Happy New Year to all our readers, advertisers and many industry friends. 2014 kicks off a great year for Eljays44, the publishers of Pro Landscaper; as we have moved into new premises to accommodate the growing team on the magazine, and the staff we have recruited for all the new projects we have planned for this coming year. We hope our experience is replicated within the landscape industry and that the ‘seeds of recovery’ continue to flourish and prosper. No doubt landscapers will get some disruption which is usually accepted during the winter season, but we sincerely hope it will be short lived and that on the whole, 2014 will be very successful for you all. the start of a new, regular column for the RHS, which will be updating us on the goings on within the Society on a monthly basis, see page 15 for January’s news. Phil Jones looks at how we react business wise to the new year and see our delightful interview with Andrew Fisher Tomlin, in which he talks about his experience of being an RHS judge, working abroad and his company’s extensive charity work. With the SGD awards approaching, we include two of the shortlisted projects in our portfolio section, which will hopefully provide an insight and some inspiration for creating award winning projects. As usual, we look forward to getting out to see as many of you as possible at events and awards in 2014, it’s possibly the best part of our job!

Sir David Attenborough warns of impact loss of green space on children Children are losing touch with nature because too many green areas within schools are being built on, Sir David Attenborough told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme recently. He said too many schools are responding to pressure for places by building new classrooms
on playing fields and areas originally set aside for nature study and that many British children no longer have the opportunity to experience nature in the way he did when he was growing up, when the population of the UK was around 10 per cent less than today.

Greenfingers plan for woodland walk at Sussex hospice GREENFINGERS CHARITY APPEAL Greenfingers, the UK charity dedicated to creating magical gardens at children’s hospices around the country, is hoping to start work in early 2014 on an inspirational woodland walk for the children and families who use Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice in Arundel in West Sussex to enjoy. Renowned garden designer Ann-Marie Powell, who sits on the Greenfingers Garden Experts Group and is also local to the project, is leading the design team working on the project. The main aim of the project is to create a fully accessible, engaging walkway through a beautiful piece of woodland that is already at the site. As the Greenfingers team is hoping to break ground on the project very early in 2014 Emma Hanford, Garden Projects Manager for Greenfingers, is aiming to galvanise local companies to get involved and help out for such a worthy cause. Speaking about the garden Emma said: ‘Our main objective at Chestnut Tree House is to create an enchanting woodland walk that is accessible to every single child who uses the hospice – allowing all the children, their carers www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Greenfingers.indd 9
and family members to spend precious time together in a natural environment. We all take for granted the simple pleasures of walking in the woods and enjoying the outside world, but for some of the children who use this hospice that is not something they can easily do – we want to empower the young people at Chestnut Tree House and give them an awe-inspiring space to relax and be themselves in.’ Emma continued to explain how they envisage the walk taking shape; ‘We want the entrance to the walk to feel like a portal into another world – a world where these kids can forget their everyday lives – and a world that is very natural. All the features and points of interest we are building in to the walk will be from natural materials, in keeping with the woodland and encouraging the children to get stuck in to nature.’ The charity is also hoping to include a treehouse in the woodland walk that will be a peaceful place for relaxation and contemplation for the children. Greenfingers is hoping to urgently secure gifts in kind donations for a number of elements in the project
from local businesses and others in the horticultural industry who are moved to get involved with the garden. If you would like to get involved in the project at Chestnut Tree House and could supply any of the following for free or at a heavily discounted rate, please do get in touch with the charity Greenfingers directly. ● Accessible seating and tables ● Wooden carvings and sculptures ● Signage ● Bug boxes and hides ● Resin bonded bark ● Tubing to create tunnels ● Aggregates
The garden walkway at Chestnut Tree House hospice will be the 42nd garden to be built by Greenfingers. This garden will be built as part of the charity’s Rosy Cheeks Appeal, which aims to build at least ten more gardens at children’s hospices around the UK over the next two years. All Greenfingers gardens are aimed at
providing beautiful and inspiring outdoors spaces for children with life-limiting conditions to enjoy with family, friends and siblings, whether through play and fun, or therapeutic rest and relaxation. The charity is driven by the belief that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment.
To get involved in and donate supplies to the Chestnut Tree House project please call Greenfingers on 01494 674 749 or email hannah@ greenfingerscharity.org.uk. Pro Landscaper will be supporting Greenfingers in 2014, and the whole team plan to provide manual labour to help create the woodland walk. January 2014

Following the design and completion of several projects, a designer is encouraged to present their work at an ‘appraisal’ where the nature as well as the quality of the work is assessed and feedback and guidance are given to help progress towards full membership. An application for full membership has previously required a candidate to present a comprehensive folio of three
constructed projects, at interview. From January 2014, a new system will be in operation. Instead of three projects being required at one time, candidates can submit their work on an individual basis. There will be no time limit between submissions; however a candidate will not be given member status until all three have reached the required standards (landscape architects may qualify by submitting only two projects).

Phil Jones takes an optimistic approach to thinking about the new year, asking, does a new year necessarily have to mean big changes in a company? 2
Yet another new year is upon us! It should always be simple to find words for a column in the first month of a new year, there is so much to look forward to, so much to speculate about. Many people are already in print with their thoughts relating to their outlook for 2014. Most things I have read about this relate to economic forecasts, health of order books, wealth of the industry and ‘how we all feel generally’. I was fortunate to take part in the View From the Top debate in November, as part of FutureScape, which in part focused on what the panellists’ views of next year were at the time. These ranged from pessimistic to boldly optimistic, the latter being my approach. Being part of a great company like ISS breeds tremendous optimism, whatever time of the year it is. Does the new year necessarily have to mean a change? Is it imperative to do something different? Can we instil greater optimism in those who are clearly downbeat about their own business prospects in 2014? It is perhaps understandable that we all too often see the new year as an opportunity to make a fresh start in business. We can be drawn into thinking that we must have a different outlook or a renewed strategy because the calendar has clicked over from December to

