THE HOME OF SASOL A Mammoth development which is now home to Sasol’s headquarters in Sandton, Johannesburg has been the talk of the town this year. This beautifully modern development has adopted environmentally sustainable practices and been awarded a 5-Star Green Star design category rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa. A range of natural habitats have been created, with individual indigenous biomes attracting SA’s wildlife, insects and birds, on the external decks, within the grounds, as well as on the rooftop of the building. Insite Landscape Architects were part of the incredible team that brought this development to life and were appointed during stage one of the project, giving design input and some design guidance at initiation phase. This played an important co-ordination role through all work stages of this award-winning development, undoubtedly one of the most iconic buildings in Southern Africa. NOTABLE DEVELOPMENTS

Intent of the Project: Sasol’s landscape design concept strongly draws on three primary aspirations: The first is to provide the building with a base and perimeter that is almost entirely a greened zone. This solution nestles the architecture softly into its surrounding context and also assists in the beautification of views both out of and towards the building. The second aspiration is to provide a landscape that is as fluid and interactive as the architecture it supports. The landscape patterning thus reflects the design lines of the building. The third influence develops in response to, and in celebration of, the Sasol Group’s clear commitment to the conservation of natural habitats and environments. The landscape design focuses on creating gardens and spaces that are aligned with the patterns of nature, encourage biodiversity (biomes), and allow for the preservation of a delicate balance and understanding that hangs between man and the environment. Context: The landscape design encompasses different spaces; ground level, the interior and exterior spaces of the podium level on top of the super basement, the 5th floor, and the 10th floor. The building concept for this state‐of‐ the-art development was inspired by Sasol’s various business units surrounding a nucleus and consists of a central core and integrated floor‐plate with bridges that lead to the various departments. The contemporary workplace design allows for free movement both vertically and horizontally throughout the building. Interestingly, the iconic S-shaped floating glass structure is also the first development that will lead the way in opening up the next new precinct on Katherine Street. The notions listed in the “Intent” section translate into organic and flowing planting, water features, and hard landscape lines. These lines are introduced even at one’s first experience of the building as one is drawn up into the sweeping entrance, enveloped up off the street into a space that bridges two expansive reflection pools and welcomes one into the sculptural volume that is the Sasol

Headquarters. The integration of the outdoors and the indoors is immediately visible. The large entrance reflection pools continue their sweep into the main atrium and encompass the circulation route up from the basement, and pockets of forest filter the element of greening in from outside. The landscape design of the planters, paving, planter walls, and water features is completely integrated to a very high standard – nothing jars the eye. As one moves around the building on Street Level, Podium Level and the upper terraces, one experiences the different biomes created through specific planting selection in the landscape design. The planter walls rise and fall organically, containing rolling and sweeping berms and a forest of indigenous trees. The walls also transform in portions to become seating elements. These planter walls weave in and out, creating sculptural spaces that open up to the sky and that will, with the aid of integrated lighting designs, come to life at night. The undulating language in this garden, informed by the architectural forms that it surrounds, defines the landscape design philosophy, which is stitched through into all external and terrace areas. Fluid paths lead the visitor out onto the Podium Level landscape, serene and encompassing, allowing for the thoughtful absorption of current and future art pieces and sculptural elements. Winding pathways guide visitors through the full and rich biome vegetation displays, that celebrate and showcase carefully selected indigenous trees and shrubs that are specifically known for their bird and butterfly attracting characteristics, possibly allowing too for the display of information from the Sasol Birding Collection. In order to realise a design of this magnitude, a few things needed to be taken into account: Easy access to and from the building podium level had to be maintained. Materials needed to be hoisted to the 5th and 10th floors on a building façade that cantilevers outwards. The Green Star requirements in terms of total percentage of planted areas needed to amount to 30%.

There was also a restricted material load on all slabs – Insite had to design the landscape with both soil and void formers. Storm‐water management was an aspect that had to be taken into consideration. Trees planted on the project needed to be large scale at installation to bring balance between building and landscape. Sun/Heat reflection from the building façade influenced the planting design. Creating sufficient soil depth for trees on the Slab was very important, as was attracting different species of birds and butterflies. Insite needed to design fluent paving lines, linking with lines of the building's architecture. Design Solutions: For easy access the VIP ramp area was mainly used to get landscape materials to the Podium level. Because of the large scale of the project and the involvement of so many different elements that needed to be installed at different timeframes, it was very important to liaise and co‐ordinate delivery and installation dates. Through this management there was always a clear and accessible route to the podium level. Hoisting materials ‐ the steel planters were custom designed for the 10th and 5th floors. Taking transport methods and crane hoisting abilities into consideration, the planters were manufactured in specific unit sizes which could be hoisted without damaging the building glass façade. The separate units were then installed and fixed on site. For Green Star requirements. The design focused on the 30% landscape area in relation to the site boundary area. A large

permeable grass block planted surface area was introduced at the VIP drop- off area to achieve the desired area. Restricted material load on slabs; a high density polystyrene was used in all planted areas underneath light weight free draining planting medium to minimize load on slab. With regards to storm water management ‐ Layer works under the paving areas have a thick nofines layer for drainage and a sloped screed on top of slab that drains to surrounding full bores. Drainage covers inside the paving area were also designed to fit in with the design. A tree procurement contract was set up to procure the tree species two years before installation. The Sun/Heat reflection was resolved by the selection of certain plant species that could tolerate the heat reflection from the building and still form part of the initial design idea. Different biomes were introduced around the building footprint, creating sufficient soil depths using the undulating planter walls as a design tool, to rise and fall where necessary to create the desired planting depth. To attract different species of birds and butterflies, different biomes were introduced around the building footprint as you walk around. Each biome has specific species of plants that attract birds and butterflies. You experience a definite change in landscape character as well as the species of birds and butterflies that occur in that specific biome.

THE URBAN SANCTUARY Square One Landscape Architects took on an incredible project in the Heart of Cape Town, The Towers at Merriman Square. The project is innovative and has been very well implemented, and is a new benchmark for the development of urban spaces in the City of Cape Town, including both stormwater management and water harvesting. It provides both passive recreation and education for pedestrians as well, which adds to its overall exemplary implementation.

he Towers development seeks to link two towers with a new building partially covering an unused plaza in the Foreshore area of Cape Town’s central business district. The Foreshore is located between the modern port of Cape Town and the historic city centre. This area was reclaimed from the sea in Table Bay between the 1930’s and 1940’s in an effort to create a more modern harbour precinct.Much of the Foreshore today is a result of modernist planning principles, many of which created harsh, inhospitable environments with very little consideration in creating desirable public spaces. In exchange for developmental rights above public land, the client, Redefine Properties, was required to upgrade the square at the Towers development and activate the building’s edges to re-energize the Foreshore. Square One were appointed to redesign this important but outdated urban square as an ‘urban sanctuary’ within the stark Foreshore environment. The super canopy & planting counter this through manipulation of scale, enclosure & light to create the generous and welcoming urban room. The project began with an initial masterplanning exercise for the City of Cape Town which reimagined the foreshore in terms of Landscape Urbanism, integrating storm-water management strategies with a sheltered network of green infrastructure to provide respite from the exposed foreshore environment. As Cape Town is a water stressed environment Square One designed sustainable urban drainage systems as the structuring elements for public place-making while facilitating convenient pedestrian movement and connections to the public transport network. Rainwater is harvested from the roofs of the parking garage and stored in tanks to irrigate the expansive green façades that span the sides of the new building. Overflow water is directed down the enormous support columns within the square and directed into relaxation chambers that dissipate the energy from the fall, slowing down the water before it is channelled gently into vegetated bio-filtration basins. The basins sustain indigenous wetland species & recharge the water table which minimises the need for outdated storm-water infrastructure.

The ground-breaking project uses infrastructure to create an enticing environment for people while enhancing ecological function. The square is immensely popular & has transformed the perception of open space & resilient design. This project makes a valuable contribution to the Foreshore of Cape Town, touching numerous people on a daily basis and is a world-class project, which will enrich South African Landscape Architecture.

T HE M E E T I NG P L AC E Alice Lane is an urban development in Sandton, Johannesburg. With landscape phasing spanning over many years, this site was developed for Pivotal Property Investment Fund + Abland, with Abland leading the process of development throughout its various stages. Alice Lane Precinct Phase III & Piazza is the third of the phases Karen Marais has been involved in, initially beginning phase I whilst working for the renowned Insite Landscape Architects, and then tackling phases II and III once she had begun her own firm, The Ochre Office, in 2013. Her and her team have thus had the pleasure of working through the process that has brought this incredible development to life.

Project History The Alice Lane Precinct essentially incorporates 3 individual buildings, connected over one super-basement. The full site extends from the corner of Fredman and 5th up to and southwards along Alice Lane. All three buildings spill out onto the common Piazza Level, designed and landscaped to serve as a seamless integration of the separate phases. The client and project team saw the potential of creating publicly accessible space in the centre of prime commercial properties. This piazza space not only acts to glue the development as one but opens it out to the street, affording users and tenants the freedom to move easily between offices, shops, services and surrounds. The site slopes dramatically from Alice Lane down to Fredman Drive, allowing the Piazza to integrate at street level on Alice Lane but affording spectacular views over the NorthWestern Suburbs on the Fredman boundary. The Design Allowing the precinct to be accessible from all directions and opening it to the street edge was the principal objective of the project. It was paramount to create on the ground level of the three buildings, an active zone that encouraged engagement constantly www.prolandscaper.co.za

throughout the day and night. Accessibility and appeal to the businessmen and woman to utilize the space was at the forefront of the design concept. CORE CONCEPTS: Open edges: The development required open edges to the street, allowing free flow of pedestrian movement, pulling visitors inwards. Gateway: The landscape needed to differentiate itself, announcing your arrival into the precinct – “gateway” and “threshold” became important elements; Active core: The three buildings accumulate around a central zone – the heart of the piazza – and working closely with the Architects ensured that the functions that gathered around this core active the space and allow opportunity for gathering and business (cafes and restaurants spill out towards a central space that in turn can be used for functions and exhibitions etc.); Fluidity of design: With the brief encouraging that the piazza space spill between core and edges, the lines on

the ground naturally interpreted paths of movement, bleeding and sweeping below the buildings. Users of the precinct can walk freely between and underneath the building structures and the piazza sweeps through; Practicality and Affordability: The aim was to address user needs and function (rest, business, gathering, security, adaptability of space, maintenance, navigation, etc.) all the while considering structural, drainage, and level implications. The team repeated workshops that built up complex ideas and then stripped them down again to their simplest aspects to ensure they were affordable, buildable and addressed the core intentions of functionality. Simplification of Aesthetic: Common design language, construction-type and materiality were key but each zone of the precinct required various alignments/ combinations of those elements to differentiate the spaces and allow for interest in the design. The team had to harness five years’ worth of ideas,break them down and merge them together into a cohesive whole.

