s the industry gives recognition to those spaces that make up the majority of peoples’ private domains, Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT (spBI) Awards is growing in importance. These smaller spaces are no longer seen as just a backyard for storage – the trend is to create a useable extension of the home. More people than ever are recognising the value of having a pleasing space to relax and socialise privately. These awards appreciate the complexities of designing and building a small space, and on a relatively small budget. In fact, it’s often harder to get the ‘wow factor’ within these restrictions. Despite this, we’re proud to say that, for the second year running, we had an excellent response to the awards, with a good number of entries in all categories. Without the dedication of the judging panel, spBI would not have the kudos it has gained, so we thank each of them for taking the time to scrutinise and comment on the 2019 entries. We would also like to extend a big well done to all the shortlisted entries – these schemes are outstanding. And very many congratulations to the winners and to our 2019 Supreme Winner, Slate Grey Garden Design, for Beechmont Hall, Lower Terrace. The project also successfully scooped the top award in the Special Feature Under £20k category.

ooking for a contemporary and low maintenance space, the clients at Duxford also wanted their northfacing garden to seem lighter and larger. So, HortiServices widened the lower terrace, with a set of curved stairs leading to the lawn, and chose light colour blends for the paving. The addition of larch cladding and living walls helps to soften dark brown garage walls. There are spaces for both the clients and their children, such as a hexagonal greenhouse and a sunken trampoline. Wildlife also benefits from the garden, with a green roof, living wall and raised pond, improving biodiversity. Despite the team facing a number of challenges (including honey fungus, which is deadly to garden trees and shrubs), the finished project was a huge success. The clients were invited to open their garden to the public through the National Garden Scheme – judges declared it a “fantastic transformation”.

usiness improvement district Euston Town was keen to create a Euston Green Link which would allow pedestrians to avoid the heavily polluted Euston Road. It wanted a flagship pocket park along the route at Westminster Kingsway College for the local community to enjoy, providing funding for the project along with an injection from the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund. Taking on the challenge, Cityscapes designed a low maintenance, high impact planting scheme in ecological layers. A combination of familiar and unusual plants was chosen, which judges praised for being “different from the usual palette” and an “inspired plant choice”. Plants were sourced from smaller, peat-free nurseries. Shade tolerant species were selected for beneath the trees on the west side of the space, whilst sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants were used on the exposed east side. The client said they “are delighted Euston now has this slice of nature”, calling the pocket park “a space of natural beauty that is a true community asset”.

o showcase its vast range of products, from hard landscaping materials to shrubs, a local landscape supplier wanted a show garden on its site. The challenge was squeezing this into a 4 x 4m space, but Landtech managed to do exactly that. It created a contemporary space, with light grey porcelain alongside cream porcelain edging and copings around the pool. A cobble firepit was installed to complement the cobble feature wall, as well as sleeper floating benches reached via floating stepping stones. Plants were chosen to create height and colour, but also to encourage bees and butterflies. The client was thrilled with the result, saying it “goes to show you don’t need a big garden to achieve something really special”, and the judges appear to agree. They noted that the garden “highlights the materials of the landscape depot as well as the design, craftmanship and build skills of Landtech – excellent work.”

espite astounding views overlooking the Weald in Sussex, this lower sunken terrace was underused. The clients felt it did not provide a welcoming space and did not link up the new moon gate terrace above, a challenge Slate Grey Design faced by moving the entrance to the other side. A contemporary space was created, with the hot tub being a welcome addition, ensuring this area of the garden would be frequently visited. Existing walls were faced with gabion cages filled with locally sourced Kentish ragstone, the use of which complemented the Mediterranean planting palette. Thanks to the company’s “care, consideration, expertise, professionalism, and just sheer joy” in what it does, the client said it would recommend Slate Grey Design “without hesitation”. Judges said the terrace was an “amazing transformation”, providing a “fabulous relationship” to its setting.

he clients had faith in Kirman Design from the start, stating that the team “understood early on in this process the type of garden we were hoping to achieve, which gave us the confidence to know we had chosen wisely”. They wanted a contemporary space which flowed seamlessly from their new garden room, so the porcelain paving and decorative gravel featured colour elements to match those used inside the porch. The garden was also overlooked from the road and other houses, so Kirman Design installed high slatted screen perimeter fencing in line with feature burnt timber screens. A limited planting palette of greens, whites and silvers was used, with the exception of an Acer palmatum ‘Eddisbury’ against the Shou-Sugi-Ban screens, creating a focal point from the garden room. Judges were impressed, stating that the hard landscaping is “excellent”, and Kirman Design had expressed some “interesting ideas here with good lighting”, creating ambience at any hour of the day.

his South London garden was designed as a contemporary space for a couple who wanted to relax and entertain outdoors. The clients also wanted an area for growing vegetables and herbs which was somewhat hidden, as well as a bold planting scheme to complement the interior. Despite a challenging budget, the couple said the garden “exceeded all our expectations”, with modern paving, planting with yearround interest, and a timber pergola. Judges commented the project had “a good design, good planting and a good finish”, with a “clever use of lateral lines to lead the eye around the garden.”

lean architectural lines” and a “seamless transition from inside to outside” impressed the judges, and are exactly what the client had requested. They wanted the garden to connect to their recently renovated kitchen, with a Kyoto inspired feel and a calming planting palette of deep greens. So, GRDN used Chevron patterned hardwood decking to match the internal kitchen flooring, with each piece of timber being cut individually. The client says they can “hardly tell the difference between indoor and outdoor. GRDN did a great job to continue the chevron.” The team visited a nursery with the client to tag trees and larger shrubs, ensuring a collaborative process. Since completion, the project has been shortlisted for a new London Architecture’s Don’t Move, Improve! 2019 awards, alongside SAM Architects and Lunar Architects.