January, essentially one day on from ‘last year’. I must have been asked more than a dozen times in the last few weeks what I am going to do differently in or for 2014. My answers have ranged from personal goals if appropriate for the question, to detailed strategy for a more business biased questioner. Well, if the strategy implementation is working well, why change? For a number of years now I have been working with my senior team in ISS, formulating and implementing our plan for the future. This is working extremely well and our successes within the business demonstrate to us and the market that we are absolutely on the right path. Sometimes it is our energy and approach that needs a freshen up, rather than us needing a complete change in what we intend to do. I find that there is a need to look at the way I do business, as well as work with robust plans and strategies. If we have the right team around us we should be able to come up with a suitable plan, process and intended outcome, whether it’s a new year or whatever month it is. What I believe sets people apart these days, is the way they carry out their business and how they affect others in achieving their goals. For example, I think it would be much better to look at how we can support our stakeholders and help others, whilst we work hard to achieve our business goals, taking those business goals as read. In ISS this means we have put our weight behind various charities, including Gardening Leave, supporting veterans through horticultural therapy, and the British Heart Foundation. Having read recently that record numbers 3 of horticulturalists are turning to Perennial,
the Gardeners Benevolent Society, for assistance, this could be one avenue down which to channel our efforts for the new year. So, in this exciting new year, by all means change if you think your business is on the wrong track. If not, be prepared to look at your approach on a wider scale and channel your energies into making a difference in areas you may not have considered before. Refresh yourself, renew your vigour, re-ignite your enthusiasm if you need to – but if the strategy is working and you’re going in the right direction, give yourself a shot of optimism by adding to what you achieve purely through your business. 1 ISS volunteers and Gardening Leave in the completed East Acton Garden. 2 The cake given to ISS as a thank you. 3 Phil Jones on the View From the Top panel at FutureScape 2013.

On a smaller scale and following on from last month’s article, electric power tools are becoming more prevalent. An interesting addition to these is a range of compressed air units developed for harvesting olives but now available to power chainsaws, strimmers, hedge cutters and power pruners. Whilst the majority of the equipment shown was not applicable to our industry, the technology and future direction still has relevance, albeit on a much smaller scale. If you do plan to visit this event don’t get too excited as it next happens in November 2015, but that gives plenty of time to get in training and invest in a good pair of walking shoes – you’ll need them!

Should landscape architects be worried? Andrew Wilson has spoken several times in this column about the differences between garden designers and landscape architects, but recent events have focused his mind
I came away from the Landscape Institute Awards in November 2013 with mixed views. The winning schemes seemed upbeat, I thought, compared to previous years and I even warmed to Wayne Hemingway’s presentation although the overall message from the Landscape Institute seemed ambiguous – a non-landscape designer telling landscape designers about landscape design! Planting design seemed better represented too – another bugbear of mine in public spaces. But at the back of my mind other messages were surfacing that hinted at a change of scenery ahead. The worry, for landscape architects that is, related to the announcement that week that Dan Pearson’s design for Handyside Gardens had opened in the King’s Cross development, and that the Thomas Heatherwick garden bridge across the Thames in central London was open for planning comment using Dan Pearson Studio as the planting designers. Across to the west of London, garden designer Andy Sturgeon had secured a five acre public park and public square as part of the Earl’s Court redevelopment. The garden designer, it would seem, has leapt the fence into the public domain, taking work from under the noses of landscape architects. 20
January 2014
Andrew Wilson.indd 20
It would be easy to say that these are relatively small considerations in the global scale of things, but in a world in which architects are edging landscape design out of the frame and urban designers are taking over larger scale landscape planning the rise of the garden designer in public or semi-public space design could be of some concern. Once again it struck me how little the world at large knows of or appreciates landscape architecture. It remains an anonymous profession, often playing second fiddle to other professionals such as architects who generally get their foot in the door first. But one might also ask the question as to how two garden designers have won major, high profile schemes such as these? Both of these designers have benefited from a series of successes at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Once landscape architects have finished their annual snigger at the gardenesque nature of the exhibits perhaps they might like to consider the worldwide audience and media coverage that this show attracts, unrivalled in virtually any other field. Both Dan and Andy have also exploited TV careers and journalistic writing creating a wider following and a presence that developers, architects and clients might well turn to when thinking about commissioning a designer. Do they worry that they are employing a garden designer rather than a landscape architect? Do they know or understand the difference? Perhaps they should but they probably don’t.
Thomas Heatherwick’s Garden Bridge
The whole subject raises questions about the future of landscape architecture as a professional discipline because if clients go elsewhere there won’t be much of a profession left. It also raises the issue of education – a long and involved process for what in the end? The truth of the matter is that neither of these two named designers is working alone as a sole trader in the traditional way. They head up growing practices that employ landscape architects, graduates who have chosen this particular route into a workplace with a garden and planting design emphasis and ethos. The rewards both in the UK and overseas are tremendous as Dan’s justified SGD Award in 2012 for the Tokachi Millennium Forest in northern Japan testifies – a project covering some 240ha. Is this the way forward? As my mate Noel Farrer prepares to take on the Presidency of the Landscape Institute this year, perhaps it is a question to which he should devote some careful thought.

Business Tips
Marketing while you work Never forget: your job is completely and utterly dependent on customers
With the declining economy tightening the purse strings of both consumers and businesses, it’s important to get as much business as you can from the customers who are already spending on your services, explains Margaret McNeil This strategy of focusing on selling extra to your customers is also key to growth and is more efficient than trying to attract new customers by shelling out on an expensive marketing campaign. These customers already like and trust you – you don’t have to convince them to give you a try! In fact if you spot things that they need to do and don’t tell them, you’re not really giving them a good service. ‘Marketing’ is not a role that is done by just specialists. As the people ‘at the coal face’ you are the face of the business and are in a position to know more about what the client needs than anyone at head office. If you give your customers incredible service from the start, they’ll continue to buy from you. ‘Just enough’ is not good enough. You can encourage customers to buy something extra or upgrade. Are you the supplier of grit for the snow clearing? Are you the snow clearer in the first place? Does a fence look dodgy? Quote for a replacement. Say hello whenever you can. You want your customers to think of you when they are thinking of additional needs. If you have regular (can be short) contact, they will ask for your advice as you are in front of them. Get to know your customers and their needs If you can engage with your customers you can get to know what they like and offer them services that suit their needs. You have to know first, and the only way you do this is by engaging with the customer. Try to add value to what you are doing. Is there a little extra you can do or give that will impress the client? There are things that cost little but mean a lot – the chocolate on your www.prolandscapermagazine.com

If not a written one, then you should be in touch with all your clients on a regular basis to check that they are happy. It’s during these communications that you may discover they have plans that you can be a

Act on the feedback too – it’s no good finding out information but not doing anything with it! Staff on site are the ones who can have their ear to the ground – if you manage a team, ask them for suggestions. If you are one of the team, go the extra mile where you can. If you work on one site, try to become part of the bigger team. Take part in fundraising events etc. You want the client to think you are in it for more than the money! Appearance matters; we all know that. Ensure your appearance and attitude are spot
on at all times. A sloppy appearance might be an indicator of sloppy work. A cavalier attitude might indicate lack of seriousness about the job. The same goes for health and safety. The client should be thinking that you always do things properly – it’s what they pay you to do.

