LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS JOURNAL

Landscape Architect’s Journal: Recognisable Residence Sitari Country Estate, Somerset West by cndv landscape architects

3D renders supplied by Xpose Studios. Sitari Country Estate is a 190 Hectare high density estate comprising 3500 residential units, a retirement complex, a school and retail centre. It is situated between the R102 and the N2 highway, on the outskirts of Somerset West. The Clients brief to cndv landscape architects was to make Sitari a recognisable place. The site, previously a lawn farm, had very little in the form of existing or natural landscape features to work with, so these needed to be created. It was a challenge to cndv landscape architects to portray the idea or feeling of a ‘’country’’ estate, whilst the project (built form) densities had to remain very high. cndv landscape architects decided to include bold focal elements that could be read from within as well from outside of Sitari (from the main access routes R102 and N2). These iconic 6

Pro Landscaper Africa | October 2018

place making elements have an agricultural flavour in the form of silos, windmills, dovecots and bird hides. cndv landscape architects were also responsible for all the external lighting and signage design as well as paving design for the estate, giving it a very distinctive look and feel throughout.

the N2 (housing the essential irrigation pumps and filters) and the windmill and tank in windmill park off the R 102 (used for circulating nonpotable water by means of wind energy).

In contrast to the neighbouring estate, Croydon’s large screening berm, Sitari is designed to be visible and proudly showcases itself to the exterior, with little or no berming to hide the estate. Feature elements, walkways, orchards, swales and ponds are positioned within the 50 m servitude line from the N2 highway. Bold 40-metre-wide corridors leading up the slope from the servitude area allow passers-by glimpses right into the heart of the development.

Open space proportions are large and total 71 Hectares. Wide non-motorised and road networks have been created at a grand scale. These wide boulevards are designed to screen or dwarf adjacent high rise or dense development, in order to give an illusion of space and to introduce a personal scale when moving via foot or vehicle through Sitari, notwithstanding densities. Instead of a single line of trees, main axes are lined with 8 rows of trees in a 40m wide servitude and open spaces are large even though they are situated between very dense clusters of housing.

Some of the parks and elements have already been installed, such as the large round ‘’silo’’ on

windbreak avenues and orchards, the emphasis is also on productive (useful or crop producing) rather than non-productive species. The climate on site is very harsh, with high wind speeds and some coastal (salt-laden) air, thereby reducing suitable species to only the toughest species, specifically reducing the choice of suitable trees. Already the idea of using citrus orchards have had to be replaced with more resilient species, due mainly to slightly saline soils on site. After thorough soil tests, vineyards and olive groves will be introduced, mainly in the wide electrical servitude. Although not on an agriculturally feasible scale, these may provide harvested olives and grapes to the existing facilities of Croydon’s olive press and wine cellar to add to their oils and wines. Other orchards of figs, pomegranates, apples, almonds and some communal vegetable and herb gardens will be used by the club house kitchens and by residents of the estate. A key feature of the retirement estate will be communal vegetable gardens and a central open space network. Parks will feature vine-covered pergolas, a boulle court, with specially designed play structures for children to enjoy as well as picnic spaces, benches and space to play sport. cndv landscape architects designed Sitari from the start to be independent of potable water sources for landscaping purposes. Irrigation water is exclusively from non-potable sources, mostly sourced on site from winter rains, via naturally vegetated swales, and supplemented by an allocation from the Moddergatspruit, in a 150 000 m3 storage dam. This forethought has meant that Sitari was able to effectively survive the drought conditions of the last year. The reinstatement of the second largest wetland or vlei in the Helderberg basin, Sitari’s large 22 Hectare Klein Zeekoevlei Wetland, will form a key focal feature of Sitari and become a natural habitat for endemic plants, birds and amphibians. The Klein Zeekoevlei is one of only two such recreated wetlands within the City of Cape Town, the other being Somerset West’s Paardevlei. Both of these can be seen on maps dating back to the 1700s.

The Wetland at Sitari www.prolandscaper.co.za

The wetland construction will commence in 2019 and will include walkways, bird hides and boardwalks linking up to Sitari’s Clubhouse and informal picnic area, all situated centrally in the development.

CapeTown’s Dome of Plants LOLA Landscape Architects in cooperation with: Nomadic Resorts, Hydroponics Nederland & Leon Kluge

LOLA designed a Dome of Plants in Cape Town, South Africa. The dome is a temporary structure meant to become a hotspot in a now largely stagnant and grey part of town. Dealing with the water crisis, the plants in the some are to be watered with purified urine. The Dome of Plants was presented in Cape Town during Design Indaba 2018 in front of 4500 attendees.

plants. Underneath this vegetated shelter there is 175 m2 of indoor space and 175 m2 of stage and podium. Together they offer space for discussions, events, workshops, exhibitions, meetings, lunch and a quick coffee outside the big institutions, accessible for everyone. It is an attractive third place and can become a hotspot in the cultural life of Cape Town.

Centrally positioned on Luthuli Plaza in Cape Town, a green dome of 20m width and 15m height will offer an inviting garden-like space for urban encounters. The dome is an open shell covered with plants, forming a sphere-shaped botanical garden, hosting Cape Town’s most exquisite local vegetation as well as air purifying

The dome will be constructed of mainly biological materials (bamboo, wood and plants) and fed by purified waste water, with a minimal ecological footprint. The position in the city, its bold and lush appearance and the innovative construction and application of technology will make sure it will become a sustainable

icon for the city. All over the world architects and enthusiasts are building domes, from tiny houses to airport-sized biodomes. It appeals to the need for protection in its simplest form: a shell that divides the outside world from a protected interior one; a communal bubble. Usually domes have one disadvantage: they exclude the exterior much more than any other form of architecture. Cape Town’s moderate climate allows creating a half-open membrane rather than a closed surface, creating a more open and inviting structure, appearing as a half transparent hanging garden. At night it will cast a mysterious green glow on Luthuli plaza.

Pro Landscaper will be hosting a trade event titled FutureScape Africa in the coming month. The intention of this event is to explore and discuss the future of our landscaping industry.

FACE S OF TH E FUT U RE

The future of any industry is largely positioned from the perspective of the youth and the paths available to youngsters to become active and contributing members within their industry. Based on Youth Day earlier this year and because our trade event’s theme highlights the future - we tasked ourselves with the mission of finding some of South Africa’s most inspiring young professionals making waves within the industry and championing their chosen fields. The truth is, we didn’t need to look very far. Some of these candidates have started their own firms, some are involved in numerous associations and organisations, some are entrepreneurs, some have come from abroad to explore our wonderful landscape and some have worked their way cautiously through the ranks… all of these candidates however, are wonderful examples of a youth movement that gives us massive confidence in the future of the green industry. It has been a fantastic campaign that has proven one thing, that our youth are pioneering new methods of thinking, are looking at our rich cultural heritage with vigour and are keen problem solvers. We have had dozens of entries for this campaign and have seen some inspired projects, opinions and design, all presented to us. We would like to applaud every member who entered and we encourage this to be a growing and inspiring campaign to be a part of moving forward. We form part of a culturally diverse and unique nation that is full of potential and brimming with opportunity. – These are our 2018 Faces of the Future

FACES OF THE FUTURE

"I have been an active member of the ILASA Gauteng Committee. I am responsible for arranging events and assisting the ILASA national executive committee by attending conferences, seminars, school days and stakeholder meetings (where appropriate) within the Gauteng region. Because of this involvement, I remain up-to-date with developments in the profession and meet other landscape architects and professionals working within the green community and built environment. I have also had the opportunity to engage and interact with ambitious learners and inspire them to apply for further education, with emphasis on the field of landscape architecture, and the communitybased direction a learner could potentially delve into within the field. Furthermore, I have been involved in organising many events such as academic talks, award evenings and conferences. I was appointed to lead and organize two important and informative seminars on behalf of the Institute. It is vital for these events to take place and I hope by their continued occurrence, it will positively contribute to and strengthen, knowledge within the green industry."

