his year Maylim celebrates its 20th anniversary – it’s overwhelming to think how the time has flown aylim formed back in 2002 as a groundworks and civil engineering contractor, working mainly for McNicholas and Skanska. Since then, Maylim has developed into one of London and the South East’s market leaders in external works and landscaping, reaching a turnover of £61m in 2021. In 2009, I was sitting on my own in our first office, we had no staff and a limited workforce, but we had ambition as well as a few open promises from some old clients and so the ourney began ome of our first pro ects were bigger than us, but we went the extra mile and the clients, all of them true to their word, began to trust in me and Maylim’s ability and commitment to quality. We owe our success today to those who had faith in Maylim in those early days. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to all of you who have helped us along the way – it will never be forgotten. The success of Maylim is attributed to all the great people who work here. Our

What is your proudest achievement whilst working at Maylim? I recently achieved my Level 6 CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing. Don’t ask me why, but I decided to fast track the course and complete it in one year – all whilst working fulltime and dipping in and out of lockdowns and home-schooling. It was a bit of a whirlwind, but
people truly care about what they do and go above and beyond to deliver safety, quality and an excellent client experience. There’s a focus on understanding the clients vision and everyone works hard to make a difference to each and every pro ect.
“Our people truly care about what they do and go above and beyond to deliver safety, quality and an excellent client experience” We certainly don’t shy away from challenges; instead we approach them with confidence and positivity to deliver the best possible result. After all, this is the reason we have made it to 20 years and why we are excited for the next 20

A Roundtable with Senior Management
M
aylim seemingly came out of nowhere. When the commercial landscaping company won BALI’s Grand Award in 2017, a ripple ran through the industry. Another serious competitor had entered the market. But in reality, Maylim has been uietly growing over the last 20 years. ver the last decade or so, its turnover has skyrocketed from 250k to an eye watering 1m, which often leads to it being mistaken for a commercially aggressive company solely chasing profit. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The company still has to make money, admits managing director Thomas ahony but its biggest drive is its passion for public realm work. This arguably stems from Thomas, who comes from a civil engineering background, where aylim also has its roots. e first came across Maylim when it was working as a small contractor on More London, a large public realm scheme on London’s South Bank. He joined as managing director in 2009, working from a small office with few jobs and few staff. Two years later, Gerard Purcell came on board as commercial director from a previous role at construction giant Skanska. Together, they bought the business from its previous owner in 201 , the same year pre construction director
Matt Wincott came on board and operations director (then site manager) Liam Hawkins a year later. rom here, aylim grew into the prolific landscape contractor it is today. ts first big job was Canada Water for British Land, followed soon after by Merchant Square. It wanted these iconic schemes, not for the
“Over the last decade or so, its turnover has skyrocketed from £250k to an eyewatering £61m” profit but for the pro ects themselves. e love high class and high uality pro ects, says Thomas, whose initial goal was to reach £10m. When that happened in just four years, Maylim set its sights on further growth, but there is a saying which keeps aylim focusing on uality above anything else: ever leave a bad ob behind. By
always providing clients with the best outcome, Maylim quickly grew its client base. And its friendly, efficient approach has allowed it to build strong relationships with its suppliers too. Now that Maylim has become a market leader, both in the commercial and the housebuilding sector, it is looking toward the future of the company. Four years ago, it sold 70% to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) – quietly, of course, and before it became a widespread business model. t should make the business more sustainable and allow it to grow. It makes sense to have a company where people want to stay and feel like they are part of the company too it s beneficial for both the employees and the business. We had been approached by equity companies, but it just didn’t feel right. Maylim is still a young brand with a bold ambition. By selling the majority of the company to an EOT, the directors are putting a succession plan in place, but also allowing employees to put their own stamp on the business and recognising the team for their hard work and successes. It’s not the only way that Maylim is looking toward the future, either. In typical
6
Roundtable.indd 6

