Welcome to the December issue, the last of 2015. This year has seen further recovery in the domestic landscape sector and from speaking to many people at FutureScape, it is apparent that though still cautious, their forward order books are looking positive. Talking of FutureScape, we would like to reiterate our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, from the exhibitors who made such a huge effort with their stands, to the speakers and many visitors – without you this premier landscape event would not be what it is today. We were particularly pleased to see people’s passion coming through in the debates, and this has given us food for thought for future development of the show and Pro Landscaper. with the response to the inaugural 30 Under 30: The Next Generation, an idea born out of the debates at last year’s FutureScape, and we hope that the people awarded the accolade will use it to help further their careers. We thank all of them for attending the presentation and wish them a long and successful career in our industry. We will be launching the next 30 Under 30 early in 2016, so please encourage your colleagues and employees to enter. NEWS SHED The Heritage Lottery Fund announces funding for Landscape Partnerships The Heritage Lottery Fund has announced £31m of funding for 13 projects ranging from mountains to wetlands and from the Orkney Isles to Cornwall.

The HLF estimates that the projects will impact 3,000km2 of countryside by supporting conservation work, reconnecting local communities and creating jobs. Among this year’s successful projects are: ● The Broads Landscape Partnership, Norfolk, ‘Water, Mills and Marshes’ project, awarded £2.6m; ● Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership Scheme, Forest

of Bowland, Lancashire, awarded £2m; ● Callander’s Pass, ‘Mind the

Gap’ project in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Scotland, which will receive £1.5m; ● The Dee Valley in north east Wales for its ‘Our Picturesque Landscape’ which gets £1.4m. Environment minister Rory Stewart said: “The Heritage Lottery Fund is now playing an absolutely central role in conserving and restoring our landscape. This is only the beginning of what we can all do, working together.” The closing date for the next Landscape Partnership applications is 1 June, 2016. Grants range from £100,000 to £3m. www.hlf.org.uk

Ken White joins HTA board Ken White, managing director of Frosts Landscapes, has accepted a position on the Horticultural Trade Association’s (HTA) Board as a director. He joined Frost Landscapes as an operations manager twelve years ago, becoming managing director in 2012. Ken, who is a member of the Association of Professional Landscapers committee, is looking forward to working with the HTA board to drive the APL business strategy and to assist in developing solutions to the issues affecting the

horticultural sector. He said: “I am delighted to join the HTA Board. It is important that the APL has a strong voice on the board ensuring that the views of landscapers are heard along with all the other sectors across the garden industry. “My role as the APL Representative on the board is to ensure that the interests of the landscaping members are brought to the front. The APL committee has an ambitious plan and I will be seeking to work with my colleagues on the board to further those plans.” www.the-hta.org.uk

New HQ for Janine Pattison Studios Janine Pattison Studios (JPS) has announced that it is relocating to larger freehold premises in Poole in the spring of 2016. The move will facilitate better client servicing and

Both our clients and our team deserve the best and this new building will provide everyone with exceptional facilities.” www.janinepattison.com

Scott Anderson, sales director of ANS Global, said: “The new installation is designed to create an atmosphere that promotes a stress free environment for the employees at HSBC. Moss walls bring a strong element of nature into the built environment and a more natural environment is generally calming.” The moss walls are part of a much bigger refurbishment project designed to increase productivity and encourage employees to meet in social areas rather than having to use formal meeting rooms. www.ansgroupglobal.com www.prolandscapermagazine.com

The Outdoor Room celebrates 20th anniversary The Outdoor Room celebrated its 20th anniversary in October with a party for 100 guests including past and present staff, clients, designers and suppliers. Managing director David Dodd explained how he had just finished as a full time lecturer at Merrist Wood in 1995 when he set up the company with an old pick-up truck, a few tools and a labourer who was a former student. He said: “In my first year I

turned over £47,000 which I was delighted with and I knew I’d need more staff. This year we have a turnover of nearly £2m.” Joe Perkins and Gavin Barrett paid tribute to David Dodd during the dinner and there followed a presentation by David himself. A collection that raised £555 for horticultural charity, Perennial was received by Kate O’Shea. David finished with a toast to his staff and said he was very much looking forward to the next 20 years. www.theoutdoorroom.co.uk

APL launches apprenticeship programme The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Apprenticeship Programme was launched in November with 10 apprentices coming together for their first intensive five-day bootcamp session. A partnership between the APL, Myerscough College and the Landscape Skills Academy has brought industry standards, apprenticeship expertise and training excellence together under one roof. Supported by suppliers, the programme will expose apprentices to the latest products, tools, equipment and practice. All partners and supporters had a similar aim – to develop apprentices who will meet current and future industry needs, demonstrating a significant increase in knowledge and skills and a great attitude to work. Employers who have invested in their staff on the 2015 programme include: ● Oakley Landscapes ● Landform Consultants ● The Plants and Paving

Company ● Green Rooms Landscapes and

Gardens ● RG Landscape and

Construction Ltd

The agreement limits TfL’s contribution to the construction of the Bridge to £10m rather than the original £30m, meaning that the negotiations for the bridge’s south landing site in Lambeth will resume.

NEWS IN BRIEF Campaign for National Parks decides against legal challenge

The Campaign for National Parks confirmed that it will not mount a legal challenge against North York Moors National Park Authority’s decision to approve the York Potash minehead and mineral transport system. The decision follows a detailed review of all relevant documentation and was made based on legal advice.

Penny Evans, APL learning and careers manager, said: “The APL Apprenticeship Programme has defined the standards to be met and shaken up the delivery model, moving away from day release to intensive five-day training bootcamps focusing on technical skills, personal responsibility, team working and a dose of inspiration.” Jody Lidgard of Landscape Skills Academy said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the industry to plug into an educational programme with real bite. We are forging the first cohort of landscape construction learners who will not only be work ready, but more importantly have the skills to propel their companies into an increasingly buoyant marketplace.” www.landscaper.org.uk

Councillor Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth council, had suspended the negotiations because of growing concerns about the £30m TfL had contributed to the scheme. Cllr Peck said: “I’m pleased that Londoners are getting a better financial deal, particularly at a time of austerity when all public sector organisations are being forced to make deep cuts to services.”

Glendale transforms community garden

Glendale has helped transform a community garden in partnership with a charity that uses horticultural therapy to help people with autism, acquired brain injuries, learning disabilities and mental health conditions. Twenty trees have been planted and a new orchard has been created at the Bedworth Community Garden in the Miners Welfare Park, Bedworth.

Eminent horticulturalist dies

Mark Flanagan, who looked after The Queen’s gardens for 20 years, has died at the age of 56. He was the keeper of the gardens at Windsor Great Park and was responsible for the management of the world-renowned Savill and Valley Gardens as well as the private garden at Frogmore House.

Mervyn Davies, chairman of the Garden Bridge Trust, said: “We are delighted to move forward with the project. We have been hugely successful in our efforts to raise funds from the private sector, with £85m pledged to date, and we have agreed that any of the committed funds from TfL spent over the £10m will be treated as a loan.” www.gardenbridge.london

Association NEWS RHS report RHS Garden Bridgewater

The Royal Horticultural Society has unveiled plans to create a stunning new 156 acre RHS Garden in the historic grounds of Worsley New Hall in Salford. RHS Garden Bridgewater is planned to open in 2019 as part of the society’s wider ten year £100m+ investment programme intended to achieve its vision of enriching everyone’s life through plants and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place. RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 (24-28 May) preview Show gardens Among the highlights this year is multi-award-winning designer Cleve West’s return with a garden inspired by a memory of the ancient oak woodland on Exmoor National Park, where he spent his teenage years. TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin, who won Gold with a multi-tiered garden in

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Association news page 13.indd 13

