Equipment Expertise idverde’s Angus Lindsay wants to see landscaping move up a gear, through more forward-thinking equipment choices
W
hat Angus Lindsay does not know about landscaping equipment is probably not worth knowing. He writes regularly on the topic for Pro Landscaper, and also for his day job. Selecting and advising on kit is central to his role as group head of assets and fleet for idverde, the UK’s largest landscaping and ground maintenance provider. Angus has an engineering background, which means he understands how kit works and what can go wrong and with a keen
interest in environmental issues, he is well placed to advise on sustainable assets that will meet future requirements. He also has the qualifications, as these include an c in agricultural engineering and mechanisation from ranfield University. oreign fields Born in Scotland, Angus knew early on that he wanted to work in agriculture. “I used to enjoy spending time at my uncle’s arable farm in the Angus, Scotland, and was always fascinated by tractors. After graduating from the North of Scotland College of Agriculture, I worked at various commercial fruit farms in Perthshire, then decided to go and work overseas to broaden my experience.” As an agricultural technician for Voluntary Services Overseas in Egypt, Angus gained valuable experience, firstly as a farm engineer for energy and development corporation asdar in igeria, then as a field operations manager for ffcott, a igerian cotton farm. He also worked in Yemen for manufacturer assey erguson, training local farmers and government staff to make greater use of mechanisation. However, an injury forced Angus to return to the UK to recuperate and to rethink his career options.

two-wheel tractor. I’d like to see more attitudes change – we shouldn’t always use the same machines and do things in the same way.” Think green “Equally, environmental issues need to be at the forefront and now is a good time to switch to battery power. It could be more widely used and has really improved. There are considerable savings when you stop buying fuel. It is time to move away from the two-stroke engine and stop producing noxious gases. Again, switching to electric or hybrid vehicles makes sense – pollution is at high levels in urban areas, damaging health and green spaces.”
mowing machinery imported into the UK. After 18 months in the business, Angus returned to Glendale to take up a senior role responsible for plant, machinery and vehicles used for ground maintenance throughout the UK as well as strategy, health and safety, training and logistics. From here, around 10 years ago, Angus embarked on his current role with idverde. Challenging times For any landscaper or maintenance company tasked with buying equipment, this can be extremely challenging. Issues such as longevity, the amount of usage and updating technology are all relevant, plus costs vary enormously. It is also necessary to factor in how easy items are to repair and who is going to do this. Increasingly, there are also various legal and regulatory issues to comply with, growing demands for an environmental approach, and in the case of those working for local authorities, having to manage the effects of austerity. “Local authorities continue to go through di cult times. They want more work and to pay less and it is clearly having an impact. So, you may find it is not possible to do all that needs to be done or see a reduction in planting quality.” However, Angus does have plenty of

guidance on boosting e ciency when it comes to assets. He points out that local councils, large and small maintenance companies and landscapers could also probably improve what they own and, often, firms have too much kit, with some items being underused. Golden rules “Avoid machinery that is overly complex. Buy quality but look for simplicity because then there will be less parts to break down. I also think it makes far more sense to make use of multipurpose tools for a variety of jobs, rather than having to store and transport a wide range of separate tools. This is something that also needs to be developed and certainly the agricultural and construction sectors are considerably ahead of landscaping. It is also always going to be easy to buy cheap – but it won’t be a good buy. Machinery that contributes to health conditions like industrial deafness or vibration white finger is just storing up problems for the future.” Angus continues: “It’s important to buy equipment based on current thinking. Something like a rotavator has been around for years and is an expensive purchase, whereas you may get more versatility and value from a
There are considerable savings when you stop buying fuel. It is time to move away from the two-stroke engine and stop producing noxious gases He adds that the U would also benefit more from the use of smart technology. Take large areas of mowing – you would see a reduction in labour costs if robotic mowers were used. They are ideal for sports fields, for example, and could be used more productively elsewhere. We need to start seeing robotic mowers working at night and charging in the day, with docking stations placed somewhere unobtrusive.” o, is the next generation su ciently knowledgeable about equipment? Angus says he would like horticultural colleges to do more education here. The students meet tend to have a good knowledge oft horticulture, but limited awareness of how equipment works, and how to get the best use of it. However, the more we improve understanding, the better we can ensure landscaping and maintenance remain at the forefront of a greener future, in every sense.”

