AGENDA What is the One Thing the Industry Needs to do Better in 2017?

FEBRUARY FAVOURITES Stone, Concrete and Marble

THE RISE AND RISE OF ARTIFICIAL GRASS ADVANCEMENTS IN BATTERY OPERATED EQUIPMENT

A BETTER FINISH THAN ANY OTHER MOWER… AUTOMATICALLY. Robotic mowers suited to commercial properties, municipality green spaces, sports clubs and hotels now available.

CUTS ALL TYPES OF LAWNS

MANAGES PASSAGES

Large wheels and clever chassis design ensures perfect results even on rough lawns. Combining several mowers side by side enables cutting of very large lawn areas.

Husqvarna Automower® is equipped with technology that detects narrow passages and ensures it navigates safely through even the narrowest gaps.

MANAGES STEEP SLOPES

NO NOISE

Thanks to its optimised design and smart behaviour, Husqvarna Automower® can cope with slopes up to 45% (24°).

Husqvarna Automower does its job quickly, quietly and efficiently. The noise level is so low you can operate the mower during the night while you sleep.

ADVANCED NAVIGATION

WORKS IN THE RAIN

The robust boundary wire signalling system and onboard GPS ensures Husqvarna Automower® always stays within the working area and covers the entire lawn, even in highly complex areas.

Husqvarna Automower® gives great cutting results in any type of weather. It is designed to withstand the harsh working environment and its sensitive parts are safely protected from rain, as well as dirt and grass clippings.

AUTOMOWER® CONNECT

IRREGULAR MOVEMENT PATTERN

Being in control of your Husqvarna Automower® from a remote location is essential. Automower® Connect offers this benefit through your iOS or Android Smartphone, enabling you to remotely start/stop the mower and configure product settings. It will notify you if it stops for any reason and contains GPS based map localization with a theft tracking function.

It cuts from different directions to create a smooth carpet-like surface and changes its route back to its charger in a varying movement pattern in order to avoid damaged lawn and ugly tracks along boundary and guide wires.

NEWS SHED THE SOUTH AFRICAN LANDSCAPERS INSTITUTE (SALI) LAUNCHES FANTASTIC NEW WEBSITE WWF HEADQUARTERS WINS GREEN BUILD AND SUSTAINABILITY AWARD The new head office of the WWF in Braamfontein has just won an award for green build and sustainability construction. The WWF building demonstrates dedication towards finding practical sustainable solutions that fit within a strict budget, without being constrained by it. The design team had to adapt and change the design to suit, in some instances opting less for technological solutions and more for passive design, and in so doing the project stayed largely within its construction budget of approximately R8.5 million, which was funded from the organisation’s reserves and supplemented with applicable sustainable product and material sponsors. The result is a building that disproves the idea that building green should be expensive. Furthermore, a green building translates into lower operating costs and a reduction of the intrinsic environmental impact of the building, which in turn confirms the organisation’s values. The planted roof garden for recreation and breaks is fed by a drip irrigation system. An attenuation tank under the timber decking collects and channels rainwater from the roof to storage in the basement. The roof top garden was a very simple collection of

indigenous water wise plants from the Highveld. In comparison to the previous building, there are a lot more facilities, including boardrooms and recreational facilities on the roof. The indoor air quality is fresh and all materials are non-pollutant and free of toxins. Dean Muruven, WWF water source areas programme manager, based in the Braamfontein offices, says the central city location also has a special culture that the staff enjoy: “Owning a green building gives the employees a sense of pride as it feels like it brings us closer to our values as an organisation, particularly with some of the unique features contained within our building.” www.wwf.org.za

Described on its dazzling new website as “The only representative body for, and the national voice of, the landscape industry” We would like to introduce all industry members to a fantastic and well trusted association. The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) was formed in 1984 and is a national body with regional offices serving landscape contractors and suppliers. SALI was formed by a group of progressive landscapers who saw the potential of the landscape industry in South Africa. They believed that the true potential could only be realised if landscape contractors showed unity, produced excellent work and projected a professional image. You can find their Constitution, list of selected suppliers, blog and SALI awards results on their new and easy to navigate website. Visit www.sali.co.za for more.

