GO CORDLESS:

MAKITA’S INNOVATIVE BATTERY-POWERED GARDEN MACHINERY Makita offers an extensive range of cordless, battery-operated machines to assist landscaping professionals with finding the right tool for them. Here, Mark Earles, Business Development Manager OPE at Makita looks at the benefits of choosing Makita’s cordless machines.

F

or landscaping professionals, ease of operation is a key consideration when choosing a power tool. Although electric tools have their benefits, the power lead can become restricting. In this case, cordless machines are ideal as they provide operators with more flexibility to move around the working area. Makita’s cordless machines are powered by its innovative Lithium-ion battery technology (LXT). With LXT, operators can experience industry-leading run and charge times, for improved productivity on site. LXT batteries also don’t need to be drained before re-charging. A number of Makita’s cordless tools are powered using two 18V LXT batteries – providing increased power and run times. For example, the DUB362Z blower benefits from Makita’s Twin 18V LXT technology, supplying energy to the powerful 36V DC motor drive system. The DUB362Z has been designed to be the most powerful cordless blower on the market. The blower benefits from a maximum air volume of 13.4m3/min and maximum air velocity of 54m/sec. The DUB361Z is also powered by Makita’s Twin 18V LXT batteries – and has been designed with operator comfort and ease of use in mind. This compact tool is lightweight, weighing just 3.2kg. And it also produces low noise emission levels with noise sound pressure at 82.3dB(A) and noise sound power at 94.7dB(A) – which is a key benefit when working at occupied premises. Even when powered by one battery – such as the DUC254Z 18V 250mm Brushless Chainsaw – machines utilising LXT can continue to work at their optimum due to Makita’s clever battery charging technology. Balanced charging ensures that all LXT

Advert Makita template.indd advertorial.indd1 2

batteries are charged evenly across all cells - and on discharging, the charge is drawn out evenly. This results in optimum charging and increased productivity on site, as all cells are used completely. LXT chargers also have built in CPU, which communicates with the battery to assess its condition and optimise charging in line with issues such as battery heating, over discharging or age. Batteries are also kept cool during charging, which enables the fast charge times and optimises battery performance. The DUC254Z also benefits from Makita’s Brushless Motor, which can be up to 50% more efficient and twice as durable as a standard motor. Working with LXT, the inclusion of a Brushless Motor makes for a powerful and durable machine – that is also more environmentally friendly and lower in vibration compared to alternatives. Makita also offers a wide range of cordless hedge trimmers – each designed to ensure that tasks can be completed effortlessly. The DUH601Z and DUH751Z utilise Makita’s new triple-edged cutting teeth – which are designed to easily catch and firmly hold branches. The blades are also curved to reduce friction and resistance – reducing energy loss and increasing run times. Makita’s LXT batteries can be used across the Makita cordless range, which means operators can easily switch between over 200 of Makita’s tools – and adapt to new tasks seamlessly. With Makita’s extensive range of garden machinery products, landscaping professionals can find the tool that suits them and their requirements. s we approach the end of the year, there is one issue dominating our conversations: sustainability. Lowering pollution levels has long been on the agenda for governing bodies. Take the introduction of Stage V regulations for new non-road vehicles limiting particle number emissions, and the Mayor of London replacing the T-Charge with the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Action is being taken to reduce pollution across the UK, but there’s plenty more work to be done. Battery powered kit continues to develop, and the number of companies and local authorities adopting this technology is on the rise. Read more on page 6, where leading industry suppliers discuss the growing trend and how they are ironing out any concerns with battery-based kit going forward. Electric vehicles are also gaining popularity, with more than 30 companies signing up to the global EV100 initiative, which aims to accelerate

the transition to electric eets by 2030, and hopefully push down the price of electric vehicles. Mitie recently signed up, and on page 8 it tells us why switching makes business sense for both large and small companies. The environment isn’t the only concern when it comes to kit, though. Angus Lindsay from idverde says equipment theft is on the rise, and on page 10 we speak to him about some of the methods that contractors can use to deter thieves or track down stolen items. ut how do you choose the kit in the first place? After all, this supplement doesn’t just look at the problems in the industry. It also highlights some of the top equipment on the market, from SPA Power Machinery’s growing innovative range (page 12), to what you can find at two leading trade shows this year – FutureScape and SALTEX. Finally, page 19 and onwards features some of the latest launches too, from brushcutters to wacker plates. Happy reading!

