NEWS SHED THE CONCRETE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCI A TI ON CERTIFICATION SERVICES (CMA CS) HAS U N DE RTA K E N ITS FIRST COMPLETE INITIAL ASSESSMEN TS A N D CERTIFIED A NUMBER OF PRODU CTS ON B E H A L F OF I TS MAIDEN CLIENT, BOSUN BRICKS. Initial assessments were undertaken to test compliance with SANS specifications on a number of different precast concrete products that are manufactured by the company and that need to be certified to meet engineering and architectural specifications. The CMA CS Mark of Approval is the first non-SABS mark to be used in the concrete industry since legislation was changed to allow multiple certification authorities to undertake certification of SANS standards. Born from the need to professionalise the certification of products within the precast concrete industry, CMA CS was established under the wing of the voluntary members’ association for the industry, the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA). This was in response to undue delays in the issuing of SANS certification from the current certification body that had the potential to harm member companies whose products needed certification in order to meet customer requirements.

Traditionally, gravel roads or earth tracks require costly regular maintenance, such as grading. Dr Christina (Ida) Breed is a senior lecturer in the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering, Built environment and Information Technology. She has received a C3 rating from the NRF, making her one of two rated landscape architects in the country. Her research is concerned with open space design and how it relates to natural and cultural contextual issues and identity. Her research demonstrates the importance of the landscape design as part of green infrastructure, urban ecology and socialecological resilience. She is trained in urban ethnography and makes use of qualitative research methods. The findings of her research are relevant to national health issues concerning people and the environment and indicate the importance of quality public open space criteria in the developing world. Dr Breed is currently the President of the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and has published in international accredited journals such as the Journal of Urban Planning and Development. She is passionate about both biodiversity conservation and social consciousness, which has inspired her travels in the developing world.

HIGH AND MIGHTY In the second of a three-part mini series, Paul Newman discusses the design of a roof terrace
M
ost roof terraces are not as big as ground level gardens so they can be tricky to design when the client has a lot of requirements. In general, we keep our designs simple but functional. No matter how small the space, seating should always play a big part in the design. Everyone likes to sit out on their new terrace, and seating creates a great social area where friends can gather, chat and dine. Space is precious, so use minimal materials to make a big impact. This will create an uncluttered look and enhance the overall effect. As discussed previously, weight is an important
factor, so material choice plays a big part in this and should be considered in the overall proposed scheme. For hard surfaces decks are the obvious choice, with plenty of material options available in softwood, hardwood or composite, along with a choice of fixing systems. All flat roofs will slope to aid water run off, so the substructure can be suspended on adjustable pedestals to give a 10

level area. This creates space beneath, perfect for concealing lighting cables or irrigation feed pipes, while also allowing water to drain away naturally beneath the deck into existing gullies. If weight distribution has been checked out properly by a structural engineer then paving options can also be used. Again, set these on pedestals with small spacing gaps between to aid drainage.
NO MATTER HOW SMALL THE SPACE, SEATING SHOULD ALWAYS PLAY A BIG PART IN THE DESIGN Soil can be a dead weight, especially when wet, so it is worthwhile specifying glass reinforced plastic (GRP) planters. These are lightweight yet strong and available in a huge range of shapes, styles and colours to suit every scheme, and of course bespoke options. If you want large planters to add impact and structure, but only intend to fill with smaller plants, then get your supplier to fit a false base half way up the planter. Existing boundary heights to the perimeter should be no lower than 1,100mm for obvious safety reasons. You may be fortunate enough to have attractive glass balustrade to enjoy the view, but if these are unsightly then use rows of planters for attractive screening. Alternatively, the walls can be clad in timber which then gives the opportunity to use different lighting schemes by creating plinths, ledges or overhangs. Tricoya panels also offer excellent design options with a long service life and can be cut, sanded and painted. Many roof terraces have air con units fitted to them. These can be disguised with slatted panels, either in natural timber or painted to fit with your scheme. As long as they can be accessed for maintenance, box them in to fit in with the garden.

