echnology is playing an increasing role in the landscape industry. It can improve efficiency, productivity and accuracy. Take robotic mowers, for instance. While they’re scuttling around mowing the lawn, you can be undertaking another task – maybe with your battery powered hedge trimmer – and checking up on the bot via an app. Husqvarna is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Automower this year, with robotic mowers set to be a growing focus for the Swedish supplier going forward, so take a look how these machines can benefit you on page 8. Vehicle tracking has also come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years. Businesses can easily monitor their fleet, ensuring safer driving, lowering fuel consumption and saving money. Quartix – which has more than 13,000 customers globally – explains why businesses should be investing in this technology on page 10. For a perhaps a more cost-effective topographic survey, drones are growing in popularity. Landscape company NT Killingley has invested in its own fleet of drones, and senior engineer David Bagshawe discusses the process of aerial surveying on page 6. The Pro Landscaper team has been globetrotting over the last couple of months,

News BALI-NCF members trim the number of incidents by 61% in the last three years

T

he British Association of Landscape Industries’ (BALI) National Contractors Forum (BALI-NCF) has revealed the number of incidents involving its members and hedge trimmers may have decreased by as much as 61% since 2017. The significant reduction in accidents and near misses was calculated by BALI technical officer policy research wen Baker, who manages the BA - CF ealth Safety Forum alongside BALI-NCF chairman hil ones, chief e ecutive of S Landscape Contractors.

wen commented sing the ‘accident frequency rate’ metric per 100,000 hours of work, I was able to compare the number of reported incidents submitted by members of the Health and Safety Forum before and after we implemented training. The data suggests a pleasing decrease of both accidents and near-misses between 2017 and the end of 2019.” In early 2018, the BALI-NCF teamed up with BALI Registered Affiliate ST to host a series of workshops specific to hedge trimmers. The workshops were

aimed at trainers working for or with BALI-NCF members. The initial workshops were so successful that the BALI-NCF decided to work with Andreas ST for a second time, to host

eight more sessions in 2019. Held at four different college venues, the events were well received by 150 attendees, representing 29 landscaping companies in the . www.bali.org.uk

They’ve got big aspirations to shake up the market and bring new approaches to the way we work. e’re also going to invest heavily in apprenticeships, work with some key clients, and try and get some people from disadvantaged backgrounds, among others, interested in what we do. This, linked with ongoing career development with existing employees, gives us a double win.” The initial £5m investment will consist of £3m for equipment, £500k for systems, and £1.5m for

upgrading the fleet. The first new piece of machinery introduced to support the ever-expanding portfolio of works in the Midlands is a ohn eere 61 tractor, geared up for use with winter maintenance service delivery prior to the start of the grass cutting season. Flying into the Future David Bagshawe, senior engineer at NT Killingley, explains how drones can benefit the landscape industry

D

rones aren’t always painted in the best light. Sometimes surprising members of the public by sounding like a distant swarm of angry bees, these little aircrafts – also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – have received some fairly bad press in recent years. However, whilst in the hands of an irresponsible member of the public they may be perceived as troublesome, drones do offer vast commercial opportunities. Amazon, for instance, is planning on using them to deliver packages, enabling a more efficient and impressive service to its customers. To use a drone for commercial operations, the operator must hold a permission from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and conduct operation within a strict set of guidelines. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, 4,530 drone operators had permission for commercial use in August 2018; in 2010, this figure was a meagre five. So, love them or loathe them, drones have soared in popularity, and they certainly have their uses. But what about in landscaping?

6

drones.indd 6

Pro Landscaper / Equipment Supplement

To Chesterfield-based company T illingley, drones have been invaluable. So much so that, having earned CAA permission, the landscape contractor decided to invest in its own fleet. Involved in a number of large projects in 2015, topographic surveys were required to record material movement and placement of fill. Traditional methods across these vast sites would have been too slow, so the team looked for a technological solution, settling on drones. “Using a drone, we can capture large areas faster, more efficiently and with less risk than traditional land-based methods, says avid Bagshawe, senior engineer at T illingley. t’s not ust landscapers who can benefit, either.

