NEWS SHED

The Cape Town Flower Show will bloom again – this time in a new home at Sun International’s GrandWest in Goodwood, Cape Town from 19 to 22 October 2017. Following the successful inaugural Cape Town Flower Show held at The Castle of Good Hope in October 2016, event organisers, Growth Events (Pty) Ltd believes that a very strong foundation has been built for the show to grow from strength to strength. CALLING ALL GARDEN DESIGNERS AND LANDSCAPERS The show gardens at the 2016 Cape Town Flower Show were definitely the draw card for the visitors who flocked to the show. So, The Cape Town Flower Show is now asking the landscaping industry to register interest in participating in the show – for making a garden, showing garden concepts or of course creating functional gardens to inspire the show’s visitors, particularly given the drought situation and our need to be extremely water-wise these days. Karey Evett, CEO of Growth Events said, “Last year we saw some really interesting collaborations between designer, landscaper and suppliers, all working together to achieve the most exciting gardens. We offer landscapers the space for free, so they can team up with their own suppliers and sponsors to create something wonderful.” Show Gardens PM, Paul Odendaal commented, “This year is going to be even more about creating water-wise gardens and educating the visitors to the show. We also want to see show garden designs that are relevant, edgy, urban and functional.” Landscapers can submit their interest by contacting the Event PM, Penny Sparrowhawk on penny@ctflowershow. co.za or call the show office 021 823 4000.

AMB ITIOUS GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION S COMMI TME N T APPROVED BY SCIENCE BASED TARGETS I N I TI A TI VE

Husqvarna Group is the world’s first forest and garden company, to have its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative. The Science Based Target Initiative works with companies to set ambitious emission reduction targets, consistent with a global effort to keep temperature increases well below 2°C, one of the key goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. The initiative is a collaboration of The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), UN Global Compact, CDP and World Resources Institute (WRI). The Husqvarna Group has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 10 percent across the company’s value chain by 2020 from a base year of 2015. The absolute greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 33 percent by 2035, also from a base year of 2015.* “Our greenhouse gas reduction targets are ambitious, measurable and now also independently approved. We aim to reduce

www.prolandscaper.co.za

our emissions throughout the value chain – from our suppliers to the use of our products. Delivering on these targets not only strengthens our business, it delivers value to employees, customers and investors alike. Setting the targets and getting approval by the Science Based Targets initiative, demonstrates that we’re serious and committed to contributing to a low-carbon future,” says Kai Wärn, CEO and President of Husqvarna Group. Lila Karbassi, Chief, Programmes, UN Global Compact, one of the Science Based Targets initiative partners says, “Husqvarna Group has recognized the opportunity – and the imperative – to be part of the transition to the low-carbon economy. By having their ambitious target approved, they now have a clearly defined pathway to cut their emissions and this will help future-proof their growth. Other companies that have set targets have seen benefits including increased innovation, reduced regulatory uncertainty, strengthened investor confidence and improved profitability

and competitiveness. We encourage other companies to follow Husqvarna’s lead.” Husqvarna Group will reduce greenhouse gases across the value chain by: Product use • Shift from petrol to battery products. • Innovative solutions for efficiency improvement of petrol driven products. Transportation • Production close to customer & direct distribution. • Efficient transportation through optimised packaging. Manufacturing • Waste reduction through a lean operating system. • Utilising renewable electricity and/or own generated energy by solar panels • Sourcing Embedding the TOP 150 suppliers into the Group´s CO2 program to ensure full value chain impact. www.husqvarna.co.za

2017 COROBRIK-ILASA AWARDS OF EXCE L L E N CE CALL FOR ENTRIES: DEADLINE 31 MARCH ILASA AWARDS ETHOS Landscape Architecture is more than a profession; it is a basic component of human culture. The ILASA Merit Awards of Excellence aims to exemplify best practice examples that are clear in their intent and relevant to their specific context. We are faced with particular social challenges in a country with extraordinary biodiversity, rich in resources but in need of conserving what we have. Projects should clearly demonstrate how they add value to the landscape, specifically in aspects of social or ecological health and well-being, but preferably encompassing both these aspects. EXCELLENCE PROMOTED The aim of the Corobrik-ILASA Awards of

