AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS HOARE Chris Hoare speaks to us about self employment and running his team
S
o the last month of 2015 is upon us and with it, the final Pro Arb of the year. It’s been a great first year for us and we’ve firmly established ourselves as the leading trade publication in this market. Thank you to all of our contributors for sharing their expert advice, opinions and technical knowledge. The inaugural FutureArb event was an outstanding success. Thank you to our speakers, exhibitors and visitors for their time and contributions. It’s good to see so many representatives of the industry under one roof benefiting from each other’s expertise – and great to check out the new kit on offer, too. Turn to page 10 for our pictorial round-up, and keep reading Pro Arb for details of next year’s event as they emerge. On to December’s Pro Arb. We recently conducted a reader survey to test the state of the arboriculture industry and the results look promising, with the majority of respondents reporting a positive outlook. See page 12 for details. Jonathan Hazell is on page 13 looking at health and safety arrangements. Glyn Percival
and Emma Schaffert offer their advice on Seiridium canker on page 15, and new to the technical section this month is Katie Hateley of Fox Medics talking about first aid – her article on managing a catastrophic bleed could save a life. Southampton-based Christopher Hoare is the subject of our interview on page 19 and Guy Baxter of AWA Consultants is our featured apprentice on page 22. A favourite of mine, this month's Toolbox on page 26 features Surreybased Burleys showing off their kit and telling us why they’ve chosen it. Not forgetting our Arb Kit Special on page 32, with all the best new products released in 2015. We’ll be back with more great features and kit in January 2016, in the meantime, have a lovely Christmas.

THREATENED PEAR TREE CROWNED ENGLAND’S TREE OF THE YEAR One of the country’s oldest and largest wild pear trees has been chosen by the public as England’s Tree of the Year for 2015. The Cubbington Pear Tree near the village of Cubbington in Warwickshire sits on the proposed route of phase one of HS2 and could be lost once construction gets underway. The pear tree received over
a third of more than 10,000 votes cast by members of the public in the contest organised
by the Woodland Trust and supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The tree joins the Suffragette Oak from Scotland, Peace Tree in Northern Ireland and ‘Survival at the cutting edge’ from Wales in the European Tree of the Year contest in February 2016.
register, which now counts 811 pests and diseases threatening trees and plants. While ash dieback disease, or Chalara, has been given a score of 100 out of 125 as a relative risk, ash borer disease registers the maximum 125. The beetle, which is di cult to detect, could arrive in EU countries via imported firewood, said Spence. We have identified the risk pathways of [how it could arrive in Britain]. We are worried about firewood coming through the Ukraine or Baltic countries near Russia,” she said.
Treework Environmental Practice has been chosen by Aldwyck Housing Group to carry out tree risk surveys and manage tree works on more than 300 sites on its estate across the east and south east of England. Matt Searle (Treework principal arboricultural planning consultant) said: “I am delighted that in this competitive tender process our bid was selected for both our high quality and cost effective offer. This contract builds on our excellent relationships with housing associations across the UK, developed through regular reviews and dialogue with our clients.” The contract includes recording tree information onto Treework’s tree management software (MyTrees) enabling Aldwyck Housing Group to proactively manage tree related risk and nuisance. Following completion of the survey, Treework’s expert consultants will use the MyTrees Tree Works Management system to manage the tree surgery contract so that Aldwyck Housing Group receives good quality and value.

GLENDALE WELCOMES NEW ARBORICULTURE MANAGER IN KENT
ConFor (Confederation of Forest Industries) has joined forces with The Woodland Trust to urge the government to raise its ambitions and ensure tens of millions more trees are planted in England during this parliament and beyond. Glendale has appointed Ryan Stanbrook as arboriculture contract manager in the south east. Based at the company’s depot in Sevenoaks, Ryan will be responsible for growing the business in Kent’s private sector market as well as managing the site’s current arboriculture contracts with Phoenix Community Housing Trust and Southwark Council. Ryan joins Glendale after 18 months working for London Underground as a site manager responsible for large groups of arborists cutting back and maintaining trees and vegetation around high voltage railway tracks.