Maylim fashion, it is opting for organic growth and is branching out with a new company – Maylim Landscapes. This will focus on soft landscaping, which may come as a surprise to some, considering Maylim’s reputation and extensive experience as a hard landscaping company in the commercial sector. “We’ve been dealing in soft landscaping, under the radar, for a few years, notes om, he plan now is to undertake all our soft landscaping inhouse. We were very reliant on others before, but now bringing Jack Skinner, head of soft landscaping, on board, our plan is to grow that part of the business. “In the background, we’re going after individual maintenance contracts to start developing the maintenance side, adds Gerard. “Ultimately it is going to deliver its own individual soft landscaping pro ects. Through this new venture, Maylim is hoping to attract more roof gardens and high-end domestic projects; a world away from the multi-million-pound commercial schemes for which the company has become known, which is why Thomas says it has taken a while for them to take this idea through to fruition. “Liam is probably the one who has been pushing it for the last couple of years, and I’ve been nervous about it because we don’t want to dilute the brand . You’ve
THOMAS O’MAHONY Managing Director
ALISTAIR BAYFORD
Business Development Director
got to be careful of that. We recognise the skills involved in soft landscaping which were needed before we could progress into this market. “It is about having the right people on board, and bringing in Alistair Bayford, business development director, with his past experience, has been hugely influential with the team.
“As Maylim grows, it recognises and embraces its responsibility to be a force for good” Rather than diminishing Maylim’s brand, Gerard says it will become a core part of its USP and allow it to deliver both hard and soft landscaping in-house. Gerard also adds that there’s a gap in the market, with Maylim Landscapes’ current competition largely being smallto-medium sized landscaping companies. As Maylim grows, it recognises and embraces its responsibility to be a force for good. Alistair admits that Maylim needs to share more about what it’s doing in terms of innovation and best practice.
This is something the company is looking to focus on going forward. It wants to drive change in the industry, making it a more diverse and inclusive sector in which to work. Maylim wants to address diversity issues by focusing on attracting individuals from marginalised groups, primarily related to gender and ethnicity, opening up more opportunities and by not being frightened of failing in this regard. “There is still a lot to be done, but collectively as an industry we have to continue to develop diversity focused initiatives, says homas, who also adds that the company is bringing through the next generation by recruiting up to eight apprentices and graduates each year. Maylim is also focusing on the net zero ambitions of the sector. This will see Maylim develop its own solutions. Alistair adds that “developing a robust ESG strategy is a priority and will set the direction of travel for the business in the future . Boasting a strong financial footing, employee-focused growth, and the opportunity to get its hands on some of the biggest commercial – and soon domestic – projects in London, Maylim certainly has the credentials to attract new people to the industry. And it’s “The aylim ay which will retain them.

