WELCOME W

elcome to the October issue. Here at Pro Arb we're excited that the first ever FutureArb, our one-day trade event, is fast approaching. Make sure you have the date in your diary – Tuesday 17 November at Sandown Park Racecourse. The event aims to bring the industry together under one roof and will be co-locating with sister landscaping show FutureScape. There will be trade stands where you can find the latest products on the market and an amazing line-up of speakers and additional events. It'll be well worth the visit. Find more details on page 27. Meanwhile in this issue we have regular contributors Jon Ives finishing his series on ash dieback and David Vickers on selecting the right pulley for offset winching. We also have a brand new contributor, Plymouth-based tree surgeon Anthony Maunder, who is offering advice on rigging techniques. He starts with

the basics, insisting that for up and coming tree surgeons, the cradle rigging technique is a must to get right. This month Wayne Elwell is the subject of our big interview. Wayne has been in the industry for 20 years and is more than aware of the toll the industry can take on your body. Eight years ago he retired from climbing to set up his own business, About…Trees. You can read his interview on page 19. As well as all of the above, there's our regular kit section with the latest PPE and chippers on the market. Our Toolbox feature discovers what kit arb company Trojan Tree Care is using, while our Top Ten Tips page gives advice on becoming an Arboricultural Association approved contractor. Enjoy the read, and we look forward to seeing you at FutureArb next month.

WYEVALE NURSERIES TO SUPPORT NATO Hereford-based Wyevale Nurseries will provide support and advice to the National Association of Tree Officers (NATO) across England since becoming an ally this September. Wyevale’s recent support for NATO is grounded in the belief that it has a complete tree offering and means to support the arboriculture industry at a time when it is challenged on local authority funding. Adam Dunnett, sales and marketing director at Wyevale

Nurseries, said: “We will be offering supply and a wealth of advice and assistance so that we can back the vital work of putting trees into the urban landscape. We are so delighted to be able to support NATO going forwards.” Adam expanded further, explaining how the tree wholesaler raises seedlings and transplants from local seed provenances before maturing into

full-sized standard trees – both field and container-grown. NATO is a UK-based independent group of local authority tree officers that represents and distributes the views and concerns of tree officers nationwide. Wyevale Nurseries offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to foresters, local authorities, landowners, garden centres and landscape contractors. www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk

Four councils in West London have paid out more than £1m in compensation for buildings damaged by tree subsidence over the past two years. Subsidence occurs when the ground moves due to changes in soil moisture levels, which can be greatly affected by tree roots. As a result, the shifting ground can disfigure buildings and cause wall cracks. Harrow Council paid the most for a single claim at £177,284, and the authority’s overall cost over the last two years totals £457,418 – higher than Ealing, Hillingdon, and Kensington & Chelsea.

DMM INTERNATIONAL RECALLS CARABINERS DMM International has issued a product recall for a specific range of its carabiners, subject to user inspection. DMM’s reasoning for the recall is due to the gate pusher’s inadvertent movement, in turn causing a fault with the locking mechanism. The manufacturer reports that in a small percentage of carabiners, the interaction between the internal coil spring and the gate pusher may cause the gate pusher to displace, potentially preventing the gate from closing

or the mechanism from locking completely. The recall is inclusive of all the products displayed in the table to the right, all models, colours and gate types are potentially affected by the dysfunction. One of the country’s largest wild trees, threatened by the HS2 rail line in Warwickshire, is in the running to be named Tree of the Year. The Cubbington Pear Tree, believed to be 250 years old, has been shortlisted by the Woodland Trust and is pitted against nine other trees from across England. Standing at the top of a hill near South Cubbington Wood, it is thought to be the second largest wild pear tree in the United Kingdom. The tree sits on the proposed phase 1 route of the HS2 line from London to Birmingham and could be lost

when construction begins. Beccy Speight, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, said: “This contest reminds us how trees have been an integral part of this country’s history and play an important role in our lives today. We hope everyone who votes will also support our campaign to create a register for all our Trees of National Special Interest.” www.coventrytelegraph.net

TEN-YEAR NEW FOREST WOODLAND MANAGEMENT PLAN ANNOUNCED

UK SCIENTISTS GERMINATE SEEDS OF ENDANGERED JAPANESE BIRCH UK scientists have successfully germinated seeds from the critically endangered Japanese Birch, a species that has just 21 known trees remaining. The seeds were collected last year during an expedition to a remote location in mountains near Tokyo. Experts suggest that the remaining wild population of

ANCIENT PEAR TREE THREATENED BY HS2 IS TREE OF THE YEAR CONTENDER

Betula chichibuensis is too small to sustain itself unaided. The young trees will be shared with other arboretums in an effort to help conserve the threatened species. There are also plans to plant a grove of the trees, known as a seed orchard, to provide an ongoing supply of seeds. www.bbc.co.uk

A ten-year woodland management plan has been devised by New Forest parish council and the New Forest Land Advice Service (NFLAS). In Milford on Sea, parish councillors and conservation volunteers partnered the NFLAS with a view to protect trees in the heavily wooded village on the outskirts of the New Forest.