2011, presents The British Eccentrics Garden. Diarmuid was inspired by the inventions of some the UK’s most imaginative minds such as the cartoonist William Heath Robinson, known for his drawings of ridiculously complicated machines that achieve simple objectives. Diarmuid has designed a beautifully gentle garden of terraces and topiary complete with octagonal folly and a sunken Italianate pond. As the garden of an eccentric however, this peace is designed to be disturbed and box balls set amid the floral drifts begin to bob up and down, conical bay trees begin to twirl and colourful

planting rises from the ground to dress the first floor windows. Having won Gold in 2015, Chris Beardshaw returns to RHS Chelsea with a garden that will be rebuilt at the heart of Great Ormond Street Hospital after the show. Another 2015 Gold medal winner, James Basson returns with L’Occitane Garden; Jo Thompson has designed The Chelsea Barracks Garden, and RHS Young Designer of the Year 2010 Hugo Bugg is back with the Royal Bank of Canada Garden. Floral Marquee veteran Rosy Hardy branches out with her first show garden, Forever Freefolk; Andy Sturgeon creates The Telegraph Garden, and Chihori Shibiyama and Tea Yano present The Watahan East and West Garden. Artisan and Fresh Garden highlights Peter Eustance has developed an acoustic Artisan Garden

for disability charity Papworth Trust, inspired by world-famous percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. The garden, which reflects Evelyn’s passion and ability, features an adaptation of the ‘sea music’ produced by the women of the Vanuatu islands who create amazing rhythmic songs with just their hands, water and voices. Other highlights in Fresh and Artisan Garden categories include The World Vision Garden by designer John Warland, which symbolises how unpredictable and vulnerable life is; Sarah Eberle returns with a garden inspired by floating gardens of the silk-weaving region of the Mekong River in Cambodia, and after winning Silver-gilt at last year’s show, John Everiss returns with a garden for Meningitis Now. Floral highlights This year, the Great Pavilion, the jewel in RHS Chelsea’s crown, welcomes Bowdens to its central monument, as the multi-award-winning British nursery takes the largest space at the show with a 6,000ft2 planted-up train station. An 80ft long carriage from the refurbished 1920s-style Belmond British Pullman (the sister train to The Orient Express) with liveried stewards, linen and crockery will make up the centrepiece. APL Paving Masterclass The first of the APL masterclasses took place from 26-30 October, hosted by North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in Nuneaton. The masterclasses saw seven young landscapers enter a five day intensive paving course run by Jody and Tim Lidgard from The Landscapes Skills Academy, both of whom are experts in the landscaping field. Overall six companies were involved – Hambrook Landscapes, PA Spittles

APL update Landscapes, Earthstone Landscapes, Bespoke Outdoor Spaces, Oakley Landscapes and Rowland George Gardens. The aim of the workshops is to increase the skills of young landscapers and so improve the landscaping industry. “It’s a skill area where the industry is lacking,” said Jody. The training was tailored to cater for a range of skills and experience, from the beginner to advanced skills sets such as working with high-end stone.

VIEW FROM THE TOP The new ‘National Living Wage’ is not as simple as giving low paid workers a pay rise, says Phil Jones

There are only a few months left until we will be required to introduce the National Living Wage (NLW) of £7.20 per hour to a number of our staff over the age of 25. I support this move as I am all for finding ways to improve the pay and conditions of workers in the landscape industry given that for the majority, these tend to be poor in comparison with many other manual jobs. I have seen the NLW referred to as a government enforced pay rise, which I guess it is really.

IT IS A MEANS OF THE CHANCELLOR CUTTING WELFARE PAYMENTS AND PLACING THE BURDEN OF REPLACING LOWLY PAID WORKERS’ LOST INCOME ON EMPLOYERS The reasons for introducing the living wage given by the government are to make work pay and to ensure people get an adequate income from the work they do rather than by having their low pay topped up by the government. In effect it is a means of the chancellor cutting welfare payments and placing the burden of replacing lowly paid workers’ lost income on employers. I do not disagree that it may be better for people to earn money rather than receive it in benefits for a number of reasons, not least their self-esteem. However, the proposed mechanism is not as straightforward as the government intended it to be. As the NLW is to be implemented for those above the age of 25, we cannot be sure 16

Pro Landscaper / December 2015

View From The Top.indd 16

that it will effectively target the lowly paid and those stuck in the benefits trap that it is intended to help. Add to this The Office for Budget Responsibility’s (OBR) conclusion that 40% of those who will gain from the NLW are in families that are already doing reasonably well because their combined family income is in the top half of all households. The OBR also says that the Living Wage will not be high enough to compensate most low-income households for loss of benefits. Household circumstances differ considerably, based on the number of children, social and care needs, disability, local rent levels etc. Whilst taking account of the reasoning behind such a move and the implications of the introduction of the NLW, as employers we must address how it is to be funded. Once again, I am all in favour of raising the pay of our staff. I have absolutely no doubt that all those who have the power to raise their employees’ pay would have done so by now if they could. That pay is at its current rates, (ignoring the odd exception for a moment), means that there is a very good reason for it being so. That reason is market forces. What we pay our staff is directly related to what our customers pay us for the work we carry out. Who should pay for this rise in our costs? We have no time for long term planning, finding efficiency savings, talking to our

customers and, very importantly, raising our prices for new tenders. Few public sector contracts allow for contractors to pass on such an increase in costs to their customers. In the current climate, with the state of the public sector finances and level of competition for new projects and contracts, we are unable to pass costs on to our customers. This may lead to a reduction in staffing levels and a downturn in service standards. At worst, it could mean that many companies are forced out of business. None of these options will do anything for the reputation of our industry and more importantly for the standard of living of our employees.

A BLINKERED VIEW Andrew Wilson bemoans the blinkered view that many architects seem to share when they work with garden designers and landscape architects on domestic schemes. I’ve had a bit of a moan about architects before on these pages but I couldn’t help returning to my theme with a bit of bah humbug to get into the seasonal spirit. I’m not ranting about all architects here as some have seen how working closely with garden designers is of mutual benefit in developing schemes that are stronger and more coherent as a result. For those architects not used to sharing the limelight or realising that other professionals might have valid opinions and working methods, this is for you. Garden and landscape designers don’t just know about plants. I graduated in landscape architecture more than 30 years ago and have worked with many architects over the last three decades, hoping this patronising attitude might change – that

THIS IS NOT PER SE A DESIGN RANT BUT ONE WHICH HAS FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR THE LANDSCAPER AND THE CONTRACTS THEY ARE INVITED TO CONSIDER during their education someone might just stand up and explain how things are. But as a generation of young and progressive architects crosses our paths at the studio, it seems that little has changed. This is not a design rant per se but one which has financial implications for the landscaper and the contracts they are invited to consider. As we get to the point in project development at which the various aspects of a scheme are prepared for tender, we get the same old chestnut raising its head. Architect: “We would like to take the groundworks and construction into the main contract as we think this streamlines the works.” www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Andrew Wilson.indd 17

Client: “Oh, OK. That seems to make sense.” Garden designer (to architect): “I think I might just have to kill you.” Obviously the garden designer’s response is generally much more diplomatic than this but the architect’s statement assumes the following: a) That the garden designer only knows about plants b) That the landscaper only knows how to plant and might perhaps know about soil too c) That this approach might somehow help things along. Fundamentally, if the architect’s proposal is accepted then there is virtually no scheme for us to discuss with our landscapers. The overall design is rendered a planting only scheme and therefore a much lower cost proposition. Secondly, we as designers lose a substantial amount of quality control as we are asked to work with a building contractor we have never used before and, perhaps more importantly, with a contractor who is not used to garden build. And so I make a plea to all architects. Please respect the skill and knowledge base of the garden and landscape designers with whom you work on shared schemes. Please respect the skills and capabilities, not to mention the

experience of the landscapers proposed by the garden designers with whom you work. Please do not take all hard works under your control and please work within the skills base that you and your contractors share. More than anything else, please do not discuss these possibilities without prior warning in meetings at which the client is present. If you think this is an overreaction, we have experienced three new schemes this year in which these proposals have all been tabled by architects. Happily, our clients have agreed with our point of view in each case. We have even had an architectural technician sending us his setting out drawing for one of our own gardens on the assumption that it was his remit (and perhaps even assuming that we might not know how to produce one). Needless to say it was completely incorrect and binned immediately.

I’m a landscape gardener.

OPINION

???

That sounds amazing!

