ello, welcome to the Pro Landscaper RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 supplement. Chelsea is such a fantastic show and it’s always inspiring to see the hard work that goes into it. Working on this supplement has really highlighted what a great event this year is set to be, and I can’t wait to attend my first-ever Chelsea. The big talking point surrounding this year’s show has been the RHS Back to Nature garden, a collaboration between Davies White and HRH The Duchess of Cambridge. On pages 6–7 you can read our exclusive interview with Davies White about this garden. Two gardens in particular have also been hitting the headlines this year for their sponsors; we talk to Joe Perkins on page 9 about working with Facebook and Jilayne Rickards on page 12

on working with The Campaign For Female Education (CAMFED). Earlier in the year some of you kindly answered our RHS Chelsea Flower Show poll and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to do so. The results are in and they gave us an interesting insight into what the industry thinks of Chelsea and how they would like to see it change. You can see these results displayed on pages 4 and 5. Enjoy the supplement, and I hope to see you at the show!

A ROYAL COLLABORATION PRO LANDSCAPER SPOKE TO ANDRÉE DAVIES AND ADAM WHITE, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS AND DIRECTORS OF DAVIES WHITE LTD, ABOUT THE RHS BACK TO NATURE GARDEN THEY’VE DESIGNED ALONGSIDE HRH THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE

I

n September 2018, Andrée and Adam were approached by the RHS and asked if they would like to put themselves forward to co-design the 2019 RHS Garden alongside HRH The Duchess of Cambridge at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The RHS had invited The Duchess to design their garden at the world famous flower show. It was important to The Duchess and the RHS that the garden would highlight the physical and mental health benefits of the great outdoors, and inspire children, families and communities to get back to nature. The first meetings involved the three designers developing a brief together and sharing their own memories of spending time in nature. This led to the creation of a mood board of ideas and images which soon formed the early concept design ideas and working scale

models. Visits to parks, gardens and woodlands followed to look for further inspiration as the design developed. Most recently, the visits have been to suppliers and to meet specialist craftspeople. Inspiration for the garden Step into the garden amongst the wild trees and shrubs and get your nature fix. Feel instantly relaxed as nature surrounds you and works its magic to refresh and calm. Inspired by nature and natural woodland, the playful planting includes incredible edibles, plants for craft activities, forest scents and a diverse

range of plants from tiny wild strawberries to magnificent trees overhead. Unstructured ‘free play’ is important for a child’s development and play in nature has been shown to be especially good for developing creativity, increasing physical activity and reducing stress. The books Nature Fix (Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative) by Florence Williams, Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv and Lost Words by Robert McFarlane (illustrated by Jackie Morris) were also inspiration for the garden. Planting The most important function is the ability of plants to enrich the experience in the natural world of a child where plants provide sensory stimulation, produce shade, and attract interesting visitors from the animal kingdom. The cool calm colour palette of green and blue is restful on the eyes, beautiful textures of large and small leaves draw your attention and lead you on a journey through the garden. The plants will look wild and natural; trees will have low branches that are full of character; plants with single open flowers will represent their wild relations, and there will be an emphasis on texture and shape, with everything looking relaxed and wild in style. The plants will also provide food for wildlife – flowers, fruits, seeds and nectar for bees – as well as nesting sites for

for child play, floating leaves on its surface or chasing them. Playing with water is a great sensory experience, encouraging exploration and concentration. The waterfall will be accessible to all, including less able people or wheelchair users. A playful pathway, made of reclaimed timber, will create a journey through the garden; its surface full of natural colours and textures. It will weave through the garden, around rocks and stepping stones and through the planting. Children can run through the garden or balance from one stepping stone to the next. The rocks also create a place to sit, rest and enjoy the view, the level smooth surface will make the garden welcoming and accessible to all.