A commitment to care
Graham Bird, Ground Control’s national operations director, discusses environmental concerns and equipment choice being intrinsic parts of working practice
G
round Control is one of the largest providers of maintenance and landscaping solutions in the country. Despite the rapid growth, the business demonstrates it doesn’t compromise when it comes to green credentials. In 2016, Ground Control won a Queen’s Award for innovation in the application of systems and technology, recognising its strengths in commitment to conserving the environment and for their personalised approach to jobs. Ground Control has ISO 14001 NQA UKAS accreditation. This is an environmental management system that incorporates sustainability and carbon footprinting, with policies and procedures audited by a third party. It is also a member of ESOS (Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme), which is run by the nvironment gency, identifying cost effective and energy-saving opportunities. Ground Control works with public and private sector organisations, like: the NHS, Tesco, Severn Trent Water and Halfords.

Over the years, the company has also expanded to water, electric and telecom utilities, social housing, rail and highway transport. Forward thinking has allowed the business to grow, and one of the major initiatives is the company’s role as installer of electric vehicle charge points. Ground ontrol’s new offering will enable customers a greater flexibility when considering installing charge points at their premises. With ever-increasing challenges when it comes to budget approval for purchasing anything new, a lease hire option will allow facilities managers an alternative option to give customers, employees and visitors the service they need as the EV market accelerates over the next few years. This lease hire option gives facilities managers an alternative for customers, and provides employees and visitors with the services they might need as the market continues to grow. Graham says, they have 30 electric cars on order for management, and they are also exploring plans to switch to electric vans. “We are passionate about reducing our carbon footprint, and are also increasingly using battery-powered tools, like hedge trimmers, brushcutters and blowers.” Ground Control was also an early adopter of remote lawnmowers, which are useful when working on steeper banks as it ensures the safety of their staff. The firm’s mechanised
aboriculture division was set up in 2017, and means that specialist equipment is used to undertake all nature of tree works removing the inherent risk associated with operatives climbing trees and utilising chainsaws. Machinery is now being employed with tree removal, biomass processing and large scale flailing of shrubbery and saplings. Mechanical equipment being deployed are: tree shears, mulchers, specialist banks machines and whole tree chippers. Graham concludes: “This is a great company to work for, and the people are fantastic. I’ve been here since 2004! Much of what I do is travelling the country, and I love seeing the improvements we can make to landscapes.”

hired up For niche equipment, it can make sense to rent. For landscapers, there are convenient local options
I
f you only have an occasional need to use a specific piece of equipment, why not hire? Hire costs will need to be built into the price of the job, but benefits include fast access, quality and tested kit that is going to be straightforward to use. The one off payment can also be a lot easier to budget for. Matt Kent, a buyer for Toolstation, recently became aware his company has plenty of kit suited to landscapers. “We recently reviewed our landscaping category, which has led us to supply more specialist products. We added the AL-KO range of ride-on, tractor mowers and robotic mowers to our catalogue. Einhell is predominantly mass market, but their petrol lawn mower range is likely more than capable. “We also have the DeWalt cordless range. Customers have told us when competing for large contracts that carbon footprint and noise reduction is taken into consideration – it can be an advantage against competitors.” A further recent addition to the Toolstation stable are soil sifters, as well as a range of competitively-priced insulated (VDE) shovels by Bulldog. Compactors and mini dumper trucks