SUPPLIERS Seating Tops and Pots: Igneous Concrete Vicky Grigoroglu - 082 443 0084 Tree Grilles: Mojeba Projects Morris - 082 449 5038 Sourcing Materials Much of the materiality of the design was decided in Phase I – the Marsh/Standard Bank building. Even at this early phase of the design, the team had to develop a palette of textures and forms that they could transfer/ extend out into the Piazza as the development progressed. The materials needed to be sustainable (in budget and supply) and, even at this stage, Karen and her team needed to find a design language that would have longevity and not run the risk of alienating itself from the next two phases (even though they didn’t know what the next two buildings would look like at that stage). The materials that were selected for continuity through the development were the Igneous Concrete seating panels, the Bosun granite paving brick, the Eva-last composite decking and of course general tones of grey, black and white which could easily be supplemented with colour as the project progressed. There were, like with most projects some obstacles that influenced the process. The unpacking of the slab was a notable aspect: The entire Piazza level is constructed as a suspended / raised Bondek slab over a load-bearing base penetron slab. The base slab was a blanket layer engineered to allow the piazza design the flexibility required to develop and change without requiring redesign of the structure. It acts as a drainage deck,

and is tilted to allow for flow of storm water to the various outlet systems. A Bondek slab is then raised above this (300mm-1m average) above the base slab and would support the paved walkable zone. The “below board” complications that every team member can attest to are also notable, addressing drainage, support, planter depths and the routing of multiple infrastructure that services the piazza (water, irrigation, lighting, etc.) The intricate paving design was very tricky to document throughout the process and The Central Water Feature was not without its complications and had to be handled carefully and creatively to create a feature that dealt with the fluid element of water. Levels also played a part in the design implementation. Although all three buildings are set at basement level, their ground floors differ in levelling- implementing paving and flow whilst coordinating levelling was something that had to be taken into account. Planting selected had to be robust and generally low maintenance to account for the various climate zones amidst the piazza- some shaded areas are exposed to the chill and channeling of wind and some are exposed to the harsh sun. It was important to change the planting palette throughout the piazza to account for the different zones.

he brief of this project was to design a contemporary play area on the Podium level of a new multi-use residential development. The created space was to be a safe place that caters for multiple social functions and various age groups. The play area was to have a contemporary aesthetic with sculptural elements acting as a visually pleasing installation from inside the residential units. The Intent was to create a social space with contemporary aesthetic and fluid forms, that is both multifunctional and accessible to various age groups. To explore the sculptural play theme through elements that stimulate children’s sense of shape, colours and textures. To maintain a balanced hard and soft surface ratio that helps regulate the heat island effect and, incorporate a diverse planting palette that adds ecological value. Context: With regard to context, the play space is located within the confines of a new multi-use residential development, and responds mainly to the architecture and functions of the residential development. Design Excellence: The raised composite walkway acts as a unifying design element along which the spatial elements and activities occur. Fluid design forms and lines are utilized to add a dynamic component to the space and give the space a contemporary aesthetic. The play area spaces consist of north and south play pits and an open multifunctional space on the western periphery, the play pits and multifunctional space are surfaced with Easigrass Kensington artificial turf for impact absorption. The raised walkway has varying widths with seating spaces along the wider sections of the walkway. Steps are incorporated along the walkway for easy access. The raised composite walkway material consists of 1 22m² of Enviro-deck’s Legacy composite decking range. The sculptural play elements were developed specifically to stimulate children’s sense of space, shapes and colour. The elements were custom made from mild steel and composite timber which exploit a variety of textures (e.g. smooth steel versus uneven timber surfaces).

Three play pods are haphazardly mounted in the north play pit while a vertical play element is mounted in the south play pit. The pergolas also take on sculptural forms and frame the play area on the northern edge while providing shade for the seating spaces. Ecosystem services: A selection of robust and predominantly indigenous planting to attract fauna is utilized in the raised planters and concrete pots to add ecological value and create a natural habitat within the urban space. The planting palette comprises trees as well as shrubs and groundcovers. Sustainability and Resilience in accordance with sustainable design practice: A balanced hard and soft surface ratio contributes toward minimizing heat island effect within the urban space. The raised planters are irrigated by means of drip irrigation technology to minimize water use. The Composite decking used for the raised walkway surface is an eco-friendly material that

is manufactured from recycled wood fibre and recycled polyethylene plastic. Some of the issues that were identified include: 1.

Permeability and easy access to and from the building entrance points had to be maintained.

Potential heat island effect had to be minimized.

Storm-water management had to be taken into consideration.

Working on podium or on-slab space means restricted material load.

Steel play elements, concrete pots, paving and planting (including six 400 litres, ten 200 litres and six 100 litres trees) as well as 145 mÂł soil medium had to be carried up four floors for installation.

How these were overcome: To ensure permeability and easy access, the design solution comprises integrated spaces along a raised composite walkway. The walkway is also designed such that it allows cross-movement through the play area for easy access to building entrance points. Potential heat island effect is minimized by the use of large raised planters and concrete pots, with planting and large trees to create a balanced hard and soft surface ratio as well as add an ecological benefit. Storm-water is managed through the use of permeable surfaces throughout the play area to allow for easy drainage of excess stormwater to sloped screed below that drains to the surrounding full-bores. To minimize the material load, light-weight free draining planting medium was used with a Zipcore drainage layer. Provision was made for a 50T crane to convey the steel play elements, concrete pots, paving and planting as well as 145 mÂł soil medium to the podium level on the fourth floor space. The mild steel play elements and pergola designs allowed for construction of separate components for easy transportation and later assembly on site.

axwell Office Park is an upmarket office development in the heart of Waterfall City in Midrand. Developed by Atterbury for Attacq, the park was completed in 4 phases and is made up of 7 office buildings, with a central conference centre and coffee shop. Each phase was executed as a separate contract and in many cases the main contractor differed from phase to phase which was challenging from a continuity point of view. The Brief The client wanted a modern upmarket office development to act as the centre piece for the business node at the Waterfall City Development. The landscaping had to be bold, sleek and in many cases functional in order to tie the various phases of the park together and create an inviting and flowing link between all of the buildings and facilities. Although Danie Rebel from DRLA had the overall landscape design and integration master plan firmly in place from the start, the phasing of the project meant that each section was treated as a separate design, with its own irrigation and hard landscaping elements. This meant that the tying-in of Phases to one another was tricky to ensure the seamless flow between each building and the outdoor spaces created by the modern, bold design. Special attention must be drawn to the quality of the materials used throughout and the numerous bespoke landscape elements and furniture created within the development. One of the biggest challenges experienced was the tight programmes and deadlines to deliver the buildings as tenants had already signed leasesone of which was Attacq whose offices are located in Building 2. Each phase needed to

be delivered on spec and on time, ensuring that co-ordination and teamwork was required by all parties. The Landscaping The landscaping comprises of all indigenous planting and lawn with the exception of the All Seasons Evergreen lawn installed on the podiums at each building. The design has created private outdoor entertainment areas for each building and a seamless network of pedestrian pathways, intensive planting, flowing lawns and a passive outdoor spaces in the green belts between each phase of the development. Storm-water attenuation is also handled within the landscaped areas although they blend effortlessly into the landscape and are hardly noticeable. Overall the design and landscaping contrasts against the modern architecture of the buildings and the peripheral planting and trees assist in bringing some scale to the buildings, allowing them to blend into the landscape rather than just sit in it. Sourcing the Materials As with most projects of this nature, sourcing of the various materials required can be tricky and quality was Countrylines number 1 priority. Long standing relationships with regular suppliers ensured that their in-house procurement team were not only able to source the required materials for the scope of work, but also had a chance to source and supply materials for the main contractors who asked for assistance with some special items. They were also able to draw from their own nursery stock (where Countryline grows popular plant and tree species or specific plants for projects.

A Brief History Northgate Island was originally developed to capitalise on Canal Walk’s buzzing retail traffic, however, the development battled vacancy since inception and needed a re-imaginedspace to resurrect its initial intent. Subsequently, 85 percent of the 18 000sqm property was acquired for R110 million in a joint venture between Arbitrage Property Fund and Buffet Investment Services with the intention of repurposing the under-performing asset through conversion into an office park, created to provide an affordable, well-positioned offering with ample parking and gorgeous views of Table Mountain to complete its appeal. This redevelopment project represents a further investment of R30 million by the development group. The Brief This project was conceptualized and entered into a design competition that sought to reimagine an existing car park ramp as a multipurpose meeting, recreation, and event space. This spiral ramp structure forms the core of the long four-story building. Mark Saint Pôl, Director of Square One Landscape Architects, together with his team, won this competition and were thus commissioned to transform the ramp into a unique amenity that would attract dynamic new tenants to the development. The Skycatcher The Skycatcher concept provides a unique urban place-making opportunity through the creation of a consolidated façade of vertical greenery. Climbing plants wrap the ramp structure, creating an eye-catching cylinder of green. A carefully engineered slice through the concrete ramp allows sunlight to stream down onto a large reflecting pool at the base of the structure, while an amphitheatre provides opportunities for gatherings alongside the reflecting pool. Here, visitors can experience the sky and the inner green-draped walls reflected in the pool. For those wanting to take a break from their office environment, seating areas along the ramp offer breakaway spaces for lunch and relaxation. A beer garden and food stalls adjacent to the ramp have been designed

