ust minutes away from the restaurants of Chelsea and Knightsbridge, the Chelsea Creek development enjoys a peaceful dockside location on the north bank of the River Thames. This feeling of tranquillity is evident throughout the development. The outdoor space is breathtaking – especially the works to the 25th floor roof garden, which has panoramic views across London. The roof gardens demonstrate a whole new dimension of outdoor living, with water features, al fresco kitchens, fireplaces, mature planting, separate areas for dining and relaxing, and sun rooms. The client’s brief was for the installation of all external areas around the housing blocks in multiple phased handovers, with work carried out to the highest standard. The areas of construction included four penthouse roof

gardens and the ground floor external footprint, as detailed on the design plans. Design and build St George Developments contracted Elite Landscapes Ltd to undertake the hard and soft landscaping of the development. The works were predominantly hard landscaping, including the design and development of the granite paving, the step formation, a stoneclad planter and seat formation, the main entrance water feature, the courtyard water feature, the roof garden’s drainage, insulation and void infill, surface drainage, irrigation, and the ongoing aftercare maintenance. Elite Landscapes also carried out the supply and caballing of all lighting, the coordination of groundworks and lighting, the supply and installation of the canal bridge,

including light rods, the supply and installation of a hot tub for the 25th floor penthouse garden, the installation of soft landscaping to the penthouses and ground floor planting, the provision and fitting of bespoke pergolas, sculptures and other structures, the provision and build of the outdoor kitchen areas and fireplaces, and the sourcing and planting of green walling and mature trees, the latter sourced from the Netherlands. One of Chelsea Creek’s most striking features is undoubtedly its unique pedestrian bridge; it is a sculptural element in its own right, offering stunning views across the canal and providing local residents with a quieter route through the stylish waterside development. The bridge – which uses up-lit acrylic rods as balustrades – was brought together by Elite Landscapes, which oversaw and directed the seven different companies involved in its construction. Each had built an aspect of the bridge that the site team then had to coordinate and assemble, a process that involved 1 Pedestrian bridge 2T ower penthouse planting 3L iving wall 4R ings of Saturn sculpture 5 Tower penthouse hot tub 6 Canal gardens bespoke benches

looking through individual design aspects and ensuring all components for the construction worked coherently with one another. Works took place while the canal was full of water, which meant that Elite Landscapes had to hire a specialist to construct a pontoon in order for the team to be able to access the bridge and fit the rods. The bridge, which is around 24m in length, was constructed from curved steel beams, acrylic rod balustrades, and timber handrails and decking. Each rod is lit by a separate light fitting at the base, which needed to be hand-positioned and wired individually. Only four rods on the bridge are the same, meaning there are 78 different lighting variations – giving the lights their ‘rainfall’ effect. The clever use of materials and lighting in the structure make it a standout feature both day and night, with the balustrades glinting in the sun by day, and the bridge really coming to life after dark as its shimmering lights glisten in the water below. Sourcing materials With the scheme comprising so many different elements – particularly the penthouse roof gardens – sourcing and procurement was always going to be a complex procedure. Elite 10

Landscapes worked through each item to ensure they met the client’s expectations, using both new and existing suppliers. Especially complicated items included those involved in the canal bridge. Carefully managed coordination between the the manufacturers of the bridge, the acrylic rods and the lighting was crucial in ensuring that all components arrived at the designated time, for a seamless installation of the complete item. The outdoor kitchens also required meticulous planning and consideration, with such a large number of components making up the finished pieces. Challenges All works were completed to a fixed deadline and geared towards programmed completions for the housing handovers, with extreme pressure to deliver the externals for the opening of each development block. The scheme also presented a number of logistical challenges, with the creation of the upper terraces proving particularly difficult. To complete the works for the penthouse gardens, all materials had to be craned up to the ninth, 10th and 24th floors in individual dumpy bags or pallets.

YOUR GARDEN DESIGN Sleek structures and a restrained colour scheme create the perfect garden for a contemporary home

P

elorus is a detached private residence of timber frame construction, with attractive wooden clad elevations set upon a brick/masonry foundation. The house frontage faces east, with the rear elevation facing west. The owners wanted a modern garden that was consistent with the style of the house and would complement its sleek, contemporary interior. The brief included several spaces for entertaining to accommodate six to eight people and a barbecue/pizza oven in proximity to the house. Enhancing the privacy of the rear garden was a must. Where possible, the entertainment areas needed to avoid being overlooked by neighbouring properties, and be sheltered from prevailing winds to maximise usability. The brief also specified a limited amount of lawn area, and planting that would both complement the house’s interior décor and offer year-round interest. Further considerations included a pergola or other raised structure, along with contemporary screening to the boundaries of the property and strategic focal points when viewing the garden from different rooms within the house. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 13

Design To achieve a look that was consistent with the house, Your Garden Design utilised materials that were sympathetic to both the interior and exterior of the property. Through clever use of materials, colour and form, the interior décor was taken outside to produce a clean and uncluttered look.

Spaces for entertaining guests were provided in multiple locations around the garden to make the most of the sun at different times of day, and a barbecue/outdoor pizza oven was located outside a sleek garden pavilion with an overflying roof, providing shelter and shade and extending the usable season of the garden.

The pavilion was designed to give a striking silhouette, while remaining under 2.4m in height, as dictated by planning. The L-shaped interior opens out by means of sliding doors onto a shaded deck, giving the owners somewhere cool to relax during hot weather, and the exterior was finished with cladding selected to mirror that of the house. The reflective work surfaces and clean lines used inside the property were also repeated in the glass of the pavilion doors, as well as in the sharp lines of the paving, fencing and pavilion cladding. A heavy oak pergola lends solidity to the centre of the design, standing on its own against the stark outline of the pavilion and reflecting the clients’ love of natural timbers. Slate stepping

stones beneath the pergola contrast against dove grey pebbles, with the strong lines of the structure directing the eye down its length to a charming feature seat at the end. The small lawn area was balanced with spaces of hard and softscape across different levels. This takes a circuitous route around the garden to provide a visual journey through the space, while seamlessly connecting the house to the garden and pavilion. Existing paving was integrated into this scheme, and designed changes in hardscape between levels added further interest. The palette of timber and stone was selected to reflect that of the structure of the property, with certain elements repeated througout the design, such as the bricks used on the house, and slate from the roof – mirrored in the stepping stones under the pergola. Planting was carefully chosen to deliver structure and form while softening the view, with the colour scheme echoing the property’s interior; this approach provided further continuity between the house and garden, and a feeling of increased space. Plants were also selected for their contrasting textures and colour, to deliver a long season of interest; as days shorten, seed heads and foliage will replace flowers, with hedging and clipped elements such as yew spheres defining the space. Feature plants include a trio of quarter standard olive trees in slate grey Urbis planters that reflect the colour of the windows and the slate roof, offering a sympathetic focal point and additional screening from the neighbouring property. Garden lighting was used to highlight focal points while also subtly illuminating access routes to key areas, such as the pavilion. Features such as the birch trees were accented with light, their white stems up-lit to contrast against densely planted, shade-tolerant grasses, ferns and groundcover perennials below. Challenges Although the garden was relatively sheltered, its close proximity to the sea meant that plants needed to be tolerant of high light levels and salt-laden winds. Planting was carefully selected to meet these challenges, and included species such as Pinus mugo ‘Humpy’ – its evergreen, coastal tolerant foliage was not only ideal for the location, but also contrasted beautifully against 14

DURING the simple form of the Axis 55 planters from Urbis, into which it was installed. The garden was heavily overlooked by neighbouring properties with no desired focal points beyond the boundaries, which consisted of standard close-board fencing in differing materials and heights – an unsightly backdrop. To overcome this, contemporary cedar screening was added to the boundaries, providing a clean canvas for the planting. The strong horizontal lines of the cedar fencing also helped to draw the eye towards the pavilion and around the perimeter, giving an increased sense of width to the space.

he project was part of a complete property overhaul, with the residence having been previously unoccupied for some time. The client was keen to bring the house up to date, both inside and out. Their brief was to create a clean, maintenancefree garden with multiple seating areas and plenty of lawn for their two dogs. The rest they left completely up to the designer, as the customer had seen their previous work and trusted them to come up with something they liked. Design and build Stonecraft designed a garden with a fresh, modern feel, incorporating several seating areas, as requested by the clients. A central area for entertaining was created at the bottom of the garden, complete with integral seating, a water feature and a gas fire pit to extend the use and comfort of the space. From here, a path was constructed through the centre of the garden and up to the back of the house, lined by rows of artificial bay trees to impart a sense of grandeur while remaining low-maintenance as per the client’s brief. Artificial grass, on which the dogs could play, was added to either side of this path. At the back of the house, Stonecraft built a large patio for dining and entertaining, featuring a further two identical seating areas either side and a six-foot wall to afford the space some privacy from neighbouring properties. A new fence was built around the entire perimeter of the garden, and substantial lighting installed. This included up-lighting along the sides of the path to illuminate both the way to the house and the artificial bay trees, spotlights in the raised planters to throw light on the artificial plants within them, and wall lights on the back of the house and the sides of the raised planters.

Shortlisted for Marshalls Awards 2018

Materials As a Marshalls Registered Installer, Stonecraft used entirely Marshalls products for the garden’s transformation. The paths and patios were created using a blend of Marshalls’ SYMPHONY Vitrified and Granite Eclipse ranges, while the Drivesys cobble range was used to create the entertaining area at the bottom of the garden and the stoneface wall cladding on the feature walls. All other products were sourced from Stonecraft’s local builders merchants, Builders 16

Supplies (West Coast) Ltd in Fleetwood. Materials were carefully selected to complement the sleek, modern style and colours of the house itself, so that the garden feels like a true ‘outdoor room’. Challenges The major challenge was the fact that the team were unable to get a dumper into the garden. This was due to other works taking place in the house and the resulting scaffolding, which blocked access. Consequently, 100t of earth had to be moved out of the garden, and 100t shifted in, all by wheelbarrow.

Environmental responsibility With a focus on using renewable energy and producing less disruption to park users, 50% of the team’s on-site equipment is powered with rechargeable batteries, including electric utility vehicles and Stihl tools such as hedge cutters, blowers and strimmers. All green waste from site operations is recycled in mulching bays. Woody waste from pruning is shredded and used for the boundary path, while compost produced on-site is blended as a 50/50 mix with coffee grounds and used to mulch tree circles and shrub borders. This practice is a move away from the pine mini mulch previously used. The park also has a wormery for on-site food recycling. The Nurture team collects around 50kg of food waste and coffee grounds each day, which is put through the macerator and fed to the worms. The resulting vermicompost is used for shrub borders and trees. There are also two apiaries, supplied, set up and maintained by the site team with support from its in-house master beekeeper. Installed to support local biodiversity, excess honey is harvested each autumn and distributed to guests at the park. As well as managing a number of environmental initiatives at the park, Nurture Landscapes provides monthly innovation

ideas. Several have been implemented, including solar charging and a new watering system. Seasonal support Additional seasonal activities performed by the team include putting out deck chairs and a chess board each day during the summer months, and Christmas installations over the festive period, involving internal trees for each building and lighting for 30 external trees. In winter, gritting and snow clearance are led by Nurture Landscapes, assisted by partner companies when required. Development Working closely with the client, Nurture Landscapes continues to carry out an annual programme of improvements and lifecycle landscaping works that maintain and enhance the stunning site – guaranteeing all at Chiswick Park a location in which they can truly ‘Enjoy-Work’.

GRAND DESIGNS LIVING LANDSCAPES Elegant paving, eye-catching centrepieces and a lush, sprawling lawn combine to transform this large garden in Surrey

F

ollowing an extensive refurbishment of the property, including the construction of two new extensions, Living Landscapes was invited to completely transform the outdoor space, landscaping both the front and rear gardens. Having already managed the redevelopment of the property, the owner had a very clear vision for his new garden. Design and build To the front of the residence, access points from the road were created via brick entrances, featuring two new gates with a motorised system. Leading into a central gravelled driveway, where parking was available for the family’s cars, a large circular water feature was introduced as a focal point, while still allowing ample space for vehicles to drive in and out. The front garden was mainly laid to lawn with a few trees, and to the rear of the property, large paved areas were required to tie in the newly constructed barn conversion, again with key focal points. Despite the considerable size of the project, construction of the garden was relatively simple. However, with all the work undertaken at the property prior to Living Landscape’s arrival, there was a lot to do in terms of preparation – particularly to the

soft landscaped areas. Severe ground compaction and poor quality soil was a problem that had to be overcome before the project could really move forward. Setting out was a key issue for the client, and regular meetings were held to discuss how certain finishes might be achieved. Around the pool house, porcelain tiles – which had to be laid on a concrete base – were selected to match those used internally. Living Landscapes created various pathways to connect locations within the garden, journeying past the pool to the sunken garden and along the rear of the house to the large patio and seating area. in with the property, with beds and planting enveloping the hard landscaping. As the driveway was substantial, a gravel stabilisation system was used to allow for free draining of surface water while also provide longevity to the style of the driveway. Special requirements Ground preparation was key to this project, and essential prior to any laying or planting work. It was clear that the ground was severely compacted from all the heavy machinery involved in the property’s refurbishment, so rotavation was carried out and additional aggregate brought in to help with future

drainage of the beds. It was also important that all deliveries and works were carefully managed, to allow for access to various parts of the garden at required times. A particularly delicate and tricky operation involved the water feature which, at more than a ton in weight, had to be gently transported to the rear garden across extremely rough terrain.

