HUSQVARNA DOES IT AGAIN WITH 150 TREES PLANTED AT WILD COAST MUSIC FESTIVAL The successful staging of the second Mdumbi Green Fair Music Festival at Mdumbi Point was recently held along the Wild Coast. A popular and unique fundraiser for TransCape NPO, which is deeply involved in development work in the area, and with the surrounding Xhosa communities, the festival not only draws much needed tourists to the region and thus provides income opportunities for the local population, but it is also used as an opportunity to educate the community about the importance of reforesting the area. With that in mind, Husqvarna, sponsored 150 indigenous trees to the event that were planted over the weekend. Not only that, this sponsorship also helped pay to fence off the newly planted area and for the employment of community members to dig the holes and help with the planting.
Co-organiser and one of the sponsors, Wayne Barton of Tata Waste, said: “Mdumbi was nominated by Getaway magazine as the most beautiful beach in our country, but the vegetation around it has been eroded over the years. With people constantly having to source firewood for cooking, along with goats, sheep and cattle eating new seedling trees, there has been little hope for a sustainable forest eco-system. Today there are very few trees left for tourists to sit under in the hot summer months. We need to re-establish the forest, and thanks to Husqvarna’s valuable donation, we can dramatically enhance the area as a tourist attraction.”
wonderful concept. TransCape NPO, Mdumbi Backpackers and the Mankosi community arrange this event annually to raise funds for the NPO, which not only tackles developmental challenges by the communities in the area but also provides a great opportunity to reforest the area through festival goers and the community planting indigenous trees. Not only did Husqvarna’s donation help create awareness of the important role forests play in our planet’s ecology, but it also allowed at least half of the 500 or so festival-goers to offset the carbon footprint of their travels to the event!” visit www.husqvarna.co.za

A month ago, Elgin Rust, Terraforce’s in-house media producer, travelled to Dubai to visit Consent, Terraforce’s licensee in the United Arab Emirates. Rust also joined Sinan Awad, Alaamal Construction CO LLC, Terraforce block installer in the region, for a day of rather inspiring site visits. Here Terraforce employee’s had the chance to witness the miracle of Dubai, a city which strives to turn a desert city into a green oasis, with the help of sustainable, and in the case of Terraforce blocks, plantable landscaping products. First stop was the aptly named Silicon Oasis. Here the Terraforce L16 block was used in a residential complex to create a recreational outdoor area for residents. The green boundary wall flanks the outdoor pool, children’s play park
Another very impressive site visited was the Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital, an initiative of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. Here the L16 blocks were installed by Awad and his team in June 2014 to create a green sound barrier as the hospital is located next to one of the main highways. Careful selection of the plants along with a drip irrigation system (on a timer) has allowed the green wall to flourish, creating a sanctuary for the patients being treated at the hospital. Q: “WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BIM, WOULD YOU CONSIDER THIS TO BE THE FUTURE OF DESIGN?”
generate 2D or 3D files that can be milled or machined into construction elements. I think the average practices will continue to use it for a long time to come.
DR C A Ida Breed (Pr Larch) Senior Lecturer, Department of Architecture at University of Pretoria and ILASA president. I do not foresee that everyone will jump into BIM programmes as we did with AutoCAD. There is no doubt that in an interdisciplinary working environment commonalities are welcomed. For that reason some landscape practices have settled for Revit, since it is the software of choice for technicians in Architectural firms and other professionals in the industry. While there is no doubt that technologically powerful tools can be handy, they remain tools and in no way a measure of better quality design which should be our greater concern. That a practice is better because it uses BIM is the same as saying that a pianist is better because she plays on a Steinway. The argument that BIM offers better quality, more accurate drawings for better estimation is misleading. One may ask: better quality than what? Or, more accuracy than what? Quality is a consequence of our inputs. Some other misconceptions play a role, or at least a marketing role: the fear of being “left behind”, of “becoming obsolete”, which is simply not true. For example, hand drawings are not a thing of the past, underrated invariably by those who cannot draw; they are and will be the primordial design tool of any designer. They are quick, expressive and effective enough to communicate our intentions. AutoCAD is also far from obsolete, it is an extremely precise tool that still works well for the task at hand and more importantly can www.prolandscaper.co.za
Leading designer Patrick Watson relies in building strong relations with clients and contractors to produce some of the best landscapes in South Africa. Needless to say he does not need BIM, software or even hand drawings to achieve this. At the end of the day, the working environment and size of projects in which you work will decide whether your practice needs a BIM solution or not. The one thing I am sure though is that to be a better designer, one that adds quality and save resources by taking the right design decisions, is a far more complex and committing endeavour than selecting the right software package. This is, at any rate, the crucial issue.
What is important to note is that BIM is an innovative approach to a way of working. The industry currently offers us an unprecedented number of software options as well as an extraordinary amount of data. Take, as an example ‘point clouds’ obtained through 3D scanning technology, these can offer far more than a traditional survey, such as existing vegetation and trees’ height, breadth, even overall canopy radius. However, this vast amount of data is often raw, overwhelming, and in its essence inaccessible to the average user. The key is in turning this data into information. This information needs to be easily available and readily useable. How do we do this? We strive for a strategy of never-ending-improvement, we take the time, now, to establish BIM libraries, source files, well associated information, protocols and adaptable workflows. If we take the time to set up such structures with future projects in mind, we will compact data into meaningful information that will optimistically translate into knowledge within a company collective. BIM is the future of design. The first steps towards this “big picture” future need to be taken now. The tasks that any professional in the industry needs to fulfil is to spend the extra effort on smart information modelling before a project’s inception, to benefit from the time savings later, when it’s crunch time.
Astrid van der Laan, BIM Co-ordinator Boogertman + Partners Architects at University of Pretoria and ILASA president. We find ourselves in a paradigm shift when considering the development of projects within the built environment. Whether it be architectural, landscape or urban design, such designs need to be realised quickly and iteratively, drawings produced rapidly, and project costs kept to a minimum. There is no doubt that BIM as a process will help us realise these goals, but not without effort on our part. Pro Landscaper Africa / July 2017