NORTHERN IRELAND FORESTRY SCHEMES GET £17.4M The Northern Ireland Executive has launched three Forestry Grant Schemes under the Rural Development Programme 20142020, which is part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD). The Forest Expansion Scheme will encourage larger woodland planting to increase long-term storage of carbon in trees and counter climate change. The Forest Protection Scheme is aimed at assisting woodland owners to restore immature woodland affected by tree diseases such as Chalara
ash dieback. The Woodland Investment Grant will support removal of non-native and invasive exotic species such as laurel and rhododendron. Launching the schemes, Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “I have allocated up to £17.4m to support woodland expansion and the sustainable management of existing woodland, which is su cient to create 1, 00ha of new woodland and sustain approximately 4,000ha created under previous programmes. This will make a small but positive contribution towards my aim of achieving 12% woodland cover by the middle of this century.” It’s also hoped they will provide publicly accessible forests suitable for wildlife and for timber production. www.northernireland.gov.uk

He brings with him specialist skills in railway tree management and arboriculture around high voltage tracks. Ryan said: “Working for a large company like Glendale really interested me as there is a lot of room for progression and they work to a high standard. “My main goal for the first few months, and for the rest of my career at Glendale, is business development and bringing my contract forward in a profitable direction. The most substantial challenge the contract faces is moving into the private sector in the local area and I intend to take a head on approach.” www.glendale-services.co.uk

PREVENTING PROFESSIONAL ISOLATION
On Friday 13 November more than 40 delegates met in Cambridge for a meeting organised by ICF, the ICF East England Regional Group and East Anglian Tree and Landscape O cers Group EATALOG . Three themes emerged from Establishing and Retaining Quality Trees in the Urban Landscape – fragmentation, isolation and professionalism. Speakers and delegates agreed that there was often a fragmented approach
SOIL IDENTIFICATION FOR TREE SELECTION The Institute of Chartered Foresters ICF and Forest Research ran a successful two-day Site Recognition and Tree Species Selection training course at the Forest of Dean in October. The course offered practical insights into methods for site surveying, restocking and design planning. The two days were largely field based, which gave participants a sound understanding of soil identification and site classification techniques. Day one focused on soil formation and soil
characteristics, climatic and topographical site factors and soil sampling techniques on site . Day two centred on the Ecological Site Classification ESC system, with the afternoon’s site visits building on day one’s field work. ICF is in discussions on hosting a similar course in 2016.

Isolation of arboriculturists is increasingly becoming an issue in impoverished local authorities and Sharon Hosegood posed the question: How can we achieve a cultural shift to elevate the position of Tree O cer One solution offered by Stuart Glen was to join the ICF and pursue Chartered Arboriculturist status.

BUSINESS TIPS
ARRANGEMENTS FOR
HEALTH AND SAFETY Jonathan Hazell expands upon his three-part structure for a health and safety policy, in particular, ‘the arrangements’
I
wrote last time about a health and safety policy and its generic three part structure: • the statement of intent, • the organisation and responsibilities, • the arrangements. In the first part you have set out your goal and in the second you’ve outlined who is responsible for what in order to achieve that goal. The hardest part in my experience is the final part, the arrangements. Firstly it’s an awkward concept – what is meant by ‘arrangements’, what are they and what do they look like? Quite simply the arrangements means all the guidance that you provide, in whatever style or format, to your team to help achieve the goal. The arrangements could include: • simple policy statements, for
“Whatever ‘arrangement’ you make you would be as well to record them all somewhere so you can share all the guidance with everyone all of the time”
JonHazell.indd 13
example on smoking in the workplace, • a timeline for reporting absences from work, • clear and consistent procedures on how to prepare a safe system of work, • rules on how to demonstrate that you actively manage risks in the workplace to provide a safe work environment for your team, photos of suitable tra c management setups, a owchart on how to create a safe worksite, • worked examples for an accident book or nearmiss report, • a series of drawings or photos with good practice marked with a tick and bad practice with a cross,
• a wallchart showing training and competence awards for each member of the team, • a diary to be used in conjunction with health surveillance or LOLER Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 199 or firefighting equipment. Not only will your arrangements probably all look different, the detail you provide will vary according to the audience, depending on whether it’s aimed at the senior team or the ground crew, internally or externally i.e. for your staff or for the prying eye of the auditor, the regulator or the insurer . A risk assessment for the senior team might include reference to a need to purchase the quietest machine, or the one with the lowest vibration data. The work team wouldn’t need to consider that because they are unlikely to be able to in uence what kit they use, and so their risk assessment would focus more on using that kit according to their training. Similar ideas would apply to a ‘how to’ manual – the senior management team would have one set of criteria to consider whilst the operator might simply need a photo guide to reinforce their training and experience. I remember a very good example
from a grounds maintenance contract where a photo and red cross were used to tell strimmer pilots not to go too close to the tree’s base – there’s no room for misunderstanding with that. What ultimately matters is whether what you have works and whether you can meet your obligations to inform and share knowledge in the most appropriate way. Whatever ‘arrangement’ you make you would be as well to record them all somewhere so you can share all the guidance with everyone all of the time. ABOUT JONATHAN HAZELL Jonathan Hazell’s career began on the tools with the Ealing tree gang in 1980. Senior roles in the public, charity and commercial sectors followed and in October 2011 Jonathan established his own arboricultural consultancy practice. www.jhazell.com