are popular rentals, along with builders’ exterior metalwork and landscaping cubes when constructing decking or a patio. The majority of the landscape power range is backed up with a service guarantee.
carbon footprint and noise reduction is taken into consideration “If something goes wrong, we can send it back to the manufacturer for the fault to be identified. AL-KO provides a dealer network with all the products we stock, which means landscapers can get their machinery serviced easily and locally.” He suggests landscapers sign up for the Toolstation catalogue and Trade Card, which offers days interest free credit. Jewson also supplies frequently to professional landscapers. Richard Pedersen, Jewson’s director of tool hire, comments: “A wide range of products are available to hire, from earth moving equipment to access scaffolding. e find that larger equipment tends to be popular with professional landscapers as it’s the sort of kit they don’t need every day, making it cost effective to hire for a one off job. “We have a range of specialist landscaping equipment available in case of breakdown or for bigger jobs when extra kit is needed on site.”
He continues: “We have around 300 specialist Tool Hire branches. You can hire from any of our branches across the UK, online or over the phone. Where possible, we look to get an order direct to site in four hours, but always within a maximum of 24 hours. You can also order to one branch and return to another.” Jewson has thousands of products and all equipment undergoes a full service, carried out by a qualified technician. ichard concludes cross our network, you’ll find experienced, highly trained specialists who can give you tips and advice on using kit effectively. They also advise on health and safety equipment or any accidental damage cover you might require.”

A design for the future Solent Garden Services’ expansion into landscaping has proven to be a successful business strategy
H
ampshire is renowned for its glorious gardens, particularly in the New Forest region. As counties come, there are few others better to run a landscaping and maintenance business from. Rob Woodhouse runs Solent Garden Services, which was established in 1973 by his father John, who had trained through an apprenticeship with Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres. Rob, on the other hand, had planned a career in design, a subject which he studied at University of Portsmouth. However, Rob was bitten by the horticulture bug and started working for his dad during the school holidays, joining full-time when he graduated. John is now semi-retired, but he continues to play a vital role growing plants for clients as Solent has its own nursery. Rob’s design training has proved useful in growing the business too. He says: “Growth has come from our knowledge of gardens and the experience

of taking areas that are often unusable or unloved and creating a beautiful, enjoyable outdoor space. “We have commercial contracts, but residential tends to be the most rewarding as it feels much more personal. You build a relationship with the client, it’s a great feeling when you design a garden that brings joy to people’s lives.” In terms of equipment, Solent benefits from an excellent local supplier, Carters of Swanwick, which both sells and hires and also has the county’s biggest showroom. Most of Solent’s equipment is owned, though on occasion heavy kit, such as an excavator, will be hired. In addition to John and Rob, Solent has four full time employees and can bring on additional staff for
Rob’s Top Choices:
• Hedge cutters, brush cutters and blowers “We have used many brands over the years, and we have always gone back to Stihl.” • Lawnmower “Stiga’s pedestrian mowers have been a good investment for us.” • Plunge saw “We have recently purchased a new plunge saw from Makita, which is the manufacturer we prefer for most of our power tools. This saw makes cutting wood and composite decking a dream!”
larger projects. It also has connections with Hampshire’s Sparsholt College, where it has taken on trainees and offers students practical experience. Managing a company is demanding, Rob explains: “When you run a landscaping and maintenance business you have a number of challenges, from the weather to sta ng, to handling the work schedule with new and existing business and all of the logistics. It is also about managing clients’ expectations and balancing budgets. Everything needs to stay on track and you must be flexible and adaptable. Success also comes down to having the right equipment and, fortunately, we’re making strong progress year on year.”
• Stanley knife “It’s nothing fancy, but when you lay a lot of artificial grass which is becoming increasingly popular this is all you need to cut it.” • Planning to test – battery tools “We haven’t made the move over to electrical equipment for our tools yet. I am open minded to it, though, and we will be considering them when we come around to replacing existing equipment in the future.”