Seamless Flooring Systems began with the very successful Quartz Carpet brand. I then became aware of the many playground injuries happening on a daily basis in our playgrounds. I then researched the sports and playground industry and noticed that not enough was being done to protect our children in our playgrounds. South Africa has stringent laws governing critical www.prolandscaper.co.za
Quartz Carpet fall height from equipment. The law states that, if the play apparatus is 600mm off the ground from the lowest point a child can fall from, then the ground must have a soft fall area to protect the child. The thickness of the rubber required to place in this area is governed by the critical fall height. These are the same laws that are in most countries around the world. Legal cases where a child has been injured, maimed, paralyzed or even died from inadequate floor protection being in place are huge and can amount to a jail term, massive penalties and shutting down of the facility. I also saw the growing need for practical outdoor solutions for the play industry, particularly in public spaces and public promenades and playgrounds, that are now showing themselves to be paramount for creating community interactivity, and from here the Playsafe and EcoRubba brands materialised. EcoRubba is a budget friendly wet pour recycled safety rubber floor that was developed alongside the Playsafe brand. The EcoRubba is either used as the wear layer or as the cushion layer beneath the bright and colourful Playsafe EPDM range. Playsafe is available in 24 bright colours and is UV stable and soft and bouncy. Logos, figurines, hopscotch layouts, and shapes can be installed in different colours and to create various themes. Clicksport interlocking multi-purpose sports flooring is a quick and easy low cost sports floor solution that is laid and can be removed with ultimate ease. What makes it suitable for the SA market is the ease with which it can be installed over solid surfaces as well as the security feature that makes it anti-theft. Not many rock pools have a 4meter drop off from a natural granite outcrop into a 3-meter-deep natural swimming pool. Which is an indication of the complexity experienced with the installation. The result is a well installed public park area that carries heavy foot traffic as the area is open to the public as well as being used for functions and events. The detail in the construction and installation of both the

The perfect alignment of aspects from park benches to bicycle racks shows that through the construction a high degree of attention to detail was maintained. The music synchronised water feature is a highlight of this site and is well worth a visit.
THE LAWNMOWER CLINIC TROPHY FOR THE BEST LANDSCAPE & TURF MAINTENANCE Servest Landscaping and Turf for Meyersdal Eco Estate This year, for the first time, the Water Wise category become an automatic entry for all SALI contractors excluding those who entered the Specialised landscape construction category. The results have been fantastic which makes this entry a truly deserved winner of the Trophy. A site which used no irrigation to transform a previously manicured garden into a natural garden. The contractor achieved this by using endemic plant material as well as relocating plants from the estate that would have otherwise been lost to construction.