Exchange Square
A major new public park for the City of London, Exchange Square has been re-imagined as a bucolic landscape with trees, generously planted borders and four times more green space. Exchange Square sits at the heart of Broadgate, London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood, home to the magnificent Broadgate Venus by Fernando Botero. Suspended above the tracks of Liverpool Street Station, the landscape unfolds across several levels to create a more natural topography for the site. Maylim was appointed by British Land as Principal Contractor for this scheme taking on full design responsibility and production of RIBA Stage 4, 5 and 6 information. Consultants DSDHA and Arup were appointed by Maylim to progress technical information to enable construction. Maylim contributed to the delivery of this unique and high uality public space of significant value. hroughout the construction of Exchange Square, interaction with local communities and businesses has extended the positive impacts of the project. The scheme has been transformational and the space provides a new place to rest and relax. One Tower Bridge
One Tower Bridge is a mixed-use development by Berkeley Homes comprised of residential, commercial and cultural spaces as well as a 20-storey residential block with rooftop gardens and communal and private amenities spread across the site. Maylim’s input was extensive – delivering the landscaping and external works. Maylim’s remit included all of the builders works for lighting, irrigation and drainage, concrete works and build ups, as well as the installation of the attenuation system. Concrete support walls for granite clad planters were built and water features and living walls installed. The star of the project is the bespoke clock water feature located within the boulevard, central to the project. Maylim also completed the spectacular private roof gardens; installing steel canopies, outdoor kitchens, decking, paved terraces and hot tub jacuzzis. Maylim was named as the winner of the Grand Award at the BALI National Landscape Awards 2017. The project also won the Principal Award for its category; Hard Landscaping Construction (Non-Domestic) Over £1.5m. Greenford Quay
Maylim was appointed as principal contractor by Greystar to deliver the first phase of external works surrounding the first residential building at Greenford Quay. Tillermans Court is a modular built, mixed-use development that sits alongside the Grand Union Canal. Greenford Quay Phase 1B is the first phase of the overall scheme and is an integral part of the Greenford Quay masterplan. The scheme not only consists of the central square, which is at the heart of the development, but also includes a canal side amphitheatre. Key aspects of Maylim’s remit included: extensive civil and structural design and installation, water features, lighting, CCTV and data systems, linear and below ground drainage, paving and cladding detailing, masonry design and sampling. The luscious soft landscaping scheme consists of semi-mature trees, herbaceous planting, turf and wildflower meadows. Specialist sub-contractors completed the water features, soft landscaping, irrigation, surfacing and resin bound gravel. Maylim entered the scheme into the BALI National Landscape Awards 2020 and was delighted to be named as Principal Award winner for the category – a well-deserved achievement for all involved in the successful delivery of the scheme.
Greenwich Waterfront
Greenwich Waterfront stretches 1km from Greenwich Peninsula alongside the River Thames. As principal contractor for this £10.5m scheme, Maylim was heavily involved in the technical design development for the project. Design development included extensive civil engineering design, deep drainage, gas, water and district heating, LV and comms. Maylim’s project team also completed the full detailed landscape design including paving, benches, canopy structures, and soft landscaping elements. Maylim’s remit and key details of work included: site clearance and excavation of the previous landscape scheme and an extensive civils package - including three surface water outfalls into the River Thames. Finishes included 1km of Tarmac ULTICOLOUR surfacing laid to a bespoke pattern to define pedestrian and cycle paths. Approximately 2,000m2 of Vietnamese limestone paving was installed throughout the project, along with large areas of Portuguese sett paving. Maylim led the design and procurement of the benches and seating. The benches integrate stainless steel planters (housing mature trees), USB charging points, drinking fountains and feature up-lighting. Large bespoke canopies provide shelter and complete the landscape overlooking the River Thames.

aylim’s mission statement is: “We make it our mission to create beautiful spaces for the people and the future”. Maylim has an ongoing commitment and responsibility to create valued public realm and open spaces which provide an immediate positive impact on the environment and the wellbeing and health of local communities. In addition, Maylim ensures that all awarded pro ects create opportunities and benefit local stakeholders including residents, businesses, charities and community initiatives. The majority of Maylim’s projects are located at the very heart of an already established community. Maylim has a strong track record in supporting these communities and is committed to increasing this investment through charitable activities and local skills development and training. As an external works and landscaping specialist, Maylim’s diverse range of skills and expertise can be utilised within the community to make improvements and upgrades to a variety of outside spaces. Volunteers across a number of Maylim projects have collaborated with client’s, subcontractors and suppliers to update and improve community spaces to be enjoyed for many more years to come.
Supporting Communities Maylim has a social value programme that is supported by its leadership team. The programme is designed to bring out the best in Maylim’s apprentices, trainees and graduates, combining practical experience with formal training to give far-reaching insights and valuable work experience. In 2022, the company plans to enrol five apprenticeships per annum as a minimum. The programme is aligned with industry and government bodies including CITB, BALI, Landscape Institute and local universities. Maylim currently has apprentices at its King’s Cross scheme and has also worked with Battersea Power Station Development Company and Wandsworth Council to employ a further three apprentices. More recently, Maylim has developed a relationship with Bank Side Open Spaces (BOST) and The Worshipful Company of Gardeners on the Future Gardeners programme. Working with these organisations, Maylim will be providing work experience and placements for successful graduates of the programme.