WHAT’S IN A

NAME? Are we selling ourselves short as landscapers? David Dodd questions whether the general public understands or values what a landscape gardener does I had a very nice lunch a few weeks ago with Nigel Bowcock from Acre Landscapes to discuss a strategic plan for education and training in landscaping and how we can promote the industry to the next generation. That’s for another issue. The reason I mention it is because Nigel asked me in passing how I described myself. Well I know what a lot of other people call me, but on this occasion he was referring to my job title. We’ve all been in that slightly awkward dinner party situation where the stranger sitting next to you asks: “And what do you do for a living?” You instantly feel a bit judged and momentarily wonder if you’re even worthy of being a guest at the table. My answer is always: “A landscape gardener.” On one occasion when I answered as such, this pompous, duller than dull property developer very loudly informed the table about how well gardeners can do these days. In fact, one of his neighbours paid his gardener £15 an hour. Everyone smiled at me politely and I even had a few offers to cut some grass and dig out an old conifer. Not only did I feel patronised, but 18

Pro Landscaper / December 2015

David Dodd.indd 18

I was also left questioning whether or not I was embarrassed of what I did, or simply using the wrong job title. I could use one of many titles – landscape contractor, managing director, business owner, designer, lecturer (PGCertEd qualified - although this doesn’t seem to be a requirement for most courses these days). I often hear designers use the term hard landscaper, which I assume means they’re referring to someone who’s good at walls and paving but couldn’t be trusted with anything that’s remotely green. So why don’t I use any of these grand titles? Yes I’m all of the above, but the simple reason I use landscape gardener is because it best describes what I do. My company landscapes gardens. It’s a title I’m very proud of and landscaping is a great and very honourable profession with a huge amount of variety. When I retire, I intend to get myself a small maintenance round cutting grass, weeding beds, planting and pruning. Why? Because I love gardening. On my way home from the dinner party, which was soon after my new bezzie mate the property developer described the bottle of ’98 Fleur de Bouard I’d brought along as a nice drop of plonk, I began to realise how many people don’t have a clue what a landscape gardener is. Why is this? And more to the point, why is landscaping sometimes seen as a second rate occupation? Over the years, how

many of us have been nicknamed Percy Thrower or Alan Titchmarsh when we tell people what we do? I know I have. I still see one of the problems as being that we’re just not very good at promoting landscape gardening to the general public as a profession. The biggest stage where this could be achieved would probably be Chelsea, but alas the RHS and the BBC are still happy to leave the public with the perception that the designers create their gardens single-handedly. We are getting better and hopefully if we can get into more school and college careers evenings to promote landscape gardening to the next generation, we can create greater public awareness of what we do and that it is a serious profession to be regarded with the high esteem and respect it deserves. Finally, I’d like to wish everyone a very merry and peaceful Christmas, and go on, give your staff a bonus! ABOUT DAVID DODD David Dodd has been in the landscape industry since the age of 17. After having studied and then taught at Merrist Wood College, he set up The Outdoor Room in 1995. In 2013, he went into business with Landscape Architect, Joe Perkins to form Longview Design Ltd. OPINION

Once in a while an idea comes along that is so elegantly simple it seems incredible that no one had thought of it before. The Peckham Coal Line is such an idea says Lesley Malone Plans to transform a disused railway siding in the centre of Peckham, south London, into a new green space are underway. The design takes New York’s High Line and the Paris Promenade Plantée as inspiration but has a uniquely Peckham character of its own. The 1km long elevated linear park would create a connection between Peckham town centre and the isolated but rapidly developing Queens Road area whilst bringing some much needed greenery and calm to a stressful urban environment. Passing above railscapes, Victorian industrial architecture, back streets and council estates, the route offers a peaceful alternative to the traffic-choked streets for cyclists and pedestrians, with great views and invaluable breathing space. Peckham has severe and enduring levels of deprivation that make it one of the poorest areas in the country. And it undoubtedly has an image problem, no thanks to a certain Eighties sitcom and more recently, the 2012 riots. Rye Lane, Peckham’s central thoroughfare and a thriving shopping area, is not your typical high street. The narrow pavements are piled with crates of fruit and veg from the open-fronted shops; the noise of meat saws, music and traffic can be deafening; the smells overwhelming; the

crush and the rubbish maddening, and the air quality awful. Naming the project The Coal Line recognises the area’s grimy past – and present – as a centre of manufacture and toil. It doesn’t attempt to sound pretty or natural, and nor should it. The plan celebrates this heritage, not only making the most of the vegetation that thrives along the disused railway, but incorporating the industrial fabric of wood, iron and brick into the landscape design. The project grows out of the existing landscape and enhances what is already there while creating a beautiful and functional space for the local community to take pride in. Not only would it link disconnected local areas severed by railway lines and busy roads, it would also connect with established cycle networks and

THE ROUTE OFFERS A PEACEFUL ALTERNATIVE TO THE TRAFFIC-CHOKED STREETS FOR CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS, WITH GREAT VIEWS AND INVALUABLE BREATHING SPACE green routes and all at a cost of only £2m. This is joined-up landscape thinking at its best. The project has crowdfunded to commission a landscape architect to undertake a feasibility study. Network Rail, the major landowner on the proposed route, and the local authority are in favour of the scheme. Even the Mayor of London has backed it with a donation.

THE COAL LINE

Guided walks along the route have attracted hundreds of people and there is now a real buzz about the project – a bold, elegant yet inexpensive plan which surely must now happen. To me this represents regeneration in its real sense of revitalisation and renewal. The idea was born of local knowledge and developed by local people drawing on their own skills and inherent understanding of what the area needs and what will work. It breathes new life into a functional historic infrastructure, giving it a valuable use while working with the existing landscape rather than airlifting in a shiny brand new design. It is not about gentrification, commercial gain or retail opportunities and it is not a get-rich-quick scheme for developers. It is a beautiful new public space that everyone in the local community can use and enjoy for free. Go to peckhamcoalline.strikingly.com to find out more or follow @PeckhamCoalLine on Twitter.

OPINION White van man has an image problem and it will require a concerted effort by those of us who drive these vehicles to clean it up, says Angus Lindsay Around 18 months ago I wrote an article entitled “Right Van Man” looking at the role of the workhorse that is the 3.5t truck and how current/ future legislation affects its day-to-day use. Last month I attended a workshop hosted by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and the FTA (Freight Transport Association). The aim of the workshop was to gather opinion from operators, law enforcement agencies and sector partners in order to gain a better understanding of the day-to-day issues faced and how through sharing information we could create a safer and more secure environment to travel, work and operate in – a big ask for a six hour workshop. The event was attended by a cross section of users including delivery companies, utilities organisations, emergency services, construction, security firms and communications companies. All of these are reliant on the 3.5t truck and are suffering the same issues of theft, driver retention, rising insurance costs and traffic congestion. At this point it is worth mentioning that on the issue of theft, be it of whole vehicles, catalytic convertors or the contents of the vehicle, there was only one industry group – the delivery industry – that had formed a working group to share information on incidents and individuals in an effort to reduce the economic drain on their businesses. This got me thinking. We too suffer from the same blight, be it the opportunist removal of a strimmer from the back of a truck, the theft of the truck itself or a preordained raid on a yard full

A PARTNERSHIP APPROACH of fencing material. Could there be mileage in having an industry based portal into which these thefts could be reported to a wider audience of end users, suppliers and support services. Is there an opportunity for Pro Landscaper here?

Smart motorways are watching you!

With the light commercial vehicle the subject of discussion, it was inevitable the phrase white van man would get ample use and there were plenty of video clips to show the worst offenders. The thing that came to the forefront of all discussions was the perception of the van driver and the need to raise the professionalism of this role. Ask any of your staff who drive vans what their job is and I’m sure most of them will say groundsman, arborist, landscaper, machine operator and the like. Very few will say driver, yet they use the vehicle on a daily basis so why not train them to use it safely and legally? With the imminent change to MOTs after four years, it is even more important that we operate and maintain our vehicles to the highest standards. Independent accreditation from bodies such as FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) and the FTA has gone a long way towards raising standards and can potentially lower insurance premiums. Interestingly the presentation by Highways

England was also based on improving vehicle roadworthiness by using the technology in the new generation of smart motorways to monitor vehicle breakdowns, overloading and traffic offences and reporting the persistent offenders to the relevant authorities. You have been warned! So was six hours in the company of West Midlands Police worthwhile? Definitely. They brought together like-minded people in a spirit of cooperation and sharing of experiences to openly discuss the issues affecting their businesses. Will anything come of it? I certainly hope so. The enthusiasm on the day seemed to indicate that there is an appetite for change but it does rely on those of us operating light commercial vehicles to raise our game in order to make poor vehicle operation socially unacceptable. Those operating heavy goods vehicles can do it, so why not white van man?