We visited Francois de Kock at their head office in Johannesburg to find out more about these industry leaders and their products. DO WE WANT A PERFECT LANDSCAPE?
Ida-Marié Strydom on resilient landscaping with fragile ecosystems.
T
he art of gardening, like any other art form, remains a personal and individual expression. The idea of applying rules to gardening seems almost inconsistent with its aesthetic outcome. Although gardens are judged according certain pre-set criteria when entered into various landscaping and green industry competitions, narrow prescriptions on exactly how gardens should be designed and installed, should never be too restrictive as gardens are places where freedom of creativity is expressed. A garden's beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, rules are there for good reason, especially where garden installation is to be done within 'vulnerable' environments where ecosystems are already under threat and legislative requirements apply. Green building requirements are giving new direction to landscape installations and determines specified fundamentals that are to be incorporated. Natural phenomenons such as climate change demand a refocussed approach to resilient landscape installation and maintenance.

These are fragile but dynamic systems affected by living things (animals, birds and humans) and, predominantly, the climate. Here lies the challenge: try not to disturb the already-fragile ecosystems. Always attempt to improve, or at least work in harmony with the existing landscape.

So what are the rules? Well, in an ideal garden, the mixture of colours, shapes, textures, lines and sizes are all artfully combined to form the perfect landscape. The application of these rules can be basic or complex depending on the landscape 16

OPINION A good design makes installation and maintenance easier, and ensures correct application of water-wise features. Soil preparation is important to ensure waterretention. The application of stones and rocks to serve as water insulation for root systems, may be effective. We could cut down on lawn areas and rather create an architectural feature that looks pleasing and is water-wise. Organic mulch is essential for retaining water and reduces evaporation. Irrigation systems are best for watering gardens as the amounts of water are controlled. Drip-irrigation is an even better watersaving tool, since it allows a set amount of water to drip onto plant beds and straight into the root systems, and can even make use of recycled rainwater. Rainwater and greywater harvesting to nourish eco-conscious gardens are becoming an essential landscape activity and innovations in this area are rife. Indigenous plants and shrubs are usually less thirsty than alien vegetation. The list of things to do to create a water-wise garden is extensive and I have highlighted only a few in the paragraph above. The good news is that there any many new technologies driven
by the Internet of Things (IoT) that are already available to make our challenges of taking care of the fragile ecosystems less daunting. Devices, drones and other items are embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. These are already applied in the landscaping industry and will surely become more popular. All of these newly designed devices can help us to create the 'perfect' landscape. Question remains, do we want a 'perfect' landscape? Is a green space not supposed to be dynamic, evolving, growing, changing with its own set of 'imperfections'? Ecosystems are dynamic and ever-evolving. Should we then strive to design and install ''perfect'' award-winning landscapes, or should we focus on creating landscapes that are in harmony with ecosystems and that are, in the eye of the beholder, nevertheless beautiful?