S
eiridium Canker is a very common disease in the United Kingdom, affecting species within the Cupressaceae family. Although three main species of Seiridium canker are reported to cause disease on Leyland cypress, Seiridium unicorne is the most commonly associated with cankers and twig dieback. Trees of all sizes and ages can be affected and if the disease is left untreated, it can severely distort and eventually kill the tree. Symptoms One of the most noticeable symptoms of Seiridium canker is reddening or browning of the foliage on one or more branches. The discolouration is usually localised, and most likely to appear in early spring although symptoms can be seen at any time of the year. The disease causes numerous elongated cankers on stems, branches and branch axils (the areas where branches join), which cause twig and branch dieback. Most of the cankers are slightly sunken, with raised margins and may be discoloured dark brown to purple. The cankers will often ooze resin
SEIRIDIUM CANKER AND TWIG DIEBACK Controlling Seridium canker in heavily infected trees can be difficult but there are steps you can take to minimise transmission and bolster resistance, say Bartlett Tree experts exudates, with the cambial tissue beneath these sites turning a reddish brown colour. The disease usually spreads until a significant portion of the tree is destroyed. Disease cycle and epidemiology The fungus over-winters in cankers on diseased trees. Environmental stress, predominantly drought, often increases infection and canker development. Seiridium cankers

enlarge up to three times faster on drought stressed trees than on irrigated ones. Spring freeze and ice injury often predisposes trees to infection. Fruiting bodies of the pathogen, called acervuli, appear on the canker as small black dots that are barely visible to the naked eye. Fungal spores are easily spread to adjacent branches of an infected tree or to other trees by water splash either from rain or irrigation. New infections occur when spores lodge in bark cracks and wounds. The fungus can also be spread on pruning tools or through infected material, often resulting in long distance spread. Infection through lenticels may occur following hot, dry weather. Control Improving tree vitality is the best defence against Seiridium canker. Due to their relatively shallow root system, plant Leyland cypresses in well cultivated, non-compacted soils to encourage plant vigour. Amend the soil if necessary. To minimize water stress, which could
exacerbate infection, apply mulch and irrigate as necessary. Removal of cankered twigs and branches could help prevent disease spread, but destroy pruned materials and disinfect pruning tools. Remove extensively damaged trees or trees that are damaged in the main trunk. Control is very di cult once trees are heavily infected and a limited number of cultivars are known to have some resistance to the disease. However recent research has shown foliar sprays and/or soil drenches of phosphite based fertilisers can reduce the incidence of disease. FIRST AID
HOW TO MANAGE A
MAJOR BLEED Cut a major artery and you could be unconscious in less than 60 seconds. Would you know how to manage a catastrophic bleed? In the first of a three-part series, Katie Hateley, paramedic and director of first aid training company FoxMedics, explains how
I
n 2011 Tom Connelly, a tree surgeon from Cambridgeshire had a near fatal incident while working with a chainsaw 50ft up a tree. He slipped onto his chainsaw and cut through a third of his neck including his jugular vein. Tom’s colleagues performed an aerial rescue that had him to the
ground in one minute and applied life-saving direct pressure to his neck. The emergency medical team from charity Magpas then used a haemostatic gauze, which causes the blood to clot. Although Tom lost three litres of blood and severely damaged his nerves, he survived to tell the tale.
Adapting first aid Managing catastrophic bleeds is not a standard part of first aid courses but there is more recognition of the need for first aid training for hazardous industries than ever before. Even the new European Resuscitation Council (ERC)
Guidelines, revised in October 2015, recognise the importance of teaching the lifesaving use of tourniquets and haemostatic agents for the management of major bleeds. The ERC guidelines state: “Use a tourniquet when direct wound pressure cannot control severe external bleeding in a limb. Training is required to ensure the safe and effective application of a tourniquet. “Use a haemostatic dressing when direct pressure cannot control severe external bleeding or the wound is in a position where direct pressure is not possible. Training is required to ensure the safe and effective application of these dressings.”
“The lifesaving capability of tourniquets has been proved time and again through the centuries”

