We think that the UK and Ireland has some of the most amazing natural stone resources in the world, so we have worked hard to make the best ones available for our customers to use in their commercial and urban realm projects. We are passionate about supporting British quarries and want to inspire the rest of the landscaping industry to use these beautiful materials.

WELCOME

WELCOME

This year marks 40 successful years of trading for CED Stone Group, a milestone that we’re very proud of reaching as a family business.

O

ver the last four decades, we’ve worked hard to stay at the forefront of the landscape industry and fulfil the needs of an ever-changing market. My father, Michael Heap, founded CED in it’s present guise back in 1978. There was no other company like CED in the UK nobody else supplied unusual or special stone materials like we did. Quite simply, CED led the way. In some respects, other companies in the market have copied us here and there – but nobody offers the whole range of hard landscaping materials that we offer our clients. We have always looked for new ideas and new products, just because we find them interesting and we think our clients will too. For example, a couple of years ago we helped to develop a beautiful Green Schist from Scotland. It is the sort of new source that only turns up once in a lifetime – nobody really knew that sort of stone even existed in the UK, and the first orders are now being supplied with the very first delivery laid outside the Natural History Museum earlier this year. That’s something to be proud of; we have helped create a wonderful, new public space using a newly discovered, stunning British stone that will still be there in a hundred years. That is exactly the kind of project that makes us tick. Our natural stone materials have been used in amazingly creative ways by some of the world’s most innovative garden, landscape and urban designers. We’ve been honoured to see our materials showcased at some of the most prestigious horticultural events in the world, such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and

BBC Gardener’s World Live, to name but a few, and also in projects all over the UK, from the Highlands of Scotland to the promenades of England’s south coast towns. Renowned places like Inverness Campus, Roker Pier, Marine Walk, Sunderland City Centre, Camden Market, Canary Wharf, The Tower of London and even London Zoo’s fantastic Penguin Enclosure have all been supplied by CED! We have always been known as CED Ltd, but now after a company-wide rebrand we are moving forward as the CED Stone Group. Beautiful landscapes are really what we are all about; we want to help create and shape the environment which our children and our children’s children grow up in, with inspiring, beautiful landscapes. One of the main focuses of this company has always been to inspire people to use our products in the best way, indeed in the most sustainable way possible, so updating our brand and logo is our way of re-envisioning who we are and reminding people of our values, ready for the next generation of designers, contractors, clients and architects who will inspire us all with beautiful landscapes. I would like to express my gratitude to all of our industry friends, stakeholders and employees who have supported us over the years, and thank our brilliant customers who have always trusted us to source the best and most interesting materials available for their landscaping projects. We look forward to seeing what your inspiration brings. Giles Heap, Managing Director CED Stone Group

NEW BRANDING

NEW BRANDING We’ve celebrated our 40th anniversary with the unveiling of a completely new brand – something that we have been developing for over two years. With a new brochure printed and an updated website design being developed for next year, it’s been an extensive undertaking for the company – but we’ve been delighted to see such a fantastic response from the landscaping industry!

As a company we have certainly changed and grown over the years, so it was important for our new branding to reflect this. In order to develop a fresh, updated style that our customers could engage with, we needed to explore what our company stood for and rediscover the values behind our business. No matter how big we grow, we want to always stay true to our family-run ethos. Our vision is to continue to provide the landscape industry with beautiful, sustainable, ethically sourced materials – allowing them to create more enjoyable, safer spaces for future generations. We are committed to responsible, ethical trade and reducing slave labour within our supply chain and will continue to actively support the development of schools, education and environmental awareness programs in areas less developed than our own. At a core level, we have always been known for supplying our customers with the

best products on the market, with the highest levels of customer service. Without fail, we bring our expert industry knowledge to everything we do, and we use that knowledge to inspire our customers to create beautiful landscapes. Our values: We act with integrity We will always communicate with complete transparency. We do what we say we will, and we keep our promises. It’s why our customers trust us and depend on us to give them the very best level of service. Our honest approach and helpful,

knowledgeable and respectful manner are what set us apart in the industry. We take our responsibilities to our staff, customers, stakeholders, supply chain and wider community very seriously. We act honourably, sustainably and with a conscience in everything we do. We strive to do the right thing at all times. We provide quality We let our products do the talking. We are proud to be setting the standard in the industry. It’s what we have always been known for and it’s what our clients rely on. We will never settle for second best in materials, customer service or business practices.