Materials Materials were thoughtfully selected to complement the style of the refurbished property. A mix of Victorian Brown paving, from Silverland Stone, and porcelain paving, supplied by Domus, was used for paths and patios, while Millboard decking was installed for the wood pathways, which were located in shady areas of the garden where weathering and slipping were potential hazards. Gravel was supplied by CED, as well as the Cedec gravel stabilisation system, and water features from Tristan Cockerill created striking focal points. The garden was completed with an irrigation system from LWS, high-quality Rolawn Medallion turf, supplied by The London Lawn Turf Company, and lighting installed by Mike Shackleton of Ornamental Garden Lighting.

NATURAL CHARM JARMANMURPHY jarmanmurphy redesigned the driveway of this contemporary property with naturalistic woodland planting

he client brief was to improve a large area to the side and front of the property, creating planting schemes for new driveway areas, banks, borders, and beds in front of the house. This redesign was to be balanced with the need for screening, creating privacy from adjacent properties using carefully selected evergreens and strategically placed trees. The front of the house needed to be given greater prominence, with a more interesting entrance adjacent to the new parking area. Planting had to be low maintenance and seasonally interesting, but also soft and sympathetic to the existing mature trees and native shrubs that were already growing on site and in the surrounding locality. Project background Set back from a small village in Hertfordshire and accessed along a private road, the property is an attractive, detached, architect-designed residence. Oak had been used for new features within the house, which has a traditional yet contemporary feel. The clients were originally looking to redesign the planting in a central circular bed and alongside the drive. However, during the initial site visit, the designers felt that the house and its grounds were overshadowed by a large 40m-long Leylandii hedge that ran along the boundary. At 5m tall, it blocked light to neighbouring properties and created a dense, dark backdrop to the house that limited Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 27

MARCH PORTFOLIO 2018

planting options, and it was rapidly becoming unruly as it grew older. After discussing the site analysis with the clients, it was agreed to develop a design that included the removal of the Leylandii and old shrubbery, and to redesign the shape and planting of the whole area to create a modern woodland. Encompassing a range of heights and textures and featuring both evergreen and deciduous trees, the woodland would maintain privacy but also bring light and movement to a previously dark and neglected driveway and parking area. The revised design would also include a retaining structure alongside the raised banks, accommodating a wider driveway and thus allowing for more generous access to the property. jarmanmurphy was keen to make the property feel a part of the woodland landscape, but with a raised intensity of planting and year-round interest, including bulbs, grasses and seed heads. Special requirements The client, understandably, did not want to lose any of their privacy, so, after designing the treescape, the designers headed out on site

armed with a long pole to match and check the height of the trees. jarmanmurphy spent the morning visiting different rooms in the house with the owner, taking turns to stand outside and hold the pole up in different locations to ensure that the new planting design concealed neighbouring properties and their windows were concealed. This reassured the client, and allowed the designers to check their tree design in detail before ordering. Design and build jarmanmurphy focused the design on a contemporary, curving rendered wall, which echoed a surface that had been used elsewhere in the garden. The wall was to run along the length of the drive and diminish in height so that it would feel as if it was subtly disappearing into the landscape. The front of the property was paved with reclaimed York paving inset with granite setts, creating a simple repetition of lines and breaking up the visual appearance of a large hardstanding area for cars. A large, sweeping curved bed ran on from the raised banks; it was planted with a range of trees to create a staggered, naturalistic treescape and screen neighbouring windows and properties. An annexe in the corner of the site was given a cottage feel with a narrow winding path that cut through the planting and

trees. The clients used their own local landscaper and his team to undertake the works. Challenges As new garden designers, jarmanmurphy had to build up relationships with suppliers and contractors. Being able to work alongside trusted and reliable professionals is vital, and as this was their first joint project, they worked hard to communicate and develop good relationships with everyone involved. Sourcing materials The reclaimed Yorkstone had already been sourced, so the designers worked with the material to create a subtle but interesting paving option, with the introduction of setts as a feature. A large gravel driveway was reinstated, and this, too, was

edged with granite setts, ensuring continuity of detail. The main focus was to be on the planting and trees, with traditional hard landscaping materials used in an understated, current style. jarmanmurphy worked closely with Deepdale Trees to source the correct heights and sizes for the trees. The nursery gave advice and support to enable the designers to create the desired woodland feel while meeting the client’s requirements. The plan featured three types of holly to offer different screening options: the

standard Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’, the feathered Ilex x aquipernyi ‘Dragon Lady’, and the smaller, shrubby Ilex aquifolium ‘Alaska’. These were massed together to create colonies. Where semi-mature trees such as Amelanchiers were planted, jarmanmurphy added younger, smaller saplings to create the feel of a natural landscape. The garden’s herbaceous plants were sourced from Orchard Dene. A mix of native plants and cultivars created an enhanced naturalistic planting scheme.

Astrantia ‘Hadspen Blood’. Splashes of late summer vibrancy are found in clumps of Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ and Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’. The borders closest to the house are underplanted with a wave of white scented Narcissus ‘Thalia’ and the ever popular and cost effective Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ (still a real people pleaser). Tulip Purple Blend are planted intensively and refreshed annually, supplying a hit of colour. In this way, spring interest is increased in those parts of the garden most readily seen from indoors at a time of year when biting winds still blow. Standard Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’ lollipops and Buxus sempervirens spheres add essential height and architectural elements. Carpinus betulus hedging around the sunken patio area brings in a touch of formality, while Stipa tenuissima (refreshed from gathered seed biannually) helps soften the garden’s straight edges. The movement of wind through the trees continues in the planting of evergreen Stipa gigantea in the lower beds. Like the soothing sounds from the water feature, the rustling grasses are an extra sensory element that render the sunken seating area a fantastic spot in which to unwind.

t was vital that a new garden at Bay Tree Farm reflect the sophisticated renovation of its ancient farmhouse. The team at Bestall & Co knew that the design had to be modern, yet sympathetic to the look of this imposing property. It also had to sit well in its vantage point above the breathtaking scenery beyond. This southwest-facing space was redesigned and rebuilt over three phases. Bestall & Co decided very early on to create a cultured contemporary garden. The team developed clean lines composed of resilient new sawn and honed Yorkstone, combined with reused old riven stone slabs from the original patio, echoing the renewed strength of the building. On the other hand, use of Cedar cladding and Iroko decking evoke the spirit of the surrounding woodlands with their warm timber hues. The grey and black tones of the stylish outdoor furniture, the framework of the Hartley Botanic greenhouse and the slate of the spherical James Parker water feature add a hit of modernity. So too does the inclusion of a bronze-effect sculptural piece as a focal point to the southeast of the garden.

You receive a warm welcome as you descend to the side of the fire pit, elegant in its simplicity. In a similar vein, the elements of the second phase – the pool, Cedar hot tub and custom outdoor kitchen – were strategically positioned for their proximity to the home and indoor spa and entertaining area. Phase three of the implimentation further developed a sense of practicality. The stately

greenhouse was erected in this stage allowing the owners to germinate vegetable seeds, which can then be hardened off outside in the adjacent coldframes. There are raised vegetable beds, a small orchard and an ericaceous raised border for blueberry cultivation, a bed which was expensive to create but has paid off well, producing superfruits for many months. Despite its outstanding beauty, this remains a functional family garden. With help, it’s become the perfect place to relax, entertain and nourish body and soul. “We’ve worked closely with the owners of this beautiful farmhouse over the past couple of years to create a productive family garden, and it was such an honour to use this project to help us win the Northern Design Awards for best residential garden in 2017.” – Lee Bestall

he client sought a stylish and modern garden with visual impact to reflect the interior design of their newly built detached home, which had been built using local sandstone from Johnsons Wellfield quarry. They required a low-maintenance space and increased privacy, since the property is situated on a hill and is overlooked by a number of neighbouring properties. They also wanted an area for entertaining their large family and circle of friends, which would double as a place for their children to play.

The design To visually connect the property with the garden, JB Landscapes designer John Brennan used the same beautiful warm beige sandstone that the house had been constructed from for the gabion walls and paving. The contrasting slate grey tiled roof and dark window frames were also reflected in

CHECK MATE JB LANDSCAPES LTD An ambitious series of gabion walls helps transform this new build in Dewsbury

John’s use of 14mm black basalt chippings, applied alongside the cream-coloured paving. On the path leading to the wide and impressive front doorway, light-coloured pavers were staggered in a way that draws the eye in, with basalt gravel used in negative spaces to produce a series of sleek, straight lines that echos those of the modern house. To the left of the front door, and in front of the client’s large picture window, the pavers and basalt gravel have been arranged in a checkered pattern to create a pathway with visual impact. This leads on to a small sitting area covered by a simple, contemporary green oak pergola, its grey weathered timbers blending easily with the colour scheme. At the back of the house, the deck for entertaining and relaxation has been constructed using ecodek, a completely recycled material that is sturdy enough to

withstand all elements. The glass balustrade surround means that the raised deck is safe, without obstructing the view. The gabion walls Some walls were freestanding and some retaining, and to build them from traditional masonry would have been prohibitively expensive. As the owners wanted a modern look anyway, the decision was made to use gabions filled with local stone. JB Landscapes decided to use them for the entire boundary: this structure would act as a retaining wall in places, provide the privacy that the owners required, and also be a stunning architectural feature in itself. With a total length of 83m and plunging 3m below ground level at the retaining side, the construction was a test of stamina and skill for the JB Landscapes team. In the end, JB Landscapes used over www.prolandscapermagazine.com

100 baskets and more than 300t of stone to complete the project. In the past, gabion walls have been a longstanding feature of motorways, and when used in gardens and landscaping they have often come with the risk of uneven stones and poor structure. For this project, JB Landscapes decided to break the mould. Unlike other gabion structures, where stones are placed randomly, the team aligned the stones in a more precise, interlocking form, improving the aesthetic and ensuring perfect structural integrity. 1 Chequered paving provides drama 2 Front entrance to the property 3 Stepped gabion wall separates the drive 4 Low, wide sleeper steps with artificial lawn 5 Large composite deck with glass balustrade 6 Modern oak pergola adds height and structure

John also had the innovative idea of planting within a section of the gabion wall itself. This meant that the hedge running along the eastern boundary would continue in an unbroken line, making the back garden a greener and more integrated space, and providing a greater degree of privacy. Challenges JB Landscapes encountered several challenges, including the placement of manhole covers that had been incorrectly installed on the boundary of the property – right in the line of the gabion wall. To overcome this, the team used stone lintels within the wall to act as small bridges wherever there was a manhole cover, creating an attractive solution to a difficult problem. As the house was a new build, it had actually been constructed before the completion of the adjoining road. This meant that JB Landscapes had to build the garden wall next to a road that didn’t yet exist, taking levels from the house. In addition to this, the project took a total of 15 weeks, right through the middle of a cold and very wet winter, making conditions extremely muddy and difficult. Despite the challenges, the team has created a stunning and stylish modern garden that echoes the character of the client’s house. Surrounded by a magnificent feature gabion wall, the landscaping design and choice of natural materials are tasteful, but also deliver impact. Fulfilling the client’s brief, the structural, minimal planting, composite decking and artificial lawn are both attractive and low maintenance, while the use of high-quality materials and beautifully finished features helps to create a garden that will continue to look good for many years to come.

The waterfront area around the structure has been redeveloped to be fully accessible and includes public art, a café and outdoor seating, all within a landscaped setting. Total Protection Landscaping Ltd was contracted to supply and install all aspects of hard

and soft landscaping to external areas of the Mount Anvil Dollar Bay project. Remedial works Prior to commencing, Total Protection was required to carry out remedial works to the area. This included the riverside walkway’s original block paving, reducing the level of certain areas by digging out and removing material, and backfilling low-level sections to bring the site to the correct formation level. Hard landscaping Granite was the primary paving used for the hard landscaped areas, including feature banding and kerbs, as well as cladding for concrete walls, copings and steps. The brief also included the installation of play equipment, creating three distinct Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 37

zones: a 15m2 toddler play area incorporating timber blocks to promote exercise, balance, climbing, coordination and jumping; a 27m2 space for table tennis, encouraging physical activity and movement; and an area for children aged between 0-12 years, covering 92m2 of tilted lawn and play mounds for clambering, running and exploring. This final play location included a series of eye-catching, bright orange rubber safety surface mounds, containing a lightweight fill for build-up and a stainless steel retaining edge. Seating was provided via solid timber benches, picnic tables and striking wooden pergola structures, with steel railings and handrails, fencing and cycle racks fitted throughout the site for privacy and security. Some areas were also outfitted with contemporary stainless steel demarcation studs and stainless steel corduroy inset strips. To enable sufficient drainage, slot drains and access chambers were installed, which were then linked to the nearest manholes. To complete the project, the Total Protection team incorporated feature lighting to assist with safety and provide an appealing aesthetic effect, and also fitted lighting protection boxes. Soft landscaping Soft landscaping works included the supply and installation of lawn, trees and a selection of other plants and hedges around the site. The trees required underground guying/anchor systems, washed sand to the tree pits and aeration/ irrigation pipes, with Total Protection also responsible for importing subsoil, topsoil and mulch for specific areas. As part of the planning conditions, bird and bat boxes were supplied and 38

fitted by the team, as well as a living green wall to the sides of the ancillary building. Challenges Unique to the client’s brief and needs, the whole play area was particularly unusual in design and incorporated a number of different elements, such as the timber block play equipment and grass/rubber crumb mounds. Works needed to be planned around key dates for public access, which Total Protection had to keep to for the client. With only a single entrance, and a body of water running along one side, the size and location of the site also proved challenging, and with no storage space available at Dollar Bay, all equipment had to be kept off-site and brought on for use daily. Despite these challenges, Total Protection has successfully delivered a unique, social play space filled with a host of interesting features, and installed by a professional and experienced team.

