elcome to this Made in Britain special supplement for Garden Centre Retail.

Made in Britain brings together more than 2,000 British manufacturers by their licensed use of the official Made in Britain collective mark, which is trusted by consumers and businesses alike. Introduced just eight years ago, the Made in Britain mark is today recognised by half (50%) of British shoppers, according to research conducted earlier this year polling 2,000 adults across the UK. Many garden centres have a focus on stocking Britishmanufactured products, as they look to promote sustainability and localisation. It is always a pleasure to walk into one and to see the Made in Britain mark on display! Our membership community includes a diverse range of British makers of gardening items, outdoor cooking and living solutions, garden furniture and much more. Across the following pages you’ll get to know a few of them. Visit the product directory on the Made in Britain website – www.madeinbritain.org – to learn about dozens more! MADE IN BRITAIN THE OFFICIAL MARK SUPPORTING BRITISH MANUFACTURING GROWTH By Made in Britain CEO John Pearce

LEADING NAMES SHARE HOW JOINING THE INITIATIVE HAS BEEN A GAME-CHANGING PARTNERSHIP FOR THEIR BUSINESSES

I

n recent years, British garden centres have undergone a remarkable transformation, moving far beyond their traditional function of merely providing plants and garden necessities. These horticultural havens now embrace a truly diverse array of products and services, with sustainability and British manufacturing taking centre-stage. Today, they are fantastic places to discover some of the leading lights of British manufacturing.

The genesis of the Made in Britain initiative, just 10 years ago, was driven by the aim of unifying British manufacturers with an official collective mark, supporting them in achieving more sales and promoting the sector as a whole. Still true to that core value today, with more than 2,000 members licensed to use the mark, our community of manufacturers is as proud of its standards and values as it is of supporting the British manufacturing sector 6

and the wider UK economy. Stuart Dantzic, managing director of Suffolk-based Caribbean Blinds says: “We want to lead by example by offering quality, value and excellence through our design, installation and service. Because of this, we are committed to strengthening our support within the sector and successfully promoting our ‘Made in Britain’ status in any way that we can.” “We are thrilled to be part of a growing community of more than 2,000 like-minded British manufacturers. Being a member of Made in Britain opens doors to new opportunities, whilst allowing us to benefit from an enhanced reputation amongst our customers and other stakeholders.” British consumers are increasingly seeking out products that have been produced by UK manufacturing firms that support localisation, which is a trend that Made in Britain wholeheartedly supports and promotes.

By sourcing materials, labour, and products closer to home, companies can reduce their carbon emissions, support the local economy and community, and improve the overall sustainability of their operations. “We’ve been in business for 40 years in our spiritual home of rural Shropshire, and always been tremendously proud of our British roots,” says Tom Clifford, general manager at Made in Britain member Westminster Stone, a third generation, family-run business established in 1985, specialising in British-made flagstones and tiles. “As a long-term licensee with National Trust, joining Made in Britain was a perfectly natural step for us. It embodies our ethical, low carbon footprint standards and illustrates it to all our buyers and specifiers with an official mark. Making sure our key strategic trading relationships are reminded of our British manufacturing credentials with a recognised mark is key to maintaining our market position for many years to come” Research conducted by Made in Britain (together with OnePoll) in January, polling gardencentreretail.com

Feature 1,000 British business decision makers and 2,000 consumers across the country, finds that 66% of UK firms and 50% of consumers today recognise the Made in Britain mark. Of those businesses that recognise the mark, 61% say seeing the mark on a product makes them more inclined to purchase it –

66% OF UK FIRMS AND 50% OF CONSUMERS TODAY RECOGNISE THE MADE IN BRITAIN MARK while among consumers it is 66% that respond to the mark in this way. A significant majority of British consumers (58%) prefer to buy UK-manufactured products gardencentreretail.com

over alternatives imported from other countries, our research finds. Remarkably, of those that prefer to buy British-made products, more than half (54%) are prepared to buy British “regardless of cost.” Thus, there is high public demand for more British goods on the market – and also for a clear mark that helps shoppers find what they are looking for. Beyond the licensed use of the mark, Made in Britain supports its members by promoting and highlighting their stories and the sector as a whole; fostering collaboration between British manufacturers; and representing our membership via engagement with the DBT and other government departments, at industry events, and in the media. “What I love most is the product and people diversity we see at the membership welcome meetings,” says Made in Britain COO Ilika Copeland. “With more than half our members making industrial or trade products, they often bring a show-and-tell item along that many people wouldn’t be able to identify or even recognise at all. Sharing their marketing challenges with other like-

minded manufacturing people selling everyday goods like lawn-mowers, tools and household goods stimulates creativity and encourages collaboration.” Members complete a comprehensive listing for their member profiles on the Made in Britain website and can publish up to 25 pages in our online Product Directory and as many news items as they wish. The ring-fenced data environment assures all visitors to our website that they are searching only within the world of British manufactured products made by the members of Made in Britain. British manufacturers face a lot of challenges, particularly in today’s acutely uncertain economic times – but being a part of our community of members is proven to make it easier for members to get their message out to the business community and the public at large, which drives sales. The official Made in Britain mark signposts people towards the choices that genuinely help them find and purchase products made closer to where they are needed – closer to home – Made in Britain.