t’s undeniable that social media is now part of most people’s everyday lives. As its popularity grows, so too does the controversy surrounding it, and Facebook is no stranger to this. However, the world’s largest social media platform is sponsoring Joe Perkins’ Beyond The Screen garden at this year’s show in a bid to promote the positive effects that social media can have on our lives. Inspired by family holidays to the Basque Country in northern Spain, Joe’s garden will represent our connection with social media through its coastal environment – this strong theme of connectivity runs throughout the

www.prolandscapermagazine.com

Feature Facebook Garden.indd 9

garden. Joe says: “We are all connected physiologically with the ocean as we are all made up of 60% water and because oceans connect the whole world.” Joe contacted Facebook with his idea, and the social media giant was immediately on board. Together, the aim is to challenge preconceptions about what social media is and to make people appreciate the benefits of using these platforms. Beyond The Screen has come under scrutiny, though. Facebook has been accused of using the garden to revive its tarnished reputation after the Cambridge Analytica scandal last year. It was revealed that the data

of millions of Facebook users was improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica, resulting in share prices of the company plummeting and users becoming even more wary of the platform. The company is also facing criticism for the irony of it sponsoring a garden, as children reportedly spend less time outdoors, instead scrolling through their timeline on sites such as Facebook. However, Joe points out how Facebook has a positive impact on the landscaping industry. “There are more than 1.5 million gardening enthusiasts in the UK who are part of a Facebook group that shares knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject,” he says.

He goes on to explains how Swedish schoolgirl and climate activist, Greta Thunberg was able to create a social movement on Facebook, engaging people around the world with the aim of raising awareness over climate change: in more than 112 countries, children walked out of their classrooms to protest – a demonstration which arguably would have had less impact without the impact and reach of Facebook as a platform for change. Facebook sponsorship aside, the garden itself is striking with water being a predominant element that features across a third of the surface area of the rugged and naturalistic space. Layered formations of stone, supplied by CED Stone Group, will also be a key feature. Reclaimed timber from Ashwells Timber will be used for decking. Weathered and covered with barnacles, the timber will be hung over the water, adding to the garden’s authentic look.

The garden will also feature a copper wave shaped canopy, created by Hot Metal Engineering, designed to arch over the top of the garden. The copper metal work links into the theme of connectivity, as it is known for being a good conductor. Plants from all around the world, including New Zealand to Mexico, will include Pistachia lentiscus, Leucophyta, Sedum palmeri and Aeonium arboretum, some of which supplied by Kelways and Deepdale Trees. The garden will be built by The Outdoor Room and Joe is also working in partnership with Groundwork, a national charity who helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Ambassadors from the charity will accompany Joe on trips prior to the show to see the plants, stone and metal being made. They will then join Joe and The Outdoor Room on site to assist with the build. Not only does the garden aim to promote how social media can be used in a positive way, it will also, hopes Joe, inspire people to be creative in a small outdoor spaces. Joe explains: “The garden is about taking inspiration from whatever you find. In this case it’s a natural coastal environment that inspired me personally and I want people to go away and find their own inspiration, then recreate it for themselves.”

Water will make up a third of the surface area of this rugged and naturalistic space

JILAYNE RICKARDS

Giving girls in Africa a space to grow

orking on a show garden can be incredibly stressful, and for London designer Jilayne Rickards, a garden that expresses an important message is worth the stress involved. Established in 1993, CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education) and its innovative education programmes in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Malawi directly support more than 2.6 million students to attend primary and secondary school, and more than 5 million children have benefited from an improved learning environment with more than 120,000 supported into leadership positions. Jilayne first heard about CAMFED through a personal friend, professor Charlotte Watts, who as chief scientific adviser to the UK Department of International Development (DFID) helped source the biofortified crops and solar technologies featured in the garden. These have been produced through UK Aid’s investment in low cost technologies that deliver development benefits. Jilayne quickly identified with the work of CAMFED and in February 2018 the organisation agreed to sponsor the garden. Aligned with CAMFED’s #SeeGrowth campaign, the garden aims to raise £120,000 to support the next 1,000 female-led horticultural and agricultural businesses in sub-Saharan Africa.