The woodlands contains a range of native trees, including oak, ash and alder, yet it is the presence of non-native trees that have impacted on its native flora and wildlife. Together a salvation plan has been put in place to preserve the area which features many Sites of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI) including the reduction of trees and harmful foreign plants. Primarily, a small number of trees have been targeted for removal to combat the woodlands over-population and improve its overall health. www.dailyecho.co.uk

GRAYCLIFFE HOMES FINED £35K FOR FELLING CONSERVATION TREES Harrogate-based property development firm Graycliffe Homes has been fined over £35,000 for cutting down trees in a conservation area. The company’s planning application to erect 14 dwellings on College Road in June, 2014 was opposed by the Ripon’s planning committee following a public complaint that two of the trees had been cut down at the conservational site. Despite receiving early warning from Harrogate Borough Council (HBC) that tree felling in the area was prohibited, Graycliffe Homes proceeded to cut down the six trees in April before acting against a tree preservation order two months later. The application was refused and on September 2 the

company pleaded guilty to all seven offences at Harrogate Magistrate’s Court in a prosecution brought by HBC. The company was fined £4,000 for each of the six trees cut down and £6,000 in respect of the protected tree. Graycliffe Homes was also ordered to pay costs of £7,417 and a victim surcharge of £120, incurring a total penalty of £37,582. Alan Gilleard, assistant arboriculture manager at HBC concluded it would take three decades for replacement trees to reach similar maturity levels. www.ripongazette.co.uk

GREEN-TECH PROVIDES RURAL TREE PLANTING PRODUCTS TO GLENDALE CIVIC TREES Plant suppliers and tree relocation specialists Glendale Civic Trees has formed a parkland of trees and shrubs for a Gloucestershire client in partnership with Green-tech. Brought in to resurrect the grounds of a large private home, Glendale was faced with a challenge as many areas contained underlying rock close to the surface. Green-tech supported the

tree planting by supplying the anchor system which included three and four legs for the larger semi-mature trees (45cm in girth). The difficult ground conditions forced an overhead guying system to be implemented over standard methods. Civic Trees has completed the first phase and will re-start planting of additional trees in the winter.

CHALARA ASH DIEBACK DISEASE FOUND IN LAKE DISTRICT The Forestry Commission has confirmed that a lethal treethreatening fungus has been found at four sites in the Lake District with the potential to kill off thousands of trees. New data from the FC reveals that the harmful Chalara ash dieback disease has been sighted in the far south of the National Park, plus two sites between Ambleside and Kendal, and one between Ambleside and Keswick. A spokesman for the FC said the symptoms found in the recently discovered cases were ‘very subtle’ and predominantly affected the

area’s young trees. “One site is on privately owned farmland, one is alongside a country lane, another is on roadside land, and one is in a privately owned planted woodland,” they said. The disease has reached ash trees at 11 other widely distributed sites in southern, eastern and northern parts of Cumbria. Forestry expert Professor Ted Wilson, director of the Penrith-based Silviculture Research International, said the arrival of ash dieback in the Lakes was ‘concerning, but unsurprising’. www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk

UK TREE OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST INCLUDES GAME OF THRONES AVENUE This year’s shortlist for the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year competition includes an avenue of beech trees featured in Game of Thrones The public is asked to vote for its favourite tree in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the winning tree in each country entered into 2016’s European Tree of the Year competition. Over 200 nominations for special trees have been cut down to shortlists for each country, with ten on the list in England, seven in Wales and six in both Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The six trees shortlisted in Northern Ireland include ‘the Dark Hedges’, an avenue of beech trees featured in Game Of Thrones as the King’s Road and said to be haunted by a grey lady and two lime trees which have grown together as one and have become a symbol of peace and unity. www.westerndailypress.co.uk

49TH ANNUAL AA AMENITY CONFERENCE 2015 ‘SUSTAINABILITY AND THE URBAN FOREST’ DRAWS IN RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE More than 350 delegates took part in one of the most successful Amenity Conferences in recent memory. Lord Framlingham’s keynote speech focused on ‘the challenges facing trees’, pointing out that there are over 500 ancient woodlands under threat across the UK while a rapidly growing body of evidence shows trees ‘massively improve the quality of all our lives’. The three-day conference attracted practitioners and academics from across the globe with speakers from Australia and the US bringing fresh perspectives on a wide range of topics. New masterclasses Attended by over 400 delegates the event also featured a series of Masterclass Workshops on the final afternoon run by Professor Ed Gilman, Paul Muir, Frank Rinn and Gary Watson. The

workshops were welcomed as an interesting way of concluding the conference. Many delegates also commented on the larger exhibition area which brought in 33 companies providing information and expertise across all aspects of the sector. Jago Keen, re-elected for a third time as Chairman of the Association, closed the conference with a plea to communicate the learnings and momentum both to the wider industry and to a broader audience. “We need to take a Savile Row approach to our wider responsibilities to the general public and tailor our message into language that mobilises public opinion and enables individuals to take their part in the drive to protect, nurture and maintain our national tree stock.” The AA 2016 Conference will take place at Keele University, 4-7 Sept.

The AA Registered Consultant scheme (AARC) has been running for over 40 years and is recognised nationally as the gold standard for consultants who have reached a set of rigorously maintained business and professional standards. Jonathan Cocking, representative of the RC Group, says: “Any consultants currently working in the sector should seriously be considering becoming an AARC – the rewards both commercially and personally are considerable.”