UNBELIEVABLE STRENGTH PLUS UNBEATABLE COMFORT FROM CUB CADET - THE PERFECT COMBINATION FOR PROFESSIONALS

The Cub Cadet PRO Z5 provides market-leading performance and quality with ultimate cutting efficiency. The patented SyncroSteer technology that controls all four wheels minimises the turf being churned by the wheels as it would on a lap bar zero-turn and ensures the ultimate manoeuvrability – an exclusive offering in the commercial sector which reduces mowing time by up to 10% compared to lap bar mowers. It also means that inexperienced operators can easily use the steering wheel and dual hydrostatic transmission effectively. The ability to control all four wheels with a steering wheel and steerable front wheels, sets the PRO Z 5 apart from all other zero-turns, providing greater hillside stability up to 20° and enhanced traction on uneven terrain as well as mowing in straighter lines. The PRO Z5 powers through the thickest grass in one pass at maximum speeds of 10mph meaning you can do the job quicker. The high lift Marbain blades with a blade tip speed up to 18,500 fpm and the 3” total blade overlap will ensure that you always get a tight consistent cut. The frame and axle on the PRO Z5 floats as the machine moves allowing the deck to follow the shape of the terrain and avoids scalping. The commercial grade petrol engine rather than diesel, from Kawasaki, provides the consistent power you need to get the job done and maximise your work-day – reducing the downtime which could cost you both time and money. The petrol engine benefits from having lower emissions and reduced fuel usage. Comfort is at the forefront of the Z5’s design. current developments Sales of battery powered equipment have skyrocketed over recent years. We speak to some key industry suppliers about why this might be and how the technology is continuing to improve to keep up with the demand.

R

ecent years have seen a rise in the popularity of battery powered equipment, especially for local authorities. But why now? Technology has certainly improved, something which has likely both been driven by the demand from customers for battery powered equipment and driven the rise in demand for further improved technology. Due to these developments, products now offer genuinely decent run times and power. Running costs of battery products can also be as little as 5 to 6% of an equivalent 2-stroke engine. Makita has developed its patented battery protection system, a communication technology which ensures there is no danger of overheating. Both the tool and the battery (and the charger) communicate, exchanging data in real time and monitoring conditions during use. This protects against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. The charger is also able to identify the charge of each individual cell. Therefore, if one cell has for some reason discharged more than the others, the charger will

6

Pro Landscaper / Equipment Supplement

Battery powered equipment.indd 6

discharge all the cells to the same level and then charge them all up together, conditioning the battery. Mark Earles, the business development manager OPE from Makita, says: “These technologies together make for balanced and optimum charging, giving our batteries a longer life.”

Running costs of battery products can also be as little as 5-6% of an equivalent 2-stroke engine Les Malin, managing director at Etesia UK suggests the surge in popularity stems from a desire to be environmentally friendly. “TV programmes such as Attenborough’s Planet Earth are opening people’s eyes. We are starting to think more about what we should be doing to save the planet and battery products is a topic that seems to be coming to the forefront of people’s minds now.” Les also says that government, local authorities and contractors are the driving force behind this. It seems customers are also insisting that environmental issues, such as emissions and noise pollution, are met. But why

are these improvements especially beneficial to local authorities? Gateshead Council has been operating hybrid and fully electric vehicles for several years and is now assessing a range of batterypowered equipment, including grass cutters,

strimmers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws. Philip Hindmarsh (above), Gateshead’s interim street scene director, says: “We’ve begun trying out a range of battery powered machines this summer to assess their long-term viability. They are an attractive proposition because we think they are probably cheaper to run than petrolengine machinery and less polluting. They also have the benefit of being much quieter. The Makita DUH751Z 18V hedge trimmer, powered by a single 18V Li-ion battery

Recently, Gateshead Council decided to trial the use of battery powered equipment whilst undertaking maintenance on the busy stretch of the A184 Askew Road. The council has previously been faced with somewhat of a dilemma as, ideally, the work should be carried out in the early hours of a Sunday morning to minimise disruption to the heavy ow of traffic. In previous years, the council had received numerous noise complaints from neighbouring houses. By introducing battery powered equipment this year though, the noise levels were reduced, and work could be carried out without disturbing people’s sleep or the road users. Another huge benefit of battery powered equipment is for hand arm vibration assessments. Users are normally dictated by restrictions of how long they can deal with vibrations before they must stop using the product. Due to the lack of vibrations from battery powered equipment, Gateshead Council often supplies its volunteers with them as well as using them on specialist projects. Although there are a lot of benefits to battery power, it is true that there are still advancements which need to be made before it can fully overtake petrol power. Although Etesia says products such as chainsaws and hedge cutters have very good battery powered alternatives, it admits batteries don’t have enough power for ride on machinery: “Batteries for equipment required for larger cutting and heavier consumption just haven’t got there yet.” Makita agrees, arguing that when higher power consumption is required, petrol units are still preferable. Honda go further than this, claiming that petrol still has the biggest market

