Thank You from the EO Team!
he members of the Ellarslie Open committee are proud to present Ellarslie Open 41, the annual juried show that highlights the incredible diversity and talent of artists from across the region and beyond. This year’s exhibition showcases a wide array of work within the genres of painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and works on paper that, together, offer a rich and uplifting visual experience.
The 110 works on display were selected with care and expertise by juror Kimberly Camp from 550 entered pieces, then were laid out and hung by our dedicated team of exhibition volunteers. Join us at Trenton City Museum to explore the compelling works that are a testament to the cultural vitality of our surrounding community. We invite you to dig into this exceptional display –and perhaps come back another time or two to catch EO41 and all that Trenton City Museum offers!

Here at Trenton City Museum there’s no excitement quite like the Ellarslie Open kind of excitement. Every committee participates, every trustee “comes to work”, everyone involved delivers.
Our premier annual event allows us to embrace the totality of who we are –our story, our trustees and volunteers, our donors and sponsors, our artists, and our community.
We give meticulous attention to the selection of our juror, which you see reflected in the number and range of entries and the quality of the exhibition. The Ellarslie Open committee members and volunteers consistently deliver a superior exhibition and opening weekend, and I can’t thank them enough.
Many of you know it has been a challenging year for the Museum, with building issues forcing us to close for a while and to demonstrate flexibility yet again – something we have become quite good at! We thank
A Message from Joan Perkes President, Trenton Museum Society
our members, volunteers, and friends for their patience and their continued good cheer.
We hope you will visit this show more than once and support the artists with a purchase. If you see me, stop and ask about our current and upcoming programming and our new series of cultural lectures. And remember: It is always a perfect time to become a member.
Finally, I love writing the President’s letter for the EO catalog. This year the exercise contained an element of the bittersweet, as it is my last year as President of TMS. I plan to continue working with the Museum and reaching out to the community as part of the Museum family.
Thank you for your support over the years. It has been an honor and a joy.
Best, Joan

Kimberly Camp, Juror
It is not hyperbole to say that the overall quality of the work submitted for this juried exhibition is truly exceptional – praise I do not often offer. Were it not for the physical constraints of the space, there would be more art for us all to enjoy. That being said, congratulations to all of you whose works are displayed here at Trenton City Museum’s Ellarslie Open 41. Its significance demonstrates the critical need for us to communicate our ideas – our very humanity in creative ways, especially now when sometimes the words are difficult to say and hear. Art speaks in a voice that touches our psyche.
I chose work that reflects different aesthetic traditions, unique insights in commonplace things, intimate personal reflections, joy and profound beauty. These paintings drawings and sculpture call our attention to the ways in which successful art compels us to look closely, examining the parts of each work and how they create the

whole of a moment in time and place. There is a lot to be said for knowing how to look at art that seems so simple, but that depends on the connections between its formal elements and what we see.
Dr. Albert Barnes believed that artists perceived at a higher level than other people, and that if you could teach people to see the way that an artist sees, it would enhance their ability to perceive, that process would build critical problem-solving skills, and you could therefore build a better democracy. So, through contrasting and comparing the formal elements of art, students through discourse would find Meaning. When challenged with the crazed pace dictated by technology and social media, what we tend to forget is discourse.
I challenge the viewers to talk to each other about what you see in these works of art. Share openly what captures your attention. Stories and interpretations may

come later, but first look at light, line, color and space. Examine how the creators have combined those elements to say something about the world in which we live. Use that examination as a pathway to understanding the unspoken words that are intertwined in brush strokes, pencils, pens and chisels. In this visually rich environment, we can all be compelled to understand that every one is capable of making great beauty. It’s the common thread that unites us all.

annual juried show that highlights the incredible diversity and talent of artists from across the region and beyond.
We’re building a coworking space for independent professionals like you. In fact, we intend to build a coworking community of independent professionals like you.
• You like working around others.
• You welcome the opportunities, relationships and collaborations that happen when people come together.
• You want a flexible schedule because not every day is an office day, or because it’s hard to know what tomorrow may bring.
• Desks/WiFi/Coffee/Conference Room/Printer/Lounge.
• Full-time & part-time rates, with as little as a one month commitment.
With thanks,
• In Trenton’s Mill Hill District, a downtown location just a short walk from the Trenton Train Station, restaurants and cultural institutions.