From 09h00 – 15h00

Excellence is to acknowledge and promote excellence in landscape architecture. Promotion is achieved through media coverage of the project entries. ILASA further makes use of the project images on our webpage and in promotional brochures to prospective students and our peers in other professions. All material that is submitted will be retained by the Institute as part of its library. The projects obtaining Awards of Excellence will be acknowledged by means of the presentation of a certificate as well as media coverage. An Award of Excellence is not given on a competition basis but based on merit; all types of projects from large complete projects to small specialist projects may be entered. ADVISE

A 4 PART TECHNICAL GUIDE BY CLAY BRICK ASSOCIATION Clay pavers have been used in streets, sidewalks, paths and plazas for hundreds of years. They are chosen for their durability, long-lasting colour, small scale, and ability to blend in with the surrounding area. While these are all desirable traits, more recent awareness of the needs of people with disabilities has refocused attention on other attributes of paving surfaces. Accessibility is particularly important for people with limited mobility whether they are in wheelchairs or using crutches or walking aids as well as those with poor vision. It is also important that social infrastructure allows for people pushing prams, trolleys, large waste bins or wheeled pallet hand-trucks. This is Part 1 of a 4 part segment related to the design, construction and maintenance of pavements constructed of brick pavers.

Segmented Small Pavers vs Large Slabs. Pavements using segmental pavers behave differently from monolithic concrete slabs. It is often assumed that large slabs are superior to segmental paver pavements because they have fewer joints. In fact, the amount of work required for wheelchair users to cross segmental pavements may be less than for other pavement types. A frequent criticism of segmental pavements is that they have too many joints, which result in more vibrations to wheelchair users. However, vibration measurements conclude that the narrow joints in segmental pavements result in less severe vibrations than control joints in concrete slabs. Limiting bevel or joint size results in improved

performance for all wheeled vehicles. There is a misconception that pavers become loose or misaligned over time, creating a tripping hazard. In fact, a segmental pavement will provide smoother surface transitions than the abrupt changes in level that occur i n monolithic concrete. More joints mean smaller incremental changes between pavers. Pavers around street trees can become uneven due to growing roots forcing the pavers upward. Segmental pavers are easier to repair than poured concrete, resulting in simpler and less costly maintenance. For further information: The Clay Brick Association of South Africa www.claybrick.org

PRECAST CONCRETE SOLUTIONS FOR LANDSCAPERS While precast concrete provides landscapers with a wide range of solutions to stabilise ground, lend an aesthetically pleasing character to their projects or provide drainage, it is important to note that not all precast concrete is equal. Landscapers should take note of the quality requirements that are called-for onsite and should select products that are sourced from professional suppliers belonging to the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA). While any supplier can manufacture precast concrete products, only CMA members are bound by a code of practice that defines how the product will be brought to market. This includes best practices for the manufacture of concrete, quality assurance, as well as determination of fair pricing, sales and aftermarket support for products. While these

www.prolandscaper.co.za

undertakings are not yet formally enforced, any failure by members to comply with the association’s code of ethics may lead to their membership being revoked or suspended. ‘Dealing with a company that is committed to upholding CMA values should act as some reassurance when procuring precast concrete products that do not require compliance with a SANS specification or where custommade products are being cast by a concrete manufacturer specifically for a landscaper’s project. Where national standards are required it is advisable to insist on products that bear the CMA Certification Services (CMA CS) mark of approval. The association’s certification service is one of only two authorised bodies that can provide marks of approval for precast concrete products in South Africa says CMA director Frans Minnaar.’ www.cma.org.za

Q: How important is it to be association affiliated?