RUTH MANDA 25

Ruth obtained a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture in 2015 from the University of Pretoria & currently is an Honours student in Landscape Architecture at the University of Pretoria. Ruth has great work experience, working with Interdesign Landscape Architects in Garsfontein, Pretoria (between 2016 – 2017). Ruth is someone who explains that being exposed to South Africa’s captivating and unique landscape- really magnified her interest in the natural environment. This inspired her to undertake her studies in Landscape Architecture (a degree which encapsulates her core interests – art, nature and design). Ruth has the right attitude towards work, doesn’t shy away from taking on more than her role entails & is described by previous employers as “an asset to any company that chooses to utilise her services” –

is living in inadequate settings. Although the constitution of South Africa states that "everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being,” many people (in rural and urban areas) are living in a less than sufficient environment, which has a negative impact on their physical, mental and psychological well-being. I believe the green industry has the potential to positively influence disadvantaged communities, especially as it concerns the natural environment – by finding more inclusive, inventive and sustainable ways of increasing people’s engagement to the benefits of nature. Professions such as Landscape Architecture are becoming increasingly concerned with environmental justice and play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues and inequalities through the thoughtful and sincere design and planning of the landscape and general built environment.

We like Ruth’s strong opinion on the industry & aspects she sees changing…

Community engagement and environmental education are also areas I think the green industry is taking promising strides in – resulting in projects that are holistic and that a community can take ownership and pride in.

Because of South Africa’s (and Africa’s) complex and tumultuous history, much of the population

Ruth is an active member of the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa (ILASA).

Ruth is a student member of the Water Institute of South Africa (WISA) Ruth is also a student member of WISA– it is necessary for individuals within the green community to be aware of the ever-developing issue of water and the many ways it can be used sustainably. Some brilliant projects Ruth has been closely linked to include: • Aramist Road: Medians (Complete) • FNB Contact Centre, Ferndale (Complete) • Mamelodi Magistrates Offices (Under construction) • Isando Property Development (Design Development) • Orion Building, Menlyn Maine (Under construction) • R24 Traffic Circles (Complete) • Menlyn Maine Precinct: Street Reserve Areas (Complete) • Telkom Park, Centurion: Street Reserve Area, (Design Development) • Wetland, Menlyn Maine (Under Construction)

CALLUM WATSON 27

Callum is a Candidate Landscape Architect at dhk architects Cape Town & has an Msc in Landscape Architecture from the University of Edinburgh. •

Callum has won the prestigious Andrew grant dissertation prize 2015

The Edinburgh university purchase prize 2015

The Landscape institute portfolio prize ‘highly commended’ 2016

and The landscape institute dissertation ‘highly commended’ 2016

Callum moved to South Africa over a year ago to discover what working in the South African context holds for landscape architecture. Callum explains that “At that time I was working in an office in Edinburgh after having recently graduated from the Master’s in Landscape Architecture degree from the Edinburgh College of Art. I had always had a deep connection with South Africa as my mother is South African and I wanted to practice in a context where I felt a connection to- but where I also felt that the work I did could make a real and positive impact on the lives of everyday people. As a landscape architect I see myself primarily as a problem solver, but what I have found typically is that landscape architects do not have a seat at the table in the type of design work that holds the power for real transformative change and that in the South African context, this work is given to architects and urban designers. The issue with this reality is that Landscape Architects are uniquely positioned to tackle the large-scale design challenges which this country faces at an ecological and infrastructural level but that the value landscape architecture brings is not easily quantifiable in typical terms for employers within the construction & development industry. Given the current issues and affects pertaining to climate change, poor transport infrastructure and inequality within South Africa I believe that landscape architecture has the potential to become a powerful vehicle for change, provided that we demand an equal status with more established professions whilst fostering collaborative cross disciplinary relationships and a greater understanding of the value that landscape architecture brings as a whole. www.prolandscaper.co.za

SINIKIWE JUJUJU 29

Sinikiwe “Juj” Jujuju is currently employed by cndv landscape architects in Cape Town as a Landscape Technologist. Sinikiwe qualified as a multidisciplinary in 2011 and an N5 level qualification in mechanical engineering both of which were acquired from the College of Cape Town. “My career started at Arcus Gibb Engineering and Science” Sinikiwe explains, “where I was employed as a multidisciplinary draughtsman gaining experience in Mechanical, Civil and Electrical departments respectively.” Having lived and grown up on a Golf Course I decided to enter the field of Landscape Architecture because of my interest in outdoor spaces and the positive role they play in improving the lives of people and the broader ecological function. Sinikiwe enjoys the opportunities landscape technologist's and landscape architects have in the built environment. He has also gained valuable experience in understanding small to large scale projects and the different challenges they come with. “Over the past 6 years of my employment at cndv I have worked under the mentorship of highly experienced professional landscape architects namely; Tanya de Villiers and Herman de Lange. Some of the prominent projects I’ve worked on at cndv as well as parts of my final Btech projects are Martinet Park pinehurst 3, Bastiaan Park pinehurst 3, Dube City Aero Playground, Precinct 1 Frame Work Plan, Greenville Phase 1, Tradezone Ii, Graanendal Phase 3, Pinehurst Centre, Helderberg Centre, The Sanctuary, Oranjezicht City Farm, Busamed Private Hospital, Takealot. Architectural solutions that could prevent this kind of disaster. Her dissertation – ‘Reconfiguring the Burnt Scar’not only tackled this global problem but also earned her Corobrik’s Most Innovative Final Year Landscape Architecture Award for 2017. The annual award – assessed by external examiners – is usually presented to a Landscape Architecture student with the most innovative dissertation. All graduating students in the UCT Master of Landscape Architecture programme are eligible for the award. Louise Brukman took this year’s top award, earning her the R6 000 prize. Pro Landscaper has published this winning dissertation in a previous edition and commends Louise on her ability to use real situations to problem solve and present very workable solutions for macro and micro applications. Louise Brukman is the winner of the 2017 Landscape Architecture student with the most innovative dissertation. Her dissertation – ‘Reconfiguring the Burnt Scar’- tackled this global problem following the devastating Knysna fires of June 2017. The fires almost destroyed the family home of Louise Brukman, a former Master’s student at the University of Cape Town. Her parents risked their lives to save the house and many people close to her were unable save to their homes. These events inspired her to explore Landscape

www.prolandscaper.co.za

While the dissertation focused on the Knysna region, the principle behind the concept can be applied to various regions globally, with slight adaptations made to vegetation types depending on the nature of the area. The concepts set out in her dissertation are readily capable of practical, economic and effective application. “I’ve always been interested in ‘water-wise’ and ‘fire-resistant’ design and I was researching this subject in June 2017 when the Knysna Fires occurred,” Louise explains. “I felt there were