BIRD’S-EYE VIEW LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATES LTD Landscape Associates Ltd refreshed this urban garden in Teddington with an emphasis on biodiversity and in particular attracting wild birds

D

uring the initial site visit, the team from Landscape Associates Ltd was struck by the abundance of wild birds in this small urban garden, largely due to its proximity to Bushy Park. The garden demonstrated a high level of biodiversity, and so the team’s primary objective was to maintain and enhance this within its design. The existing borders featured several plants that held winter form, such as Rudbeckia, Symphyotrichum and Hydrangea quercifolia, and it was obvious from subsequent site visits that additional species of this variety should be introduced to further encourage biodiversity. With plans to extend the property, the owner initially instructed Landscape Associates to leave the area adjacent to the house as it was. However, the client later decided not to pursue these plans, and the team was invited to redesign the space in a second phase of works. Fortunately, this had little impact on the first phase, other than some replanting.

Design and build When producing concepts for Phase 1, Landscape Associates focused on creating areas to encourage wildlife through the introduction of new plants, while also retaining many of the garden’s nature-rich existing trees and shrubs. In addition to devising a wildlife-friendly planting scheme, the team spent time sourcing a suitable water feature that could be used by the birds, as well as providing sound and

movement for the clients to enjoy. Phase 1 featured a limited palette of materials, including the existing Indian sandstone, which Landscape Associates matched due to budget restraints. The team also introduced a brick paver for the circular patio area towards the rear of the garden, choosing a product they felt complemented the existing brick boundary wall that was located close by. The scheme was completed with exterior lighting to highlight and showcase elements of the design; however, shortly after installation there were incidents of squirrels chewing through some of the electrical cables. As a result, the team specified that twin-walled cable ducting should be used during Phase 2, enclosing all exposed wires and helping to prevent any further incidents. The next phase of the project involved removing the original softwood pergola and decking, redesigning the space and building a new pergola from FSC-certified Iroko hardwood, chosen for its durability and its colour after ageing. The garden’s beautiful white Wisteria – a standout feature of the original garden – had unfortunately overgrown the existing structure, and the pergola’s softwood frame was also beginning to rot under its weight.

This Wisteria had long provided a safe habitat for a host of small birds, and was also the client’s favourite element, so it was imperative to preserve and incorporate it into the new design. Landscape Associates carefully removed the existing timber frame and, while supporting the Wisteria, built the new hardwood construction around it. With slatted screens below to create an intimate space for entertaining guests, the new solid structure also provided ample support for the weighty climber. A great success, it flowered the following season despite heavy pruning and the disruption from the build. Now draped with pendulous racemes of snowy white flowers, the completed Iroko pergola acts as a stunning centrepiece for the garden and has already started to weather nicely.

FINE DINING FARLAM & CHANDLER A Tunbridge Wells eaterie gains a versatile and intimate outdoor dining space that is sympathetic to its surrounding landscape

T

he Beacon was formerly an early 18th-century pleasure and tea garden, nestled in a 17-acre wooded valley that includes three beautiful lakes. Turned into a hotel in 1950, it had become tired and was in need of a new lease of life when current owner Pete Cornwell, of Kent-based restaurant group I’ll Be Mother, took over in 2014. With The Beacon lovingly renovated to create a country pub with an elegant, modern British restaurant, the garden needed to reflect and embody this new character. Brief Farlam & Chandler was invited to redesign the garden and terrace in 2014. The brief was to reconnect diners with the environment, the origins of their food and the beautiful views and surrounding countryside, translating the ethos of the I’ll Be Mother family. Using only local designers, specialists and tradespeople, as well as locally sourced materials wherever possible, the new terrace was to offer outdoor dining space as an extension to the indoor restaurant, reflecting the style and spirit of the kitchen. Design and build Farlam & Chandler worked closely with the restaurant’s interior designers, SGS Architectural Interiors, to craft a modern yet rustic dining experience from the inside out. Three connecting dining spaces were created, 44

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 44

each with their own identity and ambience: a flexible and sociable area on the main deck, constructed with Kebony timber and overlooking the lakes and countryside beyond; a more intimate lower decked terrace, sitting beneath an iconic pergola whose timber structure mirrors the I’ll Be Mother logo and frames views of the Weald; and a secluded paved area, tucked beneath a canopy of mature grapevines to provide a cool, relaxed space. The three terraces are dressed with informal pots and reclaimed sinks filled with scented herbs, and the areas are unified by the concept of productivity and sharing. Sourcing materials A fundamental part of the brief was that all materials were to be sourced as locally and sustainably as possible. Naturally occurring sandstone was gathered from the grounds and repurposed for the garden walls, echoing the magnificent sandstone outcrops that characterise the Tunbridge Wells landscape. With budget in mind, existing paving and bricks were also lifted and relayed for some areas, while Kebony timber – a fully sustainable and highly durable wood that requires little maintenance beyond normal cleaning – was selected for the main deck.

Special requirements It was important that the terrace could be used year-round, in all weathers and for all occasions: weddings, parties, intimate suppers. Its south-facing, exposed aspect meant that shade and shelter was essential, so large parasols and bespoke pergolas became an integral part of the design, offering much-needed cover and the flexibility required for different occasions. Careful consideration was also given to the selection and layout of the furniture in order to accommodate the restaurant’s various social needs. Challenges The Beacon’s rural location, lofty perch and terraced layout presented the team with several challenges during the construction phase. Access via a narrow country lane meant that the project was logistically difficult, especially in terms of deliveries – and once on site, most materials had to be moved by hand instead of with machinery. As with all commercial projects, hitting the completion date for the grand opening was crucial and put pressure on the project build – but despite the obstacles, Farlam & Chandler successfully delivered, creating a unique space that connects visitors to the wider landscape and enriches their dining experience. 4 Intimate lower decked terrace beneath an iconic pergola, mirroring the I’ll Be Mother logo 5 Sunrise at The Beacon 6 Early morning view of the iconic pergola 7 The original terrace area 8 The original welcome area 9 Original terrace needing a new lease of life

TURN OF EVENTS NT KILLINGLEY Fielding Johnson Square at the University of Leicester was redeveloped as a clean events space

N

T Killingley was appointed as the principal contractor for the redevelopment of an existing underused car park, situated at the heart of the University of Leicester’s main campus. Barry Chinn Associates was appointed as lead designer for the project, with Bridges Pound undertaking the engineering detail. Project background The existing area comprised a combination of heavily patched tarmac and a single line of ash trees that were set within diamond tree pits. There was a limited amount of ornamental planting with low ecological value, which looked tired and formed a visual barrier between the space and the adjacent pedestrian route. The brief from the university was to create a high-quality, multiuse events space that catered for the needs of various user groups and could easily host marquees and hold a wide variety of 48

events showcasing the best of Leicester. Prior to works commencing, the university conducted a trial closure of the Fielding Johnson car park to assess the impact on staff and visitors. During the trial, a number of events were held in the space, demonstrating its potential to hold bigger and better activities once it was transformed. Design The paving layout was designed to create a clutter-free space, with clear, unobstructed access routes connecting to the surrounding campus. landscape materials was chosen to complement the architectural styling of the buildings. Warm sandstone was selected to wrap around the Grade II-listed Fielding Johnson Building, forming a plinth around its base, while clean lines of granite were used to continue the strong axis leading towards the fully glazed library building. A combination of contemporary silver-grey concrete aggregate paving was chosen for the main central square, with dashes of more natural tones included to add warmth and depth and feature contrasting bands dissecting the space. provide spatial definition and attractive seasonal interest. Trees were picked to best meet the needs of the site, with formal upright species Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Fastigiatum’ selected to line the central pedestrian access route leading to the library, and Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ – large-stature trees with incredible leaf shape and dazzling autumn colour – used to frame the central square. Minimal street furniture ensures an uninterrupted space, with the large granite units working as both retaining structures and seating areas around the perimeter. lines and minimalist colour palette chosen to tie in with the clean granite paving and the straight contrasting bands within the central square. In addition, the installation of Wi-Fi and lighting helped to create a practical and safe environment for students and visitors. Challenges There were many demanding logistical and operational constraints involved with the development. The confined nature of the site, as well as the need to maintain pedestrian routes at all times, provided a challenge to the programming of the scheme. A decision was made to split the works into two phases, completing the main central courtyard area first to allow access around the perimeter of the site, before undertaking the adjoining

pathways to allow pedestrian access through the newly paved courtyard. Careful stock control was key to make best use of limited storage space, and weekend working was undertaken in areas where pedestrian routes needed to be closed. The segregation between deliveries and students, teachers and visitors was critical to ensuring a safe, successful project. Material and plant deliveries were arranged and timed to avoid the busiest periods of day, arriving on rigid axle lorries with designated haulage routes. NT Killingley’s site manager worked closely with on-site security to ensure safe access was maintained, and a banksman controlled all plant and vehicle movements. The outcome of the project is a practical area, with the transformed square linking a number of buildings and spaces at the heart of

campus to provide a much-improved, vibrant outdoor space for socialising, relaxing and studying. Working collaboratively with both the university and Barry Chinn Associates, the scheme was completed to the highest standard of workmanship.

IT’S NOT JUST A TREE It’s not just a tree – it’s an incredible air cleaning, flood reducing, urban cooling, shade providing, health improving, pollution removing, aesthetically breath taking, urban miracle. Oh, and it also happens to increase real estate values, enhance retail sales, improve school academic results, boost hospital convalescence rates, protect from ram raids and reduce urban crime levels. A tree is the only thing we know of, that you can put in an urban environment and (if planted with appropriate uncompacted soil volume) it will increase in value every year it lives...

his year, London nightclub Annabel’s opened the doors to its new location at 46 Berkeley Square, a Grade I-listed Georgian mansion house. Cameron Landscapes and Gardens was briefed to design and create ‘must-see’ destination gardens and planting to complement the Palladian architecture and opulent interior. The business designed the garden terrace, smoking terrace and lightwell, and dressed the façade of the building. Design and build The key influencing factors on the design were the Annabel’s philosophy, the style of the building, and the atmosphere that Cameron Landscapes wanted to achieve. The intention was to create an enchanting space that reflected and enhanced the magnificence of the structure and its history, while providing a modern twist and encapsulating 21st-century glamour. The result is comfortable,

eclectic and full of personality, providing an inviting, sophisticated space. Each area has its own charm, but there is a unifying thread throughout. Plants of different heights, shapes, thicknesses and textures were used in layers to great effect, providing depth, balance and interest. A strong evergreen backbone of tree ferns, palm trees, Magnolia and Camellia is underplanted and dressed with vibrant seasonal planting, while several large trees give the feeling of a woodland glade – complete with woodland groundcover, which can be changed according to the season. The plant selection has created a most unusual and rare collection for central London, and urns, planters, wall hangings and built-in troughs were chosen to complement the opulent interior. With the club open for the majority of any 24-hour period, it was important that the design and materials worked seamlessly from day to night. Whatever the time, visitors needed to be Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 53

transported to and engulfed by an unexpected, verdant oasis. At night, clever, subtle lighting transforms the space into a magical experience. Challenges Space and functionality With Annabel’s being a commercial space, Cameron had to design around the required number of covers – so one of the most significant challenges was creating high impact, memorable gardens in the space available. The team worked with pots and planters rather than planting beds, which take up more space and can’t be moved to accommodate extra covers. The climbers installed on both the garden terrace and smoking terrace were a mix of artificial and natural, reducing the need for beds and allowing access to the likes of air conditioning units behind the trellising. Health and safety The gardens are visited daily by hundreds of members, so the team had to carefully consider all materials and plants from a health and safety perspective. This also meant ensuring each item was firmly secured, and that there were no sharp edges on the foliage.

54

PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 54

Temperature Due to the gardens’ commercial nature, the temperature needs to be kept above a set minimum; during the cooler months, there will be artificial heating, and throughout summer, the retractable glass roof by steel architects Waagner Biro will be opened more frequently. Cameron Landscapes took this into account when selecting the plants, as some specimens would not survive in this environment.

Materials The terrace employs a combination of both traditional and tropical planting, including: • Large established trees with evergreen value: Veitchia, Citrus, Dicksonia, Taxus domes. • Evergreen and seasonal climbers: Trachelospermum jasminoides, Clematis armandii. • Colourful and seasonal bedding plants and bulbs: Hydrangea, Galanthus, Hyacinth, Narcissus, azaleas.

Deliveries The central London location meant that careful planning was needed when craning in the large central tree and other plants of significant size; surrounding roads and pedestrians had to be considered carefully.

An eclectic mix of pots have used throughout the scheme, showcasing some beautiful examples of reclaimed French and English planters. The team went to great lengths to source special one-off pieces, including decorative enamelled ‘Rouen’ French planters dating back to the 18th century, as well as sculptural antique urns and reclaimed Bath and Portland stone pots. This diverse mix of carefully selected materials lends a unique and decadent style to the finished terrace. The use of reclaimed Yorkstone for the flooring and Purbeck stone for the bespoke drystone wall planter ensure high impact and ‘wow factor’, as well as creating the feeling of being outside and contributing to the desired atmosphere.

years and house construction traffic had resulted in severe waterlogging, leaving the site in a poor state when works first began. This had also led to some of the existing mature trees within the grounds becoming distressed. Ryan Alexander overcame this hurdle by bringing in a specialist arborist to carry out radial trenching of the trees to bring them back to good health. Sourcing materials Ryan Alexander, along with the architect, spent a vast amount of time researching and sourcing materials to be used. The team set up specific areas during the build using samples, such as a small dry-stone wall, a selection of grouting colours with different paving and an assortment of soft plants, so that the client could see and touch the products in order to select which options they preferred. This created a practical environment where ideas could be discussed and evolved as a team, between designer, builder, and client. 58

Special requirements Burlington Stone products were key features within the house and these were carried through into the sunken garden, with contrast bands of the same interior stone used to bring the two areas together. The client was keen to grow fruit trees so that he could produce cider and apple juice, so Ryan Alexander sourced specialist espaliers from France and Somerset, known for their juice and cider-making qualities. The client was also keen to reuse materials from the pre-existing property, so the bricks for the kitchen garden were all reclaimed from the old house. Ryan Alexander’s exceptional attention to detail saw them take home the top accolade at this year’s APL Awards, scooping the muchcoveted Supreme Winner award as well as winning the Project Value Over £200,000 category. Described by the judges as: “An impressive and inspirational achievement for other landscapers, with the opportunity to interpret all available space with creative planting achieved to perfection.”