to provide sustenance. The arbour-like ramp functions as an ambulatory or open air gallery and opens up to reveal the sky above and panoramic views of Devils Peak and Table Mountain. The Skycatcher brings the outside in, and draws the inside out – creating spaces rich in sensory experience and balances built and natural elements, to create a valuable and unique urban place. Stephen Whitehead, director of Boogertman + Partners Architects, explains that the extensive redevelopment and refurbishment infrastructurally includes transforming the facade by cutting back the roof overhang and placing a new fascia to provide a fresh identity. "We are creating a sense of movement and dynamism to reflect the energy from the activity on one of the best used highway junctions in Cape Town. Design Concept Realised Translating the design concept into construction details was not without complexity. However, complexity and constraints can lead to interesting design solutions when done well. The gradient of the original vehicular ramp was not only inconsistent, but it also cambered and tilted in many directions. The team were able to overcome this by creating a series of stepped timber terraces and articulated planters. These terraced rooms provide a range of spaces for various groups of people to gather at lunch or for an informal meeting. The addition of the decking created a further opportunity to conceal the electrical and irrigation services. The desire to bring sunlight into the space meant that a portion of the ramp had to cut away which

caused some structural challenges for the engineers. In addition, the incorporation of the planters and decking did mean that the already limited load bearing capacity of the ramp was stretched. This was in turn resolved with the incorporation of lightweight polystyrene boards within the planters to reduce the weight of the planting medium on the existing concrete slab. Fluctuations in the exchange rate meant that the stainless steel mesh that had been specified for the ramp facades was no longer affordable. Again the team were able to design a locally manufactured alternative that matched the desired effect. The final result shows what can happen when a creative and experienced project team work together to turn complex design challenges into meaningful and enjoyable places.

The new lecture theatre project at the University of Cape Town is located at the southern end of University Avenue on the Upper Campus. OvP were commissioned to take on the role of reimagining the landscape of this site that provides a 500m2 lecture venue for 400 people.

The Brief The brief for this project was the provision of a new building in the form of a 400 seat lecture theatre at the southern termination of University Avenue. It was seen by the Client as an opportunity to provide spatial definition and visual coherence to an unresolved area previously occupied by the Janitor’s Residence.

special focus on the proposed pedestrianisation of University Avenue and the the upgrade of Residence Square (flanking the central axis on Jameson Hall) and the conceptual integration of the proposed new Lecture Theatre at the southern end of Univesity Avenue.

The design was preceded by the appointment of OvP to undertake a visual survey of the Upper Campus, the outcome of which was a study which established new Landscape Design Principles and Guidelines for the implementation of future work.

These informants were to be directly applied to guide the implementation and heritage inspired debate around the position, scale and form of the proposed Lecture Theatre either as a building to replace the Janitor’s House as a focal point at the end of the Avenue or as a building standing in line with the existing buildings on the curved armature of the Avenue.

the end sanity prevailed and the argument for the building conforming to the ‘line of soldiers standing to attention’ was accepted and the design moved forward into documentation and implementation. Throughout the design process, led by GAPPArchitects & Urban Designers, the clients objective was around conceiving a contemporary expression for the project, being linked, but not directly associated to the heritage core of the Upper Campus, and which would provide design informants for the phased upgrade of the Avenue which was likely to commence from the core outwards.

SUPPLIERS In retrospect, the objectives were achieved, and the space forms a powerful â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sense of placeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the southern end of the campus and provides an inferred contemporary reference to the form and language of the central axis (Jameson Steps) in the context of a hillside campus defined by terraces cut into the slope and mediated by retaining walls and stairs. This project required carefull and rigorous integration with the design team, particularly with regard to heritage issues relating to the spatial continuity and landscape character of the existing campus. The landscape design response related directly to how the southern termination of University Avenue was to be achieved, both in terms of where the building was to be positioned and the form and landscape character mediated the slope and orientation of the site. The Design Summary The siting and massing of the building was informed by heritage principles relating to the evolution of the Upper Campus plan and the preservation of the spatial continuity of the avenue and heritage context. The spatial corridor formed by the curvature of the avenue, a shaft of space lined with fine, well

ordered academic buildings, is intended to be incrementally pedestrianised but lacked visual coherence towards the southern end. The landscape response was therefore centred on the idea of anchoring the southern termination of the avenue and providing an inferred contemporary reference to the form and language of the central axis (Jameson Steps) in the context of a hillside campus defined by terraces cut into the slope and mediated by retaining walls and stairs.

EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

A feature of the building design is the continuity of the green facades of the historic core. In contrast to the traditional virginia creeper covered stipple plastered masonry walls, this is achieved by a more contemporary expression of a light steel trellis system plantfed with indigenous climbers over the full height of the glass faĂ§ade. This element will provide seasonal shading and contributes to the green building design principles. The external learning spaces encourage informal social interaction and are defined by a gently sloping lawn embankment bathed in dappled shade from a large oak tree (carefully maintained during the course of construction), a vegetated storm water swale with pedestrian bridge, cycling facilities and indigenous planting palette. The project is the first at UCT to achieve a 4-star design rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa.

SUSTAINABILITY The story behind the University of Pretoria’s Mining Engineering Study Centre Rain Harvesting Garden project is one of perseverance and a heartfelt quest to provide a state of the art ‘living laboratory’

he University of Pretoria identified a need for a dedicated study centre that could serve its engineering programmes and, despite numerous conceptual designs and site allocations, a lack of funding meant the project failed to emerge alongside its planned Engineering 3 project. Construction of the Engineering 3 building on the Hatfield Campus provided additional lecture

halls, laboratories, an access road and parking for 1,000 cars. The design was already well advanced when Neal Dunstan, the university’s campus landscape architect, was appointed to the project in late 2011 and tasked with pushing ahead with the Study Centre plans. The site development plan was submitted in December 2011 and tender documentation prepared for February 2012, by which time a deal had been

concluded between donors and the university to fund the centre. Construction of the centre started in April 2012, the bulk of the landscape works commenced in April 2013, and the project was completed by September 2013. The project fell within two of the university’s faculties, the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The site also fell within the 3.5ha Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden, bringing with it a legal obligation to www.prolandscaper.co.za

maintain and develop this internationally recognised facility. The garden contained a number of protected trees and all were retained and incorporated into the final design. Dunstan worked hand in hand with Jason Sampson, the botanical garden’s curator, in the planning and design of the space. Since the mid 1950s, large portions of the University of Pretoria’s Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden had been lost to campus development. Created in 1934, the growing conditions were poor due to acidic soil conditions. The new building features a 1,700m2 roof, which placed considerable pressure on the overloaded stormwater infrastructure. This was the first project by the university to merge the landscape and building through blue-green engineering in a quest for a ‘living laboratory’.

The design team studied stormwater management and theories by professors Nigel Dunnett and Andy Clayden, of the University of Sheffield in the UK, who were involved in the design of the London Olympic Village. The core of the design revolved around the concept of a ‘rain garden’, an engineered combination of specially selected plants, soils and mulch designed to collect, retain and cleanse rainwater that runs off impervious surfaces. Re-use of cleaned stormwater, in turn, enabled the creation of a microclimate for various species of flora and fauna. The study centre is one of the few buildings in the world to incorporate an integrated rain garden system. The system harvests 17,000 litres of water for every 10mm of rain from the study centre roof and has transformed a previously dead space around the Engineering 1 building into a successful water retention facility. A suitable microclimate enabled the university’s ‘hidden’ tropical African cycad (Encephalartos) collection to be transplanted so this missing part of the university’s acclaimed plant collection could be enjoyed by all. In total, 56 specimens from 22 species were replanted. A fine of R25,000 was worked into the Pro Landscaper Africa | Coffee Table Edition 1

building contract for the protection of existing trees on the site and was applicable to all contractors/sub contractors. However, engineering lecture facilities beneath the Study Centre were not waterproofed so the traditional rain garden approach could not be applied there, leading to a hybrid solution. The issue of waterproofing and inadequate stormwater infrastructure was estimated to cost R8 million if resolved by conventional means. However, a UV-stable EPDM rubber liner, manufactured by Firestone, was selected to contain the water and prevent seepage to the lecture halls below. The liner, installed by Belgro

Landscaping, presented a challenge and a Firestone technical director visited the project to advise, resulting in a number of changes to the design, the majority of which led to a cost saving of about R6.5 million. The product has been tested as a liner for water reservoirs worldwide. It is durable, flexible, has a 300% stretch capability and can shift with any ground movement that may occur without stress to the installation. Clay soil placed on to the liner was sourced from the university’s Prinshof Lecture Complex and would otherwise have been discarded. All compost supplied for the project came from the university’s waste recycling and composting project. Clay-rich soil was placed on top of the liner.

BEFORE/DURING The heart of the study centre’s system revolves around stormwater being collected from

the roof and surrounding hard surfaces and being allowed to flow into vegetated swales, the kidneys of the system. From there, the cleansed water flows into a permanent pond and then on to tidal ponds. All excess water from these ponds flows into a 130m3 tank beneath the staircase that ramps on the western side of the study centre. This water is used to irrigate the botanical garden and to circulate the system so water is never static. Total capacity of the pond system (excluding the tank) is about 550m3. Dunstan explained that in addition to having a water harvesting function, the ponds operate as a treatment wetland and the reed beds have filtration ability. He said the permanent ponds were planted with water lilies, reeds and a few exotic (but non-invasive) ornamentals. In the wet season, the tidal ponds flood from stormwater

run-off. The water in the system is continuously circulated through the swales and ponds. The

tidal pond has a valve system which allows the water level to be lowered in winter. In total, 160 indigenous and exotic aquatic and terrestrial plant species were used in the spaces in and around the system. Planting had to complement and facilitate the system’s bioremediation potential (a waste management technique that involves the use of organisms to remove or neutralise pollutants) and to keep the water clean as well as soften the hard lines of the building and create habitat for wildlife. All paving used in the project was recycled in one form or another. The in-situ concrete paving lifted during the demolition phase was retained and reused as permeable paving, cladding for pond walls, and energy breakers for stormwater entering the system. The blocks used for paving were partly sourced from waste material left over from platinum mining operations. All rock used in the landscape came from excavations on site and from another project in Groenkloof. Specially cast pavers by WilsonStone depict the logos of the Botanical Garden (cycad cone)

and the Department of Plant Sciences (a baobab tree). The embossed pavers were also installed at the controlled access points. All copings were retained and used for repairs and as stepping stones. To prevent access to the deepest bodies of water retaining/seating walls, which are free flowing organic forms, were constructed to assist movement and help the visually impaired. Subtle, low-level LED wash lighting was added to the retaining/seating walls but, as a whole, external lighting to the Study Centre was kept to a minimum so as not to interfere with the natural day-night cycles of the plants, frogs and fish, which were introduced into the system for ecological purposes and also for research. Soft landscaping installation was carried out by Pretoria-based company Origin Landscapes. The project was presented to the California Horticultural Society and reached the final adjudication round of the International Sustainable Campus Network’s annual awards. It is also part of an ongoing worldwide research project on biomimicry in the UK by Professor Jas Pal Badyal, of the University of Durham. The garden hosts numerous research projects by students from the departments of Zoology, Plant Sciences and Engineering, with land art group Site Works conducting a year-long photographic project. LANDSCAPING THE JOURNEY The Brief The project brief needed to fit the specific requirements of St. Albans College in Pretoria, which was to provide a function area to seat 1000 people for end of year prize giving events and other general events throughout the year. The existing dining hall and adjacent open space was identified for the development into a multi-purpose dining/function hall with sufficient spill-out space. The site gradient was such that terracing needed to be incorporated to create a level area for the 300m² covered roof extension.