With variable topsoil levels and the range surrounded by natural bush it added to the complexity of the construction. The end result is an innovative construction that dealt well with the challenges to retain and level the tee box. The earthworks that utilized and enhanced the natural slope to aid the drainage of the turf area is to be commended as no sub surface drainage was incorporated on the site other than the tee box.
In this garden, the contractor has managed to effortlessly achieve the brief of the client to “rehabilitate the surrounding veld into the garden”. In an area of the Little Karoo that is renowned for its poor soil and huge variations in climatic conditions these obstacles have been overcome by the correct use of plants and their suitability for the site. The speed in which the plants have grown can only attest to the high degree of soil preparation done prior to planting. Street furniture is often seen as a necessity instead of a chance to landscape the urban environment into an interesting, interactive space. What we usually end up with is mass produced, uniform quality seating, when this space could instead give designers the opportunity to create interactive, unique spaces. With imagination and investment, seating can be turned into interesting features and become a part of the landscape, instead of something that merely exists to perform a prescribed function. The process of designing public seating starts by thinking about the context. The design considerations can be summarised in 5 main headings:
a customer flies off to Timbuktu? You need to establish what the purpose of the seating is. Who will be using it? Robust students, busy adults, distracted commuters or tired mums with prams? At Hamilton Hall we designed seating that would permit student activities, allowing them to casually socialise and charge their cell phones during break. 3. Location: Whether you have indoor or outdoor seating, shade or sun. 4. Function: What will the purpose of the seating you are creating be? Will it be seating for a quiet corner or busy interchange or maybe a focal point reserved for artistic expression?
1. Aesthetics: • To procure a public realm that is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing.
At Hamilton Hall we were presented with an outdoor area with existing trees that formed a linear element, restricting the movement of • To create a small oasis in the desert of cement students to some extent. depend on the user. A serviceable product is something to consider and is required for public safety. Broken furniture provides too many injury risks.
For the Hamilton Hall setting, we selected concrete seating with Balau hardwood insets to allow for a hard-wearing product. Galvanised steel posts set in concrete footing would provide the perfect finish. 5. Illumination: The immediate surroundings needs to be comfortably lit. Typically, public lighting is place right next to a public bench with the user wondering if an UFO is reading to land straight above. The lighting at Hamilton hall illustrates how public lighting can be subtle with strip lighting fixed out of sight under the seat. The paved area immediately around the seating is illuminated efficiently with a soft glow. Inspirational Case Study: Chicago Riverwalk Project by Ross Barney Architects. Public seating has been successfully integrated into the hard landscaping. Defining the functional zones makes it possible for urban dwellers to feel relaxed in a very busy, mixed use urban context. The seating is comfortable, stylish and integrated with the back rest doubling up as a bar counter. The materials used are hard wearing and attention to detail has created a safe and comfortable urban environment. Shade trees are included within the terraced seating elements, creating a comfortable dappled shaded seating arrangement.

IT IS ALL IN THE DESIGN Tanya de Villiers & Herman de Lange on what it involves designing great outdoor furniture.
T
he character of any public space is enriched by the inclusion of dynamic and functional/useable elements loosely called “street furniture”.
Street furniture is a collective term that refers specifically to objects and pieces that are installed in public spaces, streetscapes, etc. for a variety of usually useful purposes. ‘Well-designed and bespoke functional elements can make spaces unique and make them memorable’ says Tanya de Villiers of well-known award-winning Cape Town firm cndv landscape architects. Street furniture can help in space making, not only as physical objects, but also to provide the user with objects that add value to and heighten the experience of a user. Landscape Architects are often also called upon to compile Aesthetic Guidelines for developments or for cities, with the aim of guiding or prescribing the style of various elements within a space (public of private) to ensure a coherent theme or ethos is applied within these spaces during development or upgrades to these space.

All in all, street furniture plays a vital role in society, not to be forgotten about.