Domestic Garden Construction – between £100k£250k

GREY MATTER CUBE 1994 Cube 1994 transforms a traditional courtyard into a stunning contemporary space complete with outdoor kitchen

H

aving designed and built a very traditional courtyard for the client 16 years previously, Cube 1994 was invited back and asked to transform the garden with a contemporary style. The new design would see the courtyard divided into a series of spaces, including a relaxation area with sofas and a 1.6m long fire table as its centrepiece, a sheltered spot complete with its own outdoor kitchen where the clients could dine and a second ‘open-air’ dining space. The client was also keen to incorporate water, lighting and a grey colour scheme. Design/build The team decided to retain the clipped box hedge from the original courtyard, as this would work equally well in a contemporary setting, and added a selection of modern specimen plants to give the new garden an instant sense of maturity. To separate the relaxation area from the open-air dining space, a large bespoke water feature was designed and installed. Formed from light grey Yorkstone, and measuring 4m by 1m, it features a self-contained metal tank to house the water, pumps and electrics for the fibre optic

lighting. Flanked by two parallel flowerbeds to soften the large expanse of space, the combination of subtle movement, sound and light makes this water feature multidimensional and a real sensory highlight of the garden. The bespoke nature of the water feature meant it was a first for Cube 1994. The team had to design a system for the feature to function, as well as futureproofing it for any ongoing maintenance required. A large 4,040mm x 1,040mm tank, holding 400 gallons of water, was created with two wing tanks, one dry and one wet. The tank was built onto concrete block padstones with ‘I’ beams running down the full length of the tank for support. A rubber flange was placed over the contact points to prevent any reverberation. Inside the tank, stainless steel supports were designed for each of the 280kg sections of Yorkstone, which had been predrilled, presealed and finished with a pencil rounded edge. To include fibre optic lighting in the feature, Cube 1994 designed its own system to allow the optical fibres to be integrated into the water pipe. The optical lighting was installed in the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

dry tank with a recessed access cover, and the pumps were placed in the wet side. When switched on, the gentle flow of the pumps was adjusted to create just enough flow to allow the surface area of the Yorkstone to be covered. The 100-year-old outbuilding was given a makeover, with two sets of doors and a central dividing wall taken out to create a generous outdoor kitchen and dining area. A large section of oak was cut to create lintels on either side of the building, supported by four 250mm x 250mm uprights, and a king post was positioned in the centre, along with two further decorative trusses to support the pendant lighting. Continuing the garden’s neutral grey colour palette, the interior walls were coated with

a Monocouche render in a light grey RAL code, while the external walls were covered in a dark grey slate to add much-needed texture. Cube 1994 finished the space with a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with bespoke stainless steel work surfaces, drinks cooler, a sink with hot and cold water, storage and a barbecue. To add heat at night or on cooler days, two ceramic radiant heaters were placed at either end of the room, above head height. A second water feature was incorporated, set into the dark grey slate wall. Installed with an auto top-up tank due to the windy nature of the site, the striking water blade was also backlit to accentuate the flowing water. To add texture and height, six Urbis planters were strategically placed, planted with dwarf Astelia ‘Silver Spear’, and backlit to enhance the mood at night. Three-metre high Taxus baccata was used to screen the boiler room from the courtyard, with underplanting of Buxus balls and perennials, and multi-stemmed Osmanthus aquifolium planted in front. The remaining flower beds had a similar theme repeating through them, including Verbena bonariensis, Eremurus, Veronica, Salvia, Agapanthus, Cerinthe, Phlox, Digitalis, tulips, Eryngium, Echinops and Buxus balls. The team incorporated mood lighting around the courtyard to complete the overall effect. Winning a BALI National Landscape Award in 2017, the garden was selected for demonstrating exemplary standards of professional excellence.

FOREST SCHOOL

MAY 2018

STEPHEN MARTLEW LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE E-ACT Blackley Academy’s underused playing field becomes a wild wonderland, helping pupils tune into nature

S

tephen Martlew Landscape Architecture (SMLA) was appointed to deliver improvements to E-ACT Blackley Academy in early 2015. The brief focused on the development of a ‘habitat area’ on the school field, including an outdoor teaching space, all-weather pitch, places to grow fruit and vegetables, wetland and woodland – reinforcing the school’s commitment to the Forest School ethos. It also included improvements to the car park and entrance areas. E-ACT Blackley Academy is a primary school in North Manchester, with an age range of four to 11 years old. For several years, the

school has arranged visits to nearby Boggart Hole Clough to carry out woodland-based play and learning activities with Forest School practitioners. The academy saw an opportunity to transform its underused playing field so that it could develop this type of learning on site. Tendering the project to four contractors and using a traditional procurement route enabled smaller local contractors to bid for the project; this kept overheads and preliminaries down, and enabled SMLA to achieve a lot with the budget. Excavations from the new classroom building were used to construct

landform areas, which saved on the cost of moving the material off site, and allowed SMLA to play with levels and model the ground on a previously flat site. Design and build • Entrances and car park Works to the car park included resurfacing and reorganising. Pedestrian access was redefined with two distinct entrances, and railings were introduced to separate pedestrians and vehicles. The pedestrian routes were surfaced in warm Tobermore Retro paviours, which blended well with the building’s brickworks.

• Early Years area Staff were keen to have a play feature that would encourage imagination; SMLA developed the idea of a natural play area with rounded boulders, which has facilitated social interaction and imaginative play. Before placing the rocks, care was taken to ensure they had the optimum spacing for preventing falls and accidents. Drawings by Year 1 pupils were incorporated into a composite artwork for the Early Years gate, which was laser cut into corten steel and fabricated by local metal workers Strongpoint Engineering. The two corner beds were filled with a selection of herbs, along with ‘Katy’ apple trees. • Habitat area A raised, stepped area was created to serve as an outdoor classroom, performance space and viewing point, with a series of large, polished concrete pebbles added to the edge as a playful element and a counterpoint to the Early Years area’s more natural boulders. The 3G all-weather pitch provides year-round use.

• Growing area Raised, timber-edged growing areas allow each class to have its own mini vegetable patch, with Japanese quince planted to the rear. The southern edge of the field was planted with mostly native fruit trees, sourced from RV Roger in Pickering. These included apple, pear, damson, plum and sweet chestnut trees, as well as an Isaac Newton apple tree that is descended from the original! • Woodland habitat Native trees were planted as feathered whips at 2-2.5m, giving a more open character and avoiding the need for excessive thinning. These included holly, rowan, field maple and birch. Seven extra-heavy standard oaks were spread across the area to give immediate impact, as well as trees that provide edible nuts, such as sweet chestnut and hazel. It is hoped that the many self-seeded ash trees to the site’s eastern edge will spread and establish within the woodland. The area is under-seeded with Emorsgate woodland mix, which includes shade-tolerant species that will be allowed to develop as a meadow. Hedgerow planting, including blackthorn, dogrose, holly, elder and hawthorn, has been added around the perimeter, providing privacy and security. • Wetland Sown with an Emorsgate meadow mixture, the wetland perches above the heavy clay subsoil underlying the football pitch. Juncus effusus, Rogersia and Gunnera manicata impart a playful aspect. A timber boardwalk snakes through, interlocking with the landform. Sourcing materials All of the paving construction within the field area was permeable, in order to comply with flood risk requirements from Manchester City

Council. Precast Elementale seating units were chosen for their smoothness, making them safer for children to clamber over, and a bound gravel path made from recycled material links elements within the habitat area. Yellow Balau Hardwood from Silva Timber was used for the decking. Challenges The pitch had been designated as a playing field, but was poorly drained and only usable between May and September. Sport England, which was negotiated with during planning, insisted the project had an element of organised sports activity, so a proposal with a 3G all-weather pitch to Football Association-approved dimensions was agreed. The site investigation revealed high concentrations of lead in one part of the field, caused by a land-drainage system with a cinder backfill around the drainage pipes. The area was covered with a root barrier and an overlay of 600mm minimum of subsoil and topsoil. All growing areas and those planted with orchard trees were treated similarly, to prevent roots from growing into contaminated zones. 1 Outdoor classroom area beside pitch 2 The boardwalk and wetland area 3 Boulders in natural play area 4 Drawing of the playfield section 5 The Corten gate 6 Raised beds, with one for each class

‘Walberton’s Silver Dormouse’, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’, Hebe Garden Beauty Blue and Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’. KLG does not often use artificial grass, but did use a high quality product in some of the smaller, shaded areas due to its durability and low maintenance. KLG used matte black GRP planters from Europlanters, which were integrated with seating. Providing a clean and simple look, the black was chosen to set off the planting. Durable and lightweight, they were ideal – especially as they needed to be carried to their position by hand. The team installed green roofs made from sedum matting with aluminium edging; these offer an environment for insects and birds, help with carbon footprint and surface runoff, provide sustainable urban drainage, improve water quality for other uses, and offer insulation, noise and fire prevention. Although inaccessible to residents, the green roofs are an integral part of the scheme due to the biodiversity they will bring. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Challenges Located in the centre of Ealing, access caused difficulties: getting material to site and to the various roof levels meant that all materials needed to be moved onsite by crane and hoist, or manually through the buildings. In addition, last minute changes to schedule for the removal of cranes meant that KLG’s work needed to be brought forward at very short notice. Despite the challenges, this former car park in the heart of Ealing has been transformed into a bustling mixed-use development with communal gardens, stunning roof terraces and wildlife habitats, winning KLG two BALI Awards in 2017 – including a Principal Award for its work on the project.

EBB AND FLOW HABITAT LANDSCAPES LTD A contemporary water rill garden to complement a sleek new glazed extension

H

aving used award-winning Nicolas Tye Architects to design a contemporary glazed extension, the owners didn’t want to cut corners on their garden. The extension offered a striking and eclectic contrast to the existing dairy barn, and now required a much larger, lower patio, with the upper garden also undergoing a revamp. The Habitat Landscapes team was invited to realise the design and transform the garden into a space that did justice to the sleek new structure. The design needed to provide ‘flow’ around the garden, allowing access to the top area for storage and the oil tank, and to a newly located side gate. Although the lower area already had warm and rustic aged bricks, which formed the old building and a high wall, the lower patio had to have the ‘wow’ factor of the extension, picking up on its design lines. Fitted seating, and a water feature that could be enjoyed from all aspects, was also required, with lighting a key part of this. In the upper area, the garden became more linked to its rural surroundings, so

a ‘less is more’ approach was desired. Having worked with both Nicolas Tye Architects and Habitat Landscapes before, Sue Gilbert of Sue Gilbert Gardens by Design took on the task. Design and build The design linked the paving and transition to the upper garden with the house’s new footprint. This was framed by the existing high, old brick walls, creating a natural lower space for a much larger patio. Rather than simply creating a flat expanse of paving, Sue broke up the paved areas with pebble channels and a new water rill. The narrow channels and paving layout made the space feel larger, while also drawing the eye away from the complex angles of the building in relation to the boundaries. One of the biggest challenges was to ensure all the channels worked consistently with uniformed paving. Wider, more generous steps completed the design, allowing improved access to, and an open view of, the upper garden. Materials Some time was taken to liaise with the client when it came to finalising materials, resulting in the choice of London Stone ‘Urban Grey Porcelain’, which has a textured finish and provides an excellent colour relationship to the house. This paving formed the steps and the cladding of the raised beds that framed the patio. To bring the warm brick together with the cooler stone, Habitat suggested using treated cedar from Silva Timber. In the upper garden, the feel changed to softer materials, with the greys

repeated using Marshalls ‘Argent’ block paving to form a non-slip path to the rear gate and storage area. The infills for the channels in the patio were given impact using black polished pebbles, softening to ‘Wivenhoe’ gravel for the upper gravel garden areas. Softwood timber was used to create arches, linking parts of the upper garden and creating height. Special requirements and challenges The water feature required extensive planning: at 5.6m long, and fabricated in one piece, it had to be positioned early on in the build. Given the site’s limited access, and the fact that a series of hoists were needed to manoeuvre it, this was tricky in itself – but also meant that the levels and layout for the paving pattern and falls had to be perfect. This attention to detail came down to a few millimetres in tolerance. Access also presented an ongoing challenge for the team. There was only one route into the garden, and this was also the main vehicle access channel for all of the dairy’s barns. This meant that timed deliveries, removals using small lorries and constant communication with other residents was needed, to ensure no one was inconvenienced. The result is a seamless installation that has the ‘wow’ factor the clients hoped for. A final touch was the addition of the garden’s millstone. Part of the water feature, and harking back to the house’s original function as a dairy farm, it was tailor-made by London Stone at Habitat’s request, and engraved with a personalised tribute to a much-loved pet.

he clients called on Langdale Landscapes Ltd to transform their garden into an inviting space that offered seamless indoor-outdoor living. The existing landscaping was very dated and in a poor state of repair, detracting from the fantastic architectural property, which was built in the Seventies. Designer and colleague Nic Howard of We Love Plants restyled the garden to give the clients a lifestyle space that would really draw them to spend time outside. 1 Seamless indoor-outdoor living

Design and build The garden’s multilevel areas presented a challenge when it came to breaking up the stark lines of the rear terraces so that they connected with the sizeable garden, which originally felt very separate. The design, however, managed to resolve this problem, creating an amazing space that flowed well. The concept was to create three very distinct spaces: a main area by the kitchen, a lower deck linking with the indoor swimming pool, and a projection pushing out into the garden, where the clients could be immersed in large borders. These areas enabled the team to break up the solid lines at the back of the house, producing intimate spaces that link with the wider garden and blend with the borders – which are filled with perennial plants for season-long flowers. The team worked with two key materials: Millboard decking and porcelain paving. Both are hardwearing and feel great underfoot. The result is a tactile space that encourages the user to wander out in bare feet. The main lawn had been levelled at an awkward angle to the house and looked wrong when viewed from the property; Langdale Landscapes completely regraded the area, blending the levels to create a lovely large lawn that synthesises with the new scheme. To complete the build, the team installed a lighting scheme that highlights features such as the steps and large Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ trees planted within the deck and paved areas. Materials The deck by the kitchen was constructed using concrete blockwork pillars, set onto concrete foundations to support the decking frame. The frame – constructed with 150mm x 50mm timbers and bolted together with coach bolts – 74

was then fixed to this, and completed with Millboard Smoked Oak decking, secured to the frame via lost head stainless steel screws. The terrace areas were built using concrete rafts as the sub-base, reinforced with steel mesh. These were paved with Khaki Porcelain paving slabs, which were laid in a staggered bond with 3mm joints. Millboard Smoked Oak decking was also employed for the projection that reaches out into the garden. A typical deck construction, it uses timber posts set onto concrete pads, with a 150mm x 50mm softwood timber frame bolted together. The decking was then fixed in place using lost head stainless steel screws. Special requirements The garden’s south-facing orientation meant that the terraced areas became extremely hot during the summer, so a Renson structure was incorporated into the design. Positioned

directly outside the property’s kitchen-diner, it allows the clients to dine alfresco and entertain guests. Langdale Landscapes installed infrared heaters, extending the use of this space into the night. An enthusiastic apiarist, the client wanted a planting scheme that would keep the bees happy. The team created sweeping borders that bring the scheme together and set the garden within the landscape.

