Sandown Park Racecourse is conveniently located within the M25 and only 25 minutes by train from London Waterloo or 15 miles from south-west London. If using a Sat Nav, please enter ‘Portsmouth Road’ rather than the Sandown Park postcode – this will bring you to the main car park which is just off the A307 (Esher High Street) and is directly in front of the main entrance. Parking is free in the centre of the racecourse, which you can reach from the More Lane entrance. Alternatively, for £6 you can park in the main car park off the Portsmouth Road. This year’s panellists are sure to have plenty to say – Mark Gregory, Norman Hambrook and Charles Benton will be in the hot seat, ready to answer the audience’s questions.

Norman Hambrook Managing Director, Hambrooks Landscapes

Norman Hambrook is a founder member of the APL and has been an active member of BALI since 1979. He has served on the Horticultural Trade Association (HTA) National Council and in 2010 he was given one of the highest accolades for the industry when he received a Landscape and Amenity Lifetime Achievement Award. He began his landscaping business in April 1970 with just a spade and a fork. By 1976 he had bought a piece of land with run-down greenhouses in Titchfield, which is now a garden landscaping centre. In 1983 he extended the business further and bought the land and wholesale nursery in Curdridge, now the Hambrooks head office, where four businesses operate under the group umbrella. Riding four recessions, Hambrooks now employs more than 80 staff and has won over 60 national industry awards.

Mark is a 20-time gold medal winner at the Chelsea Flower Show and has won numerous industry awards for projects in London and the South East. His dynamic approach, energy and experience have given him a reputation for innovation and technical expertise within the landscaping community. As well as heading up Landform, Mark is incredibly active in the landscaping and horticultural industries. He lectures all over the country delivering workshops and seminars for the Society of Garden Designers, BALI and APL and is regularly consulted by other designers and contractors. Mark has been a board member of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), is chair of the APL and has recently been appointed as a director of the HTA. Mark is a regular RHS judge and assessor, and a former member of the Chelsea Gardens panel.

Charles Benton

With a life-long love of the outdoors, Charles Benton’s self-built business is a dream turned into reality, having begun in the rose ﬁelds of Kent at 16, budding and grafting roses, and working in a nursery on the weekends. Charles set up his own business, Benton Landscapes, at the age of 22 and takes great pride in both the quality and detail of workmanship, aiming consistently to deliver the very highest quality service to every single one of his clients. Charles recently appeared on ITV’s This Morning where, alongside his brother, he created ﬁve small themed gardens. He was also responsible for creating the Ideal Home Show’s Main Show Garden for its Manchester Show 2014.

Jilayne has run a successful independent garden design practice based in North London for the past 15 years. She likes to work closely with her clients, providing a bespoke design service to produce original gardens that reﬂect the client’s personality. She enjoys transforming spaces into beautiful, functional gardens for her clients to enjoy whilst adding value to their property. She draws her inspiration from the rugged Cornish landscape blended with over 20 years of London life, using both modern and traditional architecture as reference points. Jilayne trained at the much respected Capel Manor College in Enﬁeld and is a Registered Member of the SGD.

In 2012 Paul left his career in the city to follow his passion to become a garden designer. After graduating from the London College of Garden Design in 2013, Paul was selected as one of six ﬁnalists for a new BBC2 TV programme The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge, where he built four show gardens and received two out of four judge’s gold medals for his formal garden and concept garden. Following his success on the show, Paul has been awarded an RHS gold medal for his Show Garden ‘Our Place’ at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2015.

In 2010 she set up her garden design practice undertaking residential and commercial projects in the UK and abroad. Ruth sits on the commercial board of the Royal Horticultural Society. Clients value her combination of creativity and business-like approach. Ruth was awarded a silver medal in 2012, a gold medal in 2013 and most recently a silver-gilt and Best Fresh Garden (People’s Choice) in 2015 at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Back for a second year, the Passion is in the Plants brings three more passionate plant experts to the stage. This year, the debate focuses on how, when and why plants should be bought. Panellists will offer tips on how to secure the plant you want in the condition you want it, and in timely fashion. Richard McKenna of Provender Nurseries, Angela Halksworth of Tendercare and Adam Dunnett of Wyevale Nurseries will take questions from Jim Wilkinson and the audience.