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Battery powered equipment.indd 7

share and its new GCVx four-stroke engine is Euro 5 compliant and not only offers more power than batteries but also has improved fuel efficiency and lower noise levels. The next few years may see these aws being ironed out however, with battery power catching up, or even overtaking petrol power completely. Makita is positive that with the way technology is developing, it won’t be long before most equipment will have a suitable battery powered equivalent. Honda will be releasing

the second generation of its battery powered machines very soon, following its successful launch of the first generation in 2016. Etesia is also continually looking to improve its battery powered equipment, making an even bolder commitment by spending very little on developing non-battery powered equipment going forward. The in vogue phrase with suppliers seems to be “watch this space”, and it appears there is certainly a keen market with an eye out for the improvements to come.

Sparking Change Mitie recently made an impressive commitment to switch its entire fleet to electric by 2030. We speak to managing director of Mitie Landscapes, Tim Howell, about the benefits as well as the obstacles it is having to overcome

G

lobal warming is a hotter topic than ever before. As teenage activists take the reins and lead the charge towards sustainability, governments across the globe are having to consider the changes they are able make to slow down the impact of climate change. One of the leading villains is transport. The sector is responsible for 23% of global energyrelated greenhouse gas emissions, according to non profit organisation he limate roup, making it the fastest growing contributor to the environmental crisis. ecause of this, he limate roup launched EV100, an initiative to accelerate the number of companies transitioning to electric vehicles (EV) by 2030 and help drive down the cost of this type of transport. More than 30 companies pledged their support by the end of 2018, a year after the initiative was launched, and that number has since continued to grow.

Facilities management company, Mitie, is one of the most recent signatories. However, thanks to the lower running,

ith our fleet responsible for of our business’ carbon footprint, it was the natural place for us to start in our mission to reduce our environmental impact,” says Tim Howell, managing director of Mitie Landscapes. “We’re proud to be the first in the facilities management sector to have set such an ambitious electric vehicle strategy, but we want others to follow suit. That’s why joining initiatives such as EV100, as well as o ltra ow and the lean an

When we surveyed our drivers, many told us that they are keen to move to an EV and play their part in reducing carbon emissions. e ve found that enthusiastic electric vehicle drivers are our best advocates for spreading the word about EVs.” There are still challenges to adopting EV, though, mainly the lack of charging infrastructure. he limate roup s report says more than two-thirds (71%) of EV100 members cited this as a barrier. In August, the government announced it would be doubling the funding for on-street electric car charging, setting aside an additional £2.5m for charge

points on residential streets to make it more convenient for people to own an electric vehicle. Mitie is putting its own plan in place to tackle the problem as well. e re working with our charge point partner, Pod Point, to install some chargers at our own offices, client sites and at the homes of our employees that receive an EV,” says Tim. “But we need suppliers, the government and local authorities to do more, so that we can be confident that all our drivers will have access to a charge point where and when they need it.” everal managers in itie s landscaping division have already switched their company cars to electric, and are already seeing the benefits. Vehicle supply is an issue, says Tim. “As a business that is used to buying thousands

of cars and vans a year, we re finding it a challenge to be able to secure the large volume of vehicles that we need to meet our targets. Our advice, though, to others embarking on their EV journey would be to engage vehicle manufacturers as early as you can to ensure you re able to procure vehicles when you need them.” Given the significant number of larger vans and specialist vehicles Mitie uses in the landscaping business, im says there aren t enough vehicles out there yet for us to move these models to electric”, but the company is eager to be part of the solution. e re very keen to work with manufacturers, and would encourage them to come and speak with us about future vehicle development and trialling.” im says businesses with large fleets of vehicles such as Mitie have a responsibility to lead the way, but it s still possible for smaller businesses to switch to EV too.

Small businesses definitely shouldn’t be put off by the higher list price of an electric vehicle aking the first step to an electric fleet can feel like a step into the unknown. hat s why we decided to set a smaller, but challenging, short-term target this year – to convert 20% of our car and compact van fleet to by the end of 2020. This allowed us to stagger

the introduction of vehicles – adjusting and improving our processes over time which puts us in the best position – to be able to ramp up our rollout beyond 2020, and meet our pledge of a fully electric fleet, where viable electric alternatives will be available by 2030. mall businesses definitely shouldn t be put off by the higher list price of an electric vehicle. s have significantly lower ta , running and maintenance costs, meaning a reduced whole life cost that easily makes up for the model being more e pensive than a petrol or diesel equivalent, making the switch cost neutral.” As pressure increases to become more environmentally friendly, businesses may not have much choice in transitioning to electric vehicles in the future, and it s worth considering now whether this is a worthwhile investment.