A view from up high When you’re a climber, your life can depend on the right equipment. Stephen Harper discusses some of his most trustworthy choices
S
omeone with a head for heights and knowledge of good kit is Stephen Harper, lead climber for Gristwood and Toms, the UK’s largest arboricultural contracting company. Much of his work is with Bristol City Council, with which Gristwood and Toms works in partnership, providing all tree-related services. He’s been climbing with the firm for a year and was approached to join by area manager Matt Loader. “Bristol is one of the best local authorities when it comes to seeing trees for their value and there’s a variety of jobs,” says Stephen. “While I’m mostly climbing, I also do ground work and help with developing some of our trainees.” Stephen learned the arborist craft through practical experience, professional courses and also from studying countryside management at Lackham College in Wiltshire. “I particularly
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Fave Kit Arb.indd 11
enjoyed the woodland and forestry aspects of the course, so I knew this is where I wanted to specialise,” he says. He previously gained experience with smaller contractors and has now been climbing for eight years. These have fortunately been free from any serious mishaps or injuries. “You need good equipment that’s well maintained when you’re climbing. Your life depends on it.” For anyone planning a career as a climber, Stephen says the best advice he can give is to always take a calm and measured approach, as most accidents occur when there has been insu cient planning and too much rushing. He also recommends attending trade events such as The Arb Show. “I always try to catch demonstrations on single-rope technique – there is always scope to improve.” nd then it’s time for tephen to head off with chainsaw in hand, although he reveals he has a further move planned – this time onto the property ladder. “I’ve spent the past two years living on a canal boat, but I’ll now be putting down some roots.” Stephen’s Top Choices: • Chainsaw – Stihl MS 462 “It’s light but powerful, which is essential if you are in a tree and need to do a lot of pruning. The M-Tronic feature automatically adjusts the fuel as needed and it performs consistently well. It’s my preference for year-round work.”
• Catapult – Sherill Big Shot “I use this with a launch pole to ensure the throwline reaches the required location. catapult helps you reach di cult areas that can’t be reached by regular equipment. I also like Stein’s throwline kit and its Skyshot Pro weights.” • lothing r ortec reathe e “These are the best choice for strength and are the lightest available. find them the most comfortable for working in all types of weather.” • Chippers – Jensen and GreenMech “I often use chippers when not climbing and these are the ones we use and both work well.”
• Planning to test - the Petzl ZIGZAG “A lot of the lads are using these as their pulley and I will test it out, but I currently use a traditional hitch climber.”

cutter. All the equipment is designed in-house, with engines fitted from leading suppliers such as Honda, Kohler and Yanmar. Tracmaster is also the importer of the BCS brand, which hails from Milan, Italy. Tracmaster is the sole distributor of its two-wheel tractors, rotavators, power scythes, snow clearing equipment and the Commander professional mower. There has been a relationship between the two companies since Tracmaster was established and the BCS brand continues to expand. Last year, another division was established by Tracmaster – Artio Machinery. This division manufactures attachments that fit most two wheel tractors (including BCS) and include a scarifier, buck rake, wheel barrow and leveller grader. any landscape and maintenance contractors will be actively aware of climate change, noting first hand the effects of changing conditions and the frequency of more extreme weather events.More manufacturers are now seeking to
take action, providing equipment that does less to contribute to harmful greenhouse gases yet also continues to be highly effective. Mark Earles, business development manager at Makita, says: “With the landscaping industry, more clients are requesting that contracts are fulfilled with green’ options. This is especially noticeable in Europe, where cities are banning products that are considered pollutants. With blowers, this can mean diesel particles from vehicles found in dust being a health hazard.” He also noted that the carrying and mixing of fuel and oil on site is also becoming more of
an issue due to pollution, time spent on site, and mess. This can be eliminated by using cordless, battery operated products. We anticipate a continued growth in this area as organisations seek to reduce the use of petrol based machines to lower emissions output.”

need a heavy duty fuel powered product, but it is expected that future needs will eventually be met by battery and cordless machinery. The rise of robotics is also changing the face of some monotonous tasks, such as mowing. Mark adds that there can also be safety benefits. ank work is especially dangerous, with steep banks causing loss of control, falls and the risk of debris flying back up to the operator and hitting them. We are now seeing more robotic bank mowers being introduced.” Andrew Lees, UK category manager for Husqvarna, says robotic mowers have been slower to take off in the U compared to Europe, but sales are now starting to catch up. “In Sweden and Germany, for example, sales are far higher, but more are catching on to the