QUALITY REQUIRES A HOLISTIC APPROACH - ALL ASPECTS OF YO U R WO R K N E E D TO R E F L E C T T H I S AT T I T U D E .
When did you realise you wanted to be involved in the landscaping trade industry? I was a very late bloomer, only knowing that I wanted to do something meaningful and contribute significantly to society. I was not academically inclined- my school years were mostly shaped and inspired by environmental protests in Germany at the time. Being a part of the Green movement of the 80’s sparked my passion for these environmental themes and values. The Green industry therefore seemed to be the answer for me. In my early twenties- my passion for both the natural and built environment paralleled with my desire to creating things somehow naturally led me to the landscape arena. I studied Horticulture at University for 2 years but my desire to build and create motivated my move into a two year apprenticeship in Landscaping. This allowed me to understand the balance of just how laborious our trade can be, yet at the same time wonderfully versatile, often requiring a wide variety of skill and adaptability. Thereafter I studied landscaping design, landscape construction and nature conservation whilst installing quite a number of gardens in Germany along the way. You are of course not a South African native. How has it been adapting to the South African climate & environment and how has it affected your process and design aesthetic? I had to start anew in terms of language, culture, climate and plant knowledge. I was very fortunate in starting with practical training at Kirstenbosch. I was used to working with small spaces where every detail mattered. My passion for the hard landscape elements of a landscape intervention originated from the German approach. The approach was more utilitarian where small spaces

still needed to satisfy the needs of a family as an outdoor space. Here, in South Africa, we have more space to create something more aesthetic through beautifully planted spaces. I quickly learnt to merge this South African vibrancy with fine attention to detail which results in truly exceptional gardens. Interpreting the needs of clients was a big challenge. I sometimes learned it the hard way. If a Captonian told me, “I like what you have done”, my excitement was often short lived with, “Can you please change it and break it down”, the very next morning. I was flabbergasted. Now I know a client has to say at least three times ‘I love it’ before I can be 50% certain that a proposal will be accepted. South Africans are very indirect in this regard. Living in a country with so many vibrant cultures is so much more interesting! You work with some accredited and wellknown designers. Who are some of the garden designers and landscape architects you work closely with? Tirzah Webb, Franchesca Watson, Carrie Latimer, Mary Maurel, Kobus Meiring and Penny Petersen. These people have been fantastic to work with and have played a massively instrumental role in my own personal growth and the growth of the Heimo Schulzer brand. They have always valued my design input and never made me feel as though I am simply just a contractor. At the end of the day the best results are achieved in a close relationship between the planner and the doerone cannot do without the other one. How long have you been in operation in South Africa? 18 years

How many staff do you employ on your premises? 70. What are your ideals as a company? We are centred and focused on delivering a quality service of the highest standard. I believe that accountability and pride in what you do is key for achieving this. Quality requires a holistic approach- all aspects of your work need to reflect this attitude. It is all a team effort and I am incredibly proud of the people I have worked with. Some started out together with me from humble beginnings- it is a pleasure to see people grow and succeed. You have recently joined SALI, and won a Trophy for Best New Comer at the 2017 awards… how has it been becoming involved with this association and how does it feel to win this award? Entering the first time and winning something is quite mind blowing- I feel we have done very well and I am proud of this achievement. Associating with SALI is an important step for us as an industry role player. As an introverted person, this article is probably the most exposing thing I have ever done. We feel our association allows us to join and network with other industry leaders and put
ourselves out there proudly, it is important to participate in associations through which you can improve your calibre of work and professionalism. As a designer & a contractor which sector do you do majority of your work in, and which sector is your favourite? 95% of our work is residential- this is and remains my personal preference. I love to get to know the client and create a space best suited for them and their family. More time can be spent on giving exactly what it is the client needs. I enjoy completing a project in a couple of months and then starting the next project with new energy, equipped with the experience of the last one to make the next even better. It feels like having another chance again. The bigger the project, the less attention to detail can be dedicated to each aspect of the design. What are some tips and pointers you have for youngsters within the trade wanting to start up their own practices? Managing the expectations of your client is essential. Information flow and clear communication is critical for effective project management. Attention to detail enables people to realize that you have taken the time, listened to what it is they want, and are trustworthy.
What is one piece of equipment you cannot live without? Used to be the spirit level – now it’s the cell phone! What are your company’s goals for the next 5 years and where would you like to see the profession progressing to? Growing the company is always the most important goal. Making myself redundant but not sacrificing the standards that have been established over the years. Focus on training and development within the company and developing a system of mentorship. Growing our maintenance division is important moving forward. Every month we aim for an improvement somewhere in the process; however small- It’s all in the details! Who has been your biggest professional influence thus far? Still I would say, the 10 years working and studying in Germany and at Kirstenbosch. When you aren’t creating gorgeous gardens what are some of your other hobbies? Spending time with my son Tarek (12) and my daughter Mirjana (9), family Safari camping trips, running, mountain biking, spending time in my workshop and philosophy.