Designing small gardens Designing small gardens involves making use of every centimetre of space, and using visual tricks to make the garden seem larger, explains Linsey Evans
Clients usually think a plan is not necessary when they are landscaping a very small garden; this is absolutely not true. It is especially important to prepare a plan where space is limited to ensure that the finished garden meets the practical requirements and looks great too.The plan must be millimetre accurate as there is no room for adjustment if it is found to be incorrect during construction. When designing a small garden a simple layout with clean lines and strong geometric shapes works best; the design should not be overly complicated. It’s tempting to scale down the garden features to avoid cluttering the space, but this only results in a muddle of insignificant elements that do the exact opposite. Including a single bold structure like a chunky pergola or a rendered blockwork wall around a seating area creates a sense of enclosure, introduces a touch of drama and holds focus inside the garden. Wooden structures like pergolas and arches also enable vertical planting and provide height. A heavily planted pergola placed against a boundary wall blurs the edges of the garden and suggests extra space beyond. A gate fixed to a wall or fence surrounded with climbing plants creates the illusion that the garden continues beyond the boundaries. A well-executed trompe l’oeil doorway painted on a wall framed with evergreen planting and climbers is a simple and fun way to add interest and give the appearance of more space. Using diminishing sized pots, plants or www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Linsay Evans.indd 23
statuary, or narrowing a path as it approaches the boundary will create a false perspective that makes the garden seem larger. Level changes like steps, raised beds, or a raised pool will give the garden an extra dimension, making it appear more interesting and distract attention away from the boundaries. Using contrasting colours is another way to give the impression of an extended garden.Try painting a door-sized rectangle in a darker colour on a pale wall, and frame it with some climbers and planted
A simple layout with clean lines and strong geometric shapes works best pots to look like a passageway. It is also effective to use contrasting flower and foliage colours to create interest and difference, this directs focus and creates the illusion of extra depth. When there isn’t much ground area, using the vertical space helps to provide more visual interest without cluttering the garden. Some ways of doing this include attaching planters to walls, hanging baskets and troughs from fence posts or mounting them along the top of fence panels. In a small garden is it essential to use a limited plant palette – too many different plant species will make the space seem busy and closed in. It is also important to make clever use of all available planting space. Climbers are a great way
to introduce greenery without taking up valuable space, and shrubs like Garrya elliptica, Fatshedera lizeii and Itea ilicifolia, Ceanothus and Rhamnus alaternus perform well when secured to a wall or fence. In courtyards where there are no borders, place trellis panels in floor mounted troughs. Green walls work extremely well in small spaces, and sedum roofs on sheds, bin stores, and other covered spaces are a great way to introduce low-maintenance planting. A small garden does not have to be boring and featureless, with some careful planning and creativity smaller spaces can make stunning gardens and wonderful, low-maintenance places in which to de-stress and entertain.

LET’S HEAR IT FROM... Andrew Fisher Tomlin 1
This month, we went to meet Andrew Fisher Tomlin, of Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer at his office in Chobham, Surrey
The business relocated from London some years ago, Andrew explained, “We moved out here to our office in Chobham because we were getting less and less work in Surrey, it’s a great place that used to be an old butchers shop, but being here through the recession we’ve realised it’s not about passing trade as much as being about the connections you make. “When the recession hit the first two years were fine because we had three or four big continuing jobs, then we also got old clients coming back – people who wanted to deal with us because they already knew us and wanted to support the community they live in. 2010 was the toughest year for us, but by autumn 2011 things were starting to get better, and this year’s been phenomenal. The great thing about a recession is that it makes you stand back and look at your business. Dan (Bowyer – co-owner of the business) always worries when I come back from a beach holiday because he knows I just sit there thinking about a new strategy! “We talk about business skills a lot at the London College of Garden Design – it’s all very well to become a designer and do a course to learn about plants but you also need to understand construction and how to run your

business in a modern environment. It’s about so much more than insurance and doing the books – it’s things like social media that are so important – it’s the future. You need to keep reinventing your business.” All about banking
Andrew comes from a family of parks gardeners and printers. “My dad was a builder but enjoyed his three allotments. I grew up near Cambridge where there were lots of fruit picking farms but I rebelled and went to work for Barclays and had a 10 year career in banking. My neighbours in London were landscape architects and over dinner with them I discovered an interest in the profession, then on holiday in Ilnacullin in Southern Ireland I had a realisation that this would be a great thing to do. At 28 I was already thinking it was time to do something else so I did an HND in horticulture at Askham Bryan with a middle year in Nottingham working for a design and build company which was great fun. I stayed on an extra year to do the research degree at the University of Leeds – primarily so that I could design the Askham Bryan Garden at Chelsea in 1995.” Design & build
Andrew had a design and build business which came to an end almost 10 years ago, he explained, “I decided to get out of the contracting side in 2004 when my business partner at the time went back to Australia.

I wanted more freedom to pick and choose rather than having to take every job; getting out of the contracting side enabled me to do this, and I could do other things that I wanted to, such as go onto the SGD council. So Dan and I completely reinvented the business.” We discuss suppliers and Andrew says he learnt early on that loyalty is very strong in the garden design world. “We are very loyal to our suppliers – and they repay that loyalty by doing their utmost to get us the plants we want, when we want them. We try to be at the top of peoples’ lists because we then get the very best service.” The company has a real mix of suppliers, including James Coles, Barcham Trees and Jacksons of Chobham, which enables their wide range of projects to be serviced. That same loyalty applies to the landscapers Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer use for their projects. “There’s a company called London Gardens and I’ve worked with Steven there for 20 years; we all know and trust each other. We are always involved with the build and because we like it, we always set the plants out – that’s just how we run our business. We don’t sub-contract and clients deal directly with the contractor.”