Consider accreditation, it could save you money and raise your profile

RETURN OF THE MODEL MAKER Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens at cinemas in December and there is much interest in how it will perform in comparison with both the original films and the prequels made in the early 2000s. The latter failed to capture the magic of the originals – they were heavily reliant on CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and lacked believable handmade models, not to mention a strong narrative. I applaud the decision to go back to basics in the new films by hiring a puppet master and using handmade props, stages and costumes along with models of the dramatic landscapes. Star Wars isn’t the only space adventure to shy away from a dependency on CGI. The BBC’s 1970 children’s programme The Clangers has been reimagined for a whole new audience and despite the development of CGI, stayed faithful to the original by using hand crafted models and traditional stop-motion animation.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Landscape architect Adam White explains why handmade scale models will always have a place in landscape design

©Lucasfilm Ltd

At Davies White we embrace all that is good with CGI and often work with computer generated images. However, as much as CGI plays an important role in the design process, it should only ever be used as a condiment and not the main course. No one ever orders a plate of mustard. Our practice is still very much old school. We employ a variety of tools and models are always one of them. Hand drawn sketches kick-start the design process. We make handmade scale models to create early 3D visuals and then fully rendered models for public presentations. We believe a hand-cut, hand-glued, physical model possesses an undeniable quality and there is no better medium to aid design development and communicate design ideas. Despite the time and effort involved, we still find hand-built physical models to be a valuable step in our process because they are: ● A problem solving, process revealing step As a tactile object, the hand-built model is immensely useful in demonstrating the feasibility of a project. It allows the project team (designer, contractor and client) to see massings, features and details on full display.

● An effective communicator of design

Whether you’re a landscape architect, a client, or an end user, tangible models are immediately understandable. They prove popular with blind people, who use their hands and feel their way through the space, and young children and the elderly, who do not use computers. ● A lasting physical representation A final scale model conveys hard information about the proposed landscape and a sense of what it will feel like. A well-made model not only informs but often delights and even long after a project is complete, models continue to pique interest among friends and office visitors. BUSINESS TIPS

TEST DRIVE! Customers love to try before they buy – you need to create an emotional attachment to your product or service in them. Steve Clarke explains how to define your business in your customers’ minds When did you last buy a car? Consider for a moment your decision making criteria and the process you went through. What helped you, what hindered you and what was your motivation along the way? Whether you sell a service, a product or both, regardless of whether it’s to consumer or trade, there are many similarities between your business and a car sales showroom. I’m sorry, I’m sure you don’t see your business in the same vein as a car sales operation – almost certainly not a grungy little one under the railway arches. It’s OK, there’s good news. You get to choose whether you’re selling Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford, Fiat or second hand clunkers under the arches. What do you think the experience you deliver when your prospects engage with you is? Where do you sit on the Rolls Royce to clunker spectrum? Now here’s a question. How would your clients answer that for you? How do you think they view your company, your products and services and why? What does your brand stand for? I don’t 24

Pro Landscaper / December 2015

Steve Clarke.indd 24

mean what your logo, company colours or website look like. I mean does every action and interaction you have with clients, prospects, suppliers and staff reflect the brand values you want to be known for? How clean do you think the showroom floor is at a Rolls Royce dealership? How are their staff dressed in the showroom, the office and the workshop? How do they treat you? How pristine are their products, their brochure and how clean are their toilets and kitchen?

DOES EVERY ACTION AND INTERACTION YOU HAVE WITH CLIENTS, PROSPECTS, SUPPLIERS AND STAFF REFLECT THE BRAND VALUES YOU WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR? So let’s come back to the idea of the test drive. All car dealers will offer a test drive – a try before you buy. Why? For any number of reasons. You may be a landscape architect, garden designer or a fencing supplier, but do you or could you offer a test drive – a way to sample what’s on offer and to connect with your prospects? For sure the petrol heads will want to know the technical ins and outs. They will want to know about torque and gear ratios and all that under the bonnet stuff. You may have some of

them in your world too. But the primary reason is to get the prospect emotionally attached to the product – to help you to create a want. They certainly do this at one end of the scale – the higher end dealers want to invite you to experience being part of their brand. At the other end it’s all about haggling on a price. So where are you? ● What does your range of products and services consist of? ● Do you offer a test drive or a way of sampling what you are about? ● What is your entry level product or service? ● Now what are your core products – the best sellers that sum up what you’re about? These should be an area you are the leader in. ● And then your premium products and services, your top of the line? ● Finally, what is your premium plus, your most exclusive line? Around 20% of your customers would pay 20% more for your highest end product. The chances are you haven’t got it yet. Seaside gardening is no bed of roses with harsh conditions and conflicting objectives. Janine Pattison advises on how to mitigate the worst effects of the sea Designing and building gardens on the coast brings with it a whole range of challenges. The combination of incessant wind, salt spray and sand makes life difficult for both hard landscaping materials and the plants. At my Coastal Planting Masterclass at Palmstead Nurseries in June of this year we explored the best trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials for coastal sites and it was fascinating to share our experiences of success and failure. What came across very strongly was that it is vital to select the right plant for the right place and then make every effort with the ground preparation and aftercare so that the plants can establish quickly and survive.

THE COMBINATION OF INCESSANT WIND, SALT SPRAY AND SAND MAKES LIFE DIFFICULT FOR BOTH HARD LANDSCAPING MATERIALS AND THE PLANTS The biggest conflict in seaside gardens is usually between creating shelter and not ruining the view. The reason your client has chosen to live there is because of the location and they will not want to have the sea views taken away by fencing, trees or big hedges. Creating shelter is usually the first thing that needs to be addressed. Solid structures like fences, especially timber panel or close board are likely to have quite short lives in these locations. They act like sails and can catch the full force of the wind. Even well concreted in posts can be pushed over, especially if the ground is sandy as many coastal sites are. A hedge will often be a better solution as it will filter the wind and slow it down. This avoids the vortex effect that can be www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Janine Pattison.indd 25

COASTAL CONDITIONS created behind a solid boundary like a fence or wall. We often use a combination of steel mesh or chain link fence with a hedge to create a ‘fedge’. This gives security, contains dogs and children, looks good and by the time the fence fails the hedge will be established and it may not need to be replaced. There are obvious wildlife benefits for using hedging rather than fences too. If a fence is needed then consider a slatted or ‘hit and miss’ type fence as these also slow the wind down. Mesh shade netting can be used as a temporary shelter belt while plants establish and can be removed after two or three years. Other structures need to be constructed with the wind in mind too. Sheds and summerhouses can be blown off their bases by winter gales so consider putting in ground anchors to keep them secure. Raised decking should have posts well concreted into the ground to prevent movement. Hard materials like decking and paving will take a pounding from the coastal

conditions and it is worth checking with the supplier that your preferred materials can cope with these demands. Bear in mind anything made from or containing ferrous metals will rust in the salty sea air. Specs of iron in paving or the sand used for mortaring will cause rust stains. All fittings need to be marine grade stainless steel (316) or their life will be very short. Your plant choices must be carefully considered to find plants that can survive and thrive in the conditions. Why not go to the Palmstead Nurseries website (www.palmstead.co.uk) and download the planting suggestions handout I prepared for my masterclass. It is free and will be very useful the next time you have to create a planting plan for a coastal garden. ABOUT JANINE PATTISON Janine Pattison MSGD is a multi award-winning

LIGHT MY WAY

TECHNICAL

As winter approaches, proper illumination of walkways is important from a safety as well as aesthetic point of view. Robert Webber outlines some of the options