TECHNICAL
“Managing catastrophic bleeds is not a standard part of first aid courses but there is more recognition of the need for first aid training for hazardous industries than ever” Tourniquets The principle of a tourniquet is to apply indirect pressure to a limb to stop a major external bleed. The lifesaving capability of this technique has been proved time and again through the centuries and although the first recorded use of a tourniquet to stop a catastrophic bleed was in 1674, they are thought to have been used since as far back as the Roman era. We only have to look at more recent atrocities such as the London and Boston bombings to see improvised tourniquets created
WWW.PROARBMAGAZINE.COM
Page016_First Aid.indd 17
from scarves and even neck lanyards used to stop catastrophic bleeds and thereby save lives. The first aid industry has frowned upon the employment of tourniquets for many years due to concerns about inappropriate use and the effects of prolonged application to a limb. These negatives can be ruled out with appropriate training, which will provide the knowledge and confidence needed to know when and how to use a tourniquet. If someone has had a catastrophic bleed and a tourniquet applied, hopefully
they will be in an emergency setting before prolonged use causes concern, so the lifesaving capability of a tourniquet will outweigh this risk. Haemostatic agents Haemostatic agents are a blood clotting material that when compacted into a wound creates a clot in as little as three minutes, thus stemming the ow of a catastrophic bleed. Surgeons have used haemostatic agents in the operating theatre since 1909. Over the years the blood clotting agents have advanced in composition and presentation, with more recent recognition of benefits for trauma injuries where a tourniquet is not appropriate. Guidance and training is needed to have an understanding of
how and when to use the haemostatic product as there are various types on the market. Why take risks and wait until after an incident to learn the lifesaving first aid skills that are appropriate to your hazardous industry? ABOUT KATIE HATELEY

An interview with
CHRISTOPHER HOARE CHRISTOPHER HOARE TREE SERVICES Christopher Hoare started his tree surgery company more than 20 years ago. Pro Arb spoke to him about becoming self-employed, running a 50-person arb team and why business is good right now
What is your role within the company? I’m the company director. I make sure the company runs as it should and when required I’m more than happy to muck in with the lads, in the log yard, moving plant and machinery or helping out in the office. How long have you been in the industry and when did you set the company up? I’ve been in the industry for 20 years. I started at the age of 19 as a groundsman but after three years, in 1998 I had the opportunity to
set up my own business, which I felt I was ready to take on at that time. Did you study arboriculture at college? Was it always your career of choice? No, I actually started an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, which I really didn’t like. I ended up helping my friend’s dad, who was a tree surgeon, at weekends. I finished my apprenticeship and ended up carrying out arboriculture tasks with him. Did you start your business on your own or did you employ others straight away? After working for my friend’s dad for three years, I set up on my own with one other climber. I loved being my own boss and we quickly employed a third person to work as a groundsman.
Page019_Interview.indd 19
How did you find being your own boss? I loved it. I loved the flexibility of doing what I wanted, when I wanted. I had the mindset that the harder I worked the more rewards I would get out of it. How many staff do you employ now? We’re up to 50 staff now. Do you work nationwide? When Scottish and Southern Electric had emergency call-outs we worked as far away as Scotland and had a team based up there for several weeks. We generally work within the Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire area. We are happy to travel the whole of the UK if the opportunity arises, however. You have quite a large team for this industry, how do you structure it? All our operational staff are part of a structured hierarchy and we have an office team working behind the scenes. There are four different departments across the utilities, commercial and domestic

