You’re invited to join us at the

October 2024 sees Hardscape celebrate our 30th anniversary by doing something unique –giving you the chance to speak directly to some of our key supply partners in our global supply chain!

With over 100m2 of display space, Hardscape have material samples and representatives from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, the UK & Ireland.

Don’t miss this chance to speak directly to manufacturers & quarries about the incredible range of products that only Hardscape can bring together.

We are incredibly proud to bring you a superb selection of products, suppliers and services to this year’s Public Spaces Expo, that all contribute to design projects in the public realm. The diverse selection of exhibitors on show this year will provide inspiration for local authorities, property developers and design and build contractors as we navigate changing legislation and standards coming into play and seek innovations to help our projects succeed. Yet again, our incredible CPD accredited seminar and debate schedule will echo these themes and aim to educate all, as we hear from experts and thought leaders on these subjects.

2024 has seen the exciting addition of Stonescape Expo, a fresh new exhibition showcasing the use of natural stone products within the landscaping industry. StoneScape Expo will be a marketplace centred around quality product acquisition, responsible stone sourcing, improved sustainability and promoting the use of natural stone in commercial, public realm and domestic landscaping professionals. With the help of Stone Federation of Great Britain, we have created a compelling seminar agenda that complements the supplier portfolio perfectly. We aim to leave you educated on a range of pertinent talking points in this space, as well as dissect a range of case studies that incorporate natural stone. With natural stone being one of the most sustainable, eco-friendly and durable building materials on the planet, the global natural stone market is expected to reach a valuation of $50.4bn by 2030, and so it was a natural step for us to shine light on this area through our exhibition platform (that has consistently received thousands of visitors from this market over the last 12 years at FutureScape).

Based on these developments and the shift in focus, we couldn’t have hoped for a better fit for our official headline partner; Hardscape. We are proud to have Hardscape as the official sponsor of both StoneScape and Public Spaces Expo this year. Don’t miss the chance to speak directly to the team on their stand V54 and also Hardscape’s dedicated village at the show, which boasts some of its other key supply partners in its global supply chain.

A focal feature of Public Spaces Expo this year will be the ‘Street of the Future’ walkway we have created in the core of the floorplan. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to see some key suppliers and innovations that could be incorporated in the public realm, so stop by and see some incredible brands such as Ketley Bricks, Teqball, Taylor Made Planters, Solid Soul Design and Lindum Turf that have all contributed.

Check out the Public Spaces seminar theatre this year as we cover a range of key topics such as reducing carbon in the landscaping sector, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and opportunities that biodiversity net gain provides in the public realm.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition portfolio and make the most of everything we have to offer, and we warmly welcome you to stop by our stand (N10) to catch up!

Meet the team What to expect

Forward-thinking discussions in our theatre

This year’s seminar programme tackles some of the key topics impacting how public spaces are being designed, constructed and maintained. We’ll be exploring the opportunities created through biodiversity net gain becoming legislation earlier this year, the need for SuDS to be nature-led, implementing the benefits of brownfield sites into new landscapes, and why procurement arguably needs a shakeup.

Not-for-profit Future of London will be leading a discussion around designing actively inclusive spaces, and professional body the Landscape Institute will share the work it has been undertaking by collaborating with others in the industry to reduce carbon in the landscape sector.

A look into the future

A new ‘Street of the Future’ will allow visitors to immerse themselves in cutting-edge design. They’ll be able to walk through a showcase of how technology and sustainability are impacting the way public realm is designed and built to create smarter, greener and cooler cities.

A new co-located show

Launching this year, the brand-new StoneScape Expo in partnership with Hardscape and in association with the Stone Federation, will be an impressive display of some of the latest products, technologies, services and initiatives of stone in the landscaping sector.

Alongside leading exhibitors in the sector, StoneScape will feature a dedicated two-day seminar programme. The line-up includes talks on ethical sourcing, the use of BS 7533 to deliver sustainable stone landscapes, and a behindthe-scenes discussion of the recent project at the Natural History Museum.

Hardscape – which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – will also have its own ‘village’, bringing together companies from across its supply chain.

CPD accreditation for visitors

Public Spaces Expo and StoneScape Expo have partnered with The CPD Group to provide Continuous Professional Development (CPD) accreditation to visitors, who will receive a CPD accreditation certificate by scanning one of two barcodes – one for each day of the event. These will be available to scan in each of the theatres for visitors to claim their accreditation.

Realising Its Potential: The Opportunities of Biodiversity Net Gain

Nina Mason | Brian Hawtin | Peter Massini | Helen Simmen | Tom Butterworth | Tara Garraty

This year saw the introduction of the eagerly awaited legislation, which mandates a 10% biodiversity gain on new developments and a 30-year management plan. Is it proving to be as successful as hoped? Where are the biggest opportunities for those working in the public spaces sector? What do designers and contractors need to consider when choosing solutions for each site, and how can suppliers assist to ensure success? Our panel discusses the ongoing impact of Biodiversity Net Gain.