opportunities within the realms of Landscape Architecture to assist in repairing what was damaged and preventing future catastrophes on such a massive scale. I researched integrated Landscape Architectural systems directed at the protection of both urban and rural areas from micro to macro areas,” she continued. “If a fire breaks out in a micro area, like a domestic garden, this system will form a protective mechanism, retarding and containing the spread of fire to proximate and surrounding areas.” Louise explains that the origin of the Knysna fire was within the vicinity of the Pine plantation – a vegetation type that is considered to be an ‘extreme fuel load’. Without sufficient and well-maintained infrastructure or regularly controlled ecological fires, the wildfire spread extremely rapidly to rural, urban and suburban areas including informal settlements. Brukman’s dissertation proposes, among other things, replacing portions of Pine plantations with other commercially-viable trees, which grow at a similar rate but have superior fire resistance characteristics. These areas would be further protected by the introduction of fire-resistant native and non-native vegetation, strategically placed fire breaks and stringent management systems. These systems can be replicated on a smaller scale for domestic gardens for which she has proposed a specific vegetation palette and planting arrangements.

YVO SUIJS 25

Yvo has been working at Hort Couture under the keen eye of Warren Lange (Landscape Architecture & Planning) for 2,5 years as a Landscape Designer & Candidate Landscape Technologist. Yvo has achieved his Bachelor of Science in Landscape design at the HAS University of Applied Sciences in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands- and is currently busy with his Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Yvo has an array of internships under his belt with work in both Netherlands and in the South African context. Yvo champions the notions of travelling to learn more about one's craft and encourages students and colleagues on this journey. His areas of expertise include: • • •

Concept design & visualization Masterplanning Urban design

Yvo is a Landscape Designer and Candidate Landscape Technologist who has the ability to develop concepts, sketch plans, masterplan and detailing, with some experience in environmental assessment, measuring works and project management. Yvo is creative, strong in design, exceptionally skilled in graphic communication and has gained much experience in the Netherlands with various projects on different scales. www.prolandscaper.co.za

If you are wondering Why Faces of the Future? Yvo explains, "during my internship at Hort Couture in Port Alfred, South Africa I have learned many new design skills and techniques through my supervisor Warren Lange. Only one year after that internship I got a message from Warren asking me to come back to work with him. I took on the challenge, finished my studies in The Netherlands and began working at Hort Couture in Port Alfred. While working at Hort Couture I’ve grown immensely, in terms of Landscape Architecture and personally. I’ve travelled around South Africa at every opportunity to gain experience and understand the country and its cultures. We received many internship students from abroad in the two years I’ve worked for Hort Couture. I’ve always enjoyed working with and mentoring other interns to grow in the field of Landscape Architecture. Slowly but surely, together with the internship students we’re establishing a portfolio of designs of the most critical and interesting areas in Port Alfred and creating a comprehensive urban design framework for future development for Port Alfred. Through this practice I’ve also started to enjoy learning others about the incredible things a landscape architect can do to improve the interface in and between communities and its natural environments. It’s not only in the office that I would work with interns, but I’ve also organised several road trips

for the interns to travel through South Africa. The road trips have best allowed me to experience the diversity of South Africa. Usually I would join the students on their road trips to show them the many different landscapes, faces and cultures in this wonderful country. I encourage students to do their internships in a country very different from their own, to open their eyes and show that there is so much more to see, do and learn, as it did to myself. I’ve done various garden designs for people that are close to me. What excites me is to show how endemic plants and local materials can make a space beautiful while functional, which is a thing that is overlooked sometimes. For me, context and story are of key importance in my process to develop inspirational, creative, motivating and challenging designs of which I can be proud of. Enthusiasm, positivity and belief are my main drivers to a successful process and interesting designs that matter. Two of my favourite and most inspiring projects I’ve worked on are the Amakhala Rhino Conservation Centre and a space for St. Andrews College called ‘Imbuba’. Design and conceptualizing is my passion, which I think can bring out the best in space and person, for now and the future, in me and hopefully in others as well. Always trying to find a way to make the impossible possible, searching for innovation and positive designs. Finally, seeing your own design being implemented is fascinating, whether it is standing out or blending in. " Pro Landscaper Africa | October 2018

Charldon Wilken holds Masters degrees in both Landscape architecture and Urban design from The University of Pretoria and The University of the Witwatersrand respectively. Charldon is passionate about systems thinking, respects the environment and has a good sense of design. He forms a vital part of the Fieldworks team in the integration of landscape and architectural projects across a variety of scales. Charldon is a committed, hardworking individual, with a passion for the art and science of landscape architecture and urban design. He can see things from many perspectives and to approach them in the required manner. Charldon is a prone self-starter, assuming the responsibility thereof. Charldon has contributed greatly to projects in various spheres, either as lead designer on all landscape components, or aided in the mitigation and integration of architectural components with their surrounding landscape. Significant contributions can be seen where the integration of systems is present, adding a dynamic component to design projects. Streetlight School: Streetlight School, Jepestown, Johannesburg showcases a design methodology of creative and adaptive re-use with novel construction methods in the attempt to create a feasible learning space within a post-industrial landscape. Due to budgetary restrictions (no budget at all) the innovative use of found materials, such as: pallets, standard hollow core doors, timber purlins etc, became necessary. As part of the relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces, the design of the courtyardplayground, is aimed at maintaining the identity of the interior spaces and material uses. Play towers were constructed as anchoring elements within the courtyard utilizing a simple system, consisting of standard timber materials that overlap to form tower structures that can be adapted to add slides, swings and climbing spaces. Adhering to safety requirements and making use of a

20

funding pool from companies willing to contribute time and funds as part of their yearly Mandela day initiatives, Fieldworks managed to obtain additional sponsored materials, such as Master fiber Matts etc. In addition, pallet planters were designed, that have zero waste, due to their innovative assembly methods, acting as both seating and planting. Both the architectural and landscape architectural components of the project, clearly addresses economic and environmental spheres of a sustainable urban project, however, it is only through the branding for streetlight school, as executed by Fieldworks’ graphic design department, that they were able to truly address the social sphere of their sustainable urban model. Branding their educational physical product really gave it identity. This allowed learners to get a branded school uniform, breaking divides in economic classes and fostering identity and unity. Keyes Art Mile Charldon has also been involved in designing the magnificent & rather pioneering veld wall project as published in Pro Landscaper’s most recent edition. It can be seen in all its glory at the Keyes Art Mile Development in Johannesburg. Charldon is to be commended for pushing the envelope when it comes to design. House Smuts: House Smuts is a good example of a well-integrated architectural and landscape architectural design process, as both of these disciplines impacted the design significantly from as early as the conceptual stages. Located in Clearwater Country Estate, Rietvalleirand, Pretoria, this residential project occupies a unique site, as it is situated on a plot overlooking a constructed wetland system. This provides the design team with opportunities to frame views and promote the natural landscape. A strong premise for systems design manifest within the design solution, as it is based primarily on the strategic use and recycling of water. A grey water recycling system, in the form of an on-site wetland, is responsible for water purification and reuse. The building is fully equipped with its own water storage facilities, which store grey and purified water separately. The system works with a combination of gravity and solar pumps, in order to minimise electricity usage. Indigenous low maintenance planting, allow the building to blend comfortably with its surrounds. Dissertations: Charldon’s dissertations have clearly influenced his views on the role that landscape/landscape