markets. SSE is our main utilities contractor, a lot of our commercial work comes from the Forestry Commission and framework agreements with local councils. We’ve recently had Southampton City Council approach us with their work. Our domestic department is still really important, whether it is a £50 or a £5000 job. Is that how you started in this business? When I started on my own it was mainly subcontracting in the utility industry, before SSE came to us directly. This gave us the opportunity to grow the business and although SSE was a big client I wanted to expand into other areas. This is where I reinvested to build my domestic department. How does the profit split between the four sections of your business? It’s pretty even across all of it, but it depends on how much work is in each class.
“A lot of our work comes through our reputation”
So how do you go about winning your work? A lot of our work comes through our reputation. When we look at the stats each month, repeat business is always our highest score and recommendations are second. Word of mouth is very important. We do actively search for tenders but we have been going for so long now we have built up good links in the industry, the waste back to the yard! Page019_Interview.indd 20
Do you have bespoke training programmes set up for your staff? Yes absolutely. Every member of staff has an annual review where we discuss their progress and where they want to be. In our weekly management meetings we discuss the staff and their training needs at great length. We provide a lot of training and it seems someone is training every day of the week. We also have two apprentices doing level three courses at the moment, one at Sparsholt and one at Merrist Wood. We also have a consultant here who is working towards his diploma. Is it easy to find good quality staff or do you prefer to train them from scratch? A bit of both. When staff come in at a basic level it does mean that we can train them to suit the needs of the business. However, we

have many members of staff who have been in the industry a long time and arrived from other companies. At the interview stage we carry out climbing assessments and practical tests to assess their skills and competency and this helps us to develop a training plan for them. What do you think of your apprentices’ college education? Are they where you want them to be as a business owner? I think the college courses are really good and provide them with all the basic knowledge they need. When they’re not at college they come in with us to gain practical experience, which I think is vital for their development. What are the issues you’ve faced when running your business this year? As we have grown again this year, one of the biggest issues we’ve faced is ensuring that our organisation maintains the high standards that we expect across all the departments. Has this year been better than previous years? Yes, it’s definitely picked up. We seem to be busy all the time. This year has really taken off again.
share their ideas. Talking of associations, I’m also a part of the Arborists Working Group which is trying to get companies to share their positive experiences and pitfalls, which I think is a great way forward. What do you think the main industrywide issues that need to be tackled are? It would be great to shift away from the rogue traders but I don’t think it will
“We seem to be busy all the time. This year has really taken off”
Do you think people in the industry share their knowledge or do they like to keep it to themselves? I think we could all learn a lot more if we were a bit more open with each other. It seems to be an industry where people don’t want to
WWW.PROARBMAGAZINE.COM
Page019_Interview.indd 21
Do you get a lot of work through that? It’s great to see the feedback from our customers and we do get work from it, but our work comes from a combination of all our different advertising as well as word of mouth. People will check four or five different avenues before making a decision and having our reputation on Checkatrade definitely helps. What’s next for the company, will you continue the growth? Yes we definitely want to carry on growing. We’ve learnt that our growth needs to come in a sustainable way and I believe we have put the building blocks in place to see this happen. In the grand scheme of things I would like to see us become a company that is recognised nationwide. Do you think price is the most important thing in this industry? No, I think the price is an important factor, but the quality you offer is the key to longevity in this industry.
Are you predicting more of the same for 2016? I’d like to think so, yes. Do you get involved in the associations? Yes. We are a member of the Arb Association and we hold rigging workshops and events for them. We’ve just recently had former Merrist Wood lecturer Jack Kenyon carry out a visual tree assessment course here at Exbury. It was great having him down – he really knows his stuff. We also always attend the conferences when we can. If it’s not me who goes it’s a couple of my staff. We’re always trying to keep involved with the industry associations.
have received over 650 feedback scores. The great thing about schemes like this is the fact that they offer independent reviews of a company from the general public. It can’t be manipulated either as it is constantly monitored by Checkatrade.
happen any time soon. We need to promote the industry as a professional market and it should be regulated so we all work to an industry standard. There are masses of talented people who don’t get the recognition they deserve because they are tarred with the same brush as the rogue traders. Are you members of Checkatrade or anything similar? Checkatrade is a really good thing, we have been members since 2010 and our lads
What do you like to do outside of work? Spending time with my family is the most important thing to me, but aside from that my hobbies include football, skiing, golf and sailing.