TOP TIPS Theft can put companies back thousands of pounds each year. Repeated incidents can even put some SMEs out of business. Though there are no guarantees against it, there are methods which can be used to prevent it or to limit the damage. Here, we share top tips for tackling theft, with some of the tried and tested methods from idverde’s head of assets and fleet management, Angus Lindsay.

1

Next level CCTV

Though the majority of sites will have some form of CCTV, Angus says thieves are unconcerned: “There’s a complacency. We have images of perpetrators who’ve made no effort to cover their faces because they know they’re not going to be tracked down.” He has now upgraded to PID systems, which record intrusions and alert the call centre. “Since we put them into our sites, we haven’t had any break-ins.”

4

Lock it away

“Make your equipment as secure as you can on site by using lock boxes and security devices,” says Angus. Batteries should also be removed, where possible. He also adds that sometimes “old fashioned is better”, recommending the use of steering locks on vehicles and blocking in machinery when not in use: “Park heavy objects such as trailers across entrances to depots over the weekend.”

10

Pro Landscaper / Equipment Supplement

Site security.indd 10

Tracking devices

Putting tracking devices on high value equipment can help police to recover the missing kit – idverde has recovered three of four stolen vans this year thanks to this technology, says Angus. Determined thieves may well search for the tracker and remove it, but if the theft is noticed early on, it can be found quickly and the damage minimised.

5

Insurance

If all else fails, at least ensure your equipment is insured. Angus says the police rarely investigate equipment theft because they are undermanned, so they will likely provide you with a crime reference number and advise you to contact your insurer.

3

Recognisable marks

Whether visible or invisible, markings can help with recognising stolen equipment. Angus says idverde is rolling out the use of SmartWater on its kit, a clear liquid which becomes visible under an ultraviolet light and can be scanned by the police to identify the owner. “We tag all our equipment with SmartWater, which is a deterrent – you can’t see where it’s tagged but there’s a sticker warning that there’s SmartWater on it. However, it relies on the equipment being recovered.” It’s also worth keeping an inventory, listing the make, model and serial number of each individual item of kit.

©Barry Barnes/Shutterstock.com

2

Whilst idverde uses a variety of theft prevention methods, Angus says the problem is getting worse. “It’s more opportunistic and blatant – in August alone, we lost around £40k worth of equipment. That’s everything from a remote control slope mower to two-stroke equipment.” He says that the company has to consider the crime statistics of an area in which its working, not just due to theft but also vandalism. Whilst large businesses can move equipment internally and replace stolen kit, Angus says that for a small business, theft can be devastating: he knock on effect in terms of turnover and upheaval is huge.” He says businesses should implement as many anti-theft tactics as they can to make a site look unappealing to potential thieves and to help recover stolen items. It may involve an initial hefty investment, but the cost without it could be far more damaging.

Though there’s nothing inherently wrong with the latter happening, it’s best to be prepared for when it occurs. s an employer, you must provide staff with access to working toilets. The best option when on site, then, is to hire a portaloo. As it is a legal requirement to provide toilet facilities, you do not need the client’s permission to hire a portaloo and place it on site, though you will need to ensure there is no damage to the area where it is placed. It is best to discuss it with the client beforehand, though, and explain that the cost to hire a portaloo will be included in the contract sum. You may also be responsible for insuring the portaloo whilst it is on site, so be sure to discuss this with your chosen hire company beforehand. taff welfare is crucial and knowing exactly what you are obliged to provide employees helps to flush out any problems early on. So, what does the portaloo need to include? The Health and Safety Executive says that flushing toilets need to be provided where

These can either be connected to the mains water and drainage system or can be used with a drainage tank and a bowser filled with water for flushing and washing hands. hen it is not possible to provide a flushing toilet, chemical toilets can be provided instead, which is a far more common option on smaller or temporary sites. Washing facilities must be added alongside these, with either hot and

cold or warm running water available, as well as soap or another cleaning item. You will also need to provide a means to dry, such as paper towels, and there must be ‘adequate ventilation and lighting’. The sink or washbasin must be large enough for members of staff to be able to wash their hands, face and forearms when necessary, and washing facilities ideally should be kept separate from where staff eat and drink. According to BS6465-1-2006, there should be one chemical toilet for every seven workers

According to BS64651-2006, there should be one chemical toilet for every seven workers who work 40-hour weeks who work 40-hour weeks. Typically, these will be emptied around once a week as part of the hire contract, but this may need to be more frequent depending on whether the number of workers is closer to one or seven. Working on a muddy site also means that cleaning will need to take place regularly. Whilst men and women can use the same toilet, there are some rules to bear in mind. Firstly, that the user has to be able to lock the toilet, which must be separate from urinals. If female workers are using the toilet, sanitary waste disposal must be provided.