Working in the Industry SHAVIGNAN SANTHAKUMAR Junior Engineer
What is your ultimate career goal? My ambition is to become a contracts manager. More specifically, would like to lead the pre-construction side of newly awarded projects and support site teams. I would like to shape this role with sustainability and environmental issues at the forefront of decision-making.
TRINA JASHARI Design Manager
What advice would you give someone considering a career in the landscape industry? I would recommend the landscape industry to anyone and everyone – there’s a role for everyone! I even got my younger brother into it, and he’s really enjoying it. It’s a fast-paced industry which is sometimes challenging, but it’s what makes it exciting and fun to be part of.
What made you choose a career in the landscape construction industry? I was previously working in systems engineering, but I’ve always had a deeper interest in the landscaping side of the industry. I love exploring the technical side of things, so this is the perfect place for me to start my career journey.
Why is the landscape industry so important? On my most recent Maylim project alone, we planted 170 trees. Planting trees and creating green space for our communities is vital in the fight against climate change. More people enjoying nature and spending time outdoors has been especially important since the pandemic.
How will you get there? Maylim has been extremely supportive since my arrival in 2017. I’ve been working closely with leadership mentors and have had the opportunity to advance my career. I tend to take things step by step – learning from my peers and gaining more experience to help me to continue my career development.
What advice would you give someone considering a career in the landscape industry? Honestly, just go for it! It’s an incredibly rewarding sector to work in – you can’t beat the feeling of witnessing people enjoying a landscape you have played a part in creating. The opportunities are endless, I guarantee there will be a role perfect for you!
Tell us a little about your role? I work across the business supporting various functions in areas of design. I’m mostly involved in co-ordinating and managing the design of various projects. I work with the estimating team on new bids and support the commercial teams, quality compliance and marketing. We’re also looking to establish a new design team
to support with draughting and design, which is an exciting opportunity to be part of. What is the toughest part of working in the industry? The constant time pressure is a tough challenge. At the moment, this is just something that comes with the territory. This being said, there is always room for change and things are likely to improve
What makes you proud to work in the industry? The ability to help create beautiful, high-quality places that positively impact people, wildlife and nature. The plants, trees and materials we use are constantly in flux and transform the landscape as time goes on.
What would make the landscape industry better in the future? I think the industry is always looking for ways to improve and as more and more people are beginning to realise the benefit of green space, landscapes are steadily becoming a bigger part of developers’ plans for new projects and schemes.
What makes you proud to work in the industry? As a London resident, I often pass through completed public realm projects I have worked on. Working in the industry, I feel a great sense of pride seeing vast amounts of people using the space, socialising and enjoying themselves – it really is what this job is all about!
ELLIOT RAPINET
What are your future career goals? As I’m new to the industry, I’m focusing on learning as much as possible to advance my knowledge. As part of Maylim’s Development Journal Programme, I’m exploring different career pathways and what training and ualifications I need to complete to reach my goals.