THE IMPORTANCE OF URBAN GREEN SPACE Ida Breed on why accessible, quality green space is paramount in our city living.
Too often do I hear people say that parks are not used in South Africa or that parks are unsafe. When I visit or drive past parks, especially on weekends, I see them packed with people. When you visit a private open green space like the Botanical garden or the Irene dairy farm you also find them swarming with parents and kids. So why is there the idea that parks are not used or safe? Is it really the case or is it that we are blinded by our perceptions and our upbringing? Do we perhaps feel unsafe when confronted with the unfamiliar, such as people from different social economic class or with different habits and ways of doing? The City of Tshwane has 3% open space managed by Nature Conservation and 5% open space managed by Parks and Horticultural services, this gives a total of 7% semi “accessible” open space. The estimated minimum required open space is 10%, with people not having to walk more than 5-10 minutes to reach a pocket park near their homes. Urban open space is a finite resource that has to be protected, what we lose to development will not come back. Open space is such an important amenity, not only for human recreation and well-being but also for environmental and ecological health in urban areas. Yet, it is hard to find quality public open space in South Africa where sufficient funds are spend to create durable amenities and varied recreation to those that need it most. Our better examples in Pretoria, like Freedom Park or Groenkloof Nature Reserve, are not free to enter but restricted by access fees, which means that many are denied the benefit of this space that was created with taxpayers’ money. So who has www.prolandscaper.co.za
the right to quality open space and amenities? Only those that can afford it… In South Africa basic services like housing or running water receive priority. However, the lack of accessible, quality green space contributes to high stress levels, a lack of physical exercise and thus ailments like obesity, diabetes, aggression and intolerance. Although some needs may seem more urgent, in the greater scheme of things, all human needs are important and need attention, as do environmental needs. The environmental benefits from green space include regulation of climate, storm water and extreme events. In the long run a lack of green areas can result in serous disasters and degradation of people and their environment. So what do we need? We need quality outdoor and recreational areas throughout the city, and more “wild” green space that can fulfil spiritual and therapeutic functions. Too long has the perception reigned that green space must be maintenance free. Just as highways and streetlights need to be maintained, so do green spaces. Why should living things be free of maintenance but dead matter get priority for expenditure? It is time to question what we see and have in our cities. Most often a proper sidewalk to walk along is hard to find, and we become used to seeking private access and controlled areas to relax outdoors. The city is also what we make of it; community initiative to create food gardens or play areas and maintain them is increasing internationally. As much as we know that this is a function that the state should assist with, we also need to take action and make a difference.

Have you always known you wanted to be involved in the landscape architectural industry? I wanted to be a barrister as a kid, and came to the landscape industry by accident. I dropped out of school at 15 in the 1980’s and was doing nothing and a friend of my mothers offered to pay me to sweep her yard. While I was doing that, she heard on the radio that the local technical college was offering gardening courses and offered to enroll me. I thought, “Well, I have nothing else on, no harm”. One thing lead to another and 30 years later I have a PhD in gardening! What made you make the move abroad and how would you interpret the difference between the perceptions of Landscape Architecture in SA as opposed to Australia? I had zero interest in South Africa, then I met my (now) wife and came over to meet her family and was impressed with Cape Town. I was bored by Australia and the US, so South Africa seemed like an interesting sideways move. After marrying my wife, coming here is the best decision I ever made: I love the place. The perception of landscape architecture between Australia and South Africa comes down to inequality. Regardless of where you are in the world, when you say you are a landscape architect, people ask “Can you do my garden?” (My answer is always “Yes, so long as you build

it how I design it”). But in South Africa where there is real poverty, some people have no exposure at all to what landscaping even is. One of the guys working on a garden I built in Higgovale asked me while we were laying it, “Is this paving?” He had never seen it before. So what landscape “is” is different to different people, here, and everywhere. That’s why at UCT we are undertaking the “Gardens of Europe” project where we are documenting gardens in the informal settlement of Europe, near the airport in Cape Town, and asking
residents about gardening. All gardeners are ultimately the same: they want their plants to grow and they have tips to share. You are of course an academic- attaining your PhD from the University of Queensland in 2013, and along with many published works, this paper is now being adapted into a book for release by MIT press this year… not to mention the fact that you are also the senior lecturer for the master of landscape

architecture degree at UCT currently… How have you managed to juggle the practical aspect of this career path with the academic as they are of course very different in certain respects? In my work history I have, until the last 5 years, had 2 years on, 2 years off with academia. And I have always had projects on the go, both big consultancies through the university but mostly garden design for well known architects. I think it is vital to practice if you are going to teach. And in my teaching I refuse to separate creativity and practicality, so I expect my students to be very ambitious in terms of design but pursue design development and materiality with the same rigor. What is your most noteworthy project to date and why? My most noteworthy project is probably helping develop the landscape architectural practice Aspect Studio’s in Australia and co-founding the Sydney office with Sacha Coles. The work they have done since is their own, but I am proud to have planted the seed that has produced such great landscape architecture. Another project I am really enjoying right now is a garden that I designed and constructed recently in Higgovale, where we excavated a lot of granite from the site and reused it in the garden, also reusing plants in the garden that might otherwise been regarded as weeds. Since my book is about the relationship between gardening and landscape architecture, it’s nice to get my hands dirty again.