SGD
“I went onto the SGD council in 2003/4 and became Chairman in 2005. I thought it would be interesting and felt that if I wasn’t happy with certain things (which I wasn’t) I should stand up and do something about it. I felt we needed to get out there more and make contact with other organisations. “The SGD is better connected now with other organisations and the RHS. I feel it still hasn’t really sorted itself out in terms of membership and professionalism and the profile still isn’t high enough. That said at the start of recession two of the four big jobs we got came from the SGD – but that accounts for about 90 per cent of the work I’ve ever had through the SGD since I became a registered member in 1999.” London College of Garden Design
“When I first came back to London, I wanted to get into lecturing and Rosemary Alexander asked me to come and speak about construction. Following a conversation with Andrew Wilson (who I barely knew at the time) at a Chelsea launch event, I mentioned to him that I was in talks with Rosemary about buying the English
Gardening School and he then revealed he was trying to buy the Inchbald so after some discussion over drinks we decided to set up the London College of Garden Design together with Mark Gregory. We had all taught at the same places but only vaguely knew each other at the start, but it was a great feeling to start something from scratch like that. “Obviously we set the college up as a business but got some criticism from people who thought we should be doing it for free. We realised there was an opportunity for us to aim ourselves at a professional market. The thing I love is that having a group of students is like having your own set of researchers, our students are so varied and all bring something different. There are young people coming in, but less than there were five years ago. Students now understand how committed you have to be and that you have to gain a knowledge of business to make money out of it.” The RHS
Andrew is heavily involved with the RHS and is currently chair of the Chelsea Flower Show selection panel, a voluntary position. He went onto the selection panel for Chelsea five years

ago. He explains what the panel look for when selecting the mix of show gardens. “In terms of selection we’re looking for a good mix of well-designed gardens – not just Gold medal winning gardens. We often like it when people comment that there are some gardens they didn’t like at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – it means we’ve done our job well in selecting a varied mix that will appeal to all different tastes. We are also looking for some experience of show gardens within each application – because it’s probably the hardest place to do a show garden due to the space and time restrictions. It’s important to know, however, that the design always comes first. The selection panel will advise the RHS as to what would make a good show from a design point of view and that can also include planting design and construction quality, and from there the RHS shows department will put it all together. Nobody on the panel apart from myself as Chairman sees the budgets for the gardens, and the only reason I do is because I need to make sure there are sufficient funds to cover the build.” Charity

Andrew and Dan both get involved in quite a lot of charity work, they are involved with Thrive and also a great charity called Streetscape. They feel it’s important to stand up and do something, to put back into the industry in some way. “We’ve thought about taking student placements for work experience but because we are situated out in the sticks it’s often hard for people to get to us – so we try and give back in other ways. Another charity we have started to work with is Blind Veterans UK – who contacted me through Twitter. We’ve just designed a 4.5 acre woodland in Llandudno with them. They’re really inspirational to work with.” International

Andrew for five months and they decided together that they would like to do some work overseas. “Once people know you travel, the enquiries come in. I was at the Ellerslie Flower Show in Christchurch six years ago and then last year Tom Harfleet and I talked about doing a garden together there. We decided to do two gardens together, and with a small amount of volunteer help we built them ourselves. I came back and told Mark Gregory how easy all this show garden building stuff is! There’s a great camaraderie about international shows, and people really appreciate it when you come from a distance. As soon as we were back from there we got the call from Sydney who wanted me to be a horticultural consultant for the Sydney show.” Andrew realises how lucky they are now to be able to pick and choose the work they do. Dan tends to hold the fort back at the office whilst Andrew’s away, which is made all the more easy because of the really good landscapers they work with.

Future plans
This year Andrew plans to get involved in an immersive technology project with Tom Harfleet, and also another project to launch a miniature garden show using 3D printing. He is very enthusiastic about this prospect and at the time we met was looking for sponsorship support. Garden design industry
At the FutureScape event last November Andrew was on The Detail is in the Design panel debate and got a chance to air his views about snobbery in garden design. He recalls that over the last five years at Chelsea there have regularly been designers who thought they should have won Best in Show and questioned why they didn’t get it. “It’s astounding really. It’s very rude to say that judges are ‘also–rans’ and don’t understand the gardens these designers create – the judges are very experienced and are there on a completely voluntary basis”. Andrew speaks of his love and enjoyment of collaborating with people and producing new ideas with other designers. “There is quite a naivety amongst some designers – they 30

become a big fish in a small pond and start to treat landscapers very poorly, I just can’t understand it, we’re all together in this business and should enjoy it together. There’s a lot of arrogance at the top end – people who believe their own publicity and think they’re invincible and indispensable. A lot of those people will have a reality check next year as they will have been pipped to the post for the big Chelsea gardens by a whole new generation of designers – which is brilliant. Sponsors are realising it’s a bit dull to keep using the same people.” Asked to give advice for any aspiring designers wanting to step into the world of show gardens, Andrew says “If someone were unsure whether or not to apply for Chelsea, my advice would be to only do it if you really want to and for the right reasons. I would also advise never to self-fund a garden and not expect a medal at the end of it. People have to realise as well that there are a whole group of wonderful designers who have no intention of doing show gardens. We finished by asking Andrew what his interests outside of work are, but learnt about

SLEEK MARINE Kevin Barnett Garden Design The Sleek Marine Garden was designed for the New Forest and Hampshire Show
A
speculative enquiry as to how I might gain a position within the New Forest show in mid to late 2012, resulted in the offer of a 6x6m island in the centre of the Horticultural marquee (or less if I wanted)! Planning commenced immediately, the main theme coming together whilst on holiday on a sunbed in February. The build time at the site was one and a half weeks prior to the show, but construction commenced a lot earlier in my garage and my drive building the frames for the paths and the gabion stone wall. THE GARDEN Being my first show garden it was evident to me that without a show track record I wasn’t going to get a lot of sponsorship, and therefore whatever was going to be created had to be financed and built by myself. Whilst all gardens and stands were judged, fortunately there were none of the complications such as submitting plans for approval as one would have to if exhibiting at the RHS shows. I had at least two thoughts concerning what I wanted to integrate, these being a gabion style wall and

vertical planting, and I quite fancied western red cedar slatted panels. The gabion walls were inspired during a visit to the world horticultural expo Floriade in the summer of 2012. I had seen a style of weldmesh and small grade stone walling that I hadn’t seen over here in the UK and was looking for an opportunity to use them. Constructing the top of the wall from cedar battens turned out to be a good decision working extremely well unifying and tying the whole garden together with the rich cedar colour and a great cedar smell. The vertical planting is a product that I had first seen at the National Gardening Show at The Bath & West Showground in 2011, exhibited by Treebox. Leaving my details on the obligatory clip board I subsequently received an invitation to attend a seminar at Provender Nurseries the following February. I was so struck by the vertical walling I contacted Armando Raish the MD of Treebox on getting home and have kept in touch ever since. Armando agreed to let me borrow some walling modules that were used at RHS Chelsea Flower Show where they had provided the backdrop to the BALI stand. I used the modules in four vertical planted panels set into the cedar screen to showcase the rich evergreen textures of ferns such