architects can play in the urban environment. His Master of Landscape Architecture Dissertation – Landscape Laboratory: Ritual and Edge as collective informants for public space in the South African urban environment. Explores the creation of conducive, healthy public environments, through uplifting and facilitating existing urban conditions. In his Master of Urban Design Dissertation – (Re)Mining Wastelands: A Landscape Approach to unlocking the latent potential of Johannesburg’s brownfield sites, Charldon explores the role that the landscape and natural systems can play in the revival and rehabilitation of mining brownfields and post-industrial sites bordering the Urban Development Zone of Johannesburg. Charldon views the landscape and the various layers thereof as much as an organising force that can be used as design driver as much as it is a distinct facet of the city. He is passionate about sustainable design and endeavours to bring about a positive influence and change. Charldon co-founded Fieldworks Forestation Cooperative, a movement to encourage individuals to plant trees. In 2016 recycled paper cups, planted with indigenous tree seedlings were gifted as an attempt to kick-start this movement. Charldon freely dedicates time to see students in a variety of fields to discuss their design projects and the intricacies thereof. Charldon has been invited by The University of Pretoria to act as external examiner, for which he has, since 2015, been external to 1st year Design; 3rd Year Plants Sciences; Honours Design, and Masters Design students. Charldon has also been employed as a studio assistant for the Honours Landscape Architecture students at TUKS. He is involved with The Washington University in StLouis Studio, held annually in Johannesburg, for which he has delivered lectures and acted as external examiner. He was invited by The University of Pretoria to act as Guest Speaker as part of a lecture series commemorating the 75th year of The Department of Architecture at TUKS, where he delivered a lecture with his business partner Albert Smuts on their approach to practice. Charldon is also a speaker at The University of Pretoria’s ‘Profession Sessions’ held annually as part of the EBIT faculty showcase at TUKS. Charldon co-authored an article for The AUA 2018 Journal, titled: Detail and Technology – The Fieldworks Approach.

FACES OF THE FUTURE

Managing Director – Head of the Architecture department at Fieldworks Design Group (Pty)Ltd. M.Arch (Prof). – Master of Architecture – University of Pretoria 2014. After completing his studies and having spent some years in practice and since spending a year achieving a culinary diploma, Albert cofounded Fieldworks Design Group in 2015, with the vision of creating a multi-disciplinary practice. Although the business is multifaceted- Albert’s field of expertise is: Architecture, specifically low-cost new build (Schools, residential, mixed use); existing urban framework upgrade; re-use/ reprogramming of existing structures. Fieldworks design group is a company dedicated not only to creating a brighter future, but is also an example of a firm with a uniquely progressive internal structure, combining different disciplines into one sphere to ensure that every project upholds at its core the three principles of sustainability we value above all: Environment, social, economic. These three spheres form the axiom of our approach, believing that through having a positive impact within all three sectors we enable the project to contribute to the built environment on a meaningful level. The firm was started in order to provide a creative thinktank for young South African designers to engage with a broader variety of challenges through working together and sharing knowledge across all design spectrums. they believe is a potent way of creating robust solutions within the built environment. Here are some of the many interesting developments Albert has been involved in. Streetlight Schools. Streetlight School is located on the upper ground floor of BJala Square. The school formally opened in January 2016 and provides education to many of the areas underprivileged youths. Born from necessity, the initial streetlight schools design methodology was one of creative re-use combined with novel construction methods in the attempt to create a feasible learning space within an existing industrial building. Constructing a learning space without any budget for material or labour necessitated using mostly found materials (Pallets, standard hollow core doors, timber purlins). Spatially, we worked with the physical constraints of the existing building as our guide and www.prolandscaper.co.za

attempted to accommodate for multiple activities within the limited intervention. Marshall Yards The Marshall Yards development focuses on creating a suitable urban intervention within the heart of Johannesburg. The buildings fully implement various urban design principles that are necessary for good form making within cities. It is of paramount importance to create social, recreational and retail spaces around these buildings, reviving the dilapidated urban fabric. Marshall Yards strives to become the archetype for what inner city housing can achieve. 32 Greene Street, mixed use, roof garden etc. 32 Greene street will become the first 8+ storey structure to be built in Johannesburg CBD in the last 40 years. The mixed-use building typology is focussed on providing quality affordable newbuilt housing within the Johannesburg CBD. The building provides high density housing, with ground-floor retail offerings as well as a communal rooftop space.

possible, and by doing so create a better future. Our approach to creating change within the industry is relatively simple: We fully commit to each and every project, beyond the expected scope, and form a proposal that we feel would be the best possible outcome. Whether it gets executed fully, partially, or not at all… we try to always do something worthwhile, even if it means that we have to shoulder a lot of the responsibilities and efforts without surety that it will happen. Initiatives to note Albert co-founded Fieldworks Forestation Cooperative, a movement to encourage individuals to plant trees. In 2016 recycled paper cups, planted with indigenous tree seedlings were gifted as an attempt to kickstart this movement. Albert has also been involved with The Washington University in StLouis Studio, held annually in Johannesburg, for which he has delivered lectures and acted as external examiner. Albert co-authored an article for The AUA 2018 Journal, titled: Detail and Technology – The Fieldworks Approach.

Dissertation: Deconstructing permanence – The emergence of a public space through reconfiguration of form. It is imperative to rethink the manner in which we look at cities, especially within the South African context. Historically, our urban environments have been a place of exclusion and segregation – structures were built with a single minded outlook and for a particular and exclusive demographic only. Inclusivity within our cities is dependent on re-imagining the existing infrastructure and spatial use in its entirety. Architectural design dedicated towards creating human-centric urban environments – spaces and buildings that can fully embody our three core principles (Environment, Economic, Social) need to be imposed on the currently rigid and ill-imagined cities. Albert’s view of the industry? Currently the built environment is in desperate need of young forward-thinking professionals able to think outside of the current norm. If we don’t challenge the norm of how cities are perceived, explore fresh ideas on how we can re-imagine the future, and set an example by practicing what we preach, who will? We believe in leading through example and hope to inspire the future designers of our country to take our ideas further than we ever thought

APHELELE CENGIMBO 26 POINT/SEA POINT PROMENADE UPGRADE”. I graduated my Landscape Technology degree with a cum-laude award. Most recently, I received a ‘Well done’ acknowledgement from the course convenor for achieving a top grade for my studio 2018 Project Titled ‘Memorial Landscape, Kechene, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’. The Project was completed after a 3 week tour the Ethiopian Orthodox and Monolithic churches, in Addis Ababa and surrounding cities.