RC scheme manager Paul Smith is available to discuss the accreditation process at paul@trees.org.uk or on 01242 522152. Find out more at: www.trees.org.uk/What-isan-Arboricultural-AssociationRegistered-Consultant

BUSINESS TIPS

HOW TO

SPECIFY TREE WORK Jonathan Hazell on how to interpret clients’ needs and communicate realistic solutions

T

he first step in specifying tree work is discovering what your client actually wants. That may be quite straightforward. A local authority will want to implement a cyclical work programme so it can demonstrate that it has done what is reasonable to meet its duty of care. A client may want to remove as many trees as possible to emphasise the charm of an iconic building hidden by trees. Some clients will simply want an excuse to remove a tree and you may find yourself advocating longterm retention with appropriate management. Once you have established the outcome required, do your homework and look for any constraints that would prevent you meeting your client’s

12 Pro Arb | October 2015

Page012_JonHazell.indd 12

expectations. Common constraints include conservation areas, Tree Preservation Orders, birds or bats, local interpretation of the National Planning Policy Framework or the need for a felling licence. It is worth clarifying with the client for a cyclical programme whether they will accept liability for any breach of legislation if you are issued with an instruction to proceed. How to write the specification that will deliver what your client wants – who is it for? Some clients are deliciously naïve about how their needs can be met and it will be up to you to go through the options with them carefully to reach a consensus on which is most appropriate. I question the value of saying just that you will “crown reduce the tree in accordance with BS 3998” – if you explained the jargon on the doorstep will clients still remember when your quote arrives? They say a picture is worth a thousand words so mark up a photo to show what you mean, or use the diagrams from BS 3998, as well as the words. In some situations stump grinding, whist desirable, may not be acceptable; you will need to explain why. If you are acting as the tree’s advocate you will

need to be sympathetic to your client and explain why certain outcomes will not be acceptable. It is unfortunate that sometimes your client will be disappointed, felling will not be allowed and to achieve their desired end there will be repeated costs for repeated work. When it comes to delivery under a cyclical programme (generally a term contract), the client will have specified what they want and so all you need to do is make sure your teams know what is required. Some of these specifications are extreme and look unpalatable, but they may be forced upon the client by other considerations such as liability or health and safety. Worked examples produced by an experienced team will help

to show the other teams what is expected. For the private client your team will simply need to follow their works instructions, the bundle containing the work specification, the marked up photos, the dynamic risk assessment, the COSHH assessments etc. This may all of course be irrelevant when the client reads your quote… ABOUT JONATHAN HAZELL Jonathan Hazell’s career began on the tools with the Ealing tree gang in 1980. Senior roles in the public, charity and commercial sectors followed and in October 2011 Jonathan established his own arboricultural consultancy practice. www.jhazell.com

Ealing Council – Arboricultural Services Contract 2016-25 Ealing is one of the greenest boroughs in London and has long held the reputation as the ʻQueen of the Suburbsʼ, largely due to its extensive street tree planting and Ealingʼs spectacular parks. Through a new Contract structure Ealing Council is now seeking tender applications from small, medium and large sized companies in order deliver the upkeep of this highly valued urban forest. The contract is for three years from 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2019 with two possible extensions of three years in 2019 and 2022. The contract has been divided into three service areas; Arboricultural Works (Lots 1-5), Basal Growth (Lots 6-8) and Planting (Lots 9-11).

Arboricultural Works (per year) –Lots 1-5

Through an open tender process applicants are invited to bid for individual or all Lots but the awarding of each Lot will focus on delivering the best outcome for the Council. Contractors will be invited to offer discounts on the award of multiple Lots within each service area (Arboricultural Works, Basal Growth and Planting) but each company must meet the Councilʼs financial turnover threshold (annual turnover must be two times greater than the contract value) for the Lot or Lots awarded.

● Lot 1 will include Planned Programmed Highways Arboricultural works and a 24 hour Emergency Call-Out service for 122 days, between April 1st and July 31st. ● Lot 2 will include Planned Programmed Parks and Housing Arboricultural works and a 24 hour Emergency Call-Out service for 122 days, between August 1st and November 30th. ● Lot 3 will include Planned Programmed Highways Arboricultural works and a 24 hour Emergency Call-Out service for 121 days, December 1st and March 31st. ● Lot 4 will undertake Planned Programmed Highways Arboricultural works only. ● Lot 5 will include Reactive (packaged on 1st and 15th each month) and Urgent (one to five day completion period) arboricultural works within the borough throughout the year and across all Council sites.

Basal Growth –Lots 6-8

● Lots (6, 7 and 8) include the removal of Basal Growth from street trees across the borough; each Lot will require two rounds of work in June and late September.

Planting –Lots 9-11 ● Lot 9 will deliver the Councils routine tree planting programme. ● Lot 10 & 11 will deliver extra tree planting in years when additional funding has been sourced.

Tenders must be submitted before 16:00 on 30th October 2015 and any questions must be asked using the portal before 16:00 on 16th October visit: https://www.londontenders.org/portal/CMS.nsf/vHomePage/fSection?OpenDocument.