FIELDTURF, WORLD LEADER IN SYNTHETIC TURF SPORTS PRODUCTS ENTERS S.A. MARKET the distribution and production agreements during a recent visit to South Africa.

In a major boost to the upgrading of South African artificial turf sports facilities, the world’s largest producer of synthetic sports and landscape surfacing is entering the local market. FieldTurf, part of the 130-year-old Paris Stock Exchange-listed Tarkett Group, has signed a distribution agreement for FieldTurf sports products with Johannesburg-based Fintrex, a leader in the synthetic sports surfaces market in Southern Africa for the past 30 years; and a manufacturing agreement for artificial turf with Free State-based Nouwens Carpets, a leader in the carpet industry since 1962. CORNUBIA’S WIN-WIN REHABILITATION SOLUTION Riparian areas – the strip of land on either side of a river – are an important element of healthy rivers. They provide essential habitats for wildlife while also acting as buffers between upland areas and open water. Having the correct plants in place assists in filtering pollutants from the water and provides a barrier to erosion. The shade afforded by the vegetation helps to reduce water temperatures which, in turn, leads to better oxygen levels to support aquatic animals. “Years of human settlement, including sugar cane farming, have left the banks of the Ohlanga River in Cornubia degraded and filled with alien plants,” notes Bongani Gumede, Corporate Director of Tongaat Hulett Developments. “We recognise the importance of a healthy riparian zone and for this reason, we have teamed up with Wildlands Conservation Trust to rehabilitate the stretches of land on either side of the river.” “By removing the alien vegetation and replacing it with indigenous flora,” adds David Moldenhauer, Strategic Manager – Technical Support of Wildlands “we can restore the valuable habitat to its original state.” But it’s not just any indigenous plants which are used. Thorough research has been undertaken to ensure that the correct historic plants – those which used to be in this location before the sugar cane fields – are planted.

8

Pro Landscaper Africa / February 2017

On top of this, the Wildlands project is not only aimed at environmental restoration. The initiative is also creating jobs and providing skills and training to the local community. There are several different programs that they have been developed which aim to empower the community. The first is a team of individuals who have been employed to work on the rehabilitation of the riparian zone itself. These people clear the floodplain tract on either side of the banks of the river using the “chop and drop” method: the alien vegetation is chopped down and left on the ground in place. This saves on the cost of removal and, perhaps more importantly, the cut material left on the ground makes an excellent mulch for the newly planted indigenous species while also supressing weed growth. It specifically isn’t burnt as this would be a waste of perfectly good nutrients for the soil.

workers can go forward and apply their trade as woodsmen and subcontract their services to residents and businesses in the area. This is the very definition of a business incubator.” In addition, the local community is to be involved in growing the desired indigenous plants. Members are to be trained in the cultivation of the specific plants that will restore health and balance as well as increase the biodiversity of the floodplain. “We are not looking at the easy to grow landscaping plants, although in time we expect that the growers will also be able to provide nursery services to the greater Cornubia region, including residents and businesses.”

To date, 31 jobs for the alien plant clearing have been created for people from the local community. A new team has just been trained to use chainsaws and both Wildlands and Tongaat Hulett aim to use this training and practical application as a basis to incubate a future working environment for those trained. “It is essentially the same as teaching a man to fish,” explains Moldenhauer, “and he will never go hungry again. The hope is that these skilled

