ASSISTED LIVING FOR VETERANS The following project was created with Lizard Rock Designs. It is an expansion of Estes Garden, an existing assisted living facility for low income adults, in Tucson Arizona. The vacant lot adjacent to the current building would be used as the site for a new facility for the Marshall Home for men, which provides assisted living for veterans. Units will be finished with high efficiency bathroom fixtures, and tile made from recycled content. Highly efficient ductless mechanical units for heating/ cooling will be utilized. Paint, grout, mortar, and construction adhesives used throughout the building will be zero or minimal VOC products. Drought resistant trees and plantings will be used extensively through out community gardens.

MEN & WOMEN While the Marshall Home for Men caters specifically to male veterans in need of housing, the main building has the potential to house both men and women. The East wing can serve male clientele, while the West wing can be converted into a separate housing area for women. The two different wings will both have equal access to the central and shared amenities like the dining and living room, but with separate circulation and bathing facilities. This would allow the project to expand to different user groups.

The project stretches from east to west allowing for maximum natural light exposure through out the project and individual units. As seen in the site diagram the main building and casitas frame a central courtyard for users to enjoy. This courtyard expands across to the existing building, connecting new and existing. The site allows for the possibility of up to 10 onebedroom casitas, and 60 studio units in the main building.

BRIDGE HOUSE

STRE E T CULTURE HOUSE This project is located in Freden’s Park in Copenhagen Denmark. Freden’s park is a long narrow park between the neighborhoods Nørrebro and Østerbro. The park sits mostly vacant, with the exception of a small playground and people passing through on their way to somewhere else. The premise was to create an innovative, active, and fun architectural project that would serve as a youth culture house. Programmatically the project had to accommodate both standard sports and activities like basketball and art as well as street sports, such as skateboarding and parkour. With an integrated mix of activities, the project aims attract many different types of kids to come play and interact with the project and each other.

BRIDGE HOUSE INFORMATION

Rhino Render & Illustrator post processing

PROJEC T USE RS The user group is Copenhagen youth ages six to eighteen. The project aims to invite kids with a variety of interests and backgrounds into the space. Through interviewing sixth graders, Romeo and Philip, a better understanding of user wants and needs was achieved. Their daily habits, interests, favorite existing spaces, all inspired and influenced the project. Spaces for kids interested in street sports like parkour, art space for different crafts, hangout space for kids to relax with one another, music rooms for those interested in music, court space for sports and dance, and outdoor field space to play tag, soccer, or just run around outside. The hope is that this Culture House can provide equal and open access to all types of activities, for all types of kids.

SITE The site of the culture house is located at Freden’s park, a narrow park in Norrebro just north of Copenhagen’s lake (a popular pedestrian destination), between Osterbro and Vesterbro. The park is surrounded by residential buildings, and two large buildings: Rigshospitalet (the main hospital of Copenhagen) and Panum, which is part of the KU (Copenhagen University)to them.

Rhino & Illustrator diagram

BRIDGE HOUSE

VEHICLE TRAFFIC Freden’s Park lies at the cross section of two heavily trafficked streets, Blegdamsvej which runs East and West, and Fredensgade/Tagensvej which runs North and South. Both streets are consistently used by individual cars as well as public transit buses. This heavy traffic leads to some noise pollution from the street onto the site. The barrier of trees around the park help some, but do not eliminate it.

Rhino & Illustrator diagram

S I T E A N A LY S I S

BIKE TRAFFIC Bike infrastructure is a large component of travel through Copenhagen. For the most part, bike traffic is consistent with vehicle traffic, and is heaviest along Blegdamsvej and Fredensgade/ Tagensvej. There is some bike traffic through the park, mostly along the diagonal path, but it is sporadic.

PEOPLE Currently, Freden’s park is a primarily used as a thoroughfare for people, whether they are walking their dogs or just crossing from point A to B. Very few people stop to stay or gather in the park. Pedestrians use the diagonal path the most, cutting through from one end to the next. Sometimes during the day parents and young children will gather and play around the existing playground. While others gather for a bit by intersections corners, while they wait to cross the street. The park has a few access points, with the main point at the corner of Blegdamsvej and Fredensgade.

SUMMER During the summer time Freden’s park receives full and ample sun between 9 am and 3 pm, without shadows cast from the surrounding buildings.

Rhino & Illustrator diagram

BRIDGE HOUSE

WINTER During the winter, the sun is lower in the sky and the site only receives continuous coverage on the west portion of the park. Early in the day, at 9 am, the Freden’s park is free of shadow, but by 12 pm half is under shade, and by 3 pm it is covered completely by shadows from other buildings. During the winter, the best area to capture sun would be the west portion (represented in the diagram).

EXISTING CONDITIONS The exisiting site, Freden’s Park is an underutilized space. For the most part it remains empty, with little activity except for those passing through. Those who do occupy the space use the park as a means of getting from point A to B. This foot traffic, and sometimes bike, primarily takes place along the diagonal path that crosses the park.

CREATE BRIDGE Lift the ground and create bridges that cross the park, so as to not disrupt existing travel patterns on the site. Insert indoor program beneath the bridge.

PROGRAM The program of this project represents a diverse mix of sports and creative activities, as well space for relaxation and down time. The program also reaches beyond the boundaries of the building into the surrounding park, incorporating court space which can also function as a performance space, skateboarding, a parkour play ground, and open field space. Many of these outdoor activities can also move indoors into the multi-purpose room, if bad weather necessitates it. Indoor activities include spaces for dance, sport, music, art, lounge space, and a changing room. All of which are supported by staff space and back of house programs like toilets and storage.

SITE PLAN The project is composed of a bridge that grows from the ground, moving diagonally across the site, along the main route of site circulation. Project programming sits underneath the bridge, and in three fingers that grow off the main leg. The bridges allow for people to continue to easily cross the park, while also offering an elevated perspective of the activities taking place around them, and allowing them to occupy the roof. Also on the site is open field space for leisure or football, a parkour playground, skate park, court space, jungle gym, as well as seating and sun bathing space.

YO U T H H O M E LE S S S H E LT E R Located in central Copenhagen, the goal of this infill project is to provide shelter and vital resources to a marginalized community; homeless Danish youth. It will provide necessary resources, like food, a place to sleep, bathe, or store belongings, as well as educational resources. The building facade takes height cues from surrounding buildings, while pushing back from the street front to invite users inside. The line between the street and the building is blurred through large pivoting windows, and multiple terraces in order to connect the program to its surroundings. Overall the hope is that the project will act as an inviting home for those in need.

This piece was built as a part of a furniture design studio at DIS Copenhagen. The premise of the project was to create a flat pack design made from bamboo plywood. The goal of this chair is to achieve the same comfort and effect of a curved seat and back, while also adding visual interest, by segmenting the pieces. Three individual parts are held together by bracing which connects the two side frames and gives the appearance that the seat and back are floating above the frame. The pieces fit within a 75 x 100 x 20 cm box, for easy packing and shipping. The chair comes together by attaching the seat and back to the legs with a total of six screws and two dowels.