as Dryopteris and Asplenums, Liripope muscari and ivy contrasting against a more changeable use with annual planting. For the gravel paths I took the opportunity to use CED’S CedaGravel Gravel stabilisation, the honeycomb panels which held the gravel in place were supplied in sheets measuring 1.6m x 1.2m x 40mm which were very easy to use and very cost effective (being 40mm deep any offcuts were ideal to raise plant pot height). Plants were supplied by Hortus Loci. Robin Wallis was a great help, his advice to hold my nerve and select plants the week before really paid off. It was during our discussions about the planting style when he asked me if I was going to plant in a ‘chocolate box’ or a more ‘sleek marine’ style that the name of the garden originated. Given the contemporary nature of the design and the fact that the Solent coast forms the southern edge of the New Forest it seemed appropriate to plant in a full sun and coastal tolerant style. I had, however already pre-selected the multi stem Betula utilis jaquemontii and three Pittosporum tobira ‘Nana’, as I just loved them! The result: a Gold medal awarded for my first show garden. Planning is now underway for 2014.

he brief was fairly open, although one specific request was for a garden lodge to be used as a gym and art room. This was something that would require planning permission so I set this in motion whilst I got on with designing the rest of the garden. The ground floor of the house opened out onto a deck that was one metre from the lawn level, and felt quite exposed to the surrounding neighbours. The garden also sloped across its width by about 1.5m, so I needed to incorporate this into the design. It was important that as you walked into the kitchen and lounge, there was an immediate focal point that distracted from the surrounding buildings. I designed a patio area with Cor-Ten steel panels, and fire pit that led you across a small pool, and onto a long bench that transported you into a silver birch tree copse with an understorey of woodland plants. From here there were hidden stepping36

stones that led directly to the garden lodge. We installed new bespoke boundary hardwood fencing to the whole garden, and planted pleached hornbeams, with high panels of 1.5m above the fence height. This immediately framed the space and created privacy for the client. We kept the deck, but removed the balustrade and built planting beds and long stone steps around its perimeter. This had the effect of anchoring the house to the garden, and opening up the space further. We also planted a 40m long mature hedge of Taxus baccata that led straight from the front garden through to the back garden. The landscaper contractor – Ed Belderbos was key to the success of this garden, the workmanship and organisation of the project build was faultless, and the client, designer and contractor enjoyed a good working relationship. The only difficulties came with the planning permission for the garden lodge, which was a

long, painful and drawn out process. This was an exciting garden to design, as the clients had such great vision and were open to new materials and ideas. Apart from the lodge that suffered planning complications, it was completed in time for summer, and now the garden lodge has also been installed.

emorial Park is a public park in Fleetwood, Lancashire, owned and managed by Wyre Council. Originally conceived as Warrenhurst Park commercial pleasure grounds in 1902, these were re-designed as a public park in 1925 to commemorate the fallen of Fleetwood in the First World War. I was employed to undertake restoration of the hard landscaping details of the 1920s rose garden, from design to contract administration, and to provide a soft landscaping scheme that is manageable within the existing budgets and labour. COLLABORATION REQUIREMENTS ● To liaise with English Heritage as the park was being considered for listing, the War Memorial is Grade II.The park has now been listed. ● To consult with the Friends Group on the proposals. ● To liaise with United Futures and Community Spaces who are providing grant funding for the project. BUDGET The construction and planting budget was £75,000, with planting labour to be provided by existing staff. SOURCING MATERIALS Marshalls for the conservation kerbs, setts and paving. All pre cast items were bespoke and manufactured by North West Pre-cast, Pilling, Preston. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Original stone and precast details of the 1920s rose garden were faithfully replaced. Pillars and copings were integrated with an existing ramp so that it matched the main steps.Threshold and edging details of the adjacent play area completed in 2010 have been used to link the two areas. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

uadron has been responsible for maintaining Burgess Park since 1996 as part of the company’s ongoing grounds maintenance contract with the London Borough of Southwark. At 56 hectares, Burgess Park is Southwark’s largest park, and is relatively young, having been developed as a result of the Abercrombie Plan for open spaces in 1943. Burgess Park is surrounded by one fifth of the most deprived wards in London and in recent years visitor numbers to the park had declined due to incidents of anti-social behaviour and fears for personal safety. During 2011 and 2012 the park underwent an £8million transformation with monies from the Creation Trust, the Mayor of London’s Help a London Park scheme and Southwark Council. The works, carried out

Mark says, “As Head Gardener, I see my role as being to inspire, train and motivate the Quadron horticultural team to provide the best possible service to our client, and hence create the most exciting and dynamic experience for the public. In the last year staff morale, time-keeping, productivity and quality of work have all been significantly improved, as have client satisfaction scores, which were 96 per cent against a target of 90 per cent in March 2013.” Quadron is working to positively engage with the local community, as well as helping to encourage a greater feeling of security in the park. Overgrown areas near the Rust Square entrance have been completely transformed by replacing dense pyracantha hedges with smaller shrubs. This www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Quadron is working to positively engage with the local community has radically improved sight lines in this area and Quadron staff have noticed a marked increase in footfall at this entrance, including lone women and visitors with children. Similarly, several of the park’s coppiced areas showed evidence of substance abuse and people sleeping rough.Vegetation in these areas has now been thinned to increase visibility, with the removed plant material having been chipped and re-used as mulch on-site. In partnership with the Client and the Friends of Burgess Park, Quadron has developed a www.prolandscapermagazine.com

number of opportunities for volunteers to become more involved in the park. Between November 2012 and March 2013, 485 hours of work were carried out by volunteers in the park, under the guidance of Quadron staff. Groups involved include Divine Rescue (a local homeless charity) and Thrive (who work with young people with disabilities),
1 Tree-lined avenues make for a pleasant stroll or jog. 2 The park affords views of many London landmarks and the surrounding urban landscape highlights that the park is a vital green lung for London. 3 The park’s Old Kent Road entrance. 4 The Wells Way underpass was previously dark and enclosed, but the new chevron planting has lightened the area and increased perception of safety. 5 Quadron staff use bikes as an emission free mode of transport through the park and other local maintenance sites.