Aphelele Cengimbo is a Candidate/Assistant Landscape Architect @ Terra+ Landscape Architects where he is responsible for site overviews, drafting of Landscape Plans, Technical Drawings and plans for submission and approval. Aphelele is also a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLARCH) 2nd year student at the University of Cape Town’s School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics. He has completed a Diploma and Bachelor of Technology in Landscape Technology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has also worked for two renowned companies in the Western Cape. His first work-Integrated learning experience was at DISA Irrigation and Servest Landscaping, where he was exposed to various horticultural and maintenance activities. He was also privileged to finish his last work-Integrated learning training at Room to Grow Exterior Designers, exposed and assisting in residential garden design and commercial landscape installation.

new to him. “I would say the influence of growing under a ‘construction-man’ dominated family drove my interest into the built industry. I also enjoyed farming with my mother (home gardening and small poultry project). When I found Landscape Architecture it seemed to be a perfect culmination. The knowledge and skills I have gained studying the Landscape Technology programme (at CPUT), enabled my skills and talent to grow and adapt in the Landscape Architecture programme (UCT’s Master’s Degree). In addition, the experience I have gained working with other students (undergraduates) as a tutor and mentor has helped me to come with my own design and life-style philosophy. I believe I have a lot to share with other developing students and to get recognition in the industry.” Aphelele outlines his commendable academic achievements thus far…

This is a young up-and-coming who sees the value in work integrated learning and is hungry to get involved in every aspect of the profession.

I have been grateful for several academic achievements, mostly during my undergraduate studies. I received full bursary by the Department of Public works (DPW), Construction Education, and Training Authority (CETA) in my 2nd year of undergraduate studies.

Aphelele explains that as a Xhosa young student from the Eastern Cape, the idea of Landscape Architecture and the profession was something

I have worked as a voluntary and as a payed tutor and mentor at CPUT, at the school of Horticulture and Landscape Technology. I help students from the extended curriculum programme with basic design ideas and drawing conversions. This experience made me believe ‘teaching is the most effective way of learning’. I enjoyed being a mentor not only because of the learning involved in the process, but because I was also a former extended programme student, with no design and horticultural background, that allowed for a healthy and effective relationship between the mentored students and myself. Becoming the face of the future will provide me a platform to motivate and aspire other young developing Candidate Landscape Architects, more especially, previously disadvantaged students and emerging professionals. Gaining recognition will also help me broaden my career choices within the evident ever-growing profession in practice and in academic field. I want to be an example to the young students from high schools around my village, whom I have introduced this profession to during summer holiday career exhibitions. Green Industry Involvement: Aphelele has joined few green initiatives; which include the Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) initiatives and Bridging Waters Conversation Series. His aptitude is certainly for helping other young students within university and students at high school level, who need guidance on future studies and career growth options. This year, on July 18, 2018 ‘Mandela Day’, Aphelele was part of team (Sponsored by South Point student accommodation/residence) that spent 100 minutes at a public school(s) to engage with learners from less fortunate communities on future studies and career growth options.

determine the manner in which a user experience can be created as a palimpsest of meaning between the tangible and intangible elements on site.

Heloïse is a Landscape Architect who is passionate about her work, especially brownfield regeneration projects. She excels at strategic thinking such as urban design schemes as well as detail-orientated designs. Heloïse completed her Master’s degree at the University of Pretoria with distinction last year. She also received the Bapela Cave Klapwijk’s most ecologically responsive award for this degree. She is registered with SACLAP as a professional. She has worked on landscape design projects ranging from large‐scale precincts, schoolgrounds, commercial and housing developments, corporate spaces and residential gardens. Furthermore, she has gained extensive Environmental Planning work experience.

This implies a dialogue between the polluted areas of industrial waste, the layers of historical significance and the remnants of nature. The user experience is proposed to consist of three realities: a lower (historical), in‐between (where bio-remediation takes place) and upper reality (elevated walkways and bridges) with increasing elements of transience. A new narrative is inscribed onto the site and provides multiple experiences with each visit to the site through a phased intervention that opens up areas and processes for experience as they become decontaminated. The essence of the design and its programme becomes mutualistic (as opposed to exploitative), based on the principles outlined by Klein (2014) namely, “interdependence, reciprocity and cooperation”.

The dissertation title of her Master’s is “Mutualism: the antidote to exploitation on a manufactured gas plant. It was featured in a previous issue of Pro Landscaper magazine. The main theme is natural restoration on the Johannesburg Gas Works site over a 20’ year period involving the community, aiding them to build new memories through an open narrative approach. The aim of this dissertation will be to

The goal of the design intervention is to foster a renewed community identity and social and environmental health through the range of active and passive activities proposed but also through the particular experiences that open up the site for renewed interpretation to all users. A mutualistic relationship between the site and the people can and should co‐exist. Some notable projects that she worked on

There were also numerous other projects worked on nationally as well as internationally. The aim of her design work is to express a unique resolution for each project. Extrapolation of abstract concepts into tangible design are often utilised as a means to form‐giving, usually considering the enduse of the design element fitting into its vernacular context. She has a notable plant knowledge as a result of her interest for various plant communities and micro‐climates. Some of her strongest skills include: thoroughness, strategic thinking and an intuitive response towards design. She feels that Climate changes brings complex but thrilling challenges, where systems far from equilibrium may bring spontaneous design interventions that works with nature. Fritjof Capra’s The Web of Life greatly influenced her work which describes the pattern of life as a network pattern with self‐organising ability. Patterns exist within patterns which resembles ‘a replica of the whole’. As a steward of the Environment, she aims to contribute to the production of sustainable design solutions benefiting the greater community. Aside from starting out her own company, she performs contract work for other landscape firms influencing her peers and also being influenced. Incredible value is locked up in group communities within the industry. One should always endeavour to improve one’s skillset which by means of individual‐ as well as social learning. Her projects have been widely published and she shows great promise as an industry icon moving forward. Pro Landscaper looks forward to seeing her company grow.

SIYASANGA YENZELA 25

Siyasanga is the assistant Production Manager at Samgro Wholesale Nursery and holds a Bachelor of Technology in Horticulture from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. His current career focus is on the production of plants. For Siyasanga the path has been straight and unwavering, with the past 8 years of his life being involved in horticulture, plants and learning the ins-and-outs of the industry. He has been fortunate enough to work amongst people with great knowledge of their craft. Siyasanga is 25 years old and considers himself still at an advantage of being able to learn as the industry is a specialised trade and he firmly believes that no matter how many years you have in the industry you are still bound to be introduced to a plant that you have not come across before. Siya explains that he started out his career working at a retail garden centre. “Soon thereafter I knew that I wanted to work with plants, which is why that drove me to want to pursue my studies on the subject. During my studies I worked at a botanical garden, rearing indigenous plants. This on its own drew me closer to the plants of southern Africa. I have worked in landscaping with the implementation and maintenance of plants and I just love it.” These past experiences have led him to where he is today, as he produces plants now and 26

he is able to understand better the purpose of what he is growing. “I can better think about what the end product will be, and I can create it accordingly. I am now currently running a new succulent production project that we have recently implemented with regards to the recent drought issue. The drought brought a crude awakening to the problem we have in South Africa regarding water shortage and it is our responsibility to adapt accordingly to the situation at hand. We can see how the public has become more conscious of this and moving towards more sustainable gardening by using water wise gardening and better utilization of natural resources.” Why is Siyasanga a Face of the Future? "I think I am a face of the future within the green industry as I have invested myself in understanding and learning the language of plants. I strongly believe that this industry has a lot more to offer me and I am excited at the discoveries that I am yet to make, under the guidance of the leaders and influencers around me the possibilities are endless. I wish to be one of these leaders and influencers one day!"

