WINTER SKINCARE
by Martha Escobar, ELLA Beauty Editor
Each changing season has its charm, and we embrace the change. During the colder months, there is a sense of stillness and calmness. We can enjoy staying warm and cozy during the long and cold nights. However, low humidity levels, frigid wind, and indoor heaters can negatively affect the health and appearance of the skin. These conditions cause the skin to lose moisture, cause flaky and chapped patches and have an overall dull appearance. In addition, it can worsen skin conditions such as eczema. Therefore, during fall and winter months, give your skin gentle and nourishing care for a beautiful all year-round glow. Your skincare products should be richer, gentler, and sumptuous. Here are some suggestions to adjust your skincare regimen and product changes during the colder months..
REPLENISH AND SEAL MOISTURE
Apply skincare products that are naturally nutrient-dense and highly moisturizing. Choose protective day and reparative night moisturizers. Look for moisturizers that contain many antioxidants such as vitamin C and E . Find heavier base moisturizers that do not have water. Why? Combined oil and water formulas are lotions and lightweight creams; these are great during the spring and summer months. However, rich creams are emollients that do not contain water; they help the protective barrier of the skin to retain hydration, replenish nutrients and keeps skin moisturized. Look for moisturizers rich in plant butters for complete skin nutrition, such as cacao, shea, and avocado. Find hydrating serums that target dryness that works in alliance with your day and night moisturizer.
• To keep skin supple, seal in hydration by applying serum, face oil, and moisturizer on damp skin. Boost skin’s suppleness and glow by applying moisturizing masks once a week or twice if you have dry skin.
GENTLE CLEANSING
Exfoliating helps maintain the skin glowing by removing dead skin cells and helps the skin absorb moisture but avoid over-exfoliating your skin. It is best to limit to once or twice a week. Opt for ground oats or ground almonds; they offer a luxuriant exfoliating treatment that is gentle and soothing on the skin while replenishing moisture.
• Also, avoid skincare products that contain alcohol and harsh synthetic ingredients; these can dehydrate the skin, worsening the skin’s health and appearance. Instead, remove makeup with plant-based cleansing oils or balms they dissolve makeup and impurities for thorough cleansing without damaging the epidermis protective barrier.
WARM SHOWERS & BATHS
It may sound logical to take hot baths and showers during the cold month, but the hot water can remove the skin’s natural oils that protect and moisturize the skin. So instead, take shorter warm baths and showers.
• To keep your skin sublimely soft and supple, apply a rich and nutrient-dense body moisturizer while your skin is still damp to seal in moisture and deep nutrient delivery.
WHOLESOME NOURISHMENT
Changing your skincare routine and what we feed the body according to the rhythm of the seasons is evenly essential. Stay hydrated, eat what is in season, add more whole grains, warming spices, herbal teas, legumes, and stews to keep your health and beauty balanced during colder months.