NEW BRANDING

We are proactive We will always go above and beyond for our customers. We love it when they set us a difficult challenge. It’s when all our expertise and experience shine through, helping us come up with the unexpected. It’s what continues to keep us at the forefront of the stone industry. But we will never become complacent. We are always looking for new ways to do things, new suppliers, new materials, new technology, new techniques. We love tradition, but we love new too.

have a responsibility to act ethically in all areas of our business and the way we trade. We live and breathe this, maintaining the highest ethical standards when sourcing our materials and moving towards using renewable energy sources as much as possible. It’s more than just words, it’s actions. We are funding education in less developed countries and are actively campaigning for the end of slave labour. We want to create a legacy that future generations can enjoy. One we can all be proud of.

We are knowledgeable We love sharing what we know with clients, customers and anyone with an interest in stone. Our expertise is second to none in the industry. We help clients make informed choices about materials, sourcing and quality, often saving them time and money and lessening their impact on the natural environment. We may have over 40 years’ experience but we know we still have much to learn. We provide our staff with the very best training and development so that they can continue to grow with us.

Our new branding is more than just a logo and some coloured graphics. It is a complete refresh on the old classic style, with a modern look that still represents everything that we stand for. The two distinct divisions within CED Stone Group - CED Stone Landscape and CED Stone Commercial - have been given their own identities. Each have their own logos, core graphics and colour palettes to create a sense of distinction whilst still fitting in with the cohesive style of the overall company group. By separating the two divisions we can fully connect with all of our clients who will have different requirements depending on their project. Our new positioning statement, inspiring beautiful landscapes, takes centre stage across all of our advertising materials and communication channels to help convey our message. February was a particularly exciting time for us, as we unveiled our new look at the SGD’s Awards Ceremony at The Landmark in London, an event that we were delighted to sponsor. We’re now looking ahead to an exciting future dedicated to developing new products, trading in an ethical manner and supporting the hardlandscaping industry.

We are collaborative We are stronger together. Working as a part of a team allows us to go the extra mile for our clients. It allows us to work flexibly and efficiently, delivering the very best service. Our collaborations with customers and the wider landscape industry give us the opportunity to contribute to amazing outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. Our open and honest approach to business means we are always learning from feedback and continually strive to find more ways to work smarter. Together. We act ethically We want to do good in the world. We

ASSOCIATIONS

WORKING WITH ASSOCIATIONS Working with other bodies within the landscape industry helps us to extend our reach to more and more people, and inspire the continued use of natural stone as a hard-landscaping material. Joining and working with some of the best associations in the market means that we can pass on our knowledge, build relationships and make a difference in the hard-landscaping industry. BALI The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) was established in 1972 as the UK’s representative trade association for the landscaping sector. Members include interior and exterior landscapers, designers, grounds maintenance contractors and companies supplying industryrelated products and services. All of BALI’s members have one thing in common: a commitment to delivering professional excellence by continually raising standards across the industry. CED Stone Group have worked with BALI since 1986. HTA and APL Established in 1899, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is the trade association for the UK gardening industry. The association is dedicated to developing the industry and helping the businesses of its members, who include most garden centres and other garden retailers, growers, landscapers, manufacturers and suppliers. The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) is an association within the HTA, established in 1995, and comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK.

www.cedstone.co.uk

Working with associations.indd 9

Members must agree to follow a ‘Customer Charter’, hold appropriate insurance and have traded for at least two years. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Stone Federation (GB) The official trade association for the natural stone industry, the Stone Federation aims to promote the use of natural stone as a building material in favour of other building materials, and co-ordinates all aspects of the industry; providing specifiers and users with a first point of contact for information, advice and guidance in sourcing an appropriate material and a reliable service. The Stone Federation represents employers, liaises with government on legal affairs, health and safety, technical standards, craftsmanship, training and education. ALCI The Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland (ALCI) was founded in 1971 as a representative body for the Irish landscape sector. It has since endeavoured to focus on quality and improve standards within the sector in Ireland and is today the leading professional body for