Boogertman + Partners create a usable common space for the prestigious St Albans School in Pretoria. A stylish, low maintenance and uncluttered meeting space for students, considering the school’s traditions, landmarks and symbolism of a journey from this phase into the next chapter of the pupils lives.

The roof extension slopes gently towards the existing façade, creating an open air covered seating area. The floor finish was designed to withstand external factors such and wind and water. The polished concrete finish has proven to be a stylish, robust and low maintenance proposal. The design approach was to respect existing student movement patterns. The approach to the hall was similar to a spider web. Students would approach the hall from all angles. The

need to create a landscaped area that would both serve as a spill-out area for hall activities and not impede on the natural movement patterns was the biggest challenge.

The movement patterns of students were carefully monitored to allow for ‘desire lines’ and strategically placed landscape elements as not to create clutter and allow for ease of flow. Due to the natural fall of the site, a series of landscaped terraces were created and planted with lawn to create informal seating areas. Internet access along these terraces as well as newly designed circular seating surrounding the existing trees provides essential internet access to all students.

Another design criteria was to create an outdoor gathering space where students and their teachers could gather for the annual ‘journey’ event. The design criteria was to incorporate the school bell to allow each individual student to ring it before he departed on his journey. The design approach was to create an amphitheatre that would allow for the whole school including the parents to celebrate this and other milestone events. Pertinent to this project’s aesthetic was to design a landscape that would be visually pleasing in the day as well as in the evenings. The design approach was to create overhangs on all steps and terraces and fix linear led lighting along these edges. An illuminous landscape was created avoiding any uplighters that would be ecologically unfriendly. The design material palette was chosen carefully to create a minimalistic and uncluttered landscape. Materials were chosen to avoid any tripping and slipping. Surfaces flow easily from one to the next with a demarcated seating area not obstructing any natural pedestrian flow. Another design criteria was to create a landscape that was low maintenance. The school indicated that they would be happy to have less shrubs and groundcovers and more natural lawn areas. The existing Stinkwood trees were formalised into a stinkwood forest concept where 20new trees were planted to create a strong identity. The indigenous false olive indigenous trees were chosen for the lawn terraces. These trees would create a continuous ‘hedge in the sky’ effect, framing the amphitheatre without obstructing any views from the upper terraces on the lower end.

Feenstra Group has constructed an immersive learning environment to house the Menlyn Learning Hub and its new academic staff at this location. Currently the building capacity can accommodate 2500 students with future phases to increase the student numbers to 8000 and also meets the CTI and MGI criteria. Boogertman + Partners were approached by the Feenstra Group to develop this Hub as a flagship educational campus development. The chosen site is located in the established Menlo Park neighbourhood on the old sport grounds owned by the Nuwe Hoop School. The development aimed to bring more tertiary educational opportunities to the City of Tshwane. The school released some of the land to a private developer, Feenstra Group, in the form of a long-term lease to develop the educational facility.

The Aim The aim of this project was to develop an educational campus facility that will accommodate the lifestyle of students and educational staff. The second point was to further the development aimed to upgrade and revitalise the public environment surrounding the campus for both the students and the residents of the Menlo Park Neighbourhood. Finally, the campus needed to connect to the neighbouring green open space where two watercourses (Waterkloof and Wolwe spruit) join within the development node.

The current buildings are phase 1 of a larger campus development. It was necessary to keep this in mind with the design of the landscape to accommodate future development but also to create a comfortable campus environment in the short term- until completion of the second phase. The concept was to create a central atrium or piazza space where students and staff can spill out and enjoy being outside in-between classes. A large precast concrete staircase gives the user access to the buildings that are situated on a podium and serves as an amphitheatre for larger events. The concrete staircase was designed in such a way as to help the basements below ventilate naturally. This was achieved by having open gaps between each tread of the staircase to allow for air to move freely from the courtyard into the basement. A large ramp cuts through the staircase to give paraplegic access to the

upper area of the courtyard and buildings. The upper area of the courtyard is also the main circulation area for students between classes and thus creates an opportunity for a pause or breakaway area. This space was surfaced with artificial lawn and paving to accommodate all the foot traffic and a shaded seating area was created with large potted trees and vegetation. The large lightweight concrete pots also form a sculptural feature within the courtyard space especially when looking down from the surrounding buildings.

A grand staircase that cuts through the two buildings connects the courtyard to the lower eastern terrace where the student cafeteria is situated. The cafeteria spills out onto the lawn and paved terrace, giving the students a space to enjoy views over the neighbouring spruit and natural open space while enjoying their lunch. Seating walls and furniture is provided throughout the site to further add to the comfort of the students and staff moving around on the campus. The landscape surrounding the buildings was designed to tie into the natural environment by only using indigenous planting and trees

that will fit the character of the neighbouring natural open space. All surface parking areas was designed with permeable paving to allow indigenous grass to grow in the parking bays and roads, and to allow water to naturally penetrate the surface and replenish ground water sources. All sidewalks surrounding the development were upgraded with new surfaces, vegetation and trees to improve the comfort level of the large number of pedestrians that will move to and from the campus. Currently in the process is the upgrading of the sidewalks beyond the immediate boundary of the site to connect to the bigger pedestrian network in the neighbourhood.

THERAPEUTIC Landscaping

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, situated in Parktown Johannesburg is a new 200 bed specialist paediatric and academic tertiary referral hospital. GREENinc Landscape Architects joined the design team planning this iconic project, envisioned by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, relying solely on donor funding and construction and was completed in May 2016. This space was previously a sports field belonging to the University of the Witwatersrand in nearby Braamfontein.

On plan the different hospital functions are arranged around 5 internal landscaped courtyards. Collectively they form the ‘green heart’ of the hospital and will ensure that every patient, visitor and staff member will be exposed to as much greenery and natural light as possible. The courtyards have been grouped into Active – and Passive Healing Courtyards and the design for each space has been determined by its relationship with the surrounding hospital functions, the type of user and its location over natural ground or concrete slab.

The purpose of the therapeutic garden spaces is to provide relief from the stress and emotional trauma of the hospital environment. GREENinc’s aim was to create a landscape that would aid in the convalescence of the children and that would provide welcoming, supportive spaces for visitors and members of staff. As a tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela, the intention of this project (from conceptualisation to completion) has been to serve the children of South Africa. Life Landscapes a division of Life Green Group, were very proud to have been part of this very prestigious project winning the SALI trophy for best Landscape Construction, sponsored by Just Trees at the SALI Awards of Excellence, the overall top award, the SALI Shield of Excellence in 2017 and most recently GREENinc recieved an Award of Excellence for landscape design at the Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence. This project was very complex with intricate detail in design, using a variety of materials which appeal to the senses: steel, wood, concrete, EPDM, mosaic tiles, artevia paving,

he landscape of the hospital is firmly based around the concept and principles of therapeutic landscape design, encouraging patients and visitors alike to interact with nature to aid the gradual process of healing. This choice to interact with nature provides patients with a sense of control at a time when their health is in the control of others. In return, this sense of control, as well as the sensory benefits of being in a garden, leads to a reduction in stress and ultimately to good health.

steel and brick edging, as well as a wide and varied selection of indigenous trees and planting palette which added to the overall aesthetic. Various water features, decks, play surfaces, pathways, granite and steel edging, a pergola, raised planters, work benches, sand pit, and freestanding furniture and play equipment were utilised to bring the architect’s imagined space to life. Every part of the project has its own distinct look, feel, character and purpose and this is what made it uniquely complex, also calling for careful and precise co-ordination to ensure a planned working process. The plant palette which was well researched the by the Landscape Architect ensured that the best plants were sourced with each one deliberately contributing to the healing process for the children. The areas are on different levels and all around the building, however the concept comes together beautifully.