UAV flight plan

We can capture large areas faster, more efficiently and with less risk than traditional land-based methods avid adds that a variety of sectors can use drones, including construction, design, planning, housing development and private clients. UAV aerial surveying Before attending a site for aerial surveying, C or tablet-based software is used to input parameters including the area required, altitude, ground resolution and image overlap. This is used to produce a flight plan, with the duration and distance required. Ground control points are then set for georeferencing. “Ground control points (GCPs) are large marked targets established on the ground and placed to cover the area of interest, e plains avid. They are surveyed by either S or total station, an electronic surveying instrument, and their co-ordinates are recorded for later use. Following take-off, the A will autonomously carry-out the pre-programmed mission

model and drawings from NT Killingley. “We have found the UAV to be a quicker and more cost-effective solution against traditional land-based topographic surveys with the additional benefits of aerial photography, video and remote inspection abilities,” says David. “We have used the drones and software for a number of years, and there has been a significant increase in their use and sectors that they are used in. Looking to the future, we are continuing to invest in staff training and development and constantly monitoring advances in the drone technologies.” So, whilst the jury might be out on their domestic use, it’s hard to argue against drones having a place in the landscape industry going forward.

The robotic mower, at first powered by solar cells, soon switched to battery for the ne t model, taking weather dependency out of the e uation. Since then, the technology has continued to develop, with te t message alerts, for instance, and a S assisted navigation. As market demands change, us varna adapts its robotic mowers to suit. Three years ago, us varna launched us varna Fleet Services on the 00 Series Commercial obotic mowers. The fleet management tool, which can be integrated with other landscaping e uipment, enables a fleet of machines to be tracked and controlled remotely using a laptop, tablet or smart phone. obotic mowers are a big focus for us varna, says Andrew ees, us varna category manager

They free up resource, allowing the redeployment of skilled labour on to more intensive tasks. The robotic mowers not only emit e tremely low noise and no direct emissions, but they allow for a higher level of finish with much lower operating costs compared to conventional machines. keeping your fleet on track Quartix’s Sean Maher says vehicle tracking can save money, encourage safer driving and simplify logistics

arnessing new technology within your business can make day-to-day tasks easier, present new possibilities and allow for a new outlook on certain business elements. Implementing vehicle tracking into a business can allow better management of a commercial fleet and reduce operational costs. UK-based vehicle tracking company uarti offers a comprehensive vehicle tracking system with various package options. Founded in 2001, Quartix was started by four industry professionals with a combined experience of over 120 years in embedded computing, systems design and telemetry. The company currently provides vehicle tracking for more than 13,000 fleet customers globally and employs over 11 members of staff.

to capture 1080p dashcam footage of journeys that drivers take and view this within the Quartix vehicle tracking system. Footage is stored on the Fleet Focus Cloud for up to three months and can be downloaded. The technology has been engineered to detect and flag notable g-force events, speeding incidents and accidents. V hi l t a ing n t uarti offers a vehicle tracking software for its customers, allowing them to monitor

a fleet, store dashcam footage and access driver route maps, allowing for a managed, stress free approach. Sean aher, head of field sales, e plains ne benefit of vehicle tracking is reducing the costs of running a fleet by driving down fuel spend, preventing costly maintenance work and eliminating unnecessary overtime. “With real-time tracking, you have the ability to show the nearest vehicles to a postcode, see driver timesheets, and set up geofencing alerts and vehicle maintenance reminders. is also improved via the driving style analysis features and driver league tables.” With multiple packages available, Quartix provides several solutions and options for a range of vehicle tracking and management requirements. Sean continues: “Our standard package comes with live tracking and driver timesheets, as well as a host of other features. ith nfo lus, you’ll benefit from driving style analysis. A third-tier option offers integrated fleet management software and fuel cards.” Due to the nature of our industry, a large majority of companies have employees who fre uently work off-site using company vehicles, and staying in touch with members of staff working off-site is key. Sean also notes that it offers a lot of value for smaller businesses ehicle tracking is definitely beneficial for any size of business, especially if a lot of time is spent off-site or on the road. aving record of mileage and routes taken can help with billing, and support a business if claims are made against them. It can also help them understand how they can drive down costs.” Tracking device installation The installation process of fitting the tracking devices to the vehicles is a simple task ranging between 30 to 40 minutes. Self-install devices are also available, and these have two variations for customers to choose from. Sean explains: uarti offers a wide range of installation options, including simple self-install alternatives that provide more fle ibility for companies that may envisage moving the devices between vehicles often. “With the installation guides and videos, customers are supported throughout the installation process and can always call the support team for advice. If customers opt for the hardwired device, they can make use of the large network of Quartix installers across the UK.” Once installed, data can start being collected and monitored. Quartix prides itself with data that is easy to read and interpret, presented on a user-friendly system. Timesheets and reports are easy to digest and read with driving style reports being broken down into separate sections with overall driving scores.