he landscaping for the new building is a seamless mix of form and function. Keeping in mind that this is not only a head office, but it is also a distribution and manufacturing facility that operates 24/7. Whilst much of the indigenous landscape has been kept simple and unobtrusive to avoid any hindrance of the logistical portion of the building, there are numerous stand out features that deliver the required impact befitting of this high-end facility and the image that the client wishes to portray to its visitors when they arrive at the office. On the South – Eastern corner of the site, Countryline Africa constructed a custom-built gabion feature wall that spans up to 5m high at its apex. This feature was constructed using specially ordered weldmesh wire sheets, hand fabricated and packed with selected local stone harvested from the waterfall city precinct. This structure was installed to “clad” the vertical concrete retaining wall that makes up the Southern end of the platform and acts as a feature signage wall, not only for Amrod but for the entrance to the commercial district.

Accompanying the feature gabion walls are a number of bespoke stainless-steel gabion features that sit within the water features at the main entrance to the office portion of the development. These gabions are packed with the same local stone but required to be constructed in stainless steel as they sit within the water features and form the sculptural feature to the entrance of the building. Nothing was spared when it came to the detail and the materials used throughout the landscape are only of the best quality and finish. Custom timber seating benches, planters, furniture and even the safety balustrade at the top of the platform retaining wall were all specialorder items and installed to suit the exacting quality of the client. Mass planting around the building peripherals and within the parking areas soften the overall project, whilst the more than 300 trees planted throughout the site will not only add scale to the immense building but also provide much needed greenery and shade within the precinct. The feature planting at the entrance to the site and the office spaces offset the modern industrial fabric of the building and the pockets of soft greenery break up the hardscaping inviting people to enjoy the outdoor spaces created throughout.
An area earmarked for future expansion has been made into a temporary parkland functioning as a usable outdoor office and is a well utilized passive area for the employees and visitors to break away from the hustle and bustle. Along the eastern boundary of the site, sitting below the massive CRB platform wall is a bio-swale area constructed to not only accept and attenuate the onsite storm water, but also acts as the final calming stage for an environmental passage that runs the entire length of the commercial node fed from the natural wetlands on the western edge of the Waterfall City development. This bio-swale formed a major portion of the landscaping works as it not only entailed a large amount of earthworks and shaping but it had to be constructed to conform to the engineering, environmental and aesthetic designs of the precinct. Form meets function once again and the results of this team effort are not only functional and environmentally correct but an eye catching green lung that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. The overall design completed by Wouter Labuschagne of GreenInc Landscape architects fits the brief perfectly and the quality of the products and installation combined to deliver an outstanding landscape for an outstanding building.

Client brief: The client wanted an indigenous functional landscape that would work within the parameters of the site and the activities that take place within the building. The landscape needed to be functional providing outdoor passive areas and selected features for the main focal points and entrances of the building. Sourcing of materials: Due to the nature of the design and the plant palette utilized, most of the plant material was readily available through our network of suppliers and / or the plant stock grown in our own nursery facility. The custom and feature items and materials required a large amount of effort from our inhouse sourcing team to ensure that only the best quality products were sourced. Numerous trips in and around the greater Johannesburg are were completed to collect samples, view materials and source the correct products for the job.

This garden located in Robertson, Western Cape, is a fantastic showcase of conscious ecological work that carries a strong water-wise and sustainability message.