he project brief was to redevelop Kings Beach Park, a derelict and dangerous place, poorly maintained, with green stagnant swimming pools, devil thorns on the patchy grass with broken paving and glass littered around. It was largely avoided by the general public due to safety concerns. Water conservation and sustainable use for irrigation was to be considered and incorporated into the design. The Main Design Informants: The major factors contributing to the poor sense of safety and low use was the lack of visual permeability and legibility. Earthworks Landscape Architects removed most of the internal berms, spreading and re-using the soil on site as fill to create a less undulating landscape. Port Elizabeth experienced a major drought during the design phase and the team were not allowed to use and potable water for irrigation. They noticed intermittent storm water outflow on the beach even on dry days; an apartment complex across the road was pumping groundwater out of their basement directly into the storm water system. This valuable resource was re-directed to the park and into an artificial lake. While the team were reshaping the topography to remove the berms and create the lake, they redirected the storm water from the site into the lake, adding to its capacity and solving the flooding problem. The entire park is currently irrigated from the lake. The design integrates layers of sustainable natural systems and diverse use, to improve legibility, beautify and revive the park. The concept was to integrate ‘play’ into the whole park not confine it in isolated ‘play areas’. Parents and children can play together, inspiring imaginative multi-dimensional play, and developing family relationships. A wetland was also constructed to ‘polish’ the run off from the parking area, as the overflow exits over the existing concrete slipway to the west of the site, onto the beach. Historical elements such as the old sandstone well were incorporated into the water aeration system. Play elements in the park are a mix of custom made and standard play park items, open lawns, wide walkways for skating and cycling, adventure play areas (pre-existing) and refurbished swimming pools. The skate park

was designed for skaters and BMX riders of all levels and ages, encouraging more professional users during the week and smaller kids and families on weekends. Pathways were designed as a system of major and minor connections, flowing through the park. Wider, and more, pathways were added throughout to change the old perception that the park was unsafe. Patterned brick paths were replaced with in situ cast concrete to allow for free flowing forms which could also be used as skate and cycle routes. A series of painted low walls surround the play stream, depicting a fable of the King who lost his crown. Similarly, metal cut outs of crowns morphing into birds were inserted into the concrete pathway surface to add variety, interest and playfulness to the walkways. The massive asphalt parking area is exposed to extremely harsh coastal winds, where no protected pockets allow trees a chance to establish. Typical trees have no chance of survival, even Milkwoods in the area (Sideroxylon inerme) are unsuccessful in such conditions because they cannot be clustered. The planting pallet for the parking area was chosen to focus on structural, rather than shade, plants, breaking the extensive hard surfaces visually with Aloe barberii, Aloe ferox and the variegated Metrosideros exalsa. The aloes are strong enough for the wind and can withstand the heat island effect in the parking areas. Today the park is a favorite destination for a variety of users during the week and weekends.

n an effort to bring more green space and play design to Johannesburgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s residents, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo appointed Habitat Landscape Architects to create Porcupine Park, which opened on 22 November 2013 in Lehae, a bustling but deprived residential area in the south of the city. urban forest into areas which have been previously disregarded and undeveloped. Lehae Park is situated to the south of Johannesburg in the context of a new government housing scheme. At the time of the commissioning of the design, less than half of the residential units were constructed but the first members of the community had already been moved into the area. The design approach focused on the development of a vibrant community park that promoted the

integration of the local community through an emphasis on play elements for children. The design aimed to satisfy the needs of a broad social grouping from children to adults with different cultural, religious and social backgrounds, united around a common need for a recreational space. The sustainability of the park hinged on the incorporation of robust play elements, as well as drought resistant and frost hardy plants. Materials were sourced from around Johannesburg.

The development The development of the park is articulated around a central playground. The playground was developed with a narrative that involves the dynamics present in and around termite mounds, which were a dominant feature in the Highveld grassland present on site before development started. The narrative explored the relationship of nature and people and how we are connected and dependent on each other. This was translated into the design elements of the playground. The play equipment is associated with a sequence of freestanding perforated walls, which form an interconnected playing space. Central to the construction and development process was also the issue of job creation, capacity building and skills transfer. Unemployed people from the adjacent community were employed and trained in the use of alternative building technologies, horticulture, landscape installation and maintenance.

STREET SMART Last issue we featured the Symphony Way Park in Blikkesdorp, one of three parks from Cape Town’s Smart Parks project. Here we showcase the other two, Mandela Park in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu Park, both of which are helping to improve the lives of children in one of the city’s most deprived communities

he city of Cape Town’s Parks Department ‘Smart Parks’ concept is a World Design Capital 2014 project that uses design-led thinking to transform the way public spaces are developed. So far three projects have been piloted in Blikkiesdorp, Khayelitsha and Gugulethu, all of which aim to provide local communities with innovative recreational spaces that cater for all ages and that residents can call their

own. Three more smart parks are in the pipeline for development later this year in Atlantis, Nomzamo and Seawinds. The brief The principles driving the Smart Park programme include: 1. F ocus on developing and upgrading parks in the most undeserved communities to facilitate equitable access to parks on a city-wide scale. 2. Develop selected high quality, unique and user-friendly parks that respond to and provide for the recreational needs of the communities they serve. 3. C ontribute to integrated public investment in parks and other infrastructure and promote partnerships which seek to maximise the use of limited resources.

GUGULETHU PARK

Gugulethu Park was selected for upgrade because it was located in one of the most undeserved areas of Cape Town and was highly accessible to a range of potential visitors. Situated within a dense residential area and within walking distance of Heideveld Station, it serviced children from the neighbouring schools, adolescents who came to kick a ball around and many local residents who walked through the park throughout the day. Three areas were highlighted for redevelopment: Play area equipment A new children’s play park offers opportunities for children to play and develop physically and cognitively in a safe environment. A custom designed play feature was constructed using standard components, gum poles, tyres, slides and ropes, put together in an imaginative way to take into account community needs and client feedback to suit a broad range of ages. Provision was made for an undulating surface to increase opportunities for play. An outdoor gym area provides opportunities for adolescents, young adults, adults and the elderly to be active and enhance their physical well-being.

Kickabout (multi-use court) The upgraded park includes redeveloped multi-purpose courts with high quality surfacing that are durable and can accommodate informal active play, including a variety of ball sports. The formal section of the park had sufficient space to house three kickabouts. Rubber matting was used to replace the existing asphalt and different colours were used to define the use of each kickabout. The edges to these areas needed further consideration as the low walls worked well for spectators to sit and view the games, but the remaining trees provided very little shade. New walls within the play and relaxation areas were constructed through a combination of calcrete and cast concrete tops, painted to match the existing walls. Lighting was also introduced so that the facility could be used at different times of the day.

Relaxation areas & tree planting Formal tree planting was used to line pedestrian routes and soften hard edges. Large focal trees were used to provide areas under which to relax. The community was consulted to help decide on the number and location of the trees so as not to interrupt surveillance from neighbouring houses. Most of the existing trees had been removed or were in poor condition. More appropriate tree species, such as Ficus rubiginosa and Syzigium cordatum, were used to replace the trees. Appropriate tree stakes and cages help to protect the new trees. New walkways were constructed from exposed aggregate pavers to match existing paving, with laterite used on the secondary, meandering pathways.

Mandela Park was an undeveloped area of public open space. It consisted of two sites with a total area of 9.3ha. The park was well located within walking distance of Khayelitsha and two stations (Khayelitsha and Harare). There were 14 schools within 1.5km of the site and many public buildings and squares as well as two major sporting facilities. Although there were many pockets of open space in the area, few of them had been developed, providing residents with very little in terms of quality landspace. The site lay between two formal sporting complexes making it an ideal location for a recreational area.

For the purposes of the project, the park was split into three zones: Active recreation zone The site had always supported different forms of active recreation, from athletics to soccer. There were soccer posts in the centre of this zone, providing for informal games throughout the week. The need for multi-purpose courts was clear due to the location of two schools on the north eastern and western edge of this area. Active recreational areas and multi-purpose courts with high quality surfacing were created. Synthetic turf and laterite were used to define the use of each court. The edges to these courts were defined with low walls, where spectators can sit and view the games, with strategic tree planting for shade. Lighting was introduced so that the facility can be used at different times of the day.

Recreation zone & community gardens The introduction of trees and seating vastly improved the quality of these areas, providing places for people to meet and relax under the shade of a tree. A maintenance strategy was crucial to ensure that the trees survive to maturity. A structured space with places to warm up and stretch now encourages and supports activities such as aerobics. Community gardens were incorporated into this zone, extending the area for children from both schools to learn about the benefits of medicinal plants. The area also includes an amphitheatre for community gathering and events.

Play park The dense residential area and adjacent schools made the introduction of a play area for children of all ages paramount. Local crèches and other schools in the area now use the park for outdoor learning sessions as well as providing much needed opportunities for play. he brainchild of the National Biodiversity Institute of South Africa and designed by Leon Kluge, the Living Beehive art installation was created to showcase South Africa's rich blend of natural, cultural and mineral wealth at the COP 17 congress that took place in Durban in 2011. The client's brief was to create an installation that was both garden and sculpture, and that portrayed the importance of water conservation. It also needed to act as a 'classroom' for children, and provide a unique experience for visitors walking through the green space.

The design The dome-shaped design was based on traditional Zulu huts, but with a high technology steel frame rather than wood. The living roof was planted with local grassland fauna that occurs only on the highlands of the Kwazulu Natal Drakensberg, which is the water catchment area for the city of Durban. Visitors step inside the beehive onto a steel see-through grid, where water trickles underfoot and plants rise up from the ground. Overhead plants hang from circular planter tubes and creepers cascade down to create a chandelier of foliage. These vertical gardens are planted with rare local cliff-hanging plants, seldom seen by the public, showcasing the living cliffs of Kwazulu Natal. The rivers here are the source of freshwater for Durban. As water is a constant obstacle and of short supply for the city, the purpose of the living beehive design was to teach school children the importance of conserving water, and educate them about the journey that water takes to finally flow from their home taps. Following on from the vertical gardens there is a lawned area in the middle of the beehive, a large open space with two openings either side to provide sunlight and a breeze. This area doubles up as a classroom where children can sit, surrounded by the elements that they are taught about. Materials As this was a one-off project, finding materials was a challenge. material fastened to it. Pockets were cut into the material, the plant was placed inside and then the material was sewn shut again. The outer layer of the beehive also used a woven polyester material, but of a much thicker grade, where seeds were sown into it and water-retaining gel poured between. The gel was watered to give the seeds a reserve of water for when the sprayers didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn on. A rotating ladder attached to the top and on a track at the bottom was added so that maintenance could be carried out more efficiently. The inside seating area was built from a mix of lawn and paving. As some areas inside were too dark, grow lights needed to be introduced to provide a better quality of light to the plants. Challenges The short timescale was a challenge in itself, but added to that there were massive storms during installation, and the rip winds played havoc with

planting schedules and the roof. All of the water used in the irrigation of the roof and vertical walls had to be collected below ground and recycled to be used in the garden again, to make it as water conserving as possible.