Jonathan Snowball (left) with Andrew Lees (right) fact that it makes sense to have an employee doing more skilled work, rather than spending hours mowing a large area.” Edinburgh City Council appears to agree. It is using Husqvarna’s robotic mowers on a range of prime sites including Princes Street Gardens. A major motivating factor is that these are emissions free, and the fact that robotic mowers allow staff to concentrate on horticultural activities elsewhere. Andrew continues: “Moving away from fuel is safer and means savings. t also reduces fire risk. Mowers are only one aspect, too. Chainsaws, trimmers and blowers are also now readily available in battery versions. Jonathan Snowball, product category manager with Husqvarna, explains that while fuel products are still being developed, the company’s focus is now more on battery and cordless. “You can work for hours on a single charge – a backpack blower, for example, will be operational all day – and charging is also now much faster. This technology is absolutely suitable for the professional market.” He adds that smart technology is also improving management processes for those

overseeing landscaping and maintenance employees. “Our app means it is possible to see what work is happening in terms of mowing and trimming. For example, looking at connected products and how their time is being managed. t’s a far more e cient and intelligent way of working.” The app can also provide maintenance information, such as if a spare part needs to be ordered. There is no getting away from the fact that the most powerful equipment, such as ride-on mowers, is still reliant on fuel. One driver for change is the EU’s Stage V emissions regulations, which seek to reduce harmful pollutants. David Hart, managing director of Kubota UK, comments: “The challenge of complying with emission regulations is an ongoing concern and one that we will continue to face. Every manufacturer will have to comply with the regulations put in place. “However, as we make our own engines and are recognised as the world leaders in the field, we are perfectly poised to continuously review our technology and ensure we’re keeping up to speed with the changing demands of today’s industry and staying ahead of the competition.” He continues: “Last year we introduced the , an innovative model which offers a premium specification designed to provide users with unrivalled levels of power, safety and comfort. This was the first of our H groundcare tractors to be fitted with a diesel particulate filter D in order to meet the new emission regulations.” Kubota is also among those experimenting with alternatives to traditional fuels – including battery. become more mindful of ways to help the environment and this is undoubtedly set to be a crucial, constant matter. Considerations could include investing in electric when you need new vans or, given that the UK’s charging infrastructure is still under development, picking a hybrid. You may also want to reduce, at least in part, the use of chemicals such as weedkillers, as it is known these can be harmful to bees among other concerns. Although it uses gas, one attractive alternative comes from Sherpa Tools, which produces a burner for chemical weed control, typically available for around £99. This allows the user to blitz weeds without having to use toxic chemicals. Avoiding the use of plastics whilst actively recycling and composting all have a part to play in greener landscaping. In terms of more environmentally friendly equipment, it is encouraging that suppliers are taking a responsible stand in developing a more sustainable future.
It will not be practicable for landscapers to suddenly upgrade all their kit to greener alternatives to suddenly upgrade all their kit to greener alternatives, but there certainly is scope to

Share the load with a Grafter A hard-working set of wheels plays a big part in getting the job done. Pro Landscaper speaks to Richard Waterworth, head of sales for Isuzu Truck UK Could you describe the range of vehicles and typically which model would be most suited to a landscaping firm? In the UK, our model range runs from 3.5 tonnes to 13.5 tonnes. The 3.5 tonne range is most suited to landscaping firms and offers two options the Grafter Green and the Grafter Blue. The more popular of the two, is the Grafter Green, as it is lighter, able to carry more, and it does not require AdBlue to run. The Grafter Blue has more power and a larger engine 3. litre compared to the Grafter Green’s 1.9 litre engine) but does require d lue. oth vehicles can tow up to 3. tonnes and come with a three year unlimited mileage warranty. s well as supplying chassis cab vehicles, we also sell pre bodied trucks, known as our

The main benefit of ordering one of our Driveaway vehicles is the shorter lead time. s our dealers tend to stock Driveaway trucks, they are often available to customers within a matter of days or weeks. uying a chassis cab and ordering bespoke bodywork via a bodybuilder could take significantly longer. n terms of specific models that suit landscaping firms, ’d say the Grafter Green dropsider, Grafter Green tipper and Grafter Blue tipper are probably the most popular. The Grafter Green Utilitruck is also well suited to landscapers, as it features a tipper body with a lockable tool pod for storing equipment.
doesn’t require AdBlue, but still meets the Euro 6 emissions standard. Despite the smaller engine . litre diesel they were able to achieve this with an impressive power output of , which is more than the older 3. litre 3 . model. The engine technology of our Grafter Green truck is also used in the latest su u D ax pick up. What did you feel customers were looking for and how did you incorporate this? e were aware that our customers would eventually need to consider investing in uro compliant trucks to meet uropean
How long was the Grafter Green in development? Did this take place in the UK? Our R&D colleagues in Japan developed the Grafter Green. They realised the need for a vehicle at 3.5 tonne that