What would you highlight as something our industry could be doing better/ needs to give attention to moving forward as an industry? People. When I had no skills, no matric, someone took a risk with me and gave me, an unskilled laborer, a leg up. Later, when I was working first for a landscaper, and then at a council, I was given time off to do my apprenticeship and my fees were paid. It was expected that you invested in your staff and then when I wanted to go to university, I was accepted by a great university RMIT in Melbourne to do my Bachelors of Landscape Architecture on the basis of an interview, despite not having matric. In Australia we didn’t have a black work force to do all the hard work: I was it, I was the “garden boy” (to use a word I find very offensive). Unfortunately the previous tech’s here are trying to be universities and the paths from laboring into skilled trades seem poorly articulated.

What would you describe as key elements you enforce within your students before they are qualified and ready to enter the job market to look for work from developers? Often people think that “design” is just styling or craziness, but for me it is about seeing the potential in something, not closing down options because they seem unconventional, and being adaptable. So for me “design thinking” is the ability to think on your feet and know how to ask the right questions. Other than that, the main thing I am working with our students on in terms of work readiness is BIM/Revit. If we don’t engage with this the industry is going to find itself really behind.

It is hard for me to comment on this, since I am one of these pesky foreign landscape architects. It is true that you cant fake local experience, but, as I made the point above, I think that there is an element of gate keeping and not sharing that might be hampering the development of skilled locals. There is a profusion of people that want to work if only the industry didn’t treat them as cheap labor, unworthy of investment Who has influenced you? Graham Fletcher, a landscape architect who taught at tech who suggested I go to Uni and study landscape architecture; my first design teacher Peter Connolly, who taught me that you can learn most of what you need to about landscape architecture by looking around you in a new way; Danish landscape architect Sven-Ingvar Andersson and French landscape architect Gilles Clément, who both understood the relationship between landscape design and garden maintenance; Dieter Kienast, whose sense of minimalism in the landscape was beautifully restrained and German landscape architect Gustav Lange whose messy Mauerpark in Berlin remains a favourite.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES Set on site of the picturesque Vergelegen Estate, OvP revamps the historic rose garden so that it can reach its blooming potential.
The brief The rose garden at Vergelegen was designed and installed in the 1980s and was well admired but no longer blooming to its full potential. The brief for OvP was to replace the full garden and to create a new world class rose garden that would enchant both novices and rosarians alike and hold its own within Vergelegen’s portfolio of extensive cultivated gardens. It was important for the garden to be as captivating when viewed on arrival as the look and feel of each bloom up close. It was also important that the garden read as a cohesive element and not as a smarty box of heights and colour. How this was achieved The rose garden is located at the edge of the camphor forest on the site of the old tennis courts. The camphors form a magnificent amphitheatre to the south and west of the site, and to the north the rose terrace and screen planting provide a framed view of the homestead and historical camphor trees. The previous rose garden was a fraction of its current size and stood as an object within space. In response OvP designed the rose garden to inhabit the full space available and to respond to its unique and strikingly beautiful context. The octagon has a long history as a spatial informant at Vergelegen, so OvP chose this formal geometry as the starting point for the layout. existing picnic building and a double path was set out either side of this axis. The central octagon is offset with concentric pathways which all intersect with diagonal paths. Together these pathways form meandering routes through the rose garden so that visitors may experience a wide array of the many different rose varieties on show and come to appreciate their individual colour and fragrance. The impression one receives when walking into the rose garden space was an important driver in the design. The two main arrival points are via pedestrian routes from the homestead to the North and the Library and Wine Tasting Centre to the North East. On the approach the rose garden is screened from view and the visitor turns a corner to be confronted with the rose garden in its entirety. It was therefore important to create a garden that is both striking and cohesive. The selection of rose varieties and their placement were carefully considered to provide a gradient of colour that transitions from reds, oranges, yellows to whites to light and deep pinks and purples and a gradient of height from the smallest miniatures in the centre to the tall spires and scramblers on the
outskirts where the garden meets the Camphor Forest. A cottage style herbaceous border with heritage roses frames the picnic building at the end of the axis. The central feature is a sculpture, entitled Aphrodite, by artist Stansilaw Trezbinski. Water drips from the sculpture into an octagonal pool of water that she stands in. The water feature was designed in collaboration with and built by Water in Motion. The pergolas were designed to provide structured backdrop to the rose garden and support for the outer layer of tall, scrambling and climbing roses. The pergola covers the outer rose garden pathway and provides moments to pause and appreciate views across the garden. The design detailing was a variation-on-a-theme of the pergola that was designed for the East Garden. The ‘Vergelegen yellow’ masonry pillars and rhythm of heavy overhead timber beams speak to the exposed ceiling beams within the homestead and to the language of architecture across the estate.