n 2019, Maylim Limited became an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) with the majority of the business (70%) now owned by its employees. The transition to become an EOT was developed and introduced to secure the long-term future of the business and continue the legacy of what Maylim stands for. Becoming an EOT enables the business to reward its employees who are playing an integral part in the company’s present and future success. It has also helped to increase employee involvement; maximising input and investment in regard to both personal career and company development. aylim places a significant importance on sourcing top talent from within the industry and is proud to be an equal opportunities company with an open recruitment process. Development, training and upskilling of colleagues
is central to Maylim’s success. This is evident from the number of colleagues who have progressed their roles within the company, from entry-level roles to management and even director positions. To help support this, Maylim launched its Development Journal Programme in 2021. The purpose of the Programme is to track each individual employee’s development journey by completing 1-2-1 sessions where options for career progression, training and development can be discussed and explored with their line manager or mentor. Maylim provides the required training, ualifications and resources to help colleagues progress their careers and achieve their goals. The Development Journal Programme has also had a positive impact on employee retention as colleagues are able to advance within the industry without having to move on to do so.
Despite the company growing relatively uickly over the last five years, Maylim has maintained its family business culture and close-knit teams
“Maylim believes and takes pride in the measures that have been implemented to improve the working environments for colleagues” with a positive and friendly working environment. And as a family-focused business, Maylim believes and takes pride in the measures that have been implemented to improve the working environment for colleagues. Construction is a very demanding and complex industry which is currently undergoing fundamental changes in how people work. There is still much to be done in this field, but Maylim is continuing, through colleague engagement, to develop initiatives to further improve their worklife balance. In 2021, Maylim launched its first colleague engagement survey. Colleague engagement is vital for improving colleague wellbeing and retention and also for future success. The feedback from the survey has been used to improve some areas of the business already, with further plans in development which will work to address other areas of improvement highlighted. Surveys will continue to feature in Maylim’s engagement strategy, ensuring that all colleagues are involved in the future development and direction of the business.

Lancer Square
Lancer Square is a new mixed-use development located near Kensington Palace and Gardens. The Square itself is anchored at the heart of the development and in the same historic location as the military centre of Kensington Barracks. Maylim was responsible for the creation of the garden square, providing a new high-quality public space and green oasis, inspired by the site’s palatial and horticultural heritage. Maylim’s remit included the paved areas for vehicular access, and the intricate works to the garden square including paving, retaining walls and planters finished Laurel Bank sandstone. The garden features mature tree planting and extensive planting, bespoke stone benches, and a contemporary water feature as the centrepiece. Figurative sculptures, inspired by Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, playfully look down upon a larger abstract sculpture inspired by rotated forms of the garden grid. Maylim was also responsible for section 278 works to the pavements and streets enclosing Lancer Square for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. References Client: Chessington Investments Ltd. International Quarter London In 2017, Maylim was awarded the four-year external works package for the International Quarter London development in Stratford by Lendlease. Maylim’s remit included the design and installation of the public realm between plots S5 and S6 buildings, now known as Endeavour Square. Maylim was also contracted to supply and install site-wide technology including CCTV and Wi-Fi. Chinese granite and Indian sandstone paving was used across the scheme with bespoke stainless-steel train tracks installed throughout the paved areas, providing a truly unique public realm. Endeavour Square is also home to the Troika’s Labyrinth of a Straight-line – Maylim was responsible for the installation of this complex feature comprising one continuous line that changes direction according to recursive pathfinding algorithmic rules. The public realm features tree grilles, a raised pedestrian crossing, HVM bollards, lighting columns and timber seating atop pre-cast concrete raised planters. Soft landscaping works included the construction of tree pits, planting of flower beds and trees and the installation of a complex irrigation system. fter 20 years in business, 2022 sees the launch of Maylim Landscapes. Maylim Landscapes has been introduced as part of Maylim’s growth strategy and to service the company’s growing portfolio of roof terrace, soft landscaping and domestic projects. With this in mind, the decision was made to develop a complementary brand that would have relevance to these markets and provide an identity that was familiar with Maylim’s client base. Lead by Jack Skinner, head of soft landscaping, Maylim Landscapes will firstly tender, procure and deliver soft landscaping to commercial projects for Maylim. It will provide a fully selfdelivered service, offering clients the very best in quality, value and service.
of which being a disconnect to smaller, soft only and domestic clients. In time, Maylim Landscapes will grow to become firmly established and identified as a soft landscaping specialist, servicing the markets in which Maylim currently has little activity. Adam Wraight, pre-construction soft landscaping manager, joined the Maylim team in late 2020. In supporting Jack, Adam takes overall responsibility for estimating and procurement; working with Maylim’s established supply chain, and developing new relationships with
suppliers, to provide soils and substrate, nursery stock, turf and planting sundries. Maylim Landscapes will introduce the ability to self-deliver Maylim’s postcompletion maintenance obligations. This will support clients in the establishment of the landscape schemes Maylim has created, ensuring a seamless transition and knowledge transfer to the team’s responsible for long-term stewardship and maintenance of the landscape. Maylim Landscapes has been launched as fossil fuel free having invested in fully electric vehicles and equipment.