TECHNICAL

To begin at the beginning, Anthony Maunder describes one of the most basic but important rigging techniques for up and coming arborists to learn

FROM THE

CRADLE TO THE PAVE

The cradle rigging technique I’m sure there will be a few old hands sighing, but for up and coming tree surgeons, this technique is a must. Like all climbing operations, learning in a hazard free environment is key to confidence in the real world. Setting up When any rigging is performed, a suitable anchor point is key! Obviously strength is important, but position is a game changer. Your pulley needs to be above your piece and not too far away. You don’t want your cut section to fall, you want it to drift sideways like a cloud on a gentle breeze. Rigging it up When cradling the piece you have to gauge roughly where its centre of gravity is. When you attach the two strops, the karabiner should be above this fulcrum point. Here’s the secret Believe it or not, you don’t have

Page015_Anthony Maunder Cradle to the Pave.indd 15

to cut your branch piece to the collar. Obviously you want as much as possible of your branch to find home on the floor by the chipper, but to give yourself a better chance of your cut section remaining horizontal, you need to get out on the limb. The first strop When placing your first strop (the one furthest away), the point where

the karabiner joins the rigging line to the strop will be above the centre of gravity of the piece you cut. Now place your second strop (ideally the same length as the first) onto the piece, sliding the sling back as far as you can to tighten it. This is where you need to stop and think about how far back from the second strop you are going to cut in order that the centre of gravity is beneath the rigging line. Once you have gauged where to cut, click in the duffs, flick down the visor, put a sideways gob/dip cut in and tickle the throttle. As with any new skill, I advise you try the cradle lower, in a ‘perfect’ environment where you can set up a pulley directly above the limb, removing the risk of free fall and shock loading. In this environment you can hone your judgment of where to cut. Something I consistently have to remind myself of is that the tip is generally heavier than it looks,

ollowing the discovery of Chalara ash dieback in the UK in 2012, more than 1000 sites have been affected. Approximately 60% of confirmed cases are in woodland and the wider environment with the remaining 40% in nurseries or recently planted sites. While the immediate future for the native ash in the UK may seem bleak, significant progress is being made in identifying potentially tolerant trees that may eventually become part of a breeding and restocking programme. Nornex, a consortium of 11 research organisations in the UK, Denmark and Norway, is carrying out research in part financed by the UK government funded Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The main focus of the research is the genome sequencing of both the fungus (recently renamed Hymenocyphus fraxinea) and ash trees to try to determine the key

ASH DIEBACK MOVING FORWARD AND EMBRACING GENETIC DIVERSITY

Despite heavy losses, there is hope in the fight against ash dieback, says Jonathan Ives factors involved in the infection cycle. Much of this is being carried out by The John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory and The Genome Analysis Centre, all based at Norwich Research Park. In Denmark two specimens known as ‘tree 18’ and ‘tree 35’, have been identified as showing tolerance to the disease.

“Significant progress is being made in identifying potentially tolerant trees that may eventually become part of a breeding and restocking programme”

16 Pro Arb | October 2015

Page016_Jon Ives.indd 16

Essentially, this means that whilst leaves may become infected the fungus is not able to progress beyond the leaf petiole and cause the catastrophic dieback shown in the majority of infected trees. Trees 18 and 35 are healthy specimens despite being surrounded by dead and dying ash trees. They have had their genomes sequenced and so become a starting point for the fightback against the disease. It is hoped that eventually there will be sufficient understanding of the disease pathology to facilitate a breeding programme. The susceptibility of continental ash trees to ash dieback may well be the result of a long history of selective breeding that has focused preferentially on form and vigour as these have been the fundamental components of good silvicultural practice. Ensuring there is sufficient genetic diversity in new ash strains to allow them to cope with changing ecosystems, whether as a result of climate change or the introduction and establishment of exotic pests and diseases, is essential. Form and vigour may be important to the nurseryman and

forester but ultimately ecological resilience should be the guiding light in any breeding programme. Fortunately the UK native ash population appears to have a more diverse genetic makeup than that in other parts of Europe, perhaps in part due to many ash woodlands being populated by self sets rather than planted nursery stock. The fact that ash reproduce almost entirely sexually and tend not to be self fertile, increases genetic diversity, something that is highly advantageous to the species. It may be that despite the anticipated losses, up to 30% of the total ash population shows varying degrees of tolerance to the disease. so there is hope that UK versions of trees ‘18’ and ‘35’ are out there. OFFSET WINCHING

SELECTING THE RIGHT

PULLEY

Dave Vickers says choosing the correct pulley is critical to the smooth running of rope and wire-based systems. Here he explains how to get it right

S

ince I started writing articles for ProArb, there has been a central theme – rope and wire-based systems in forestry and arboriculture. I’ve explored various factors affecting the forces involved, looked at rope and wire strength and where

the weaknesses in a system can be. However, there is one small component that is critical to the smooth running of these systems: the humble pulley. We have examined some of the forces pulleys can be subjected to and tried to ensure the correct selection of components to avoid overloading and catastrophic failure. However, there is another factor to consider with pulleys and that is the physical size of the pulley itself. The problem arises when a rope, or wire-rope, is bent around a pulley with a small diameter. How do you know what size pulley is best suited for your application? In mechanical terms, the answer is simple. Bigger

Page017_DaveVickers.indd 17

is definitely better. This has the practical disadvantage, however, of potentially carrying large and heavy pulleys when you could be using a smaller one to the same effect. The pulley needs to have a large enough diameter not to cause undue stress and wear on the wire or rope passing through it. The Forestry Commission published “Using Winches In Forestry” in 2004, in which it suggests that the pulley diameter should be a minimum of eight times the rope diameter, ideally 18 times. The bend ratio is the ratio of the diameter of the rope, and the diameter of the sheave around which the rope is laid, so a 12mm rope used with a sheave (pulley) with a diameter of 96mm is defined as having a bend ratio of 96/12, which is equal to eight. Samson Ropes also recommends a bend ratio of 8:1 for braided lines and 10:1 for twisted or plaited ropes in