landscape contractors with over 150 members across its Northern and Southern regions. Japanese Garden Society The Japanese Garden Society (JGS) was founded in 1993 and welcomes amateur, professional garden designers and horticultural lovers with an interest in the garden styles of Japan. Bringing these people together to help them share their interests with other like-minded people, the JGS are a national society with regional groups around the UK. Running local events, lectures, garden visits, meetings and talks, their principal aim is ‘to advocate the education of the public in the conservation, cultivation and propagation of Japanese Gardens’. Supporting the SGD The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) have a rigorous membership acceptance process, meaning that their members are some of the leading names in the garden design industry. Members must have been in business for a minimum of three years, in addition to participating in a certain amount of training and professional development. CED Stone Group are proud supporters of the SGD, supporting their events and hosting Designer Development training days.

ETHICAL TRADE

ETHICAL TRADE INITIATIVE Ethical trade is about looking after workers in our supply chains and implementing changes that impact positively on their lives. As a whole, it is about retailers, merchants and their suppliers taking responsibility for improving conditions for the people who make the products that they sell. We source quality natural stone products sourced from across the globe, including quarries and factories in many parts of Europe, South America, Asia and the Far East. The UK imports huge quantities of stone from production sites in countries like China and India, mainly their mining and production capabilities outweigh other areas in terms of sheer size and scale. This coupled with the variety of colour and stone types available makes sourcing from these countries an economical and popular choice. Unfortunately, due to many in-country issues these sites can be prone to widespread issues of worker’s rights abuses. As one of the leading stone companies in the UK’s landscaping industry, we consider it our duty and responsibility to conduct our business in an ethical manner, a value that we prioritise across the board at CED Stone Group. We dedicate a lot of time and resources to monitor and map our worker factories and then act to remedy and improve ethical sourcing issues. We know that we are only as good as our supply chain – our suppliers form an integral part of our identity. Our business could not survive without the strong longterm supplier base that we have nurtured and grown. The trust and understanding built up in these relationships has proved key to opening the door to honest discussions on ethical trade issues. We work closely with these key suppliers, 10

CED Stone Group 40th Anniversary Supplement

Ethical Trade Initiative.indd 10

constantly reinforcing that the ethical work and improvements run alongside the business contracts and levels that we structure with them. We rigorously inspect and audit these supplier sites to look for signs that human rights abuses are, or might be present. Company size is important when it comes to how much influence one can realistically exert on supplier factories. Experience has taught us that collaboration and multiple stakeholder programs are the best way to influence improvements in regions where our business levels alone cannot affect positive change. To this end we joined The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) back in April 2012, adopting their Base Code of labour practices which we expect all our suppliers to work towards. The ETI brings corporate, trade union and voluntary sector members together in a unique alliance that enables us to collectively tackle many issues that cannot be addressed by individual companies working alone. By using our knowledge of the ethical issues and working with The ETI to harness their expertise, knowledge and resources, we are able to effectively identify problems and help develop longlasting solutions. Some solutions we’ve implemented have been as simple as providing the right kit. Our free personal protective equipment distribution in China has benefited hundreds of workers in eight factories

across three different provinces. This includes high-quality dust masks which filter microscopic particles, which when inhaled can lead to serious lung diseases, high visibility padded vests and ear defenders. This in turn has led to factory managers getting on board and allowing us access to interview workers to establish their true situation as well as introduce a program of health and safety training sessions. Our most successful ethical collaboration has been in India as part of the Rajasthan Sandstone Working Group (RSWG). Our work has included capacity building creating ethical tools such as pass books and silicosis awareness leaflets as well as running training sessions and worker open day events. As a direct result of our work with this project as well as the efforts, investment and commitment of our supplier NNG, we have seen some major improvements for the factory workers here. Some examples of recent upgrades include: regular and properly documented factory meetings regarding health and safety, accident reporting and grievance reporting. All workers now have bank accounts and all salary payments are made directly into these accounts. They all now have pension and accident insurance. The building of more protective covered areas so that workers can work and have their breaks out of the sun, and newly constructed wash room and toilet block facilities for use by all workers. www.cedstone.co.uk