To achieve this, it was felt that it needed an identity that was relevant, particularly for the domestic market. JACK SKINNER
Head of Soft Landscaping
Jack has recently taken on the new role of head of soft landscaping at Maylim. As part of this, Jack is involved in the BOST Future Gardeners Scheme, nurturing emerging talent into the industry. Maylim Landscapes is partnering with Writtle and Capel Manor College, engaging and providing insight to students in regard to the commercial side of the landscape industry. Jack is enjoying this side of his role with the opportunity to give back as a mentor. He is looking forward to continuing to build positive relationships with key associations to further promote landscape and horticultural careers.
ADAM WRAIGHT
Soft Landscaping Manager (preconstruction)
Adam is an integral part of the pre-construction team, leading the estimating on soft landscape elements of a scheme. This involves liaising with Maylim’s supply chain for materials and operational teams to prepare competitive tenders for clients. At the point of a contract being secured, Adam assists the project site team with the procurement and sourcing of materials, focusing first on the selection of tree stock in the nursery and placing contract grow orders for plants. Adam’s role will grow further as Maylim Landscapes begins to tender for soft only and domestic projects.

“The two biggest challenges and opportunities facing the industry are diversity and climate change”

s Maylim embarks upon the next 20 years, the two biggest challenges and opportunities facing the industry are diversity and climate change. Whilst the skills shortage has been the Achilles’ heel of the sector, the available pool of people is reducing. Statistically there are less people entering the industry than are exiting. It leads us to ask the question: Has the industry lost its appeal? Fundamentally, the sector has a crucial role to play in the green recovery: repairing damaged habitats, degraded landscapes and neglected places; delivering green infrastructure, watersensitive urban design and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS); protecting the environment, creating social benefits and delivering robust, ethical governance for the basis of a company’s ESG strategy. Maylim has commenced its own ESG strategy which will align with the future business strategy and values, setting out priorities to drive objectives. From shifting to renewable energy sources, reducing travel and better repurposing of the landscape, to adopting low carbon alternatives and actively supporting new technologies, we all have a responsibility and a role to play. With the ambition to become a net zero carbon business by 2030, Maylim will focus on collaborating with clients, specifiers and the supply chain to achieve this. Taking this into account, the industry can’t stop climate change altogether, but it can have a significant impact on turning the tide and a central role in mitigation. Maylim also has ambitions to tackle the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) challenges the industry faces through the creation of a more diverse and inclusive working environment. The EDI statistics vary across the built environment and horticultural sector, and each has its own challenges. A collective effort must be made to send out a strong message that this industry is a viable and attractive career choice for people from all backgrounds. The industry needs to become more proactive in its efforts to recruit and retain; changing stereotypes and making construction an inclusive industry. While in some ways the industry is more open now than it has traditionally been, the representation of minority groups still remains low. With a large proportion of the industry consisting of white males, there is a significant risk of unconscious bias in the decision making. This creates an environment lacking in innovation and different perspectives, which a diverse workforce promotes. Maylim is aware there are areas where it must work harder. he first step is to address workforce e uality, diversity and inclusion. The company is currently exploring ways to encourage more people to pursue a career in the industry; prioritising initiatives that create opportunities for groups that have historically felt excluded or unwelcome. Progressive and positive policies and behaviours must be developed, with a real commitment behind them. If the industry is to realise its ambitions in tackling climate change and diversity, change needs to start with leadership, including that of our trade bodies. he most significant opportunities are to leverage these ambitions to attract talent and spark interest. After all, the industry is only as good as its people!