its Rope Users Manual*. It should be noted that the sheave diameter is measured across the bottom of the groove, not the greater value of the supporting edge. Wire ropes such as those commonly used with Tirfor and Lugall winches also require a minimum bend ratio to ensure a long working life, otherwise individual wire strands are put under undue stress as they are bent around the sheave. Loos and Co (wire rope manufacturer) provides two bend ratios for its cables, a ‘desirable minimum’ and a ‘critical minimum’. Interestingly neither of those ratios are as low as the 8:1 given by the Forestry Commission (note that Samson Ropes refers to ropes rather than wire ropes). Loos and Co suggests a desirable minimum of 12:1 for ½in wire rope, but an added complication is that this minimum is dependent on the cable construction. Assuming the

best case scenario for my 1.6t Tirfor winch, which uses 11mm (7/16in) cable, I’d need to use a pulley sheave of at least 133mm (51/4in) to maintain a 12:1 bend radius. The shape of the groove is also important. It should be rounded with a profile no less than 10% greater than the rope diameter to avoid crushing the strands. Correctly sizing your pulley will extend the working life of your rope, or wire-rope. * Rope Users Manual available at www.samsonrope.com/Documents/ Rope_Users_Manual_WEB.pdf

P

owdery mildew is a foliar disease that occurs on a wide range of ornamental plants, shrubs and trees. This year it has been a common sight due to warm, humid conditions and it is most severe in late summer months. Rose, oak, hawthorn, lilac, sycamore, laurel and crabapple are among the species most commonly affected. Although it rarely causes permanent damage, the disease can cause premature defoliation, a weakened immune system and an unsightly powdery appearance. Symptoms Foliage, stems and flowers become covered with a white-to-grey powdery growth. Stunting and distortion of developing leaves and stems usually accompanies these symptoms. Leaves eventually become chlorotic and fall. Causal agents Approximately six genera of fungi cause powdery mildew on specific woody ornamentals. The fungi overwinter as mycelium in the bud or as spores on fallen leaves. Initial infections occur directly from the overwintering mycelium or windblown spores. Under favourable conditions, the fungus develops on the surface of host tissue producing a mat of white mycelium. It feeds by producing specialised peg-like projections called haustoria that

18 Pro Arb | October 2015

Page018_Bartlett.indd 18

puncture host cells and absorb their contents. Spores produced on the mycelium impart the powdery appearance to infected plant parts and are responsible for secondary infections. Control The incidence and severity of powdery mildew can be reduced through various cultural practices. Extremely susceptible species should be planted in at least partial sun and pruned periodically to increase air circulation. Fertilisation in the dormant season will prevent excessive late-summer growth, which is most susceptible to damage by powdery mildew. Good sanitation practices, including the removal of fallen infected leaf material, will reduce the amount of inoculum available the following year. Fungicide sprays will effectively control powdery mildew if applied at 2-3 week intervals from when infection is first observed. An interview with

WAYNE ELWELL MANAGING DIRECTOR OF

ABOUT…TREES Wayne Elwell of Kent-based tree surgery company About…Trees founded his company eight years ago as a retirement plan. Here he tells us about how he did it and why, and what he’s learnt along the way

How and when did you start your own company? I’ve been in the trade for 20 years and around eight years ago I started thinking about a strategy for when I’m too old to climb. I left my employer of the time, got a bank loan and went out on my own. The reason you started your own business was as a retirement plan? Yes, essentially. Or at least retirement from climbing. This type of work knocks your body, it’s hard work. Over the course of 20 years it takes its toll on you, I’ve picked up a few injuries. Did you study arboriculture at college? Yes, I attended Sparsholt College in Hampshire. I studied there for two years on a practical course that incorporated the theoretical side of things such as tree biology and species ID alongside the chainsaw use, climbing techniques and rescue courses.

Page019_Wayne Elwell About Trees interview.indd 19

Was the practical side more up your street? Initially it was. Before you start going down the management/consultancy route I think by rights you should have the practical knowledge and time on the tools under your belt. That way you can appreciate what it’s about and make sensible, practical decisions. So you set your business up eight years ago. What were the main costs? The major initial cost was the plant, getting hold of a chipper and a truck as well as the bare minimum saws and ropes. I would say the initial investment was a big hit. Did you buy new first off? We set ourselves up with brand new saws, ropes and harnesses but our chipper and truck were secondhand. Do you look at updating your kit regularly? The trucks just keep going until they get to a point where they either look unprofessional

Are you looking at growing your teams? I’ve got three great lads who really get on and they’ve fully bought into the way we do things. Three men can get through a staggering amount of work, so to get another team I’d have to be looking at more work or possibly something like a council contract.

or they cost too much money to repair. We replace stuff as and when and also when we see new gadgets that we like the look of. How many staff do you employ currently? There are four of us all together. How do you structure your workforce daily then? Do you still go out with the team? If we have a job that lasts for a couple of days I’ll get together with the lads in the morning, certainly on the first day, and walk around with them. I meet them in the yard in the morning, go through the risk assessment and suchlike. The risk assessments get sent to the cloud where the team can access them at any point to make sure they’re up to speed. If it’s a job where I think confusion could arise, for example a complicated job in a large garden or estate, I would go and join them and help out. Occasionally I’d jump in and meet them on-site. In the past I’ve made the mistake of just giving the lads job sheets at the beginning of the week and not paying a great deal of attention. You can’t get away with doing that, the team needs to see that you are interested in what they are doing.