Design Inspired by the walled garden and the house itself, the garden exploits space and suggests enclosure to create the sense of separate, but connected, garden ‘rooms’. Hedges form the main structural element, unifying the garden and its elements while also creating privacy. The boundary wall is also exploited as a structural backdrop and a major defining feature. The garden has been zoned into ‘arrival’, ‘play’, ‘relaxation’, ‘socialising’ and ‘leisure’ areas. Paving elements are simplified to large concrete pavers and gravel, maintaining a link to the simple, bold architecture of the house. The gravel driveway helps with security, and as a material is economic over large areas. The runs of hedge are relatively short, and www.prolandscapermagazine.com

and in terms of maintenance. The client was keen to preserve the existing apple and pear trees, with the possibility of enhancement or organisation of the meadow beneath. The garden’s locust tree (Robinia) was also valued, and needed to be retained. An improved sense of arrival and clarity to the front door was required, achieved with new gates and a structural hedge line that was made more secure to prevent access by dogs, rabbits and deer. The compost area in the rear garden needed to be relocated, as it occupied a prime location, and the existing pond was removed.

aspects. This was a key factor in the design development, removing the need for specialist cleaning equipment at ground level and thus reducing annual maintenance costs. As night falls, the square’s appearance undergoes a theatrical transformation through a spectacular display of colour, light and motion. The lighting has been carefully balanced to deliver a flexible, playful night-time setting while maintaining the functional requirements for a city centre. Lighting levels have been selected to best balance the differing pedestrian experiences, aiding navigation around the park and challenging the traditional approach to large-scale landscaped spaces. The City Park lighting installation is managed via a central lighting control system, which responds to the 82

rising and falling water levels, as well as any artistic requirements. Materials Gillespies designed City Park’s mirror pool to be surrounded by a 4m-wide hardwood boardwalk – a ‘beach’ around the pool that allows visitors to dip their feet into the water during the summer. The wider site is constructed in equally high quality materials, from the granite sett mirror pool to porphyry and sandstone paving. All paving in the central area is designed to withstand high vehicle and point loading, so that the space is suitable for events of all sizes. Gillespies selected hard landscaping materials to tie in with those used elsewhere in Bradford’s public realm spaces, embedding City Park into the fabric of the city.

esigner Cherry Mills was asked to transform this large, south-facing plot on a chalky slope into a more sociable and elegant space where the clients could entertain. Keen to expand their existing patio so it could seat more people, they also envisaged a sequence of seating areas across the garden’s level changes, to provide interest and lead people on a ‘journey’. Views that were blocked by overgrown beds would be opened up to offer the owners more interesting vistas, and a rainwater harvesting tank was to be installed at the top of the garden, away from the main lawn, to supply various taps located around the garden. Design and build Cherry’s attractive design offered a series of external ‘rooms’ to break up the large expanse of space – from the formal Buxus kitchen garden on one side, to the open turf area on the other. These rooms included an outdoor dining and cooking terrace to accommodate the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

clients’ large family gatherings, balanced with a cosier sofa seating area enjoying views from an elevated position within the garden. Living Landscapes were invited to realise the hard landscaped elements of Cherry’s design, but firstly needed to clear and excavate some of the existing plot to make more space. As the patio slanted away from the house but also cut into the sloped garden, the team had to create beds along the walls, so that surface water could drain. To break up the large paved area by the house, herringbone brickwork was introduced at all access points from the property. This then led up to steps, taking users on a trip through the garden ‘rooms’. The majority of the patio

featured Kotah Brown Limestone paving from Silverland Stone, offering subtle green-grey tones. Fortunately, the level changes within the garden caused little difficulty for Living Landscapes. Setting out required a central point, located where the water feature now stands on the main terrace. From here, the curved retaining wall that defines the entertainment space was set out and the angles of the wall confirmed. As the ground was chalk and flint, it was relatively simple for Living Landscapes to dig out with an excavator. Interestingly, the most difficult aspect of the build was not the sloping nature of the garden or its many level changes, but accessing the rear site when no work was being undertaken at the front or sides of the property. This meant that the front drive had to be cleared of its subbase while retaining the gravel so it could be reinstated following completion. Paved and soft areas were also boarded to prevent vehicular and plant damage. The finished garden now provides the owners with a stylish space in which to entertain, as well as attractive views from their house. The expanded terrace offers plenty of space for social gatherings and includes a playful ‘bubbling pot’ water feature that adds movement and sound. The clever design – which includes a number of seating areas throughout the garden, to encourage exploration – also features an avenue of cherry trees beyond the terrace, as well as a new herb garden accessed via an intricate wire arch. Planting includes a number of grey-leafed plants that thrive on chalky soil, in a palette of gentle pinks, blues and whites. An irrigation system supplied by LWS, and hard-wearing Rolawn Medallion Turf from the London Lawn Turf company, complete the scheme.

WHEELBARROW Building a relaxed and quintessentially Cornish garden for a family home in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall

T

o make the most of summer, the client wanted a garden that was modern, clean and functional for the family, and which maximised the stunning views of the sea from the property. The house had recently been renovated into a modern, stylish family home, and the outside space needed to reflect and complement the clean, functional design.

SILVER PROJECT VALUE £100,000 TO £200,000

Design and build Award-winning garden designer Darren Hawkes created a unique front-to-back ‘wraparound’ garden that necessitated a huge change in levels and gave Wheelbarrow the opportunity to build a large feature wall using locally quarried stone. Wheelbarrow also built and planted a series of terraced borders, and used western red cedar for the fencing. Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 87

The rear garden was designed as a family space with a functional element, featuring oak seating cubes around a fire table where the client’s children could gather. There is also a seating area for adult dining, and a shower that those returning from the beach can use to rinse off seawater. An oak walkway leads to a summerhouse, providing shelter from the rain. Initially, the front of the house was bricked over for parking. To blend this area seamlessly into the garden, Wheelbarrow built a soft parking area at road level, using gravel interspersed with planting, supported by reinforced concrete. A drystone wall was built in front of this, and a further parking area was created using reclaimed granite setts. Materials Schellevis paving in 1m x 1m slabs was used for the paths around the side of the property, along with beautiful channel drain covers from Lateral Design Studio, and bespoke oak seating and walkways from Mark Tungate. Planting The beachside location influenced the planting scheme of this project. Quercus ilex was used for hedging, along with Teucrium fruticans and a large multi-stemmed mulberry tree. Marram grass further complemented the coastal garden feel, alongside Stipa gigantea. Challenges Limited views from the garden needed to be maximised, while also providing privacy and 88

PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

screening from surrounding properties. To achieve this, Wheelbarrow constructed raised walkways throughout and positioned the summerhouse to take in the sea view. Fencing was then used to screen the neighbouring houses and to draw the eye down the garden towards the sea. The 5m level change over the site also proved a challenge for the team, and the existing steps that joined the levels had treads and risers of varying heights, making them difficult to use. Wheelbarrow decided to demolish and reconfigure the steps, but this caused access issues, with the team having to use a smaller access point to the side of the property until the new ones were built. A mini digger, a power barrow and wheelbarrows were used in the interim to move equipment and materials into the garden. Despite the challenges, Wheelbarrow has created a harmonious garden that is both functional and beautiful. Flowing seamlessly from front to back, it provides the owners with a practical yet restful retreat, encapsulating the Cornish coast in its choice of materials and planting.

ABOUT WHEELBARROW Wheelbarrow creates beautiful landscapes and inspiring spaces in which to live, work and play. Based in Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall, it oers landscaping services throughout the West Country and garden maintenance within one hour of its base. nce a Victorian school, this exceptional property on the Regent’s Canal in Islington, north London, had already been converted into a three-storey house when the owners purchased it. The double-width property was due to undergo a series of further improvements, including the creation of a new sub-basement with open-plan kitchen, beneath the ground floor. This would provide access to a 110 sq m south east-facing garden on two levels to the rear, in need of total transformation. Having previously created two stunning roof

terraces for the clients, Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was invited to undertake the project. Design The clients wanted a garden that exuded an elegant and contemporary style, visible from all floors of the property through its double-height Crittall windows which were being fitted to the rear façade of the house. The new basement needed to be dug out by over one metre, so the rear garden also had to be re-levelled to ensure it did not ‘fall into’ the house visually. Using a complementary palette of materials and colours,

Charlotte Rowe Garden Design created two seating areas; one easily accessible from the kitchen on the lower floor to catch the morning sun, and a second on the upper level to sit alongside a chic dining area protected by a multi-stem Carpinus betulus tree. Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 91

From the lower floor, stairs leading up to the second elevation were designed asymmetrically to one side to allow ample space for the U-shaped, built-in seating. The clients were keen for maximum privacy, so a dark grey trellis was introduced to enclose the garden, against which several evergreen climbers were planted, and a mature holm oak was craned in over the house to screen off the neighbour’s property. To provide a focus from the house, and to break up the brutalism of the brick wall facing it, a fireplace was also installed on the upper level. Climbers and hedging were then planted on either side to further soften the façade, with sofas and easy chairs placed in front. In line with the client’s brief to use a grey palette throughout, the interior polished poured concrete floors were continued outside, where a darker grey gravel area, complementary grey render walls and deep grey trellis offer the perfect colour scheme against which to set the rich planting. Planting The structural planting included three trees; the holm oak, multi-stem Carpinus betulus in gravel and an existing – but re-positioned – olive tree. Cutting laterally across the space to provide interest and depth, two layers of hedging were added, comprising of Buxus sempervirens, dwarf Japanese bamboo and Pleioblastus pygmaeus ‘Distichus’. Other planting included a mix of shrubs, grasses

and perennials with signature summer colour provided by Agapanthus ‘Black Pantha’. A range of garden lighting – including lanterns and assorted vintage festoon lamps in the trees – provide a year-round view at night, from three floors of the house, creating a dramatic night scene. Challenges In terms of hard landscaping, the garden was a complex design and construction challenge. The client wanted a seamless transition from interior to exterior so there were a number of elements which needed to work together to achieve a cohesive whole. Georgian underground drains and sewers made for a further challenge, together with a 10m high brick wall at the end of the garden which dominated the space. The levels were particularly difficult, as the team did not want to excavate too much due to the expense and a reduction in light to the garden. The final design included three tiers; a lower terrace, two raised planting beds surrounding the wrap-around staircase, and a large upper level complete with seating and

dining area, fireplace and raised beds – some of which are at the original ground level. The rendered fireplace was one of the largest Charlotte Rowe Garden Design had ever built, and all the components had to be carefully devised, including the polished concrete hearth, creating an extra challenge for the designers.

rogheath Landscapes were invited to breathe new life into the gardens surrounding an Arts and Crafts house in Mayfield, East Sussex. The clients loved their beautifully crafted house and were looking for a garden to match. Through the design, Frogheath wanted to inject a sense of contemporary splendour and style, giving the property the garden it deserved. Brief It was important to the client that the garden not only looked great but was also practical. They already had a maintenance contract with two gardeners for one day a week, and were keen to keep this going once Frogheath had completed.