Client brief and background The National Department of Environmental Affairs administrates Expanded Public Works Programmes (EPWP). These programmes aim to alleviate poverty and unemployment in the country. It is an important avenue for labour absorption and income transfers to poor households. EPWP projects provide short-term and long-term work opportunities and training to unemployed and unskilled individuals. Training is an important element to increase the future employability of participants.

Hopetown and Strydenburg are two small rural settlements in the heart of the Karoo situated approximately half way between Cape Town and Johannesburg. The project falls within the Northern Cape Province, one of the largest and poorest provinces in South Africa. Despite the proximity to one of the largest rivers in the

The client brief called for three principal focuses: 1. The creation of employment opportunities, 2. Capacity building or skills development, and 3. Maximising the socio and economic impact of the project at the local level.

In an effort to maximise the impact of the project on the local community and to really

understand the context in terms of local needs, social issues and available skills resulted in an extensive and protracted consultation process. Amongst others this process included a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dream parksâ&#x20AC;? competition for school children that resulted in significant insight into their social problems and needs as well as their perceptions of the environment. Design philosophy The first point of departure for the design was purely functional and a direct response to the environment, existing site and pedestrian movement corridors between the residential area and the business districts. Simplicity and robustness were considered critical considering that all construction will be by unskilled local labour sourced from the communities. During the schools competition it became evident that the local understanding

of the area, ecology and environment is very basic. This presents an opportunity to tell the story of the local environment in a fun and playful manner by incorporating a narrative along the pathways, and designing the play area as a board game. We hope that the project will prompt the inquisitive nature of the children and educate them in a fun and informative way about their own environment. The park in Hopetown will focus on telling the story of the formation of the Karoo and the associated fossil record, whilst the park in Strydenburg, a setting with almost no potable water, will focus on ecological adaptation of plants, animals and people to the semi-desert environment Material and installation strategy As far as possible all materials had to be locally sourced and be extremely robust to limit vandalism. Sourcing materials in the local area proved more challenging than anticipated, and forced multiple reiterative design cycles and creative local solutions. The final designs in both parks respond to the principal movement patterns that the community follow between their homes and the local business district. The active and passive recreational spaces are articulated along these movement spines. Elements of colour and form interject into the pathways and draw the pedestrians into the various spaces. Limited knowledge of unskilled labour and equipment on site provided a challenge with specification of materials and installation methods. Other challenges included climatic conditions, procurement of materials with limited suppliers in close vicinity and transport between the sites which is approximately 60km apart. The planting strategy remains true to the indigenous only policy, using Olive, Karee and Thorn trees in the park. Hardy shrubs, planted between a double perimeter fence to protect them from wandering goats, define the park edges. All bricks were sourced from local clay brick-makers who still use age old technology to manufacture clay bricks. Robust, colourful play equipment pieces with a variety of colour were selected to add to the playfulness for the children of the local communities and to add colour to Northern Capeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s landscape.

The Site: Irene Dairy Farm Users: This public space serves as an ideally situated tourist attraction and hosts various recreation activities. The restaurants and picnic areas attract middle to higher income classes especially within the urban environment of Tswane, Centurion and Johannesburg. The space hosts fantastic environments for both users looking for a tranquil experience, or families that would like to take their younger children exploring.

An Introduction Irene Dairy farm as a historic cultural landscape hosting historic layers which manifest not only within the tangible characteristics of the environment but presents itself in the intangible heritage characteristics. Irene Dairy farm was not only part of the genesis of Pretoria but also the pioneer landscape on which experimental and innovative citrus farming and forest cultivation occurred.

Theoretical Premise: Heritage and Cultural Landscapes. The intangible historic significance of a cultural heritage site is identified as the ideal and original intent of the farm to act as an innovative and productive landscape. Innovation is key to enable the designer to decide how a 21stcentury food cultivation method can be applied to a historically significant site to act as a didactic whilst exposing and celebrating the historical layering of the site.

Present day, the site still acts as a working farm, albeit a fragmentation of its original scale and intent by merely entertaining the idea of farming through small-scale dairy production. Over the past century through the change in ownership of the farm and the fragmentation of the original Doornkloof farm, the site has lost its original intent of existing as a productive model farm and subsequently a big part of the intangible heritage significance was lost.

The Genus Loci of Irene Dairy Farm can possibly be attributed to the picturesque, pastoral and romantic landscape elements it contains, albeit these elements are not true to its appearance as a romantic landscape, but rather the product of fragmentation. The significance of the setting should be addressed on the one hand, while on the other, the loss of heritage significance in terms of intent and productivity. Agricultural land should always act as a productive landscape and within the greater context, it should also act as a heritage landscape. Borrowing from the previous intent of the farm, the intervention aims to acknowledge the existing Genus Loci and setting, whilst reintroducing the historical intent and vision of an innovative, productive and didactic landscape.

ABOUT MARYKE VAN DER MERWE Maryke moved to Pretoria after matriculating, determined to follow in her familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footsteps by pursuing a medical career. However, fate intervened and a few months later she knocked on the department of Architecture's doors at the University of Pretoria and started to embark on the journey to become a landscape architect. Whilst studying Maryke worked for Bernice Rumble and Gwen Theron respectively, and completed her Masters in Landscape Architecture in 2016. She is currently in the fortunate position to be working at Outer Space, under the mentorship of Alan Cooper who consistently expands horizons with his exceptional knowledge and understanding of integrating leading edge technology with design and architecture. Maryke enjoys research, analysis and urban design and would like to explore these areas whilst remaining in practice in future. The Brief: The Client’s brief was to create a landscape using predominantly indigenous tree and plant species with strong but understated ties to historical- and biblical references. Bosjes is situated within the winelands of the Breede Valley between Worcester and Ceres. Magnificent mountain ranges surround the farm. These mountains were the inspiration for the iconic chapel. cndv landscape architects were responsible for all of the external design, with Tanya de Villiers conceptualising the layout, and Herman de Lange developing the design and taking the project to completion. A plant search and rescue was conducted prior to the commencement of construction with several plant species, endemic to the area, being propagated and re-introduced as part of the overall plant palette. Plants noted in the Bible were specifically sourced for the project such as Olives, Citrus, Pomegranates, Cypress trees, Thorn Trees, Ficus trees, Willow trees grapes, Papyrus, Buxus, Salvia, Irises and roses to name a few. The landscape design creates individual but interconnected “rooms,” each forming a distinctive landscape space with a unique atmosphere. Visitors become lost within this vast and varied landscape as they explore, experience, rest and contemplate.

The chapel landscape relates via axes to the existing historic graveyard on site, as well as via a long axis through the farm up to the old manor house precinct. The chapel landscape relates subtly to references from the Bible, with its lush gardens, water features and ancient plant species. Water as a sacred and linking element is used throughout the design. A large pond reflects the chapel, and four streams link to the central apple tree of the Lush garden. One moves through the large gushing ‘parting of the seas’ water feature, complete with papyrus reeds and water lilies. Biblical references are subtle but moving through the site is likely to touch even the most incongruous of visitor. A brisk walk up the man-made ‘Dry mountain’ is enough to take your breath away, if the views from the top don’t do it! You may even find a reference to the hanging gardens of Babylon within the sunken secret tea garden. Further up the hill, The Bosjes Kombuis ( a bistro style restaurant), historic Manor House & new Guest Suites the landscape design relates much more to a Cape farm “werf” style. The primary focus of the “werf” space is a formal circular water element with linear trough mimicking a traditional “leivore”. Large existing trees add a layer of historic presence to the “werf” space.

The booking of large trees at Just Trees, was initiated in 2013 with a total of 540 trees kept and maintained by the nursery until the site was ready for the commencement of planting in July 2015. 126 mature fruit bearing Olive trees were planted on site and adds to the crop for the production of estate olive oil. Other fruit bearing trees include almonds, pistachios, honey locusts, citrus and pomegranates. Hard landscape surfaces have clean uncluttered lines, using natural materials in the classic tradition of Cape rural place making. Colours and finishes include white, off white, natural timber and muted earth tones, all as per the guiding principles set by the appointed Heritage Consultants. These materials are used in both the chapel and manor house precincts to link the spaces.

The blue slate used in the landscape was sourced from the northern parts of South Africa and speaks to the historic use of slate in the Western Cape. The packed stone blend used to clad the landscape walls, gatehouse and Bistro building, was specifically sourced to match the colours of the surrounding mountain backdrop. Discreet and integrated landscape lighting design adds a new dimension to the landscape and a memorable night time experience. The combination of landscape lighting and the play of shadows as well as reflections in the water features add another dimension to the lush landscape. A bespoke set of landscape elements and signage was purpose-designed for the development by the landscape architects, using natural timber and anodised aluminium.

EVERYTHINGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S COMING UP ROSES Set on site of the picturesque Vergelegen Estate, OvP revamps the historic rose garden so that it can reach its blooming potential.

The brief: The rose garden at Vergelegen was designed and installed in the 1980s and was well admired but no longer blooming to its full potential. The brief for OvP was to replace the full garden and to create a new world class rose garden that would enchant both novices and rosarians alike and hold its own within Vergelegenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portfolio of extensive cultivated gardens. It was important for the garden to be as captivating when viewed on arrival as the look and feel of each bloom up close. It was also important that the garden read as a cohesive element and not as a smarty box of heights and colour.

How this was achieved: The rose garden is located at the edge of the camphor forest on the site of the old tennis courts. The camphors form a magnificent amphitheatre to the south and west of the site, and to the north the rose terrace and screen planting provide a framed view of the homestead and historical camphor trees. The previous rose garden was a fraction of its current size and stood as an object within space. In response OvP designed the rose garden to inhabit the full space available and to respond to its unique and strikingly beautiful context. The octagon has a long history as a spatial informant at Vergelegen, so OvP chose this

formal geometry as the starting point for the layout. The centre of the octagon was set to align with the existing picnic building and a double path was set out either side of this axis. The central octagon is offset with concentric pathways which all intersect with diagonal paths. Together these pathways form meandering routes through the rose garden so that visitors may experience a wide array of the many different rose varieties on show and come to appreciate their individual colour and fragrance. On the approach the rose garden is screened from view and thevisitor turns a corner to be confronted with the rose garden in its entirety. It was therefore important to create a garden that is both striking and cohesive. The selection of rose varieties and their placement were carefully considered to provide a gradient of colour that transitions from reds, oranges, yellows to whites to light and deep pinks and purples and a gradient of height from the smallest miniatures in the centre to the tall spires and scramblers on the outskirts where the garden meets the Camphor Forest..

