Thank You!

I

have always been impressed with the quality of the artwork displayed in the Ellarslie Open, the premier exhibition at our beloved museum. Each year, save 2020, artists have submitted a large number of objects to be reviewed and selected by a juror for this exhibition. This year was no exception, with 619 artworks submitted and 137 chosen.

I hope you enjoy viewing this show. There is much to see. It runs through October 3, giving you an opportunity to visit several times if you wish. Please take time to enjoy each piece.

Ellarslie Open 37/38 The Ellarslie Open Returns

T

he Ellarslie Open, our museum tradition - awaited by all, returns. While virtual became our new reality, we decided to bring the EO back, 37/38, new, fresh and in-person. It was brave on the part of the Trustees to trust and ultimately embrace our history. As we get ready for our signature event, I want to take a moment to thank all our trustees, donors, members and volunteers who supported us through a very dark year. In accordance with city and state guidelines we chose to keep our doors open. I know it was important and appreciated because our visitors told us so. In 2023, the Trenton Museum Society will be 50 years old, the Trenton City Museum will be 45 and the EO will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. In a post pandemic world, where 30% of American museums will never re-open, we are preparing for our future. The Ellarslie Open will be leading the way.

4

TCM’s reach continues and entries have come from beyond the tristate area. Thank you to all the artists who entered this juried exhibition.Your continued participation makes us strong. Special thanks goes to trustees, Joyce Inderbitzin, curator and Sarah Unger, marketing chairperson who acted as administrator for this event. They successfully guided us through many of the changes that were necessary for this year’s exhibition. Many thanks go to the many volunteers who are helping us to deliver the exhibition and who will be here through the duration of the exhibition. Where would we be without our donors and the trustees who reached out to them and procured the ads and prizes? Thank you. Thanks to Maggie Rose, our new staff member, who cut her teeth on this exhibition. To Carla Sakson and Eileen Baldwin you are invaluable. And to Jan Applebaum, our graphic designer - another splendid job!

The EO always surprises me and this year is no exception. The quality of the entries was very high. Jury day is fascinating - in strong competition in with receiving day. Dr.Valerio, this year’s juror, was amazing. He gave us the opportunity to see the exhibition through his eyes. It was completely generous and a wonderful learning experience. We strived to translate your voice into an exhibition that will have our visitors talking, learning, visually challenged and delighted. This year we will be celebrating both inside and outside. It’s a new approach, dictated by the change in EO dates. We believe it will be great fun and we hope you enjoy it - catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Look for the artists and introduce yourselves. The Ellarslie Open 37/38 will continue into the Fall. Visit again. Each visit will reveal something new.

www.ellarslie.org

The Trenton Museum Society hopes you enjoy the exhibition. Becoming a member, a donor, a sponsor or a volunteer helps support our mission and enables us to bring you exhibitions like this one and all of the other exhibits, both history and art, through out the year. Sincerely,

Joan Perkes

Ellarslie Open 37/38 Dr. William R. Valerio, Juror

T

he backbone of the arts in many cities and regions across the country comes from organizations like the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie that offer hands-on creative experiences and intimacy with works of art, right in our own backyards. As juror of this year’s Annual, I was deeply impressed by the range of work and diversity of artists who submitted for consideration. There was much excellence, and it was a challenge to narrow the field to a selection that could be accommodated in Ellarslie’s generous galleries. Awarding prizes was even harder! A friend of mine often says that art is a big house with many rooms, and the current show is a case in point. There are as many approaches to making art as there are unique forms of sophistication. It is my understanding that artists came from far and wide. One sculptor traveled by motorcycle from New York City with her delicate work packed carefully in a backpack. Another artist came to Ellarslie with a large, unstretched canvas and built his work on

6

site. Egg tempera is an ancient technique of painting, and you will see works made in that exquisite medium hanging alongside digital art made with computer programs and Epson printers. I would like to thank the artists: those whose work is included in the show and those whose work is not. I would also express my esteem for the staff and volunteers at Ellarslie who put in long hours and are fueled by dedication. As we all know, the times are challenging, and to have organized this complicated exhibition through the many months of the pandemic is a feat to be admired. It was my honor to be juror. I hope the exhibition sustains the confidence of those who make art and believe in its importance.

irector of Philadelphia’s Woodmere Art Museum since 2010, Dr. William R. Valerio has led the museum into its increasingly vital presence in the cultural life of the region. As the museum’s Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO, Dr. Valerio has overseen the organization of nearly one hundred exhibitions while expanding and digitizing its collection. Efforts to elevate the visibility of Philadelphia’s artists and the shared appreciation of the city’s unique art and history have led to the Woodmere’s dramatic growth of diversity in program and audience and its steady expansion of attendance, membership, and community involvement. Dr. Valerio graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College in 1985. He earned his MA in Art History at the University of Pennsylvania in 1987 and his PhD in Art History at Yale University www.ellarslie.org

in 1996. After working as Curator at the Queens Museum of Art in New York, he attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning his MBA in 2004 with a double major in Strategic Management and Marketing. Dr. Valerio has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Rome Prize of the American Academy in Rome. 7

Ellarslie Open 37/38 The History of the Ellarslie Open

E

llarslie, an Italianate villa, was built for Henry McCall Sr. of Philadelphia as a summer residence in 1848. The architect selected to design Ellarslie was John Notman, known for designing the first Italianate building in America in Burlington, NJ, and the first Renaissance Revival building, the Athenaeum in Philadelphia. Notman was locally recognized for also designing the 1845 expansion of the New Jersey State House and the design for the State Hospital, which was also begun in 1848. In February 1881, Henry McCall Jr. sold Ellarslie to George Farlee for $25,000. Seven years later, in September of 1888, the city of Trenton acquired the property from Farlee for $50,000, which also included the surrounding 80 acres, which would become the city’s first public park, Cadwalader Park, designed by the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. The City of Trenton opened the first museum here in 1889, closing several years later. Ellarslie has been a restaurant, ice cream parlor

8

and monkey house. The building itself has been home to several noted Trenton families over the years, and in 1971 Trenton City Council passed a resolution to create the Trenton City Museum. The Trenton City Museum opened in 1978 in Ellarslie Mansion with an exhibition from our permanent collection of Trenton cultural history. Ellarslie Mansion is included in the National Registry of Historic Places. In 1982, the Ellarslie Open was established to encourage local artists to submit their work for judging and display. Since then, the Trenton City Museum has displayed the work of more than eight hundred local and regional artists, many selected on the basis of work they submitted to the Ellarslie Open. Over the years, the Ellarslie Open became a significant exhibition in its own right, drawing on the work of professional artists from the tri-state region and beyond, while encouraging and recognizing emerging artists. Today, the Ellarslie Open serves as mid-Jersey’s premier annual juried exhibit.