This meant the formal design was not time intensive for the client, and could be managed. On initial inspection, Frogheath could see that the garden had a historical layout, including a scented rose garden, pond and gravel pathways, which had now been lost. Although a shadow of its former self and in a poor state of repair, both the client and Frogheath were keen to restore the garden to its former days of grandeur. 1 View from restored terrace 2 Restored central rill 3 Breedon gravel paths 4 Tina Vallis inspired planting design 5 R estored borders Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 95

AUGUST PORTFOLIO 2018

The hard landscaping was breaking up in places and needed to be lifted and relaId. The water rill in the main lawn was leaking and the coping was uneven and unsightly, so this would also need to be replaced. The gravel paths had ‘wandered’ over time and were no longer symmetrical or straight when viewed from the house. Plantings of Rhododendrons and Camellias were no longer looking as good as they once did and were overrun with ground elder. Drainage was also poor throughout the garden, and the client suspected that the old land drains had ceased functioning. Design and build To return the garden to its former glory and improve the flow of the space, Frogheath had to adjust the layout. This involved removing some of the more dated elements, such as the rose garden, and reshaping a number of the main borders, including those around the head of the existing rill. 96

PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 96

Frogheath lifted and relaId large sections of the original York stone paving to make it less of a trip hazard, whilst correcting the drainage throughout the scheme. However, the weather unfortunately turned and became a serious hindrance over the winter, with the garden becoming so waterlogged that construction had to cease for a couple of months until conditions improved. Ground elder also proved to be an ongoing issue throughout the build. Frogheath tackled this by removing much of the old planting and replacing the soil to eliminate infestation. The team additionally overhauled the main lawn, completely reconstructing it so the garden now boasts an impeccable and luxurious, traditionally striped formal green, in perfect keeping with the period property. To further restore the garden’s classic symmetry, the gravel paths and central rill also received a makeover, adding crisp and defined lines to the design. The new planting scheme used massed perennials and grasses to create more

colour and movement within the garden, and to contrast with its existing yew hedges and large, mature trees. 6 Restored formal layout 7 Redesigned borders 8 Newly laid turf 9 Drainage was an issue 10 New steps during construction 11 Work stopped during a wet winter 12 Layout restored

T

he Active Spaces project was launched as part of the council’s commitment to support the development of active, healthy communities by enhancing its network of parks and open spaces. The project aims to publicise the positive benefits of outdoor play and physical activity on health and wellbeing, encouraging children and their families to be more active, and increasing community involvement and participation in Hounslow’s parks. Key to these principles was the requirement that each new ‘Active Space’ be designed in consultation with residents, thereby promoting usage. Landscaping and environmental sustainability were considered together with the cost benefits and play value to users. Project background Responding to statistics charting the rise in childhood obesity in the UK, the project was designed to ensure children and young people, families and other key stakeholders had a clear role in the shaping of their parks and open spaces. Dialogue around health and wellbeing, physical activity and moving more were key throughout the consultation process. The London Borough of Hounslow has the eighth highest proportion of green space in London, offering local residents easy access to outdoor activities. However, in recent years some play areas have become tired and in need of refurbishment. The council are currently investing £1.1m to improve selected play sites across the borough with further funding expected to be secured through the Community Infrastructure Levy. The design The project saw the council partner with award-winning architects LUC to design new Active Spaces at existing playground sites. LUC is passionate about play and accessible quality play landscapes. Their play design began with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens and includes the award-winning Tumbling Bay at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. For LUC, it was critical to the success of the Active Spaces project to: •G ain a thorough understanding of the constraints and opportunities presented •E ngage wildly and deeply with the local www.prolandscapermagazine.com

ACTIVE SPACES THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HOUNSLOW A commitment to healthy living and community engagement has transformed outdoor spaces in Hounslow community to identify existing issues and needs • Generate a conversation with parents, teachers, children and visitors about outdoor play and its benefits to health and wellbeing. Rather than being led by play equipment choices, LUC used ‘play mapping’ from the perspective of the child. By looking at the experiences a child needs to have when playing, and then mapping these onto the site, encouraging exercise and freedom, whatever the age or ability of the child. Initial concept designs were developed to incorporate a full range of activities known to be critical for healthy physical and mental development, and suitable for children of all ages and abilities. Each play space contained elements to encourage high activity and collaborative play, as well as more restful areas for children and adults. The comfort of carers is critical, as this is strongly linked to the length of stay in any play area. Effective community engagement was central to the quality of designs. Multiple channels of communication included on-site consultations incorporating games and activities; children’s workshops; a design competition for schools and an online questionnaire. The design process for the project ensured that the community and the council worked closely, so that each space reflected the context of the local area. Five schools took part in the design and build of the space, and the designers captured thoughts and ideas at 12

onsite public engagement events receiving valuable input. The build This level of community involvement would continue through the implementation phase, with the selected contractor idverde offering volunteering and educational opportunities during construction. When approaching any project idverde strive to engage local communities, and a key focus of Active Spaces was to continue the positive engagement process from the design stage. 1 Climbing structure at Redlees Park 2 St Dunstan's playground 3 Pupils from Oak Hill Academy lend a hand 4 Cradle Nest swing suitable for different ages 5 LUC consultation event, Redlees Park 6 Concept plan Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 99

The council also identified local schools to participate in the project build, with pupils taking part in planting activities and taster play sessions before the playground was officially open for use. A total of 328 volunteer hours have so far been delivered on the project, with this expected to exceed 500 hours as the council continue to engage groups over the next 12 months.

DURING BUILD

Materials Given current constraints on local authority budgets it was essential for designs and material selections to factor in the ongoing cost of maintenance and to consider refurbishing existing elements where feasible. The emphasis was on high quality, robust, durable and low maintenance items. Existing pieces of play equipment that were popular and in good structural condition — such as the climbing frame at St Dunstan’s — were sanded and re-painted to increase their lifespan.

Savings were made by moving to less intensive grass cutting regimes and to a more natural character at each site. Low cost interventions included timber logs for play trail items sourced through one of The London Borough of Hounslow’s green waste sites, as well as ground markings for scooter trails. The majority of play equipment was constructed from mountain larch (Larix decidua montania) – a timber with enhanced durability – incorporating steel and wire fixings. ‘TigerMulch’ was used as an impact absorbing surface; made from recycled rubber tyres it has high tensile strength and being a bound material needs little maintenance.

SERENITY AT WORK ALEXANDRA STEED URBAN Sky’s mixed-use campus in West London has been transformed into a calm, leafy and inspirational work space

S

ky UK has transformed its headquarters by undertaking extensive redevelopment works on their campus in Isleworth, West London. The broadcaster undertook the project to consolidate the company’s operations and host up to 12,000 personnel. The landscape design began in April 2015, moving through concept to detailed design, and soon after construction began. The campus opened in August 2016, but all final phases of landscape construction were completed in February 2017. Brief and design The five-hectare site is adjacent to the M4 and close to Heathrow, it’s also recognisable from the air due to the identifiable wind turbine at Sky Studios. The mixed-use campus is a community in its own right and includes office space, studios and production facilities, alongside research and development zones. Designed to give Sky employees a calm, inspiring place to work, the grounds

knit the site together and offer a pleasant and leafy campus environment. Alexandra Steed Urban developed the project closely with Sky and considered the landscape in many layers, including routes, zones, character and planting areas, trees, surface types, furniture and features. Planting Around 80,000 perennial plants are surrounded by 10,000m2 of formal lawns and 300 semi-mature trees. The large oak on the bank opposite Sky Central was craned in over the building during construction. The meadow planting at the back of Sky Central and the areas heading out towards The Health and Fitness Centre are populated by wildflower which is controlled and monitored to encourage biodiversity through the site, such as pollinating insects and, as a result, birds and other wildlife to the area. The gardens are an eclectic mix of native and cultivated plants which require constant care and attention. The arrangement of landscape character areas complements the adjacent building uses and zones and are defined by their composition and selection of plant species. A perennial garden, meadow, great lawn with single oak, woodland, and wetland are all featured and in each of these spaces, planting was selected to provide seasonal beauty and interest. While the project was conceived with specific programmes in mind, it allows for flexibility, and for the people using the site to create their own patterns. 3 Bird’s eye view of the main entry, through the perennial garden to Sky Central 4 The upper walk, at the south end of the site, towards the multi-storey car park 5 Staff approaching the Sky Central main entry, through the perennial garden 6 The great lawn, terracing down from the perennial garden and framed by the woodland is an open, sunny lunchtime spot

EXTERNAL ELEGANCE FARLAM & CHANDLER The newly designed garden of a Beckenham residence cleverly reflects the home’s contemporary interior to extend family living

T

he garden attached to an elegant new build in Beckenham south London provided a completely blank canvas for Farlam & Chandler. The existing pond, swimming pool and summer house had to remain, and some beautiful mature Acer trees needed to be carefully incorporated into the design. Brief The brief from the clients was to create a garden which reflected the style of the house 104 PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

and offered an outdoor living experience to be used for both day and night throughout the year. The garden was to seamlessly flow from the inside out, flexible areas for the whole family were to be created, providing outdoor ‘rooms’ softened with lots of planting. For the soft landscaping, the client wanted Farlam & Chandler to create a contemporary formal scheme, with hints of a traditional English garden and year-round interest, reflecting the changing seasons. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Design and build The architecture of the house was transferred directly to the outdoor space, informing the structure or ‘bones’ of the garden. Farlam & Chandler created a series of connecting green spaces and two generous terraces now flow from the inside out to create separate spaces for both dining and relaxing close to the house. The pool garden, framed with architectural grasses, was linked with a calm and contemplative lawn garden, lined with pleached trees to allow for privacy while still making the spaces feel open. The sophisticated layers and play of light created in this garden also carry through at night, when the spaces come alive with carefully lit trees. The materials were selected to reflect the colour palette of the house. A buff sandstone paving and cedar decking harmonise with the buff render and yellow brick of the house façade. The fences were painted dark grey to contrast with the light paving materials and connect to the modern anthracite grey window and door frames. The programme meant that the garden was to be built alongside the new house, which created logistical difficulties at some point. Great team work and communication throughout the build was really important in making the garden successful.

Planting Yew hedges provided the primary structure through the whole garden, connecting each area and creating a crisp backdrop for the perennials and grasses. Clipped Yew topiary columns, beech cubes, bay balls and beech pleached trees anchored and defined different spaces in the garden, giving each area its own character and sense of structure.

SEPTEMBER 2018 As well as in the grasses and herbaceous borders, the change in seasons is still reflected in these formal elements; the Beech cubes turning golden in the autumn and through the winter, contrasting with the dark green Yew hedges behind. Surrounding the pool garden, ornamental grasses such as Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ were planted in strong lines, mirroring the Yew but in a softer, more tactile way. These catch the light and keep their structure through the winter months. Long flowering and reliable flowers such as geraniums, Erigeron and anemone were selected for their prolific flowering. Perennials such as Achillea and Veronicastrum and shrubs such as hydrangeas were chosen not only for the flowers through the summer, but also for their valuable winter seedheads.

Special requirements The client was keen to dress the terraces in a similar way to the internal rooms. Farlam & Chandler carefully selected beautiful furniture and cushions, each with its own character for each area of the garden. These finishing elements make the garden feel welcoming and remain outside all year round to give an extended sense of outdoor living. Handmade pots were also selected, bringing a sculptural element to the spaces. Planted up with seasonal plants, they extend the flowering season and create carefully positioned focal points.

his terraced garden was dark and dated with retaining walls which closed in on the house leaving very little space and light. Designer Robert Hughes was asked to transform the space to match the newly built property. The clients and their young family needed a space they could all enjoy together which was low maintenance and practical, with robust materials that could withstand the odd crayon and spilt drop of ketchup. A connection with the interior of the property and a natural flow from inside to out was important, as well as a space to barbecue and dine whilst the children play. Design and build The scheme was very much determined by the topography and form of the existing garden and the available budget. Concentrating the budget on the key areas and using high-quality materials, www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Robert transformed the garden into a chic, luxurious family space. The concept was to create a simple, geometric space with bold lines and few materials to keep the aesthetic minimalist and elegant. In order to make the most of what little room there was available, Robert decided it made sense to push the retaining walls back and install a built-in bench to maximise on the space. The client already had a beautifully planted garden which was well looked after by her gardener. Although they had to lose a few plants

when Robert reduced the size of the borders, Robert was able to recycle and replant many of the existing perennials, shrubs and grasses. A major excavation took place in the first week or two of the project, removing all the earth and some bedrock up to the top level, around the side of the house and all the way around and down to the front. A tight and exhausting challenge for the landscapers. A new retaining wall as well as a new staircase were built, immediately opening up the garden and creating a more useable space. The floating bench was key to saving as much space as possible whilst remaining uncluttered. To create the effect and retain the structural integrity, steel angles were cantilevered into the wall and fixed to a

concrete anchor behind the blockwork. A timber frame was fixed to the steel and the bench was dressed in 20mm cedar boards. To avoid unsightly storage boxes or an ugly shed, a small cedar clad shed was created in a difficult covered area with chalk board doors to encourage the children to draw on them instead of the rendered walls.

Challenges The major challenge, apart from the valiant effort to remove the sheer volumes of waste from an awkward site, was working with such limited space and imposing existing features and using them to their advantage.

Materials The materials were all sourced from a range of reputable suppliers including Millboard for the ground level decking and Greensquares for the porcelain paving. The Pot company supplied the striking black wall hung fire, whilst Silva Timber supplied the cedar which was used to create the table, benches and the cladding which was cleverly bent around the existing curved retaining wall.