INTRODUCING THE CLAY BRICK ASSOCIATION The true cost of owning a home is measured by how much it costs to maintain and operate. Clay brick fulfils the requirements for solid quality construction, providing homeowners with the most energy-efficient and costeffective solutions in the long-term. Clay bricks are natural and produced without the use of artificial additives. This underlying harmony with natural elements makes clay brick particularly useful in a landscape setting. In addition to being made from all natural materials, clay bricks are frequently salvaged, cleaned and reused, making them a more sustainable choice. Garden and landscape structures can be exposed to extreme conditions. This is where hard fired bricks are desirable because they’re resistant to weather elements and aren’t susceptible to chemicals, oil, petrol or grit. These bricks retain their original colour without being affected by ultraviolet light, they’re salt-resistant and

also provide a non-slip surface through their abrasive characteristics. For urban development and landscape architects, design freedom with clay brick is almost unlimited. Available in a wide palette of colours and textures, clay brick is suited to a broad spectrum of tastes and lifestyles. Clay brick is certainly the best choice for the discerning homeowner. The CBA expand awareness, knowledge and support for clay brick masonry with the goal of ensuring local property owners achieve long life, good value and sustained performance of brick walls and paving. The CBA provides strategic direction to its members through an investment in research and educational initiatives regarding energy efficiency, reduced emissions, green building and sustainable construction. are currently facing in the landscape industry is the fact that it’s not a regulated industry and it’s not a statutory requirement to be a member of SALI or any other governing body, this coupled with the current state of the country’s economy and demands from trade unions is making business very challenging at present. The union’s influence the staff, make unrealistic promises and create expectations which cause staff to become disgruntled and unmotivated, having a negative impact on the employees performance as well as creates a poor perception from the clients side. Being an unregulated industry it means that the larger landscaping companies who are members of SALI have to compete against smaller bakkie brigades/garden service companies that don’t always abide by SALI’s protocol. Landscaping and being a gardener is also not always perceived to be an expertise as “we can pick up a casual worker on the side of the road who can do my gardening / landscaping as well as anything else we require for a lesser fee”, hence the reason for a more regulated industry with statutory requirements and the formation of a bargaining council, would definitely assist the landscaping industry going forward to be more recognised as a professional industry.

A saying which we have all come to know and apply in our business dealings. In view of our current water crisis, it is time to have another look at this principal. REPORT:

THE RISE AND RISE OF

Artificial turf has come a long way since its inception. Here is a look at the journey of artificial grass and its advancements within the green industry, its pertinence to the market and the characteristics that make it a viable alternative to real lawn.

Talking to the market leaders in the artificial grass industry, technological advances mean artificial grass now looks more natural than ever. From the look, to the feel, and even the behaviour of the grass, more and more companies are capable of replicating the real thing, meaning there are now some excellent surfaces available to landscapers. It is now becoming the norm for artificial grass to look natural. Products available now are more realistic in their appearance than they’ve ever been. Five years ago the realistic look and feel of products was something we almost considered a USP, but most manufacturers are now producing artificial grass which looks more natural. This in turn is making the market increasingly competitive.

All about the base SyntheticLawn’s Michael Merryweather explains… ‘Synthetic Turf should be laid on a suitable substrate to maximise the longevity and functionality of the product. The base forms two major functions in delivering a solid platform that drains. By using the correct layer works one ensures that the turf area remains flat and can handle human traffic without becoming uneven over time. It is also important that the water drains efficiently after rain. Although different turf companies have different methods of handling base construction, it appears that most top companies use very similar processes in their construction. It starts off with the excavation of existing grass and organic top soil. The Insitu ground is then plate compacted. Next is the importing and compaction of a gravel type base. Commercial gravel like G4 works best and will give

Shape shifting Shaped yarns are becoming very popular, as they provide structure to the uprights yarn which keeps them standing upright’ explains Michael. ‘Various shapes are used from V, C and even S Shape yarns. The industry is not stopping though with constant innovations on new yarns & backing systems to create the perfect synthetic turf. The biggest improvement in artificial grass is the introduction of dual yarn systems that do not require infill. A curly root zone yarn was introduced along with the standard straight yarn giving you a dual yarn system. The curly root zone replaces the need for sand or rubber and provides softness to the product whilst keeping it upright.’ www.prolandscaper.co.za