Driving style analysis Quartix’s driving style reports allow for companies to uniquely monitor each driver within their fleet via a uni ue system, registering a score for each driving element; speed, breaking and acceleration. The data is collected and presented in a driving league table, ranking each driver across your fleet. Sean has said that this element of the technology has been extremely useful within the landscaping industry: “We have several landscaping customers that

We have several landscaping customers that have had great success with Quartix vehicle tracking have had great success with Quartix vehicle tracking – John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance is a great example. The team at John O’Conner used the Quartix driving style data to investigate whether poor driving

scores correspond with higher fuel costs and higher repair costs. “The answer was a resounding yes – a driver with above average speed scores totalled £1200 in fuel consumption, £96 in workshop repairs and just 1.5 hours of workshop labour time over a three month period. In the same three months, a driver with a poor speed score, covering similar mileage to the latter, used £150 of extra fuel, cost the company an extra £2120 in repairs and incurred 29.5 hours of workshop labour.” When the Quartix system registers a driver in your fleet with a low score, the information available can be used to help drivers improve and learn from mistakes, which will not only improve driver safety but also save money. Discussing the future of the company, Sean says there will be more innovations in store for Quartix customers. “2020 will see many more self-serve options being added to the Quartix system so that customers have even more control over how they see their data. Our development team are always working hard to provide the best possible user experience.”

Cutting Costs Sean Butler tells us how he’s striving towards driving down costs on tool hire and delivery of materials

T

ool and plant hire is a very competitive industry. Dealers are all striving for our business. Taking time to create longterm relationships with your suppliers is key to driving costs down and ensuring a quality service. Price is not always about the lowest being the best. Price should be about quality of product and service received in paying for it. As an example, at Cube we are often approached by alternative suppliers to gain our business. They offer cheaper prices and mostly overpromise themselves. I have to admit in my early business days I would jump ship and go to the next cheapest supplier. This was purely inexperience on my part. You know cheapest isn’t always best – that, from experience, is a fact.

You know cheapest isn’t always best We are working in circles. Just think about it, every supply chain has a consumer chain. o matter the industry, we’re all affected by this. So, at what stage do we try to reduce our

12

Pro Landscaper / Equipment Supplement

sean butler.indd 12

own consumer costs as landscapers? And how? You have to negotiate on a regular basis. You should negotiate prices for projects at least nine months in advance of your booked projects. Your supply chain will welcome your loyalty and reward this by fi ing costs. As an example, we have been with our local plant hire company, stone supplier CED, artisan metal worker, raw wood supplier and Europlants, for the last 25 years. We are one of Jewsons’ largest accounts in Essex, and it goes the e tra mile to secure our business. e find cheaper prices on various products with other suppliers but stay with Jewsons for the quality and reliability of the service it provides. This, in turn, helps my business to plan ahead. Planning ahead helps to keep costs down on all projects. If you can plan projects that are geographically close together, you can have projects running simultaneously. If planned correctly, hired-in plant can be shared, saving on delivery charges. When booking a piece of machinery for a week which is cheaper than just a few days, you can share this across more than one project.