Is buying British

IMPORTANT? GARDEN CENTRE RETAIL ASKS THE GARDEN RETAIL SECTOR ABOUT THEIR THOUGHTS ON BUYING BRITISH-MADE PRODUCTS

B

uying British typically refers to the act of purchasing products that are made or produced in the United Kingdom. It’s often seen to support the local economy, promote domestic industries, and sometimes as a means of ensuring higher quality or adherence to certain standards.

The idea is that by choosing goods made in Britain, consumers contribute to the country’s economic growth and job creation. It can also be associated with a sense of national pride and a desire to preserve and promote local craftsmanship and manufacturing. Do garden centres buy British? When asked if the garden centres buy British where possible, 92.3% responded with yes. British-made products may align better with local preferences and seasons. They’re likely designed and manufactured with the local climate in mind. This can lead to products that are better suited for the specific needs of the customers in that region. There’s also the environmental aspect. Transporting goods over long distances can contribute to carbon emissions and pollution. By choosing products made closer to home,

garden centres can reduce their carbon footprint and promote truly environmentally friendly practices. The limitations 38.5% of respondents said that the thing holding them back from buying more British-made products is the price. It’s often the case that these products are more expensive for the end user, and garden centres understand the importance of offering products at a variety of different price points. Just over 23% believe that the ranges from British manufacturers don’t fit within the store’s current offering, and a further 23% said that the ranges from British manufacturers are not of sufficient quality to swap for their imported wares. The Made in Britain mark Made in Britain adheres to advice on countryof-origin labelling included in the Trade Descriptions Act 1968. Country of origin is therefore the country in which a product last underwent a final treatment or process

resulting in a substantial change. Only members of Made in Britain are licensed to use the official, protected marks. All companies that apply to use the Made in Britain mark or the Made in Britain Northern Ireland mark may be asked to submit written evidence of where they manufacture their products. Just shy of 54% of respondents believe that the Made in Britain licenced official mark, the mark that members of the Made in Britain organisation use to show the product is produced in the UK, represents products of higher quality, whereas 23% of

respondents said that the mark represents quality on occasion. Further, just over 92% of respondents said that to them, the Made in Britain mark means a product is more sustainable. Buying British – a customer’s perspective The preference for buying British-made products can vary among the British public. Some people actively seek out and prefer locally made goods, valuing the support of domestic industries, the potential for higher quality, and the positive impact on the local economy. This sentiment is often tied to notions of patriotism and a desire to

preserve traditional craftsmanship. However, not everyone prioritises buying British, and factors such as price, convenience, and product availability also play significant roles in consumer choices. Some may prioritise affordability or features over the origin of the product. Globalisation has made a wide variety of goods accessible, and consumers may choose products based on a combination of factors. In recent years, there has been an increased

Interview

An Interview with

TRACEY VOSS TRACEY VOSS IS CEO OF TAILOR-GRACE LTD, THE BRITISH PET PRODUCT SUPPLIER WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS ON SUSTAINABILITY, EDUCATION AND WELLNESS. RECENTLY, TAILOR-GRACE LAUNCHED THE WORLD’S FIRST ECO-FRIENDLY COMPACT CAT LITTER, HUSKALOO, WHICH PERFECTLY SUMS UP THE COMPANY’S ETHOS.

W

ith 25 years of experience in the sector, Tracey Voss has seen a lot of change since embarking on her journey. When Tailor-Grace was formed, Voss says, it was formed because “somebody in the industry needed to recognise that we’ve got to put pet before profit.” Voss understands her ultimate consumer cannot buy for themselves and says it’s very important that we recognise that pets are not people. Therefore, the people doing the buying are the ones that have to use judgement about what’s good, bad, or indifferent.

“We must also recognise, and this is the heart of our business, most people are not vets 12

or animal experts. Therefore, the onus and the responsibility of delivering the right product, at the right quality, for the right reasons, rests solely and very squarely on every manufacturer in this industry,” Voss says. The passion that Voss has for teaching pet owners about the good, the bad and the indifferent about the industry is unrivalled. “I talk a lot, certainly recently, about the lack of education in the industry,” she says. “We’re poor at giving guidance. We’re good at selling what pets don’t need, whether that be nail polish, or a denim jacket. Products that truly deliver what the animal needs through education of its owner are poorly represented.” Tailor-Grace has two brands that it’s targeting the garden centre market with – Huskaloo and Oggi’s – both of which come with a host of educational opportunities for retailers to pass on to their customers. Huskaloo is the world’s first eco-friendly compact cat litter. It is made from coconut husks and is a by-product of the coconut industry. It is a completely renewable and sustainable raw material. Because it is so different to other cat litters there is a strong focus on educating both consumers and retailers.