The Brief: The brief from the client was to incorporate the surrounding veld into the garden, to protect and rehabilitate the remaining pockets of disturbed veld with the garden boundaries and create a landsccape with a strong aesthetic appeal.
BEFORE & AFTER
The Garden in Context: This 1-hectare project in Robertson involved blending the landscape into the natural environment that surrounded the private residence, utilising species naturally found within the endemic renosterveld. Large groupings of indigenous grasses (including Eragrostis and Melinis species) were planted to create a seamless transition between the natural setting and man-made structures. (For example, the softness of mass planted low grasses around the main house complement the lines of the structure, while the varied and detailed planting along some of the walkways create a different type of visual interest). The grasses also form the biome for the veld to further seed and reinstate the original natural renosterveld over time. Additionaly, local stone and compacted earth was laid for permeable walkways flowing through the landscape. According to the SALI judging panel, DDS Projects managed to effortlessly achieve the brief of the client, which was to rehabilitate the surrounding veld into the garden. In an area of the Little Karoo that is renowned for its poor soil and huge variations in climatic conditions these obstacles have been overcome by the correct use of plants and their suitability for the site. The speed at which the plants have grown can only attest to the high degree of soil preparation done prior to the planting. The contractor had to contend with game grazing newly planted grass plugs as well as finding out that the planting of certain grass species before the winter months was not successful. It is only through lessons like this that are learnt and corrected a contractor can learn and implement corrective changes to enhabce the sustainability of the garden design. Sourcing material & Special Requirements: Plants were sourced from various nurseries, mostly smaller specialist nurseries that focus on growing indigenous plant species. To complement the planting and increase the diversity of planting, seed was provided by a small, independent

producer that specialises in endemic vegetation and veld rehabilitation. Materials such as compost were sourced as locally as possible. Other than poor soil conditions, one of the trickiest items was that some of the grasses didn’t grow well because they were planted at the beginning of winter or were grazed by game, but these were replaced at the beginning of the following summer and have grown very well since. be recognised for ecologically friendly work that also carries a strong indigenous and water-wise component. The SALI Awards are considered to be the pinnacle in our industry and we are delighted to have our work acknowledged by an industry body. In view of the current water restrictions and the potential of this becoming an ongoing issue, I reckon that this creates an ideal opportunity for landscapers to embrace a change of thought on water usage. We need to consider the long-term water needs of the landscapes that we create,” says Danie.

We’re already looking forward to next year.
Our first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show was a great success, with lots of positive feedback and several floral exhibitors completely selling out of flowers and plants. The high winds and torrential rain earlier in the week caused some initial problems, including serious traffic delays for which we apologise, but once these were resolved everyone seemed delighted with the show and its spectacular setting. his beautiful country park garden was an existing garden that needed an enormous revamp and clean up with large aliens and exotics removed. The garden was in need of a total re-shape which was certainly achieved with the fervent use of an excavator and digger loader. The large tree stumps were required to be removed as well and the garden shaped and sloped. It was a mammoth task, but Alan Dawson and his team were up for the challenge. Alan’s team had a period of 4 months to complete the job. It was difficult at times as the house was undergoing extensive renovations and the team had to work around the building contractors throughout the process. The Brief The clients’ brief was to a create a park-like garden that would complement the aesthetic and charm of the house as well as the surrounding areas. The client also requested several garden rooms around the home for various purposes. The rooms include a shade garden at the cottage, this was created under an enormous existing blue gum tree. Various species of plectranthus together with camellias were utilised in this space.

The second room is the formal, partierred garden, which you need to walk through in order to get to the front door. This garden consists of neat, clipped hedges, ice berg standards on obelisks, and large groupings of perennials. Central to this garden is a magnificent rotating sculpture which the client has had for many years. The fire pit garden was created for entertainment and to take in the views of False Bay in the distance. This was formed by the construction company and fits beautifully into the garden with foliage all around it. The Koi pond and deck were created by using and upgrading the existing kidney shaped swimming pool. A Garapa deck was extended over the one end of the pool for viewing and relaxing, and it also serves as a hiding place for the Koi when the Herons arrive. Large stainless-steel gabions were installed into the pool in 3 places, accommodating the water lilies and reeds. The braai/entertainment area was upgraded for the client’s daughter to entertain friends. It is set under a large, and existing cedar and nestled into the shade planting. A magnificent Dylan Lewis Sculpture is situated in the garden under the Cedar to accompany this section of the garden. A Garapa timber seat was also built- in around the braai area.
The Jacuzzi garden, situated at the end of the new large rim swimming pool, is surrounded by grasses. The herb and vegetable garden outside the kitchen has been planted with a selection of culinary herbs and vegetables which are often used by the owners At the far end of the herb garden lawn, a large Lagerstroemia indica was craned in and planted. Top quality Kikuyu instant lawn was selected for this project and the paving in the partierre garden and driveway came together nicely to produce a fantastic result, as the contractor cleverly used the existing paving together with a new border in the partierre garden. To compliment the hard landscaping, bespoke bollards were made and placed on the road verge. These were designed specifically for this project. The client is extremely happy with the outcome and believes that he received so much more than he was expecting. A beautiful, peaceful, colourful and flowering garden has been created that is used and enjoyed by all its many visitors throughout the year.
The entrance courtyard is surrounded by a narrow planting of Liriope ‘evergreen giant’ and large trees that were craned in to screen the clients from their neighbours and break the scale of the double story house. Use it as a water feature, focal point of your garden, part of an entrance design to a business or home, or somewhere for children to play around safely at a restaurant or venue. This essential aesthetic has become a must have for all garden spaces.
GABIONS Stone Age Construction specialises in the design and construction of the many different forms of gabions. Stone Age works with conventional baskets and they manufacture their own from 3.2mm galvanized mesh or stainless steel. These baskets can be filled with 14 different types of stone, readily available from their yard. Stone Age’s biggest gabion project to date is the 3500m3 Steenberg Project in Tokai.

