HEALTH & INNOVATION paradise, ca Cal Poly, SLO Studio Stacey White Arch 352 & 353 Winter - Spring 2019 Project Partner Amanda Radner Programs Revit, Enscape, and Illustrator
PROJECT BRIEF This project will serve as a biomedical research facility that also includes opportunities for higher education within the field. The hope is that this project will provide a space for innovation in the health industry and educational outreach programs. The laboratory portion of the project will be dedicated to understanding the health effects of fire. The building will attract younger generations while also giving opportunities for residents to participate and learn about smaller-scale biomedical research. Because of the health and education combination, it will bring in more health professionals which may also spur economic growth within the medical community in Paradise.

The project is sited within the scope of a larger medical campus, that could be built in phases as Paradise begins to recover. The medical campus will also spur economic growth and resiliency within the town, as medical professionals move to Paradise. It will serve current Paradise residents, who on average are older and need easy access to health care.

The most public spaces are located on the ground floor for convenience, and to create a welcoming and open first floor to encourage curious users to explore the space. Circulation moves around and across the courtyard connecting the two bars of programs, laboratories and education spaces. Project form, orientation, materials, and structure are all chosen to be both environmentally sustainable and fire resistant. The whole space works cohesively as a high performing building.

This project was part of a collaborative studio project to re-imagine the town of Paradise after the town was destroyed in a forest fire in November of 2018. A total of nine building projects, re-zoning, and planning for a more urban center, were all part of the final proposal presented to Paradise community members. PROJECT BRIEF The following project was created with Lizard Rock Designs. It is an expansion of Estes Garden, an existing assisted living facility for low income adults, in Tucson Arizona. The vacant lot adjacent to the current building would be used as the site for a new facility for the Marshall Home for men, which provides assisted living for veterans. The project includes plans for parking expansion, the new apartment building, a series of stand alone casitas, flexible floor plan to accomodte both men and women, and a promenade courtyard garden to connect new with existing. Schematic work was done in collaboration with firm architects to create materials for Estes to start applying for funding. The ground floor houses 28 studio units as well as common spaces which include; living and dining rooms, conference room, gym, reception, staff space, and a kitchen. These amenities are placed centrally for easy access for all residents. Other facilities like the spa and laundry are placed at each wing of the building, closer to resident rooms. Smaller lounges are dispersed throughout the circulation to allow more opportunity for residents to gather. https://issuu.com/ellamcquillen-portfolios/docs/copenhagen_portfolio_new Aerial View

BRIDGE HOUSE copenhagen, dk DIS Copenhagen Studio Marie Louise Holt Architectural Studio Spring 2020 Programs Rhino and Illustrator
PROJECT BRIEF This project is located in Freden’s Park in Copenhagen Denmark, which sits mostly vacant. The premise was to create an innovative, active, and fun architectural project that would serve as a youth culture house. Programmatically the project had to accommodate both standard sports and activities like basketball and art as well as street sports, such as skateboarding and parkour. With an integrated mix of activities, the project aims attract many different types of kids to come play and interact with the project and each other. The design acts as a bridge, so as to not disrupt existing movement through the park on the roof, while inserting programmatic space underneath. Additional fingers of program branch from the main bridge, while exterior pockets of space are filled with outdoor activity.

SANDBOX
san francisco, ca Cal Poly, SLO Studio Jeff Ponitz Arch 351 Fall 2019 Programs Rhino and Illustrator
PROJECT BRIEF This project is located in San Francisco’s civic center plaza. The premise was to take what was previously the city’s underground storage unit (Brooke’s Hall) and re-purpose the underground space and create an occupiable roof, to work with a program that would re-invigorate the plaza. The new space will act as the middle ground for surrounding civic spaces. The project will operate both as a complement to other civic programs, and as a binding agent that holds and blends programs and people together. Through flexible space the project will help to serve the community’s recreation, health and cultural needs, both above and below. Requirements of the project included a public bathroom portion of the program that allowed free and accessible use to toilets, showers, and hygiene stations; and a 15’ height above ground max allowance.