FEATURE Research began when Jilayne travelled to Zimbabwe to see CAMFED’s work in action as well as the country’s culture and landscape. During the trip she met Beauty Gombana, a remarkable woman, born into a world that offered her few choices. CAMFED supported Beauty’s further education, and thus enabled her to begin her own agricultural business – a successful and progressive enterprise that grows biofortified Authentic planting crops, and a business that invests in solar According to Jilayne: “We are using true energy. The garden will showcase a 2m x 2m growing bed which features an effective and sustainable water management system, designed to allow water to flow beneath rather than across the top of the bed, reducing evaporation and thus conserving the water. The interior of the bed will be divided in four and make use of a crop rotation system to maximise the yield. This is a concept that Jilayne believes is affordable to construct and an idea that visitors to the garden can take home and recreate themselves.

“We are creating the garden to raise awareness of the charity’s work, not just to the individual but to entire communities, and how this work tackles both poverty and inequality,” explains Jilayne. The garden is multi-layered in its approach with this important message at its core. It is developmental with its inclusion of biofortified crops, beans, maize and sweet potatoes, as well as the water management system and solar power. These elements highlight positive change and progressiveness in Africa. Jilayne comments: “People tend to think that poverty in Africa prohibits progress, but on the contrary, with a just a little assistance, it can affect a truly progressive outlook.” Date Category Drawing Scale

Team spirit This is the first time Jilayne has designed a garden for Chelsea on her own, but she insists that she really is simply part of a great team: “CAMFED has played a large part in the work, helping to source materials from Zimbabwe, while Charlotte has provided useful feedback. The Eden Project has been an excellent resource for checking the plant content and growing an impressive array of unusual plants. Cormac Conway from Conway Landscapes has been very helpful and always up for a challenge. It has been liberating working as part of a team and I am really enjoying it, it’s great!” After the show, the Giving Girls In Africa a Space To Grow garden will be donated to the Eden Project and continue to create awareness of CAMFED. Jilayne hopes her work with the organisation continues as well. “We’ve come this far, I can’t imagine that we wouldn’t continue. It is such a great organisation and I believe it can make a huge difference – who wouldn’t want to support it?”.

2016’S 30 UNDER 30 WINNER, ROSS CONQUEST AND HIS TEAM AT CONQUEST CREATIVE SPACES, WILL BE WORKING ON TWO SHOW GARDENS THIS YEAR – THE ROOTS IN FINLAND KYRÖ GARDEN AND THE PERENNIAL LIFELINE GARDEN

THE PERENNIAL LIFELINE GARDEN

ROSS CONQUEST Do you think it will be challenging to work on two gardens? It’s all about the planning! We are so lucky to be involved with two very exciting and different projects. Working on two gardens this year does have benefits – not having to manage projects in Sussex at the same time allows us to utilise the whole build team and focus fully on the show.

THE ROOTS IN FINLAND KYRÖ GARDEN

I am proud to be working with the first Finnish designer to come to Chelsea, as well as on the first Finnish garden

14

Can you tell us more about the Roots in Finland Kyrö garden? Working alongside designer Taina Suonio has been great and good fun – very Finnish! I am proud to be working with the first Finnish designer to come to Chelsea, as well as on the first Finnish garden. The garden has clean Nordic lines with a traditional feel which represents the natural countryside of Finland brought into an urban setting. For us, the challenging part of the project is creating the big lifts which will be the water feature wall – an impressive 1.8 x 2m installation designed to cascade onto a stainless steel mirror, as well as the grand pair of 3m solid granite benches from Finnish stone supplier Loimaan Kivi.

So far, what progress have you made on both gardens? We have completed a mock-up of the Perennial garden with some APL apprentices and a structural planting set out at Majestic Trees. All the steel and timber framework will soon be ready to hand over to Stark & Greensmith and London Stone for final completion. We have also carried out some pre-fabrication work for the timber frames, bespoke steel screen structures, stone cantilever benches and the huge water reel. For The Roots in Finland Kyrö Garden, we have been working on the stainless steel waterfall, which includes some clever concealed gadgetry, as well as checking all the paving details, such as the jointing methods and so on. The list of other details we check is endless and all this goes on alongside meetings with sponsors, nurseries and other suppliers of course.