Part-load costs can be expensive, so at the beginning of projects, work out your volumes on muck away and materials ordered. You can keep your expenses to a minimum by sharing costs across projects. Recycling materials across projects also helps the environment and saves money. We always look at what we can recycle between all our projects. Topsoil that is in excess on one project, for example, may be required on another, and therefore saving costs and being environmentally friendly at the same time. In summary, plan ahead and don’t be afraid to negotiate long-term fi ed costs. About Sean Butler Sean Butler is a landscape designer and director of Cube 1994. With a background in civil engineering, Sean has an in-depth understanding of the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally-built landscape.

longer running times and a higher kW output. Three new blowers for the professional market are also being released – BGA 86, BGA 200, which are both batterypowered, and the BR 800 C-E. The BGA 86 is replacing the BGA 85 and is 40% more powerful with a blowing force of 15N whilst also being noticeably lighter and quieter. The BGA 200 is the most powerful STIHL cordless blower with a force of 21N and has a high air speed for coping with wet leaves. The BR 800 C-E has an 80cc STIHL 4-MIX engine which runs on a fuel-oil mix, giving a blowing force of 41N, fast acceleration, more power, added torque, lower noise and reduced emissions. Braving the cold Austrian weather, we headed outside to test out some products. We tried a whole host of products, from chainsaws to mowers. Once we’d had our fun, we retreated inside to learn more about the new launches. STIHL had recently released its most powerful cordless chainsaw – the MSA

220 C-B – which, due to the 3/8 P chain, is ideal for felling, thinning work, construction and wood carving. Powered by a 36V lithium-ion battery, it is recommended to be used alongside the new AP 300 S battery. STIHL has also expanded its range of professional mowers with the RM 655 RS and the RMA 765 V. The RM 655 RS is a petrol rear roller mower which includes a single speed, split, driven rear metal roller and adjustable cutting height. Along with a new rear roller mower it is also releasing

MSA 220

a cordless professional mower. Using the 36V AP battery system, the new RMA 765 V is a twinbladed machine with 63cm cutting width that can be used to cut and collect, cut and drop or mulch with the mulch plug accessory. A control panel on the handlebar gives the current battery status, eco mode function and variable speed control in 5 stages from 0 to 6km/h.

Staying Connected STIHL Connected takes some of the stress of management away, giving a detailed overview of key power tool data via a portal which enhances maintenance programmes and fleet management

A

n innovative use of smart technology, STIHL Connected is made up of three parts – the STIHL Smart Connector, the STIHL app and the STIHL Connect Pro Portal. When a STIHL Smart Connector is attached to any piece of machinery, it instantly begins to manage key machinery performance data that can then be accessed via the STIHL app or the STIHL Connect Pro Portal. The device will record how long a piece of machine has been

running for and advise when it is due for a maintenance appointment. Changing the way in which businesses are run, the STIHL Connect Pro Portal allows employers to manage both their team and tools remotely. Tools can be assigned to both employees and specific obs to fit in best with the company’s schedule. You can also monitor where a machine was last used. This will help to minimise downtime and ensure optimum scheduling. This piece of technology could not only revolutionise the way a business is run, but could also be a sustainable alternative to mountains of paperwork, appointment books and tool service reports. Whether users are managing a large fleet or self-employed, ST Connected looks to be capable of saving both time and money in the long-run.

Are you

safe?

Anyone using garden machinery needs to be aware of the associated risks. Mark Earles, business development manager OPE at Makita, looks at how innovations can help improve safety on site

m

any gardening and landscaping projects require a powered tool to get the job done, but these pose a number of associated risks and considerations. Petrol powered machines are noisy, maintenance hungry and environmentally unsustainable; whilst corded options provide some alleviation to these issues, a cordless machine will go even further by also helping to reduce health and safety risks on site. Thanks to advances in battery technology, cordless machines are now a very viable and credible alternative to their fuelled and corded alternatives. Makita’s lithium-ion battery technology T , for e ample, offers far longer run times and charge times, improving on-site efficiency. T has also been designed to charge and discharge evenly across all cells, keeping the battery – and therefore the tool – working at its optimum, even for tough jobs. Comparatively quiet when compared to petrol alternatives, a battery-operated tool