Anja Freysen

N.Dip Horticulture/Landscape Technician GIBB Engineering & Architecture

Construction Manager & Senior Maintenatnce Manager Urban Landscape Solutions

Qualifying as a Horticulturist in 2004 & working alongside a number of registered Landscape Architects over the last 15 years, I have grown to understand how important it is to be registered and affiliated with SACLAP & ILASA.

As a supplier to the landscaping industry, we at Shadowlands come into contact with hundreds of people working in the garden industry.

Professionals or companies may ask themselves “Why should I join this particular association or what can this association do for me?” Even these most commonly asked questions “ associated “ with associations in most cases still do not provide the answers we seek. Being professionally associated is important for the following reasons:

For me, being registered with SACLAP creates the opportunity to be part of an organisation to which I am accountable too, to uphold their mission statement & what they stand for. Being affiliated with an association such as ILASA means having constant communication about what’s happening with in the industry & being provided with a platform in which one can network with like-minded professionals. ILASA creates opportunities to better oneself in your profession & broaden your knowledge within the landscape industry. The importance of being affiliated is that is allows a member to be part of a profession at national government level within the South African society in terms of the professional role in effecting aesthetic improvement, planning for ecologically sustainable landscapes for the benefit of man and the environment.

Sadly, not all of these people are delivering the quality and service our clients expect or deserve. There are many “contractors” that rely on their suppliers for plant and planning information, openly admitting they don’t know much about plants, but got the job anyway. While it is certainly not the intention to take the bread off somebody’s table, it is high time that the landscaping industry works to set a regulatory standard by which the quality of our service can be gauged. This is essential out of fairness to our clients and fellow landscapers. As Ryan Pembroke said in last month’s AGENDA, the “bakkie brigade” makes it increasingly difficult for the more established contractors to compete in the market. Undercutting prices, poor plant quality and uninformed planning create a very bad image for the industry, making the client suspicious and mistrusting of the industry as a whole. I firmly believe that our industry should be more regulated, and most importantly, that our potential clients be informed of these regulations and guidelines to make the right choice when appointing a landscaper.

Maintains industry standards: Industry institutions set the industry standards and have a code of conduct. Applicants for membership are screened and evaluated before becoming registered members. For example, top landscaping companies in South Africa belong to SALI (South African Landscape Institute). Clients are protected if these standards are not met, and can approach these governing bodies if there is a dispute to resolve. Unifies an industry: and is the voice of industry professionals in the public arena. All principal members are guided by the same code of conduct, all members are inclined to use the same standard of specifications set forth by the association, and standard documentation is used throughout the organisation. Knowledge: an association offers courses, seminars and skills development programs to keep themselves and their members up to date on the latest innovations within an industry. Boosts a Companies profile: listing your association membership/s can prove to be a

Associations also brand and market their members through publicity such as on websites, advertising and at events. Networking: Making connections and networking through social interaction at meetings, conferences and workshops is critical in any business and associations provide countless opportunities for this. Leadership and mentoring: Associations give you an opportunity to develop your skills as a leader and can provide you with the tools to mentor others. Ultimately, associations assist in fulfilling the goal of good business practice.

Johan Barnard Principal at Newtown Landscape Architects cc. In the past, affiliations focused mainly on creating an awareness of their existence and promoting their position. As associations grow in numbers the focus must shift towards building capacity and developing newer, younger members. Associations must develop in order to demonstrate the ability to cater to the demands of the growing business community. Collaboration is also essential – placing lobby groups together on issues such as Sustainability or Greening. This is becoming more evident in the Built Environment as associations are required to deal www.prolandscaper.co.za

with similar legal frameworks and Government regulations. It is therefore imperative for young professionals and people new to the industry to join their respective associations. I believe the greatest value lies in creating a forum for gathering with peers and discussing issues at hand. We often try and reinvent the wheel within our own organizations due to a lack of awareness that colleagues are addressing similar issues. Associations should play a greater role in developing, training and mentoring their members. This is what the SETA’s set out to accomplish, but it has not penetrated all sectors equally. It is encouraging to see that Landscape Architects and Landscape Contractors are again setting up a forum for communication and sharing. In addition, by expanding registration to include Landscape Managers, a larger pool of associations can be drawn upon. Encouraging individuals to participate from the early stages of their careers is still a challenge the usual faces are still seen at events - but we must not stop trying.