Can you tell us more about the Perennial Lifeline Garden? Colm Joseph’s and Duncan Cargill’s winning design with the London College of Garden Design is located in the Great Pavilion and will feature a rose meadow, freestanding metal screens, stone and topiary columns, a pair of modern fountains and a rill running through the whole plot. It is a pleasure to be working with the team at Perennial

What are you most looking forward to? Flying the flag for Sussex at Chelsea this year with James Coleman from Designs by Sussex Landscapes and Will Burberry from Radial Landscapes. It’s the buzz of Chelsea that we enjoy. Personally, I get such an adrenaline rush from it, and all being well this year I’ll enjoy it twice as much, running two very interesting projects. We will just have to wait and see!

on this project and through our involvement with the APL, we will combine some of the UK’s best talent on the build and give the next generation of young apprentices some much valued experience.

LILLY GOMM ONE OF 2017’S 30 UNDER 30: THE NEXT GENERATION WINNERS, LILLY GOMM REVEALS HOW IT FEELS TO BE MAKING HER CHELSEA DEBUT. THIS YEAR SHE WILL BE DESIGNING THE HILLIER NURSERIES EXHIBIT ‘THE STIHL HILLIER GARDEN’, UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF SARAH EBERLE WHO HAS DESIGNED THE EXHIBIT SINCE 2016 THE STIHL HILLIER GARDEN How did you come to work on the Hillier Nurseries exhibit? Last year I volunteered to work with the Hillier planting team and loved it. I was made to feel incredibly welcome and thought volunteering had been such a worthwhile experience. I didn’t expect to hear from them again so when they got in touch and asked if I would design their next exhibit I was quite shocked. I said yes straight away – I never expected that as a result of just five days planting! Can you tell us more about the design of the exhibit? The garden will blend together traditional and contemporary themes making reference to the Hillier ethos of bringing new generations into the horticultural industry. Presenting traditional Hillier plants, hardy perennials, shrubs and trees, against contemporary hard landscaping. There will be two rooms set within the exhibit – the first, a formal dining area and the other, less formal, somewhere to have your morning cup of coffee. Each room will include water installations as a backdrop to enhance the sense of relaxation. The plants are the stars of the exhibit and this year will be taking the opportunity to play with colour. The variety at Hillier Nurseries is a designer’s dream – rather like being a kid in a sweet shop. We’ve had to grow around 5,000

plants even though we will end up using only 3,000 of them because we can never tell how spring will affect the growing year. The extra plants won’t go to waste though, they will be sold in their garden centres.

The plants are the stars of the exhibit, and the variety at Hillier Nurseries is a designer’s dream

How has Sarah helped mentor you? Sarah has been brilliant, a Chelsea veteran herself she is full of worthwhile advice and it has been so helpful to discuss the design over these past months. Having a long standing relationship with Hillier, for someone fresh to the company hearing her experience has been invaluable. The advice to take moments alone on site to scrutinise the previous days work is one I will be taking forward - allowing yourself the time to think clearly before the rush of people arrive.

What do you think the greatest challenge will be? I think the greatest challenge will be completing everything on site in the limited time available. We have five days to plant and then just over one week to build. I think installing the water features will demand most of our time. We have factored this in, but I still think time will be reasonably tight. We also need to make allowances for cleaning, pruning and all those important final finishing touches. How does it feel to be working on your first ever Chelsea garden? Incredibly exciting! It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get on site and really enjoy the camaraderie of working as a team, preparing for the show. The STIHL Hillier Garden will be located inside the Great Pavilion.

CHALLENGING BUILDS Pro Landscaper asked a range of contractors what they expect the biggest challenge of the build to be. Here’s what they had to say...

MARK FANE CROCUS The Resilience Garden Building a garden for Chelsea is never easy. This is Crocus’s 29th garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and this year is no different in terms of complexity and the attention to detail. For the Resilience Garden, we’re bringing a huge range of plant and tree species together. This includes large mature trees, such as monkey puzzle and ginkgo, and it’s quite a task putting them in place. The centrepiece is a 7m tall grain silo, which doubles up as the designer’s office. Needless to say, there’s a lot of work involved moving that around!