Made in Britain Supplement / Garden Centre Retail

“We want to support our retailers with an extensive package of support including pointof-sale material, consumer helplines and store training – both virtual and physical in-store training. This training focuses on how the product works, and very importantly, why we need Huskaloo. “We recognise it’s a long journey but we know it’s going to be a rewarding one for the customer, cat and the planet,” as Voss says: “Saving the planet one cat at a time”. Sustainability It’s the sustainability credentials that really sets its products apart. Huskaloo is a 100% compostable product, with nothing going to landfill. All the packaging is FSC approved, and even the ink is vegetable ink. The wrap that goes around the brick is 100% PET fully recyclable plastic. Many of the plethora of cat litter products are produced from clay substrates, or silica, both materials are stripmined. Strip mining is an environmental disaster that destroys natural wildlife habitats. “We’ve had multiple new materials come onto market, such as pea protein and others,” explains Voss. “These are holding themselves out to be eco. If you are really going to deliver eco, you cannot be in a bulky, heavy bag because you haven’t gardencentreretail.com

Interview

WE RECOGNISE IT’S A LONG JOURNEY, BUT WE KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE A REWARDING ONE FOR THE PLANET, THE PET AND THE OWNER produced a true eco product. This is what makes Huskaloo so different. It is compact – a month’s worth of product weighs under a kilo. A month’s worth of clay product weighs about 15kg. (An interesting statistic, if you filled one arctic lorry with Huskaloo, you would have enough cat litter for sixty cats for all their lifetime, averaging 15 years). The reduction in the carbon footprint alone is phenomenal. “If you look in any retailer, they have rows of cat litter. It’s heavy, bulky and dusty. It’s a nightmare and an environmental disaster.” However, following several approaches to retailers, Voss didn’t appear to have the support she’d hoped for. As a supplier of various sustainable products, Voss is clear that manufacturers of new sustainable products need more support from retailers. She explains: “We know that 75% of cat litter is sold from physical stores. Therefore, they

gardencentreretail.com

can help us with that. They’re also helping themselves because there’s less transport costs and our product takes up less space on the shelves. “I can see now why people get frustrated by greenwashing. There’s still a lot of that going on and for me our biggest journey isn’t selling the Huskaloo product, it’s the education on why we need it.” Educating pet owners A question asked by many pet owners that Voss speaks to focuses on the product not being flushable – a topic that Voss is never shy in answering. Voss says: “There are about 15 brands on the market that say their product is flushable. We have a statement from Anglian Water Board and from Water UK that says under no circumstance, is any cat litter flushable. “The reasons for that are not just blockages, which obviously is a problem for the water

boards, but cat faeces can have the toxocara bacteria. I didn’t realise this, but that is one of very few parasites that the waterboards can’t clean from the water system. Even though they have filtration systems at the treatment plants, it can get through.” Another often controversial topic Voss isn’t afraid to discuss is the process of scooping up cat waste. “When we started to look at litter scoops for example, we started to think about why we do this – who has trained somebody to walk through the house with the scoop carrying clay clumped urine and all the bacteria, or animal faeces, risking tripping over and throwing the waste on the floor,” she says. “Where has this practice evolved from? Huskaloo doesn’t clump; it makes clumping obsolete as it traps the liquid in the fibre. We bag faeces as a dog owner, why don’t we do that with cats?” Tailor-Grace is now looking at how it can give away free waste bags in the Huskaloo packs, and hopes to introduce this in early 2024. “Again, this is a chance to educate customers, with verified data supported by results sent back from a laboratory,” Voss says. “We sent some used scoops to a lab. Bear in mind these scoops were cleaned with a high street top brand disinfectant. As far as the owner was concerned,

Made in Britain Supplement / Garden Centre Retail

13

Interview they were sterilised clean, but they were full of bacteria and mould. You have them around the house, the child comes along and plays with it – it’s not a clever idea. The health implications around clay, and around the handling of litter, we must educate because there are increasing cases of people with asthma that use clay and [are exposed to] the dust that causes. There are also cases of respiratory diseases in cats who scrape after using the tray.” Oggi’s Oggi’s oven biscuit and cake mixes are all natural, calorie-controlled, home baked treats. Voss explains: “They are easy and fun to make, with top quality ingredients and no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives. We encourage dog owners to add their own superfoods such as spinach, butternut squash, raspberries or blueberries, giving their dogs a healthy and nutritional treat.” As Voss says, “nothing says love like home-made.” Tailor-Grace also recently launched Oggi’s Birthday Box. This is designed to strengthen the bonding experience between the owner and their dog by offering a fun, inclusive and nutritious celebration. Made in Britain Proud of her British roots, Voss says her decision to keep product manufacturing in the UK is a personal one. “My father was a butcher, and he had a high street shop. That shop was killed 14

Made in Britain Supplement / Garden Centre Retail

when the supermarkets came along. I said to him as a kid that when I’m older, I’m going to produce a product that supports the British economy and the British retailers. I want to hold that promise.” Although coconuts can’t be grown in the UK, so some of the raw material is shipped in from overseas, all products are put together in the UK. The quality control, packaging and printing, and everything else involved with the creation of the product, is Britain-produced. “There almost certainly still is the connection between Britain and quality, that’s not ever changed,” Voss concludes.