20 Pro Arb | October 2015

Page019_Wayne Elwell About Trees interview.indd 20

How easy was it to find good quality staff? It’s easy to find people with the right qualifications and tickets. Finding decent people is a different thing altogether.

Do you think colleges are teaching what they should be? When I started 20 years ago there were only a handful of land-based colleges and universities. Now there seems to be a lot of youngsters taking these ten-week accelerated access courses. You walk in off the street, do a ten-week course and suddenly you are a qualified arborist. With any trade, people know this isn’t the case. I think they’re slightly mis-sold. Youngsters are told they can walk out of college with their full tickets and demand £160 a day as a sub-contractor.

Is regulation/legislation the reason for avoiding local authority work? Legislation is there, it’s inescapable and we work hard to be up to date and compliant. That’s not why we’ve stayed away from local authority. It’s because I’d rather not put pressure the lads to cover 500m of trees a day, so we take a more measured approach. So what is your profit split between commercial and domestic work? We have a few commercial clients but they are successful family owned businesses; we have a few national clients. Perhaps 70% of our work is domestic and 30% of our work is commercial. What issues have you faced this year in terms of running your business? This year the main thing has been the number of new crews setting up. It used to

Is experience is more important to you than just having the tickets? Experience is vital. We have three people on the tools – you need two really experienced people and that buys you the time to invest in somebody else in terms of training and giving them more time to perform a job. My view is that it takes a minimum of five years to become a proficient climber, after that we never stop learning. What sort of contracts do you go after? We have tended to stay away from local authority contracts. Ideally we try to attract high-end domestic work and privately owned estates. If we can get four or five days in an estate, that keeps everyone happy; the team climbs big trees and I have to look at less work!

FEATURES be that you would only ever see your own truck and chipper on the way to work, but now you see three or four other crews cruising around. I’m a little bit obstinate because I try not to enter into that ‘we will beat any quote’ thing. It’s a bit of a bugbear of mine and I think it cheapens the whole industry if we start putting in crazy prices. We’re trying to make the industry more professional. The guys are doing a dangerous job and they should probably be rewarded more financially because it’s hard work and for eight months of the year the weather is rubbish. I rely on our repeat customers understanding this and that’s what sees us through.

Managing Director

So your reputation will keep you on track? That’s what I’m hoping! What more can the industry do to make arboriculture a career of choice for young people? Over the last 10 years I think aboriculture has got higher on the radar as an industry that young lads want to get into and now we are seeing women wanting to be involved, which is a great thing. Back in the day there was only one trade magazine and that was the quarterly AA newsletter. Now we have a magazine like Pro Arb, I think it makes you feel like you are part of a decent industry. Trade shows are also important – it’s easy to become isolated when you work in a small area. Do you think the industry is shy on sharing knowledge? Not at all, I think the opposite. The industry is really open. In the last five or six years that has changed so much, especially when it comes to new climbing techniques such as the single rope technique (SRT) and double rope technique (DRT). Everyone wants to come up with a new technique and pass it on and that’s just incredible. I’m probably a bit too old and out of shape to do any SRT climbing but the lads who work for me, Phil and Joe the climbers, what they can do in a tree with SRT is incredible. They work together which is fantastic. The whole industry is open and inclusive.

UP IN THE AIR

Wayne uses the cloud to share risk assessments with his team. Here’s how he does it…

Combined risk assessment (RA) and job sheets are created and saved as PDFs on the office computer and About…trees’ Dropbox account prior to each job.

1

The RAs appear on the lads phones via Dropbox allowing them to work on the files. Wayne can attach site plans, maps, photos or council decision notices.

2

And what do you enjoy doing outside of work, what fills your spare time? I’m a massive music fan. I listen to a load of it and occasionally I try miserably to do a bit of DJing. I like photography but at heart I’m more than happy just being at home with the family.

The team can read the RA and equipment list and turn up to each job fully prepared. They can also attach before and after photos to the files.

BUSINESS TIPS

FOR BECOMING ARB APPROVED Nearly 40 years ago the Arboricultural Association established its Approved Contractor scheme to set the standard for tree work. The scheme offers a recognised benchmark for arboricultural contracting throughout the UK and Ireland and is increasingly required by local authorities and other large commercial organisations. Scheme manager Paul Smith shares his top ten tips for gaining Approved Contractor status

1

Find out what it takes for your company to become an approved contractor.

Approved Contractors are assessed based on three levels of company size, so check the website and download the information pack to find out about requirements and technical standards.

2

Find out more at an Arb Approved Contractor Preparation Workshop.

Come and find out anything you want to know about the scheme and how you can become approved and grow your business. By booking a free place on an AA Approved Contractor workshop and asking lots of questions, you’ll get to understand the requirements of the scheme and how to prepare for a successful assessment.

3 4

Review the standards and identify the gaps.

Once you’re familiar with the technical standards of the scheme, you can identify any areas that you need to work on in preparation for a successful assessment.

Ensure your training and skills are up to date. Make sure you and your staff are up to

date with the latest training standards. Keep training and qualifications on record and ensure that you have in place an effective system for assessing and implementing update and refresher training.

5

Present a ‘live’ worksite involving rigging. A key part of the approved contractor

assessment is the presentation of a live worksite. This is an opportunity to show that your company carries out its work to a high standard in worksite safety.

6

Present a range of high standards.

Show off your company’s skills and abilities in completing normal tree work operations. Reductions, thins and tree planting will be assessed.