negates the need to carry fuel or mix oil with petrol on site. Also, operators don’t need to plan for the safe placement of cables around site, which provides increased freedom and omits any potential trip hazards from power leads. Cordless machines may also incorporate a brushless motor – these do not have carbon brushes or a commutator, meaning no friction is created within the motor. Even when used in hard industrial applications or over extended periods of time, the motor’s design prevents the tool from overheating. Operators should also consider vibration levels. Battery powered machines emit considerably lower vibration levels compared to petrol tools, helping to protect against vibrationrelated health problems such as vibration white finger. The aforementioned brushless motors produce lower vibration levels still, further improving the safety of those using the machine. Manufacturers will often incorporate other features into tool design to improve health and safety and enhance user comfort. These can include auto switch-off, ergonomically designed handles and grips, speed lock and kickback control. For example, Makita’s DUR368AZ Line Trimmer features AFT (Active Feedback Sensing Technology), which shuts down the tool to protect the user if the rotation speed suddenly

slows down due to impacting on a rock, branch or post. Products featuring LXT – Sub-Compact Brushless technology, such as the new DUB184 Blower, offer compact and light solutions in the 18V category to achieve ergonomic handling and improved power compatible with a vast 18V cordless tool range. AVT (Anti Vibration Technology) dramatically reduces rotary vibration and, at the same time, increases impact power by up to 75%. rofessionals will encounter many different tasks that re uire different types of e uipment. excitement for the launch: “This is the most exciting battery launch we’ve had in many years, and am confident these chainsaws will be game changers. The T540i XP and 540i XP saws have been designed for cutting capacity and convenience for the user, meaning the battery power is complemented by maneuverability, ergonomics and a user-friendly interface with quick control.” There are many features to note when looking at the design of these two machines, one of the most notable being the hand guard design. The new design offers increased visibility, which in turn, provides a safer experience for arborists and tree care professionals. The models are also low maintenance due to no refilling necessary, paired with an electronically controlled drive system which results in less downtime and operation costs. Both the Husqvarna T540i XP and the Husqvarna 540i XP are much lighter than their petrol family members. The battery powered design means the weight is reduced by up to 400g, providing a balanced and easier experience. The inclusion of the batterylocated to the rear of the chainsaw also assists with balance when in use resulting in a compact, ergonomic design. The three battery types available are also interchangeable between the two machines, meaning compatibility while working on a job without a charger will

Planning Ahead Iseki reveals how it’s well prepared for Stage V emission regulations to come into force with its new SF224 mower

espite only distributing to the UK for the past year and a half, Iseki has made a big impact on the market. It’s looking to continue its growth, too, e panding its product offering for professionals with the introduction of the SF224 mower. This new out-front mower has a Stage V compliant 22.5hp diesel engine and hydrostatic transmission with automatic or selectable fourwheel drive. There is also a lockable differential for use when conditions demand. To ensure

We wanted to offer the customer a competitively priced out-front mower with the same Iseki quality and reliability efficient engine cooling, the radiator is fitted with an automatic reversing fan, preventing the blockage of the grill.

David Withers, managing director of Iseki UK & Ireland, says: “With the [Stage V] engine regulations coming into place shortly, we wanted to offer the customer a competitively priced out-front mower with the same Iseki quality and reliability alongside a new Stage V compliant 22.5hp diesel engine. e believe the SF224 offers the most economical way to cut grass commercially with high productivity, plus the added benefit of the new engine, enabling customers to save on fuel and initial purchasing costs of their machinery.” There are a range of decks on offer to suit various customer sites and cutting cycles, which allows the mower “to be highly versatile in this competitive market”, says David. It is compatible with the esse , seki and uthing flail decks, as well as the new Iseki 60” out-front rotary deck. The cutting height on this can be adjusted from 25mm to 125mm in 12.5mm increments as required, and a mulching kit is also available. The SF224 also comes with a large storage box as standard. “We studied how people use their mowers, quickly realising that storage was a key issue when out cutting for long periods,” explains product manager Richard Tyrrell. “With the SF224, operators can be more effective and productive, taking all the equipment with them in the large storage bed.”

seki apan’s aim for the first three years has been on growing its dealer network, focusing its efforts on dealerships which are looking to e pand their diesel offering. avid explains: “We’re looking to partner with dealers who previously would have had to turn away business because they didn’t have that higher bracket of diesel tractors to offer to customers. “The addition of the new dealers alongside our dedicated, long-standing partners has been instrumental in driving the market share and increases in machinery sales over the last year. We wish to continue with this for many years to come.” CONTACT Iseki UK & Ireland 3-5 Foxtail Road, Ipswich, IP3 9RT Tel 01473 599266