Don’t get stumped Simon Bradshaw, sales manager at Predator, shares the pros and cons of selfpropelled stump grinders or walk behind machines

A

self-propelled stump grinder can be defined as any stump grinder that propels itself, including two-wheeled, wheeled or track mounted units. The other choice on the market is the walk behind two-wheeled machines, which a user pushes along like a mower. ne key benefit a user will find from self-propelled stump grinders is that it’s less ta ing on them physically. imon Bradshaw, sales manager at Predator, explains: “Rather than the operator moving the cutter head into the stump manually, they use hydraulic levers or a remote control.” Predator’s most popular wheeled self-propelled machine is the 460 – a hybrid, two wheeled, electrically driven stump grinder that has a central pivot. It can handle large stumps, with a wide-cutting slew and grinding depth of 15 inches. In comparison, track mounted stump grinders are generally

much better at reaching stumps than equivalently powered four wheeled units. The tracks allow the machine to be far more manoeuvrable in tight spaces with lower ground pressure. imon says this gives it the benefit of working on rougher, uneven ground. “Track mounted stump grinders have the ability to work on rough commercial sites, as well as traversing over steps and up steep inclines.” The 38X is Predator’s most popular track mounted self-propelled grinder, notes imon. his is the only tracked stump grinder on the market that’s the same width as a small walk behind machine at inches wide.” he benefit of this is that it’s great for gardens and compact sites. This particular model is perfect for commercial sites where there are multiple stumps and a much rougher terrain – as opposed to walk behind stump grinders where the user would have to e ert a lot of energy moving the stump grinder themselves. However, one potential problem with self-propelled machines is si e. hey re often

heavier and larger, which makes them potentially difficult for small sites and storage. “Users can often struggle with self-propelled stump grinders when working on tough access sites like back gardens, steps or through properties.” o, while walk behind machines are more tiring, at times they may be the superior option. If the machine is compact enough, self-propelled stump grinders are ideal for arb professionals with a regular demand for stump removal. s imon summarises elf propelled essentially takes most of the work out of the process. An operator will save time, reduce fatigue and hopefully save their back in the long run!”

DON’T COMPROMISE: CUT AND COLLECT WITH THE BEST Whether you are cutting a lawn, an estate or numerous contracts, the ISEKI SXG range of mowers cuts and collects, leaving a superior finish. Having been designed to offer the most reliable and highest quality diesel mowers on the market, ISEKI also built the machine with the driver’s comfort in mind. The suspension seat, extra leg room and easy dial-in height of cut adjuster provide effortless working. The SXG can be used across lawns, around wildflower meadows and in gardens, sports pitches or large grassed areas. Consisting of three models ranging from 13.5hp to 22hp, the range has a mower suitable for your needs. The mower decks start at a generous 40” width of cut up to a highly productive 54” deck, offering superior quality of cut. Simple height of cut adjustment and electro-hydraulic collector emptying are standard features that are easily carried out from the driver’s seat. With hydraulic deck lift, hydraulic power steering and hydraulic collector, the SXG is practically effortless to use, whether it’s for a couple of hours or all day, making cutting a grassed area an enjoyable experience. No need to wait for a dry day – the blowerless, straight chute direct from the cutting deck to the collector means that even when the ground is wet, you can still cut and collect with the same finish, enabling you to be as productive as possible. When the leaves have dropped in the autumn, you can collect these using the SXG mower, saving valuable time instead of manual raking.

A high-tip collector is another very useful option within the ISEKI SXG range. With its 1.94m maximum lift height for emptying into a trailer or in to neat compost piles, it allows you to be as efficient as possible, enabling you to carry on with mowing instead of wasting time either forking up the cuttings, or if you have a large site, collecting it into a trailer for disposal. Joshua Stebbings at Truro Independent School purchased an ISEKI for use on its grounds. He explains: “The SXG never misses a beat. With no issues and over 2,500 hours on the clock, the quality and reliability of ISEKI cannot be beaten. As part of the

buying process we had demonstrations from three other products, but the quality and value for money of the ISEKI SXG range allowed us to make a very easy decision.” Contact your local dealer to book a demonstration today to see for yourself. www.iseki.co.uk