7

Make sure your arboricultural knowledge is good and up to date. Managers’ technical arb

knowledge, experience and Continuing Professional Development will also be assessed. So make sure you’ve brushed up on your technical understanding and that your CPD log is up to date (templates can be found on trees.org.uk).

8

Plan the day carefully and prepare well in advance. The assessment is a thorough and

detailed procedure so your preparations should take this into account. Use the scheme standards document as a checklist to make sure you and your staff are fully prepared. Remember, this is a comprehensive assessment; everything down to customer care and office procedures is evaluated. Don’t forget about paperwork - make sure you’ve got everything you could need before your assessment date.

9

Refer to the help for arborists section of the website. A wealth of resources, from risk

assessment templates to inspection schedules and industry regulations are available. Become an AA member for access to technical officers’ advice and branches.

10

Prepare your team for the assessment. Use it as a goal for raising

and recognising standards across your organisation. Gaining Arb Approved Contractor status is an achievement that you and all your staff can take pride in.

You can sign up for a free ARB Approved Contractor Workshop in your area. Go to www.trees.org.uk/training for a list of dates and locations or register your interest at arbac@trees.org.uk. If you would like to talk in more detail with the scheme manager, please contact Paul Smith on paul@trees.org.uk or 01242 522 152. You can download a full breakdown of the scheme standards at www.trees.org.uk/become-an-ArbAC. Some small businesses may qualify for a free assessment.

RHYS WILLIAMS ULYETT LANDSCAPES LTD

Keen to highlight the great youngsters working their way up the ranks of our industry, this month Pro Arb speaks to Rhys Williams, an arboriculture apprentice at Ulyett Landscapes for new and existing clients. I started in March 2014 and using government funding Ulyett Landscapes was able to put me through my CS30 and 31 chainsaw qualifications, which I passed in December. This has meant I can carry out a broader range of work which has made my job much more interesting.

What is your full name, age and job title? My nameʼs Rhys Williams, Iʼm 20 years old and an arboriculture apprentice. What is your role within Ulyett Landscapes? I work under arboriculture manager Dave Frettsome, undertaking the company’s tree surgery and site clearance work

Why did you choose arboriculture as your profession? I like to be outdoors, working in a manual profession and I have a keen interest in trees. Are you looking to get any qualifications? I'm 95% complete on my NVQ2 Level 2 in Horticulture. Should be finished by the end of October. What's your favourite part of your current role? Working outdoors and visiting new sites each day.

FEATURES “I love being outdoors really and sculpting the trees to get them looking the best they can” What is your favourite piece of equipment to use and is the kit owned by you? The kit is all owned by Ulyett Landscapes but I love the chainsaw. Being qualified to use one has made my job much more varied. What are your future ambitions? I'd really like to progress within the company to foreman level, running my own jobs and supervising other team members.

Is there a structured development plan at Ulyett Landscapes for you? Yes, once I have passed my driving test and completed by apprenticeship I can work my way up through the ranks as Ulyett Landscapes have already offered me a full time permanent position. What is it you love about trees and tree work? I love being outdoors really and sculpting the trees to get them looking the best they can. What kind of work do you most enjoy doing? At the moment it's thinnings and reductions and stuff like that. Do you have an interest in the technical side of the industry? Not really, I love getting up the tree and doing the physical work!

What’s the worst thing about your job? The worst thing about my job is probably clearing up after I’ve made the mess! So what is your typical day? We clock in at 7am at the yard and we load up the van with the tools we will need for that day. We then head to the job that needs doing

for the day and my manager will take me on a look round of the job and let me know what needs doing, then I just get stuck in. We have a few breaks in between working and when the job is done, we always tidy up and leave the area in a good state before going back to the yard, dropping the gear off and heading home!

Jamie Saunders, MD of Trojan Tree Care offers his opinions on the items of kit he chooses to use on a day to day basis. Jamie, previous contributor to Pro Arb, has run his own business for 15 years and works on trees all across Kent and South East London

Chainsaw I have always used Stihl for all our saws, they are simply the best you can get. Two or three times over the years, I have been tempted to try Husqvarna and have always been disappointed, usually due to problems with the carburettor.

Stump grinder Our little Rayco is great for accessing rear gardens, being light enough to carry through a house if need be. We have a Carlton SP2010 for medium stumps and for the biggest stumps I hire in large machines as required.

Chipper I bought two of these Först ST6 chippers last year and so far so good, they are very aggressive and punch above their weight. We have had one or two little problems but Redwood has been pretty good at sorting them out. I also have a 6in track mounted Timberwolf which is great for woodland work. I’ve had all sorts over the years but the last machines before the Först were Jensen and Schleising, both of which were good. The only downside with all the Schleisings I have seen is rust.

Van I have had Isuzus since 2006 and we currently run two of these Isuzu NKRs. We also run a Transit but there is no comparison as the Isuzus pull like a train and the clutch and braking cope easily even when loaded and towing. The custom made bodies are by Tony Mitchell at Sussex body builders. I started off with an old LDV 200 and upgraded to various transits before getting my first Isuzu.

Chainsaw trousers I buy Stihl Hi-flex as they are hard wearing and comfortable to wear. They were the first of their type onto the market and although there are now other similar trousers around, I have never felt the need to change.