Consideration is given to sustainability issues as well as ensuring the newly transformed park continues to appeal to the whole community as well as members of the general public. The groups have assisted with copse clearance, creating bark pathways for woodland walks, tree planting and mulching. These volunteer activities have not only increased the local community’s sense of ownership of the park, but mean that the park receives improvement work that is above the requirements of the specification without impacting on the maintenance budget. Quadron’s Head Gardener also attends the Friends of Burgess Park’s regular meetings to hear their views of the park and supports the Burgess Park Food Project in their onsite community food growing area, with the donation of materials and growing advice. Head Gardener, Mark Cox and Supervisor, Mered Jones, have worked with Southwark Council to develop a conservation and sustainability strategy for the park. This includes retaining all biomass within the park rather

than disposing of this off-site. All used plant material is chipped or composted on-site and used to resurface pathways or as soil improving mulch. Pruned tree branches are also used as dead hedging to make a natural edging for paths and no pesticides are used in the park. At Quadron’s suggestion, Southwark Council invested in renovating derelict poly-tunnels in Chumleigh gardens and, with help from an enthusiastic team of local volunteers under the guidance of Quadron staff, many of the park’s plants are now cultivated here from seed or cuttings. Quadron is eager to continue the momentum that has built up since the park’s regeneration. Burgess Park Head Gardener, Mark Cox, says: “Aspirationally, I see Burgess Park becoming London’s most modern and community-centred green space. The regeneration package has given us a fantastic new underlying structure, which we have already supplemented with new planting schemes and other improvements, many of which wouldn’t have been possible without the input of the many local volunteers. Over the next five years we will build from this position to further enhance all aspects of the park horticulturally, environmentally, ecologically and sustainably.”

NURSERY NEWS Majestic Trees launches ‘Delivery to Tree Pit’ service Majestic Trees is renowned for the size of its specimen trees, but whilst they do grow trees in as small as 80 litre, this is one of the largest at 5,000 litre. Here they can be seen delivering a Pterocarya fraxinifolia (Caucasian Wingnut Tree) along with over 30 other trees for a security screen. This ‘Delivery to
Tree Pit’ is a service Majestic Trees offers to the trade where you prepare the tree pit in advance and their own custom built transport fleet and heavy lifting equipment places it in the hole, eliminating any liability you would typically have from damage to the tree, knowing what equipment you would need or how to handle larger specimen
trees. They grow much smaller trees in over 350 varieties, and to learn more about both the nursery and this service, please visit their website at www.majestictrees.co.uk or call the office on 01582 843 881.
Barcham propagates true black poplar stock from Thurrock Council and the Coalhouse Fort project Although the black poplar (Populus nigra) is a British native, it is rarely seen nowadays. Mike Glover, managing director of Barcham Trees, believes much imported stock from Europe is not of the species, but of more vigorous hybrid forms, so he was delighted when he was given the opportunity to propagate from true British forms of the tree. Thurrock Council is responsible for Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, Essex. Built from 1861 to 1874, this important fortification against the French had a number of black poplar planted in the parade ground, probably to provide troops with shade. the original specimens remain, both are thought to be around 140 years old, and their DNA is recorded.
In 2009 the Council asked Barcham Trees to see if it was feasible to propagate new stock from the trees. The propagation has been a success and Barcham Trees is now supplying young stock to the Project. Mike Glover says “Biosecurity is becoming increasingly important, and it is great to be providing Thurrock Council with young black poplars of known local provenance”. He has already taken cuttings from the young trees he has grown to increase the nursery’s stock further and hopes to offer true black poplar more generally in the years ahead. www.barcham.co.uk
NURSERY NOTES
“Less is More” definitely does not apply to knowledge about plants – in the case of plant knowledge more is definitely much better. By extending our knowledge about plants we can not only improve the way we grow and maintain plants, but also enthuse and inform customers more – so hopefully resulting in bigger sales and very satisfied customers! Here at The Plantation, part of the Gavin Jones Group, we’re benefitting immensely from the Gavin Jones Diploma. This in-house qualification, currently being studied by literally everybody in the company, includes plant identification units. In a recent training event we also encouraged staff to think in a different sensory way about plants. While blindfolded, each had to identify some plants using just touch, sound, smell and in some cases taste. It’s probably not something to try out on the customers but it did instigate some interesting conversations. As we know, the plant kingdom is enormous and we can never know all there is to know, but learning more about the plants we grow and sell is definitely my New Year’s resolution!

NURSERY NEWS RHS response to EU Plant Reproductive Material legislation The RHS, along with many other horticultural organisations in the UK, is highlighting concerns at the very highest level that the EU Plant Reproductive Material legislation is likely to have unintended consequences for the horticultural sector. The RHS is working closely with representatives from the sector to raise awareness of the potential negative impacts of the proposed legislation that could see breeders having to pay a fee of between £300 and £500 to register plant names, a cost that would inevitably be passed on to UK gardeners. The knock on effect of increased costs and bureaucracy could be a reduction in the range of plants available to buy in garden centres. In addition to meeting with Defra officials, representatives of the EU Commission and briefing MEPs, the RHS are also currently involved with drafting amendments to the legislation aimed to ensure that it is proportionate and the interests of gardeners are reflected in the changes. The RHS is urging gardeners to contact their MEPs to alert them to their dissatisfaction with the current EU Plant Reproductive Material legislation. www.rhs.org.uk

Contract growing projects are flourishing at Boningale Nurseries Like many large amenity nurseries, Boningale grows the majority of its stock each year based on trends and calculated predictions for general sale. This traditional method of production means that last-minute orders might have to be sourced from elsewhere, either in the UK or abroad. This not only makes the process more time consuming, it also adds to the overall costs and could mean the contractor might have to compromise on the specification and selected varieties of plants at certain times of the year. However, with contract growing, the guess work is taken out of the equation. Clients get to order the plants to a specified budget, leaving the nursery to produce the plant material they require on time and grown to the required specification,
quality is also assured. Quite simply, it is the most efficient and cost-effective way of producing high-spec plant material in the quantity needed and for the quality demanded. When Boningale was contracted by Frost Landscapes to grow, supply and deliver 10,000 plants for two roof terraces at the new, £188 million City of Birmingham Library last year, Boningale growers spent 12 months producing a “schedule of plants”, which enabled the contract to be completed to specification, on time and within budget. This made a direct contribution towards the architects’ aim of achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for the scheme. Aidan Lane, Commercial Director of Frosts Landscape Construction Ltd, confirmed that
the benefits of contract growing on this scale were easy to see in the quality of plants we delivered to the Library of Birmingham. Boningale also supplied 17,000 contract-grown plants for Eastside City Park, the first park to be created in Birmingham for more than 130 years, spending eight months carefully cultivating and supplying herbaceous perennials and shrubs for the 6.75 acre space that sits alongside Millennium Point. Contract growing provides clients with a real point of difference from their competitors because it demonstrates solid management practice and collaborative strengths, especially when the grower works closely with the landscape architect and contractor. www.boningale.co.uk
“Big is beautiful” The Plantation sell a lot of specimen trees and shrubs including some large and impressive plants, but even Gavin Jones’ Alison Durnford was shocked when this one was unloaded from the lorry; this is definitely something very special. Approximately 50 years old, this 3m high bonsai Camellia sasanqua ‘Shishi Gashira’ is covered in flower buds and will flower
from December until February. The stunning hot-pink semi-double flowers on this hardy tough plant will brighten up any dark gloomy days of winter that lie ahead. Having already been exhibited at FutureScape, as well as being tweeted about, much discussed and much photographed, this plant is starting to become a bit of a celebrity! www.theplantationnursery.co.uk

