From the Director Firstly, I want to thank the many members and friends of Ella Sharp Museum – you keep the organization m o v i n g f o r w a r d through your gifts of time, talent and treasure. Volunteers gave 7,700 hours of time to the museum projects during the past year – that’s the equivalent of 4 full-time employees! We could not be where we are without those precious hours of time. The museum operates on the income generated by memberships, sponsorships and donations – over half our yearly budget comes from these sources! We thank you most gratefully for this income and support and hope we can count on you all in the future.

additions to the original plan that unfolded as the actual construction took place. We are thankful for the thoughtful guidance of Dennis Ray of Tri-State Paving and his crew for their professional job and helpful suggestions along the way. Perhaps the most exciting news everyone has been waiting for is the announcement that we have signed a new operator lease for The Granary Restaurant. Emmeline Leutz of Jackson will be our new owner/operator and we anticipate her opening to be in early August. We are excited for this opportunity and welcome Emmeline and her family to our family. Hours and details will be promoted as we move close to opening day – watch our website and the weekly e-blast of news for updates.
Our future is bright!
This issue highlights the dedicated members of our community Board of Trustees. Preparations are also underway for American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony which will be open in the Hurst and Emmett Galleries October 26, 2013-January 11, 2014. We are looking forward to this exciting exhibition! Our Patio Parties on Thursday nights continue to be an opportunity for great music and good times – we are averaging over 70 people each week! We hope to see everyone soon! I am delighted to be Ella’s new executive director. Our future is bright. I would welcome the chance to get to know all of you, so please stop by anytime!
Welcome to Our Newly Designed Newsletter! In order to more efficiently report to you our news and exhibits, we have decided to publish quarterly instead of bi-monthly. We will still have the latest and greatest class listings, gallery and exhibit schedules as well as the upcoming events you will not want to miss. As a member of the Ella, you receive many benefits, including this newsletter, admission to the galleries on any day we are open, invitations to our openings and events and discounts on class fees among them. We thank you very much for being a part of our family. If you have ideas for events, classes or exhibits, we invite you to share them with us at any time.

Farm Lane Restoration Project This summer, the Ella Sharp Museum began work on the Farm Lane Restoration Project. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the project will be complete. This $72,000 project will replace the asphalt paving on the 600-foot portion of the historic Farm Lane that passes through the complex of historic Museum buildings. Farm Lane will be rebuilt with a narrower width, more in keeping with its
original appearance. The new Farm Lane will be handicap accessible and connect with existing concrete walks and entrances into buildings on the Museum grounds. The east end of Farm Lane will be realigned to reconnect to the remaining portion of the original Farm Lane east of Oakridge Drive. The work will involve removal of various modern concrete pads, curbs, aprons, and walkways, and the replacement of deteriorated concrete at the Dibble School House. Also included is the installation of a new concrete base for Ella Sharp’s Victorian garden gazebo, which has been placed in a new location north of the wood shop.
Looking east along the farm lane about 1900. Ella Sharp is sitting on the steps off the dining room. In the distance on the left is the Tower Barn, and on the right beyond the trees is the Granary.
In addition to paving, the Farm Lane Restoration Project also involves developing eight new interpretive signs and a sign on Fourth Street to identify the Museum to passing motorists. Interpretive signs will be placed along the lane to identify each of the historic buildings on the museum site and describe its function and history. The new signs will be fabricated by a sign company and installed by Museum volunteers. This work is funded primarily through the generosity of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Jackson’s Weatherwax Foundation and Hurst Foundation, and other donors. The sign on Fourth Street will be the first to identify the Ella Sharp House to passing motorists. Museum staff reports that many people contact the Museum asking if the old house is for sale, not realizing that the historic house was donated to the City of Jackson more than 100 years ago.
Same view in the summer of 2012. The large walnut trees are gone along this length of Farm Lane, but they remain in the far distance along the portion of the Farm Lane east of Oakwood Road. The tower barn is on the left and the Granary is behind the trees on the right.