Robert has been creating gardens for more than 10 years. Inuenced by the natural landscape as well as modern architecture and design, Robert uses contrasting traditional and contemporary materials in bold and simple ways to create his award-winning gardens. www.roberthughesgardendesign.co.uk

he house was an entirely new build surrounded by waterlogged grass and paving. When first approached by the client, they had simple requests – some raised planters, a few features, and not much else. However, working collaboratively with the clients to help them realise the potential of their space, Ben Barras completely transformed the surrounding area into a luxury extension of the indoors. The garden was essentially revamped like-for-like, with a redevelopment of what was already there. There was a path up to the front door and another path around the house, and some natural lawn. The path was replaced with some new imported paving, and artificial grass either side. With the addition of centre bay trees (half-standard) coming up the centre and lighting for nighttime, the impressive www.prolandscapermagazine.com

result resembles an aesthetic comparable to that of a wedding aisle. It was pitched to the clients that instead of making minor changes, the entire plot could be revamped. This was to include new paving, new planters, new seating areas, an outdoor kitchen, and several extra features at the end of the garden. The bottom of the plot was completely waterlogged and swamp like, so soft planting with pebbles and gravel were used to help drain the water. From there it was suggested that they could have a split-form granite driveway, and after falling in love with the product they agreed to have the rest of the area done. Southern-based company, Caribbean Blinds supplied outdoor luxury pods. Following a consultation he worked around the team to install the pods. The clients also sourced

Planting The area required plants that could tolerate heavy water due to the amount present in the soil, so the decision was made to plant hydrangeas and ferns. Around the planters Buxus balls were selected to give a modern look and for low maintenance. Two bay trees were planted on the far side. Several cordylines were also planted down one side, but they became very damaged in the wind during the winter months. However, having fallen in love with them, the client decided they are worth the expense of keeping them and replacing them every year. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 115

Challenges The team were unlucky with the weather, working through one of the worst winters that Ben has ever experienced. The weather, combined with the fact that it was a new build that was built up-ground, meant there was a lot of excess water which caused the ground to be overly soft and heavy machinery to sink. Furthermore, the clients wanted to preserve the 40m long driveway – the only way in and out of the back garden – and prevent damage caused by mud. Each day the team had to cover the driveway with plyboards just to get the machinery in and out. Also, as the clients wanted continued use of the driveway, it was only whilst they were away on holiday for a three-week period in the middle of the build that the team could redevelop it. This was before the garden had been completed, which wasn’t ideal. However, the team overcame the challenge and delivered a product that the clients are delighted with to this day.

SMALL BUT BEAUTIFUL AYEGARDENING LTD A small urban garden design in Weybridge, Surrey creates the illusion of space while keeping maintenance to a minimum

A

yegardening were tasked with the job of creating a low maintenance garden that would look good all year round, as the clients spend a considerable time abroad. The clients’ original garden was very bland with box hedges that had blight, and the lawn was suffering as a nearby drey of squirrels chewed up pine cones and littered the area.

Brief Ayegardening spent a lot of time with the clients perfecting the design. As keen gardeners, the clients had seen a gazebo at RHS Chelsea Flower Show the year before and wanted to incorporate this into the design. Although the house features wood flooring, the clients did not want an outside deck as they don’t have the time to maintain one. As a solution, Ayegardening proposed using wood effect porcelain tiles instead of real wood. Having spent a lot of money on caring for their previous lawn – which remains infested with moss – they clients also opted for artificial grass, as it is low maintenance and can be swept to keep clean.

The build The first stage was to strip the garden back completely, removing the hedges – except for two trees – the lawn and patio. As the garden is located on a slope, Ayegardening retained part of this with a brick wall and used it as a sunken gazebo area, in which the clients later placed a fire pit. Decorative pebbles and boulders were used around the edges of the lawn as informal paths to benches and part of the patio. Lighting was installed to light up the garden at night, so the clients could enjoy the outdoor space when entertaining friends and family. The paving was sourced from London Stone – a cinder porcelain tile was chosen for the main patio and to match this a tumbled black sandstone was chosen for the side path. The key feature and inspiration for this garden

DURING BUILD is the wrought iron gazebo found at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Special requirements To accommodate their need for low maintenance, tiles were used instead of decking alongside artificial grass. Ayegardening also installed irrigation with a timer so that the plants would be looked after whenever the clients are absent. Challenges The main challenge which Ayegardening faced was the lack of space. There was limited space to store materials in the garden, and gated access with a narrow gateway meant that the

logistics of organising materials was challenging. For the construction of the garden, a digger was needed which Ayegardening only managed to fit through the gate by millimetres. Aside from the space issue, wildlife also proved problematic during the build. Squirrels were an issue; Ayegardening enlisted the help of Renée Canter of The Girl Who Gardens, to design a suitable planting plan, using plants that would not be eaten by the squirrels. Shade in the garden also proved problematic as there were very large scots pines. This lack of natural sunlight in the garden also prompted the decision to choose a porcelain patio and artificial grass.

ocated in Staffordshire, The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) is the UK’s year-round centre of remembrance. The 150 acre site forms part of the National Forest and contains 30,000 maturing trees and more than 330 memorials. Increasing visitor numbers prompted the development of a master plan which included the building of a new Remembrance Centre and the refurbishment of the Armed Forces Memorial (AFM). These improvements aimed to transform the site into a place of global significance, with the NMA able to accommodate greater numbers while providing a space for reflection, remembrance and celebration of life. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 121

Project background The NMA was established in 1997 on reclaimed quarry workings between the River Trent and the Tame, in Alrewas, Staffordshire. The arboretum was originally conceived in 1994 by Commander David Childs CBE who wished to create a national site of remembrance. Following its opening in 2001, the NMA saw an unprecedented growth in visitor numbers from 12,000 to more than 300,000 by 2009. This was largely due to the opening of the Armed Forces Memorial (AFM) in 2008 which established the NMA as the UK’s principal site of remembrance. This striking stone monument records the names of all service

personnel who have been killed on duty or as a result of terrorism. Over this time, the NMA’s visitor demographic also changed with more young people and families visiting the site. For many, the main reason for visiting was to pay respect to those who have lost their lives in the service of the public, but for others, it was about exploring the natural landscape and gaining a personal understanding of remembrance. Today the NMA is independently run with support from The Royal British Legion and attracts almost 400,000 visitors every year. Every November hundreds of people gather here for the Armistice Day Service. This increase in visitor numbers and a change in demographic provided the impetus for the creation of the Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 121

OCTOBER PORTFOLIO 2018 NMA’s long-term plan and masterplan. The new Remembrance Centre was the culmination of years of collaboration between the NMA and Fira. Designed with great care and empathy, the project was highly complex with consultation required with two clients, military and civilian stakeholders and donors. Fira was commissioned in early 2009 to prepare a masterplan for the development on its existing site and to plan for its future expansion.

PROJECT DETAILS Project value £18.7m Build time 10 months Size of project 2.58 ha

The brief Fira’s philosophy was to create a place which was befitting of a place of national remembrance, that was calm, dignified and uplifting. The plan identified the need for a more engaging and informative visitor experience,

to provide better circulation and to make better use of the existing buildings. Importance was placed on the need for the buildings to relate to the arboretum, making the synthesis of landscape and architecture pivotal to the success of the project. The landscape together with the building needed to act as an introduction to the arboretum and serve as an orientation for visitors.

The design During the early design stages, it became evident that the car park was key to improving the visitor experience and a ‘light touch’ intervention was included in the project. The entrance to the site was redesigned in collaboration with Glenn Howells Architects. As the site was due to undergo major disruption

BEFORE during the construction of the new Remembrance Centre, the opportunity was taken to refurbish the existing AFM at the same time. Apart from essential maintenance to stonework, other improvements to the monument included a new stone-paved surface, drainage improvements, upgraded pathways and lighting. As the Remembrance Centre was partially funded by donation it was important that the project was delivered within budget. The project also had to be delivered on time as the site is

OCTOBER 2018 used to host various annual events as well as royal visits. The development placed trees at the heart of the design, and this was a key factor in connecting the built development with the landscape. Drawing soft landscape closer to the building created stronger visual and physical connections with the arboretum where it can be used to frame views, define space and assist with wayfinding. The centre piece of the project is Heroes’ Square and the Boyes Garden, which sweep gently to the level of Millennium Avenue, physically connecting the building to the arboretum. Materials used include Yorkstone paving, walling and setts, timber bench tops and cast-iron grilles. Heroes Square features commemorative paviours, engraved with cap badges or crests of the Royal Navy, the British Army, the Royal Air Force and City Livery Companies. The paving was placed according to Battle Honours grouped around the trees.

Community and Schools development

An unwelcoming playground at a Portsmouth school is transformed into an accessible and functional space

P

ortchester Community School needed their central courtyard to be renovated to meet the needs of pupils with a range of physical special needs – including wheelchair users. The central courtyard is at the heart of the school, but due to sustained wear of the surfacing and the passing of time the area had become tired and uninviting to the pupils. Scandor Landscape Contractors were commissioned to create a low maintenance, attractive and hard-wearing space which whilst accessible for wheelchair users also provided an element of challenge and fun.

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 125

Build The first stage of the project was clearance. This involved removing the hard features whilst also retaining some existing paving and trees. The existing hard landscaping consisted of non-permeable tarmac and concrete. On completion of the formation works, a range of new surfaces were installed directly by the company’s staff rather than by subcontractors. The new surfaces included artificial grass and resin bound surfaces – aluminium and concrete edgings were also installed. The artificial grass areas were gently mounded so that wheelchairs could pass over them, providing an element of fun for the pupils.

Scandor worked closely with the client on the construction methods and gave advice about how costs could be saved from the outset – this continued throughout the project. Examples of this include reducing the areas of excavation where artificial grass was being laid. This was achieved by using a rubber shock pad laid onto the existing tarmac surface, saving labour and disposal costs. Challenges The first challenge Scandor Landscape Contractors faced was ensuring that all works proceeded safely as there was limited access to the works area. A clearly defined haulage route was agreed upon, and the appropriately sized machinery was chosen. Secondly, the courtyard area contained assorted services, which had to be identified, marked and exposed by hand digging, and then worked around safely. One of the other site constraints was the safety route which opened out onto the courtyard from the fire doors, as it

126 PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 126

had to be maintained at all times. The existing established trees also had to be protected and worked around to ensure no damage was done. The water from the roofs had been taken to a soakaway but this had become ineffective due to blockages and collapsing pipes. Consequently, there was an issue with excess water in the area at times of high rainfall. To overcome the drainage issues the scheme incorporated a large soakaway and permeable surfaces. This proved to be a significant challenge of the project. The initial plan was to dig down to the permeable chalk which was expected to be found at 3m deep. The water table was established at approximately 3m deep and so further excavations were carried out reaching 4.5m, but the chalk was never reached. The porosity of the surface became critical to the success of the project. The excavated areas were backfilled with clean porous aggregate. All the surplus excavated material had to be removed from site and the importing of the aggregate accessed all along a restricted route.

Outcome The project has transformed the central courtyard and the school are very pleased with the result. A particular success of the project was the specific design of the undulating surfaces, born during the design process involving the school and undertaken by Hampshire County Council’s landscape architect. The pupils who use wheelchairs enjoy travelling between and over the shallow artificial grass mounds. The new quad is hugely popular with students and staff and is a busy meeting place at breaks and lunchtimes – numerous outdoor events continue to be held in the area. The school’s many wheelchair users report that the new quad design has created a much safer and more interesting experience than the previous tired concrete surfaces. This project also earned Scandor a BALI award. Upon reflection of the task and award David Brew, Scandor’s managing director, said: “We are delighted to have secured this prestigious BALI award for the work at Portchester Community School. The wide range of materials and surfaces installed within the inaccessible location by our highly skilled, directly employed staff is a recognition of their abilities and I am very proud of what they have achieved.”

FARMHOUSE PWP LANDSCAPE PWP Landscape transforms the gardens of a 100-year-old farmhouse in Askwith, enhancing habitats and reusing materials

F

rom the outset, the client approached PWP Landscapes with a brief that the design had to fit in with the traditional 100-year-old farmhouse it surrounds whilst improving the aesthetics of the front of the house. Being an exposed site with fantastic views, shelter had to be created so the garden could be enjoyed throughout the year whilst retaining the views over the valley. Finally, as the client is an ecologist there was a brief to create and www.prolandscapermagazine.com

enhance habitats and to use and recycle materials already on site as much as possible. The project After a comprehensive design process a final design was agreed upon and work started in August 2017. There was around a month of groundworks including manually sorting through all the reusable material on site. This included around 80 tonnes of stone from previous work and excavations, found and sorted ready

for re-use in the new walls. Spoil from the excavations was used in the creation of the new levels and terraces, meaning that nothing was taken away from the site. PWP Landscapes design ethos was to mainly use the same stone throughout the 1 View over slab-rock pond back to house 2 Natural pond enhanced by large rock pieces 3 Drystone wall and pillar with reclaimed oak pergola 4 Riven stone sett patio with Yorkshire stone surround Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 129

project but in different finishes. Around the pond, they created a slab rock rockery using the raw unprocessed stone to give a natural feel around the pond – which was previously created by diverting a culvert through the garden and is now a haven for wildlife. The curving sweeping drystone retaining walls were broken up with large pieces of slab rock worked into the wall, creating seating and follies whilst also being a fantastic habitat for creepy crawlies. The feature wall and pillar at the front creates shelter from the wind whilst also breaking the garden into rooms so the fantastic views can be enjoyed. An orchard and meadow were created to enhance wildlife habitats. As the garden gets closer to the house, the stone gets more finished and worked. New Riven Yorkstone, from the same quarry, was 130 PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 130

used at the front of the house with traditional Yorkshire stone cobbles to be in keeping with the farmhouse. PWP Landscapes widened the entrance with drystone walls and pillars to frame the house. A reclaimed oak pergola with weeping wysteria creates an entrance to the side garden. Sawn stone and sett details were used on the terraced patio areas to the side of the house to give a slightly more contemporary feel nearer the house. The planting around the house comprises mainly of ornamental grasses, Pennisetum, Miscanthus, Molinia and Carex buchananii, to reflect on the edges and grass in the surrounding fields. The grasses are inter planted with delicate flowers to add a splash of colour and to attract insects. There is an area for an orchard where five different species of fruit trees

were planted including Apple ‘cox’s orange pippin’ and Plum ‘victoria’ – these were planted amongst a native meadow mix. With interest everywhere you turn – dramatic level changes, cascading water, hidden seating areas, from bold statement features to tiny bespoke details – the clients were extremely happy with the finished scheme. Challenges Due to the site location, and a mile-long narrow road and drive, getting large deliveries of materials was testing. Everything had to come on a 10 tonne lorry instead of the standard 18 tonne. The site also had copious underground streams and water from the surrounding hills and fields, so numerous land drains were put in and diverted into the pond. There was shared access with the www.prolandscapermagazine.com