Synthetic Lawn www.syntheticlawn.co.za Duraturf’s Technical and Market Expert Ayden Shrives explains that Duraturf uses international yarn leader Tencate for their raw materials, to ensure durable, UV stable products best suited to our climatic conditions. He believes this relationship keeps their development team in touch with colour and yarn shape trends. ‘It must be noted’ says Ayden, ‘that shaped yarn profiles will cause yarns to stay permanently flat once the spine is bent. This has been seen in the sports market where we have seen a full circle from spherical yarns to shaped and now back to spherical/ diamond yarns. He is of the opinion that shaped yarns fail in time. True colours One of the biggest improvements to artificial grass for landscapers has been the introduction of a ‘thatched zone’ (an integral root zone including lighter shade yarns) and the vast choice of colours that the surface is now offered in. Most suppliers are now using different shades

www.prolandscaper.co.za

Easigrass www.easigrass.co.za of brown and green in the root zone as well as two types of green in the upright yarn. This gives a more realistic grass look with up to four different colours. The use of a now, more realistic blade is also aiding this improvement. Easigrass has recently taken the lead to redesign its entire range of 9 artificial grasses to better suit the South African market. Herve Truniger (Trigger), National Accounts Manager for Easigrass South Africa, says ‘the decision to redesign the 9 grass types was based on the fact that South African grass doesn’t look like European grass in either colour or texture. In South Africa, the best known grasses are Kikuyu and Berea which have far broader blades. He adds ‘Easigrass South Africa has also introduced a South African DIY range of artificial grass known as Easi-Green.’ There is now a push towards an authentic and aesthetically viable alternative where in the past the focus was mainly on sports fields and adapting this surface by fibrillating it to make it ‘landscaping’ viable.

Import, export Different companies have different perspectives on the best place to import artificial grass from when it comes to quality. The Netherlands, China and the USA are all now consistent manufacturers of quality products. Where to import artificial grass from might depend on the specification and requirement of the product. If you are thinking of importing, it’s also worth looking into whether the manufacturer has the backing of any trade associations or industry bodies. Ayden Shrives agues the point however, that artificial grass manufactured in South Africa is the best option. ‘Duraturf is the only complete artificial turf grass producer in South Africa. Our company ensures that products are

Fintrex’s MD, Eunice Forbes thinks so … ‘I would definitely say that artificial grass is more accepted than it has ever been, because of how much more visible it is – and a lot of that visibility can be attributed to sport. People are certainly making the link between the products they see at sports and leisure clubs and the surfaces they can have installed in their own gardens.”

Leading the field As the quality of artificial turf has increased, so too has its use in sport. Gone are the days of football pitches covered in sand, giving player’s carpet burns and looking unnatural. Today artificial grass has been used in the Champions League for football, the Olympics for hockey and is a sought after surface for sports clubs and schools. With fake turf featuring in such

New growth There are a number of new products coming to market that may be of interest to landscapers. That’s quite an exciting new product.” Another new trend that companies are looking to develop is artificial grass that has

16

Pro Landscaper Africa / February 2017

been designed to look like decking. This can be useful for landscapes where a client wishes to have a garden that is easy to maintain and clean, but doesn’t necessarily want solely artificial grass. A decking styled grass can be used alongside the turf to complement it and stop the garden from looking overly green. UK Company Evergreens is excited by the potential of the product and informs us saying “One of our new products imitates decking – it’s low slip and a great way to invigorate tired wood, as you can simply install over the top of pre-existing decking. It’s still a market with room for plenty of growth, so we will see many developments over the next few years.” Future In terms of what lies ahead, artificial grass is only going to become more realistic. Stuart says the industry is constantly improving: “We’ve got some exciting new stuff to come through next year. There are some new models and new shaped yarns, and some really realistic looking artificial grasses so the range will improve. It’s a constant evolution.” We asked a range of artificial grass companies for their sales figures from 2015 compared with predicted sales for 2016. On average, the industry predicts to sell 35% more square metres of artificial grass than last year. This is a huge rise and with the industry showing no signs of slowing down, proving artificial grass has moved past being seen as just acceptable, and is now a serious option.