Dez Whitehead Operations Director, SALI SALI was formed by a group of landscapers who believed that the true potential of the landscaping industry could only be realized if landscapers showed unity, produced excellent work and worked with professionalism and integrity. Over the years SALI has grown consistently

and remains the only standards body, national representative and voice for landscaping professionals in South Africa. SALI consists of a vast network of principal landscapers, selected suppliers and companies associated to the landscaping industry throughout South Africa who are guided by the SALI Constitution and Code of Conduct. SALI members endeavour to improve the standard of the landscaping industry by adhering to the Minimum Specifications laid down by SALI and by so doing, ensure clients get increased value and professionalism you can trust. Regular joint South African Green Industry Council (SAGIC) meetings provide the opportunity for other role-players in the industry to meet and review their relationship with one another and strengthen the industry as a whole. SALI has been the prime mover in promoting education and training in the landscape industry and works in close conjunction with the TUT, CPUT, DUT in this regard. We have also been pro-active in developing Unit Standards for training of landscaping staff through AGRISETA. Going through the process to become a member and being regulated is one of the ways in which we elevate our profession.

GARDENS BY THE BAY

G

ardens by the Bay was launched as an international design competition by the National Parks Board of Singapore in early 2006. The brief was to create a tropical garden experience that would become a prime recreation and leisure facility for Singaporeans whilst delivering a global tourist attraction. The brief for the 54ha site of Bay South included a requirement for 2ha of cooled conservatories with associated external gardens offering a display of innovative horticulture, educational opportunities and spaces for events and play. There was no specific need for structures such as the supertrees; these evolved as part of Grant Associates’ response to the challenge. Gardens by the Bay is one of the largest garden projects of its kind in the world. The project is an integral part of Singapore’s ‘City in a Garden’ vision, designed to raise the profile of the city globally whilst showcasing the best of horticulture in the context of urban greening. Ultimately, the site will total 101ha, comprising three distinct gardens: Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. Located on reclaimed land in Singapore’s downtown Marina Bay, the site provides a unique leisure destination for local and international visitors. Inspired by the form of Singapore’s national flower the orchid, Grant Associates’ masterplan is a blend of nature, technology and environmental management. Iconic architectural structures are combined with a variety of horticultural displays, daily light and sound shows, lakes, forests, event spaces and a host of dining and retail offerings. The whole plan has an intelligent environmental infrastructure, allowing endangered plants which could not normally grow in Singapore to flourish, providing both leisure and education.

Supertrees Between 25-50m in height, the 18 supertrees designed by Grant Associates are iconic vertical gardens, with emphasis placed on creating a ‘wow’ factor through the vertical display of tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns. At night, these canopies come alive with lighting and projected media. An aerial walkway suspended from the supertrees offers visitors a unique perspective on the gardens. The supertrees are embedded with sustainable energy and water technologies integral to the cooling of the conservatories. Cooled conservatories Two giant biomes designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects – the 1.2ha Flower Dome and the 0.8ha Cloud Forest Dome – display plants and flowers from the Mediterranean climatic regions and tropical montane (cloud forest) environments, and provide an all-weather ‘edutainment’ space within the gardens. Horticultural gardens Two collections, The Heritage Gardens and The World of Plants, centre on ‘Plants and People’ and ‘Plants and Planet’. Together with mass flowering and coloured foliage landscape, they form a spectacle of colour and texture and fragrance within the gardens, providing a mesmerising experience for visitors. From the point of view of the project team, procuring the plants for the scheme proved a huge logistical challenge. National Parks was responsible for this aspect, sourcing plants from every continent apart from Antarctica. Around 200,000 varieties were ultimately shipped to the site. From Grant Associates’ point of view, each stage of the project involved challenges and new learning experiences. At competition stage, the focus was about bringing together the right team of consultants and personalities who could contribute to delivering a world class proposal. An example of one challenge was to deliver an air conditioned glasshouse in the tropics while retaining environmental credibility. In the early design stages, collaboration in the most creative sense was the key process, not just with the design team but also with the client and other Singapore stakeholders. Grant Associates needed to learn fast about Singapore, its culture, environment and the methods of delivering new landscapes in a tropical climate. As the design evolved, Grant Associates forged new ways of working with local consultants and contractors who approached the construction process in a very different way compared to that of UK businesses.