Plantsman’s PLOT A round-up of trees and plants available at some of the country’s best nurseries To appear in Plantsman’s Plot, please send your plant of the month, details and image to editor@pro-landscaper.co.uk Ilex crenata, Japanese Holly is a perfect alternative for the more recently problematic Buxus. It grows well on all but heavy soils and makes a handsome topiary specimen. The evergreen and compact habit allows it to often be clipped into cones, balls, spirals, bonsai and hedges. In late spring, it produces a delicate white flower followed in autumn by small insignificant black berries. The small rounded leaves are very similar in appearance to Buxus but its resistance to pests and diseases, in particular blight, make it an ideal substitute. www.deepdale-trees.co.uk
It is in the depth of winter that this dark green evergreen shows off its true glory. With its close growing foliage it makes excellent hedges and structural shapes. It is perfect for making topiary and responds well to close trimming. The perfect time to plant large Taxus is now as they are currently available as wire root balls. Readyhedge can supply these as 125-150cm tall and 150-175cm tall and 50-70cm wide. Planted with care these can give the impression of a Readyhedge straight away. www.readyhedgeltd.com
Propagated from a tree at Grayswood Hill in Surrey, Betula utilis var. jaquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ is one of the best white stemmed birches. Its white, almost luminescent bark is superb together with its rich green, glossy summer foliage; it is also a stunning contrast in wintertime if planted near evergreen species. Ilex aquifolium ‘Ingramii’ is a compact evergreen holly with dark purple stems. Small, oblong, spiny leaves – soft when young, and dark olive green in the centre with a creamy white margin accentuating the spines. New foliage is speckled with pink and purple flecks adding to the overall attraction in the winter months. Very slow growing and compact, and slightly upright in habit reaching an overall height of 1.5m, this little delight is perfect for the smaller garden. Male variety. Also known as ‘Silverdust’ in USA. www.provendernurseries.co.uk

The upright, oval crown is neat and well-structured making this tree an excellent choice for restricted spaces or avenues; in addition it is also undemanding, growing well on any well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. The common name of cut-leaved beech comes from the deeply serrated and long leaves of this beautiful tree of medium height. Introduced in the early 1800s, this wonderful specimen tree Fagus sylvatica Asplenifolia won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002. It is pyramidal in its early years, but is eventually capable of becoming as wide as it is tall. A lovely choice for parkland where its cut leaves give magnificent contrast. Beech thrives just about anywhere other than exposed and coastal locations. As it is shallow rooted, under planting is not recommended. It does well in most reasonably fertile, well drained soils, except heavy clay or light sand. There are few cut leaf trees that last the test of time but this is surely one of the best. The key for planting is to give it the space it merits at maturity, a minimum fifteen metre radius. See a video of this tree on www.buythetreeyousee.com.
The Loquat, Eriobotrya japonica, adds an exotic feel to any garden with its large leathery leaves up to 30cm long, and its striking heavily-scented flowers in autumn that resemble hawthorn blossom. Although not readily ripening in the UK climate, the round orangecoloured edible fruits taste like apricots and are often used in jams. This stunning architectural evergreen shrub resembles the larger-leaved Rhododendrons but without the necessity for any particular soil type. The dense bushy habit of this plant makes it suitable for growing either as a multistemmed shrub or as a Half or Full Standard with a large head. www.theplantationnursery.co.uk
The Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ is a quintessential holly, sporting deep green foliage and bearing abundant, glossy berries. It is at its best at this time of the year, providing not only a colourful garden attraction, but also much needed food and a nesting habitat for birds. This female holly is a hybrid between the English holly Ilex aquifolium, and the Chinese holly Ilex cornuta, and makes a particularly robust standard tree. www.agrumi.co.uk
Every garden should have a least one if not more varieties of Viburnum. Surely no other genus of plants can offer the wide range of features for all year round effect for every type of location. From the tough leathery leaves of V.rhytidophyllum, the winter flowering V.bodnantense “Dawn”, the dark purple-blue berries of V.davidii, the delicate flower blooms of V.tinus and sweet scent of V.burkwoodii. Fully hardy, easy to manage, suitable for the small garden, hedges, specimen and all aspects of the border. Select a range of evergreen and deciduous forms for flowers and scent all year round. www.colesnurseries.co.uk
Lonicera nitida ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ is a dense versatile evergreen which when clipped regularly looks impressive, making a good substitute for box. The golden leaves add a glow of sunshine to the garden even on the dullest of winter days. www.walnuthillnurseries.co.uk

EQUIPMENT NEWS Tracmaster celebrates a record year in 2013
2013 has been a record year for leading groundscare equipment experts Tracmaster, which has seen its manufacturing output grow by an impressive 82 per cent. One of the key areas of manufacturing growth has been in
Tracmaster’s popular CAMON range. Tracmaster designs five key CAMON products at its headquarters, in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, including an aerator, scarifier, turf cutter, tiller, rotavator and chipper, and employs a combination of in-house facilities and local companies to fabricate the parts. Originally aimed at the hire industry, Tracmaster uses the CAMON range as a platform to improve, develop and create a larger range of products, and this year has seen the successful launch of a new range of

lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and brushcutters aimed at the domestic user. The CAMON range was given an extra boost too this summer, when the TC07 turf cutter was featured every week in ITV’s Love Your Garden and described as a ‘joyous machine’ by the programme’s producers! Alex Pitt, Tracmaster’s Sales & Marketing Director, comments: “This year has been extremely busy for us – with over 330 more CAMON machines sold than last year, many to new customers. Battery powered landscaping tools Equipment Editor Joe Wilkinson comments on the advantages of lithium-ion battery powered tools I recently had the chance to try out a new range of Pellenc lithium-ion battery powered products and I have to say I was surprised by the performance. An astounding factor was how little noise disturbance there was coming from the product during use – the operator is easily able to have a conversation with someone without even having to raise their voice. With major manufacturers such as Stihl, Pellenc, Husqvarna and Makita now promoting the use and benefits of battery operated power, just how will these types of tools grab the attention of the professional landscaper,