A cottage style herbaceous border with heritage roses frames the picnic building at the end of the axis. The central feature is a sculpture, entitle Aphrodite, by artist Stansilaw Trezbinski. Water drips from the sculpture into an octagonal pool of water that she stands in. The water feature was designed in collaboration with and built by Water in Motion.

The ‘Vergelegen yellow’ masonry pillars and rhythm of heavy overhead timber beams speak to the exposed ceiling beams within the homestead and to the language of architecture across the estate.

The architects had already been involved on the project for several years by this stage. Consequently, very little input could be made by the landscape architects to better integrate the buildings into the fabric of the landscape. At the time of their appointment onto the project the architecture had been finalised and construction had just begun.

local environment, GREENinc strongly suggested reducing the size of the gardens. This was motivated by a number of considerations including the availability of water, the remoteness of the farm and the ability to get plants and building material to the site, the cost of such an extensive garden, and the on-going ability to maintain a garden of that magnitude. The brief was thus, after many discussions, refined to accommodate the design of several garden spaces within the 30ha site based on the borehole capacity at that specific stage.

The primary residence at Marula Game Ranch is perfectly positioned to accommodate an incredible 360-degree view over an ox-bow bend of the Schaap River which runs below it. The objective and brief was to connect the wide, dry river-bed to the residences that were being built. After extensive and in-depth site analysis and research into the climate and the nature of the

Outer Walkway

The Charm Bracelet Instead of covering the already beautiful hill with endless lush and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;exoticâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gardens, GREENinc took a more restrained approach when considering the design. The core strategy behind the landscape is a linear navigation route informed by the idea of a charm bracelet. The metaphor of the bracelet consists as a primary axis/route or chain that gives order between the residence and the river with secondary elements/jewels that adorn and link up to the central route/chain. Design energy and focus was placed on the charms of the bracelet, moments scattered along the main navigation routes, providing an interval from the environment. These include arched walkway structures, curiosity courtyards, deep rock pools and terraced spaces that replicate the rocky ridges and open river bed that characterize the site. Courtyard structures are designed to provide cool retreat and depth of shade from the desert heat while providing protection to plants from cold winter winds. Pathways and structures alike are respectfully designed and sculpted to fit around and into existing rocks and trees, treading lightly in places while solidly grounding themselves in others. The approach to materials is simple and layered, mimicking textures of the immediate environment while proving a backdrop to the delightful play of shadow and light that bring life to each of the spaces. Water is an incredibly scare resource in the dry Namibian climate, so water was used to remind the visitor to this garden of the fragility of this environment and to highlight its importance.

Water is used to connect the charms and acts as a running narrative from one area of the garden to the next. Running for the most part in narrow steel or stone channels (so as to reduce evaporation) it animates the journey for the gardens visitors with sound and reflection of light drawing the visitor closer to the river below. This water comes from solar powered boreholes from the river bed. Waste water from filtration plants at the residence is also utilised. It is periodic, drying up at times and flushing out deeper ponds when in full flow. Ultimately the water is returned to the river below where it disappears into the deep expanses of sand to recharge the reservoir. The Role of the Landscape Architect Once appointed, GREENinc conducted a thorough survey of the site and river, using drone photography and GPS coordinated aerials. Detailed drawings mapping rock formations, specimen plants, invasive plant communities and other unique features of the site were produced and instruction to hoard off and protect most of the site was immediately issued to the building contractor. A survey of the existing plant species in the local vicinity was conducted, this would then help to highlight what would grow well on that specific site. This proved to be challenging as the vegetation found was mainly thorn trees, herbaceous plants and grass species- most of which are deciduous.

Barring the tree species, most of the plants found on the site were not commercially available. The design of the landscape was developed after consultation of plant specialists in both Namibia and South Africa to find plants that would best deal with the extreme heat and cold conditions.

GREENinc motivated to the client that they be appointed to manage the procurement of all the plants. This would include sourcing the plants across Southern Africa, checking for acceptable quality and transporting them to the site. An enormous task that landscape architect, Johannes van der Walt took on, sourcing over 150 000 plants. Plantwise were appointed to assist with the logistics around permits and transport. This procurement task was later expanded to include sourcing and importing all the required furniture for the landscape. The Challenges The challenges of working in remote locations are intricate but if resources, time and determination are applied to each problem, solutions can be found to produce unique and crafted designs. Time was one of the biggest challenges. The design team was given 6 months to conceptualize and fully document a US 6 000 000 project. The professional team was based primarily in Port Elizabeth while the client was based in Europe. Meetings had to be done via skype and a full time resident landscape architect needed to be based on the site in Namibia.

The next challenge was to find suitable contractors who had both experience and capacity to implement the project within a very ambitious client driven program of 9 months. GREENinc were eventually able to negotiate a joint venture between a local building company (Namkon) and the renowned Countryline Africa. Materials had to be carefully considered. The design of both hard and soft components had to be sustainably sourced. Stone, concrete, timber and steel were identified as suitable materials for the hard landscaping. All the stone used was harvested by hand from the farm. Concrete and brickwork was produced on site using river sand from the river below the site and aggregate from a local quarry. Timber and steel were sourced in Windhoek.

and additives including fertilizers and moisture retention agents.

Due to water issues on site and problems with consistency, some of the concrete had to be trucked in from Windhoek during the construction of the exposed aggregate pathways around the site. However, due to the long travelling distances, the concrete had to be treated with retardant to stop it from setting, which made it impossible to apply further retardant during the exposing of the aggregate. Innovative ways had to be formulated to achieve similar results, many of which unfortunately were not successful. Topsoil and compost, where not available in Namibia and the cost and sustainability of transporting them from South Africa was just not feasible. The soil had to thus be manufactured on site using clayier soils from local dams, river sand from the dry river bed

Water, in all its forms, proved to be the biggest challenge throughout the project installation. A series of boreholes and storage tanks were installed to take water from deep below the river bed and supply both irrigation and drinking water to the buildings and gardens. As many of the plants were being delivered fresh from all over South Africa they were in no way adapted to the harsh climate and there were several plant losses. By the time all the plants were finally in the ground winter was around the corner and the first months saw temperatures drop to -12Â°C at night. Many of the plants were lost to this.

Valley of the Pools - Zimbali Suppliers

Zimbali Coastal Resort is located amongst one of South Africa’s prime coastal nature reserves and has become one of the most prestigious Coastal Residential Estates in the world. It incorporates one of the three remaining forests in KwaZulu-Natal, providing a unique quality lifestyle within the natural environment.

pavilion, constructed of mixed earth concrete, gives a sense of arrival and accommodates a pick-up and drop-off golf cart shuttle service. The floating roof garden with waterwise planting species allows the structure to blend into and age alongside the surrounding environment.

The Valley of the Pools facility has provided Zimbali residents and visitors many years of fun, sun-lounging and pool-side entertainment as well as uninterrupted views of the beach and ocean. Situated on the beach front, the space between the facility and the beach is an important departure point and needs to accommodate, as well as stimulate, the visitor. The journey is as important as the destination. To visit any facility should be a pleasant journey. The brief, which became the main philosophy for the Valley of the Pools upgrade, is threefold:

Parking Area Upgrade – An additional 35 golf cart parking spaces and 33 vehicle parking bays will allow an average of 230 extra visitors to the site. In peak season, the use of the Resort’s shuttle and golf cart service will ease vehicle congestion to the facility. The additional planted indigenous trees will provide shade to these areas.

Change of Mode – The visitor will cross the threshold over a water feature to discover the Valley of the Pools. The ‘floating’ roof garden, constructed of mixed earth concrete, allows the structure to blend into the surrounding environment and announce a memorable entrance. Shaded Circular Nodes – The circular pergola structures will create interest in the landscape and direct the visitor to the unique facilities, whilst shading them from the sun.

Family Day Beds – These cosy large ‘dayloungers’, adjacent to the existing kids’ pool, provide space for the whole family to enjoy the facility. The family daybeds are constructed with timber slats that mimic a sheltered bird’s nest.

Restaurant Upgrade with Viewing Deck – The increase in user demand called for an upgrade to be done to the kitchen area and provision of additional serving space. The extended deck and viewing deck above the restaurant provide an additional 105 seats. The timber-constructed viewing deck offers a distinct event space with cantilevered vistas over the Valley of the Pools, Indian Ocean and the coastal forest.

Waterlily Gazebos - The unutilised lake becomes the prime-most visual identity element of the Valley of the Pools. The timber constructed ‘waterlily-shaped’ gazebos appear to float on the lake surrounded by waterlilies. The initial phase of the project will incorporate one Waterlily Gazebo.

Kids’ Pool with Infinity Edge and Water Lounge - The existing kids’ pool will be upgraded with an infinity edge and a shallow water lounge extension, creating a unique experience with the water.

The development consists of residential housing, a retirement village and a private school. The existing 17th Century manor house is being restored to its original splendour and will offer a variety of luxurious facilities, allowing residents to relax and spend time with family and friends. A new fully-equipped sports centre with a squash court, two tennis courts, a swimming pool and change rooms will be included in the development. Vision of landscape design The landscape will form a sense of place with an exclusive character which portrays quality with a balance between aesthetic values, security and sustainability. The objective is to create and sustain an environmental awareness for all users. The development must be cost effective. Space/place must be created for people to enjoy comfortable living with a unique cultural and historical character. Background Just a 40-minute drive from Cape Town’s CBD is the enchanting new development, Clara Anna Fontein. Sometime ago a young man named Hendrik Olivier married his love, Beatrix Verwey. They lived together on a farm in bountiful Durbanville with their 2 daughters named Clara and Anna. Sadly, shortly after Anna was born, Henrik passed away. Beatrix then became the first woman farmer in the Cape and decided to call the farm she lived on, Clara Anna Fontein.