DURING neighbouring farm so this meant the main drive had to be kept free. Over 100m of land drain were put in to channel the ground water, the culvert under the garage that goes into the stream was re-joined and fixed to ensure the water flowed through the site properly. All existing topsoil was stock piled, the subsoil was moved and used to create the terraces, then topsoil spread over the top. The job was very labour intensive as a lot of the materials were already on site, there were weeks of finding, sorting and coursing stone throughout the project. The manoeuvring of the slab rock was particularly difficult especially when working approximately 2m below the digger. A lot of the work was carried out during the autumn and winter and due to the exposed location, this was particularly testing at times. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

new mixed-use development for Derwent Valley London in Old Street, designed by AHMM, was completed last year. BBUK undertook soft landscape design proposals for the ground floor courtyard, and new public route between City Road and Mallow Street, through Old Street Yard. The route opens into a courtyard, with a cafe, planting and lawn area forming a new public space in this part of London, sheltered from the noise and fumes of the Old Street roundabout. BBUK worked closely with the architects on the layout and form of the planters, creating intimate seating areas spaces throughout the courtyard. The surfaces were paved with recycled blue stable bricks, with a boardwalk www.prolandscapermagazine.com

signaling the boulevard between City Road and Mallow Street. Evergreen oak trees were planted at the base of the tower in order to give year-round interest, as well as to attenuate the wind from the tower. BBUK worked closely with the engineers to ensure that the trees provide optimum wind attenuation; it was agreed that the trees would provide maximum impact if crowns were maintained at a six-meter diameter. ensures they do not grow too big for the space. The trees were under-planted with a range of native and native-in-character flowering and berry-producing plants, visually enhancing the space and boosting the local ecology. As many of the plant species specified are deciduous, they are all planted within an enclosure of low box hedge; the plants chosen will flower from early spring through to autumn. The seasonal planting gives the space variety and animation throughout the year. A generous lawn is provided for sitting out during the summer months; the southern half of this is in shade through the majority of the year, so required a robust shade-tolerant lawn mix. The northern end of the lawn, which receives more sunlight, is planted with a species-rich turf that further adds to the site’s biodiversity. 134 PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

his vibrant garden is set in one of the most idyllic areas of rural Norfolk, nestled on a hill overlooking the village of Morston and out to the sea. The garden is bordered on three sides with shelter belt woodland, which happens to give the most spectacular display of bluebells and protects the garden from wind. Brief Tamara Bridge Garden Designs was asked to breathe new life and colour into a well-established garden that had become overgrown and had lost its sparkle. The client wanted a new and refreshing approach to the garden, the planting was to be designed to encourage excursions around the garden with mild changes needed to create the illusion of a larger space. A desire to pick a vase of flowers and foliage every week of the year focused the planting to provide something to enjoy and something to look forward to – scent and colour were essential components. Design and build The design work involved long afternoons of pouring over books, catalogues and bulb lists with the client, whose passion for plants is second to none. Tamara Bridge Garden Designs started selecting mature trees and shrubs to retain, remove or prune in December. Some borders were to be removed entirely, starting from scratch, but others required a more sympathetic approach. It was important to www.prolandscapermagazine.com

retain some of the more unusual or characterful plants to bridge the gap between the new planting and to ensure that it looked as if it could have always been there. The setting out stage was extremely important to the success of the garden. The planting plans offer a guide, but once on site it is a lot easier to see the planting and therefore ensure that the effect will work. Tamara Bridge Garden Designs spent a few days arranging the plants, going back to key windows and view points to check that the layering effect of the planting worked from these angles. Certain areas of the garden hardscape were tweaked to make the most of the new planting. Focal points were readjusted and refined and a new courtyard garden was created which focuses on texture, form and shades of grey and green to contrast with bursts of pink, silver and blue. A focal point was needed at the end of the new wildflower meadow so an existing curved stone bench was relocated, and a small paved area with gaps for planting was created. The bench is surrounded by white hyacinths in the spring. The Mediterranean courtyard needed to be wheelchair accessible, so Tamara Bridge Garden Designs used a self-binding gravel with sandstone set details. The main sculptural element of the garden is the planting, which is used to frame the bespoke garden window set into a trellis clothed in Trachelospermum, Rosa ‘Alberic Barbier’ and Ceanothus, designed by George Carter. This delightful feature links the courtyard with the walled garden. All shrubs, trees and topiary were sourced through The Romantic Garden Nursery in Swannington. Howard Nurseries in Diss, Edgefield Nurseries just down the road from the garden, and North Hill Nurseries supplied for remaining plants.

Some structure in the garden was provided by new garden features. Repeating pots or obelisks help anchor the soft perennial planting in a similar way to shrubs, while offering greater flexibility for seasonal changes. Muntons obelisks were a happy combination of elegance and casual but Tamara Bridge Garden Designs did add a little gilding. Pots will have tulips in for the spring, agapanthus and annuals for the summer and occasionally winter evergreens. These were planted in pot liners, making it easy to swap displays over. Challenges In the early part of February when most of the planting had been removed and Tamara Bridge Garden Designs was involved in the most chaotic part of the build, it was discovered that a friend of the clients was to be married that summer in June, in the garden. Up until her recent visit to the garden, she had been unaware that the garden was to be replanted. After the initial shock from both parties, Tamara

Throughout the design process Tamara Bridge Garden Designs had been working closely with the client and the gardener appointed to take over the scheme upon completion. Unfortunately, the gardener was unable to take up this role which created a problem as far as the June wedding was concerned. To save the day, Tamara decided to stay on one day a week for a season to train one of her own team to undertake the maintenance. This proved to be a successful scheme and there is now a team of three looking after the garden. Bridge Garden Designs started working from the date of the wedding backwards to ensure the garden was looking its absolute best in time. Fortunately, many perennials were planned to be incorporated for the first few years and so there wasn’t much need to worry about the overall impact, but a few more plants were added to the order for the key areas of the garden.

CITY RETREAT MAYLIM In London’s Rathbone Square a tranquil residential garden offers a calming retreat away from the bustling West End

athbone Square is one of central London’s largest mixed-use developments. The land was previously occupied by Royal Mail, as the location of their central sorting and delivery office. The 1,800m2 publicly-accessible garden lies at the heart of this new residential and commercial development designed by Make Architects for client Great Portland Estates. Located close to London’s popular shopping and theatre districts, Rathbone Square offers respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Designed by Landscape Architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman, Rathbone Square is sensitive to its surroundings. It has been designed to engage visitors and elevate the sense of space. The square now unifies the collection of buildings, creating cross-site pedestrian routes. The design and final landscape retains the positive characteristics of the surrounding

area and complements the architecture of the new development. Design and build The incorporation of water was a major feature and priority for the design of the central garden. Located close to each of the main entrances are two water tables which reflect the natural setting of the garden and encourage the public to explore the space within. The sculpting of the stone resembles water grasses and reeds simulating the appearance of flowing water. This creates a relaxing and soothing ambience. Maylim. This granite was selected after a thorough and extensive sampling process, in which a clear range was agreed. Maylim completed the full design of the paving layout to co-ordinate the paving pattern with raised planters and edgings. The size of the paving elements at the entrances was made larger to match the adjacent highway pavements. This gradually reduces to a smaller size towards the centre of the square. The palette of natural stone selected for the central garden is appropriate to both function and aesthetics, contrasting yet complementing the granite used for the water rills and planters. The design of the contoured curved bench made from Camaru by Woodscapes was achieved by using innovative 3D modelling technology. This bespoke seating comprises of individual slats which seamlessly graduate upward to create a backrest. The bench was delivered in sections and fixed to a concrete structure over a stainless steel angle using reinforced concrete to hold in place. Maylim’s project team refined the design and construction of the surface water drainage system, minimising the need for access boxes and reducing the quantity of visible stainless steel at the surface. Maylim also designed a waterproofing system comprising of all building interfaces including skylights, as well as pre-cast elements and a ceramic archway with 142 PORTFOLIO 2018 / Pro Landscaper

penetration detailing. In addition, they designed the detailing around all penetrations, including drainage outlets, water features and irrigation pipework. Maylim’s project team installed two drainage mat systems for both hard and soft landscaping elements. Both systems were integrated into the surface water drainage system with an extended gully connection piece. Maylim installed concrete sub-base including all

expansion and movement joints to form a level surface. Consideration and care was taken not to exceed allowable loadings on the structural podium slab. The mixed-used development which surrounds the square comprises of six to eight storey buildings. Accordingly, a great deal of thought and process went into the design and development of the soft landscaping elements, to make sure that they were suitable for the planting conditions.

DECEMBER 2018

DURING Across the scheme there are seven large raised planters which vary in size and design. Over 75m2 of linear granite cladding was used to build the planters. Due to the size and weight of each individual unit, the planters were installed using a 20ft mobile city crane. After installation, the planters were clad in Canadian ‘Picasso’ granite. The water channel weirs were then integrated within the planters. The depth of the planters allows for sufficient amounts of soil for cherry and magnolia trees, box hedging and understory planting. Initially, the planters were proposed to be made with reinforced concrete structures. However, because of programme restraints, Maylim issued a contractor’s proposal to change the structures to precast units. Maylim led the selection and off-site maintenance of the semi-mature trees. These were all maintained away from site for two years. During this time, they were planted within air pots that allowed them to be transported to site during the summer months when they were planted at their final destination. Within the raised granite planters perennial species were planted to add softness in contrast to the hard granite and stone elements of the scheme. The hard landscaping complements the soft with a pathway gently curving around the central lawn to meet the edge of the building. Maylim constructed raised beds, incorporating metal edging, to create a deep growing medium for semi-mature trees and deep-rooted plants. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Portfolio supplement 2018.indd 143

Private residential garden Maylim’s work on the scheme also included the private residential garden. In contrast to the public central garden, the scale of the residential garden is much more compact and provides an area where residents can relax and unwind. Maylim’s remit on this part of the project included waterproofing, insulation, drainage mat works as well as build ups. The neutral palette of natural stone used for the garden is appropriate for both function and aesthetic. Maylim installed block work retaining structures, which were clad in Azul Picasso granite, in line with the public realm. The granite was used to create different levels for planting, lawns and paved areas. Granite was also used for both the paving and the dividing walls. The design and development faced numerous constraints. The space has an irregular site boundary and is located above a basement storey – both challenging aspects that Maylim had to work around – the garden itself could only be accessed through the residential building development. Completing insulation and waterproofing whilst working on a live site was logistically challenging. Throughout the duration of these works Maylim had to maintain access for other trades as well as provide storage for materials. 6 Contoured timber bench 7 View over CNC cut table-top water feature

his award-winning scheme, designed by Acres Wild and delivered by Outdoor Creations involved the redevelopment of a large, existing garden following a major extension and remodelling of the client’s home. The brief was to create a garden that seamlessly integrated with the house – better connecting the house and terrace with the lawns and the existing swimming pool – and to provide a more generous space for entertaining. Build The clients original garden was truncated by a beech hedge, overgrown shrub borders and a www.prolandscapermagazine.com

huge Victorian greenhouse which dominated and blocked the view from the house to the wider garden. The glazing and bricks of the original greenhouse were carefully dismantled and reclaimed so that a smaller version could be incorporated into the new scheme as a feature beyond the swimming pool. A new, potager style, kitchen garden was developed, blending well with the existing orchard and sitting comfortably in an area of the garden that was previously unused. Following the construction of the new greenhouse, a fruit cage was added, raised beds for vegetable growing, separated by neat, Breedon gravel paths and a brick-laid terrace,

dressed with large containers and pots. Significant provision for utilities had to be made as part of the groundworks. There was significant cabling for lighting, power and Cat6 cabling to the pool house, as well as an automated irrigation system from an underground rainwater harvesting tank to the new planting areas, mains and grey water supply to numerous standpipes around the garden. A gas supply was also provided from the house to the client’s new fire table that Outdoor Creations installed. Reclaimed materials from the site were incorporated where possible, re-using Yorkstone paving and some of the client’s natural stone walling. The paving was carefully lifted and re-used beneath the pergola, creating an attractive, rustic terrace providing a spot to sit and relax in a secluded area of the garden. Planting was refreshed throughout the scheme and new planting areas now incorporate the client's love of Mediterranean style plants with clipped box lavender, Alliums, 1 Sawn sandstone main terrace with sett detail 2 Intermediate relaxing terrace with gas fire pit 3 Ornamental grasses soften the terrace 4 Sawn sandstone mixes with natural stone walling Pro Landscaper / PORTFOLIO 2018 145

scented roses and ornamental grasses, providing year round interest. The existing shrub borders were either reorganised where appropriate as significant existing plant numbers were reused, or replaced where the design necessitated their removal. A section of the handsome 9ft mature beech hedge needed to be moved to accommodate the new design and this was successfully lifted and replanted over the winter. A large, existing bespoke oak pergola was carefully dismantled and rebuilt in a new, more appropriate position, framing the view through to one of the upper lawns. In addition, some significant, large and particularly fragile pieces of sculpture had to be carefully lifted and relocated to their new positions within the garden. Of particular sentimental value were some pieces of wrought iron railings and gates that had been bequeathed to the client by his late father. These were sensitively restored by

Outdoor Creations’ metalsmith and incorporated within a revised design layout to feature within the garden, creating defined access points in three areas of the garden.

Judges comments This garden scheme won the Principal Award at the BALI National Landscape Awards in 2017 where the judges commented: "Comprising the complete refurbishment of an extensive existing garden, this fantastic scheme has been executed with care, passion and thought. The changes in levels are seamless, the planting exceptional, and the detailing throughout is beautiful, including where reclaimed stone walling and paving has been used. The contractor worked closely with the

DURING client to introduce elements that help to make the garden work better for the entire family and the result is a garden where every aspect blends perfectly. This is, quite simply, a lovely scheme that reflects the excellent client/ contractor relationship."