legislation. With more and more Low Emission Zones emerging across the UK, it is going to prove challenging for any firm to operate in these areas if their vehicles incur a regular daily charge – as much as £100 a day in the London zone. We were also aware that customers are not too keen on AdBlue, so a Euro 6-compliant truck, that didn’t require the additive, would be welcome. As for our older 3.5 tonne trucks, our customers were not keen on the gearbox and suspension, so the Grafter Green gave us an ideal opportunity to update these. Customers are always looking for more payload capacity, and the weight saving we’ve achieved by using modern technology that allows them to carry more kilos per journey. Why did Isuzu feel there was a gap in the market for this type of truck? The Grafter Green was designed to satisfy the needs and requirements of customers operating in a crowded market (3.5 tonne trucks), based on what we’ve learned from them over the years. There wasn’t a ‘gap’ as such, but there certainly was some opportunity to improve an already well-established and well-respected 3.5 tonne work truck. What do you feel is the main appeal for landscapers and tree surgeons? Tree surgeons and landscapers usually agree

Commercial Vehicles.indd 23
on the three main benefits of our vehicles – their impressive payload capacity, how easy they are to manoeuvre, and their ability to tow up to 3.5 tonne. What’s been the feedback from new Grafter Green owners? Feedback from Grafter Green owners has been fantastic. The steering, new gearbox and improved ride quality have all been highlighted, and the truck’s reliability has been described as faultless. Do you think green issues are of increasing concern to those working in arboriculture or landscaping? I imagine that companies in the arboriculture and landscaping industries are especially aware of their carbon footprint and impact on the environment, as the outdoor world is their workshop floor.
professional vehicle livery/branding, a clean, modern truck and reliable equipment, says a lot about your business and how much you value your customers’ opinions and perceptions of what you do. Even if you do no other form of promotion or marketing for your business, your liveried truck can still serve as a mobile billboard that’s seen by hundreds, if not thousands, of people every day. Are these vehicles readily available from UK-wide dealers? Are there any deals to be aware of? Our dealers usually carry a good stock of the Driveaway vehicles, as these are such a popular choice for customers. We currently have a . per cent flat rate on finance packages over 12, 24 or 36 months. Over 48, 60 or 72 months, the rate is 2.69 per cent. Terms and conditions apply – see www.isuzutruck.co.uk/finance for further details.
Grafter Green looks good – do you feel that a smart truck adds to professionalism? It’s true that the proof is in the workmanship, and that a shiny new truck doesn’t make you a great tree surgeon or landscaper overnight. Having said that, if you’re willing to invest in

Cub Cadet
Cub Cadet has zero-turn models suited to professionals, distributed in the UK via Barrus. The largest tasks, such as those required by local authorities, can be handled with ease by the Z5 152, but more general use is readily within the reach of the XZ3 122. Key advantages with the XZ3 122 includes Synchro-Steer technology. The traditional steering wheel provides the manoeuvrability of a conventional zero turn, but with full control of the front wheels. This means it is straightforward for new operators to use and facilitates mowing around fences and trees. The centrally mounted deck maximises mowing accuracy in corners and under low obstacles, while a low centre of gravity and wide wheelbase allow the machine to glide over uneven ground and still cut in a straight line across hills and slopes. The advanced mulching technology re circulates the airflow around the cutting deck delivering effective and e cient mulching capabilities. The HF 2417 HME is packed with features, including Honda V-twin engines, which are reliable, high performance and offer cleaner exhaust gas emissions. A decompressor provides easy start and restart, and it is currently one of the most fuel e cient engines on the market. The cast iron cylinder sleeve and high capacity air filter ensure a long lifetime, while a hydrostatic drive gives greater accuracy and a stepless speed control. The synchronous blade cut system means both blades have an overlapping cutting area to create accurate mowing, avoiding any uncut areas when turning. A synchronized blade belt system results in constant cutting performance to avoid uncut areas even when turning, resulting in optimised grass collecting. The model contains Honda’s Versamow selective mulching system, and with a single lever the system will either collect the grass cuttings into the bag or finely shred and blow them down into the lawn, creating a natural fertiliser. dditionally, the ptiflow feature