GUY BAXTER AWA TREE CONSULTANTS
Trainee Arboricultural Consultant Guy Baxter tells us about his way into the industry, daily routine and future plans
Where did you go to college? I studied at Askham Bryan College to attain my level three in arboriculture and forestry. I went on to Myerscough College and completed my foundation degree. Now I am studying for a BSc in arboriculture online with Myerscough College.
GUY BAXTER, 24
TRAINEE ARBORICULTURAL CONSULTANT
Why did you choose arboriculture as your profession? I kind of stumbled into it. I was working as a gardener for a large landscape company during the school holidays and one day they needed help on the trees team. I really enjoyed it and didn’t look back.
What are the most important qualities an arborist needs? Tree identification and general arboricultural knowledge, writing skills and the ability to follow instructions and communicate with clients and colleagues. What does a typical day at work include? I get to the o ce, have a coffee and prepare a site plan using CAD. We discuss projects with senior staff or clients and then there’s site visits for tree surveys, normally BS5837 relating to trees and development but we also undertake a lot of tree risk
WHAT THE MANAGER SAYS: "Guy contacted us earlier this year as he was completing his foundation degree. I asked him over for a chat and was immediately struck by his enthusiasm. We needed someone with technical knowledge, but as a small company, it’s essential to be able to work independently and as a team player. Guy ticks all these boxes and has quickly proven himself as a key member of AWA!"

assessments. On completion of the site visit we go back to the o ce and upload the survey data onto CAD plans and manage the data in preparation for tree reports. What do you like most about the job? The variety. No two days are the same. And least? AWA provides a nationwide service and this often means
“It’s not like college where you can ask for an extension – meeting deadlines is critical” long distance driving and staying away. I hate being stuck in tra c. How important is teamwork? It’s very important as multiple

data, plans and reports, often in very short amounts of time. It’s not like college where you can ask for an extension – meeting deadlines is critical. What skill do you wish you had? I’d like some higher level, qualifications. I’d also like to get involved in related areas such as bat surveys.
What do you wish you’d known when you started out? How to use CAD (Computer Aided Design). It was a steep learning curve and almost every job requires some element of CAD work, whether it’s design or interpretation.
Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time? I’d like to stay with the company and become a senior consultant. I’d hope to have undertaken an MSc in arboriculture and urban forestry and to gain Chartered Arboriculturist status.
What has been your greatest challenge? Providing high quality tree survey
Would you recommend the job to others? Yes, although consultancy isn’t

TOOLBOX This month we visited Burleys, a grounds maintenance and arboriculture company in Dorking. Nick Eddison, Dan Elliot and George McSweeney told us about their kit
Van We have a 7.5t Iveco, mainly for transporting debris, as well as a number of Transits. They have been our vehicle of choice for well over 10 years because they are easy to drive, comfortable and last a lifetime.
Climbing kit The individual arborist’s rope is a matter of personal choice. Some use a 13mm Komodo climbing rope because it’s fraying resistant whereas others choose an 11mm rope.
Chainsaws Stihl are the best on the market in our opinion and their 2-stroke saws are all we use. Each arborist has an MS150T for light pruning, they use the MS200T for heavier pruning and sectional felling works and a number of others up to the MS880 for felling. We have used Echo and Husqvarna in the past but it’s easier to stick with one brand. Stihl are also very easy to fix if they do go wrong.