It’s the time of year when we start to believe we are nocturnal animals! It’s dark when we leave the house and dark when we get home. Getting to and from the car becomes an assault course, especially when you have two apple trees dropping their bombs on you plus dogs’ toys and kids’ footballs. Effective and reliable path lighting becomes your guide through the jungle. Not so long ago, path lighting was fairly basic. There wasn’t much choice of fittings and styles. Bollards or lampposts were the only way of raising the light source over the path. In the last five years both technology and design has enabled solutions to suit most tastes and architectural requirements. Path lighting can take many forms, from traditional Victorian lamp posts to smaller architectural bollards, moon lighting from an adjacent tree or recessed way-finder lights that shine beams of light across a path. As a rule, most downward facing bollards illuminate an area with a radius

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Robert Webber.indd 27

approximately 1.5 times their height. So the light from a 50cm bollard will extend around 75cm from the post, enough to cover a standard width path. To cover a wider area or take a different approach, you can use bollards with angled reflectors to control the projection, emitting light only on one facet or on a certain trajectory. One solution for lighting paths that run alongside a building or planting bed is to highlight the building or planting and use the overspill of light to wash soft light across the path. We often place lights in the gravel strip alongside buildings, as seen in the picture on the left. It’s a great way of highlighting two places from one source, avoiding over-lighting and glare as well as being more cost effective. The majority of front of house path lighting is placed on a timed or PIR (Passive InfraRed) circuit, so it’s always there when you need it. We often use a Light Symphony system and sensors for control. This way we can set the lighting system to 30% capacity after dark, rising to 100% when it senses movement, providing a ‘welcome home’ effect. These same controls can extend to higher level moon lighting when you need that extra brightness to unload the car. Hunza, a lighting manufacturer from New Zealand, makes a fabulous recessed

RULES TO FOLLOW ● Paths are often overlooked when lighting is designed. Functional light should always be No1 on your checklist. ● Think about a simple control system, so lighting levels change as the use requires. ● Be imaginative. There are so many creative ways to use ‘out the box’ solutions. ● Mock up. We continually test new lights and products. Most manufacturers will be happy to send a sample for you to test light levels and colours.

facetted light that we often use. Whether placed in sleepers, a deck or a stone path, the surface is seamless and emanates light across the face of the paving. It’s a great solution when a designer requires virtually zero effect to the visual design, but optimal architectural lighting. Great for any path where disability access is required. It eliminates trip hazards from lighting. ABOUT ROBERT WEBBER Robert Webber is the founder of Scenic Lighting, a specialist exterior lighting company based in Berkshire. INTERVIEW

ROBIN TEMPLAR WILLIAMS This month Pro Landscaper meets renowned garden designer Robin Templar Williams. Working throughout the UK and abroad, Robin has over 35 years of experience in the industry, and over several years has been involved with all the major associations

How long have you been in garden design and landscaping and why did you start? I have been in landscaping directly and indirectly pretty much all of my life – I grew up with it. My father was a landscape contractor from the early Sixties: Williams and Parry. I was often around the yard and occasionally would go out with Dad (on the right is a photograph of the two of us in 1963). Later when my father moved from contracting into design, I guess in the early Seventies up until the point when he retired, I was constantly exposed to design and landscaping. Basically I acquired my initial skills and knowledge by osmosis. I started solely as a designer in 1987/88, prior to that I was out on the tools landscaping from the age of 18 or 19. This followed a stint in southern Spain renovating an old farmhouse, from which I returned with a need to earn a crust. That’s when I took up landscaping. It was second nature to me.

Let's Hear it From.indd 29

Did you go to college? I did go to college – I studied horticulture and also attended a one year diploma course in garden design, successfully qualifying in 1986. I undertook the design course on the suggestion of my father, where I honed and fine-tuned my design skills.

I’VE BEEN IN LANDSCAPING DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY PRETTY MUCH ALL OF MY LIFE – I GREW UP WITH IT

I was still contracting until about 1987/88 after which I took the decision to hang up my waterproofs and muddy boots and sit at a drawing board. I can recall very clearly my first commission – a small front garden in Herefordshire. I found the drawing several years ago and it brought back a few memories. I have since thrown it away and regret that now. What I remember most from the planting design was specifying Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Brilliantissimum’ – wow! Not a plant that would find its way into my schemes nowadays and hasn’t done so for a long time! Pro Landscaper / December 2015 29

INTERVIEW

What were people’s perceptions of garden design in those days? That’s a difficult question to answer. Garden design wasn’t new, but there were fewer designers compared with today and I guess many people would have been unaware of what garden design involved. Today people are better informed via the TV and social media, etc. What does your business look like now? The practice has grown and my work ranges from small domestic courtyards up to large estates, some of which exceed 100 acres. I love the challenge of a large complex site – something to really get my teeth into. My clients are found throughout the UK and internationally, this has included North America, Japan, south east Asia and Europe. Over the last decade or so I have been a frequent visitor to Eastern Europe, mainly the Ukraine, Crimea and Poland. For several years I was a design consultant for a company based in Moscow – interesting days! 1 Formal pool and timber pergola, constructed by Arun Landscapes 2 Swimming pond edge, constructed by Clients Builder. How did the work in Russia come about? I was initially introduced by my old friend Alan Sargent. He was running CPD workshops and seminars in Moscow, which I also became involved in. During one of his first workshops, two representatives of a (still

FOR SEVERAL YEARS I WAS A DESIGN CONSULTANT FOR A COMPANY BASED IN MOSCOW – INTERESTING DAYS! current) client of mine were in the audience and approached Alan to enquire if he could help with a large domestic project in Donetsk. He gracefully backed away and it was suggested that I might be the person who could help them. Since then I’ve worked with this same client on various projects for approaching 12 years, and continue to do so. In terms of UK work, what does that consist of? Our UK work comes in a varying range of sizes and styles. I’ll take on commercial projects if they are interesting enough. Currently there are

over 20 projects on the go in various stages of the design and implementation process. Do you have a design team? Yes, I have a very tight, skilled and dedicated in-house team. When we are up against it I bring in other designers on a freelance basis. I outsource all of the surveying, structural engineering and lighting/ electrical design. Do you have a network of preferred contractors? I tend to work with a select few companies who I’m comfortable with and can confidently introduce to my clients. Some of these contractors are BALI or APL members, but some are not. These tend to be the smaller companies more suited to local projects. If a project is out of my area, I’ll call other designers I know in that area for their recommendations. In terms of choosing contractors, do you recommend them to the client or do you tender? I recommend to the client that they should approach at least three landscape contractors to obtain competitive quotations for their project. Would you generally revisit projects? If commissioned to or requested, garden visits www.prolandscapermagazine.com

You’re also involved in education? Down the years I have given many talks and workshops both to other professionals and amateurs alike and I continue to do so – I really enjoy it. After completion of the course the vast majority of our students go on to work in the industry. For several years we ran the course in let this go due to the pressure of time and other work commitments. I miss my US fix, and the air miles! We did look at setting it up again recently but common sense prevailed. How much time do you spend awards judging and how did you get involved in it? This is a commitment which takes up a lot of my time and I absolutely love it. I am

reasons and it has to be said that its adjudication process is now as good, and equal to, other organisations. We are now where we are and BALI continues to develop its designer membership. Without getting into the nuts and bolts of it, BALI and SGD have different things to offer their respective memberships – a large number of whom are members of both bodies. As well as my commitment to BALI, I am passionate about the SGD and was actively involved for a long time, sitting on the council for seven years and chairing the adjudication and forums for five years as well as a number of additional responsibilities. I have been a member of the SGD for 28 years.