The planting palette contained indigenous species loosely defined by the landscape design guidelines of Boskloof Eco Estate, whose restrained use and structural form could emulate the serene layered planting style synonymous with oriental gardens. A staggered grouping of three Acacia xanthophloea (Fever trees) were selected to provide the upper tier of layered planting. Two mid height second tier planting combinations of firstly Elegia tectorum and Aulux bronze haze blured the transition of opposing planes of landscape and property with the second grouping of dietes bicolor, Aloe striata and Aloe tenor repeated to provide rhythm and balance to the setting. A final third tier of Crassula multicava ‘red’ and Arctotis Witkoppen Red ground covers combined with the repeated selections to complete the planting palette. These were unfortunately a fond food source of the estates free roaming Grey Duikers and after experimenting with several alternative planting combinations found the selection of Chlorophyton saudersiae and Helichrysum teretifolium to be Duiker proof and complimentary to the concept of the planting palette.

The wall pool garden followed the same aesthetic as the front garden with stained hardwood decking providing the smooth exterior circulation between property rooms, pool and descending stairway to rear garden. A small rectangular section of lawn (Stenotaphrum secundatum) offered a soft surface next to the pool and grey in-situ concrete sun terrace. The planting scheme emulated that of the front garden with seven Brachylaena discolor trees established outside the walled garden to provide privacy from neighbouring properties and their silvery grey appearance merging with the tonal accent of the property. Descending the stairway, the rear garden extends to the bank of the estates dam revealing the breathtaking panorama of False Bay. The brief aimed at a less contrived space that unified the existing indigenously planted bordering communal areas and utilising surface materials already employed to incite a sense of continuity throughout the landscape scheme. The lawn terrace is bordered by broad graveled circulatory pathways defined by retaining timber edging. The pathways connected the stairway of the southern passageway and followed the line of the ungraded stone gabion walls retaining the adjacent soil embankment, descending via nine timber framed steps to the waters edge of the dam. The emphasis of the planting scheme followed a combination of existing neighbouring

others. All the stone used was reclaimed – some from old roof tiles, others from off-cuts or builder’s waste. At the top of the riverbed, a ‘waterfall’ of succulents’ cascaded down a stone wall. These hardy plants need almost no water and are the embodiment of drought tolerant planting. The bamboo deck overlooking the riverbed is the most environmentally sustainable decking available – by a long way! It is highly durable, fire resistant and fully certified to European standards. It’s also the only decking that is CO2 neutral. A broad pathway enters one side of the garden, floats over the riverbed, past the deck and exits through the opposite side. Although the pavers are staggered unevenly to keep the pathway gentle on the eye, Cape Contours wanted them to be strong and sturdy. The pavers featured are mushroom grey and suited the contemporary design perfectly. Thin slate packed gabion walls framed within slick steel that extends into a pergola adds a modern touch to the use of this natural material. Inter-planted with more succulents and edged with ornamental grasses softens the feel just enough to keep the strong lines balanced with the organic theme. The fibre-cement seating by Gallant Stone, weighs in at only 30kg each, so their size and solid boulder-like look is deceptive. Yet the soft and inviting shape requires no more than to kick off your shoes to relax into the setting. To keep with the impressionistic and contemporary theme, the steel pergola is edged with a vertical row of tensile cables, which light up at night to create the impression of rain framing the garden. The lighting design includes gorgeous pathway lamps and features spots to light up the riverbed, succulent wall, trees and seating area.