Until a year ago the entire farm was a game park with roaming antelope, zebra and blue wildebeest. The original 235ha of Game Park is in the process of being developed into an exclusive lifestyle estate. This creates an opportunity to re-establish Renosterveld and endemic fynbos. The colourful planting pallet proofs the general conception the renosterveld is dull and boring, wrong. Although the open areas and parks are situated within the urban development, it makes the development fit right into the natural surroundings. Since few renosterveld plants are commercially available, most of the plants have been propagated especially for this project. A total of over 500 000 plants will be planted on completion. The 8 different water-wise planting palette mixes were combined in such a way that

each mix will always have a seasonal flowering species. Areas of low activities will be hydro-seeded mixed with bulbs and restioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, to keep costs to the minimum. Specific endemic wetland planting are specified for damper areas such as retaining ponds. Due to the severe water restrictions in the Western Cape, the planting program has been extended until there is sufficient water on site by means of 3 planned boreholes. The main focal areas such as the entrance where watering can be done by water truck filled from a farm dam, are currently being planted. Hard landscaping Being inspired by the natural environment and elements such as rock, wood and water, the landscape design was created with strong

organic undertone but with a contemporary application. Retaining structures such as gabions are used to establish level areas for activities as the site has an extensive slope. We are using gabions filled with brown stone and natural packed stone as a theme through all hard landscaping elements such as water features, benches and bollards to compliment the architecture of the gatehouse and other Werf components. All roads, cycle routes and pedestrian surfaces are paved with exposed aggregate paving to establish the natural ambiance of the landscape design. Timber footbridges and boardwalks with in the open space create an opportunity for the residents to become part of the natural landscape within this urban development. The landscape forms an integral part of this development. hen Johannesburg-based GREENinc Landscape Architecture took on The Houghton luxury apartment block project for client Asvid Holdings, the company had to take a view from two very different angles. On one side of the development, apartments overlook Johannesburg’s Houghton Golf Course, with the building’s two wings lying next to the 7th and 12th holes. As well as a great view of the golf course, apartments on that side of the block have private gardens with uninterrupted views,

heated swimming pools with awnings to protect residents’ privacy, and outdoor areas suitable for all kinds of al fresco entertainment. On the street side, however, space was utilised for more practical reasons, providing visitor parking and access to secure basements for vehicles, while pedestrians enter groundfloor units and lifts via garden-like spaces. Each seven-storey stack of apartments has its own lift, eliminating the need for common corridors at the ‘rear’ of the building. However, from both sides of every unit residents can enjoy views across the golf course and towards Houghton Ridge. Large plane trees already lined the pavements in front of The Houghton, while on the street-side, with its extended sidewalk and cobbled avenue, a lot of space is dedicated to access for vehicles. However, priority was given to pedestrians by removing all kerbs so the cobbled avenue flows throughout all areas. GREENinc introduced planting to soften the expanse of paving. However, these had to be lifted in raised planters and loose pots as the entire area sits on basement slab. These planters and pots helped to give scale to the flat landscape lying in front of the high

elevations of the building, while also offering seating for residents on a hot day. At H12, which is the wing adjacent to the 12th hole, the hardiest of plant varieties were chosen as the area becomes very hot in the summer yet sits in the shadow of the building throughout winter. Despite this, the chosen palette for the shared spaces is full of colour and lush greens. GREENinc complemented the landscaping with custom furniture, including benches and lighting bollards. Perimeter security also fell under the company’s scope, and a security fence was erected around the entire

development. Clearvu fencing was chosen to least obstruct views, alternated with stone walls and planted light-boxes. On the golf course side, ground-floor units open on to private gardens and enjoy amazing views across the golf course. Originally, the space was conceived as a long promenade that would connect all the units to the golf course and a hotel at the development’s centre, with private ‘balconies’ on a raised level separating private from semi-private space. However, a limited budget meant the first phase merely comprised of large areas of planted embankments and lawns. Hardscape elements such as swimming pools and decks were also placed in the architect’s scope, making co-ordination difficult. The second and third phases of the project involved work on the apartment gardens. The H12 gardens were designed as large balconies, which terrace down to the golf course. Planting and pools were then elegantly added to the garden areas, with services such as pool pumps tucked under the upper terrace. As the step between the lower and upper terraces was less than 800mm, balustrades

were not required but still hid the security fence from view. The lower terrace is within the common area and allows movement between units as well as providing access for maintenance staff. Stairs to each unit feature custom-designed gates, helping to prevent children from wandering into adjacent units with the accompanying danger of them falling into neighbouring swimming pools. Although the client’s brief was to maximise views of the golf course, this factor had to be balanced by the need to ensure each garden enjoys a good degree of privacy from neighbouring units. Alternate timber screens and hedges help to provide privacy between units at ground level. To allow residents privacy from units on higher floors, timber pergolas with retractable awnings were added above swimming pools. Scattered trees also help to block views from above.

At the H7 wing by the 7th hole, the terrace style was replaced by large retaining walls for units next to the irrigation dam. Softer raised banks were also used in places with minimal level differences to the golf course. In Phase 3, swimming pools were alternated with sunken entertainment spaces known as firepits. Materials used for the hardscaping elements of the gardens consisted of cut stone and gravel, with timber and steel used for all vertical elements, while powder-coated aluminium was used on all planting area edges. Plants used were a mix of grassland palettes and cape bulbs. To separate the bottom of the gardens in the H7 block and the golf course, a small stream was constructed with dense wetland planting introduced to animate the space and help to purify and aerate the irrigation dam water. More spatial definition was required at some of the larger units, so raised steel planters,

water features and large timber pergolas were designed. GREENinc was responsible for all external areas in The Houghton project, including service co-ordination, surface slab drainage and reticulation, paved surfaces, timber decks, pools and gardens. The Brief The brief was simple enough in that the design was to take architectural cues, replicate material use in the structure and create enough usable space on a challenging sloped site. Concrete was a central theme of the project with much of the architecture making use of this versatile material. Concrete was a requirement in the landscape to create unity between the building and landscape. The second requirement was to make use of the site and create as much level garden and lawn areas as possible. Level surfaces were not part of the existing site which had a height difference of 20m down a rocky slope along the Bedfordview Ridge. The design objectives were to formulate a proposal that worked with the architectural style and use of materials, make full use of the site and a solution that would be workable for the client and their family. The main challenge of the project was evident in the site, a steep rocky slope with a 20metre drop from the highest to the lowest point. Along with this, there were no level areas, where the

existing structure was demolished with a new structure taking its place. Geotechnical services were required to stabilise certain rock faces which left these as exposed gunite cement. These exposed surfaces were seen to be in stark contrast to the natural features of the site, and it was decided to plant over the exposed gunite with living walls to form green carpets of growth cascading down the gunite walls. A natural exposed rock surface was used to install climbing walls with a secure launch platform and autobelay system. The steep site was rendered negotiable with steel mentis grate catwalks which leads one to the climbing wall launch area and a viewing deck at the highest point on the site. The elevated catwalk allows for minimal intrusion in the landscape below and light to still provide adequate growing conditions for planting. The catwalk provides a comfortable means to access the site while in keeping with the robust and industrial materials used on the project. A small lawn area was installed on the ground floor level adjacent to the entrainment area and indoor pool, which necessitated the construction of a 4m retaining wall with the neighbouring property.

The lawn terrace is framed by a concrete panel feature wall with Led strip lighting to emphasize the panels at night. The panels were hung on a steel sub-frame system with panels of varying dimensions being set slightly apart on varying planes and with varying gaps. The play on shadows adds further dimension to the feature wall. The central atrium with shallow reflection pond was included to add water to the scheme. The pond was given a shallow mesh covered with pebbles to maintain a safe environment for young children. A small childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play area was set back from the boma area with a steel play fort, and accessed via the raised catwalk. The boma area of mixed chipped concrete, steel and timber further continues the material theme of the project. Planting was 85% indigenous and well suited to the geographical and geological conditions of the site.

4 Harmonisation From the first visit to the site on Monaghan farm, which forms part of the Rhenoster Spruit Conservancy, it was clear that the main design generator should be nature. The design process evolved from a biomimetic approach to design, where nature was used as model, measure and mentor to solve problems and inform decisions regarding the marriage of architecture and landscaping. The context provided ample inspiration of natural designs and processes that were applied to the architecture which in turn informed the landscaping design. Careful consideration of the interaction between architecture, planted landscape and indigenous landscape contributed to the harmonious integration of the man-made into the natural splendour of the site.

The Fog stand beetle gave cues on the importance of water harvesting. All storm water run-off from the roofs are harvested and collected in an underground tank and is used to irrigate the strictly indigenous garden. During times of drought, household greywater can be redirected to collect in the underground tank and used for irrigation and the natural pool, where the water is circulated through a living ecosystem of plants, can be recycled and used as household water. To integrate the architecture and its inhabitants with nature the threshold between nature and architecture was blurred with courtyards planted with indigenous shrubbery that act as the green lungs of the house.

In colder winter months the resulting warm water can be redirected into the under floor heating system to support the passive space heating. The water harvesting and recycling mentioned above also contributes to this factor of the house. The intention was producing a building that integrates well with its environment by mimicking an organism, its participation in a larger context and the process and cycle of the greater environment the manmade was successfully integrated into its natural landscape and context.

Once the earthworks was completed there was a vast amount of bulk material left which would have had to be carted away. After some deliberation it was decided to use the excess material in a rammed earth wall that became a big feature of the overall project. It also created an opportunity for the surrounding community to develop a useful skill set and to become part of the building process. The local community members where trained on site to familiarise them with different construction materials, workmanship of the form work as well as due diligence. The erection of some test blocks was done under the supervision of an expert in the field and the specific mixtures of lime and soil to provide adequate strength to the wall explained. Evolutionary paradigm Monaghan Farm is situated close to the Cradle of Humankind. The rich history of the farm and the area’s link to the prehistoric past informed the eco-estate’s vision of only developing three percent of the 520 hectare farm. It was therefore important for the project to sit quietly on the rolling grasslands of the Highveld and embrace its surroundings, history and nature. Placemaking performance Instead of public performance and activities in an urban context the focus was on creating a space where the daily performance of raising and growing as a family can happen naturally. Open plan living spaces allow for meaningful interactions and the ingress of the natural landscape allows for an ever present connection to nature.