CALUM FRASER, COMMERCIAL DIVISION DIRECTOR SAYS: “I have recently returned from India where I attended an event fully sponsored by the NNG Foundation which is the charity run by our trading partner in India. The focus for the day was all about the children supported by the foundation through education, as well as many other disadvantaged children in the region who are succeeding in dance and theatre. There were several award ceremonies and prizes for the children to celebrate their accomplishments. We are a major contributor to this foundation and support it whenever we can. It has been a truly humbling experience for me to have previously

visited the schools that they are supporting and to have met the vibrant and bright children, who because of the foundation, now have a real chance of succeeding in life. “We have worked closely with our Indian partner for a number of years and together successfully improved the lives of the workers at their factories, and beyond. They told me during this recent visit that when I first mentioned ethics to them they thought, what is he on about? Who is he to tell us what needs improved? They now see it as the best thing for their business and are extremely proud of the way it has

elevated the status of their company. They are seeing the benefits of quality and efficient production carried out by a happy, motivated and well looked after work force. They shared with me presentations on ethical improvements, inspired by the training sessions we have run with them over the last years. The managers who attended showed me how they have taken the learning and used it practically at the factories. This is truly what ethical trading is about and all that I see here is sustainable, and has changed for the better, the lives of so many workers”.

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW DAVE GREEN

Dave Green, designer of Evolve: Through the Roots of Time which exhibited at this years’ RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, talks of his collaboration with CED Stone Group. The space used a total 35 bulk bags of gravel and several tonnes of loose stone to cover its 1200m2, making it the largest exhibit. What was your experience like working with CED on Evolve: Through the Roots of Time? It was great working with CED, they were involved from a very early stage and we were able to talk through all the different areas in the exhibit and they made recommendations about the finishes and treatments that would work best. A key part of the design was trying to differentiate between different time periods and we wanted to use different materials to emphasise the change, CED came up with some great ideas which really helped to make this possible. What advice and guidance did CED offer? At the start of the exhibit we wanted to create a very desolate looking space and we had originally thought about trying to create a very grey moonscape. However, CED suggested using their Golden Quartz stone which was available in large pieces along with different sized gravels. We were really pleased with the result.

Where did you draw inspiration from? The exhibit was inspired by the development of plants through time. We identified five key periods when there were quite big changes in plant evolution. Once we had identified them, we looked at what the natural environment at these times was, and that inspired each area of the exhibit. What happened to the garden after the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show? The mirrored area was donated to a local riding school that we’ve worked with before, they were interested in using the mirrors to allow the students to check their posture and positions. Most of the stone was returned to CED to be reused in other projects, and the small planting was taken to a plant rehoming event at Morden Hall Park. What was the feedback from the public like? We had lots of really positive comments

from the visitors who said that the concept really made them think. A few of them said that seeing the development of plants through time really boggled their minds. Some of the visitors said that it made them more aware of the power of nature and plants, and how amazing they really can be. Have you got any other projects currently planned? I’ve just finished work on a show garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park all about gardening in a warmer climate and making the most of the shade. As well as this, I’ve also started working on a couple of residential garden projects.

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

ADAM WHITE

Adam White, Landscape Institute’s new president tells us why he decided to #ChooseLandscape How did you first become interested in landscape architecture? It goes back to when I was a six-year-old growing cress and mustard on my windowsill. I knew back then that I wanted to be a landscape architect – I just didn’t know the profession existed. I would have found the #ChooseLandscape campaign really useful back then, and therefore I am delighted to be involved in developing this alternative route into the landscape profession. So how did you come to start your own business? I moved to London where I established my own landscape architectural practice with fellow ex-Groundwork Landscape Architect Andrée Davies. For the last ten years we have been creating flagship nature play spaces across the UK, working with National Trust, RSPB, English Heritage, Royal Parks and Forestry Commission, along with numerous local authorities. In 2007 we created our first RHS Gold Medal show garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show called Playscape, with the aim to help reconnect children with nature through play, and in 2017 we were invited back to create another garden, with Caudwell Children, for our tenyear anniversary. How did that go? We knew it was going to be good but we didn’t expect to win a Gold medal, RHS People’s Choice Award,

