G&T had the benefit of experience, having previously secured a Defra grant to establish the official North London Wood Fuel Station, converting wood ‘waste’ into a high-grade chip suitable for biomass boilers. Today, Blaise Nursery is home to the south west's first wood fuel station, processing woodchip for biomass boilers installed by the council. The station uses wood ‘waste’ supplied by G&T, generated by the tree work as its fuel source. G&T provides the major plant to process trunks into chip and supplies a special tipping trailer to deliver woodchip to council sites with wood-boilers, including schools, colleges, leisure centres and community halls. The first biomass boiler installation, at Blaise Nursery, won the Regen SW Green Energy Award for 'Best Renewable Energy Project in the South West'. G&T has extended access to other stakeholders, including local housing associations, providing a free source of waste disposal and helping these organisations meet their CO2 reduction targets.

The winner... Glendale
Glendale is a national green space management service provider operating in both the public and private sectors. It recorded a turnover of £48m in 2016. The organisation is a prodigious employer with over 1,400 directly employed staff nationwide, in a range of roles from frontline service delivery to support functions at head office. Six per cent of these employees are currently undertaking apprenticeships. Glendale’s approach to training and development is a direct result of its commitment to addressing the national skills shortage affecting the horticulture, landscaping and arboricultural sectors, as well as the issue of youth unemployment which currently stands at 10.3% in the UK. The company’s apprenticeship scheme and graduate scheme are in place to tackle these challenges. Apprenticeships at Glendale Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular form of education, and form the backbone of Glendale’s succession plan. The company offers apprenticeships to individuals of all ages, across every avenue of the business from administration to utility arboriculture. Glendale currently has 82 apprentices at its contracts across the country, and their training is completed in partnership with a local college, enabling them to gain industry recognised qualifications whilst working. In order to capture a younger demographic, thus targeting youth unemployment, the company launched a one-year, pre-apprenticeship programme aimed at 16 to 17-year-olds who are NEET (not in education, employment or training). Pre-apprentices who successfully complete the one-year programme are invited to continue their training on the five-year scheme. The end result is a career in green space management with the organisation, a recognised qualification and practical skills. Glendale’s apprenticeships are not just limited to younger generations, enabling older individuals to change vocation at a late stage in their careers and bring their wealth of experience to the industry. Apprenticeships are an essential part of Glendale's succession model, and the company works hard to identify roles and pathways for the continued development of its apprentices.

Butter is an RHS Chatsworth Gold medal and People's Choice Award winner, a pe-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers and BALI Award winner. Butter studied plants and plantsmanship in 1998 and has been working in the industry ever since, but it was since studying at the London College of Garden Design in 2013/14 that her business has significantly grown. Butter credits the course as boosting her confidence in both her plant knowledge and design skills, and has led her to be "bolder and more ambitious in the schemes I create for my clients." As her workload has increased, Butter has brought on team members to the business in creative, maintenance and administrative roles. They have recently become VAT registered and a limited company, which Butter calls "the biggest administrative hurdle we've negotiatied recently", but it has given her the "green light" to continue to grow and expand the business. Butter's work has been recognised not just by clients but industry associations and the RHS, which regularly asks Butter for help at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and which invited her to design the garden for Belmond Hotels at their inaugural show at RHS Chatsworth. Butter comments: "Bringing together all the elements to be a good designer is hard enough, but I feel these additional accomplishments and acknowledgements really make my business stand out."

OVERALL WINNER In 2017, Pro Landscaper’s Most Influential was launched, after three years of the phenomenal success of the 30 Under 30: The Next Generation. We thought that, as well as highlighting the best upcoming talent in the industry, we should also recognise those who have been so instrumental in shaping the landscape sector as it is today, as well as into the future. The voting came from industry peers and colleagues, and the final group of 24 were announced at FutureScape in November 2017. Today we acknowledge the person with the most votes in that group, an individual who has dedicated his life to his work and the wider landscaping community. Mark Gregory is the worthy winner of 2017’s Most Influential; here are some of the reasons people voted for him:
“