Society in 2017 which is an organisation that has helped him massively in terms of exposure into the industry. It has also helped broaden his knowledge into other regions. This year Siyasanga was selected to represent South Africa at the conference for the IPPS Australia region. As a youngster in the industry Siya explains that he always tries to expose those who are similarly still young in the industry to the IPPS society as many of the members are not young and there is a gap between them and the youth that can easily and willingly be filled. Knowledge needs continuation for the industry to succeed and this is something SIya champions. Siyasanga explains that “I volunteer with the HWPL organisation where individuals from different industries get together to provide their skills to uplift impoverished communities where we do community clean ups and setting up mobile clinics so that people can receive checkups. I also volunteer occasionally with an NPO by the name of TouchDown; similar to HWPL, TouchDown is geared towards community upliftment doing winter drives and community clean-ups and planting up plants to liven community parks, creating an environment where people can live better with in the community.”

Ridgeside is certainly one of Durban’s most integrated and exciting development nodes. It is a 140- hectare site with four-precinct development’s that will complete the Umhlanga Ridge. Here we look at the development of one of the last open sites on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in the Ridgeside precinct. It has afforded architecture and interior architecture company, Paragon, the unique opportunity to shape the landscaping as part of the overall design. Ochre Office Landscape Architects consulted on this site with soft scaping implemented by Burgess Landscapes.

There are three parking levels providing about 250 parking bays, as well as a ground-floor podium level with timber decks, walkways, landscaping, and water features. The total building area, including the parking levels, is about 18 600m². Paragon was commissioned by Shree Property Holdings to design the landscaping as part of the holistic design of the project. This meant using the building’s design language throughout the landscaping. “The client gave us the design freedom to sculpt the landscaping to complement the buildings’ angular and distinctive design,” Project Architect Jurie Geldenhuys comments. Calling on The Elements Six basic elements or materials had to be included throughout the design, namely fire, earth, water, metal, wood, and stone. Three separate external timber deck seating areas had to be provided in terms of the program: two areas for the two buildings, and one area for the public coffee shop at the pedestrian entrance to the buildings.

www.prolandscaper.co.za

A 4-star Green Star rating was the target from the offset, which the project received in May 2018. Over and above these specific client requirements, Paragon also had to adhere to the very specific requirements of the Ridgeside Management Association (RMA) concerning the treatment of corner sites in the precinct, as set out in the RMA Design Guidelines Volume 0 & 1. These guidelines relate to planting types, which had to be presented and approved by the RMA Design Review Committee. The guidelines also include: planting recommended for use on specific streets; 90% of all planting is to be indigenous, and the landscaping plans are to list and motivate plant types to be used for approval. A minimum of 20% of each site area is to be landscaped (the 20% is to be regarded as hard and soft landscaping areas); landscape designs are to take into account safety, surveillance, and defensibility of the public environment; in addition, corner sites have very specific requirements in terms of planting height and species, so as not to obscure or obstruct views. Another focus of the guidelines is the external horizontal surface treatment throughout the Ridgeside precinct, and the interface of the public surfaces with the surfaces used in the various properties.

PORTFOLIO

In this regard, professional landscaping design firm Ochre Office of Johannesburg assisted Paragon in selecting and specifying plant types that would meet the requirements of both the RMA and Green Star throughout the design. Ochre Office also assisted in terms of the documentation of the paving layouts, timber decks, timber seating, and the water features. The site, situated on the corner of Umhlanga Rocks Drive and Ntusi Road, slopes away steeply from Umhlanga Rocks Drive towards the east, down Ntusi Road. The steep slope, combined with a maximum building-height restriction on the site, posed a major challenge in terms of maximizing the building height/office area, while also finding a median level to maximize pedestrian accessibility from the Umhlanga Rocks drive side, and vehicle access from Nokwe Avenue on the opposite side of the site. There is a level difference of more than 1 m between Umhlanga Rocks Drive (the western side) down to the ground-floor podium level, while down Ntusi Road (the northern side), most of the first-level basement would have been exposed was it not for the cascading planters next to the stairs, which provide access from more than 1.5 m below the podium level. The edge conditions of the landscaping on the site boundaries were designed to, where possible, join seamlessly with the adjacent RMA landscaping levels to soften the transition, to keep the natural slope, and not to impose the new landscaping on the area with hard edges. The RMA landscaping will, in future, tie into the project’s landscaping as a natural extension of the design. Pedestrian access to the site was designed with the pedestrian movement through the precinct in mind. From Umhlanga Rocks Drive, pedestrian access was introduced to the podium level through an accessible ramp and a stair down. From Ntusi Road, access is provided through a stair to the podium level, while on the corner, on-grade access was provided that could also be used for deliveries to the coffeeshop. The positions and angles of the various access routes were influenced by the buildings’ shape, its axes created, and the relationship/position of the pedestrian routes around the site. Another important element of the client brief was to keep the area between the two buildings as flexible as possible for future functions, and as a spill-out area for both buildings.

50

Pro Landscaper Africa | October 2018

PORTFOLIO

To that end, a row of trees was designed on the axis between the buildings, in combination with built-in and movable planters to create the necessary flexibility. Sourcing Materials The materials sourced for the project were a combination of materials which had been successfully implemented in other projects and included materials that were sourced to complement the colours used in the project to achieve continuity. Neither the building nor the landscaping should in anyway overpower the other. The materials selected are symbiotic to the building. Pro Landscaper catches up with the Ochre Office’s Karen Marais, who consulted on a few layouts and details regarding the exterior landscape. With regards to irrigation, no irrigation was installed; however, hand-watering is taking place for the first 12 months following completion to ensure the planting establishes itself. As a requirement of the Ridgeside Management Association as well as the Green Buildings principles guiding the project, all plants chosen are indigenous, and defined as xeriscaping as they rely on the natural rainfall of the area and no additional irrigation is required.

Paragon, established in October 1997, is an internationallyactive African design business, based in Johannesburg. It delivers commercial architecture, master planning, interior design, and space planning to visionary clients in all property sectors.

The planting is designed to be a massed mix of both soft, textured and structured planting. Bands of selected plants form extensions of the lines defined by the building planter walls, radiating out from the building to the sidewalk. Much of the planting selection was dictated by the Ridgeside Development Manual (Precinct Guidelines).

We are committed to Africa and believe in the future of its cities. Our roots are here. We have much to offer. We are able and agile, and actively participate in the continent’s urban and human development. Paragon is flexible and diverse in its approach to design. Each project is unique and not driven by style, but by lifestyle and a response to user needs. Elegant and efficient planning form the core of our designs. We understand the needs of our clients and know how to generate ever new architectural forms in a competitive property market.

Hard Landscape Elements As noted above, Ochre worked on the design and setting out of the paving – tying in with tiling alignment of the open atrium and of course finding that transition to blend into the existing sidewalk. The timber specified for the decks and benches was Balau as this wood tends to weather well in the humid Natal climate. Water Features All water features operate from a central pumproom in the basement and are designed to run as chemically-treated systems. The five features vary in their operation, some being reflection pools, and others incorporating foam jets or cascading spills. www.prolandscaper.co.za

SOMERSET LAKES CLUBHOUSE Somerset Lakes and its surroundings offer countless activities for visitors and residents alike and many amenities amidst an attractive and serene environment. The estate is proud to have Reddam House Somerset onsite, which facilitates effortless living with easy access to education. Somerset West’s state-of-the-art indigenous nursery is a never-ending supplier of Somerset Lakes’ award-winning landscape. The five-star clubhouse, with sparkling swimming pool, overlooks the six-hectare lake, backed with the stunning scenery of the Helderberg. Planning Partners designed the landscape, with implementation of the gardens by Atlanticscapes.