Stihl MS 201 TC-M
The new ECHO CS-2510TES top handle chainsaw is compact, lightweight and with a 1.1kW (1.5hp) engine, has an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. This latest model in ECHO’s range of new generation chainsaws is their lightest to date. The dry weight is just 2.3kg and with its ergonomic design the saw is highly manoeuvrable and can be used for long periods with little fatigue.
The MS 201 TC-M is the most powerful arborist chainsaw in the current Stihl line. Light, agile and designed for precision, it is a top of the range saw designed with the professional in mind. It not only delivers 1.8kW (2.4hp) but does so at the meagre weight of 3.9kg. The chainsaw has a Stihl M-Tronic engine management system and economic 2-MIX engine technology, providing optimum engine performance. This is a light professional saw designed for use in forestry, agriculture, gardening and landscaping operations.
The new CS620 20in petrol chainsaw from Cobra is built to tackle the most demanding jobs. It is powered by a 2-stroke, aircooled 62cc Cobra engine with Walbro carburettor. Makita EA3601F35B
Hitachi CS33EDP
New to Makita’s grounds maintenance, landscaping and forestry range is the lightweight and compact EA3601F35B semi-pro chainsaw, weighing in at just 4.2kg. It has a 35.2cc, 1.8kW (2.4hp) 2-stroke petrol engine featuring the Makita-designed Stratified Air Scavenging system, which recovers and burns excess fuel/air mixture from the exhaust for greater power and the cleanest possible emissions. The 35cm chain bar has a tool-less chain tensioner and spring-assisted recoil starter. Turning a dial activates the anti-icing feature, supplying warm air from the engine to prevent the carburettor icing up in cold environments.
With its new PureFire engine, the 3.7kg CS33EDP chainsaw from Hitachi Power Tools has a spring type anti-vibration system designed to reduce strain on the hands and relieve operator stress during large scale work. Running at 1.3kW (1.7hp), the saw has increased cutting speed and with a primer pump and S-Start recoil system, requires approximately 50% less pulling force to start than previous models. It also features an auto-return choke with half-throttle function for problem free starting.

ANCIENT TREE
ANCIENT TREE COLUMN

Each month we feature an ancient British tree. This month the Ancient Tree Forum introduces us to the...
The Fraternal Four, Borrowdale The Ancient Tree Forum’s autumn field event included a visit to Seathwaite in the Lake District valley of Borrowdale, where we visited the ancient yew trees made famous by William Wordsworth in his poem ‘ ew Trees’, written in 1 03: ‘…..those fraternal Four of Borrowdale, Joined in one solemn and capacious grove; Huge trunks! – and each particular trunk a growth
Of intertwisted fibres serpentine Up-coiling and inveterately convolved…’ One of the four yews was uprooted shortly after the poem was written, but the other three wonderfully gnarled and hollowed trees are still going strong. The upper part of the tree highest up the slope came down in a storm in 2005, letting in more light, and since then the tree below it has responded with excellent epicormic growth. The trees are known to be at least 1500 years old but are likely to be much older than that, pre-dating the Romans. They appear to be three separate trees but in fact DNA research carried out by National Trust Woodland Ranger Maurice Pankhurst and the Forestry commission in Scotland has proved that two of the three share an identical DNA fingerprint and therefore grew from the same original tree. Seathwaite, which is the wettest inhabited place in Britain, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, rich in invertebrate interest, lichen ora, bryophytes and liverworts, many of which are associated with the ancient pollards. On the day of the Ancient Tree Forum’s visit invertebrate ecologist
Keith Alexander found a glow-worm larva in one of the yews. Seed has been collected from the Fraternal Three, and saplings are now growing in protective cages nearby and in other remote areas in Borrowdale. An Ancient Tree Forum Cumbria group is now being set up; for details contact ian.jack@lowther.co.uk. The next Ancient Tree Forum field event will be a visit to Burghley Park in Lincolnshire on Thursday 10 March 2016. For more details of the spring trip and other events visit