TS Industrie range

The TP 175 MOBILE from Danish producer Linddana now features a fold‐up funnel and a height‐adjustable ejector spout to improve the user experience and chipping flexibility even further. The chipping technology itself has not changed but the updated model will leave the user with operational advantages. Instead of the previous fixed funnel, the newly developed TP 175 MOBILE Vario Spout is equipped with a foldable funnel. The foldable funnel is wider and the more open design allows for better visibility of the feed roller area. The ejector spout can be set at different heights, making it easy to eject the wood chip into a truck or trailer.

TS Industrie offers an extensive range of high quality, multivegetation chippershredders that bring versatility, flexibility and efficiency to all your cutting and pruning activities. The professional chippers allow you to chip branches of an even larger diameter and are suitable for forestry use. The Wood Series chippers are equipped with cutting disc technology to shred branches of up to a diameter of 23cm (9in). TS Industrie machines are either mobile, custom designed on road trailers or fitted onto tractors with PTO. All machines comply with the most stringent safety standards. For a limited time only there are some great finance offers available.

A look at the latest products available Jo Beau B31-110 stump grinder The B31-110 Jo Beau stump grinder was designed along the same lines as the popular chipper range – it’s professional and compact. The grinder is versatile, has great manoeuvrability and no problem handling rough terrain. The machines come direct from Belgium and are fully CE compliant. It is also the only fully automatic grinder in this format. Being only 29in wide and weighing in at just 610kg, it’s ideal for transporting and access. It has a 31hp engine and is fitted with Greenteeth, which makes this a good all-round machine. Other nice features include the controls, which can be operated from left/right or rear. The cutter head assembly lifts up vertically for access and ease of maintenance. www.globalrecycling.eu

TreeJack by Reipal TreeJack is a tool for controlling the direction in which a tree falls. Designed and manufactured in Sweden it uses a robust gearbox and expanding strut to support and then push over a leaning tree. With six sizes to suit any woodland, it can be used on sloping ground or windblown trees. In situations where trees must fall away from roads, power lines or boundaries it creates a reassuring safe zone. The tool is used in conjunction with a normal gob and crosscut but with a wider than normal hinge, it supports the tree during cutting then winds it over for a safe fell. www.orionheating.co.uk

Gt Resibond Gt Resibond is an easy to install porous resin bonded surface layer of aggregate, suitable for the surrounds of trees within hard-landscaped areas. gt Resibond can be used in areas where conventional means of mulching with loose materials may not be practical, due to the constant displacement of the material increasing maintenance time and costs. Regarded in the industry as a resi-bound system, gt Resibond relies on the aggregate and the resin being agitated together in the mixer, and then spread over the prepared base with hand floats and trowels. Once laid and cured, gt Resibond is virtually maintenance free; it is durable and hard wearing, able to withstand pedestrian trafficking, wheelchairs and prams. www.green-tech.co.uk

Powered by a 25.4cc version of the Makita MM4, four-stroke engine developing 1.03hp, the EY2650H25H weighs just 7.2kg, is comfortable to use and is supplied complete with shoulder strap harness, safety goggles and engine and chain oil.

The Cellweb Tree Root Protection System provides a flexible and permeable solution for protecting tree roots while offering a robust and stable platform from which to create vehicular access paths. Cellweb TRP has a unique cellular structure and perforated cell walls which reduces the vertical load pressure on sub soils to tree roots, therefore preventing damage. With clean granular materials as infill, air and moisture can reach the roots to encourage healthy prolonged growth. With no-dig solutions being the preferred option, Cellweb TRP is ideal as only the surface vegetation need be removed. As well as avoiding disruption to the roots, this reduces construction times and costs. www.geosyn.co.uk

Each month we feature an ancient British tree. This month the Ancient Tree Forum introduces us to the...

The Royal Oak at Boscobel House, Shropshire The branches of the original Royal Oak at Boscobel House were famously used by King Charles II as an overnight hideaway after a heavy defeat in the final battle of the English civil war in 1651. The king’s popularity later saw the tree gain legendary status. The oak you can visit today, estimated as at least 250 years old, is really the daughter of the Royal Oak as it seeded within the walls round the site of the older tree, which was plundered and destroyed by souvenir hunters. The Royal Oak sits within the grounds of Boscobel House, a timber framed hunting lodge in Shropshire, now under the care of English Heritage. In the summer of 2001 the tree was struck by lightning and a substantial section of the crown tore away and fell. The upper trunk was damaged, causing the death of the south-facing side of the main stem and part of the root system. Further storm damage occurred in 2010, leading to concerns about the tree’s health and the safety of visitors. Neville Fay, principal consultant at Treework Environmental Practice and trustee of the Ancient Tree Forum, has been overseeing Conservation Arboriculture’s measures to improve the health, vitality and stability of the

tree for the past four years. He said: “The crown rejuvenation programme involves using specialist pruning to reduce weight on selected branches while stimulating new growth in the lower crown. “The hollow trunk had already been braced and subsequent detailed investigation found that installing structural prop supports would be likely to

increase the risk of further trunk fracture. “The rooting environment has been improved by using woodchip mulch and treating the soil and crown with compost tea. What is particularly important here is seeing the tree, its roots and the soil as integral, through maintaining a healthy canopy and managing the ground conditions around the tree.” Future generations of the Boscobel oak are being established by managing young oaks regenerated from the aged parent. In this way it is hoped that the history of the monumental Royal Oak will be ensured. The Ancient Tree Forum champions the biological, cultural and heritage value of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees, and provides advice on their value and management at www.ancienttreeforum.co.uk.