MODERN MEETS INDIGENOUS Set on one of Midrand’s most sought after development sites, this build ticks all of the boxes when it comes to a modern office environment. Countryline Africa, contracted to build the design and vision of landscape architect Daniel Rebel, succeeded in implementing a clean, indigenous landscape which supersedes the brief. Maxwell Office Park is an upmarket office development in the heart of Waterfall City in Midrand. The landscaping had to be bold, sleek and in many cases functional in order to tie the various phases of the park together and create an inviting and flowing link between all of the buildings and facilities. Although Danie Rebel from DRLA had the overall landscape design and integration master plan firmly in place from the start, the phasing of the project meant that each section was treated as a separate design, with its own irrigation and hard landscaping elements. This meant that the tying-in of Phases to one another was tricky to ensure the seamless flow between each building and the outdoor spaces created by the modern, bold design. Special attention must be drawn to the quality of the materials used throughout and the numerous bespoke landscape elements and furniture created within the development. Attacq whose offices are located in Building 2. Each phase needed to be delivered on spec and on time, ensuring that co-ordination and teamwork was required by all parties. The Landscaping The landscaping comprises of all indigenous planting and lawn with the exception of the All Seasons Evergreen lawn installed on the podiums at each building. The design has created private outdoor entertainment areas for each building and a seamless network of pedestrian pathways, intensive planting, flowing lawns and a passive outdoor spaces in the green belts between each phase of the development. Storm-water attenuation is also handled within the landscaped areas although they blend effortlessly into the landscape and are hardly noticeable. Overall the design and landscaping contrasts against the modern architecture of the buildings and the peripheral planting and trees assist in bringing some scale to the buildings, allowing them to blend into the landscape rather than just sit in it.
Sourcing the Materials As with most projects of this nature, sourcing of the various materials required can be tricky and quality was Countrylines number 1 priority. URBAN ROOF by Harrington porter
T
his project was for my own garden in Battersea – as the company director at Harrington Porter, this meant there was no client to pull design features or change the design in the middle of the process. We were much freer to incorporate everything that was desired without the added element of client relations. The brief My aim was to create a usable and stylish extension to my flat. Its French windows will be changed to bifold doors in due course which look directly on to the garden, which is a small south facing plot, 6m long by 5m wide.