SUPER NATURAL ANTHEA HARRISON Anthea Harrison put her stamp on this grand four-year project with a natural swimming pool and swathes of beautiful planting

W

hen garden designer Anthea Harrison first met the clients back in April 2012 they were living in an unattractive house on the site they were looking to develop. The existing house was due to be knocked down and a significantly larger and more traditional looking property built in its place. They were passionate about their garden, regular Chelsea goers and wanted lots of planting. Other features to be included were a new driveway and main entrance, a walled kitchen garden with greenhouse, a main seating area plus several smaller ones, a swimming pool, hot tub and changing rooms and an open pavilion. An old

tennis court was to be replaced with a new one in a similar position, and the house benefited from some fabulous mature trees. Design and build At the initial consultation Anthea persuaded the clients to look again at their requirement for a swimming pool. They had requested a traditional pool at the side of the house. Instead Anthea suggested a natural swimming pool as the main feature to the rear of the property, with everything else arranged around it. The initial concept was to divide the filtration bed and the main body of water connecting the two with a rill leading from one part of the garden to another.

After approval for the concept and sizes of these water bodies from natural pool company Gartenart, the idea was fine-tuned to incorporate a water feature starting at the main dining patio which would use the filtration bed to keep the water clean. A ‘hot’ garden, including the sunken hot tub and most of the Corten steel panels, separates the pool from the ‘strolling’ garden, a large area of planting with intertwining paths leading to a wrought iron gazebo. This area helps the garden blend in with the countryside as it is more informal and features a number of the new trees that were planted on site. Water flows from the swimming pool via a rill which steps down through a series of waterfalls to a large circular seating area at the side of the house which is partially surrounded by the filtration bed. Stepping stones through the filtration bed maintain access and views to the strolling garden. The kitchen garden features a built in BBQ, pizza oven, sink and cupboards and is between the house and main dining patio. There was only one location really suitable for the walled garden, although its proximity to a large tree and its roots caused some issues. The whole garden is blended into the countryside setting through trees and planting,

42 Pro Landscaper Africa / March 2017

the aim in the long term is for the yew hedging to make the pool more private and to help divide the garden. The result is a stunning space that has really excelled in giving the clients multiple areas to entertain and plenty of space for their teenage children to enjoy with friends. They had a garden opening party and said they used every area including retiring at the end of the day to the open pavilion for cheese and coffee.

Problems, issues and their solutions There were several large trees on site which had to be given special consideration and all the landscaping plans had to be approved by the local planning authority. In particular the root protection zone of the Blue Atlas Cedar near to the house was enormous. The whole site is in a conservation area and one tree in particular caused a headache with the garden walls. The tree was misshapen and close to the end of its life so an application was made to remove it. The structural engineer also worked to find some solutions, but by the time it came to building the walls permission had been granted to fell the tree. The soil became an issue after the phenomenal excavation works for the pool and basement of the house. Everything within about 20m of these turned to 1m-deep slushy clay. In the end there was no choice but to wholesale remove the affected areas and import top soil, continually checking drainage. It took some time to agree with the client the exact nature of the Corten steel panels in the walled garden so this batted to and fro for a while, but otherwise the client was enthused and stuck to the original concept of the design which was very rewarding,

www.prolandscaper.co.za

especially given the number of plants put in – over 5,000 perennials, grasses and shrubs and about 20 trees. The project in all from concept to completion took nearly four years and through this time numbers of drawings were issued and revised once the builders were on site.