Family Monsters Garden Without quoting the typical Chelsea challenge of space and access – the hardest part of our show will be the no excavations policy in the Artisan area. We’re using some big tree – the consequence of which is the garden will already be 400mm higher before we start, thereby creating a false experience. We’ve had to modify the build and levels so as members of the public can experience it as close to how they would if everything was consistent with the show ground level.

DAVID NEALE The Silent Pool Gin Gardens That would definitely be the central structure which we will be building from scratch. This will involve eight flitch beams spanning 7m across, four steel pillars, three tonnes of materials and a waterproof membrane, allowing us to be able to install 50–75mm of water and planting on top. Not forgetting the 3m wide attached perspex etched water wall! All of this is to be built around a 7-8m tall Betula nigra (River Birch) that needs to be placed in the ground first of all.

16

ALISTAIR BAYFORD

The Savills and David Harber Garden I think this year it will be logistics and making sure everything gets there on time. With the current uncertainty surrounding imports, all materials are sourced locally, except for the stone, which could be a bit of a headache. Other obstacles to overcome are transport restrictions on the approach road, restrictions on plant imports and, finally, the new low emission zone came into force on 8 April. The showground is out of this zone, but it will affect deliveries coming in from the north.

DESIGNER: THOMAS HOBLYN CONTRACTOR: LANDFORM CONSULTANTS LTD SPONSOR: DUBAI

The Dubai Majlis Garden takes inspiration from The Majlis concept cherished in the Middle East. With no proper seating or fixed routes round the garden, visitors are encouraged to use the space however they desire, encouraging visitors of all ages, cultures, and social backgrounds to meet with open minds. It is designed to reflect the sculptural beauty in arid landscapes, with white limestone and contrasting burnt sienna gravel. The space incorporates fluvially eroded rock wind-blown sand dunes and topiary-esque plants whilst a water source seemingly connects an oasis style pool, providing a calm, meditative atmosphere. The colour scheme will mimic arid habitats with yellowy greens from Santolina pinnata subsp. neapolitana ‘Sulphurea’ through to burnt oranges from Artemisia arborescens, contrasting with blues from Sarcopoterium spinosum and Bulbine frutescens.

Bringing together a harmonious blend of classic and modern elements, Jo Thompson’s design references Wedgwood’s eighteenth-century factory and village, Etruria. Etruria was built for its workers, as well as the entrepreneurial spirit of the Wedgwood founder. Framed views offer visitors different perspectives on the space, with water running through the garden, mimicking the watercourses and canals which were crucial to the functionality of Wedgewood’s production industry. Giving Girls in Africa a Space to Grow ©Jilayne Rickards Date : 04 November 2018 Category : Space to Grow 12m x 6m Drawing : Right Hand Side Corner Perspective Scale : N/A

DESIGNER: JILAYNE RICKARDS CONTRACTOR: CONWAY LANDSCAPES SPONSOR: CAMFED Sponsored by the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) at her debut Chelsea garden, Jilayne Rickards has a strong message to convey: the importance of horticultural education in African countries, particularly in the face of climate change and poverty. Focusing on Zimbabwe in particular, it aims to convey the country’s vibrant landscape through a bold planting scheme and the inclusion of red soil and banana and papaya trees. Plants have been sourced from warmer areas of Europe, whilst others have been grown at the Eden Project in Cornwall. This will be Conway Landscapes’ 20th show garden. The Hertfordshire based contractor has been building gardens at Chelsea, as well as the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, since 2002.

Did you know? For 25 years, CAMFED has united communities in sub-Saharan Africa in a collective effort to secure the right to education for the most excluded girls, resulting in more than 2.6 million children receiving support to go to school

The Roots in Finland Kyrö Garden Finnish designer Taina Suonio’s debut Chelsea garden is inspired by the countryside of her homeland with its biodiverse meadows and woodland spaces reflected in the design. Native plants such as Rosa pimpinellifolia will appear, and the Finnish national flower Convallaria majalis. Juniperus communis is a nod to the sponsor as its berries are used to flavour gin. With Finland boasting more than 188,000 lakes, a cascading water feature will be included. Handmade silver insects will feature as well as Finnish granite for the paving, benches and the slabs in the sunken garden.