ANGELA HALKSWORTH director tendercare nurseries LTD

Entrepreneurial by nature, having grown up living on a family narrow boat business, Angela originally entered the industry via interior landscaping. It was here her path crossed with future husband Andrew Halksworth, with whom she founded Tendercare Nurseries Ltd in 1989. Understanding that clients are making a signiﬁcant investment when choosing plant specimens, the company oﬀers a range of services to support landscapers and professional designers, who often visit the nursery with their clients. The company has recently completed an extensive phase of refurbishment to display a tailored selection of evergreen trees, shrubs and mature climbers suitable for modern, garden room style gardens, in addition to unique character pieces for special projects. Past projects include the Hampton Court Privy Garden redevelopment, Battersea Park restoration, IMAX Cinema climber walls, Oval Cricket Ground ariel planting screens, living walls at Wimbledon and supply to private gardens throughout the South East of England.

Richard McKenna is hands on when it comes to plants and can often be found getting his hands dirty on site at Provender Nurseries. Coming from a farming background, his passion for plants led to Writtle College where he gained an HND in Commercial Horticulture before starting work as a trainee manager in the retail sector for many years. Following a year working in New Zealand selling plants, Richard developed an interest in New Zealand natives. On his return and now working in the wholesale plant sector, Richard was oﬀered an opportunity to set up Wyevale East Nurseries, the precursor to Provender Nurseries. After 13 years at the same site, Provender Nurseries continues to go from strength to strength under Richard’s enthusiasm and drive. An enthusiastic speaker on plants, how they grow and how to buy properly, Richard is well versed to cover plant procurement at FutureScape.

ADAM DUNNETT

Sales & Marketing Director Wyevale Nurseries Adam has worked for a number of UK nurseries in both production and sales roles gaining over 25 years’ horticultural experience. Adam completed his apprenticeship at Ellis Brothers Nurseries, Evesham, before joining Jardinerie Garden Centres and then attending Pershore College. He spent his middle year at Webbs of Wychbold and stayed there for 13 years, eventually becoming nursery director. He then moved on to become the group plant buyer at Blooms Garden centres for three years and when Blooms was bought by The Garden Centre Group he became its plant buyer, a role he held for seven years. SHOW MANAGER, RHS HAMPTON COURT PALACE FLOWER SHOW Dave Green is show manager for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and has been working at the RHS since 2009. After time spent at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Dave joined the RHS as a trainee and went on to become a horticulturist at RHS Garden Wisley. After a period at Kirtsenbosch Botanic Gardens in Cape Town, Dave joined the RHS Shows team in 2012 and was involved in managing the RHS Chelsea Flower Show before moving to become the overall show manager for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Show.

OWNER, THE OUTDOOR ROOM David started in the industry as an apprentice gardener in 1987, going on to obtain the National Diploma in Landscape Design & Construction at Merrist Wood College ﬁve years later. In 1995 David founded The Outdoor Room with one simple goal in mind: to create beautiful gardens of unbeatable standards. Both David’s parents were teachers, so education has always been a high priority. He has lectured on garden design and constuction at Merrist Wood and Inchbald School of Design and regularly gives workshops and lectures for the various industry organisations including BALI, SGD and the RHS. In 2012, David became chairman of BALI’s South Thames region and in 2015 was elected as a director on the BALI National Board. David has been responsible for building many award-winning gardens, including 18 RHS medal-winning Show Gardens and nine BALI National Awards.

Rae Wilkinson is an award-winning landscape designer based in Sussex and works throughout the South East. She provides sophisticated classic and modern design with a naturalistic feel. Sustainability and informed planting design combine with a naturally creative approach to the landscape. Originally from an artistic background, Rae worked in soft landscaping with top designers for many years before moving into design herself nine years ago.

As managing director of Frosts Landscapes Construction, Ken is responsible for the strategic direction of the company. Ken has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, training at the Royal Botanic Garden’s Edinburgh and Kew. Working abroad for various leading designers, his ability to gain the best from the people he works alongside has led him to his ongoing involvement with WorldSkills competitions.

There is nothing Jamie loves more than being outside working with plants, an obsession that has grown and grown. He is currently the joint show plant manager at Hortus Loci nurseries, which truly is a dream come true for him. Prior to this, Jamie graduated from the RHS Wisley Diploma (with distinction). In addition to this, he is an associate director for YoungHort, working to change the perception that young people have of horticulture, and show them just how fun, exciting and diverse our industry actually is.

This small garden represented an inner courtyard; a place to connect with nature, to sit and relax and drink a cup of tea. It was inspired by the modern oriental style within Asian architecture and explored the use of a small garden space both functionally and visually. Carlow Blue Limestone paving was used for the walkway and seating area to contrast with the planting. A pool of water reflected the sky, helping to give the garden a feeling of being bigger. The planting scheme was essentially simplistic, containing only a few varieties of plants and no flowers; focusing on green tonal values with the emphasis on foliage texture and form. Bamboo added a leafy background to provide privacy and to soften the area. Acer palmatum provided structure and seasonal changes and was under planted with grasses and ferns.
