150 MARK GREGORY CELEBRATES 150th SHOW GARDEN
T
his year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show will see Mark Gregory of Landform Consultants build his 150th RHS show garden. The Landform team will be building The Hartley Botanic Garden, designed by Catherine MacDonald, along with two other gardens at the event.
there’s probably one garden that sticks in my mind: the Savills Garden designed by Philip Nixon and Marcus Barnett in 2006. It’s one that I often open presentations with because it was poured polished concrete, white rendered walls, and it rained an awful lot. The concrete couldn’t have been more complicated, and we only had seven days to build and polish it.We ended up waxing it, and it got Best in Show and a Gold Medal, but in reality, it wasn’t what it was meant to be. That was the most stressful garden I’ve ever built.
How d d yo rst ecome n ol ed n ld ng show gardens Chelsea was always on my agenda. I trained with the RHS when I was younger, where we were bussed down to Chelsea to help set up RHS displays. I was blown away by the scale and professionalism and just thought I needed to be a part of it. In 1989, two months after my first compan andmar had started trading we were asked to build a trade exhibit, not a garden. The RHS was thrown by it because it was very much a garden, though I don’t think it was judged because it wasn’t in the schedule. hat was the first show garden e er built. his is my 27th consecutive year at Chelsea.
o ha e een awarded n mero s medals y the RHS h ch old edal are yo most pro d o and why The Gold Medal I’m most proud of would be my own personal one in 2008 for The Children’s Society Garden. It was a tiny little garden that got a lot of design acclaim and got the charity a lot of kudos and press coverage. It pushed a few boundaries.
Land orm Cons ltants s ld ng three show gardens at Chelsea th s year hat do yo th nk makes yo stand o t I think an enthusiasm and determination to accept nothing but the best. What sets us aside as a company, not just me, is our willingness to help other people. Chelsea can be a daunting place for anybody, especially if you’re young and new to it, and sometimes you just need a friendly face. Particularly in 2010, one of the most memorable things for me was helping so many people. I can’t walk past somebody if they’re going to mess something up – I’ll get involved, not because I’m interfering but because I don’t want anybody to have a bad day. I think that’s our USP on that site.
h ch garden sho ld ha e won a old t d dn’t I personally thought last year we were robbed. I’m very philosophical about it really. Last year, the Singapore Hidden Beauty of Kranji garden, was spectacular. I thought it was a really harsh decision. I’m an RHS judge as well, and I really didn’t understand the judging on that one. The Chelsea Flower Show had never seen anything quite like it on Main Avenue, and that in itself should have been a celebration. John Tan and

I believe in WorldSkills – I want to put it a bit more on the map. It annoys me that we talk about apprentices but as a country we don’t recognise WorldSkills. I think it’s an amazing thing for people to do.

Raymond Toh, and everyone else, was happy with it, and after 150 gardens you can’t get that precious about it. The feedback is really important – I still want feedback even when I get a Gold Medal.

PLANTS

A
s we all know, the most important part of the Chelsea Flower Show is the plants. As I may have mentioned once or twice, this year I am jointly responsible for the growing of the plants for four Main Avenue gardens. Having grown up watching Chelsea on TV, I dreamed of visiting the show and
Hugo Bugg – Royal Bank of Canada Out of all the gardens we are growing for this year, this is by far the most challenging and daunting. Don’t get me wrong if we can pull it o it will be one of the most unique gardens Chelsea has ever seen. Being a Jordanian garden, the nature of the plants means they hate warm, wet weather – exactly the weather we've had this winter. Hugo is creating a garden based on humanity’s need for water. As you can imagine, the planting pallet is based on Jordanian natives and plants that grow in areas of drought. The plant list for Hugo’s garden includes plants that I had never even heard of.

idolised the designers – so it is a huge privilege to grow the plants for them and work with them now. Hortus Loci, the nursery I work for, was founded by plant masters Mark Straver and Robin Wallis, who have about 70 years of experience between them growing plants for some of the world's best designers. Hortus is only four
years old, yet in those four years it has managed to net ten Gold Medals, two People’s Choice Best in Show Awards, and one Best in Show. Not bad going. Growing the plants for Chelsea begins in June the prior year. For a brief breakdown of how we grow the plants, see page 84 of this month’s Pro Landscaper.