PORTFOLIO

The Brief for Planning Partners was to take this prominent space and turn it into a place that appeals to everyone and where they are welcome. A naturalistic waterfront and boardwalk to nowhere, offering both peace and activity and nature at the water’s edge. Atlanticscapes’ work on the clubhouse gardens lasted 3 months. The project started in November 2016 and was completed in January 2017. The clubhouse island started in May 2016 but was completed only in October 2016 as the project was brought to a halt for 2 months, due to the dam filling rapidly during one rainfall. Work started again once the bridge to the island had been built. The project was commissioned by Omwieco, the developers of the Somerset Lakes estate. The landscape was designed by Trevor Dix at Planning Partners. The clubhouse architects were KMH Architects and the Engineers were Ingerop South Africa, part of an extensive professional team. The clubhouse is the focal point of Somerset Lakes development, positioned centrally and wedged between the Stone Pine forest behind and the old farm dams in front. Indigenous gardens flow from the pool area to the dam, providing various semi-secluded spaces for groups to picnic or just sit and enjoy the view. Including a play area meant that both children and parents are suitably entertained during their visit. The diverse indigenous planting palette has proven to be incredibly popular with the local birdlife with a large variety of birds having been spotted around the clubhouse. One of the more difficult items of the installation was the sourcing of large rock. In total more than 50 large boulders averaging 1m x 1,5m in size, many weighing more than a ton, were sourced from JKT Rocks based in Somerset West. Once the boulders had been hand-picked the problem of delivering them arose. Regular sized trucks were not suitable to transport the rock as there were concerns of damaging the trucks when loading the boulders. So, a mine dump truck was brought in to transport the rock from the quarry to site.

Size: 4150m² Landscape installation: 5 months Cost: R1.5 million Location: Somerset Lakes Client: Omwieco

The clubhouse island was conceived late in the project development and was created to accommodate people for functions and events, and as a starting point for across-the-dam swimming. This corner of the dam was unsightly as it had silted up, so the island was built with material from desilting and deepening the dam. Pro Landscaper Africa | October 2018

PORTFOLIO

The island events lawn turns its back to the notorious South-Easter with a protective berm, trees and shrubbery breaking the wind. As mentioned earlier the clubhouse island was interrupted during installation. Originally the island was a small little tuft of land no more than 20 square meters right on the dam edge. A coffer dam was constructed around the old island and the area where the new island and desilting was planned. The little water that was left in the coffer dam was pumped out. Once the civil earthworks had been completed the island was graded to the final levels and the soil prepared with lots of compost. The coffer dam allowed the trucks to deliver the compost and trees directly onto the island. Just after the trees had been planted there was a huge cloud burst which resulted in the coffer dam around the island being flooded. A surge of storm water broke through a section of the coffer dam wall and the empty area around the island filled within an hour. By the next morning the lake was full. Unfortunately, only half of the project had been installed when this happened. Approximately 30 boulders 0.5m in diameter still had to be placed, which were to function as a seat and to retain the protective berm. The lawn and plants also needed to be taken onto the island, and the remainder of the installation was put on hold until the bridge from the boardwalk to the island had been built. The task of moving the boulders onto the island, together with the rest of the material needed to finish the project, was then undertaken by hand.

Another aspect which can become an issue on a development of this scale is the availability of water, especially with the recent drought the Western Cape has been experiencing. Fortunately, all the landscaping at Somerset Lakes is irrigated using water from their dam. The irrigation system is set up to have lawns and plant beds on different stations. In addition, all the 150 odd trees are on their own station. Each tree has its own bubbler so if the need ever arose only the trees can be watered and not the rest of the landscape. This has had its benefits. Many of the trees have more than doubled in size in the last 18 months since they have been planted. This can be attributed to good soil preparation and each tree getting a proper watering every time the irrigation system operates. One more unusual component of this project is the perched beach. The beach is wide enough for a volleyball court and accommodates boulder bench seats and a naturalistic boulder and log play structure. Being a beach, the sand had to be deep enough for kids to be able to dig holes and build sandcastles, so the beach was excavated to 0.5m deep. The base of the beach is lined with bidum, and rock packed along the boardwalk edge from the base ground level up to the underside of the boardwalk. The rock is backed with bidum which contains the sand and prevents it from being eroded into the lake, while the natural rushes stabilise and establish along the water’s edge. From the clubhouse there is a seamless transition from terrace to lawn, to beach, to boardwalk, to water; to the view beyond. Somewhere.

PIONEERING PLAY The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) is a top educational facility located just to the north of Johannesburg, near to Dainferne and Steyn City, in Midrand. The School regularly considers improvements to its existing facilities and as such decided to build a new playground on an eastern portion of the existing school grounds. With a motto that reads “Together we dare to imagine, inspire to succeed, and courageously make a difference” its no wonder that their newest addition of a children’s playground is nothing short of awe inspiring! The project had a brilliant team at the helm, comprising design by Insite Landscape Architects, installation by Greenacres Landscapes and custom design, supply and installation by Microzone Trading 980cc. This project has also recently won Microzone Trading 980cc & Tswellapele Plants (joint venture), the prestigious SALI Shield of Excellence at the 2018 awards to validate its pioneering nature in outdoor play.

Cost: R4.5 Million Timeline: 3 months Size: 8900m2 Location: American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) , Midrand.

The Site The site was bounded by a wetland along the entire eastern boundary and existing sports fields lie to the west of the site. An existing roadway was located to the north and the site itself had an existing small timber play structure and shade cloth area. The site had a strong fall or slope down from north to south. Construction of the new playground Construction of the playground started with the shaping and construction of 3 terraces to create comfortable level playing surfaces or platforms for the children. The platforms are circular, consisting of soft artificial fiber and are connected by paved walkways. The center piece of the platforms and some of the surrounding play areas are especially custom designed play equipment. Custom designed play equipment The playground has many pieces of custom designed and colorfully painted play equipment which, as a culmination of elements, create a fantastic play zone for the children. Microzone Trading 980cc was appointed for the manufacturing of all the specialized play equipment and made a major contribution to the success of the project because of their involvement. Microzone Trading 980cc have also recently won the SALI Shield of Excellence, largely for their exquisite work on this project. Specialized custom designed play equipment included the following elements: •

An aesthetic and awe inspiring yellow and blue painted “Rocket Tower” is the feature Landmark of the playground. The tower is approximately 8 meters high with the main element showcasing long steel poles. This element required structural engineering input. Children can climb up the core of the structure to the “second floor” for great views and then take a spiral enclosed fiberglass “python” slide back down to the bottom. It is an exhilarating experience and has proved to be a big hit on the playground.

Two wide concrete slides leading to next terrace which are custom built and designed so that two children can slide down simultaneously.

Circular spanned swings frame a few of the terraces.

A specially designed roped climbing tower

www.prolandscaper.co.za

is the main feature of the second terrace or second floor. The special rope was of key importance to the project and again is used to highlight and encourage different skills on each level. •

Fun framed steel maze structures provide hide and seek elements and nodes around the lower terraced area of the rocket. If you manage to make your way to the very top terrace of the structure you will find trampolines and “hanging baskets.” The different levels provide intrigue and appeal to different motor skills within the children adding to its excitement.