www.cedstone.co.uk

Adam White interview.indd 15

and RHS Best in Show. We were keen to promote the value of therapeutic landscapes to a much wider audience, and now people are asking us about what horticulture and landscape can do for mental health, accessibility, inclusion, and learning. We’ve also just been commissioned by the RHS to create a new Wild at Wisley Children’s Garden at RHS Wisley. Why did you decide to stand for presidency of the landscape institute? It has been said a few times to me that I should run and I have always said I’m not old enough, but people turned around and said the profession needs someone like me with my vibrancy and energy. I spoke to three of the most important people in my life, my partner Sarah, my mum, and Andrée. They all gave their blessing and their support and told me I should do it. What are your goals as president/ how are you going to engage young people? One of the most pressing challenges is that the landscape profession is experiencing a skills shortage at a time when the sector is growing. In order to help inspire more people into the profession, I intend to provide support and leadership through the new #ChooseLandscape campaign. People might have seen the BALI Go Landscape campaign and their fantastic RHS Gold Medal winning garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this summer. #ChooseLandscape compliments the great work BALI have been doing to encourage future generations into the industry. #ChooseLandscape is the perfect resource for anyone to find out what opportunities are out there in the landscape profession. I believe this is going to be instrumental in promoting the different routes into the profession, and to ensure a diverse and healthy workforce for the future.

HOW DID CED STONE GROUP BRANCH OUT INTO COMMERCIAL PROJECTS?

As we grew, and with the millennium fast approaching, we saw that a separate department specifically supplying stone to the growing number of ambitious, bespoke landscape projects was the natural progression. The UK was ready to start developing its town centres and urban realm areas with fresh thinking, and the gap in the market was evident. CED Stone Commercial has successfully supplied to public realm and commercial projects ever since. Initially specifying traditional stones from Europe, the team then began sourcing materials from Asia, offering greater variety and more competitive production costs. The first Chinese container was imported in 1998. Now, our team has grown to import hundreds of containers world-wide each year. As a result, their portfolio has grown rapidly, including small complicated designs to large-scale town centre regenerations and prestigious high-profile schemes. Our experienced experts help with material specification and

16

technical support all the way through to project management and delivery, ensuring that you receive quality, durable materials and excellent customer service. Supplying an extensive range of stones to commercial projects with full consideration for ethical and sustainable sourcing, our materials are tested at our in-house laboratory to ensure suitability, and are CE marked to meet current European standards. CED Stone Commercial’s supply chains include many long-term partners, which along with our in-house ISO9001:2015 certified management systems ensure quality products and service are delivered every time.

Beautiful landscapes require beautiful paving, and our customers know that we will help them find the right product. The materials within our paving ranges are carefully selected for their colours and textures, as well as their quality and technical advantages. From sturdy granites and classic sandstones to smart slates and elegant limestones; paving is available in a wide variety of materials that combine both style and practicality.

Expertly developed and professionally crafted, TIER® is a high-quality stone panelling system specifically designed to create a distinctive, natural stone wall finish. TIER® is fantastic for creating stylish feature walls, courtyard walls, retaining walls, raised flower beds and seating areas. It looks effective when combined with other natural stone products in a landscape scheme, such as coping stones, paddlestones and aggregates.

BOULDERS

PORCELAIN

With the correct placing, boulders can make beautiful rockery arrangements in your outdoor space. Our boulders are mainly sourced from Scotland and are available in a range of sizes, so you can create natural looking schemes. They make fantastic additions to wild gardens, natural pools, water features and woodland schemes. We can also source unique, specialist boulders on request.

A remarkable alternative to natural stone paving, our porcelain paving tiles are exceptionally strong and require very little maintenance. With our EMPEROR and Mijo porcelain ranges, your paved space won’t require sealing and will still be frost, weather and acid resistant. Looking for darks that won’t fade or hoping to create a fresh look with clean whites? With so many colours and styles available, you’re sure to feel inspired.

STANDING STONES Our Standing Stones and Palisades will draw the eye and bring a touch of drama to your outdoor space. Even the simplest of garden designs can be transformed with a strategically placed Standing Stone amongst planting. Our range consists of unique and durable stones which have been carefully selected based on their interesting shapes, textures and colour variations. We also offer a bespoke masonry service.