and how will they prove that they are just as good as the typical two stroke and four stroke petrol engines? It is fair to say that the advance in the technology of the lithium-ion battery means that the electric power product is now a viable option when it comes to buying new tools. With different battery sizes suitable for a whole range of applications, there is something available for anybody with one eye on environmental matters. Pellenc also claims that you can do a full day’s work for the cost of ten pence, which is a significant day to day saving compared to traditional petrol engines – although the cost of the unit is significantly more expensive when buying outright. Ultimately, you’re likely to be spending less on the machine, considering the low cost of a full charge compared to a full tank of petrol. Pellenc also claims that after around 800 full charge and discharge cycles, the capacity of the battery is still 80 per cent of its initial capacity; that’s pretty good. The battery even discharges itself after four days without use, preserving the condition of the machine and leading it to have a longer lifespan. The technology involved in the Pellenc battery pack itself is really rather advanced. If your machine starts playing up, the engineer can easily tell if the fault is with the battery pack or any other attachments by plugging a device into it.This will
lead to easier problem diagnosis, and reduced down time of the machine. In terms of product benefits, the reduced noise pollution is a big plus. For operators working in public gardens and parks, you will be causing substantially less disruption to the public as these machines are barely audible. The only sound is the head of the strimmer, or the blades of the hedgecutter. They are also lighter. Battery packs come with a harness that spreads the weight evenly over your shoulders and torso, and the actual attachment naturally weighs less due to the fact that the engine is replaced by an electronic motor. I fully believe that battery operated tools are a fantastic venture in terms of innovation and ease of use. I do however think that it may be a while before they catch on as fully integrated members of the landscaping family. As far as I’m concerned, there is no issue with current petrol equipment and the initial outlay cost of battery powered gear is too high, but that will come down in time, especially as demand goes up along with the idea of environmental legislations coming into play – not that this has happened, as of yet. Makita’s premium cordless technology has been employed in the 36V LXT split shaft system which mirrors the MM4 version in the attachments available but has the attributes of silent motor running which is proving attractive to grounds care contractors where noise is a problem such as Royal residencies, hospitals and schools. The Makita BUX360 has a 2-speed control and will run a nylon line head up to 6,600rpm in high speed and a brush cutter blade up to 7,300rpm. It is supplied with shoulder harness and fast charger. Makita’s 36v cordless inventory includes LXT bent shaft linetrimmer, LXT lawnmower, cultivator, top handle chainsaw, blower, hedge trimmer and brush cutter. WWW.MAKITAUK.COM
One of the most popular power tools in the STIHL cordless tool range is its tough HSA 86 hedge trimmer – a professional standard model that works quietly all day. With long double-sided blades, large areas of hedging are quickly and efficiently cut. Impressive torque coupled with the blades’ high quality and rapid stroke rate mean the trimmer tackles both thick older wood and gives fine conifer hedging a neat finished trim. Signs of the tool’s quality include extra wear protection on the blade set’s aluminium bar, and its brushless, maintenance-free STIHL motor ensures a consistent
stroke rate even under load. The HSA 86 is powered by STIHL’s choice of ‘one-powers-all’ Lithium-ion batteries. Cassettestyle batteries slot neatly into the tool or can be held on a waist belt
to minimise weight in the hands. Alternatively, users can opt for a backpack battery that gives the HSA 86 hedge trimmer a full 11 hours trigger time. WWW.STIHL.CO.UK

Alitex are the makers of aluminium greenhouses and conservatories based in Petersfield, Hampshire. The company was started originally a few miles away in Alton in 1952 by Frank Hagborg, then called Byron Engineering. Frank’s aim was to make functional, well designed aluminium greenhouses. He sold the business to Berkshire farmer Mark Hall in 1990 and his son Tom has been the MD since 1991. In 2000 the business relocated to the current site, Torberry Farm on the South Downs which has enabled it to grow operationally and display the beautiful structures in a stunning setting.Alitex has three main greenhouse ranges, all inspired by the masters of greenhouse design – the Victorians. The National Trust Greenhouse Collection are all free-standing and come in seven different designs and six heritage colours, each is named after a National Trust garden. This is the value for money, ready made range at a very affordable price. The Traditional range – which is sometimes referred to as the ‘real’ gardener’s greenhouse. Externally the greenhouse has a realistic timber-look, but internally you can see the nuts and bolts of the aluminium structure. This range is designed to fill the gap between a bespoke glasshouse and standard type and can be designed to fit in awkward spaces. The types of greenhouse that can be manufactured in this range are endless – for example vine, peach and pit greenhouses. Alitex can also replicate old structures using existing bases, or fit to awkward walls. The Messenger range – inspired by Thomas Messenger, famous worldwide in the nineteenth century for his functional yet beautiful greenhouses. This range is designed to look like traditional Victorian timber frames internally and externally, with no visible nuts or bolts anywhere. This range is ideal for use on heritage sites as close attention is given to detail both inside and outside of the structure. Products in all three ranges are available in all sizes and colours, with the most popular colours currently www.prolandscapermagazine.com

being heritage greens and all shades of white. Alitex believes in building good relationships with designers and landscapers and regularly holds events at its four acre site, ranging from the annual lecture held each September, to a recently launched ‘builders breakfast’ where contractors can go along to find out more about the products, view the buildings on show, and tour the factory, whilst also enjoying a bacon sandwich! Alitex also welcomes visits from designers, landscapers and architects to see the range of products on show at Torberry Farm, and has worked alongside some prominent industry people such as John Brookes,Tom Stuart Smith, Andy Sturgeon, John Wyer and Dan Pearson to name just a few. The company has a worldwide presence with all orders being taken, made and distributed from the head office. They erect all their own greenhouses, and attend RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and last year for the first time RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show where they were exposed to a whole new range of clients. The company currently has 60 members of staff, with approximately 40 based at the head office. Sales Directors Chris Sawyer and John Lawson jointly have 65 years’ experience in the business, and are on hand to answer queries or share their vast knowledge of the whole range. Quality conservatories were added to the range and launched at RHS Chelsea in 2005, and are now also a flourishing part of the business.