The play equipment needed to be colourful and attractive but also, most importantly, it needed to encourage the children’s development during play, so duly noted this aspect was of paramount

importance for this project. This was well achieved by Microzone Trading 980cc through their technical input from engineers and through the impressive quality of the finishes on the products. The quality of the finishes is especially important because it ensures that no surfaces or edges will cut or harm the children in any way. Insite Landscape Architects believe that the playground is very successful as witnessed by the children playing on it, around it, amidst it and the very positive comments they have received from the teachers has been good confirmation. Children can be incredibly good judges of products because their honesty and willingness to experience things is in many respects a litmus test. The play equipment has been incredibly successful based on the roaring reaction and Insite Landscape Architects is extremely proud of the project and end result.

Greenacres Landscapes were the landscaping contractors involved on this project and assisted in bringing the vision to life. Peet van der Merwe explains that their contract involved quite an array of skill in both soft and hard elements of the build: Final earthworks and levels to all hard landscaping and soft landscaping areas; Preparation for paving, playground and equipment areas; Installation of all paving; Installation of all rubber areas under equipment; Construction of ramp at entrance; Sub-surface drainage; Irrigation; Planting of trees, shrubs and groundcovers; All Furniture, benches and finishes. Some notable challenges on this project included the short period of installation as the contract had to be built and completed during the summer break of the school. The play area is also situated next to a wetland area, so Greenacres Landscapes had to ensure that most of the runoff water ran into the wetland to keep its natural feed continuing. The team therefore had to install sub-surface drainage to assist with this aspect. There were numerous meetings with an environmentalist to ensure that all of these aspects work. Safety The children’s safety was a big priority to the installation of the trampolines. Greenacres had to add additional rubber to ensure that it is safe if a child falls and also adheres to all safety guidelines. Earthworks; base preparation, installation of paving, construction, fencing, irrigation and planting was all sourced and installed by Greenacres. The only work that needed to be sub-contracted was the rubberizing and artificial turf which was done, quite beautifully by

Mat Marketing. The project was completed, with the end result being impactful, investing in the children's educational play development skills along with AISJ. The very colourful and appealing playground with all the different shades, nuances and textures made for a memorable project indeed. Microzone Trading 980cc’s Zak Prinsloo explains that the client required play equipment that was of an incredibly high standard and equally as safe. The concept had to be very carefully planned and designed for practical yet durable usability. Majority of the play equipment is a first of its kind in South Africa type of product, which was exciting because the team got to work on a somewhat pioneering project. It called for innovation and custom elements which were created locally where possible with some elements imported from various locations across the globe. This was by far one of the most exciting, yet challenging play equipment projects the team has ever worked on. Microzone Trading 980cc had to work closely with other contractors all within the same space which is never easy- as everyone needs to finish their respective work and every aspect of the build is dependent on each other’s hands-on approach to meet deadlines and work together. Managing the production and installation locally was one thing, but managing the product design, lead times, time differences and manufacturing internationally was another aspect completely. The general feeling at the end of this project however was one of elation, as all of the teams were so proud that the elements came together to create a beautiful space for the students that exceeded expectations.

SMART SOPHISTICATION: The Great Westerford

This 32 293m2 Great Westerford building is located in Rondebosch, Cape Town and offers a superb working environment with atriums, courtyards and all of the facilities that make-up a contemporary working environment. In its prominent location on 240 Main Road, this beautifully renovated building offers a classic, stately feel with the added advantage of the availability of cutting-edge data technology and facilities, brilliant parking bay ratio, onsite café and gymnasium. Urbanveld Landscape Architect’s designed the planting for two atriums as well as the new southern courtyard at this pristine office park, with interior plantscaping by Servest & exterior courtyard by Langverwacht Landscaping.

Size: 1200m² (courtyard) / atriums on various levels Timeline: 9 months Cost: R2.8 Million Location: Rondebosch, Cape Town. Client: Leaf Capital

PORTFOLIO

Urbanveld were approached by Leaf Capital and Decam Interior Architects to redesign the Southern courtyard and atrium spaces at the Great Westerford office complex on Rondebosch’s busting Main Road. The multifunctional open courtyard space in the Great Westerford office complex is situated above an important data centre belonging to a cellular phone company. There was no exact survey of heights and location for the data centre when Urbanveld was appointed. The brief called for an overall upgrade of the space and to make it fit seamlessly into the refurbished Great Westerford office complex. The courtyard was dissected by a very dark, covered, slate tiled walkway. At the one side the walkway ended in a water feature and split into two curved walkways to connect with different office entrances. The planting in the courtyard was very dated, consisting mostly of rose quartz gravel, exotic phormium’s, conifers and hemerocallis planted in blocks. The Urbanveld team proposed to demolish all existing built planters, carefully removing old soil, gravel, planting and the slate tiled walkway that previously dissected the space, in order to start fresh. The design aimed to create a serene corporate environment with many opportunities for the employees in the building to sit on low

concrete-clad walls to talk or just take a break from the office environment. The idea was to provide spaces and nodes for interaction which ultimately boosts moral in an office environment. The design also had to take into account the fact that the operation of the data centre could not be affected in any way during construction. The Materials The material choices were influenced by the materials chosen by the architects for the interior refurbishment of the building. Timber decking was used along the perimeter, for ease of dealing with drainage and hiding many unsightly manholes below for which removable panels were made in the decking. The team then selected a polished concrete surface for the central walkway because it had to be constructed on the existing walkway concrete slab. The client’s brief called for some small trees and also a lawn area. Once the team rationalised the design and drainage requirements, they designed formal planter boxes cladded with polished concrete panels on all visible sides to contain the new planting. The decision was made to plant only white flowering plants and to keep the amount of different species to a minimum, bearing in mind that the space must appear green and neat all year round with minimal maintenance for future users. A small specie magnolia tree was selected and planted in large pots around the lawn area.

The Atrium The interior atrium spaces had built planters, cladded with red granite and filled with a wide selection of very sparsely planted exotic interior plants interspersed with multi coloured stone chips. Common areas in the building previously had a selection of plastic and beech veneer cladded contract planters in very bad condition from various indoor plant service providers. Decam designed a Walnut veneer trough planter for use in common areas and the granite in the atriums was cladded with Limbali timber. Urbanveld explored various options to plant into the existing built planters and also considered many different plant species. In the end they opted for the most minimalist option and planted 4 large Ficus benjamina trees in each atrium with two species of Sanseveria under them planter on mass, in black removable plastic liners. All gaps in between and liner edges were covered with brown bark nuggets. All plants had to be sourced throughout the country and some had to be specially propagated in record time in order to meet the installation deadline. ABOUT URBANVELD Urbanveld was founded by Gavin Brand in 2012. The office is based in Cape Town, South Africa. Gavin obtained a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pretoria in 2005 and has more than 10 years’ experience as a registered Landscape Architect working on projects abroad and throughout South Africa. The practice was born out of a desire to explore local landscape construction techniques and indigenous materials in order to achieve the highest possible standard of finish on all our projects. We have a fresh outlook on natural, urban and agricultural landscapes and their meaning in today’s society. We enjoy working with a variety of specialists and creative people from very different fields and closely supervise the construction and maintenance of our projects in order to realise our design intent. We aim to develop projects that have beautiful edges or junctions, are robust, sustainable, age well and serve the needs of the client or community they are designed for.