I am also part of the judging panel for APL but the time commitment there is not quite so onerous, less than a week. I became involved with the BALI awards at some point during my four

Have you had any involvement in show gardens? I’ve designed my fair share down the years and done quite well being awarded numerous RHS medals which have included several Gold medals. Additionally, my work has received awards and recognition from BALI and APL. My first show garden was at Hampton Court in approximately 1990 and my last was Chelsea 2007! I have no current plans to return to the show arena, but you never know.

his contemporary garden design was commissioned in 2014 for a client in Caledonian Road, central London. The client wanted to transform her overgrown jungle of a garden into a highly stylised space that made a bold statement. The brief was to mirror the eclectic interior in the garden and to redefine the whole space in three distinct areas reflecting different moods and occasions and to track the moving sunlight throughout the day. An enticing runway path was introduced to draw the residents from the main dining patio,

between two still, contemporary Japanese ponds, past a central reading area with a rust finished bowl planter as its focal point, and onwards to a raised chill-out/cocktail area at the rear of the garden. The raised rear patio has bespoke Danish-style benches and a table with Japanese inspired cedar screens on either side to create a more intimate space. The somewhat architectural planting scheme was devised to make a bold design statement whilst tending towards the unusual. It is a very sensory space with heady wafts of honey scents throughout the summer. To ensure all the elements tied together, a blue, black and rust colour thread was introduced throughout the space, incorporating the cyan Fifties retro

Challenges The garden was a particularly odd shape and so the transition from main patio to the long, tapering part of the garden was a major consideration. The client was concerned that she might not make the journey to the end of the garden unless it was particularly enticing. To this end, the patio was raised in the manner of a podium, two screens were designed on either side to give the feeling of a private space and modern Danish-inspired furniture was commissioned for the added wow factor. A quiet tucked-away area was incorporated to both break the garden up and as a place to hideaway without any prying eyes.

EMERALD CITY INDOOR GARDEN DESIGN

Indoor Garden Design talks us through its 2014 Christmas installations at Marriott Hotels, which marked the 75th anniversary of the original Wizard of Oz film

efig Awards 2015 Christmas Design and Installation Gold Leaf

ndoor Garden Design has worked with the Marriott group of hotels for the past two Christmases and we were delighted to win an efig Award last year for our Christmas installations at the five top London hotels in the group. In 2014 we wanted to do something even more festive and fabulous. Marriott Hotels is an amazing client to work with, they really encourage creative flair and have vision. Our creative concept was a Wizard of Oz theme – this classic Christmas film was being re-released on DVD to commemorate its 75th anniversary. The project was a joint collaboration between the Marriott Hotel Group and Warner Brothers (the film’s owner, and another of Indoor Garden Design’s clients) with extensive promotional activity and competitions around a #NoPlaceLikeMarriott tagline. We were responsible for bringing the #NoPlaceLikeMarriott message to life at each of the participating group hotels and working with them to realise the theme in unique ways, which would represent their particular décor and clientele. Each hotel display showed the film on a screen for guests to enjoy throughout the festive season. The creative concept There was an abundance of iconic elements associated with this much-loved film, such as the Emerald City, the yellow brick road and Dorothy’s ruby slippers. The creative challenge was to bring the concept to life in all ten hotels across London, each with its own different style. Indoor Garden Design worked closely with each hotel to create a bespoke display. Red, silver and green ribbons printed with the #NoPlaceLikeMarriott tagline were used in bows to adorn trees and garlands at every hotel, promoting the campaign whatever the colour scheme. The installations Each hotel was unique, from the architectural heritage site of St Pancras Renaissance to the classic Park Lane landmark of the Grosvenor House Hotel, from the modern Docklands West India Quay to the historic County Hall hotel, plus the smaller but no less important hotels around London.

PORTFOLIO ABOUT INDOOR GARDEN DESIGN We had a team of 25 working across the ten hotels for this project, seven of them working on the County Hall hotel installation. The exterior of County Hall features a grass mound turning circle, the ideal setting for a yellow brick road, topped with a giant pair of ruby slippers. After this welcome, guests entered the Emerald City and all the decorations and trees were green-themed. We had seven days to complete all the hotels, two days and nights of which were spent working on County Hall. Here, the ruby slipper was made from polystyrene and wood sprayed with a red glitter paint. Small ruby slippers were made for berries. We used a mix of live and artificial Christmas trees, poinsettias, amaryllis and cut pine and foliage for wreaths and garlands, mosses, cones and thousands of baubles. All the lighting used was LED. The logistics of getting all the work done within the time we had and working around the busy times of the hotels was a challenge, and meant working through the night and early morning.

ON THE WATERFRONT LDA Design and CH2M worked with the Environment Agency and Arun District Council to enhance the public realm along the new River Arun East Bank flood defence scheme in Littlehampton, West Sussex

T

he character of the East Bank is defined by its riverside and coastal setting. The waterfront in Littlehampton is valued for its incredible views, harbour, the beach, shops and cafÊs. Littlehampton relies heavily on tourism which brings employment and economic activity to the town, but with a history of localised flooding and high tides the Environment Agency (EA) and Arun District Council knew action was necessary. The flood defence scheme needed to do more than just reduce the risk of flooding – it had to help regenerate the town, create a high quality waterfront and new destination for residents and visitors, while protecting the 748 residential and 340 commercial properties. Moreover, the existing public realm along the East Bank was degraded and cluttered without reflecting its unique and distinctive natural setting. 1 Bespoke pebble seating looking out over the beach 2 Kniphofia looking splendid against the Corten steel 3 Bespoke timber seating steps www.prolandscapermagazine.com

flood infrastructure beautiful and seamlessly integrating it with the picturesque views along the River Arun. The project team collaborated to ensure that the necessary technical requirements were in place, but that they were sensitively incorporated, prioritising pedestrians and providing new seating and walkways, while ensuring views along the River Arun were not interrupted. Materials A number of robust materials were chosen to improve the longevity of the scheme, minimising future maintenance and ensuring the scheme could withstand the harsh seafront climate. Modified timber, a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, was used throughout, alongside concrete that uses a local aggregate for walls, steps and paving. The waterfront balustrade and handrails to steps and ramps use Ferrocast, an engineering grade polymer cast around a steel core to minimise rusting. A number of ‘pebble’ seats were designed in 3D and cast in decorative concrete for the scheme; these were modelled from existing pebbles found on the beach and integrate a more playful element. In planting areas a distinctive orange, low Corten steel wall was used to co-ordinate with other elements along the seafront such as the award-winning East Beach Café. Planting All of the planting used within the scheme was specifically chosen to withstand the coastal environment. Working with a project ecologist from CH2M the planting is aimed to introduce biodiversity and benefits for wildlife, while also requiring minimal maintenance by employing a self-sustaining ethos. The mix of plants was selected from those growing naturally in the area, alongside ornamental plants to add year-round interest and colour. The East Bank flood defence scheme now has a one in 300 year (0.33%) standard, which will protect 1,915 residential and 526 commercial properties by 2110, and has transformed the East Bank into a wellconnected, high quality and enjoyable waterfront that also contributes to the sustainability of the thriving marine activity within the harbour. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

With the amenity and landscaping sectors busy planting, we are in full swing lifting, grading and preparing field grown trees and transplants for customer orders. Short lead times mean planning and preparation are key. Many lines are now lifted and graded, pre-ordering and root plunged, ready for collating when required. Our specialist tree growers have selected and prepared crops to be potted in large containers and 25-75L easy-lift bags. This ensures we have a constant supply of trees and hedging all year round. The container ground, which produces our smaller 2-10L crops, is following well established winter protection and housekeeping routines. The potting shed is being prepared for the start of a long season, beginning with the bare root hedging, shrubs and herbaceous in early January. Looking ahead, the excellent harvest of native seeds, including the Quercus we collected in October, is now tucked away in the cold store for stratification. When we get them out in the spring they should be primed ready for rapid germination. www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk

PLANTSMAN’S PLOT

A round-up of trees and plants available at some of the country’s best nurseries To appear in Plantsman’s Plot, please send your plant of the month, details and image to fay.tate@pro-landscaper.com

Best for: elegant winter flowers The Helleborus niger ‘Christmas Carol’ often flowers at Christmas and reaches a height of 40cm. It flowers a pure white that will last all through the winter months adding a splash of class and elegance to any container display or planting design. The perfect white flowers contrast with the bold, dark green foliage and require minimal maintenance. It is best planted in rich, welldrained soil and sheltered from cold winds. www.hortusloci.co.uk