INTERVIEW How would you describe the type of gardens you design through Paul Odendaal Designs? And, what do you perceive to be the most important aspects to take into consideration when designing a garden? I am a slave driver of passion! Plants are the first priority with my designs, and this is guided by location and orientation, the client’s expectations and management of their expectations. Understanding plants and climates is essential, indigenous is always important but what is more important is the right plant for the right reason, in the right place. Not all plants are equal in implantation of key turn projects, certain plants do well in certain areas because they relate to the climate. Cape Town for example has a Mediterranean climate on the Atlantic seafront, so does various parts of the peninsula. Some parts however are more arid and others, lusher. Currently I manage two hotels with 5-star ratings (Ellerman House Hotel and One and Only Cape Town). Their gardens are my responsibility with certain conditions to the job. I strive for a garden with monthly and seasonal interest complimenting the design, sometimes even succeeding in prompting nostalgia for the visitor by showcasing various flowers or scents. Keeping ideas fresh and incorporating plants (from vegetables to herbs and ornamental plants) helps me create sustainable gardening practises which are also pleasing to the eye.

Another point is to be consistent with the service you provide. When it comes to suppliers, how do you go about selecting the best products for your gardens? Build a relationship with your suppliers and know their products. Plant mixes are important as soil is the foundation for any garden, plus the way the plants are grown will be the determining factor if the installation is going to be a success or not. What are some of the trickier aspects of working with contractors on your projects, and how can we as an industry better the communication for concept to delivery? Working as a team, not for you alone. Communication between parties, expected service delivery standard and pride in the job

these be used to create a lush hanging garden effect to swamp the house in greenery. Tropical foliage tends to burn in the heat high on the slopes of Tamboerskloof where fynbos comes into its own, but the pool wall was a fairly shaded space. Adding a line of Cape Holly (Ilex mitis) for privacy added to the cooling effect so this has been planted with hardier indigenous ferns, Cyperus grasses, Toad Lilies (Tricyrtis formosana) and in a nod to the client’s request for yellow & red, Lotus berlothii cascaded over the plasterwork in a matter of months. After reading the above, evidently the garden is not 100% fynbos - exotic species were incorporated for specific reasons for example the toad lilies are there to give a tropical feel with their lush leaves & orchid-like flowers; a large Leopard tree (Caesalpinia ferrea) was inset in the patio paving at the client’s specific request while prostrate rosemary & smaller-growing lavender were added around the lawn to add to the fragrant nature of the garden. Nevertheless, all exotics were only chosen if they could handle the hot conditions of the site in a low rainfall environment.

he brief for this central London roof terrace was to construct a high end contemporary usable space for the family to enjoy.

Background Paul Newman Landscapes was contacted by the clients in March 2015 to undertake the design and build of their large roof terrace in central London. After several meetings a design was presented along with costings for the build. As a starting point the services of a structural engineer were utilised to assess the existing roof structure. A survey was undertaken, and the outcome was to fit new steel beams to span across the roof space, which would allow the new design to ‘float’ over the existing roof.

together with artificial grass incorporating a putting strip. LED remote control lighting featured throughout the design. For the flooring, enhanced grain Millboard composite decking was chosen in smoked oak and carbonised charred to create contrasting walkways and define the space. Glass reinforced plastic planters were the choice throughout with a carbon grey and white matte finish. For the boundary Griselinia littoralis was planted, a tough New Zealand evergreen shrub ideal for windy locations. Clipped olive trees surrounded by buxus cubes add height and make a feature of the dining area. The roof terrace was divided down the middle by an existing wall, to which an artificial green wall and stainless steel water feature were installed on the lounge side. A deck walkway links the other half of the terrace where a play lawn was installed for the children, together with a golf putting strip complete with flag and cup. For the kitchen and dining area a bespoke kitchen unit was constructed complete with barbecue and rotisserie, under counter fridge, sink and stainless steel cupboards. Tall cylindrical planters with clipped buxus and a low built-in planting bed complete this area. Collingwood low voltage LED lighting features throughout the terrace and is operated on a remote control system to allow individual control over the zones. For the front planters, an RGB colour change LED strip was installed underneath which is Wi-Fi controlled from a smartphone app. This adds a bit of fun and drama to the lounge and lawn areas, as it can also be set to pulse to music.