Silybum marianum Milk Thistle A large growing thistle with striking foliage, vivid white veins run through the large spiny leaves. Naturally grows wild across Jordan and other middle eastern countries. Flowering in its second year, this biennial can grow up to 1.5m. Surely a first for helsea.

JUDGING
THE RHS JUDGING PROCESS F
or those who are not directly involved with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the criteria for winning one of its highly coveted RHS Medals may be slightly mystifying. RHS medals are awarded to horticultural exhibits as a mark of excellence by highly experienced judging panels and there are four grades; Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze. For Show Gardens, the judging process involves three stages: assessment,
Step
1
judging and moderation, and it begins prior to the gardens even being built on site. Five weeks prior to judging a client’s brief form is sent to designers, which they have two weeks to complete and return. These briefs are collated by the RHS and sent to the relevant judging panels two weeks before judging so that they can be read by the judges in advance of them coming to site.
Assessment (Sunday 22 May 2016)
A team of three assessing judges will visit the garden, where a two minute presentation is given by a representative of the garden. Any developments since submitting the brief can be highlighted, and questions can be asked by the judges. Based on a combination of the brief, the presentation and the garden itself, the garden is closely inspected and the judges decide what standard the garden has achieved for each of the nine criteria, eg ‘Excellent’ for Construction. There is a corresponding mark associated with each standard, so ’Excellent’ is awarded four marks, ‘Very Good’ three marks. The marks are tallied and the overall score generates a medal recommendation.
Step
2
Judging (Monday 23 May 2016)
The three assessing judges are joined by the four judges to create a judging panel of seven. The panel visit each completed garden and review the medal recommendation having read the client’s brief and the assessment notes in advance. If there is any disagreement regarding the standard achieved for a criterion as indicated by the assessing judges, further discussions are held. The entire judging panel then vote on the standard achieved for each of the nine criteria and the corresponding number of points is totalled to determine the final medal to be awarded.
Step
3
Moderation (Monday 23 May 2016)
The judging panel is accompanied by a moderator – an experienced judge who ensures that the panel’s application of the set criteria is consistent for each garden. Following a final decision, exhibitors will receive verbal feedback from both the Chair of Judging and the Chair of Assessing Judges, as well as a feedback sheet showing the standard they have achieved for each of of the nine criteria.

The inspiration for the 2016 M&G Garden is a memory of ancient oak woodland on Exmoor National Park. A stone and gravel path leads you through stunted oaks and rocks to a smoother path, then on to the centrepiece of a sunken terrace and pool. The garden could be seen as a metaphor for clarity and the future, with the path unsure to begin with, but smoothing out once the chosen career becomes clear. The overriding oak theme is a symbol for the sponsor M&G's values: strength, growth, longevity and reliability.

The Cloudy Bay Garden
Sam Ovens’ garden design is inspired by Cloudy Bay’s 30-year wine-making heritage at the pioneering winery in the Marlborough region of New Zealand, and uses nature as a source of inspiration. The garden is envisioned to be a secluded retreat in which to escape, providing a tranquil space designed to evoke memories as visitors savour the experience of the garden. The main material is western red cedar timber, which is used in the construction of the deck, boardwalks and cabin. It is a natural material that exudes quality. A large re ecti e pool adds a sensor ele ent to the design with connotations of setting sail and drifting away or escaping.
Did you know? DID YOU KNOW?
Before gaining a degree in Garden Design from Falmouth University, Sam Ovens studied product design, so structures and furniture always play a key role in his creations.

The Hartley Botanic Garden
The focal feature of the Hartley Botanic Garden is a glasshouse structure attached to a walled garden including colourful mixed perennials. It is both a folly and a retreat and houses tropical, aquatic and carnivorous plants. Views of the surrounding woodland can be appreciated and enjoyed from within the glasshouse. Inspiration for the glasshouse to be built emerging from a pool came from Thomas Heatherwick’s Bombay Sapphire heated glasshouses built on the River Test in Hampshire. Around the pool the planting is soft with a gentle colour palette of white, blue and pink, which helps to create a feeling of enclosure.

The back wall of the plot is cloaked by clipped Carpinus in several cartoonish sizes and shapes. The garden contains humour, design integrity, detailed execution and heritage.