I wanted space to sit in both sun and shade, a cooking area and a place to hang out with family and friends. I wanted the garden to look great from the house, so consideration of the views from the windows was key. I desired minimal maintenance, but for the garden not to be stark or barren. Design and build The work was carried out by our guys, fitting it in between jobs, weekends and through the odd slow month. The build could have taken four weeks, but took over four months. The garden was gutted, the left fence replaced with a rendered fence and slatted painted trellis which I continued around the garden for added privacy. The rendered blockwork was next and formed the shape of the raised bed, built-in seating and kitchen area. Blockwork was also used to create steps down from the living area. A Millboard deck was formed as a continuation from the internal oak flooring with joint lines running in tandem, and a larger step was built to the left for sun loungers on the grandly named 'sun deck'. The centrepiece was a built-in LPG gas burner with removable Millboard lid to double as a coffee table. A Green Egg smoker was built in to a Millboard kitchen area and the back splash was clad using matching limestone tiles which I took all the way up the wall for some vertical interest. Hardwood logs were placed in the kitchen bench as a finishing touch. Lighting was a collection of 35W spike lights, fairy lights in the olive tree, festoon lights, recessed spots and a directional wall light for cooking. A shade sail was erected for shade and privacy from neighbouring houses. The planting involved a large feature olive, and underplanting of annuals, white tulips and purple alium bulbs. Climbers were evergreen jasmine and rose 'Madame Alfred Carrière'.

A
luxury international property developer selected this late 19th century property in Knightsbridge to renovate into premium apartments, with an adjoining roof terrace to the rear. In the short term, the roof terrace served to attract buyers by reflecting the high level of quality associated with this particular developer, as well as innovative design solutions to combat a very difficult small site, whilst having to provide a series of elegant and contemporary garden spaces. The brief In response to the client brief, Aralia's design divided the space into three key areas which helped reduce the existing ‘corridor’ effect. These areas consisted of a dining area which linked with the kitchen, a lounge area with fire pit to provide a luxurious seating and entertaining space, and a small intimate snug area which linked to the master bedroom. Elements including outdoor dining and luxury lounge area, extravagant fire pit, cascading water feature, structural archways and raised planters were designed to not obstruct views or light going into the building, whilst creating the required level of privacy. Planting was designed to contrast with more contemporary and clean geometries used in the hard features, taking a more traditional form which reflected the classical feel of the interior. Development Aralia was also commissioned to design a full range of landscape plans, including the garden lighting and garden irrigation plans. The garden design company worked as landscape architects in a multi-disciplinary consultancy team which included a range of subcontractors. Aralia also provided a soft landscaping supply and install service. Liaising with suppliers and conducting in-depth research into products enabled Aralia to select the correct materials that worked together in the best way for the purpose intended. A variety of trusted suppliers for both hard and soft landscape elements were used.

Challenges Like many small London terrace gardens, this garden came with many constraints, particularly relating to privacy. The terrace was sandwiched between two terrace rows and

therefore was significantly overlooked by the adjacent neighbouring property, together with apartments on upper floors. The design of this space had to carefully consider how privacy could be achieved without limiting the existing light levels which, due to its aspect, were far from ideal. Another constraint was the fact that the terrace was on a podium above the basement level and therefore weight limitations and build-up requirements were very restricted, and had to be carefully coordinated with the project engineer. Unique features Water feature The water feature was a huge challenge as the client wanted a 'wow' feature in a tiny space. Aralia created a walk-over design that allowed the feature to be of a significant size without interrupting the flow of the space. Metal arches The roof terrace was dominated by five storey buildings on both sides. Aralia incorporated metal arches to provide a ceiling that made it feel more private and less overlooked than it actually was. Cantilever oak bench In the tiny area, space is of a premium and this is why Aralia chose to design a bespoke L-shaped oak bench to provide maximum seating.

GARAPA BY RARE WOODS Garapa timber is just one of the 150 species on offer at Rare Woods. It is perfect for outdoor applications and is primarily used for decking. This hardwearing and incredibly durable timber, being light yellow when planed, is light brown in colour with an even grain pattern and ages to a lovely grey with time. Rated by rare woods on a par with Balau.
