elcome to Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT Awards supplement. These awards, developed to celebrate small projects which form a large part of the landscape sector, are now in their third year. They are unique, focusing entirely on promoting and recognising gardens that are designed and built for under £25k. As the industry gives recognition to those spaces that make up the majority of peoples’ private domains, Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT Awards (spBI) are growing in importance. These awards appreciate the complexities of designing and building a small space, and on a relatively small budget. In fact, it’s often harder to get the ‘wow factor’ within these restrictions. Despite this, we’re proud to say that, for the second year running, we had an excellent response to the awards, with a good number of entries in all categories. Without the dedication of the judging panel, spBI would not have the kudos it has gained, so we thank each of them for taking the time to scrutinise and comment on the 2020 entries. We would also like to extend our congratulations to all the shortlisted entries – these schemes are outstanding. And very many congratulations to the winners and to our 2020 Supreme Winner, Landtech Landscape for its Italian Sanctuary project in the Design & Build Under £25k category.

young couple wanted a contemporary look for their small, north-facing garden at their first house – a former corner shop in Cheshire. Barnes Walker was asked to convert the store’s storage yard into an oasis of calm inspired by its clients’ travels. The garden needed to include a place to relax and entertain friends, and act as an extended room to enjoy throughout the year. Privacy was key as the site was overlooked by neighbouring windows, so Barnes Walker used a sail canopy, replicating the white parasols of the French Riviera. Another touch was ‘fractured’, black granite paving, inspired by holidays in Mykonos, and a planting palette chosen to reflect the couple’s travels in warmer climates, though they also required it to be relatively low maintenance due to their work. Judges said it was a “brilliant outcome and very creative use of the space”.

achel Bailey Garden Design overcame numerous issues with the soil – from the lack of it to different pH values – to create an informal garden that was fairly low maintenance, with a soft, pastel colour palette. This coastal garden, which started as a somewhat blank canvas, needed plants that would thrive in an exposed location subjected to high rainfall. Rachel Bailey Garden Design also selected plants for the different soil types and those which are reminiscent of the coastal hills of the West of Scotland. Most plants were purchased from local nurseries which the company works with on a regular basis. The careful planting selection sat well with the judges, who said it was “a successful and attractive solution that responded well to the site and helped to link the building with the surrounding landscape. An appropriate choice of species well placed to give a sense of flow without overcrowding the space.”

cre Landscapes completed this temporary project for main contractor PJ Careys, on behalf of its client Lendlease, throughout lockdown this summer. The project, which forms part of the £2.3bn regeneration of Elephant & Castle, will be dismantled in 2022 once these regeneration works are complete. An exotic and tropical planting scheme has been used to celebrate the rich and vibrant culture of the area, which meant extra care needed to be taken to ensure it would establish, and multi-coloured planters bring a contemporary feel to the space. More than 850 trees and shrubs fill these planters, providing those walking through the scheme with the sense of being in a jungle, and colourful uplighting transforms the scheme at night. It’s a much-needed addition to the area throughout the pandemic and beyond.

n unusable and inaccessible area of the client’s garden needed to be transformed on a very limited budget. Anderson Landscaping took on the challenge, working with the client throughout to keep costs low to convert this small area of sloping soil and rocks into a functional part of the garden. A patio was created, with a path to access it from another area of the garden featuring timber decking and a lawn; this also needed refurbishing with new artificial grass, sandstone steps and fencing. The special feature of the project was a Millboard cube, which gave the space a modern look in an informal setting and provided an enclosed and relaxing seating area. Judges called it an “innovative solution to a difficult site and a technical challenge overcome with imagination and commitment to quality. [A] very good example of what can be achieved in a small and awkward site.”

he owners of a new build town house in Lilliput, Poole, wanted their small and uninspiring garden to be made level, with improved access into the garden, a secluded seating area and a separate dining space. Wycliffe Landscapes created these distinct areas at each end of the garden, with materials chosen for a subtle, neutral colour palette. Improving the garden’s biodiversity was also on the clients’ wish list. For the soft landscaping, locally produced and peat-free materials were used as much as possible, from the topsoil to the turf. The central bed was bordered with Buxus sempevirens

and filled with shrubs and herbaceous perennials for colour texture, as well as to attract insects. A water feature was included amongst the planting and an armillary sphere provided by the client. This small town garden received high praise from the judges, with one commenting that it was “by far the most cost-effective scheme in the category and achieved a great deal within the budget”.

or a small, awkwardly-shaped suburban garden overlooked by surrounding houses, the client sought an ever-changing view with a large pond and for the garden to attract wildlife. There needed to be seating areas with enough room for a large table and chairs. The client loved a more traditional look but also wanted the garden to be a statement, with the fences detracting attention away from the awkward shape of the space. To do this, Tracy Foster Garden Design used generous planting in front of new, dark fencing. A large pond was installed with stepping stones to allow access around the house, and planting shelves and ‘wildlife’ steps were added. Grasses with colourful perennials provide a meadow feel and the pond is viewed through a veil of grass. Judges commented that it was a “good use of space and clear to see that wildlife was at the heart of the design… A very accomplished scheme – good attention to detail and great atmosphere.”

andtech was given free reign by the client to create something special and unique for his wife, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer; the garden was to be built for her, and Landtech says it was one of the most rewarding projects it has ever worked on. A three-level water feature formed the focal point of the garden, as well as a large arched walkway. Lighting was used to enhance structures and lift the mood of the garden in the evenings. Two olive trees either side of the large benches were surrounded by lavender for long-lasting flowers and scent. There were challenges in obtaining materials due to COVID-19, and difficulties in using 6mm porcelain cladding and creating a balanced flow from each of the three waterfalls, but Landtech overcame all of these to create a project which the judges called “an impressive garden…with many features and innovative used of materials, especially Perspex for the viewing wall to pool”.

LANDTECH LANDSCAPE | ITALIAN SANCTUARY
This project received the highest total score from the judges across all seven categories. “Many congratulations to Supreme Winner Landtech Landscape for its impressive creation of a tranquil space within part of a larger garden. The many features and innovative use of materials blend together perfectly. The team had a lovely connection with the family with an emotional back story, and COVID-19 restrictions threw up some supply challenges which makes the result even more remarkable. Well done team Landtech!” Jim & Lisa Wilkinson “£24.6k impressive garden (almost a show garden) with many features and innovative use of materials, especially Perspex or the viewing to pool. Water, waterfalls, green walls, paving and cobbles, firepit, lighting, and a good quality finish, too. Open customer brief achieved customer delight.” Nick Coslett