The lightweight blower has high, low and boost settings and delivers 148km/h air speed at full power, yet produces only 80dB LpA noise output. It is battery-powered, which means an 80% reduction in vibrations versus combustion models, meaning operators can comfortably use the equipment in urban areas. Kärcher’s 50V lithium-ion batteries work on a modular concept, allowing them to be interchanged between products in the range; the batteries deliver up to 225 minutes on a single charge and can be recharged in as little as 25 minutes. www.kaercher.com/uk/professional
The Professional Leaf Suction Unit (PSU) from SCH is perfect for clearing up large areas of fallen leaves, and features a powerful 9HP Honda engine, mounted next to the fan on a two-wheeled chassis. The fan is belt driven and not connected directly to the crank shaft, which increases the lifespan of the engine as it does not get jolted if a rock is accidentally sucked up and hits the fan blades. Green waste passes through the fan and is then chopped up and propelled into the trailer, greatly increasing the storage density of the leaves and allowing for less empties per day. The PSU saves time and cost in labour and is significantly less taxing than raking and bagging. It can be attached to the rear of a leaf collecting trailer – SCH manufactures specially adapted trailers. Alternatively, a trailer adaption kit can be provided for modification and H also offers this as a service. www.schsupplies.co.uk

There are five options in the illy Goat brushcutter mower range, and these can make light work of overgrown bushes, shrubbery, paths and can also be used to cut meadows easily. The HH and H H have a cm wide pivoting deck with higher tip speed for improved cut quality and ergonomic controls. They can handle uneven terrain and the pivoting brush deck hugs the ground for a better cut, which minimises scalping and improves traction by keeping the weight of the machine on its drive wheels. They are able to cut saplings and brushes at a rate of just under an acre of brush per hour. The HH U offers the features of the eries with pivoting deck and variable Tuff Torq hydrostatic transmission but has lockable front caster wheels to help hold its position on hillsides. The swivelling front castor wheels give the brushcutter more mobility when being turned and operators do not need to take their hands off the machine to change gears. The H and complete the range and offer a cm wide fixed deck. These are commercial duty brushcutter mowers, particularly stable in deep vegetation. The mechanical transaxle featuring three speeds forward and one reverse is ideal for clearing meadows and fields or cutting paths and trails wherever dense brush and weeds present a challenge. Tripod ladders Japanese gardens have made headlines for their artistry, but their underrated tool choices are also highly practical and effective in U landscapes. The Niwaki range includes tripod ladders, which are used all over apan. They offer a lightweight, sturdy platform to work from and are ideal for landscape gardeners, allowing them to work face-on or sideways to the job in hand. Their adaptability, stability and comfort allows the user to focus. Being welded, not riveted, they are strong and still easy to transport. The original Niwaki tripod ladder is suited to regular garden use, while the BS EN 131 certified heavy duty ro is produced for those needing the hardest-wearing, most reliable solution, with a weight capacity of up to 150kg. www.niwaki.com
Felling Axe
Wilkinson Sword
Chainsaws may not be suited to all smaller jobs, or those where a quieter approach is necessary, and so a traditional axe can be a tried and trusty addition to the tool set. Wilkinson Sword has a range of three. This includes a felling axe, for tasks such as felling trees and chopping substantial logs and thick branches, along with a hatchet for chopping smaller logs that can be used either double or single handed. This is rounded out by a splitting axe with an extra lip across the face of the blade, helping to split wood rather than chop it. The axe also has a solid flat face at the other end of the cutting edge, a useful aid when splitting particularly gnarly hard wood. www.wilkinsonsword-tools.co.uk