Designing for diversity in public spaces

Anna Odedun | Al Mathers | Bridget Snaith | Jennie Savage

We know that public spaces are key sites for enabling social connections, cultural expression, recreation, and heritage. But not all spaces are welcoming to everyone. People can perceive a place’s suitability for them based on subtle signs and signals. It’s understood that co-design is essential to making public spaces that work for all. What does an actively inclusive space look like? How can place-makers empower diverse ‘authors’ to shape public space? Join us to find out.

Benefits of Brownfields: Bringing these into new schemes

John Little

Existing brownfield sites are some of the most important places in our landscape, and there are ways to incorporate these materials and structures back into new landscapes to reap the benefits of biodiversity. Expert John Little explains how to recreate the habitats found on brownfield sites – and in an aesthetic way that keeps the local community and clients on the same page.

Making SuDS Mandatory: The need for nature-based solutions

Nina Mason | Kevin Barton | Terry Smithson | Jacqueline Diaz-Nieto | Cristina Refolo Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are set to become mandatory for new developments in England, making it a requirement for them to be considered for managing surface water and rainwater. How does this affect scheme designers, and could it be a good opportunity for the sector? Hear from our panellists on why incorporating SuDS is more important now than ever – providing nature is at the heart of our approach.

WEDNESDAY 16 OCTOBER

Can new contractors succeed in the commercial sector?

Our panel shares their experiences in trying to develop their businesses and secure more “lucrative” commercial contracts. They explain why they have focused on this and the areas of help and support they believe are needed that could help grow and enhance the sector by creating more choice.

Driving Innovation: Shaking up the procurement process

Chris Wellbelove | Robert Cunliffe

Is the procurement process overdue for an update? The new Procurement Act 2023, coming into effect in October, is arguably a step towards modernising public sector procurement and could be a game changer. What does the new legislation include, and how could it prove beneficial? Is there another aspect of procurement that better recognises landscapes as living entities? Our panellists consider how a different approach to procurement might enable better relationships between the client and the contractor – and ultimately benefit the end user.

Reducing Carbon in the Landscape Sector: Progress towards solutions

Tracy Whitfield | Romy Rawlings | Stephen Duce

In March 2024, the Landscape Institute and the British Association of Landscape Industries released a pivotal report on reducing carbon in landscape schemes and works. This session gives an update on their progress, focusing on their work to deliver integrated solutions on three key themes – project carbon assessment processes and tools; suppliers, data, and materials; education programmes for landscape practitioners –and their future plans.

Finding Your Niche: Passion | Anger | Mission

Debbie Carroll

Debbie Carroll will share her story of 20 years as a garden designer - the highs, lows and even anger that have shaped her unique journey. To her surprise she has become an expert, not in wildlife friendly gardens as she expected, but in care and dementia gardens. Whether you’re a new or established designer, her story may reveal new opportunities, questions or insights to finding your own niche.

Bridging the Gap: Bringing new entrants into the landscape industry

David Fisher | Wayne Grills | Marcus Potter

Lantra and BALI are working in partnership to understand the barriers to the uptake of apprenticeships by landscaping businesses. Through Lantra’s established research methodology, the project will hear from employers, within the landscaping sector, to understand the barriers as well as informing future solutions. Hear from Wayne Grills, CEO of BALI, and Marcus Potter, CEO of Lantra, talking about the importance of the research and how both organisations are supporting new entrants into the sector.

Green Design Audit: Progress through collaboration

Nina Mason | Liz Nicholson | Wayne Grills | Rachel Bailey | John Wyer | Malcolm Anderson

Developed by Nicholsons, the Green Design Audit has already been incorporated into RHS shows, helping to reduce carbon emissions by 28% across two garden categories at this year’s Chelsea. But it could have a wider impact if adopted by the industry. Leading organisations come together to discuss its launch and offer insight into the potential of the audit in reducing our carbon footprint.

Going International: Broadening Your Horizons

Peter Donegan

Award-winning garden designer Peter Donegan MSGD has designed too many projects abroad, from Gold medal and People’s Choice at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show to two sensitive landscapes at a 13th century chateau. He’ll share his experiences, from winning the work to managing the projects, and the benefits of being bold and taking your practice international.

WEDNESDAY 16 OCTOBER

But It’s Just Dirt: Understanding Soil

Helen Elks-Smith

We talk of soils whilst many of the professionals we work with when creating gardens talk of ‘dirt’ and ‘mud’. Are we talking about the same thing? Does the language used impact what happens on site? And does that matter? Helen Elks-Smith will illustrate her talk with images from her portfolio.

Open to All: Creating a more equal, diverse and inclusive industry

Nina Mason | Darryl Moore | Chris Bridgman | Phil Tremayne

Making horticulture more accessible to all has been a hot topic for the last few years - and rightly so. A more equal, diverse and inclusive industry allows for more creativity and has been known to produce a thriving workforce - one that draws on each team member’s individual backgrounds and experiences. Our panellists have all been working towards diversifying horticulture and ensuring it’s an attractive industry to as many people as possible.