Challenges As it was a roof terrace build above the fifth floor with huge quantities of materials required, access issues in and out of the building had to be overcome without disturbing the tenants; the only real solution was to use a furniture hoist. This piece of kit is only the size of a transit van so avoided the need for a crane on site including costly permits and road closures. Three parking bays were suspended, one for the hoist and the other two as a loading bay for materials as they arrived. Timing of deliveries was also crucial, so everything was ordered to be delivered to site on the same day. Two crews were armed with walkie-talkies for communication which made the whole process run smoothly from ground to roof. www.prolandscaper.co.za

EDUCATE

THE ADVANCEMENT IN

BATTERY POWERED TOOLS Advancements in battery life and performance mean that battery powered machinery is now a legitimate option when choosing kit. Positives including lighter weight, noise reduction and environmental benefits are becoming more readily accessible without having to sacrifice power Battery powered kit has come to play a role in both domestic and professional toolboxes in recent years, favoured for providing a quieter, cleaner method of garden maintenance. The technology has some way to go before it replaces petrol or plug-in electric products,

THE MAIN LIMITATION OF LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES IS REDUCED POWER – A MAJOR ISSUE FOR THOSE WISHING TO DO MORE THAN GARDEN PRUNING. THIS MAY NOT BE THE CASE FOR MUCH LONGER, HOWEVER the main disadvantage of battery power being reduced performance compared to its noisier counterparts. The ongoing evolution of these batteries is key to why the technology has been able to break into the mainstream market, as they become more efficient and cheaper to run than their rivals. The first compact rechargeable battery, the nickel-cadmium invented in 1899, is still in use today owing to its low cost – but with several drawbacks including low energy density and use of toxic chemicals, constant growth is needed to surpass the battery’s origins and provide the power supply required by today’s user. The is a market in which 46 Pro Landscaper Africa / February 2017

innovation must be sought and boundaries must be pushed to bring battery power in line with the performance of petrol. The technology moved forward to the nickel-metal hydride battery, giving twice the energy density with no increase in weight, and proving to be the upgrade from nickelcadmium. However, these new batteries still had their flaws – the most prominent of which was a high rate of discharge, losing around 4% of charge per day – which kept the nickel-metal hydride one step behind alternative sources of power. The most modern innovation is the lithium-ion battery. Boasting a higher energy density, lower weight and lower discharge rate than its predecessors, the lithium-ion has bolstered the domestic and professional markets and can be found in many of the battery powered machinery and tools available to landscapers today. Despite its obvious improvements on previous models, the main limitation of lithium-ion batteries when used in tools such as chainsaws is reduced power – a major issue for those wishing to do more than garden pruning and a long-standing justification for the avoidance of battery powered tools. This may not be the case for much longer, however – it is the belief of Rebecca Rassie, marketing and communications manager for Stihl, that

“Power is not always the leading factor when choosing a machine.” Rebecca added that Stihl’s offering already includes a number of battery machines with petrol level performance. Paul Fry, vice president of cordless product management at Milwaukee Electric Tools, is also confident in the future of battery powered kit: “Tools are getting smaller and lighter, and at the same time outperforming their predecessors. Lithium-ion will continue to drive the development of innovative products that redefine end user productivity, and will continue to raise industry standards for cordless performance and reliability.” As the power tool industry is thought to be valued at over R420 bn, it’s only a matter of time until battery power is able to eclipse its rivals. With such significant benefits, as gaps in performance are closed and battery life increases even more, it’s clear why battery powered kit would be a preferred choice for an industry primarily concerned with the environment – as well as getting the best out of its kit. www.prolandscaper.co.za