Best for: fragrance Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’ is renowned for its highly fragrant pinkish-white flowers on bare stems with toothed dark green leaves that turn reddish in autumn. This deciduous shrub can be seen in flower at any time between November and March and is perfect for winter walks. It is best positioned adjacent to paths and doorways to achieve maximum benefit from its beautiful scent. It can grow up to 3x1.5m and thrive almost anywhere but is best suited for a moist, well-drained border. www.gavinjonesdreamgardens.co.uk

Best for: stand-out bark

Acer griseum (paperback maple) is a show stopper in a courtyard and can add stunning structure in a border. It is a small spreading deciduous tree with deeply cut maplelike leaves that turn orange and scarlet in autumn. Year round interest is guaranteed by its warm cinnamon peeling bark which appears translucent in winter’s watery sun. This slowly growing tree can grow up to 20m tall but it is often smaller. www.hilliertrees.co.uk

Best for: attracting wildlife The Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) has bark that is deeply scaled with a dark grey on the lower trunk and flakier, orange/brown patches higher up. The long, blue-green needles grow in pairs and the iconic, egg shaped cones start green and age brown. Scots pine is suitable for planting individually as a specimen or in groups. It is a fantastic provider for wildlife – birds often feed on and around it and will nest in the branches while the cones and seeds are a delicacy for red squirrels. www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Plantsmans Plot.indd 45

Best for: spring flowers Skimmia japonica ‘Fragrans’ is covered in dense clusters of fragrant white male flowers in April/May, having held the buds tight over the cold winter months. This male clone has dark evergreen leaves forming a rounded dome shaped plant of 1x1m and the scent is reminiscent of lily of the valley. It was originally known as ‘Fragrant Cloud’ and the male clone will require a female Skimmia to be planted close by in order for bright red berries to grow on the female plant. www.provendernurseries.co.uk

Best for: brightening dull corners Variegated hollies provide year round interest and on female varieties during winter, the traditional red berries associated with the season. The insignificant flowers are very attractive to bees and the berries that follow are in fact drupes. Supplied as bushes or spectacular standards these plants are excellent at brightening up a dull area. The standards are particularly suited to a formal setting such as in a pair around a doorway. These hardy evergreen plants are easy to grow, performing best in sunny positions. A number of varieties are available and Ilex aquifolium ‘Aurea Marginata’ is always popular. www.agrumi.co.uk

Ian Drummond gives the lowdown on Christmas trees – their history, meaning and how to decorate and care for them

As the festive season starts to ramp up again, the humble fir, spruce or pine tree, redundant and forgotten for 11 months of the year, is once again hauled from its agricultural plot to become the ultimate symbol of Christmas. Our relationship with this tree goes back long before the advent of Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter and in many countries it was believed that evergreens would ward off evil spirits. The Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnalia by decorating their temples with fir trees in order to please Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture, believing this would ensure a bumper harvest. We can only guess when fir trees were first used as Christmas trees – but it’s likely to have been in northern Europe around 1,000 years ago. In the UK, yew branches were also an early form of Christmas tree but it was in the 1830s that the Christmas tree we know and love today began to be seen in all the smartest drawing rooms. Its branches would have been hung with bunches of sweetmeats, almonds and raisins wrapped in paper, as well as fruits and toys all illuminated by small wax candles – all of which form part of the tradition we enjoy today.

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Ian Drummond.indd 47

TREE TIME Many early Christmas trees are also thought to have been hung upside down from the ceiling using chandelier and lighting hooks – which is ironic given the vogue in our industry today for inverting hanging plants. It will be interesting to see if this trend extends to Christmas trees this year. Personally, I feel decorating the Christmas tree, whether in a corporate or private setting, is a fabulous way of introducing a bit of theatre and sparkle because the creative themes can be so diverse. A personal favourite of mine that isn’t actually in the least bit sparkly, is the natural look – think fresh bulbs and tiny potted herbs adorning the tree. The lovely thing about this look is the range of scents that comes with it – very ‘outdoors in’. Another natural look is to add an array of gorgeously glossy dried fruits alongside cinnamon sticks, whole nutmeg and star anise for a culinary tree that follows a Victorian tradition. At the opposite end of the spectrum, is the clean, clinical corporate look and a lot of fun can be had with this. A strong branded look within a corporate setting is to take a logo and create a decoration around this, incorporating brand colours to create a vivid centrepiece.

Lighting can make or break a look – another style statement that has a strong architectural look is to create a tree without decorations at all, just top quality lighting in the right shade and of the right luminosity for a chic and striking look that’s all over the colour blocking trend too. The success or failure of any design rests on the perfect health of the tree as there is nothing worse than a wilting tree shedding needles and giving off anything but Christmas cheer! There are a few golden rules for keeping your tree healthy: ● Before the tree is installed, cut a couple of inches off the bottom of the trunk before setting in water. When trees are cut, pitch oozes out and seals the pores. By sawing off the base, the pores are opened up and the tree will be able to absorb water. ● Watering is critical. A freshly-cut tree can consume a gallon of water in 24 hours! ● Fill the tree stand with water and keep it filled. ● Never let the water level go below the tree’s base. ● Indoors, keep the tree away from heat sources. In fact, the lower the temperature, the better the tree will do. ABOUT IAN DRUMMOND Ian Drummond is the creative director of Indoor Garden Design, Europe’s leading interior landscape design company. BOOK REVIEW

Before starting out on your next project, seek inspiration and ideas in the latest books by some of the industry’s most experienced gardeners and landscapers.

365 DAYS OF COLOUR IN YOUR GARDEN by Nick Bailey Achieving colour all year round is one of the most challenging aspects of creating and maintaining a garden. Nick Bailey, head gardener at Chelsea Physic Garden has discovered a plant for every season, every sized plot and how to make them flower longer. He shares his findings on how to transform a garden into a year-round kaleidoscope in his new book 365 Days of

Colour in Your Garden. Paired with stunning photography by Jonathan Buckley, Bailey covers everything you need to achieve that wow factor. Starting off by explaining the science of colour and how to grow for colour, he provides an easy-to-read guide to planting throughout each season. So brassica oleracea is best to plant in early winter, correa in mid-winter and prunus mume in late winter. The book offers practical advice on establishment and maintenance, plants for pots and planting for difficult spaces and tiny gardens. No stone is left unturned as Bailey delves into planting to extend the season and playing with shades in daring but imaginative ways. RRP £25 www.kylebooks.com

THE GARDENS OF ARNE MAYNARD by Arne Maynard In his first book devoted entirely to his own work, garden designer Arne Maynard tells us about 12 gardens he has designed including his first garden at Guanock House and his own home, Allt-y-Bella, in rural Wales. Combined with striking photography by William Collinson, Maynard’s creativity jumps off the page. The pictures are a marvel in themselves and his dedication is channelled in the way he writes. Maynard features six sections on things he feels are essential to creating a successful garden, including the use of roses, topiary and kitchen gardens. He highlights the way roses change the texture and scale of a border and says the secret to making a successful kitchen garden is to create

A SLICE OF LIFE by David G Cox David G Cox grew up in the country with a father who was a nurseryman and landscape gardener. In A Slice of Life he shares a number of short stories about the quirky characters his father employed, his friends and their escapades. Be prepared to let out a chuckle at the beginning of the book; David’s story about blowing up a wasp nest while on a job is entertaining and animated. Each story is told with emotion and David paints a striking picture. Offering a realistic insight into some of the difficulties gardeners and landscapers face in their line of work, it’s easy to read and the ideal book for gardeners to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE by John W Dover More than half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas and it is vital that these are healthy places to live. Green Infrastructure provides simplified explanations and solutions to improving the quality of life in urban areas. In eight chapters, John W Dover covers the basics and benefits of green infrastructure, permeable pavements, green walls and roofs, street trees, indoor green infrastructure and policy, regulation and incentives. The 352-page book is informative, clear and coherent. Combined with images and tables of statistics, Dover explains complex ideas and the science of green infrastructure making them understandable and easy to read. Each chapter is broken down into sections and Dover discusses these in depth. It makes for a perfect reference book and the subchapters mean specific information is easy to find.

Burleys purchases new Iveco commercial vehicles South east grounds maintenance contractor Burleys has recently added three Iveco New Daily light commercial vehicles to its fleet.