STREET ART: A CROSSING OF TANGIBLE TRUTHS BY ANGUS TAYLOR As an anti-monument, A crossing of intangible truths invites playful interaction as children splash through the water and climb on top of the figures, while also functioning as a focal point to the Platinum Square shopping centre. Five figures emerge from the water and carry large stones on their heads. The traditional “bronze bust” is subverted to function as the base, whereas the “stone plinth” is presented as the focus or celebrated element. Working with the concept of a water crossing, Taylor was tasked with establishing a core of ideas that would metaphorically be worth carrying from one side to the other; bridging the gap from one time, culture, understanding, school of thought and discipline to another. Commissioned by Blue Cloud Investments for Platinum Square in Rustenburg in 2012, it was created with the intention of timelessness, while also appealing to the public, representing the surroundings and communicating to a universal audience. Taylor’s combination of a variety of materials such as bronze, stainless steel, Belfast granite, red jasper and other natural stones is an ode to the rich geology that can be found in South Africa, while also referring to the platinum rich belt located in the Rustenburg area. The busts are portraits of the people he works with, as well as himself. They carry out the task of transporting the ideas to and fro. The ideas being carried are inarguable truths, things we know that truly are. In a contemporary society where everything is questioned and immense cognitive dissonance is the order of the day, this is more difficult than one might think.
ALLSORTED’S TREE GRATES Allsorted was privileged to work with the Landscape design team for the Matlosana Mall in South Africa. Allsorted tree grates were installed to protect the tree roots in the palazzo area and include cut outs for lights to shine through at night illuminating the palazzo. Allsorted tree grates are designed to be functional yet asethetic. There are two unique patterns available. The Square pattern has been used at Matlosana. The Eco pattern represents leaves in a more organic layout. Tree grates are generally manufactured from mild steel, which, is then powder coated to suit its surroundings. Custom designs can be manufactured. Caribbean Trough planters have also been placed in the area and a large, curved gabion rock bench has been positioned outside the entrance to the mall. www.allsorted.co.za
One figure refers to self-replication in the inanimate world (crystals), while another refers to life that grows from our geology, our strong planet and the importance thereof (to explain but a few). Ultimately the work is open to interpretation, one always hopes the audience or viewer develops their own meaning to the work so as to complete the very necessary interaction that public art should hopefully instil. www.angustaylor.co.za

THE ISABELO SMART BENCH The cast concrete Isabelo Smart Bench is set to breach the digital divide in African cities by providing a space enabled with free Wi-Fi. The Isabelo Smart Bench, recently launched in SA allows users to sit down, charge their phone in the provided USB points and connect to Wi-Fi for free – It’s also completely solar-powered (including night lighting). The product name isabelo™ gets its name from the Zulu word ‘to share’ and the smart bench is all about sharing: Sharing a seat. Sharing public spaces. And sharing content online. This product is the brainchild of Louise Meek, entrepreneur and founding director of the firm behind the project, Public Access Consulting. The bench is designed by Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin of Dokter and Misses and their vision is to have at least 10 isabelo™ smart benches in Joburg by the end of this year, with more benches being installed in other South African cities over the next 12 months. “Ultimately the form followed the function and we are happy with the result, which is a soft, humanistic design with flowing lines that can stand out in a densely populated urban setting in contrast to the cold, hard urban infrastructure,” adds Adriaan. www.isabelo.co 48 Pro Landscaper Africa / July 2017