The seven-seater models will be manned by Burleys operatives on its maintenance contracts, including the Magna Carta

monument next to the River Thames at Runnymede. Supplied by Iveco dealer Hendy Van & Truck in combination with leasing provider Keyvans, the New Daily chassis cabs will join Burleys’ fleet of 140 vehicles. Fitted with a lightweight plant body and beavertail by Solent Bodyworks, Burleys required specialist commercial vehicles designed to transport large machinery and equipment for grounds maintenance operations. www.tclgrp.co.uk/groupbrands/burleys

Trade bodies launch price guide app The AEA (Agricultural Engineers Association) and BAGMA (British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association) have recently collaborated to release the Outdoor Power Equipment electronic price guide. Representing the suppliers and dealership network of the outdoor power, turf care, garden and forestry equipment sectors, the trade associations have joined forces to provide a single pricing guide offering complete functionality to search across all brands for current retail price lists. The Android and iOS compatible app is a combined, digital version of the previous hard copy price guides published independently by each organisation until the end of last year. Inclusion in the guide is free of charge at entry level, with chargeable options available for enhanced listings. To have your company listed or to subscribe to the AEA/BAGMA Outdoor Power Equipment Directory, please contact Kayleigh.holden@aea.uk.com or info@bagma.com. www.aea.uk.com www.bagma.com www.prolandscapermagazine.com

UNDERSTANDING COMMON

OPERATING HAZARDS & LEGISLATION ISSUES

Ian Mitchell gives his top tips on operating hazards and legislation – and this month they go up to 11!

After reading the instruction manual, the next essential step is to recognise the hazards associated with operating machinery and the legislation that covers these operations at work. Of course, in both practical and legislative terms this means completing a risk assessment

4

1

Routine adjustments and settings Are your staff able to safely carry out the adjustments required on their machines? Poor adjustments cost hundreds of pounds per machine each year in additional parts and labour.

The Risk Assessment The law is very clear on the requirement to conduct a risk assessment before starting any activity. Generic assessments should cover most, if not all common hazards, while site specific risk assessments should cover particular hazards and activities in greater detail.

2

Management of Health and Safety at work Regulations Full and sufficient risk assessments must be carried out. Any risk assessment must be up to date – meaning under 12 months old – and should be updated with any major changes that have occurred within that period. It should be easy, but how many risk assessments are never reviewed or updated?

3

Pre-start checks Yes, the basic checks are detailed in the operator’s instruction book, but the PPE requirements may not be. Gloves and eye protection should be worn, as well as safety footwear and non-snag clothing. Is there a checklist for each machine with a sign-off at the bottom to confirm completion? Are daily checks ever audited?

n

5 6

PUWER The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations also requires that all staff receive adequate training on the tools and equipment they use at work. You need evidence that training has been carried out – certificates for LANTRA or NPTC qualifications, or BAGMA Installation records. Any internal training should have a lesson plan or tick sheet, with signatures to confirm that the training has taken place and what it covered.

7

Banks & Slopes All banks and slopes should be measured and the actual working angle recorded. The operator’s instruction book will quote a safe working angle. It’s usually an angle that an experienced operator will easily exceed in favourable conditions, but the same slope in poor conditions or with a less experienced operator still has the potential to be dangerous. This is also where the quality of the operator’s training plays a big part in the performance of the machine. Does the operator know how to set the machine to maximise its stability and traction.

8

PS RO

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

COSHH The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations mean that oily rags, excess grease, spilt fuel or engine oil, hydraulic fluid and coolant all need to be correctly disposed of.

ROPS Frames The ROPS frame is there to protect the operator in the event of an accident. When working, the ROPS frame must be up, unless the site specific risk assessment says otherwise.

Slope mowing

9

Seat belts We don’t drive cars or vans without wearing a seat belt, so why drive mowers or any other machinery without wearing one? As with the ROPS frame, the seat belt is there to protect the operator and must be worn at all times.

10

Cleaning & Maintenance One hour per week (at the very minimum) should be set aside to allow a thorough cleaning and lubrication session. Machines that are covered in mud and grass cannot be correctly maintained. Safety interlocks and OPC systems need to be checked and any worn parts or damage reported to the maintenance department.

11

Road contamination How often does a mower drive off a site leaving a trail of grass and mud behind it? Tractor gangs are particularly prone to this but triple mowers and rotaries can be equally bad. Any loose material must be brushed off before you leave the site, particularly when working in wet or lush conditions. A simple hand brush can make a huge difference and on bigger tractor gangs a blower can be used to clean up before leaving the site. There are quality and safety issues here, which are fairly easy for the operator to address. ABOUT IAN MITCHELL Ian Mitchell has 35 years’ experience in the turf machinery industry. High Five training was set up in 2015 to provide a dedicated groundscare training service to the industry. Email: mitch@highfivetraining.co.uk Tel: 07484 295 296 Pro Landscaper / December 2015 57

WORK

LIFE/STYLE

I absolutely love my job and as

Hugo Bugg

a young graduate in garden design I never imagined that I would be running my own practice so early in my career. It wasn’t initially in my mind to do so, but when I was given the opportunity to design and produce a private garden, it was well

One of Pro Landscaper’s 30 Under 30, Hugo Bugg tells us what makes him tick at work and at play

received and this gave me the confidence to go it alone. I face daily challenges both in terms of design and business management, but I wouldn’t look back and feel incredibly fortunate to be where I am now. Hugo Bugg Landscapes is now in its sixth year of business and I have built up a team of like-minded designers to support me from our base in the heart of Exeter. We oversee a range of projects both nationally and internationally and our ethos is to design diverse, innovative landscapes that promote sustainable, yet beautiful solutions; all undertaken with great attention to detail. I imagine that most people within our industry would associate me with producing show gardens. Whilst demanding, making a show garden is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work and as such, I have a habit of being unable to say no when asked to do one. They have been pivotal in my career, providing a platform to showcase my work and for that I am very grateful. Winning Gold at RHS Chelsea in 2014 has undoubtedly given me a wealth of experience and opportunities. As momentous as RHS Chelsea was for me, one of our current projects, the design of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Jordan, has to be the largest, most demanding design project of my career to date and the one that I am most proud of. It covers an area of 200 acres and rises over 400m in elevation. It’s a really challenging landscape but it’s so fulfilling to overcome the difficulties and see the space transform.

PERSONAL With pressure of work, I have been neglecting my free time of late and in the short term it’s likely to be at a premium, as I will be using it for DIY. I’ve just bought my first house, so I’ll be swapping my computer mouse for a paintbrush most weekends while I renovate. I even bought a chimney sweeping kit at the weekend. I’m learning new skills but it’s hardly rock ‘n’ roll for a 28 year old! When I’m at home with free time, I love to get out onto Dartmoor, walking with my dog or camping with friends. You can’t beat the company of friends around a campfire sinking local Otter Ale, having a laugh and putting the world to rights. I love food, especially eating it, but I do enjoy cooking as well. My kitchen gadget of the moment is my bread maker – there’s nothing better than making a fresh loaf to take into the office. I like to keep fit by cycling and running. I’ve entered my fair share of half marathons and a couple of full ones but I would not recommend running a marathon along the Jurassic Coast with no training, especially if you have a week of tree-tagging straight afterwards. I’m certainly looking forward to a Christmas of sitting still and relaxing this year.

TRAVEL Family holidays as a child were spent either on the north Cornish coast or on my aunt’s farm in the south of France. Our Cornish holidays were a real extended family affair and I have such fond memories. I think they naturally led me back to Cornwall to study garden design in Falmouth. It’s only in recent years that I have started travelling further afield through work and I have been lucky to visit countries such as Jordan, Oman, Hungary, Sicily, Spain and other European destinations. However, as much as I’ve had a fantastic time visiting these countries, they were work related and so there was less time to explore. Added to that, modern technology has a habit of interrupting, so earlier this year I took off on my bike to the south of France and high into the Pyrenees where there was no phone signal. It was a beautiful escape – just me, the bike, a tent, glorious sunshine and awe inspiring views. Despite the hard climbs, it was real relaxation. I have to say I am a true home bird. There really is no place like it and I will never tire of the green Devon countryside. www.prolandscapermagazine.com
